thinking about kageyama’s “it’s the setter’s job to break the wall in front of the spiker” in reference to how kenma sponsoring hinata while he’s in brazil and onwards is effectively doing that on a financial level. once a setter always a setter.
#could talk about how the narrative purpose of every setter (at least in hinata’s story) reflects the idea of breaking a wall in front of him#for hours i think#i want to do a full manga read to fully think about that but#atsumu & hinata’s feeling that he needs kageyama. kenma & just the financial logistics of being able to go to brazil. oikawa & homesickness#obviously there’s more going on w/ all the characters but like. those 3 & kageyama (obviously) all have at least one big thing they help-#hinata overcome. kageyama has so many of these moments w/ hinata i’d have to rewatch & list them all but yea.#akaashi is also this but for bokuto. (bokuto is this for akaashi as well)#(& if we’re talking setters & spikers obviously hinata is that for kageyama. Obviously. they’re soulmates)#i know this is lowkey just me analyzing the concept of support which a team sport series is inevitably filled to the brim with#but with a lot of what i consider to be hinata’s big character moments
it’s always setters man. & that feels deeply intentional.#& takeda obviously but he’s the coach. that is his Narrative Purpose#i wonder if there’s something strong to be said about main characters positions within the team & their strongest overall narrative purposes#like ‘libero’ meaning free in italian & nishinoya & freedom being his Whole Thing. he goes to karasuno bc he likes the uniform!!#i’m curious if i took every character & took their position if i’d find a list of commonalities between their narrative purposes. idk!#but yea anyways i dislike dumbing down hinata’s relationships w/ his setters as like ‘omg setter harem’ as anything other than a light joke#but hinata & setters is such a big deal. almost all my favorite hinata dynamics are with setters i think & that’s bc of that importance#if anyone read this rant in the tags thank you for your time lol. happy birthday hinata i love you forever#haikyuu!!#haikyuu#haikyĆ«!!#hinata shouyou#hinata shoyo#kozume kenma

Hi so this is me ranting about Ash being Goh's n01 supporter in project mew 😍 (as he always is ofc)
Tumblr media
"I wanna join. Project Mew! For sure!"
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
"You know what? I'm gonna cheer you on with all my might!"
the way he said you sounded a bit like it was a thank you for goh always cheering on ash during his battles đŸ„ș (it also sounds like I'm analysing too much again looooooooollllllllllll)
I always thought this was Ash just being dead supportive to Goh like he always is but he meant this so much 😭😭😭💗
Tumblr media
"You're coming too, Ash?" (the hand on goh's shoulder omg and ash looks so cute idfjkmf)
Tumblr media
"I promised I'd always cheer you on, didnt I?"

Tumblr media
"Good for you, Goh! I'm fired up about this too!"
i am so tempted to make a post on how touchy these guys are bc oh my god they are so touchy 💀💀 and hellllllll ash was not lying at all about being fired up about project mew, the entire trial period it was almost like ash was taking the missions, bless him 💖😂
Tumblr media
"I'll help any way I can!"
it's so sweet to me ash constantly reminds gohof this fact <3
look at danika leaning in the back guys she knows
Tumblr media
god ive talked ab this episode far too recently to rant about it here but đŸ„ș😂
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
the way ash is looking at him so intently...i cannot 💀💀💀💀💀
Tumblr media
"This time I'm going by myself."
"WHAT? HOW COME?" 😹😹 (that literally deserves to be in caps because he indeed shouted it lol ) he sounds so in disbelief, it's so sweet he just sees going along with Goh everywhere now his second nature 😭💙💙💙
Tumblr media
but after goh explaining why, then ash just smiles and wishes goh the best of luck (as he always does bc he's just happy goh is happy)
like
why is this boy so precious
Tumblr media
"I made it through!" I SEE THAT BLUSH HEAJDKAJ (it was obviously from excitement but blushing goh is quite rare in ultimate jrnys and he looks too cute when he does it) 😂

let's talk about Cubert Farnsworth
something nobody said during the production of season 7
The most striking thing about Cubert, to me, is the fact that in the most literal sense possible, he had no childhood.
