WHY I DON'T CONTROL, WALK OR TRAIN DOGS WITH COLLARS OF ANY KIND AROUND THEIR NECKS AND HEADS You don't need to agree or disagree with this post, and neither do you need to defend your use of these tools. What happens to our dogs when we use collars, slip leads, chock collars, prong collars, half chokes, halti or martingale collars on our dogs during a walk when they pull and lunge...? Impacts: Lymph ducts and nodes damage Muscle strain, pain and injuries Arteries and veins impacts Higher blood pressure Spinal cord damage Nerve damage Disk damage Thyroid damage Larynx damage Oesophagus damage Collapsed trachea Increased reactivity due to negative associations Pessimistic dogs Pain Increased adrenalin and cortisol levels Break down in the trust relationship with your dog Try and use a harness - a y-front harness if possible. Stay away from puppy and dog training schools that ask you to bring your dog with any neck device or collar for training. They either don't have the skill and knowledge to train your dog or they are looking for quick fixes 😉 If your dog is lunging and pulling on a walk, please contact a qualified FF pet professional, on www.coape.org or www.capbt.org, who will assess the reasons for your dog's behaviour and work with you to improve this by using a harness. Sometimes your dog's reactivity has nothing to do with a harness or a tool but as a result of an emotional response to a stimulus or it is just a lack of skilled training to walk loose lead. If your dog is an expert at loose lead walking while on a collar, or can walk without a lead and never be triggered but remains calm and neutral in the face of any stimulus, then this post does not apply to you. This post is about using neck devices to control, discipline, 'tame', train or "dominate' reactive dogs and those that lunge or pull during a walk. Final note - don't be a YANKER. Use a harness 😉 #forcefreetraining #harnessesnotcollars #harnessesfordogs #stophurtinganimals #stopchokingyourdog #collarrisksfordogs EDIT: Re head harnesses and gentle leaders - I do not think that they are FORCE-FREE as it hurts and causes discomfort to the sensitive nose and throat of the dog: https://www.instagram.com/p/CnzY9QTL2s9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#dogparkour with #scentwork items? We're progressing slowly but steadily through @theschoolofcaninescience #scentforsix course, and our next big task is to retrieve random objects scented with catnip. So far we've just been retrieving scented fluffy paintrollers and macrame fleecy toys (some are actually old duvet cover rather than fleece), but now I need to build the awareness that Cad needs to specifically identify the singular catnip scent, not catnip+fleece or catnip+cotton smells. The fun way to teach this is to scent random other household crap, so that only the catnip smell remains constant. So in the jar we have: A lovely sock he stole from me last week and tore a hole in the heel of An inhaler cover, already pocketed with toothmarks A fluffy cat toy he generally tries to pluck A jam jar lid A new folded bit of card A pre-ripped (by him) bit of card One sad leg from his favourite octopus toy A shoelace cat toy A loop of velcro A pen that's dead because he stole and chewed up the lid the other day A broken rodent water bottle lid A spare cat collar complete with bell A dried ash twig His toy tomato We've taken a long time to get to this stage as Cadvan doesn't find holding or retrieving items intrinsically reinforcing, so I had to teach the #retrieve from scratch. Convincing him to put something in his face to later spit out in return for food was HARD. If thing is in face I can't eat food? Why put thing in face in the first place?! I'm so impressed with his massive progress in such a relatively short space of time. It's doing wonders for his general self confidence and self belief too. (p.s. the #canineparkour was also a challenge, because small area slippery surface) #scentforsix #schoolofcaninescience #scentdog #scentworktraining #nosework #dogtraining #forcefreetraining #positivereinforcementtraining #workingchihuahua #smalldogsbigadventures #chihuahuauk #jackchi https://www.instagram.com/p/CFX8yYZsdML/?igshid=o77cciodxagu

Using play as reinforcement! You know how some people really like to read, but reading is quite a chore for others? Play is sort of the same for dogs! Some dogs love play so much, it can seem like a better reward than food to them, and other dogs could care less. . . Here I’m working on Luna doing a sit-stat while I brush her. She’s really not wild about body handling of any type, including brushing. I’m asking Luna to sit-stay and then doing 2-3 brushes before releasing her, marking her release with “yes!” and tossing her toy as the reward. . . I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty proud/overwhelmingly surprised at how well this went. We’ve worked on various parts of this exercise but hadn’t put it all together until this session! Well done, us!! Grooming is not a good excuse to restrain your dog into compliance!. . #trainyourdog #sitstay #positivereinforcement #forcefreetraining #forcefree #reactivedog #anxiousdog #aggressivedog #lab #labrador #ilovemydog #domorewithyourdog #dogtrainer #dogtraining https://www.instagram.com/p/CF5mrl6px4N/?igshid=opjl4w405p9b

«The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit and freedom.» 🔥 You know, lately I left out the liberty work, not because I'm not into it anymore (never!!!) but because we're going to start to compete in May and we are in a new category, with new obstacles and skilled riders😅 so now I prefer to insist a bit on our western training! But Lilly is very enjoying it, I didn't expect that she would be so willing❤ it is amazing what a #forcefreetraining could do!🍀 Ph. @ele_pann98 🔥 #lilly #lilbigfire #sempreepersempre #bestthinginmylife #alwaysandforever #bae #myonlyone #myhappyplace #babe #loveyou #tackless #love #liberty #horseman #horsemanship #bitless #barefoot #inlove #loveofalifetime #soulmate #libertycircle #tricktraining https://www.instagram.com/p/BwutD87hOAP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1p6qt70begbf7

