hand sanitizer
i had a spanish test the next period which i hadn't revised for and was totally shitting myself, and knew my teacher wouldn't accept me faking an illness, because she would see right through the bullshit.
and my undiagnosed unmedicated adhd self thought the best way to get out of said test (cos this was at high school, i couldn't just leave during the school day without a note from a member of staff in the medical room or from a parent) would be to actually be ill.
i thought that drinking a small amount of hand sanitizer would make me an innocent amount of ill - bad enough that i'd look a bit rough and could go home by playing the pity card, but mild enough that i wouldn't actually feel sick when i got home. i also thought that the effects of drinking it would be virtually instantaneous.
i was so wrong.
i swallowed it, and sat there for a few seconds. nothing happened. the inside of my mouth felt like shit because it tasted horrible, obviously, and my lips and tongue hurt, but it didn't have the instant effect i stupidly assumed it would.
so i sat there perfectly alright in maths (the lesson before spanish), and the lesson was soon over. i still felt fine, and was starting to panic, as i now had to go into the spanish classroom for the test. little did i know, the hand sanitizer was slowly starting to get to work in my body
realising my plan had been a failure and i was going to have to do this test anyway, i sat down at my desk and the rest began.
about 20 minutes in, i started to feel a bit weird. my stomach felt weirdly light, and the page in front of me looked like it was moving a bit. but it was still pretty mild, so i ignored it and kept working.
by about ten minutes before the end of the test, i was starting to feel really off. like my stomach felt even worse - that same bizarre lightness, but also like there was something moving inside it, and it started hurting a bit in a strange way. i started to get a really bad headache, and the edges of my vision went a very weird shade of pink. as in things in my peripheral vision were tinted pink.
in my idiocy to try and get out of the test by drinking hand sanitizer, i didn't realise the worst part.
which was that because i hadn't been sent home before or during my spanish test, my next lesson on my timetable was double p.e., which i had to go to.
once i was in my p.e. kit, we were in the gym choosing what sport to do that day when i suddenly had to lie down on the floor because the room looked like it was moving around. my head was absolutely pounding by this point, and my ears were ringing so loudly (i have tinnitus anyway but this was insane levels) that i couldn't even think. i couldn't feel my legs, and while i could move my arms, i couldn't feel sensation on them. everything felt intensely surreal, and it was scaring me. i was really freaking the fuck out. my stomach felt awful, my vision was really dim (best way i can describe it is like if you turned the brightness down on your phone, that's what it was like), and everything had gone purple. bright fucking purple.
i lay there for a while, and luckily got along very well with the p.e. teacher so she let me sit out that lesson, i said i was ill or something. i then had to walk 20 minutes home after that. it is genuinely the most horrible bodily experience i have ever had.
so yeah, don't drink hand sanitizer to get out of an exam. it really doesn't work, and it will fuck you up beyond belief. it took me about a week before that weird surreal feeling went away.
also it tasted like ass, 0/10 do not recommend
what is THE worst thing you've ever drank. all liquids acceptable. please tell me what it was, bonus points for why

Now playing...DOLCE by Cazzu
Tumblr media
You remember it as if it were the first time,That warm kiss that Franco gave you every time you arrived,Only this time you were leaving."Speak up and pray if whatever you are about to say is a damn excuse." You said picking up your bag from the floor facing the open the door."i'm sorry...I was drunk and I didn't tell you because-" You shut the door right on his face and with tears in your eyes you walked towards your car.
He didn't even tell you, it happened three months ago, and he didn't tell you?. You opened your phone seeing the photo of him kissing that girl, that girl who said she was just a friend, you even liked her posts and she liked yours.
3 months later...
"I'm better than ever" You said looking at yourself in the bathroom mirror, on the counter there was some nail polish and makeup. You sighed and went to your closet,Searching through your dresses you saw a dark red silk fabric highlighting between them, you slowly pulled it out but when you saw the whole piece you quickly threw it back into the closet,a knot formed in your throat and tears didn't wait to fall
"This damn dress..." You didn't even know if that phrase would help you feel better,Franco said it that same night, where he took you to his hotel room and delicately undressed you while repeating that pharse.'This damn dress...'
Your breathing was fast, you quickly grabbed your black tube dress and closed the closet
You went out in that dress, you were going to a club for your friend's birthday so nothing too exagerated. Sitting at the bar you watched your still cocktail on the table,The music made the liquid vibrate a little 'why do i bother in trying?' You said to yourself. You got up and when you turned around you crashed into someone."s-shit... i'm sorry i didn't-" When you look up you saw no one else but Lando Norris himself, how embarrasing you tought, In addition to being hurt by your breakup, you just crashed into Lando
"oh no. Shit how embarrasing!" You covered your face slightly as he laughed. "Don't worry, it was my mistake." You already knew each other, Franco introduced you two, sometimes you greeted each other in the paddock, is Nice to see him for the last time
"Are You ok...?" He said putting his hand on your shoulder, your breathing was laborated and your eyes crystallized."yes shit...I just need some fresh air" He quickly grabbed your arm and guide you all over the place to the exit, where the breeze of air hit you and relaxed your whole body."Thanks..." You said still holding on to his arm
"Someone did something to you?" Lando said grabbing your waist "what? Oh nonono, i'm just a little bit tired..."You said fixing your dress."I think I should go back, my friend is waiting for me..." you said turning towards the door making Lando grab you again."You're not going anywhere like this." Your way of walking was clumsy and you were still holding your dizzy head with your hand.
You sat on the sidewalk and covered your face as you burst into tears,Lando opened his eyes wide and sat beside you putting an arm on your shoulder."what- what's wrong?" He said nervously.
"it's just-" You said as your voice your trembled, honestly you hated seeing how people on Twitter supported Franco 'I'm sure she cheated first' or 'i would've done the same cause she is prettier' or just any bullshit justifying Franco's actions. But you kept quiet, you saw how THAT girl said that there were no broken hearts, that she was just a new girlfriend, not a lover.
And though you didn't want to make any statements for the media, you had reached a limit, a limit that hurt you like a stab in your chest, carrying all the weight and guilt on your back. You just wanted to spit out all your hatred and let off all your steam.
"I'm tired of pretending everything is okay when it clearly isn't!" You said with rage,Your tears fell down your cheeks while Lando pulled you into a hug, pressing your face on his chest.
"is this because of...Franco?" Unable to speak through crying, you nodded."Why don't we go home? We can forget about that dickhead..." Lando said trying to cheer you up, you nodded as he stood up putting his coat around your shoulders.
That night Lando took you in his car to his house, the two of you stayed curled up in his bed looking at the large window that illuminated the room with the moonlight. They stared at each other as you caressed his cheek, without any remorse he pulled you into a warm kiss.
2 months later...

"Te creí,y yo no doy más de una oportunidad"
"I believed you,And I don't give more than one chance "
You looked at your phone and saw how he now acted innocent now, pretending and saying that I was aware of this 'extracurricular' relationship. You looked at yourself in the large mirror and started putting on your makeup, your playlist started playing in the background, A guitar rhythm reached your ears as you continued to look at yourself in the mirror, DOLCE by cazzu began to play.
"Ojalá te dure eso de aparentar. Mujeres bonitas ninguna real"
"I hope this 'pretending' lasts for you. Pretty women, none real"
You remember those afternoons watching the sunset while you cuddle with him tangled in a blanket. How you did sacrifice thousands of opportunities to be with him, leave your country to travel with him for the season.
"Como Yo, que contigo estaba a morir y a matar"
"like me,that for you i was willing to die and kill"
And you saw how she didn't even bother to go see him race, she only posted something if he reaches podium and then just photos on a yacht with him. You actually expected him to realize that you were there from the beginning. And it is better for him to know that if he ever looks for that support from his partner, he won't find it.
"Dudo que una así te vuelvas a encontrar
me voy pero antes me voy a vengar."
"I doubt you'll ever meet a girl like me again
I'm leaving but first I'm going to take revenge"
You headed to your closet to pull out the soft, fine, dark red silk fabric that was sticking out from between the dresses and gave it a Big glance to appreciate it. You wore that dress when you met Franco at an event, it was the dress that made him fall in love with you. You dropped your clothes, leaving you in your underwear, to start putting on the dress.Today was the FIA awards, and you would accompany Lando, to Hard launch your relationship. And why not show off that beautiful DOLCE & GABBANA dress to show him what he's missing? You were having the best time ever, Lando was kind and good, you loved everything about him.
A Besides, it was to be expected that a proud guy like Lando would love to make everyone know that you were his, that he would be getting that dress out of you that night, and he loved knowing that Franco would be mad and jelous. You were waiting for him to come in his luxury sports car and get you, you already felt the sweet taste of revenge on your tongue
You took a big breath as you grabbed your purse,Fluffy dark red coat and fixed your hair before going out.
"yo también sé cómo portarme mal...
y se bien que hacer para hacerte llorar"
"I also know how to misbehave...
and i know exactly what to do to make You cry"
You sighed and turned off the lights in your house, put away your makeup and tidied everything. You sighed nervously and looked at yourself in the mirror for the last time thinking 'This is what he deserves for being a dick...'Reoste And you grabbed your cell phone, turning off the music to put it in your purse, without forgetting to listen another line of the song
"a ver si aprendes a valorar..."
"to see if you learn to value me..."
You smiled and put it in your purse, You heard a horn and went fastly to the door. And there it was, Lando Norris right in front of You "Fuck...You are gorgeous." He said putting a hand on your waist and kissing you,You smiled and walked towards his car."don't get to cocky tonight Norris!" You scoffed getting into the as he laughed."i can't help when i know that this idiot is going to be wanting you all night long" He said getting into the car and putting a hand on your to squeeze your thigh.
When they arrived at the place, the paparazzis started taking pictures of you two like crazy, Lando grabbed you by the waist and posed with you."it's going to be a long night..." It was impossible to ignore Franco's gaze on you all night, especially when Lando noticed it and started kissing you or putting an arm around you. Although it was too funny to see him like that while his girlfriend didn't even notice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I really hope that everyone who calls him Casanova or a Flirt realize what an idiot he is, do You think the dates he took me on were his idea?, but of course not!, Do you really think a man like him is a casanova when I had to teach him how to basically have a girlfriend?, I don't believe it...I don't believe it." You said confessing for the first time your thoughts on the situation in a interview after keeping quiet for so long."I hope you know there's a little bit of me in every single part of that person and every time that person does something nice I want you to think, 'Did that really come completely from him?'." You laughed."And now that i'm in a very healthy relationship with my boyfriend i understood how toxic was it when i was with this person...but i really hope he is happy now! and I wish him the best of luck, no hard feelings!".
"se te olvidó que lo que sabes te lo enseñé yo"
"You forgot that I taught you what you know"

🕸️ .WEBSTRING. ゜– prologue
"LOOK AT HER! ISN'T SHE SO PRETTY?" hanni points to one of the cheerleaders, totally enamoured by her beauty. frankly, you couldn't care less because you were too busy thinking about a certain ginger cheerleader who was currently missing from the sidelines. hanni notices your distracted behavior and smiles smugly at you. "you miss megan don't you?" she wiggles her eyebrow in amusement like what she said was the funniest thing ever.
you snap your head towards her with a sharp glare, your eyes narrowed and threatening– with no actual malicious intent. "shut up, no i don't. you're getting the wrong idea," you argued. your chin was on the palm of your hand, your elbow resting on your knee. hanni only rolls her eyes and goes back to watching the game.
"what are you thinking of then?" she questions. you merely shrug.
"the cheerleaders are about to perform but she's not here."
"mm, sad you can't see her dance around?" now it was your turn to roll your eyes, your free hand coming up to push her head away. "it's not like that," you say. "i'm gonna go to the bathroom." you got up from the bleachers and left hanni alone to mumble insults by herself. upon entering the restroom, you saw megan trying to get out of a– spider-girl suit? why in the world would she have that?
"shit, shit, i'm gonna be so late," she rambles, unaware of your presence. when she turned around to be met with your face, her eyes widened in shock and her lips parted. "you're not... you're not supposed to see this.."
"you're spider-girl?" you point an accusing finger at her as if she wasn't wearing the suit right in front of your eyes. "i can explain!" megan exclaims. "what's there to explain, you're literally wearing–"
"ok, later! i'm gonna be late to the cheer performance. can you just... help me out of this?" she pleads, holding both of her hands up as she tried to reason with you. "i don't get out of this suit well under pressure."
"...yeah, i-i guess." you walk over to her and began to help her get out of the suit. once she was out, she looks more like a high schooler in her cheer uniform than some superhero saving the city. "i'll pay you back somehow, uh..."
"yn."
"yn! i'll pay the favor back soon," she promised. "you save the city already, there's no need–" you were interrupted by megan.
"no! no, i should! i can, uhm, swing you around the city if you want." the offer was tempting, but with your fear of heights, you weren't exactly sure. "think about it! thank you, again." she stuffs the suit back into her backpack and dashed towards the door. before fully leaving, she pauses and looks back with a smile on her face. "see you around, pretty?"
you almost choked on air when she called you that. it was totally out of the blue! "okay..." you nod. when she finally left, you let out a shaky breath, your hand clamping over your mouth. you can see the pinkish tint of your cheeks through the mirror, and you can feel the warmth and your heart beating through your chest. megan was so smooth for someone with no conscience of their actions, and it somehow made you a blushing mess. "how annoying."