Tumblr media
Well, no early childhood – in “A Clone of My Own”, we see Cubert spring into existence as a fully-formed twelve-year-old, having only previously existed in a “mentally undeveloped” state in a tank in Professor Farnsworth’s basement. This is obviously convenient from a writing standpoint, allowing Futurama’s showrunners to introduce a new character effectively out of nowhere (their original plan to do so in “A Big Piece of Garbage” having fallen through) – but I think it also explains a lot about Cubert from an in-universe perspective, and makes an interesting lens through which to view one of the show’s most divisive characters.
Generally speaking, we as viewers are used to meeting characters and then witnessing their backstory, either all at once or in small chunks scattered across episodes - Futurama itself goes as far back as Fry, Leela and Bender’s births in seasons 3, 4 and 3 respectively – but Cubert is in the unique position of his “birth” (so to speak) also being his introduction to the audience. While most of that audience simply brushed his character off as “annoying” and that was the writers’ intention according to the audio commentary for his debut episode, I want to set authorial intent aside for now and focus strictly on what the text shows us: someone who was artificially created for a specific purpose, like Bender, raised without a traditional family, like Leela, and who entered the world of the 31st century through a glass tube, like Fry.
Tumblr media
Despite having a surprising amount in common with our three main heroes, Cubert is markedly different from them in his actual personality, which (at first) is driven largely by reason and logical sense, and that
well, makes logical sense. As with most of the sci-fi concepts Futurama employs in the service of good stories and jokes, the show glosses over the finer details of how Cubert can emerge from the cloning tank with all his motor skills and the ability to form sentences, but it’s reasonable to assume that whatever arcane scientific process the Professor used prioritises imbuing the clone with concrete knowledge over anything subjective. Cubert’s behaviour corroborates this: the very first piece of knowledge he displays is (in a quiet subversion of cloning tropes) self-knowledge, namely the knowledge that he’s a genius.
Tumblr media
ok so the park line isn’t strictly relevant but cmon you can’t quote this scene without it
Cubert’s approach to suddenly springing to life with a ready-made body and personality is to engage with the adults around him head-on: said personality is pompous, pedantic and pugnacious (...as in “confrontational”, not as in a crack about his nose). He struts into Planet Express like he owns the place (which, of course, he will one day) right in the middle of season 2, the point where it’s safe to say the audience and characters (even fish-out-of-water Fry) have both adjusted to the show’s status quo: Professor Farnsworth can create anything as long as it’s funny or convenient to the plot (or both); Bender is an integral part of the “family”; Leela can beat up anyone who deserves it. But Cubert, who was abruptly thrust into the midst of that status quo, relentlessly questions it: how exactly would scientists “increase the speed of light”? What use would a delivery company have for a bending unit? Should Leela really fly with just one eye? Audiences and characters alike generally like sticking to the status quo (as this ever self-aware show pointed out back in “When Aliens Attack”), so it’s really no wonder Cubert rubbed people on both sides of the fourth wall the wrong way.
Tumblr media
you know someone’s being insufferable when not even Turanga “it’s not his fault he’s an unstoppable killing machine” Leela likes them lol. believe it or not this IS a pro-Cubert post stick with me here
Questioning established norms is no bad thing, but the way Cubert goes about it is very... blunt, and far from endearing: he’s dismissive of the Professor’s “junk heap” of inventions and viciously mocks the Planet Express crew, painting people he’s only just met as incompetent and, later in the episode, calling Fry an idiot to his face. Make no mistake, this is
as we say in my neck of the woods, it’s not on. But while Cubert’s lack of socialisation “growing up" doesn’t excuse his tactlessness, it might very well explain it - along with him lacking the childlike wonder his fellow suspended animation survivor, Fry, felt at being thrust headlong into a world where the only limit to science is imagination. To use the episode’s Arc Words, “nothing is impossible”... except, it would seem, Cubert fitting in with the misfits who make up Planet Express.
