Ten facts abt the wife Vinh?

vinh society, tonight we feed...

if i had to be Very Concretely based in reality, vinh would be greek/viet ! for my own indulgence, she’s from like... the nam region/southern regions. like. realistically i know she’d probably speak with northern dialects but 🥴 op can’t understand a lick of northern vietnamese. but for the ppl who know abt spoken greek... i feel like she speaks katharevousa, strangely enough. in a more ‘proper’ context though, the further one is for the sierran ambrosias, i feel like something akin to ‘attic greek’ is spoken.

vinh is a bit of an ‘enigmatic’ figure at nrc because of how private she tends to be. she’s got perfect attendance and you see her around sometimes but also you really do just know... nothing about her, chunk of the time. she doesn’t particularly talk or respond in very interesting ways when you talk to her either.

she generally has 13 piercings but she’s also been known to be able to have about 18-20 piercings in or so, depending on how she feels like dressing for the day.

she was taught to play a variety of musical instruments as a younger girl but it’s been a while since she’s played some of them. vinh was actually taught a great deal of things concerning performance (song and dance included), but it’s just been some time since she’s actually had to do something along those lines so seriously.

vinh’s best class is between magical history and ancient incantations. alchemy was a strong contender, but a downside was that uh... she also knows very old versions to potions that have generally fallen out of practice. you have to be very specific with her, when it comes to that.

vinh’s love for donkeys is mainly on account of the sacred animal of hephaestus being the donkey in the mythos. vinh doesn’t particularly want a donkey as a pet, but she remains very fond of them either way. she thinks they are quite charming in their own way.

within ignihyde, i would say that her main specialization is with mechanical engineering? she works better with hardware than software, when it comes to tech stuff. just let her handle the physical things, you know.

vinh is on the same boat as cordell with being bad at animal communications. not because she refuses to speak but it’s mainly on accounts of her pride won’t let her go as far as going Nya Nya Nya at cats or squeaking at chipmunks to speak with them.

vinh’s doormat tendencies tend to backfire on her quite a bit. her dating track isn’t exactly... what you’d want to write home to your parents about. in fact, vinh’s absurdly low standards and lack of an actual backbone is a very typical grievance to wail on from her mother (and her sisters)

she finds the usage of brooms for flight to be a little strange, but then again, not everyone lives on a cloud. most of her more apparent confusion was kept to her first year at nrc. she’s learned to not question things so loudly. she tends to wince a little bit at her memories of her first year...

tired curses!!!! i also really love this contrast in their work..... its rly cute. alyx just saved the world and aymeric is hating the dictionary. i like how rough his narration is and then alyx calls and everything speeds up, and i especially love him staring into the empty room. it put another contrast between their circumstances, but its also rly damn accurate abt how it feels to share a moment over the phone w someone. it made me smile a lot

this one made me laugh ksjdf ahlis’ distaste for the saucer despite being drawn to it is hysterical, but it also mirrors a lot of her character flaws: avoiding vulnerability, placing stoicism before genuineness, planting her frustration on external things instead of herself. even confronting her own feelings draws some curses out of her, and i love that display of her personality.

honestly this was the hardest one to pic a fav for. i rly loved so many of these bc they check a lot of boxes for my Brand. this one sits the longest with active conflict + does a fantastic job staying clear despite all the trails it picks up w max’s foil n comradeship, the chocobo’s higher level of pity over people, the chaotic pack of Resistance members, and the highlander that vicky reasons over n kills. i love that word “limning” now; ur vocab always finds ways to surprise me w the way u use them (esp in describing settings)

usually when i think of lizzy writing, i think of how perfect ur verbs are, but this time i really liked the visuals and tone. hyana pushing food around her plate and sitting on the rooftops had such a lonely feel to them, but at the same time were rly enjoyable and clear imgs despite not having to be described forever. serella’s dialogue was perfectly on-the-nose, too. usually i rly linger on what is given too much detail, but this rly showed me how nice it is to air things out n leave the thought monologue unsaid.

does this get bonus points just for being in o’ghomoro? yes. i love how the tunnels are characterized by the senseless kobolds in them. the added pressure from their reasonings for being in this hellhole is even better, and i love the sigils concept. jace’s narration is so cold, too, which makes both the kobold’s ferocity and the team’s desperation more poignant: he doesn’t sound the type to exaggerate.

this one just screams fairy tale to me. the others do too, but the repetition of events rly knocks this one up the flagpole of ‘belongs in some mid 19th century kids story collection.’ i LOVE the sisters’ banter, and how the younger daughter gets incorporated a bit further for her attention. having the soldier take little pieces of each environment to prove they were real made them a lot more real to me, too.

i was p surprised that my fav of urs came so late, but i feel like this piece has a lot of what your really good at, and which i admire a lot: you aren’t afraid of emotional dialogue or arguments based in more than factual debate, and you capitalize on casual thoughts that reveal a lot more than they do at face value. i esp like that you rly make the most of two characters that overlap in values and personality so often--they acknowledge that overlap and work together with what they share.