🩹 .ADHESIVE. ゜
THREE KNOCKS ON YOUR WINDOW distracted you from your textbooks. it was weird, and fairly creepy, that something was knocking on your window considering how late it was. you grab one of your heavy dictionaries and got up from your seat, holding the book near yourself as you lifted your blinds. it was a dumb move but the person outside was even dumber. "what're you doing here, spidey?" you asked after you opened the window, seeing megan standing there, clutching her side.
"oh? nickname basis already?" megan chuckles, but it sounded weak. she was a coughing fit not even a few seconds later. even breathing made her chest hurt. "you said you're in a medical program right?" you nod, unsure of what megan wanted from you. "can you help me?"
"do you always need help?"
"i'm serious! look!" she shows you the deep cut underneath her hand, blood dripping down her fingers as she held her side. your eyes widened in concern and you immediately pull her in, opening the window wider for her to enter. "what the fuck did you do?" you exclaimed while your eyes took in all of the scrapes and bruises. megan only shrugs, and you fight back every urge to hit her.
"i saved the day?"
"yeah, no shit sherlock. it was rhetorical." not wanting blood to stain your bed, you sat her down on your chair at your desk. fortunately, you kept a first aid box in your drawer. "don't make too much noise. my parents are asleep and they don't need to know spider-girl is in my room."
"you got it, ma'am." her hand came up to do a salute but it was hurting too much to keep it there. "ow.."
"i need this suit off," you said, but the smug grin and teasing look on megan's face makes you want to punch her. "stop with that look. i'm being deadass right now. i can't treat your wounds correctly."
"okay, okay, sorry..." it took about five minutes to get her out of the suit, four minutes longer compared to the first time, mostly due to how she was whining in pain. by the time the suit was off, she was left in a t-shirt and shorts. "jesus, you look like adam sandler," you pointed out.
"was that necessary?" megan frowned.
"no, but it had to be said." you opened the first aid box and grabbed a nearby cloth, making sure it's clean before putting it on her cut and applying slight pressure onto the wound. megan winces in pain, throwing her head back on the chair.
"i'm being as gentle as i can, you crybaby. stay still!" you scolded. when the bleeding was reduced to a minimum, you removed the bloody cloth from her cut, grimacing upon seeing the fabric soaked in red fluid. "oh my god.." you toss the cloth somewhere else, deciding it'll be a future you problem. right now, you're focused on wrapping bandages around her.
you lift her shirt, ordering her to hold it up for you, before grabbing the roll of bandages in the med kit. you unroll it and placed it over her wound, wrapping around her stomach a few times. once done, you got up and went over to your closet, getting one of your oversized shirts for megan– since she was taller than you by a whole lot. you toss her the shirt and turned around to let her change.
"you don't have to turn around, y'know?" she said while putting on the shirt.
"i feel obligated to," you shrugged. "that's stupid," she laughed. "ok, you can turn around now." you turned around to face her but all the air gets knocked out of your lungs. who knew she would look nice in your clothes, let alone look better in it than you do. "what? do i look pretty?" megan taunted.
"yeah– no. what?" you stuttered, blinking a couple times to get your act together. she only chuckles and shake her head, leaning back into the chair. you noticed how her face was pretty messed up and felt the need to take care of that too. "how well do you do with rubbing alcohol?" you ask vaguely. she seemed to have gotten the memo based on how terrified she looked.
"no! no. no. we're not doing that." she tried to protest but you were already soaking a cotton ball with the liquid. "yn..." she begged, clasping her hand together. "you don't have to be so cruel!"
"except for the fact i'm not cruel? you're just whiny." you dab at a cut on her cheek, and a hiss comes through her lips, her fingers gripping onto the arms of the chair to keep herself from whacking your arm away. "spidey, i swear to god if you don't sit still..." your patience was thinning at her squirming, but a part of you couldn't help but feel bad. "come on, i promise it'll be over in a jiffy."
megan was hesitant but eventually nods, giving into your sweet coaxing. over the course of about three minutes, megan felt like she was traveling to and back from hell. the burns of the alcohol was seeping into the cuts around her face, a deep frown implanting itself onto her forehead. "is it done? are we done? am i done?"
"almost." you throw the cotton ball into the trash, taking a mental note to throw away the trash and cloth in the morning. "just a few more small bandaids and you can rest." megan whines as you began to placed tiny bandaids on her wounds, wanting the night to be over with. "there. now, we're officially done."
megan internally cheers but remembered she has to go back home. maybe she could've treated her own wounds at her place instead of being fifteen minutes away from the comfort of her bed. "can i sleep over?" your head snaps towards her, a bewildered look in your eyes. you've never agreed to any of this and only did it out of the kindess of your own heart. so why couldn't you deny her request?
"...yeah. sure. you've had enough on your plate for one night." you went over to your bed, fixing up a couple things to make space for her. you placed a pillow and a blanket on the floor next to your bed. "i'll sleep on the floor."
"what? why? it's your bed," megan argued, getting up from the chair, putting the pillow and blanket back on the bed. "it'll be fine, right?" you couldn't come up with an excuse as to why sleeping in the same bed would be a bad idea, so you gave in. "guess not..." you mumble. you climbed in first, your side pressed against the wall as you tried to keep a reasonable amount of space between you two.
megan giggled and got in afterwards, staying on her side of the bed. there was an awkward moment until megan looks at you and opens her arms. you stared at her in disbelief, but you also wanted to be held by her. "come here," she beckoned. you shake your head and she kept persisting. it went back and forth for a while until megan had enough and pulled you in herself, tucking your head in her chest. "see? was it that hard?" she teased when she felt you melt into her.
"shut up, you're so annoying."

💬 .FIRST QUARREL. ゜(suggestive)
MEGAN WAS TOO PROTECTIVE. she was constantly checking up on you during patrol or getting distracted trying to see if you're safe or not, resulting in her getting heavily injured. you were flattered at first, but it has gotten way too out of hand. you couldn't even go out with her not watching your every move from a nearby rooftop or whatnot!
you were walking in the streets, your mind wandering of how you could talk about this to her, ignoring the buzzing of your phone. suddenly, a loud noise roared behind you and a loud stomp made it feel like an earthquake was happening. you turned around to see some funny looking guy in a suit the size of hulk, his vision trained on you.myou swallowed hard, your feet slowly backing up with every step the villain took towards you.
spider-girl swings in a second later, her foot colliding with his face, sending him down. the fall was quite hard since the suit was heavy and practically made out of metal. megan quickly rushed over to you, pulling you into the nearby alleyway. "what're you doing? i texted you multiple times to go somewhere safe!"
"well i didn't see them! so stop blaming me so much!" you snapped, your hands shoving her chest, pushing her back. she moves your hand away a little roughly. "if you checked your phone, you would've!" she argues.
"megan, have you ever thought that you're too protective? because you are! every waking moment is you checking if i'm okay when i am!" you let out a frustrated huff, your hands on your hips. "it's getting annoying."
"i'm just watching out for you! you're a huge target since an enemy saw you with me!" her voice falters for a moment before she recollected herself. "i almost lost you once, and i'm not taking any more risks!" she referred to when you got kidnapped and held hostage, which made you end up in the hospital with serious injuries. you were barely breathing when she found you. "if i had arrived a minute later then, you wouldn't be here right now."
"that was then. spidey, it's been six months–"
"six months or not, it could've happened again today!" she raised her voice, surprising you a little. "you don't know the other universe i've been to, and in every single one of them, you weren't here with me." her resolve was slightly cracking, her chest rising and falling with every sentence she shouted at you. your lips parted in shock, your brain short-circuiting for a hot minute.
"i..." you stammered. you remember her talking about it a while ago, and how it scared her for a long period of time. you knew it was a sensitive topic. your hands cautiously held her face, your thumb rubbing her cheek over her mask. "but i'm here with you, right now, in this universe." she leaned into your touch while listening to your words carefully. "you don't have to worry so much."
"but i have to."
you shake your head, your fingers lifting her mask to only reveal her lips. "no you don't. deep down, if you think i'm safe and sound, then i most definitely am, okay?" you lean in and place a soft, reassuring kiss on her lips. you were about to pull away when megan places her hands on your waist, pulling you closer to her body. your eyes flutter closed and you relaxed into the kiss, your arms wrapping themselves around her shoulders.
you tilt your head to the side as your arms tightened around megan, feeling like there was too much space between you. a small whimper escaped her lips and it drove you crazy. the sound of your lips on each other filled the quiet alleyway. your nails dug into her back when she broke away and trailed down to your neck, her lips peppering featherlight kisses onto the curve of your jaw.
her thumbs snuck its way under your shirt, grazing the soft skin of your stomach. you arched your back a little further, letting her pull you flush against her front. your hands slid down slowly, from her back to her shoulders to her chest, clutching on her suit as you move your head to give her easier access to your neck. until a loud ringing tone from megan's phone broke you two away from each other. megan groans and takes her phone out, seeing it's the police needing her to help clear up the scene and to calm down the civilians.
"well... i gotta go..." she began, looking at you with a knowing look. "but..."
"you know where you should be tonight," you said. she grins and plants another kiss on your lips. "you bet i do."

🤍 .ALL YOURS. ゜(slightly suggestive at end)
A SOFT KNOCK AT YOUR WINDOW let you know that megan was outside on the fire escape right outside your room. you smile to yourself, hanging the towel you were using to dry your hair over your chair. you walked over to the window, opening your blinds and lifting the glass upwards.
"hey, ma," megan greeted when you opened the window. she was upside down, her hands holding onto the web at held her up. you only rolled your eyes playfully, your elbows coming to rest on the window frame. "what're you doing here, spidey?" you ask but there was no signs of you wanting her to leave.
"what? can't i see my favorite girl?" her head leaned in and placed a soft, lingering kiss on your lips despite her mask still fully covering her face. you giggle at the absurdity of it all, your hands reaching up to lift her mask to reveal her lips.
"kiss me properly, idiot," you demanded playfully. megan listens and leaned in again, your lips officially connecting with hers. the kiss was tender, gentle– anything you would describe a kiss full of love. when you break away, you could only laugh, your head dipping and your shoulders shaking. "i can't with you being upside down," you chuckled.
"i can get down if you want." she didn't even wait for your answer when she let go of the web and landed on the fire exit with a small thud. you moved aside to let her climb through the window, making sure to make as little noise as possible so you both don't wake up your parents. "how's my angel?" she questions, her arm wrapping around your waist and pulling you into another kiss.
"never been better," you giggled, your head tilting up to meet her lips. "what about my pretty girl? everything alright? no injuries?"
"all clean and safe." she raised her hands up in mock surrender, showing no signs of serious wounds. your smile only widened and you engulf her into a hug. she hugged you back immediately, her arms wrapping around your torso, her hands resting on the small of your back. she buried her nose into your hair, inhaling the scent of your shampoo mixed with your natural calming scent. "you smell so good, baby."
"do i?" you ask, flattered. she nods, her finger brushing away the stray hairs from your face. "i need to dry my hair."
"no, keep it like this. at least for a couple more minutes," she pleaded, smelling your hair again. "it smells really good."
"i can always give you my shampoo."
"mm, i like it better on you." you laugh, your head falling onto her shoulder. "have i ever told you how annoying you are, spidey?" you ask. megan pretends to ponder before lamely putting up her index finger like a nerd. "you have. multiple times. but i'm your annoying spidey, aren't i?"
"mhm," you hum softly, pecking her on the lips. "you're all mine."
"well i hoped i was." she gently places a hand on your chest, pushing back onto your bed. she crawled on top of you right after, her lips already sucking on your neck hungrily. "i'm afraid your hair won't be dry for a while," she murmured, her voice muffled by your skin.
"i'm fine with that."

This has an ambiguous ending (for the most part) but I do have an idea for a part 2 if anyone is interested! Anyways, enjoy! - 🐇
(I'd also like to note that the italicized poetry is taken from Crush by Richard Siken, and Leaping Poetry by Robert Bly!)