Tumblr media
Professor Farnsworth is eager to take Cubert under his wing, but also demonstrates where the latter gets that bluntness, being transparent about his intent to have his clone “spend his life finishing his inventions”. With that in mind, perhaps it’s not surprising that Cubert initially attempts to distance himself from the Professor, coldly referring to him as
 well, “Professor”.
Tumblr media
This is a detail that’s easy to miss or overlook on first viewing of the episode, but it effortlessly and efficiently explains what kind of relationship between the two Cubert initially desired: he acknowledges that they share DNA, but would prefer a “creator-creation” dynamic – perhaps akin to a robot and their maker - over anything familial. He states his disinterest in fulfilling his intended purpose as an inventor without a trace of the self-doubt that plagued Bender upon quitting his job and meeting Fry (or in the face of being replaced by a more up-to-date robot, or of being forgotten, or
), creating the impression that Cubert has a good deal more confidence and self-awareness than even an adult in a similar position to him, but also that he’s – let’s be fair to him – a complete dick, pointedly declaring himself the Professor’s “only half-decent invention”.
Tumblr media
But as is often the case in fiction, that complete dickery serves a purpose in creating the catalyst for the episode’s fast-paced third act: the dejected Professor checking himself into cyber-retirement. In a perfect example of the characters’ recently-found comfort with the status quo, Fry immediately expresses a desire to rescue his boss who causes him more problems than he solves (what with the potentially fatal delivery missions and all), but who’s also family - a sentiment his non-blood relatives, or at least Leela, seem to share.
Tumblr media
The only person at Planet Express who questions this desire is - who else - Cubert, but Fry brushes off his concerns with a well-placed “nothing is impossible” (the episode’s second use of the phrase). As an implicit reminder of Cubert’s status as a misfit among misfits, he, as a child character among a cast of adults, lacks the agency to avoid getting dragged along on the rescue mission for reasons that aren’t initially clear, to him or the audience.
It turns out Cubert’s purpose on the trip to the Near Death Star is to be both a DNA donor and part of Fry’s 160-year-old man disguise. Our three heroes do most of the heavy lifting (literally in Fry’s case), relegating Cubert to what he initially does best: complaining. While he does express a bit of (at this point) uncharacteristic concern for the comatose Professor, it comes after he airs his grievances about the ridiculousness of Leela’s plan, having to be Fry’s hump and the “stupid robot” – so maybe it’s a bit of well-placed karma that he gets knocked out mid-chase scene by a passing space station door, neatly excising him from the episode’s narrative.
...or so it would seem: in reality, the episode’s final two scenes circle right back to Cubert and his character arc. He springs awake to deliver the episode’s third and final “nothing is impossible”, having finally internalised the truth of it - and the secret of how to fix the ship’s damaged engines - thanks to a conveniently-timed dream (a borderline deus ex machina that may be an allusion to Groening and Cohen’s inspiration for Cubert, Wesley Crusher of Star Trek: The Next Generation – I did say at the beginning I was going to set authorial intent aside “for now”). Despite this apparent 180, Cubert demonstrates that he’s still fundamentally himself by shooting down Bender’s labelling of his discovery about the ship’s engines as “a complete load”. Evidently, Cubert’s nocturnal, almost divine revelation enabled him to use his sharp tongue for good rather than evil, as this discovery and Cubert’s quick repair of the engine is what allows the main trio and Farnsworths to safely escape from the Sunset Squad.
Tumblr media
The episode’s conclusion uses a few well-chosen words and pieces of animated-acting to bring many aspects of Cubert’s character full circle. Most obvious among these is the conflict of whether or not he’ll fulfil his intended purpose; the Professor granting Cubert permission not to is a noble but ironic gesture, as the latter admits to having accepted his destiny, but only on his terms: not as a copy, but as a family member. Futurama, at its best, is masterful at showing and not telling; for instance, because Cubert initially addressed his creator as “Professor”, him switching to “Dad” completely unprompted feels like a display of agency as well as love.
Tumblr media
And because Cubert had no childhood, him smiling with his whole face for the first time in the episode also marks him doing so for the first time in his life.