(i mixed in Some adhd hcs becus i feel like for him those two are a lil connected becus of the symptoms overlapping. also tw for self harm, substance abuse, suicide, etc.)

octavio was diagnosed with adhd as a kid and y'kno, rejection sensitive dysphoria is one of the things that comes with it so when he started noticing his emotions being Really disregulated and his reactions being different from other people's he just kinda blamed it on that. he didn't get a bpd diagnosis until he was 21 when he went to rehab and that was the first time he had ever even heard of the disorder

he did start to go to dialectical behavioural therapy at 24 after he joined the games though because ajay urged him to

he's definitely impulsive type and self-destructive type. has zero impulse control and gets bored really easily do he just Does things to pass the time, anything that pops into his head. with the self-destructive type, he also has no self preservation at all. his stunts are absolutely a result of his bpd. he needs the attention and thrives off the adrenaline but he honestly doesn't care how injured he gets which worries a lot of people, especially ajay

chronic boredom is HELL for him and probably his biggest symptom overall. he cannot handle it at all and he needs to keep himself entertained. he'd set himself on fire and record it just to give himself something to do tbh

substance abuse is common to come along with bpd and yep. stim is kinda addictive. he's used other drugs before and he's gone to rehab for it but he hasn't gotten much better esp since using stim on live tv is now his fulltime job

he is so stubborn and he sees things in such black and white, the voicelines where he calls enemies the "bad guys" comes to mind. everything is either good or bad no in betweens and trying to change his mind is sometimes near impossible. he's the good guy and everyone else in his way is bad

he's got a bit of a god complex but ykno surviving impossible stunts and being insanely rich does that to you.

ajay has been his favourite person pretty much his whole life as she has also been his only real friend growing up. veryyy clingy to her but can go weeks just ignoring her and being distant for no reason other than to avoid feeling as hurt when she finally abandons him which she never really does becus she's scared of how he would react

him getting blocked by her hurt a LOT and he had a whole breakdown over it. he hated himself more than anything n defs did something stupid to try to take his mind off of it but she forgave him in the end and he completely forgot abt being upset becus zero emotional permanence

speaking of emotional permanence unless you actively talk to him and reassure him you don't hate him he Will think you hate him

sooo sensitive you could make the smallest joke at his expense and he will run off and get himself hurt. think of that quest dialouge where ajay made fun of his pants and he almost got himself eaten by prowlers

with that sensitivity come intense mood swings. anger and sadness are probably the worst for him but he usually turns it inwards rather than express it outwards

i genuinely hc that the gauntlet stunt was a suicide attempt i just can't shake that thought out of my head like he is definitely suicidal

he cries a lot but not in front of people. he got made fun of it as a kid so he tries his best to hide it. good thing abt the mask is that when he gets teary eyed people can't see it

the only time that he is quiet is when he's dissociating the fuck out. ajay's caught onto it by now and she sometimes tries to help out. usually he gets triggered by overstimulation like the room being too bright or if something reminds him of a traumatic event or his father

this is canon actually and probably mostly due to the adhd but this comes along with bpd sometimes as well; he stims All The Time. tapping his feet was a big one but now that he doesnt actually feel them anymore he's started doing other things like shaking, rocking or swaying in place, flapping his hands and snapping his fingers, etc.

he gets fixtated on things a lot like his favourite animals or music or cars and motorcycles but he can just as easily drop it all and start hating it for no reason because random splits just Happen sometimes. he has a Bunch of useless facts about things like sharks and bunnies from when he was a kid and if you need anyone to help u with ur car or motorbike he's ur guy

he's actually good friends with wraith because they relate to each other a lot mental health wise since wraith has ptsd and psychosis and those all share some similarities. sometimes they stay up together talking after a stressful day becus they just Get each other.

his abandonment issues are probably largely because of his father and 3+ step moms and nothing ever being a constant in his life

Hey so... How do you like... Find character voices, tones and speech patterns or mannerism for your characters? Especially with so any variations on the same cast members? I really admire it, and am having trouble doing it for a story I've had outlined and a cast I've had set for years, but now the writing time cometh and I cannot for the life of me put dialogue to any of this.