If you follow this account… I believe you get to know several of the dogs. Parker, he’s a dog that two of us took out the first two times. He was so shut down. He would just sit in a corner. Now look at him… Society may have given up on him at one point, but volunteers were there to see what kind of dog he actually was. Volunteers tag teamed him toward success. Now he’s in the @k9youthalliance program and excelling. Hopefully he will find his forever home and complete this part of his story. Repost from @k9youthalliance • Parker ( #A2026760 ) and the rest of the K9YA pups are all smiles for week two of our program at North Central Animal Shelter 😃 #NonProfitLife #NonProfitOrganization #NonProfits #HumaneEducation #ForceFreeTraining #ShelterDog #RescueDogs #RescueDogsRule #ShelterDogsRock #AdoptDontShop #ShelterDogsOfInstagram #ShelterDogsAreTheBest #ShelterPup #ShelterDogs #DogTraining #AfterSchoolProgram #KidsHelpingDogsHelpingKids #YouthDevelopment #DogTraining #AgilityTraining #DogAgility #lashelterdogs #KidsAndDogs #DogsAndKids #adoptdontshop🐾 #adoptdontbuy #adoptdontshop❤️ (at Friends of North Central Shelter - Los Angeles Animal Services) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkHZfkPvWXU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Great article in Psychology Today about why we need to educate dog owners about force free training and how it benefits the relationship between a dog and their person. I'm a big advocate for positive reinforcement training, no aversives! #cosmopolitanpetcharlotte #cosmopolitanpet #superiorpetsittingservice #forcefreetraining #positivereinforcementdogtraining #bekind https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ18Y3IutKj/?utm_medium=tumblr

According to behavioral sciences, rewarded behavior is repeated. The system encourages the desired behavior, and when it occurs, it is rewarded to ensure its continuity.
All living beings have reward centers in their brains; rewards activate these centers, strengthening the learning process. Reward can mean anything your dog loves—whether it’s a favorite toy or a beloved command.

Max did great today during our walk. Less grass eating and way less stopping in protest for a treat. Treats were spaced out a lot more, more praise was added, walking pace was changed pretty often, and small sniff games in the grass was added as well. The sniff games was to entice him to engage in his environment more than just me. He has progressed very quickly since the first time I walked him which was about 4 walks ago within 2 weeks. He already had a good loose leash Foundation with his guardians. He just would stop frequently in hopes to get a treat instead of just auto check ins. He would eat grass aggressively as well. Now he can walk about 8 or so houses before I give a treat and he is perfectly fine and happy to continue the walk. He's such a smart boy and just wants to work. 🐾 #forcefreetraining #rewardbasedtraining #dogwalker #dogwalkerlife #dogtrainer #southbendindiana #southbend #indiana #pitbullsofinstagram #staffordshirebullterrier #staffiesofinstagram #pitbull (at South Bend, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRbm0BslsEh/?utm_medium=tumblr

Working on some target discrimination. This one was particularly hard for both cats since we’ve worked so much with the carrier. They didn’t want to offer any other behaviors when “kennel up” was a possibility...and after the sessions were over they kept squishing in there at the same time and wouldn’t get out. At least we’ve got a solid +CER going on? Gonna work on this game more moving forward.

I was teaching Cad the start of leg weaves this morning, as a friend had convinced me that would be cool and I figured it would help his unbalanced lateral flexion. But after a couple of minutes he asked to do some more of this instead. If Cad asks to do different training I always like to go along with him if possible, as I find it results in better engagement, and through that, improved learning. We need 'middle' as his starting position for active retrieve #scentwork, but Cadvan has HUGE anxiety regarding wanting to be able to look at me head on during training at all times. When I first homed him he didn't want to engage with choice-based leaning at all, and this is one of our last hangups from that. Staring at a washer on the floor for #scentforsix for several months has helped, but it's still anxiety-inducing for him. So I've been sloooowly teaching this independently for a few weeks now. Started with capturing outside in the garden, then moving to nose target with a hand cue he already knows from #dogparkour. That was only partially successful though as he kept targeting my hand from in front of me, even when I tried to manipulate the environmental setup to make doing so difficult 😂 The other day I introduced a side target (his right ribs to my right leg) in addition to the nose target, and that's really helped him nail the position. Today, with his request that we work on this, I straightened up a little, and also added the vocal cue. Very pleased to see in the replay how waggy his tail is. #dogtraining #clickertraining #positivereinforcementtraining #positivereinforcementdogtraining #forcefreetraining #rewardbasedtraining #choicebasedtraining #trickdog #targettraining #scentworktraining #nosework #schoolofcaninescience #sportsdog #dogsports #nonstopdogwear https://www.instagram.com/p/CCn7LuwlivZ/?igshid=dvwcbdagh63q

. 💀 Pastikan rumput tidak mendapatkan perawatan kimia seperti pupuk, pestisida, herbisida, dll. Jika tidak yakin, hindari rumput tersebut. ------------------ 🌿 Earth's snuffle mat: the grass! Here's an activity you can do during your walk/outdoor time: scatter some treats or food on the grass and let your cat (or dog) sniff them out. If your cat (or dog) is just starting out, try to look for shorter patch of grass so it's easy for him to root through to get the food. . 💀 Make sure the grass is untreated. That means no chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, etc) used. If unsure, just skip. . . #enrichment #animalenrichment #felineenrichment #catenrichment #canineenrichment #dogenrichment #jakartadogtraining #dogtraining #dogtrainingbogor #bogor #bogordogtraining #cibuburdogtraining #cibubur #balidogtraining #dogtrainingbali #latihkucing #latihanjing #forcefreetraining https://www.instagram.com/p/CPcfOpdAG3p/?utm_medium=tumblr