Tumblr media
Let’s take a brief step back outside the text itself and look at it in relation to the various reactions viewers have had to it, because the episode’s resolution is something that
well, viewers have had varying reactions to. Looking up the episode on Wikipedia, you’ll find a citation of The A.V. Club’s review: one Zach Handlen wasn’t a fan, claiming that “[Cubert’s] shift from “This is stupid and doesn’t make any sense” to “Anything is possible!” doesn’t make a lot of sense”. YouTuber Johnny 2 Cellos seemed to enjoy the episode and Cubert’s character considerably more, but still said of Cubert’s decision to follow in his father’s footsteps that he’s “not sure [it] was the best lesson” - and honestly, they both raise valid points. Cubert’s change of heart is rather abrupt, and a step removed from the typical feel-good narrative of choosing your own destiny and becoming whatever you want
but nonetheless, I do think it’s a plus for his character, and to explain why I need to go back to the very first episode of the show.
Tumblr media
The aforementioned “choosing your own destiny” narrative is so prevalent that Futurama itself has played with it from the beginning – and I do mean “played with”, not “used wholesale”. This is, of course, a fantastical show, but it always keeps a degree of emotional realism close to its heart; part of that realism is Fry’s one-way trip into the future not being the straightforward wish fulfilment he initially expected, as his new life still involves having a job, and it’s nominally the same dead-end job he once longed to escape. But Fry isn’t resigned to this: instead, he accepts the hand the universe has dealt him and makes it work for him

Tumblr media

in fact, the theme of accepting one’s fate on one’s own terms is a theme that runs through Futurama all the way to the end of the original run.
Tumblr media
And right in the middle of that run lies Cubert, perfectly exemplifying that nuanced theme with little more than the word “Dad.”
Tumblr media
That choice to – again - show and not tell the change in how Cubert views his creator-father is something that I feel mitigates the suddenness of his change of outlook: wanting to emulate one’s father is a different feeling than wanting to emulate one’s creator, and a very human feeling... as is having sudden, eye-opening experiences in one’s preteen years. Cubert’s arc in this episode could be seen as a microcosm of growing up, and as a story of someone who thought he knew everything realising he still has growing up to do
and about a season later, we get to see him do some of that growing up.
Tumblr media
Much like Cubert himself was initially intended as one thing and grew into another (on both meta and in-universe levels), I started this post with the intent to analyse him as a character but it ended up more focused on “A Clone of My Own” specifically – I might as well continue on this path and analyse “The Route of All Evil” as well. However, I don’t feel the need to do so quite so meticulously simply because Cubert is a far more straightforward character in the latter episode - and that in itself speaks volumes about what’s going on under that ginger muffin-shaped haircut.
This episode provides an explanation of Cubert’s absence throughout the second half of season 2, a glimpse into the life he’s been living off-screen at boarding school and something any good character needs: a companion to bounce off of. Dwight has less distinct characterisation than Cubert (partly as a result of having one less episode worth of development at this point), but I do think what he does have is worth analysing. I won’t do so too deeply, at least not here, simply because it’d be outside the scope of this post, but I will touch on the aspects that are relevant to my point: the ways in which he complements and contrasts Cubert.
Tumblr media
Cubert and Dwight are similar in their intellect, precociousness, love of retro video games (really retro by the year 3002) and in being besieged by a bully, but the latter is less talkative and more chilled-out (as exemplified by him having no visible reaction to his best friend being sent flying by a mail tube), yet more business-minded: his immediate reaction to being presented with something new (always a fun way to tell us about a character) is to question its value as a product
while Cubert’s reaction to the same new thing is to use it for a prank.