I know your ghost, I see her through the smoke, She'll play her show
And you'll be watchin'
He caught himself watching you again. It had been habit for so long now. Checking on her from the corner of his eye. He had learned to act in such a way that it was hard to tell he was stealing a glance at her. Her. He needed to snap out of it.
He looked straight ahead, steadfast in his resolution to break old patterns. He could hear her from the end of the hall. She was briefing one of his teammates on the video they were about to film.
“I know this is hard but please try not to swear, at least not too much. The timbre of her laugh, echoing down the hall. Quinn  knew without looking at her that she was checking her phone. Her disorganized notes app, full of spare ideas for videos and poems that came to her during the twilight hours. “Oh! I know this is obvious but, try not to talk about anything personal that you or a teammate wouldn’t want 400 teenagers online to know.”  He watched from lowered lids as she brushed past him, a slight hesitation in her steps as her shoulder brushed against him. “That stuff’s just hard to edit out-“ her voice trailed off as they turned a corner. The reverb of her warm murmur echoing back to him, taunting him. He just knew she was reminding Brock not to talk about anything personal because of him.
He scuffed his covered skate against the worn floor. Tilting his head back against the wall. He closed his eyes, and imagined that he was waiting for her to walk with him, instead of someone else.
Wonder if you regret the secret
Of us, us
He could remember the first wrong turn.
“What do you mean you don’t want to tell anyone?” He had asked, confused, thumb stroking against her pulse point soothingly as she cradled his face.
“Quinn…” she had sighed, suddenly looking so small and vulnerable sitting on her old patterned couch. He kissed her palm, a small comfort.
“I mean, you’ve seen the weird shit people can comment about the wags.” He nodded. “Imagine just seeing that all day. All that negativity. And it’s just your job to navigate that and delete it. I’ve seen awful things about some of these women.” She swallowed, slipping her hand away from his cheek. He missed the warmth immediately, absently leaning into her orbit to make up for it. “I just,.. I don’t know what I would do. Knowing that people were saying those things about me.”
Quinn understood. Honestly the thought of seeing those kinds of things said about her…
Yeah. He could keep a secret for a few more months.
“Sure, sweetheart,” Quinn said, folding her into his arms. “We can keep it quiet for a little bit longer. Just until you’re comfortable.” He could feel her melt into him, relaxing at his agreement. Once she was more comfortable with the idea of them, he thought she wouldn’t mind what people would say.
It felt like what I've known
You're twenty-nine years old
So how can you be cold when I open my home?
Quinn  placed the last box on the bedroom floor, lovingly labeled “poetry <3”. As he gingerly cut through the packing tape, he heard a gentle knock on the door.
“You don’t need to knock,” he laughed, turning his head so he could look at her.
“I mean, it’s your house still-“ she said, anxiously shifting her weight from side to side. Quinn stood, fondly shaking his head as he approached her.
“Your house too now, sweetheart,” he said, wrapping his arms around his girl, and swaying from side to side.
“I just don’t want it to be too soon Quinn. It’s only been like, a year.” Shesaid, tense in his arms.
“Mi casa es tu casa, right?” he said jokingly, trying to get the woman in his arms to relax.
She laughed, encapsulating the room in warmth again. They melted into each other, the tension evaporating. “I don’t ever want to make you uncomfortable, Quinny.” Murmured softly into his shoulder.
Quinn hugged her tighter, trying to forge them together, “you could never make me uncomfortable,” he said as he placed his cheek atop her head. “I feel like I’ve known you forever.” And as he said that to her, he knew it to be true. This love was different, quiet— almost sacred.
And if history's clear, the flames always end up in ashes
And what seemed like fate
Give it ten months and you'll be past it (you'll be past it)
He knew it had to move at some point. Every morning it confronted him, like a ghoul living in his sock drawer. Quinn reached for the intruder, thumb brushing against delicate blue velvet as he withdrew the small ring box from its hiding place. The man sighed as he flipped it open once again. The light reflecting off of the diamond and shining small, nebulous glimmers of light across his tired face.
A click as he closed the box, the sound of a sharp thump. The little blue box landed somewhere amongst the debris on your abandoned side of the closet. It had been nearly 10 months. Out of sight, out of mind.
That night you were talkin'
False prophets and profits
They make in the margins
Of poetry sonnets
Quinn watched, transfixed as you read aloud to him. His head sat heavily on her thighs, savoring the feeling of her hand touching his hair absentmindedly. The words nearly escaped him, too immersed in the way her sweet lips shaped the words. Nectar falling from her mouth as she kept the meter.
“I had a dream about you. We were in the gold room where everyone finally gets what they want.
You said Tell me about your books, your visions made of flesh and light and I said This is the Moon. This is the Sun. Let me name the stars for you. Let me take you there. The splash of my tongue melting you like a sugar cube... We were in the gold room where everyone finally gets what they want, so I said What do you want, sweetheart? and you said-“
“Marry me.”
It was spoken on the breath of a sigh. Nearly inaudible. Still, the room seemed to lose some of its color.
“What?” You whispered, hand withdrawing from his hair, leaving an inexplicable dread lingering around his heart.
Quinn sat up, nose brushing hers. “I meant it.” He reached for her hand, shaking and limp in her lap. “Marry me. It’s all I’ve ever wanted.” He breathed out as he looked into her eyes earnestly.
“I-“
“I know you’re scared. And I know you don’t want anyone to know about us.” The man said, placing her hand on his heart, cradling it gently. “But I don’t care! I would marry you right this second if I could.” He leaned his forehead against her temple, murmuring “just you and me, baby. No one has to know. I would marry you in secret, as long as it means you’re  mine.” Quinn was rambling now, but he’d do anything to convince her. “I already have a ring and-“
His hand landed unceremoniously in his lap.
Before he could reach out, before he could even breathe, she slipped out of his grasp.
“I’m sorry.”
And Quinn felt like he would never breathe again, staring across the room at his sock drawer and the now open door to what was once their bedroom.
Robert Bly on my nightstand
Gifts from you, how ironic
Three drinks in, and Quinn was conquering his fears. There was 11 months of dust buildup on the slim book, still clinging to the paperback cover. He thumbed it open, nearly caving in and going back for another drink as he glimpsed the tail end of the note you had left for him underneath the title page.
“- hoping these poems will remind you of me when we’re apart.
Love you lots,
Yours-“
He flipped to another page, hoping to find something he hated enough that he could find the strength to finally throw this book out.
“Longing to find her in a phrase, and be close-“
Quinn closed the book.
Mistaken for strangers, the way it
Was, was
The moment he was  dreading was here. You approached him after practice, quietly waiting for the rest of the team to file past. You toyed with your phone anxiously, “Is it alright if I grab you for a quick video?” She looked as tired as he felt these days. He just stood, gazing at her, responding with a  slow nod. She smiled, relieved. Quinn had almost forgotten what it looked like in person. Still a such a sweet sight.
He leaned in slightly, irresistant to the gravity of your presence. As you opened your mouth to speak, lips quirked up into a private grin, a voice came from behind him.
One of the new girls on the social media team. She smiled as she approached. “I didn't realise you two were close! Guess it’s something to look forward to, huh?”
You forced a laugh saying, “Well, when you work with someone for two years, you get about as close as coworkers can get.”
Quinn’s spine straightened, in no mood for media duties now. He thought of the ring box, and all the photos he still had yet to delete. The stolen kisses in supply closets, the notes you left him in the margins of your favorite poetry books, highlighting secret code in between the stanzas
(“O love,  where are you leading me now?”). The words of her favorite poem echoed in his head, “As close as coworkers can get”
He mumbled something about putting his gear away as he brushed past you, no longer recognizing the foreign way your shoulder bumped against his.
Do you miss us, us? (Us, us, us)
The best kind, well, sometimes
Do you miss us?
He stood, leaning against his counter, trying to decide the best way to respond to this text.
Out of the corner of his eye he could see the cardboard box full of miscellaneous objects to donate, the creased cover of a poetry book peaking out.
He made his decision.
A blind date sounds great! Is she free Friday?

Note
Not to be That Guy but this isn't new. This has been going on 20+ years at least, because I remember seeing it way back in my early ff.net days, people only posting fic when they get x number of comments or faves or hits or whatever. It doesn't make it particularly exciting to encounter, especially as a reader, but it's not *new.*
Be upset by it if that's your thing, but the reason you're seeing it become more prevalent is because authors aren't getting engagement like they used to get. They're desperate for attention. Maybe there's some people who are doing it the other way around (writing fic to get attention on other platforms), but it stems from the same place: wanting attention.
And like you said, wanting attention isn't a bad thing. But it's not bad in ANY situation. It's human to want attention, to want validation, to want interaction, to want to be told your efforts at creating something were worthwhile (or that YOU are worthwhile). People may choose to go about acquiring this in unsavory ways if they can't figure out how to get it in ways you approve of, or they may want attention for unsavory things (like AI fic) but the wanting of attention isn't bad and it's not a somehow immoral or bad reason to write fic. It might not produce the same quality of fic, but bad fanfiction can be written regardless of how much someone loves something, and judging PEOPLE by the quality of their fic isn't cool.
Additionally, people have ALWAYS written fic for attention. I'm not saying everyone, I'm saying there's always been people who do it. And like I said, actually it's fine to do that. No one is forcing you to read those fics, or to follow that person, or to like anything they make. They're not doing anything that actually endangers fanfiction just by waiting to post chapters until they've gotten some attention. There's plenty of people not doing that, just like there's always been. They're not forcing you to do the same. Doing so doesn't legally endanger fanfiction the way asking for things like money would. Maybe it's annoying to you, personally, but that's not a fandom crime.
Are you also angry at artists who paywall their fanart on Patreon or similar? Because it's not really different. You could say they're withholding fan creations from the fandom until they get something in return (money). You could say they're not doing it because they love it, they're just doing it for money. Even though it's pretty well accepted (and I for one am happy any creator can make a living, or at least ease the burden of living, by creating stuff, if that's what they want to do). Fanfiction writers can't legally charge money the way artists can, but it's not so different to want something in return for effort.
Are you also mad that published authors write for money? That they don't publish their books unless they get a book deal and get paid? Is their writing worse just because they're doing it for their job, regardless of if they love it or not? Are you SURE that all fanfiction is worse if it's being done "for attention" rather than you judging fanfiction that's bad and blaming attention seeking as the problem? Are you SURE that's the path you wanna walk, when so many authors think their fic is bad and have imposter syndrome over the idea?
Are you SURE that the person posting for attention is a bad writer *because* they want attention? Or is it possible that they're just a bad writer and also happen to be sharing for attention?
Because I can tell you one universal truth about fanfiction.
EVERYONE shares it in public for attention. Everyone. If they didn't want it to be seen and enjoyed by others, they would just write it and never share it. I know PLENTY of authors that do exactly that- just write little fanfics for themselves and never share it. The only reason to post it in public is because you want someone else to be able to read it.
As much as you don't like seeing people hold fic hostage for attention, this supposedly morally pure stance that fanfiction is only good if it's written out of love and with no desire for attention and that the only good fanfiction is written like this is not really something I love to see perpetuated, either.
And honestly, if the fic is THAT bad, if you can't stomach the fic because "motivation shows more than you realize" then... does it really matter if they're holding onto chapters for ANY reason? If it's not a fic you want to read because their motivation wasn't pure enough for you, then you wouldn't be reading it anyway if they didn't do that, because their motivation would be the same.
And I'm adding for the record, I'm not saying you have to like it, personally. Just that it's been around much longer than you're implying, and that it doesn't have morality attached to it.
What do you mean by the contentification of fic? Just curious as to why you think it’s bad!
ok i warned you this might be a bit old man screaming at the sky but you asked i shall answer
i think this trend i have seen a lot on specifically twitter lately where people are like “will post the fic when i get x number of new followers!” or “x number of likes and I’ll drop the chapter” is an incredibly depressing indictment of how even creative spaces like fic writing are being overrun by what i feel is a capitalism driven desire to contentify and ultimately commodify your every hobby and interest (aka when people are like omg you crochet start a tiktok business but with fic)
there’s nothing wrong with promoting your fic - we all do it and we should all promo our work when it’s live - but i find it hard to stomach this new trend where people are effectively holding back their work until they hit certain follower goals or numbers of likes. it doesn’t make me feel like you’re writing for the love of it or for the love of the characters - more that you’re writing for the attention and the potential following it will give you.
and listen, there’s nothing inherently wrong with desiring attention, but this contentification of fic where it’s being used as a tool to build your online following makes me feel mega icky. promo your fic to your hearts content but if you’re going to be like will post this fic when i get 300 new followers!!! it makes me immediately distrustful of the motivations behind you writing fic. you know? you should write because you love it. not because it gets you twitter followers and you crave a cult of your own or whatever.
and my hot and controversial take is that you can tell who’s writing and posting fic because they want to gain traction on twitter (the above mentioned contentification) and those who write because they love the characters. motivation shows in your words more than you realise.

Beautiful Nightmare (Cho Sang-Woo x Fem!Reader 18+ Explicit Smut)
I finally started watching Squid Game again and DAMN, do I miss Sang-Woo. That's why I decided to post this fanfiction I wrote back then. I hope I find my muse to write more for Squid Game... and maybe other fandoms Anyways, enjoy this one!
Fandom: Squid Game Pairing: Cho Sang-Woo x Fem!Reader Rating: Adult, 18+ First time posted on AO3 on 12th October 2021 Warnings: Explicit Sex Scenes, Breeding Kink, Overstimulation Summary: After receiving the invitation for a second time, Sang-Woo decides to pay one last visit to the one he loves.
Tumblr media
“S-Shit, Sang-Woo, pl-please stop… I can’t take anymore…”
Not a complete lie, but not the complete truth either. Your lover had trouble listening to your stuttered plea as he drilled himself one last time into your sore cunt before filling you up for the third time this night. More saliva dripped out of your mouth and wet the pillow, tears formed anew, the feelings simply too much to handle. How it was possible for you to not pass out this very moment was a mystery to you, and yet you couldn’t care less about the reasons. Why even waste a second pondering about it?
You turned your head and gasped for air, hardly could do so since his grip around the nape of your neck was still unyielding. Despite all the tiredness in your bones you managed to take a short glimpse at Sang-Woo; dark eyes focused on your pretty body, smooth skin and black hair slick with sweat. He looked gorgeous in the dim light and you still couldn’t believe your luck being fucked into a delirium by this beautiful man now.
You remembered the sting in your heart when he’d suddenly announced his departure. A business trip to America, he’d said. Business trips weren’t unusual for him, but something about this one felt wrong. Soon you found out the reason behind your funny feeling. The police questioned you about his whereabouts, and when you got to know about the crimes he allegedly had commited you wondered if you’d ever see him again. Maybe he’d fled to America and left you behind. This thought indeed did cross your mind sometimes. But he wasn’t that kind of man… So… What was really going on?
The more you were surprised and happy when he stood in front of your doorstep all of a sudden tonight and started to wreck you the second you’d opened the door. The taste of alcohol and cigarettes still burned on your tongue and in this moment you wished nothing more than to have a taste again. Following your silent wish he bent over and caught your lips with his, thrusting his tongue inside your warm mouth and playing with your tongue while caressing your thighs. It happened in such gentle way that you nearly broke out in tears as it let your heart flutter in a love you’d never experienced before. His kiss, however, was completely different: demanding and animalistic, greedy and brutish.
He slid out and placed his hand on your throbbing sex, chest swelling with pride because of the sticky mess he’d caused between your soft thighs. “You need more, don’t you? I know you do.” Ignoring your whiny mewls he claimed your mouth anew and let his fingertips dance across your swollen clit. You winced and whimpered in desperation. Every touch there - no matter how little and gentle - did hurt, did burn, but fuck, did it feel good!
“P-Please..!”
“I am not done with you yet, princess,” Sang-Woo breathed hot against your mouth. Through wet eyelashes you locked eyes with him. You let out a short squeak when his hand left your neck only to find a fist full of your hair. “Not until I fucked a pretty little baby into your pretty little body.”
A baby..?!
“Honey, I-”
What you had to say didn’t seem to concern him since he cut you off with yet another harsh kiss.
“Be a good girl and let me fuck you good, huh? You want this, don’t you?”
Not waiting for an answer he flipped you over to your back again. As much as he enjoyed ramming his cock into you from behind, he now yearned to watch your face as you fall to pieces for him, BECAUSE of him. Sang-Woo knew you were close to the limit. How many orgasms did he give you this night already? Five? Six? Not enough though. Not enough at all. It probably was his last night with you. He had to make you happy one last time, simply HAD to make you carry his child. Having kids had never been a topic, but secretly he often thought about making you a mother. You had to be the mother of his children. You, no one else. And it had to be tonight.
“Fuck, you’re so pretty,” Sang-Woo growled in a whisper as he splayed your legs wide open for him. And you truly were a sight to behold with your perfect body, shimmering with sweat, your perfect perky nipples, begging to be played with, and your perfectly ruined pussy, so soppy and raw from all the abuse.
This vulnerable sight of yours put him into a frenzy. He wanted, no, he fucking NEEDED to get one more taste of your addicting juices. For fuck’s sake, he would feed on your exquisite elixier for the rest of his miserable life if he could. Sang-Woo dived down between your lovely thighs where the most delicious of all flavors was awaiting him. You screamed aloud at the sudden intrusion of his tongue. It was… too much…
You jerked around, gripped his hair, tried to free yourself somehow, but his firm grip on your hips left you no choice but obeying and giving in to his beastly appetite. Moaning and whimpering you squeezed your thighs together, made it hard for him to breathe. Sang-Woo didn’t care; a blissful death between your wonderful legs was by far better than dying with hundreds of holes in his body. He fastly blocked the violent pictures in his head. He was here with you now. You and him. No brutal reality. Only you and him. Here. Right now.
He sucked hard on your clit, made you lose all control. Now you were gripping his hair in order to keep him as close as possible, not to push him away anymore.
“Oh fuck, I am burning…! Baby…!”
Too lost in your pleasure, you missed Sang-Woo’s short, desperate chuckle. He loved you so much, it was almost ridiculous. He felt trapped in a nightmare. A nightmare he had caused all by himself. Why had he done all this shit…?! Fuck, he only wanted to give you and his mother a better life! That’s all he wanted… But instead…
He blinked back the tears in his eyes. Moments later he found himself towering you, the tip of his hard cock teasing your sodden pussy.
“You know how much I love you, y/n, don’t you?”
“Huh?”
You forced your eyes open, met loving and sad ones.
“Tell me.”
You had no idea what was going through his mind, and you didn’t ask.
“I know. And you know how much I love you, yes?”
Sang-Woo gave you the sweetest of smiles and you felt your heart burning with deep love for this man.
Without any warning he bent down to steal a violent kiss while pressing his thick cock inside your needy cunt again. You screamed into his mouth and heard him chuckle a “Too much for you, princess?”.
The way he stretched you wide open let you see stars, turned you into a trembling and whiny mess. Sang-Woo loved how he was able to pry this slutty, cockhungry side out of your usually shy personality. He loved how you could look like the most needy bitch in this whole damn universe while he was fucking out the last ounce of any moral and self-restraint of yours. He loved how you’d ask, BEG him to go deeper, to fill you up and fuck you like there was no tomorrow. Pressing your legs to your chest now he pounded into you now in a pace that made your eyes roll back and your tongue stick out.
“My pretty little slut is eager for my cum, huh?”
Unable to utter any word you just nodded. It was enough for him to thrust harder. Deeper. Faster. Until you both shook and yelled in ultimate ecstasy as he filled you up with his hot, sticky cum once more. His sweaty body collapsed on top of you, his hot breaths caressing your neck.
You wrapped your arms around him and held him close, pressed a loving kiss on his forehead.
“You’re a little dummy,” you laughed quietly.
“Huh? Why so?”
Both of you had trouble to speak properly, you still were trying to catch your breaths.
“I wanted to tell you when you’re back from your trip.”
“Tell me what?”
“That you’ll be a daddy. I got to know it shortly before you said you had to go overseas. I didn’t want to worry you, so I wanted to wait until you’re back.”
Sang-Woo’s heart was about to stand still. You were pregnant already?! For a split moment he dropped the idea of joining the games again. But if he wouldn’t go and win the money…
Fondling his hair you whispered tiredly, “You’ll the best daddy in the world. I just know it. I love you.” It didn’t need another minute until you fell into a deep and peaceful slumber.
A nightmare. Yes. It was one, Sang-Woo thought. But a beautiful one.
Careful as not to wake you up he slowly put your arms away, stood up and put his clothes on. Buttoning his shirt up he made a decision. He’d participate in these games. He’d win. No matter what. No matter how high the price. Not only for you and his mother. But for the three of you.
He’d return. He’d return and live the happy family life he’d always dreamed about having with you. This had been his dream. And this would become his reality.
For sure it would.
Yes.
For sure it would become reality...

