question I've never thought about until right now when I'm paranoid - do I capitalize "lieutenant" or "sergeant" when I'm not referring to a specific person or someone isn't being addressed?

ie: "the sergeant hands him a cup of coffee"

vs. "Sergeant Martin hands him a cup of coffee"

or do I capitalize it either way?
