i almost had a panic attack (for the first time in years) at walmart this morning.

i ran in to grab my kid some shoes they need for a school thing and grabbed a few things while i was there. go to self-checkout, scanned my shit, hit pay and start feeding my money into the thing. put EIGHTY DOLLARS in there, look up to see how much change i need to add, and see that the total hasn't updated at all. look closer, and in the tiniest fucking font you've ever seen, i see that it says card only.

well, shit.

i call over the person working the self-checkout and explain what happened. she's like no big deal, if i suspend your transaction it'll give your money back and we can move you to a different register.

she suspends it. it doesn't give my money back.

she starts fucking with it, calls over another associate, and then a manager. i feel terrible, since it was technically my fault, but also, i cannot exaggerate how SMALL the little 'card only' banner on the screen was. the manager leaves, comes back, gets loss prevention, checks the register and the cameras, leaves again, and i'm just standing there all shaky while my ice cream melts.

she finally comes back, gives me $80 cash, and apologizes for the inconvenience while i apologize for causing the inconvenience. the self-checkout cashier moves me to a different register, pulls my transaction up, and i hit pay and put $20 in the cash slot.

GUESS FUCKING WHAT.

same thing. the total doesn't update. i call her over, AGAIN, and she's like that's so weird. proceeds to put the rest of my cash in, the total still reads $80.43. she's just like 'huh' and scratches her head for awhile. goes to find the manager again, who is now busy, while i'm just standing there.

finally another employee wanders over and asks what the issue is. i explain, she punches a few buttons and it gives my cash back. i rescan all my items and, having now learned my lesson, pay with my debit card, even though i was trying to USE MY CASH. i finally escape the godforsaken walmart, had to do some deep breathing in my truck before my hands would stop shaking enough that i could safely drive.

i'm home now. i'm exhausted. my stomach hurts.