Vegas Baby
Tumblr media
Kate Martin x reader
Summary: Kate gets drafted to the Aces, making you determine if moving to Las Vegas or staying in Iowa is the right decision.
a/n: not edited
“With the 18th pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, the Las Vegas Aces select Kate Martin, University of Iowa.”
Your eyes widened at the screen before you as your girlfriend stood up from her seat in the crowd. Your sister latched a hand onto your shoulder while her jaw dropped at those simple yet groundbreaking words. You didn’t have time to react, slapping your own hand over your mouth as you watched Kate walk up to the stage to accept her jersey. “Holy shit.”
Tears formed along your waterline and you broke out into a smile that was almost bigger than Kate’s. Your sister started shaking your shoulder. “Your girlfriend’s going to fucking Vegas!”
You remember moments before she got drafted; nonstop texts in your phone while you both supported Caitlin as she got drafted #1 overall. Kate was nervous to say the least, telling you how all she wanted was an opportunity. The chance to get her name called and to walk across that stage. It was all she had been talking about for months. There had always been a part of you that knew she was going to get drafted. You had spent the last three years at Iowa watching her, supporting her, cheering her on and all you wanted was for her to get that opportunity that she had been wishing for all season.
My love 💗
Babe, they asked me to switch seats
I’m closer to the aisle now
Idk what this means but I’m nervous
What should I do?
As a joke, you had replied “baby, you’re about to get drafted.” Then she did actually get drafted. Maybe you had a way of telling the future? Is this the universe’s way of telling you that you should ditch getting your major in business and start a career in fortune telling instead?
You continued watching the rest of the WNBA draft with your hands shaking in your lap. After your initial freak out over Kate getting drafted had occurred, you didn’t waste any time in texting in texting your girlfriend to congratulate her.
“Congratulations baby I’m so so so proud of you.”
Kate didn’t respond instantly as you had expected, but a couple of hours later, you received a phone call from her. “Oh my God, babe.”
You immediately laughed into the phone, “how is my new Ace doing?”
“I don’t even know. There’s so many thoughts going through my head right now. Did you see me?”
You could practically feel her nerves through the phone. “Of course I did. I saw every second. I’m so proud of you, Kate, this is amazing.”
“Thank you,” she said, taking a pause. “I feel really good about this, you know? Everything is falling into place and working out. Knowing that I have your support, babe, it means everything to me.”
“You know I’ll always support you no matter what. You’re going to be doing great things in Vegas, I just know it.” You couldn’t help but tear up again, forcing the tears not to fall so that Kate wouldn’t hear it.
“It’s going to be hard leaving Iowa but this is an incredible opportunity. I’ll be playing with the fucking Aces. Are you joking? The fucking Las Vegas Aces.”
“They’re getting a good one,” you smiled. “When are you coming back from New York?”
There was a few moments of silence coming from her end. Silence that stirred the smallest bit of anxiety within you. Silence that made you feel the smallest bit of uncertainty. “Within the next couple of days for sure. I have to pack up my place and get everything back home in order before I go to Vegas.”
“Right, yeah,” you agreed. There was a part of you that felt almost hurt that she didn’t mention seeing you or coming back to you. Was it stupid to feel that way?
“Hey, I gotta go,” she spoke softly into the phone. “But I’ll call you later if you’re awake. I’ll see you soon, baby. I love you.”
“I love you too.” Seconds after, Kate hung up the phone, leaving you sitting in your shared apartment that she would soon leave behind. You just hope you wouldn’t be part of that. She couldn’t leave you behind right?
Kate was back in Iowa, curled up with you on the couch two days after the draft. When you had picked her up from the airport, you had barely left her side. Not because of your previous fears from draft night, but because even though she was only gone for a few days, you missed her terribly. You lifted your head up from her chest, looking up at her. “When do you leave for Vegas?” you ask her.
Kate looks down at you, softly kissing your temple. “In a couple weeks for training camp. Why?”
You shrug your shoulders. “Just wondering.” You debated on continuing the conversation, having so many questions in your head about the future of your relationship. Deciding against keeping quiet, you continue, “we should talk about some stuff, Kate.”
Kate shifted from beneath you and leaned up more against the couch. Her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at you, not pulling her hand away from your waist. “What’s wrong?”
“We should talk about you moving to Vegas.” You take in her expression, watching as her eyes darted from your eyes to around your face. Before the draft, you and Kate had always speculated what your lives together would look like after college. You both had discussed that if she chose to continue her basketball career professionally, you would find a way to go with her, leaving your life behind in Iowa. The more you thought about it, the harder it would be to leave your friends, family, and your school.
Kate nodded, “yeah, we should probably talk about where we’re staying. I mean, we’re going to have to pack and everything but it shouldn’t be too hard.”
That’s when it hit you. Kate was planning on you moving to Las Vegas with her. And in a way, it felt like you were stuck, torn between wanting to be with Kate but not wanting to leave your life and everything you had worked for, behind.
“Kate, baby there’s a lot more that goes into this than just me and you moving across the country. I just started a new job and all of my friends and family are here.”
“Are you saying you don’t want to come with me?” Kate asked you, looking almost insulted at the idea.
You shook your head. “No, no that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that we need to talk more about it and figure it out from there. I can’t just tell you I’m moving with you when there’s so many things that tie me down here.”
Kate’s grip on your waist loosened slightly. Slightly enough to have you notice it. “It’s either you want to move or you don’t. It shouldn’t be this difficult.”
You were taken back by her response, acknowledging the tension in her words. “Having to reroute my entire life in a matter of a couple weeks would never be fucking easy.”
“What about all the times we would be in my bed and we would talk about being together?” Kate finally let her hands fall from your waist. “You said you’d follow me wherever if I got drafted.”
“Kate, that was us dreaming. In a perfect world, yes, I would follow you wherever you wanted to go even if it were the pits of hell. But this is not a perfect world, and we have to look at the reality of this situation.”
“So then why say all of that shit?” Kate’s voice raised slightly which caused you to move back on the couch, putting space between you two. “So all of that shit is meaningless then?”
You widen your eyes. “No of course not because I meant it when I said that I wanted to be with you for the rest of my life. You’re not listening to me.”
Kate rolled her eyes, standing up from the couch for the first time since the conversation started. “You always fucking do this, Y/n.”
“Do what?”
“Say that I’m not listening to you when it’s the only thing I’m doing. Do you think that this whole situation isn’t hard on me too? Two weeks ago, I thought my basketball career was over and now I have the chance to play in a league with some of the most talented athletes in the world. Do you not see how big of a deal this is and how I want your support in this?” Kate was walking back in forth in front of you, her tone of voice catching you off guard.
You stood up, trying to get her to look at you. “That’s fucking ridiculous that you would even suggest that I don’t support you, Kate. I have been your biggest fan since I met you and you want to tell me that I’m not supporting you? Why should I have to prove my support by moving across the country and beginning a life that I am not familiar with. You’re making me sound selfish.”
“It wouldn’t be unfamiliar because you’ll have me.”
“And what would happen when I don’t have you anymore?”
Kate froze in her spot, turning to face you. “What?”
“What would happen when you decide that I’m tying you down or becoming too much. Leaving my whole life here, it’s just not worth the risk.”
“That’s fucking bullshit and you know it,” Kate yelled, looking down at you. “Do you think that if I was going to break up with you, I’d want you to move to Vegas with me? And do you really think I could be capable of doing something like that when you’re the only person I can see going through this next chapter with?”
You throw your hands up in the air, trying desperately to reason with her. “Do you care at all what happens to me? Do you care that I’m giving up so much for you?”
Kate was practically pulling at her hair at this point. She rolled up the sleeves of her hoodie before she brushed her hands over her face. “You’re acting like I’m making you move to a different country. Obviously, you have the fucking choice to stay here if you want. I’m not going to force to move to Vegas with me,” she paused. “I assumed you were going to, considering that’s what you have been telling me for months. If you knew you were going to stay here, why would you give me that false hope?”
“Because I thought that up until now, I wouldn’t question leaving with you. But now that it’s actually happening, I have to think about the reality and it scares me.”
Kate tightens her mouth into a small line, making you know that what you just said went straight to her heart. “So it’s not enough knowing that I would take care of you? I wouldn’t just drop you off in Vegas and leave you there you know. I don’t see a future where I’m not taking care of you and putting you first.”
You cross your arms. Everything in you wanted to believe Kate, but you’ve heard the horror stories of what would happen to girls who dated professional athletes. Maybe you shouldn’t have let this go on for this long. Maybe you should have listened to your head instead of your heart. “Do you really believe that?”
“Believe what?”
“That you’d put me first?”
Kate’s jaw almost dropped at your question and in that moment, you wanted to take it back. “This is bullshit.”
Without saying anything else, she slips on her shoes, grabbing her keys, and heads for the door.
You wanted to reach out to her. To tell her to stay and talk it out, but deep down you knew that there was only a matter of time before the magnetic pull between you two came crashing down.

So many of these comments on this post did not pass the vibe check so I wanted to add:
I am 30 and trans. (Genderfluid leans masc heavily)
I only have vague memories of the first 27 years of my life because I was so absolutely fucking horribly miserable every day of my life that my brain literally forgot it. Everything was a misery I was simply surviving.
A huge amount of being that miserable was not knowing I was trans. No joke.
And the MAIN REASON I didn't know I was trans was because my parents made it very clear from when I was a young child that they hated trans people and considered them gross and wrong and a sin against god. Very much not a 'letting your child express themself and listening respectfully' sort of environment. So I never allowed myself to even consider it as a possibility until I was outside of my parents influence. Because it wouldn't have been safe. My brain wouldn't even let me think about it.
Well all things considered how can I be so sure it was the lack of trans support making me miserable and not something else? Glad you asked. Here are some fun facts about me as a kid/teen.
I remember when I was really little and my parents stopped letting me run around without a shit on outside. And I was so confused and upset. Because my brother and my dad got to play outside without a shirt. Why not me? I didn't understand and was annoyed.
I always tried to act like one of the guys at school: climbing trees and roughhousing with people much more than anyone else. Tbh I was a bit too violent because I clearly didn't fit in and was overcompensating.
I used to be fascinated by the one or two trans kids at my school. I would watch them anytime they were around me and emotionally I ached. And I could never figure out why. And then I would have to pretend I hated them because my parents taught me I had to.
I used to watch YouTube videos of people who had top surgery and their experience with it. I would watch late at night when no one was awake and be captivated for hours. And then I would look up pictures of what people looked like after top surgery. And at that time it was much harder to find resources or images for. So I would look for hours. And then I would feel so upset afterwards and not know why. And I would pretend I didn't watch/see any of it because I felt so hurt and confused by my fascination with a topic that was supposed to be taboo.
Sometimes I would be spending time with adults and someone would share news that someone we knew had breast cancer or endometriosis. And I would feel JEALOUS. I would feel a deep jealousy. I would consider them lucky, while other people would mourn and cry over the need for necessary surgery such as mastectomies or hysterectomies. I would wish that were me. And then I would feel like a horrible awful shit person for thinking that. Because what the fuck right?
Do you want to know what it took to make me realize I was trans?
I had just disconnected from my parents and an abusive ex. It was the first time in my life I ever felt safe. The first time I was ever in a position to not be judged in 27 years of living.
And my trans friend was talking to their drunk coworker about them being nonbinary. And the drunk guy turned to me unceremoniously and said 'are you nonbinary too? Is that you as well?'
And I was literally stunned because no one had literally EVERY IN MY LIFE asked me about my gender before. And I gave the most awkward delayed stuttering reply of 'n-no. I'm a female.' It was not fucking convincing AT ALL to anyone present. Except for maybe the drunk guy who forgot he even asked the question by the time I replied. And I literally couldn't stop thinking about it. I thought about that until I literally realized I was trans.
That's it. That's all it took. Was me being in a nonjudgmental environment and for one single person to ask me my gender.
Having any freedom to explore my gender as a kid in a safe way with any amount of support from my family would have been fucking LIFE CHANGING. All the nonsurgical care approaches mentioned above would have been LIFE CHANGING for me as a child.
I still would have fumbled around for a bit trying to figure out what exactly was the right label. (Which I did as an adult anyways while feeling incredibly self conscious lol) But I would have come to the exact same conclusion years sooner with just any amount of support. And honestly it would have been less likely I made any permanent changes I regretted.
Being a full adult who had already gone through a puberty that didn't work for me made everything so much harder. All my decisions felt more pressured and more hectic because I was so desperate to lessen my dysphoria. My body was so mentally distressing to me that even while being very careful to make my decisions with the help of my therapist and my doctor it was still hard to tell what I was doing because it was what I wanted and what I was doing to just try anything to try to fix the dysphoria. (It worked out I'm good and happy with everything I decided to do.)
If I was transitioning as a kid I could have just paused puberty with blockers and then taken the time I needed to figure things out in a social setting without as much stress and crushing dysphoria from my physical body and being worried I needed to do everything right away or it was too late.
Gender affirming care is life changing care for trans people, especially kids. At all levels. The social support, the puberty blockers, the hormones, and even the surgeries. It saves lives. It keeps kids alive. We can skip whole arcs of trauma for these kids by just listening to them and respecting them and letting them figure it out. Please please please protect trans kids and their healthcare.
is it okay for a minor to go through and consent to life changing surgeries?
especially when they cannot drive, vote, get a tattoo, you think a minor has the ability to think through such a decision?

