Holes and Muscles

So on this good day, I would like to discuss a scene in Spirit End, the fifth book of the Spirit series, and then the further implications.

To set the tone of this post, the general strengths of each of the four main characters are heavily described.

Josef is a heavy hitter, he does most of the lifting in the trio's heists, he's portrayed as the brawn of the group.

Nico has superhuman demon strength, as well as pure strength of spite.

Miranda has a mental, emotional, and magical fortitude like no other, and also gotta have some sort of athletic ability with her riding skills (cus listen I can lift a lot but if you think I could hoist myself onto a full sprinting ghosthound you'd be sorely mistaken).

And then Eli is shown to be, stronger then he looks, but is obviously not intended to be the strong man, that's what he has Josef for. Brawns and wit, its a group effort. But that's not to say he's weak, as such this post would be very different.

SO. Eli is a sneak, a cat burglar with too many dramatics involved. And it is implied that while he doesn't show it often in the story line, he is a skilled climber and possible parqourist. [I'm using Gueseppe Monpress' "clawhook and line" throwing skills in Spirit Rebellion as experience using a grappling hook for climbing. And Eli's two window escapes in Osera in Spirit War. He was really climbing all over that palace looking for Nico too.]

This leads me to a hole at the bottom of a cavern under the Council of Thrones. Spoilers ahead as usual.

Summery of the context, Eli's mother Sara has him arrested and after they chat a bit she sends him down to her only dungeon. Which is my favorite kind of cell, an oubliette. A deep cell set in the ground, it's only entrance a trap door at the top. (Oubliettes can have a way up and down, or they don't. In Spirit Rebellion, Miranda gets shoved into an old drain well that is repurposed as an oubliette and it has no way up or down.)

This oubliette has a ladder built into the side of the hole, and also surprise! his father at the bottom.

When Eli first attempts to make his escape from this cell, he is described as hanging upside down by his legs and tapping on the door. And this boggled my brain when I first read it. Because Eli shows here a great deal of flexibility and strength.

"And with that, he started to climb the iron rungs hand over hand, leaving Banage staring dumbfounded as he vanished into the dark.

Twenty minutes later, Eli was starting to wish he had been a little less cocky. He was hanging upside down under the circular door, knees looped over the second rung of the metal ladder for support while his hands ran over the door’s overlapping rings of polished steel."

and then moments later,

"He flopped back, dangling from the wall by his knees so the door wouldn’t have the privilege of seeing him fume. This just made the door cinch down tighter with a haughty clink, and Eli gritted his teeth. Yep, definitely a jerk door."

This paints a very clear picture for the set up of the oubliette. But Eli's position might be a little confusing.

Luckily while I am not the world's greatest thief, I do have a convenient wall mounted ladder in my house, and a little brother. So let me explain.

We tried several angles and ideas, and could somewhat replicate Eli's position, with his legs looped through the ladder and pressed to the wall, and his arms to the trap door. And not for a lack of trying, couldn't hold a position, let alone think while doing it- and most definitely not for 20 minutes.

We even tried other ideas like being propped in a sitting position with our arms up, instead of this laid back position.

But the second description I have supplied from the book, describes him hanging from his knees upside down, and to get into this position, the wall opposite the ladder has to be far enough away for you to lean back. So if he's trying to get a feel for the entirety of trap door, which covers the whole hole, this crunched position doesn't give you the reach. And since neither I nor Sqweeptaint (an alias) could properly do this hold, here's a quick drawing.

And with that, I remind you Eli Monpress did this without a care in the world, for 20 minutes. The core strength and flexibility needed to do this is fucking insane. And that's the post.

The way Valiant said he felt about guilt and envy was unsurprising, but his confusion left Tsubayuki disheartened once again. To have lived for so long, ignorant of the feelings that would come from killing others and destroying lives. Only to suddenly be given awareness of them because some heartless god wasn't happy with you? She can't imagine it being anything short of miserable.

Her expression softened as he looked back down at the floor. She fought back a scowl at the mention of arceus once more. The sound of ice crunching in her fists as she clenched them. The air around her grew cold enough for a crystal flurry to form as the zoroark went on about how uncomfortable these motions made him feel. And in a demeanor that reminds her of a child just trying to make sense of things around him.

It was almost too much for her to keep calm.

But then she noticed something.

He paused.

He paused after he told her guilt makes his job difficult. And she felt a spark of hope for him from what she heard next. And then the lopunny's heart sank.

There truly was so much Valiant didn't know, and so much for her to explain. And yet she'd be damned twice over if she didn't do her best.

There was a pause as Tsubayuki sat there, looking Valiant in the eyes, there being confliction within her own as she thought about how to answer his questions.

"No. Emotions are... A wonderful thing. And it is fine to be confused as they can be rather complex. But they are a part of what makes us who we are. Including you, even with how few you have felt so far. And the negative emotions play a part in that just as much as the positive ones. As they all have a purpose for existing." She explained.

"Guilt is supposed to hurt so you will be less inclined to repeat what made you feel it again. As feeling joy will lead you to want to do more of what gives you that feeling. And there are many other positive emotions like joy that you can feel with the negative ones."

"Emotions can also tell you something about someone from what they feel in response to certain things. For example, you feeling guilt from hurting and killing tells me you are not a bad mon. Because someone who is bad would not have such a feeling from that." She continued.

"I do hope this all making a bit more sense to you. As someone who has been able to remain myself thanks to my emotions. I would encourage you to try and discover more of them. And I could tell you more about them if you would like." Tsubayuki said with a sypathetic smile. However that smile faded as ice started to cover the bottom of the lopunny's ear fluff as she tried to remain composed for what she was about to say next.

"And yes, what you see in others is indeed called fear. An emotion one often feels when their life is being threatened." Tsubayuki's tone grew stern as ice crept further up her ears. "And I have no doubt in my mind that these negative emotions making your job hard is exactly why arceus did not want you to have them in the first place." She stated. Her stoic gaze drifting to the floor as she clenched her fists again.

She knew that was why. But for Valiant's sake, she needed to say it out loud. However at this point, the lopunny would've been unable to keep that thought to herself. But that did beg the question for her. Does this arceus have a reason for having this zoroark kill for them?

She figured now would be a good a time as any to ask.

Tsubayuki looks back up at the zoroark before her with a slightly less stoic expression. "If I may ask, does arceus ever tell you what it is that these mortal do to justify sending you after them?" She felt she knew the answer but at this point she needed to hear it for herself. However she also knew this was not what the conversation was about. And would not blame Valiant for wishing to continue talking more about emotions instead.

I definitely don't think Kaine can fix whatever Ben/Chasm has going on, and he's likely just gonna make him worse. But he's also strong enough to stop him from putting a fork in a god damn electrical outlet long enough for someone else to come up with a solution.

First half of Forecasting Love and Weather was so good they were mature and talked to each other the second half was trash I thought perhaps they would stay together and go through things together but somehow the cheating second leads got to stay together? Yeah Didn't like them lmao It was like episodes of the main leads not getting together after they broke up until the almost end of the final episode.