Tumblr media
As he demonstrated with Bender at the end of “A Clone of My Own”, Cubert hasn’t lost his fire in gaining respect for his father’s line of work: again, him addressing the Professor as “Dad” says a lot with few words, and remembering the context of his debut episode makes his “useless contraption” comment feel more like playful ribbing than genuine dismissal. Indeed Cubert spends much of the first act of this episode causing annoying-but-ultimately-harmless problems for the adults around him, along with Dwight, who evidently shares his interest in pranks. That interest of his wasn’t explicitly shown in his debut, but feels like a natural offshoot of his sarcastic sense of humour... and could also be chalked up to the change from the ultimate sheltered upbringing to a “normal” school environment. That in itself is a refreshing approach for the show to take: while probably done for simplicity’s sake, it shows that Cubert’s clone status is no barrier to him enjoying a normal childhood, as Leela’s orphan status was to her, or Bender’s robot status sometimes is to him sharing his adulthood with his organic friends (but the specifics of Cubert’s school life are more within the realm of speculation and headcanons, so I won’t dwell on them here).
Of course, the main thrust of “The Route of All Evil”’s plot is Cubert and Dwight’s business endeavour: Awesome Express. Again, I don’t need to analyse their motivations for founding their own delivery company too closely, because
well, Dwight outright states them in the episode.
Tumblr media
Most people can relate, on some level, to wanting a loved one to be proud of them; a desire so universal is a perfect demonstration of Cubert’s newfound normality. It’s a sharp turn from his apparent superiority complex over his father and future employees in “A Clone of My Own”, but clearly one that made him happier: the permanent smug grin of his debut episode has given way to laughter at Hermes’ expense, casually sharing Dwight’s game console, celebrating their victory over Brett Blob (or rather his window)
I could list more, but you get the point. Enjoying the childhood that started twelve years too late without really dwelling on it feels like a natural evolution from where we left Cubert in season 2 – but not a wholesale change, as he still possesses the spark of madness he inherited from his father.
Tumblr media
In the process of running Awesome Express, Cubert and Dwight make both upstanding and underhanded decisions: they have the prodigious business skills to quickly become more profitable than Planet Express, and rather than frivolously spending their earnings, they put them towards fair wages for their new employees Leela, Bender and Fry
and the absolutely vital flame decals for the ship.
Tumblr media
Not all their decisions are that ethically sound or badass, though: Cubert and Dwight ultimately kick out and fire their fathers, respectively. Professor Farnsworth becoming homeless (though Hermes and LaBarbara are willing to at least temporarily put him up) as a result of his son’s hubris is another time I can see where Cubert’s haters are coming from, along with his moments of ableism directed at Leela’s vision problems and Fry’s
er, That Brain Thing – but karma swiftly comes down upon him and Dwight when they grow overconfident with their workload, leading to the first time we see Cubert cry on-screen (one of only two unambiguously canon times in the entire show) and the aforementioned admission of their motivations.
Luckily for the boys, their fathers recognise the purity of their motivations enough to forgive them for their questionable behaviour, and are quick to “do a little father-son weaselling out of this”. Professor Farnsworth and Hermes prove their love for their sons with actions, not words, solving their problem with the former’s arsenal of gadgets and the latter’s perfect aim as a “paper-man”... and ultimately put themselves through the ringer by attempting to fight the father of their sons’ bully, Mr. H. G. Blob. This one-sided “fight” results in slapstick humour, but also a show of Futurama’s emotional realism shining through its often cynical sensibilities.
This episode’s ending focuses more on “three fathers, enjoying a day out with their sonsïżœïżœ as a group than Cubert or Dwight as individuals, but that in itself is a nice way to bring this duology of episodes full circle: Cubert is Professor Farnsworth’s son, no different from how Dwight and Brett are Hermes and H.G.’s sons. Perhaps he does fit into the abnormal, non-traditional family that is Planet Express after all.
Tumblr media
fun fact: “Planet Espresso” dropped while I was still writing this post and it made “The Route of All Evil” hit different now I know Hermes in particular was working extra hard to end the cycle of parental neglect. not relevant to the whole “Cubert good” point but still interesting, at least to me
Now, you’re probably thinking that this is the part where I talk about “Bender Should Not Be Allowed On TV”, and
yeah. You’re technically right, I will briefly touch on it – but it won’t be complimentary.