The diner had a nostalgic feel to it, even though you were too young to be nostalgic for anything there. The neon lights reflected off the chrome counter, the jukebox played an upbeat melody in the background, and the smell of greasy fries and burgers lingered in the air. It was the kind of place that suited him—half retro, half chaotic, a space that seemed to exist outside of time.
Peter sat across from you, silver hair catching the colorful glow, a crooked smile playing on his lips. His silver jacket, an essential piece, gleamed under the fluorescent lights. He was leaning on his forearms, watching you with an expression that made it clear that, if it were up to him, he’d spend his whole life just looking at you.
“You know I’m not supposed to be here,” he murmured, but with no real intention of leaving.
You raised an eyebrow, bringing the straw of your milkshake to your lips. “Peter, you always say that.”
He grinned, and his dimples appeared instantly. “And I’m always right.”
You rolled your eyes, but you couldn’t stop the warmth that spread through your chest at the sight of him, all soft and melted for you. He wasn’t anything you ever expected to find in life, but somehow, he was everything you wanted.
And then came the first glance.
The one you felt on your skin before you even realized what was happening.
A woman at the table next to you pulled her son closer, as if Peter were some kind of creature ready to attack him. A couple in the booth across whispered something to each other, eyes fixed on him with a mix of disdain and distrust. The waiter, who had seemed friendly until now, hesitated for a second before setting the plates down unceremoniously, as if touching them was enough to get contaminated.
Peter said nothing.
You knew he noticed. He always did.
But instead of reacting, he just drummed his fingers against the tabletop, looking away. His jaw was tight, shoulders a little more tense.
Hate.
People had so much hate.
“Do you want to get out of here?” you asked, your blood boiling.
He finally looked at you. And God, those dark eyes were a damn downfall. There was still a trace of a smile on his face, but it was different now—one you recognized.
The smile that said “it’s fine” when it really wasn’t.
“No.” He picked up a fry, twirling it between his fingers before popping it into his mouth. “If I left every place where I wasn’t welcome, there wouldn’t be much left, huh?”
Your chest tightened. He said it like it was a joke. Like it didn’t hurt. Like he was used to it.
And maybe he was.
But you weren’t.
You let go of your straw, crossing your arms over the table. “If anyone says anything, I—”
Peter let out a quiet laugh, leaning back against the seat. “You’re gonna defend me?”
“Obviously.”
He tilted his head to the side, silver hair falling over his forehead. His eyes glimmered, and a real smile returned.
“You’re perfect, you know that?”
This time, you were the one to look away, feeling your cheeks burn.
But the discomfort around you was still there, pulsing like a second skin.
Peter played it off well.
So well you almost believed he really didn’t care. That the stares didn’t get to him, that the whispers didn’t burn under his skin. But you knew Peter Maximoff. And Peter Maximoff was many things—fast, chaotic, ridiculously charming—but he wasn’t unbreakable.
You saw it in his eyes.
You saw it in the way his smile started to fade, in the way his fingers traced distracted patterns on the table, never stopping. You saw it in the way he got quieter, like he was disappearing into himself.
And you saw the exact moment he started to think he shouldn’t be here.
Not just in this diner.
With you.
He dropped his gaze to the table, idly playing with the cold fries on his plate. “Hey…” he murmured, without that usual easy, teasing tone. “Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you were with someone else?”
Your heart stumbled.
“What?”
He forced a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m not saying you should, it’s just that… I think about it. A lot.”
You felt a lump in your throat.
“Peter.”
He looked away.
“I mean it. Look at you.” He gestured in the air, like he was presenting you to an invisible audience. “Beautiful, smart, cool as hell—it’s ridiculous. You could be with anyone. Any normal guy.”
“Normal,” you repeated, feeling something simmer beneath your skin.
He let out a quiet laugh, but it was empty.
“I’m a failure, you know that? I have nothing. Still live in my mom’s basement. I steal stupid shit because, I don’t know, my brain doesn’t know how to work any other way. I’m weird. And, to top it all off, I’m not even really human.” He looked down at his hands, long and nimble fingers, as if they carried something dirty, something that couldn’t be fixed. “And you… you’re everything.”
You clenched your fists on the table.
No.
No, you weren’t going to accept that.
“Peter, look at me.”
He hesitated, but obeyed.
“You’re not doing this.” Your voice was firm. “You’re not pushing me away with this bullshit speech.”
He opened his mouth, but you were faster.
“You are not a mistake, Peter. You are not a burden. You are not—” your voice faltered for a second, but you held his gaze, reaching out to take his hand, feeling his long, nimble fingers hesitate before intertwining with yours. “—a monster.”
His eyes widened, like you had just hit him square in the chest. Like he had never even considered the possibility of someone saying that out loud. He didn’t blink, didn’t breathe, just stared at you, dark eyes filled with something between shock and desperation, like he was trying to understand how the hell you could see all the good in him when he saw nothing at all.
You leaned over the table, completely ignoring the murmur around you, the strangers’ presence trying to creep into the night that belonged to the two of you. Your fingers traced the pulse at his wrist, following the line of a vein that was beating too fast, as fast as his erratic heartbeat. His face was close now, so close you could count his silver lashes, see the reflection of the diner’s neon sign dancing across his dark eyes, hear the way his breath hitched when you squeezed his hand tighter.
“You’re mine,” you murmured, each word sinking into his skin like a promise. “And I’m yours.”
His throat bobbed.
“Did you hear me, Peter?”
He blinked, dazed, like he was processing it slowly, like the idea of belonging to someone—of someone wanting to belong to him—was too distant, too impossible to be real.
So you did something that left no room for doubt.
You leaned in and kissed him.
His lips were cold from the milkshake, but his mouth gave in immediately, warm and intense and tasting like something he never, never believed he deserved. His body tensed for a second, like he was about to run, but then his hand squeezed yours tighter, and he leaned in for more, like he was trying to memorize every detail of the feeling before someone could take it away from him.
But then, the voice came.
Sharp, filled with disgust.
“You mutants never know your place.”
The world froze.
You pulled away slowly, feeling Peter’s skin stiffen under your touch, feeling his fingers turn cold around yours.
The voice came again, this time even more venomous.
“People like you aren’t welcome here.”
You turned around.
The man was big, broad shoulders, disheveled hair, his eyes carrying a very specific kind of rage. A rage that didn’t come from anything concrete, nothing he could truly explain. Just pure hatred for something he didn’t understand.
Peter didn’t say anything. He just stared, an eerily serene expression on his face.
His silence only seemed to make the man angrier.
He let out a low, sarcastic laugh, leaning over the table with a dirty smirk. “Look at you. You know you’re a freak, right, kid?”
Your blood boiled.
You didn’t care about the stares, didn’t care about the whispers or the way people seemed to subtly move away from your table, like Peter was a threat, like he was something to be feared. You knew he had dealt with this for years. You knew the words rolled off him like water, that he was too fast to care, that the best response was always a joke.
But not now.
Not when some disgusting man thought he could open his mouth and spew all that hatred like he had any right to.
You felt your chest rise and fall too fast, felt your fist clench at your side, ready to say something, do something—but then you felt it.
His hand. His long fingers slid over your wrist, a steady grip, a silent squeeze that said “no.” Peter held your hand.
And then the man turned to you. And smiled. A filthy, disgusting smile, all yellowed teeth and rotten intentions.
“Bet you’ve never been with a real man. I could show you a good time, girl.”
Peter’s hand slipped away from yours.
It was immediate.
You felt it before you even realized. The air shifted, thick with electricity, like the second before lightning splits the sky.
When you looked at Peter, he still seemed calm. But it was the dangerous kind of calm.
His mouth was still relaxed, his shoulders still loose, but his eyes—God, his eyes—held no amusement now. They were fixed on the man before him, burning like embers, scanning every inch of him like he was deciding the best way to take him apart.
And then Peter smiled. A lazy, lopsided grin, a glimmer of mockery dancing behind the threat.
“Wow.” Peter whistled. “Did you rehearse that in the mirror, or did it just come out like that?”
The man’s face darkened. Peter grinned.
“Because if it just came out like that, congrats. You’re a natural asshole.”
And then, in the blink of an eye, he was gone. Just one second. Just a silver blur.
The man didn’t even have time to react. One moment he was standing—and the next, he was on his knees.
The entire diner went still. Glasses rattled on the tables. The air was split by the sharp sound of impact.
No one saw Peter move.
The only thing left was him, standing in front of the man now kneeling on the floor, fingers delicately gripping the collar of his worn-out jacket, like he had placed him there as easily as setting down a cup.
Peter’s eyes glowed under the diner’s red neon lights, the shadow of a smirk twisting his mouth.
“Let me tell you a secret.” His voice came low, slow. “If you open that filthy mouth again, I’ll make you swallow every word.”
The man froze.
Peter’s smirk widened.
“And trust me,” he slid a finger over the guy’s shoulder as if brushing off dust, “I’m very fast.”
The man tried to move.
Another silver blur.
And suddenly, the guy was sitting on the counter, feet dangling in the air, not even knowing how the hell he got there.
The entire diner gasped.
Peter clicked his tongue, resting an elbow on the counter, relaxed, as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening.
“Need a map, buddy? You look lost.”
The man blinked. His hands pressed against the counter, as if trying to find balance, as if trying to understand.
Peter just smiled, and before the guy could open his mouth, he tilted his face, lowering his voice to something more intimate, almost confidential.
“Let me guess.” He rested his chin on his hand, eyes lit with a cold amusement. “You’re not feeling so brave anymore, are you?”
He snapped his fingers. Another silver blur, and the man was back on the floor.
His breath came fast, erratic.
This time, he didn’t try to speak.
Peter smiled, as if finally satisfied.
You threw a few bills onto the table, not counting, not looking, just leaving them there, as if money had any significance in the middle of that mess, as if it could pay for the man’s discomfort, for the disgusting words he had pretended didn’t affect him.
And then you turned.
He was already waiting for you. His face still slightly tilted, eyebrows raised in a mix of impatience and expectation, as if silently asking if you could finally leave.
You nodded.
And in the blink of an eye, the world disappeared.
Your stomach flipped, and your heart jumped to your throat. It was like being pulled by an invisible force, a train too fast to follow, to process—cold air cut against your skin, sounds blurred into the distance, and then, suddenly, everything stopped.
Your feet touched solid ground. The world stopped spinning.
But your body didn’t know that yet.
You blinked a few times, trying to adjust your vision.
The sky was dark, speckled with stars, the moon casting its silver glow over everything around you. The grass beneath your feet swayed gently with the wind. You were alone, no artificial lights, no whispering voices, no disgusted stares burning against his skin.
Just the two of you.
Just him.
Just Peter, now looking at you with raw concern in his eyes, eyebrows furrowed, lips slightly parted, as if he wanted to say something but didn’t know where to start.
“Hey.” His fingers touched your face with impossible gentleness, pushing strands of hair away from your skin, thumbs brushing slowly over your cheekbones, as if searching for something. “You okay?”
Your breath was still uneven, the adrenaline from what had happened at the diner, from the impossible journey to this place, still rushing through your veins like a reminder of how fast he was.
But he was here. Dark eyes, watchful. Fingers still on your face. His concern hung in the air, dense, almost tangible.
You closed your eyes for a second, inhaling slowly. “Just… a little dizzy.”
Relief flickered across his face. He let his hands slide down your arms, from your shoulders to your elbows, a warm, steady touch, like he was grounding you here, with him. Then he stopped—his gaze shifted.
You felt it before realizing what it was. The wind blew, sharp against your exposed skin, and before you could react, you felt something warm and soft drape over your shoulders.
His jacket.
The silver fabric still held his body heat, still smelled like him.
Peter adjusted it around you, his fingers lingering on your collarbones for a second longer than necessary before pulling away.
The silence between you was different now. Heavy. Charged. You looked at him, and he looked away.
His eyes didn’t meet yours. His jaw was clenched, shoulders tense, fingers idly playing with the zipper of his hoodie—a nervous habit you knew all too well.
Peter was never one to keep things to himself. He filled every silence with fast words and unfiltered jokes.
But now, he was quiet.
And that said more than anything he could have said.
You took a step forward, feeling the jacket move with you, his scent wrapping around you.
He noticed the movement but didn’t move.
Your fingers touched the side of his face, guiding him to look at you.
And he did.
His eyes were dark, deep, filled with something he was trying to hide, but that overflowed anyway.
You knew that look.
It was the look he had when he saw the prejudice he had faced since childhood spill onto you. It was the look of someone blaming himself for something that wasn’t his fault.
You sighed, your fingers tracing the strong line of his jaw, moving up into his silver hair, threading through the soft strands. He closed his eyes for a second.
Rested his forehead against yours.
Sighed.
“I hate this.”
His voice was low, restrained.
You didn’t ask what.
You already knew the answer.
He hated that you had to hear that kind of thing.
Hated that your name had been spat from the mouth of a disgusting asshole.
Hated that you had been dragged into it.
He hated that the world didn’t accept who he was.
And he hated even more that it hurt you.
You held his face more firmly, forcing him to look at you again.
"I love you."
His eyes shone.
You traced your fingers along the sharp line of his jaw, the space between his cheek and that ever-present dimple, the corner of his mouth—mapping him with care, as if reaffirming something he should never doubt.
"I don’t care what they think. I don’t care what they say."
You leaned in closer, and he stayed still, like he was absorbing every word, like he needed to hear them.
"You’re mine, remember?"
Peter swallowed hard.
A muscle jumped in his throat.
His chest rose and fell in a slower rhythm, his breathing heavy.
And then, he moved. His fingers found your face with urgency, his mouth pressing against yours without hesitation.
The kiss was slow, deep. Filled with everything he didn’t know how to say. His hands slid to your waist, pulling you in, holding you like he needed to feel that you were there, real, whole.
When he pulled back, just enough to breathe, his eyes were softer.
The weight on his shoulders seemed a little lighter.
He nudged his nose against yours, a small smile dancing at the corner of his lips.
"I’m yours, huh?"
You smiled back.
And when you answered, your voice was absolute certainty.
"Yes."
Peter smiled.
That smile. The one that was just yours. The one that made his dimples appear, that made his eyes crinkle slightly at the corners, that left him looking hopelessly in love. The one you would never get tired of seeing.
He kissed your forehead, slow, his lips lingering a little longer than necessary before pulling away.
And then he laced his fingers through yours, holding your hand firmly, like he knew that even without words, that touch said everything he wanted to say.
And somehow, you knew exactly what it was.
Peter didn’t like the world.
But he liked you.
He liked you a lot.

