SWIPE TO SEE TOFU, the Boxer/Shepherd at my arrival. AS PROMISED in our PRIOR REEL, this is the result of 90 minutes of work. Watch our prior reel to see some of the work. Tofu @aviamy_ finally relaxed with me after finally learning to trust a person making decisions. You can tell by his soft smiling eyes as well as by the ears. There’s no tension on the lead either, proving he was calm and trusting. So, again, Tofu, did NOT bite me. Why? I approached with inexhaustible patience, gave him the respect he deserved as a living, sentient being but also didn’t shy away from his defensive “faux frightening” posturing. When it’s explained like that, I guess it seems simple. To us, it IS simple because it’s natural, genuine and pure, but it really must be a gentle, perfectly choreographed dance in order to be successful. We want what’s best for your dog and therefore, you, and the other way around. Have I been bitten before? Yep. It all comes with the territory. It’s easy to avoid bites when you’re super selective and have no issue turning people and dogs away. We don’t operate like that though. Using play as reinforcement! You know how some people really like to read, but reading is quite a chore for others? Play is sort of the same for dogs! Some dogs love play so much, it can seem like a better reward than food to them, and other dogs could care less. . . Here I’m working on Luna doing a sit-stat while I brush her. She’s really not wild about body handling of any type, including brushing. I’m asking Luna to sit-stay and then doing 2-3 brushes before releasing her, marking her release with “yes!” and tossing her toy as the reward. . . I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty proud/overwhelmingly surprised at how well this went. We’ve worked on various parts of this exercise but hadn’t put it all together until this session! Well done, us!! This is Mooshie who is VERY reactive to… the gate, guests, wheelie bins, scooters, bikes, cars, dogs, people…. 😅😅 Then he takes that mind set out onto the walk! 😖😬 But after training we also enjoyed his best walk to date! We can help. Some folks have asked and even criticized the trademarked stance we take in most of our photos. Greta suggested long ago, to take a knee next to the four legged client. Without the right mindset, and therefore, presence, a reactive, anxious dog like Milo NEVER would have been secure enough to be photographed in a sit. Sitting can be a position of vulnerability even without a stranger’s teeth so close by. We must remember, our faces carry teeth with them, just like a dog. Hence, our look can be considered by dogs to be at least, rude, if not overstimulating and worst of all, confrontational or threatening. So this pose isn’t about the photo itself, its about the dog; about the work. It proves trust has been built! A cute little video of Ellie working hard to control her excitement during pickup today!