WOOF this is a Big Ol Question but i will do my best to explain how i work 😞🤙 the art of dialogue is a careful one and entirely too much practice BUT we will push on

as such, stickin this under a cut

so i’m opening up with a quick flex on y’all: my dialogue is the one of very few things that was always very Good abt my writing (to the point that in uni it was one of those things ppl never even bothered commenting on cause they were like ‘idk i cant make it better lmao’) SO ive been doing dialogue for YONKS and at this point i dont rly have to Think abt it so much as just. do it. lmao

but one of the reasons i got Good was because an a monotone autistic kid i spent a lot of my early years like... listening to how ppl spoke and mimicking it because yall i used to talk At The Same Speed In The Same Tone At One Hell Of A Lick for years and tryna sound normal took me just shutting tf up and having a good listen to how other people spoke, which is my first tip: listen to people!! sit in a discord chatroom!! listen to convos in a coffee bar!! be nosy and listen in on convos!! humans r VERY GOOD at talking and we love 2 do it and theres so many types of dialogue to listen out for that will help u get better!

the other tip is thinking a lot abt personality and how that shines thru; every person i write is a very different person to the character next to them, and how they are effects how they verbalise shit; let’s take, for instance, yang and weiss, yeah?

YANG comes from a backwater island off the coast of vale; it’s a rural, outdoorsy farming community that’s very tight-knit and quite remote, which means a few things for yang’s speech patterns. ONE is that she talks in a dialect native to patch, which is a more drawl-y (yet surprisingly staccato) version of vale’s accent. it’s also SLATHERED in local slang and terms that any valian will be thoroughly unfamiliar with. we’re thinking of a mix of rural southern america and also somehow californian/australian surfer dude stereotypes??? it’s a WILD mix.

WEISS comes from the very high-class, very technologically-advanced and Strict society of atlas, which has scandinavian/germanic origins! her speech is very measured and very articulate, given the high standard of education she’s been subjected to, and her atlesian accent (again, very german-esque) can be suppressed very well in the right crowd to better fit in (tho it shows when she gets Angery). she rarely uses slang, she’s speaks very clearly, and it’s all very... prescriptive, yeah?

so yang and weiss have literally two OPPOSITE ways of speaking, built in entirely different communities for very different NEEDS and personalities. of course they dont sound like each other; it’s not just a change of location, but a change of person. even if weiss had lived on patch and yang in atlas, what you could guarantee is that weiss could still be a stickler for grammar and yang would still learn all the slang that’s used in atlas/mantle/solitas, right?

this same process can be done for any character; ruby’s manic and talks REALLYREALLYREALLY QUICKLY CAUSE SHE HAS SO MUCH TO SAY AND IF YOU STOP HER SHE’LL FORGET WHAT SHE WAS SAYING AND THEN SHE WON’T REMEMBER AND IT’LL BUG HER ALL DAY SO PLEASE LET HER JUST JUST THIS ONE REALLYREALLYREALLY LONG THOUGHT OUT FIRST PLEASE HANG ON JUST A MOMENT--

but blake is very sort of. laid back and chilled and brooding and considering revolution so for them, they speak less often, and usually in much more succinct thoughts: we’ll see a lot of one-word answers, a lot of bluntness. of course, this backfires when theyre trying to be genuine because sometimes it gets in the way! of course, compared to, say, tribelands blake, who is chieftain and is REQUIRED to be more articulate, we see a blake who is still calm and collected and therefore they speak rarely with error. all very thoughtful, a lot more like weiss.

of course, thats not even going into how they TEXT as seen in frapp logs (since how someone speaks and how someone TEXTS is like, two diff ways for speaking) which is a whole other kettle of fish that’s still impacted by a BUNCH of other factors!

dialogue, when boiled down, is basically just an extension of a character’s personality -- and it’s an IMPORTANT aspect of their personality, because speaking is how we impart a lot of our ideas and thoughts into a space that other people can, uh, interpret! a character is, ultimately, a bunch of concepts that form a person, and when they speak is when those concepts are on show for everyone to see! so WHAT those ideas are and HOW they envision those ideas informs the way their dialogue will function. are they like ruby, who thinks twice as quickly as she can get the ideas out of her mouth? are they like blake, who likes to mull things over before jumping to conclusions (unlike theyre impassioned, of course)? are they like weiss, who had her way of speaking beaten into shape by academia? or are they like yang, who speaks in a way that best allows her to connect with her community and her people? these are all distinct people and ideas!

a good way to test if theyre distinct in your writing is to write down a transcript w/o any tags or names, and see if people can tell you how many characters are in that conversation. the most distinct their voice (even if they use similar words or one another), the better chance you have at having characters with distinct speaking methods. consider every word! consider every phrase! everybody approaches speaking differently!

"What a pretty sight.." the eyes of the creature skim over my face and body. He speaks in a language I can't understand and calls out a name. His pitch black eyes travel to a figure behind him. "She's all yours. Have your drink."

Another man steps out, just as pale as the other and he smirks. "My pleasure." It comes out, almost hiss-like. He opens his mouth to reveal his fangs and runs his tongue over them.