This is all so true. My husband and I have been together for 16 years and have been through all kinds of shit, including family deaths, layoffs, majorb depression, and having 2 small kids, and here's my 2 cents:
Communication is absolutely a bare minimum necessity. Being able to talk about problems when they're small stops them from becoming huge, insurmountable problems. Now that we have 2 little kids who take up a ton of time and energy, we have scheduled a weekly time to just talk about us. Is there anything that's bothering us? Is there some aspect of our relationship that we want to grow? Is someone feeling hurt or insecure or lonely? How can we fix that? Sometimes it's little stuff like hey it seems like you've started interrupting me when I'm playing video games with my sister (are you feeling neglected? Did you not notice you're doing it? Are you struggling to find something to do by yourself?). Sometimes it's big stuff like hey I feel like my job is killing me and I want to quit but I have no idea what I want to do and I'm scared. Also, it's not for everyone, but for us, it's helpful to have heavy conversations snuggled up on the couch. It feels safer (your mileage may vary, obviously).
It was mentioned above, but it it definitely requires both people. There is no amount of effort 1 person can put in that will make up for the other person putting no effort in.
I know a lot of us have a lot of trauma, but even when it's your instinctive gut reaction to think that your partner said/did something specifically to hurt you, try to take a step back before reacting. If your partner loves you and generally wants good things for you (this is NOT about abusive relationships), try to give them the benefit of the doubt. Did they mean to say something hurtful or did they just not realize it could be heard that way?
Try to approach things as the 2 of you vs the problem instead of you vs your partner. It will help the 2 of you feel more like a team, and it's a lot easier to actually resolve whatever it is when you're not feeling like you have to defend yourself.
Remember that relationships are never exactly 50/50 all the time. Sometimes one partner needs more support (emotionally or physically). It's not about keeping score, it's about asking yourselves "do I feel supported when I need it?" And "do I offer support when I can?" There's a line I love from Dorian on Critical Role: there's no debts between us.
tbh, I think that relationship success is more about consistent work than hard work. It's about both of you putting in the effort into both your relationship and yourselves (yeah. Working on your own shit sucks but it definitely makes a huge difference). That doesn't mean you can't have a good relationship if your have trauma or mental health problems or you're neurodivergent. But it does mean that if you're making no effort to improve (identifying your own triggers, learning new coping mechanisms, finding ways to manage your emotions in a non-destructive way), you're going to have a harder time building a solid relationship.
Also, just in case no one has told you this recently: you are lovable. You deserve love. You're not a burden. Loving you is not a burden. Loving you is not work, even if relationships are ❤️❤️❤️

Some salt about Lucanis again, don't mind me, apparently it's my second favorite topic now, right after how much I liked what was there.
Honestly explaining Lucanis's lackluster romance with demisexuality rather than plain and honest underdevelopment makes it even worse, because when does he even develop any sort of connection with Rook on screen if you happen to want to switch the party around sometimes, don't constantly take him with you everywhere and don't use the power of ✨ imagination ✨ to fill the gaps? During one and only coffee scene? Does being demi entail ignoring the person expressing even platonic interest in you, then flirting with someone else in hopes they go away? Do you just go from 0 to 100 when it suddenly clicks that you like someone the way Lucanis seemingly does in his romance, because his relationship with Rook or lack thereof is never mentioned? Does "developing an emotional connection" translates to "You do favours for the person and solve their problems until they cave in and open up to you"? What trauma are we talking about if it's addressed in one (1) quest with a Fade sequence like 30 to 40 hours into the game without being talked about previously?
Just say "We fucked it up and it doesn't have enough content", man.

@mischievouslittlecreature urghh, Mosley gave me the ick so much in this chapter 🤢.
I don't know what it is, but every time you write about that slimeball I want to throw up 😬. I'll put it down to your amazing writing because, truly, he's mannerisms and predatory movements have me as scared of him as Lucy and Tommy.
Ada spoke up, explaining that she had advised Tommy not to meet with him, and Mosley’s attention turned directly onto her. Lucy was impressed at the way Ada met his dark, empty gaze without so much as blinking. But this 👆🏼!! Arghh I love Ada. She couldn't have given two shits about this bastard in that moment. I love how you depicted her a strong, fearless woman that wasn't gonna back down to his creepiness. Him brushing off her presence was so obvious. A part of me likes to think that he was not only annoyed with her being there but intimidated by her attitude towards him 👌🏼.
“I’m talking about an empty chair, Ada,” Tommy’s voice was barely above a whisper. “My chair. My throne. People think that I’m gonna fall. They start behaving in a different way around you.” 👀, his paranoia is really starting to kick in. Ada sensed it, and so did Lucy. If anything he's starting to crack. And I think that thought alone scares Lucy.
The click of heels on the floor was his only warning to another figure approaching before Lizzie rounded the corner. Her head was held high, dress swishing around her ankles, hair styled meticulously in dark waves around her face. She did not smile when she saw him. The sound of a tantrum approaching 😬. I'm so dumb 🤦🏼‍♀️. Why did I think she would have cooled off after this time apart?? But no, in true Lizzie fashion she kicks up the moment she's confronted about her nasty remarks and behaviour.
Where's the closest brick wall?? I need to slam my head against it! I just don't get this woman 😭. She shows an ounce of guilt about Lucy hearing her vapid opinions and then she backtracks and says ...Her jaw clenched, chin raising. “Because it’s the truth, that’s why. Everybody despises her, Tommy. You don’t hear how they talk about her when they know you’re not listening. She’s nothing but your whore. Your mistress–” 🤦🏼‍♀️. What the actual fuck is wrong with her?
“She’s fucking my husband!” Lizzie burst out. “She’s fucking my husband when she knows I’m not alright with it. You may have decided that she can do no wrong, but that doesn’t change the fact that she has chosen, over and over, for years, to hurt me by staying with you. I feel like I repeat myself in every reblog, but I can't help it at this point. She's becoming unbearable. When will she understand that she came second?! Lucy never took him from her...she was never his from the start...arghhhhhh 😡😤! Ok forget slamming my head into a brick wall, maybe I should slam Lizzie's into one until some sense gets knocked into her head.
The analogy about the scab was an incredible way of describing how Lizzie feels and for a brief (very brief) second, I had enough insight to understand how she's got herself into feeling the way she does all the time. And we've seen this cycle repeatedly through each chapter, a cycle she's clearly aware of herself. For her own sake, I hope that scab does heal. But I do understand that these kinda emotions take a very long time to get over. She's gotten her own feelings about Tommy so muddled up that she's got herself into a bit of a never ending pattern. She likes the idea of Tommy but I don't think she'd every be able to deal with him the way Lucy can in the long run if Lucy wasn't there. It's just not compatible with the life she wants.
“Just play your bloody turn, Lucy.” 👀. Probably the most tense chess match anybody could witness 😂. You could tell Lucy was dragging it out so she could try and get Lizzie to open up and understand, but she weren't having any of it. It's like beating a dead horse. Nothing will ever come of it with Lizzie. She just needs to leave.
Fantastic chapter Lily! And also, congratulations of finishing this masterpiece 😍! I haven't been on here much lately, but I saw from another moots asks that you've finished the entire series 😱. You're truly incredible, and so talented! Well done, hun ❤️😘!

Chapter 5: The Thread is Ripping
“Which one is Mosley?”
Lucy and Ada were sitting in the observation booth, overlooking the MP’s benches. Craning her head to peer down at the men, Lucy gestured with her cigarette towards where Mosley sat, his head cocked as he listened to Tommy speak.
“That one.”
Ada leaned forward, arms resting on the banister, eyes fixing on Mosley with a keen level of scrutiny in them that reminded Lucy and awful lot of how Tommy looked at someone when he was first sizing them up.
Bringing her cigarette back to her lips, Lucy turned her attention back to Tommy, allowing herself a moment to just enjoy watching him speak.
“I’m really not sure about going ahead with this meeting, Lucy,” Ada told her as they went to meet Tommy out in the hall after the speakers were done.
“I know. But Tommy wants to hear what he has to say.”
“As if a man like that could have anything good to say.”
“All the more reason to hear it, then.”
“You can’t possibly be alright with Tommy considering working with him.”
“It’s just drinks, Ada. And he’s not considering anything with Mosley yet.”
Ada’s voice lowered, eyes shifting around to make sure no one was listening. “So what is he doing, then? Because I know my brother, and as bloody infuriating as he can be sometimes, I don’t believe that he actually agrees with any of Mosley’s more recent policies.”
A group of men dressed in fine, pressed suits walked past them. Lucy eyes them warily, waiting until they had passed before speaking.
“Burying our heads in the sand when it comes to Mosley and the growing movement behind him isn’t going to help anyone. Better to get to know if he and this new party he’s supposedly forming are an actual threat or not.”
“So you can deal with it now?”
Lucy wetted her lips. “Better to kill it while it’s young than when it’s grown formidable and strong.”
She could feel Ada still watching her while she broke their gaze to look around for Tommy.
“Why did he even ask me here?”
Lucy looked back at her, weighed in her mind if it was worth telling her or not, and decided that it was. “Because Mosley scares him.”
Shocked silence met her at that. There was a shift in Ada, as she finally started to understand what they were dealing with. “Does he scare you?”
“Yes.” She finally heard Tommy’s telltale heavy footfalls coming up behind them, turning to find him approaching hastily.
“Sorry, got cornered by a few people. Had to make small talk. Shall we?” He gestured down the hall.
“Tommy, you made me your political advisor,” Ada said as they walked. “And as your political advisor, it is my official advice that you don’t meet with Mr. Mosley.”
“Yes, I know.”
They made their way into a dimly lit, crowded lounge, embellished by leather seats and chairs, each circular table adorned with a small red-shaded lamp. MPs and other political figures were gathered at tables or milling about, the lounge with its bar a common place for them to gather to discuss business or other dealings.
Mosley was already seated at a table when they arrived, a newspaper held up to his face. He lowered it at the sound of their approaching footsteps, face breaking into a beaming smile that did nothing to hide the deadness of his eyes as he stood to greet them and shake Tommy’s hand.
“And Miss. Winters, of course, wonderful to see you again.”
She forced herself to shake his hand, skin crawling the entire time that their palms made contact. His leering gaze was respitefully pulled quickly away from her as his attention shifted towards Ada as Tommy introduced them.
She tried to hide how she inched a little closer to Tommy before they sat down.
From an outside perspective, it may have looked like the meeting went smoothly. But as Mosley continued to speak, Lucy felt her sense of unnerving grow.
“You know, I was rather hoping we might have this meeting alone,” Mosley said, eyes never leaving Tommy’s.
“Lucy accompanies me to most of my meetings, Mr. Mosley, and my sister is my political advisor,” Tommy explained.
Ada spoke up, explaining that she had advised Tommy not to meet with him, and Mosley’s attention turned directly onto her. Lucy was impressed at the way Ada met his dark, empty gaze without so much as blinking. When he brought his hand down with a crash onto the table, shouting in demand that the whiskey they’d ordered only a few short minutes ago be brought out now, his gaze remained fixed pointedly on Ada. A clear telegraphing of his disapproval of her presence. An attempt at intimidation. At frightening her.
If Ada was at all frightened by the display, she did a marvelous job hiding it. The corner of her lips turned up on one side, and she shot Lucy a look of mild amusement at the childish behavior from across the table.
Can you believe that shit, Luce? her eyes seemed to say. Lucy managed a smirk back at her, reaching into her pocket for her cigarettes. Mosley’s gaze was turned back fully onto Tommy, but not for one second did Lucy think that he hadn’t taken note of the quiet exchange between her and Ada.
Good. Better for him to know that they thought him ridiculous rather than that they were scared of him.
He dodged making any direct confirmations that facism was where he was moving towards politically. Instead, he gracefully turned the conversation towards, of all things, Ireland.
Lucy took a considerable gulp from her whiskey, eyes darting towards Tommy. His face remained schooled into an expression that gave away nothing, but she could tell that he was thinking of the same thing that she was:
That voice, on the other end of the telephone line. An Irish accent, explaining how there were men in Belfast who wanted him dead. Men who Michael had been allegedly cutting deals with.
Landmines, in their own fucking garden. But who was the gardener? Who planted them? It couldn’t be Michael, he had still been on a ship or in Belfast when they were placed. So who was it, then? The men from Belfast, or someone else?
And what the fuck did Mosley know about it, if anything? Was it just a coincidence, that he brought up Ireland now, of all times? Or was it an indication of something else?
Enemies. Enemies in every fucking direction that they turned. Her skin prickled with that feeling of approaching, looming danger. Drawing nearer and nearer with every breath.
She couldn’t say that she wasn’t relieved when Ada promptly stood, announcing that she was ready to leave.
Mosley ignored her. “We’re looking for someone to begin a dialogue with certain elements in Belfast with whom we don’t officially have any dealings.”
Lucy raised an eyebrow. She couldn’t help but find it a little funny how confident Mosley was that Tommy would be in any way supportive of his ideologies. And yet here he was, inviting him into his organization without seemingly even the slightest worry that Tommy would be opposed.
It was often that she forgot that other people did not know Tommy like she did.
Mosley did not seem dissuaded by Tommy’s gentle refusal of the offer. “It would involve a promotion.”
“Birmingham is my concern,” Tommy rose from his seat. Lucy mirrored him. “Ireland bores me.”
She and Ada couldn’t help but share a tiny smile at that. Tommy thanked Mosley for the whiskey, and led the way towards the exit. When she looked back while trailing behind him, it was to see Mosley watching them leave, a smirk pulling at one side of his lips. She turned her head sharply to face forward once more.
“What the fuck was that about?” Ada asked once they were in an almost deserted hallway, a good distance away from Mosley and the lounge.
“Ireland. It’s been Ireland’s day all fucking day long,” was all Tommy said in response, sidestepping her attempts to garner any more information on that subject. Instead, he started instructing her to go home and call her contacts from her time in Boston to ask about Michael. They drew aside, Tommy pacing back and forth, sounding off orders. Lucy watched him worriedly, sensing that something inside him was moments away from unraveling.
“What are you talking about?” Ada asked, as he continued to ramble on about Mosley.
“I’m talking about an empty chair, Ada,” Tommy’s voice was barely above a whisper. “My chair. My throne. People think that I’m gonna fall. They start behaving in a different way around you.”
“Who thinks that?” Ada had gone still.
“They start to circle,” Tommy continued, as if he hadn’t even heard her. She shared an alarmed look with Lucy. “Who’s gonna take the throne, eh?”
“Tommy…” Lucy tried, reaching out a hand to him, hoping to pull him back from whatever dark precipice he was teetering on.
“Linda, she wants some for Arthur…Aberama Gold…people in the north…Michael…” He seemed to only just then realize that words which he had not intended to speak had been pouring from his lips. His jaw hinged shut and he spun away, his back to her and Ada, clearing his throat while raising his cigarette to his lips. When he turned back to them, his expression was collected once more, the mask that had momentarily slipped once again firmly in place. He reissued his order for Ada to go home and make some calls. “I need to get back to Birmingham. Lucy.”
“Yeah.” She made to follow him, as he was already moving with quick steps down the hall.
“Lucy–” Ada grabbed at her arm, alarm clear in her voice. Lucy turned half back towards her, taking in the worried look in her wide eyes and reached out to squeeze her arm.
“I’ve got him. Don’t worry.”
Ada’s lips pressed together, and while the concern still shimmered in her eyes, her shoulders relaxed a little. With a nod, she let Lucy go.
She had to jog a little to catch up with Tommy, his steps more hurried than usual. Stupid short legs, she mentally cursed, shooting them a glower before quickening her pace.
“Tommy…” she tried to get his attention, but he didn’t acknowledge her, and she decided not to try again until after they were out of the office and in the car, pulling out onto the street to start the trek back to Birmingham.
“No one is taking anything,” she said finally, definitively. “I won’t let them.” When he didn’t respond, she looked over at him. Distress and paranoia was still etched onto his face, his eyes shifting around as if searching for unseen enemies. “Tommy?”
“They’re all coming at us, Lucy.”
“Michael is a problem,” she acknowledged. “And so are the people up north. But I think Linda really just wants to get away. She’d sooner take Arthur back into the country than try to have him take your position. And you know that Arthur would never agree to usurping you. Aberama’s loyalty is guaranteed so long as we continue to support Bonnie’s boxing career.” She reached out to smooth a hand over the back of his head. “We’re alright. It’s mostly Michael and Mosley that we need to worry about now.” She watched his throat work as he swallowed, and she dropped her hand to instead rest on his forearm. “And, if any of the others do try to betray us, I’ll just kill them.”
He let out a small snort, looking over at her fondly. She was turned almost entirely with her side pressed against the leather seats of the car, body jostling slightly as they bounced along the uneven cobblestones. She cupped his cheek momentarily, a reassuring smile tugging at her lips. Some of the frantic paranoia had gone out in his eyes, and she relaxed at the knowledge that she’d managed to calm him down at least somewhat. He leaned into her touch, quickly turning his head to press a kiss to the center of her palm before returning his eyes back to the road.
“What would I do without you, eh?” he asked. She pressed herself to his side, the physical contact doing wonders to calm both of them. And there in the safety of the shell of the car, she didn’t need to worry about anyone spotting them. Her head came to nestle against his shoulder, the material of his coat soft against her cheek.
“Tell me what you’re thinking in regards to Mosley,” she requested. Tommy sighed, eyes remaining on the road while she rubbed a hand up and down his chest.
“I don’t think he’s going to stop trying to get me to join his new party.”
“You’re not a fascist.”
“Some in the family would say otherwise.”
“Then they’d be wrong.”
Tommy gave her a little peck on the side of the head for that. “I think he may be one of the worst people I’ve ever met.”
“Yeah,” she agreed. “And we’ve known some bad ones over the years.”
Keeping one hand on the wheel, he trailed the other through her hair. Being careful, as he always was, not to pull on any of the strands. “I have an idea. But it’s dangerous. And I’ll need to talk to Younger…”
She gave him a knowing look. “You want to do to Mosley and the fascists what you’ve been doing to Jessie and the communists.”
“Yes.”
“You think that you can stomach pretending to be one of them?”
“If it means stopping him.”
She nodded. Mosley was a monster creeping in the dark, waiting for an opportunity to pounce. Someone had to stop him. Might as well be them. They were probably some of the best equipped for the job, anyway.
“You would be alright with it?” Tommy asked, and she smiled a little to herself at how he always sought out her opinion on things.
“I’m happy with anything that wipes that smug look off his face.” Closing her eyes, she tilted her head to press a kiss to his neck. “You have my support. Always.”
“Thanks, love.” His hand dropped from stroking through her hair to wrap around her shoulders. “Have you managed to dig up anything on this Captain Swing yet?”
“Not much. Her real name is Laura McKee. She really is a commander in the IRA. That’s all our friends in Belfast have been able to find out, so far. I told them to keep digging.”
“Right.”
They rode in silence for a stretch of time.
“Are Lizzie and Ruby still coming home today?” she asked.
“Far as I know.”
“Maybe…she’ll be better now that she’s had some time away and gotten things out of her system.”
“Yeah. Maybe.” He sounded about as optimistic as someone who had just been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Lucy gave him a gentle pat in sympathy. His thumb rubbed back and forth against her upper arm where it was clasped. “Thank you for helping me with everything.”
“Of course. It’s what I’m here for.”
He pressed a kiss to her hair, and together they both turned their eyes to the dark road sprawling out in front of them.
∗ ∗ ∗
When they arrived home, Tommy took all but three steps into the house, and was promptly collided into by Ruby when she came dashing into the entryway to throw herself into his arms.
“Daddy!”
“Hello, my girl,” he hoisted her up so that her weight rested against one of his hips. Just the feel of her in his arms was enough to have the ache of missing her lessening. “How are you, eh? Did you have a good time at Uncle Arthur’s?”
She nodded, long dark hair swinging with her movements. “I baked brownies with Auntie Linda.”
“You did?”
“Hey kiddo,” Lucy stretched up on her toes to place a kiss to Ruby’s cheek after handing her coat off to Frances.
“Hi, Lucy!” Ruby beamed at her, and Tommy felt his heart swell. There was a time, he knew, that Lucy had been afraid that Ruby would hate her, given her complicated relationship with her mother. He couldn’t have been more grateful that wasn’t the case. He was pretty sure his sweet girl was incapable of hating anyone.
Amazing; how something containing such kindness and purity could ever have come from him.
The click of heels on the floor was his only warning to another figure approaching before Lizzie rounded the corner. Her head was held high, dress swishing around her ankles, hair styled meticulously in dark waves around her face. She did not smile when she saw him.
Quiet stretched on between them all. Finally, he forced himself to awkwardly clear his throat.
“Lizzie.”
“Tommy.” She said his name as if speaking the word was like swiping a razor along the inside of her throat.
Swallowing, he set Ruby down on the floor, bending so that he was at her level. “Ruby, why don’t you take Lucy to the kitchens and show her what Aunt Linda taught you, eh?”
“Yeah! Okay!” She tottered two steps forward to latch eagerly onto Lucy’s hand and begin pulling her along. Lucy shot him a puzzled look, eyes darting between him and Lizzie. Clearly wondering what he intended on saying in her absence.
Don’t worry, he pushed the thought to her gently. Something clicked behind Lucy’s eyes as she realized what this was all about. She raised an eyebrow, giving him a look.
Don’t be too hard on her.
I won’t. Promise.
She looked only half convinced, but let Ruby tug her away without complaint. Tommy waited until he could no longer hear the clatter of Ruby’s shoes on the floorboards before speaking.
“Where’s Charlie?”
“In the library, finishing up his homework.” Lizzie took a step towards him. “Tommy, listen–”
“He overheard.”
She froze. “What?”
“He overheard what you said about Lucy to Polly and Linda. And then he got mad, and repeated it to her.”
Her lips parted, eyes widening. A look of mild horror settled on her features, and the sight of it brought Tommy an odd sense of relief. That was confirmation that she hadn’t been purposefully whispering poison into his children’s ears, then.
“Oh…” Lizzie said, throat flexing as she swallowed. “What did he say?”
“He said that she’s just my whore. That everybody hates her.” The words tasted metallic as he released them, just hearing them again making him momentarily furious with her. But he breathed in deep through his nose and forced himself to remain calm.
Lizzie looked away, down at the floor. “Shit. I’m sorry, Tommy. He was never meant to hear that.” She shifted from foot to foot, not really meeting his eyes. “At least it wasn’t that bad…”
“Not that bad!? He made Lucy cry!”
Lizzie said nothing to that, still staring down at her shoes. Tommy shook his head, fishing into his pocket for his cigarettes.
Wait.
He’d just swiped one across his lips when her words clicked, his face snapping up to bore his eyes into her.
“Fucking hell, what else have you said about her for that to be considered not bad!?”
Lizzie still wouldn’t meet his gaze. “Are things between her and Charlie…?” she trailed off, pointedly not answering his question.
Tommy studied her a moment more, lighter clicking to raise the flame to his cigarette before answering. “They’re fine. I managed to smooth things over. He was just having a tantrum; he didn’t really mean any of it. And he’s apologized.”
“Good.” The plain relief on Lizzie’s face had him considering her. For all her faults, she had always been understanding and respectful of just how much his children meant to Lucy.
“You should never have said those things about her.” He took a long drag of his cigarette. “You need to apologize too.”
Her lips pressed together. “I’m sorry that he overheard that, Tommy, really. But…”
“But what?”
“But I’m not sorry for what I said.”
His fingers tightened around his cigarette. “Why not?”
Her jaw clenched, chin raising. “Because it’s the truth, that’s why. Everybody despises her, Tommy. You don’t hear how they talk about her when they know you’re not listening. She’s nothing but your whore. Your mistress–”
“Don’t you dare talk about her like that–”
“I will talk about her anyway that I fucking please. I’ll do it out of the children’s earshot, but I won’t swallow my opinions just because it might hurt her feelings.”
“She hasn’t even done anything to you!”
“She’s fucking my husband!” Lizzie burst out. “She’s fucking my husband when she knows I’m not alright with it. You may have decided that she can do no wrong, but that doesn’t change the fact that she has chosen, over and over, for years, to hurt me by staying with you. I think that I ought to be allowed to be upset about that, and to say whatever I like about it when in the company of my friends and family.”
“Lizzie–”
“I have let you two carry on as you have! I’ve let you do that, Tommy! Even though it kills me. I have…tried to be at least cordial with her. I know that I don’t always succeed, and I am sorry for that. And I am sorry that Charlie overheard. I’d never intend to turn the kids against her. But I have feelings, Tommy! I have to get them out somewhere. Better with Polly and Linda, rather than to her face.”
“Doesn’t seem to fucking work though, does it? All the hateful things that you say always get back to her eventually.”
“You know what? Fuck you, Tommy.” He saw some of the ice-cold contempt that had been blazing in her eyes when she left for Arthur’s days ago ignite once more. “I don’t want to hear it,” she started for the door to one of the sitting rooms.
“Oi! We aren’t fucking finished here,” he moved to follow her, and she rounded on him.
“What more do you want!? I said I’ll fucking apologize! Now leave me the fuck alone! It’s the least you could do.”
“Why the hell did you come back then if you didn’t want to be around us, eh!?”
“Because your daughter kept asking for you,” she sneered furiously. “And I knew that sooner or later, you’d drag us back here anyway to have her close.” She took a step nearer to him. In her heels, she was taller than him, if only by an inch or two. “I didn’t come back because I’m no longer upset. Or because I forgive either of you. I don’t. I never will.”
“Forgive us for what, Lizzie!? For sticking to the agreement that the three of us made which you then decided to change your mind about?”
Her throat convulsed, and for just a moment, her eyes seemed to glimmer tearily. “We could have had an actual chance at being happy,” her voice suddenly dropped to a desolate whisper. “If she wasn’t here.”
He wanted to shake her. How could she not understand? He couldn’t be happy without Lucy.
“If you really believe that, then you don’t know me at all.”
Her bottom lip trembled, cracks beginning to form in the hatred molding to her face, giving way to heartbreak.
Before he could say anything more, she whirled on her heel and stormed out the door.
∗ ∗ ∗
Lizzie found Lucy sitting alone, head propped up on one hand while she considered the chess board before her. She was playing herself, Lizzie could see. Moving both the black and white pieces around the board. Trouble was curled in her lap, asleep.
She hadn’t really spoken to Lucy since she and Tommy had arrived home. The kids had monopolized their attention for most of the evening; Ruby in particular was eager to play with Lucy and her father after going so long without seeing them. Lizzie had been fine with leaving them to it. In all honesty, she could use the break after having to manage Ruby mostly on her own. And after their conversation about what Charlie said to Lucy, she would rather have not been in the same room as Tommy anyway.
He’d retreated into his office to take care of some business after they’d put the kids to bed, leaving her and Lucy to their own devices.
Taking a tentative step forward, she forced herself to open her mouth.
“Lucy?”
The redhead looked up, and Lizzie could see the wariness that immediately entered her face upon catching sight of her. It was a look that she saw crossing Lucy’s face more and more whenever they interacted.
Lizzie supposed she couldn’t entirely blame her for that.
She gestured to the chess board. “Do you…want someone to play with?”
Lucy blinked, that wariness still not quite leaving her face. “Sure.” She started to move the pieces back into their starting positions on the board while Lizzie took the seat across from her, examining the little carved pieces of black and white wood. Lucy had whittled and painted each one herself, along with the board.
Once all the pieces were set up, she took hold of one of the white pawns on her side of the board, sliding it forward.
“I’m sorry,” she finally forced herself to say the words when they were about halfway through the game. Most of her white pieces had been swept from the board by Lucy’s black ones. Not surprising. She had never taken to chess all that well. Usually, Lucy went easy on her.
She felt Lucy’s large brown eyes jerk upwards to stare into her face.
“For what Charlie said. I didn’t…he wasn’t supposed to overhear that.”
Lucy looked back down at the board. She had one arm crossed over her chest, hand folded against the opposite bicep. Like she was holding an imaginary shield between them. “I figured.”
Lizzie nodded. At least Lucy’s opinion of her hadn’t sunk that low, then. “Still, I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine,” Lucy kept her eyes focused on the pieces, moving her queen to take one of Lizzie’s bishops. “It worked itself all out. I’m sorry that Tommy got on your case about it.”
“He’s just protecting you.” She hated herself for being unable to wholly mask the bitterness that underlaid her words. A guilty look crossed Lucy’s face, her head dipping slightly and her shoulders drawing in as if bracing for a slap. On her next move, she pulled one of her bishops back, leaving her rook open for Lizzie to take with one of her knights.
She wondered if Lucy had let her take the piece on purpose.
“How were things at Arthur’s?” Lucy asked, clearly eager to change the subject. Lizzie hesitated. There were a lot of things that Linda had told her in confidence that she was not eager to share. Everyone knew that anything that was told to Lucy would make its way back to Tommy.
“Things aren’t good between him and Linda,” she finally settled on saying.
“What’s she upset about now?”
Lizzie worried at her bottom lip. “Everything, really. Truth be told, going there wasn’t much of an improvement from being here.” She should have gone to Polly or Ada’s instead. But she had been afraid that both of them would try to talk her out of any ruminations she had about divorce. Linda, at the very least, had understood her feelings on that front. “Only difference was that I wasn’t the one doing the arguing.”
“Mm.” Lucy made a sound of sympathy, taking one of Lizzie’s knights with her remaining rook. “I am glad that you’re home.”
“You don’t have to lie.”
Lucy cocked her head. “I’m not. Look…I didn’t miss any of the fighting, but…the house feels empty without you and Ruby in it.”
“We may not be here for very long.”
That wariness that had mostly melted away from Lucy’s face while they played returned. “What do you mean?”
Lizzie plucked up the little white envelope that she had set down in her lap while they played. She turned it over twice in her hands, examining her own looping handwriting of Tommy’s name scrawled in black ink on the back of it. Holding it between two fingers, like she would a cigarette, she held it out to Lucy.
“Will you give him this for me?”
Lucy eyed the envelope as if Lizzie had just held out a hand grenade to her. She supposed in a way, that she had. She took it with her pale, lightly freckled fingers, handling the envelope gingerly while she examined it.
“What…?”
“Linda and I talked a lot. We thought that writing down everything that we need to say would be better than actually trying to say it. She’s written one to Arthur. Well…technically I think that she’s written two. She hadn’t decided which one to give to him yet when I left.”
Lucy turned the envelope over in her hands, brows furrowed. “Lizzie, what’s in this letter?”
She picked up one of the black rooks she’d taken, rolling it between her fingers. “Just make sure that he gets it, yeah?”
She could feel Lucy’s deep brown gaze on her, could imagine the way that the irises shifted a little from side to side as they tried to decipher what was going on inside her head. “Okay.”
“Thank you.”
Lucy nodded, slipping the envelope into the inner pocket of her suit jacket. Lizzie brought her bishop sliding across the board.
“Check.”
“I can send him to you tonight, if you’d like,” Lucy offered. Lizzie could only bring herself to look at her face for a fraction of a second before she had to look back at the chess pieces again. Anything to not have to stare at that sad, guilty look emblazoned across Lucy’s face. She shook her head.
“I doubt he’s going to want to spend the night with me after he reads what’s in that letter.”
Truth be told, a lot of the enjoyment from sleeping with Tommy had long since faded away. Physically, it was still good–the man was nothing if not very talented at what he did–but it was hard to ever fully enjoy herself when she knew that he would rather be with her. Lizzie could feel it, the disconnect between them a living, ever present thing in the spaces between them. Even when he was with her, in the most intimate of positions two people could be in, he wasn’t really with her. He always left all the important parts of himself in the other room, with Lucy.
If only the little red head in front of her wasn’t around…
She shook the thought away. That wasn’t what she wanted. Not really. For all her faults, at least Lucy tried. Certainly more than Tommy ever did. It was her, who more often than not kept Lizzie company on nights like this one. When Tommy was too enthralled with his work to be bothered to pay her any mind.
In a way, it only made Lizzie more angry with her. It would have been so much easier to hate her if she had been cruel and unapologetic in her actions.
For a time, at the beginning of her marriage to Tommy, Lizzie had hated her. She had hated her so bloody much, she nearly choked on it. But over time the feeling had…not quite faded, but scabbed over. It was hard to maintain hatred like that for so long. Especially when the person it was directed towards went out of her way to be so bloody nice and accommodating so much of the time.
Sometimes it still returned, the scab ripping off for fresh blood and agony to flow forth. And with it, the poison inside her leaked out, boiling over to spill from her lips in the form of vile curses and words. Things she may have meant in the moment, but not later. Not after she’d gotten a leash back on the jealousy that raged in her heart.
In those moments when the venom flowed forth, the looks that Lucy would give her, like that of a kicked animal, only served to make Lizzie hate her even more. Because how dare she make her feel guilty for hurting her? When she was the one who had hurt Lizzie first by stealing her husband.
But can you really steal what was already yours? What was given freely? How could she say that Lucy had stolen Tommy from her, when he had never even been hers to begin with?
Her fury was directed at Tommy too, often even more so. She suspected that was by design, on his part. His attempt to shield Lucy from her wrath and the hurtful jabs that came with it as much as possible. Yet another expression of his oh so precious, undying love for her.
Once she’d gotten it all out, the anger and resentment would scab over once more. It was in those moments that she grew as close as she could to accepting the arrangement between herself, her husband, and his lover. She and Lucy could even be considered something close to being friends.
And then they’d go through the entire cycle again.
She wondered if the scab would ever fully heal. She hoped that someday it would.
What she would give, to be at peace with her life and her choices. To be content.
But she knew that a part of her, no matter how small, would always resent Lucy.
“Do you mind if I also read it?” Lucy asked, drawing her from her thoughts. She’d moved her knight to counter Lizzie’s check on the chessboard.
“That’s fine.” She knew it would likely make no difference what she wanted; Tommy would tell her its contents either way.
She moved one of her pawns a space up.
Lucy moved her knight again. “Check.”
Lizzie moved her king, even though she could already see where the game was heading.
“You’re really thinking of leaving for good?”
She kept her gaze fixed on the chessboard, not wanting to meet Lucy’s analyzing eyes. “It depends on what he says about what’s in my letter.”
There was a long pause, and she found herself wishing that Lucy would just move her queen and put an end to the whole bloody game.
“Lizzie, maybe if you just give things some time…it’s a madhouse right now, with the crash and Michael coming back…”
“I’ve been giving things time since the fucking wedding, Lucy. And he still hasn’t–” she bit down hard on the words before she could say them. He still hasn’t changed.
Lucy stared at her sadly. “You’re still hoping that someday he’ll choose you over me?”
“Just play your bloody turn, Lucy.”
She hesitated, and then slid the black queen across the board. “Checkmate.” Her hand retracted, going to fidget with the other in her lap. Trouble roused at the cease in being pet, raising her head with a questioning meow. “Do you want to play again?”
“No,” Lizzie rose from her chair. Divorce or not, she doubted she would have to wait long to be free of them. She had watched these past few years as Tommy slipped further and further out onto a precipice, his mind almost fully lost to his own ambition. And when he finally went over the edge, he’d take Lucy right along with him. She truly believed that he wouldn’t be alive within two years’ time.
It startled her, a little, how the thought brought with it no sorrow or grief, but simply a feeling of deep, potent relief.
“I think I’m just going to go to bed.”
That infuriating guilt was shining in Lucy’s eyes again. She had to bite down on her tongue to keep from lashing out at the sight of it. Despite everything, she had meant what she said to Tommy about trying to be cordial with Lucy.
“Lizzie, you know that if you ever wanted to, the three of us could…” Lucy trailed off, biting her lip. Not needing to finish the sentence for Lizzie to know what she was referring to.
They’d made it clear that the offer was always open, if she wanted to share a bed with both of them again, rather than just Tommy. And she understood that, in a somewhat stunted way, Lucy’s offer was an attempt at comfort; at maybe even consolidation, for the situation that they’d found themselves in.
“Not tonight, Lucy.”
She saw a flicker of disappointment cross Lucy’s features, but she merely nodded, clearly having expected the answer, not pushing it any further. “Goodnight, then.”
“Goodnight.”
She just got to the door before Lucy called for her again. “Lizzie.” She was still sitting at the chessboard, one hand trailing her fingertips across the golden rings she was wearing on the other hand she had resting on Trouble’s patchy black and orange fur. Her red-painted bottom lip was caught between her teeth. “Is there anything that I can do?”
Yes: Leave. And never come back. “No.”
“But maybe–”
“Lucy,” she cut her off before she could say anymore, gesturing to the board. “Even when you go easy on me, it’s you who always wins.”