I stand frozen, too scared to move. I try to open my mouth to speak, but it's almost like my body is no longer under my control. All I can do is stare.

The creature with the fangs comes over to me in the blink of an eye, arm wrapped around my waist, lips against my neck. My heart skips a beat due to fear. "Don't worry darling.. It'll only hurt the first 5 seconds," His voice sent shivers down my spine. "I promise." He smirks and pierces his teeth through my skin.

I wake up to a phone call in a cold sweat. I glance around the room and find myself in the same place I always find myself after that same exact dream.. on the floor, huddled up in a ball-like form. I reach up to my neck to make sure it's okay and I let out a breath of relief when I feel no marks.

The breaths I take are sharp and short-lived. I sit up slowly and grab my phone and answer. I take a deep breath and try to forget the dream.

"What the fuck?" I make a face of disgust and push my bestfriend, Emily, away from me. "What?" Emily laughs. "They're good I swear! Just try it! C'mon Liz, they don't look that bad. They're good brownies!"

"This is what you called me at 3am for? Emily, it looks like actual dog shit, why would you ask me to try this? I thought someone was dying." I shake my head and turn to walk away. "I'm going home, I'm tired."

She called me and told me that there was an emergency and that someone was going to die. Being a good bestfriend that I am, I got out of bed, at 3am to be exact, and came over. If it was any other person, I would've told them to fuck off and deal with it themselves, I'm not in the mood to save lives right now, sorry.

It's not really a problem that she called at 3am, because it wasn't like I was sleeping anyways, just taking a nap. I was fine with that, but what ruined it was her shoving her plate of dog shit in front of my face as soon as I walked in.

"But I need to make sure they actually taste good by tomorrow or my boss will fire me," Emily frowns. "Pleaassee?"

"No, goodbye. Ask your, so handsome boyfriend, Hoseok, to try them, I'm sure he'll lie and say they taste good to make you feel better." I smile and wave goodbye. She waves back, still frowning. "Love you, Emily." I blow a sarcastic kiss that she responds with a flipped finger and many, many "naughty" words, ready to spill out.

"Thanks for nothing!" She yells out and I laugh.

She shuts the door and I walk to my car to go home.

Once I'm in my house, I immediately feel a strange air around me. If I were feeling like my normal self, I would freak out and leave that house and call the Ghostbusters, but for some reason my mind decides to convince me that it's nothing and I go upstairs to get my laptop from my room.

entry #26 To say I'm an asshole is an understatement. Assholes are dirty, smelly, unpleasant, disgusting, and weirdly shaped? I consider myself more like.. a sarcastic-toe. Here's why: I don't take things seriously, which tends to make the sarcastic side to myself come out regularly, (I know when to make a joke and how to be serious when I need to) and toe because.. nobody likes them. They're kinda just there to keep you balanced, but they're ugly. They're also almost always covered by socks and shoes. You don't see them much, but they're there. Get it?

It's weird to compare myself to a toe and I'm pretty sure nobody calls themselves one. Especially a sarcastic one.

Of course, people use it to insult themselves, I do too. Anyone could. But I bet you can't tell me anybody who has described themselves the way I just did with a toe.

Jungkook was always really weird and liked to chase demons down, even after I told them they didn't exist. I told him this up until I started having those dreams. Now, I'm not so sure.

I go onto Youtube to kill time, and watch Degrassi. I grab my headphones and I'm about to put them in until I hear a glass breaking in my kitchen.

I groan and frown. "Rivada, what the FUCK are you doing?"

I wait a couple of seconds until I get a reply.

"I was thirsty!" She yells back.

Rivada is the girl I've lived with for 6 months in this house. She's one of the most understanding, loving, kind person I've ever met. But, she's also extremely dumb and slow. Of course, this doesn't make me love her any less.

I check on all the bathrooms to see if the light is on. The one in my room is on and I go to knock and see if she's in there.

"Rivada? You in there?" No one answers and I let my hand travel to the door knob and I open it. My mirror is broken and the water is on in the sink. My heart rate picks up and I run out of the room to hers.

I'm shaking as I go up to her door and I slam it open.

She's laying over her bed, not breathing. I walk over to her and shake her. No response.

"Haha, so funny, Rivada. You can stop pretending now." I speak half jokingly and half not-so jokingly.

She takes in a sharp, long breath. "Oh thank God you were only kidding." I laugh. "C'mon, we have to go though, there's people outside who I really don't trust."

My breath gets caught in my throat. I push away from her as fast as I can. I glance over at her window that has the perfect view of the driveway and I see no one.

She slowly starts sitting up and I step away. "Liz, you know I wouldn't hurt you, why do you walk away so suddenly?" Her voice and dialect change. She speaks as if she was born thousands of years ago.

My blood runs cold and the color from my body drains.