Lrb dear god, this reminded me of that time when Alfred-chan got sooooo mad at my post explaining why fans should respect bisexual headcanons for Maria and Malenia instead of pretending like they're canonically lesbians and that they get oppressed and erased by mxf ships with them. They kept vagueing that post for like a MONTH in their blog including in tags under reblogs of Maria fanart, passively-aggressively changed their url to character+sexuality to "spite" me and then even made a sockpuppet account to start shit with me in the comments.
They deactivated when me and Val completely obliterated their "you cultivate lesbiphobic following by telling people why they should respect all sexuality headcanons instead of acting cultish or assuming their experiences and stereotypes equal canon confirmation" garbage with actual facts and logic tho but I screenshotted everything fjthfgfj (I learned to document everything the hard way after they've changed the she/they pronouns to they/they pronouns ONLY to accuse me of misgendering, so thank you for making me wiser I guess 😎). Even more vile, as they, a white person, larped as an Arab in that sockpuppet to hold even MORE "privilege" against me in discussion gjtjfh Because for them race, gender or sexuality are just badges of honor and dishonor, they don't see these as traits of actual human beings. And Dr Eugene X, who worked with them and weaponized her race to accuse everyone who disagreed with her of racism, didn't bat an eye at such a terrible act too?? As usual, rules are not for their friends, lol
It is not even the worst thing Alfred did, and yet all of this just, just, JUST because I wrote a point on why bisexual headcanon people did nothing wrong and there is no ground to claim something is canon when it isn't. 🤦‍♂️ Like, they were soooo convinced that I hated lesbian headcanons and that I'd feel angry if they called Lady Maria a lesbian, when what I was angry at is this exact toxic behavior in the fandom. No matter how much you like a headcanon, don't be a bitch about it. Maria doesn't """belong""" to any gender or sexuality, she belongs to anyone who likes her and is invested in her complexity as a character!!!
Yet, apparently, common Malenia simps / Finlay shippers are no better than common Maria simps / Mariadeline shippers. Just, wild how after shit like this, many people have the guts to claim that it is "sexist redditbros" who are the biggest problem of creators in the fandom. 🤦‍♂️ They'd actually blush if they encountered what such self-proclaimed "feminists" do to their own (!!!) over headcanons. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
#also fuck anna for thinking shit like this and way worse things alfred did is not as evil and toxic as#as me snapping at her for DEFENDING alfred#wiki: I can excuse stalking harassment cultish shunning bullying fantomette lying slander weaponizing identity but-#-I draw the line at katy getting too emotional when I admit as much uwu#granted she did admit that the reason for this is because alfred didnt concern her personally#she is probably the person I'll forgive last in this situation if ever#as much as I hate alfred they clearly have no empathy and compassion and lie for medical reasons#it isn't my assumptions they often reblogged this shit#I know mental illness is not an excuse for so much harassment for variety of reasons but-#-why would someone want to change if they medically can't feel guilt for their actions?#I feel bad for them and they hopefully will get help#as for Eugene idk... they seem to be a typical brainwashed youth#such people either change with age or get strongly bitten in the ass and get reality check#granted people who still follow her did admit she goes head hunting and then plays victim#as well as they only keep in touch because they worry they'll be dragged down if they are not at her good side#rather than because they like her posts (which are so untrue to BB that she can just make OCs anyways)#choir boy is literally just mindless sheep that didnt even have dignity to make it personal#hence is the name#I am sure he is lovely in his own circle it just doesn't concern me or my friend#but anna?#she knew what she was doing and has no excuse#fandomry rambles#it is also funny how they are four cringe failures and us are four based people#best AND worst groups come in four lol#also I know you all are dying to know how I can still hold grudges year later right?#it is hard to explain#I live normally and recover and not think of it but then scar starts to hurt#like you know how physical scars can react to weather or shit? mental can too