Tumblr media
Someone being “out of character” is a common complaint when it comes to TV show writing, but I’ll be completely honest: in my opinion, having Cubert, a character whose whole deal used to be questioning the status quo and authority figures (and in “The Route of All Evil” trying to surpass them), open the episode by admitting he and his equally precocious best friend want to mindlessly emulate what they see on TV goes beyond “out of character”. Cubert and Dwight’s intellectual-yet-rebellious nature would’ve served this plot perfectly, as it would’ve provided an opportunity for the writers to call attention to them not acting like themselves as a result of Bender’s influence – but the key gap between idea and execution is that the adults around them don’t treat their mindless viewing habits as something out of the ordinary for them. A simple “this isn’t like you” from the Professor or Hermes would’ve gone a long way, but as it is, it feels as though the boys’ past characterisation was intentionally ignored in order to more easily execute a storyline that could’ve been done in The Simpsons, with Bart and Milhouse succumbing to the allure of a newly-famous Homer’s bad influence.
In particular, the line “we can celebrate the day I extracted you from the cloning tank” kind of breaks my brain: we’ve seen that day in the show, and the more I go back to this episode, the more I feel like there’s nothing left of the Cubert the Professor extracted from the cloning tank – the one I just spent five pages analysing - in this specific Cubert (or the Dwight who crushed Planet Express with Dwight Lightning in this Dwight, for that matter). No scientific skills, no use of his trademark snort, no biting-but-good-natured jabs at his adult companions
nothing. To be fair, the episode does have a few nice ideas (the concept of a Growth Scraping Day itself, Tinny Tim becoming the third member of the kids’ friend group and them getting to do a little crime as a treat), but they’re so thoroughly surrounded by
well, everything else that I personally choose not to incorporate this episode into my mental picture of Cubert (or Dwight).
Tumblr media
I’ll be the first to admit there are a lot of duds and weird writing choices among the post-revival episodes of Futurama, but I also think fans of the show have a tendency to put the Fox era on a pedestal while completely dismissing the later seasons - even though “Bender Should Not Be Allowed On TV” (along with “Bend Her” but that’s a rant for another time) proves that even season 4, often touted as the show’s peak, can be as guilty of bad characterisation or formulaic plots as the Comedy Central or Hulu eras. Conversely, season 6 in particular was flawed but did plenty of things right, and one of those things was using Cubert in interesting ways: “The Late Philip J. Fry” is the most famous example, but “A Clockwork Origin” and “Overclockwise” are both notable for succeeding at building on the foundation laid out in “A Clone of My Own” and “The Route of All Evil” - where Cubert’s last outing of the original run failed.
Tumblr media
Whether that foundation was laid down intentionally or simply as a compromise between multiple creators, writers and directors that happened to meet a particular subjective reading, to me it’s an incredibly strong one: a fish-out-of-water who was abruptly thrust into the chaotic world of the 31st century but survives and thrives in his own funny, interesting, slightly unhinged way, just like Fry, Leela or Bender. Cubert isn’t for everyone, but I hope I’ve demonstrated why he resonated with me so much when I watched the show at his age, and why thinking of him as simply “the annoying kid” was
 well, impossible.
This post is long enough as it is, so rather than analysing “The Late Philip J. Fry” (well, enough people have analysed that one already that I don’t really need to) and the two “clock” episodes of season 6, I’ll leave you with the suggestion to (re)watch them yourself with an open mind
and to keep an eye out for Cubert in the Hulu run. As I alluded to at the top of this post, season 7 conspicuously pretended he didn’t exist outside of one dubiously canon skit, so maybe it’d be too much to hope for future seasons to explore him in detail
but as a wise old man and his son once said, nothing is impossible.
Not if you can imagine it.
Tumblr media
THANK YOU FOR READING (or at least skimming) ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THIS POST!!! as a reward for indulging my autism please treat yourself to a nice turducken spread with your found family. merry hulurama to all and to all a good night

apologies for any grammatical erros!
long ass note:
so i got this request which i won't be showing in case it might trigger someone nor will i tag the person who requested this bc im not sure if he would be comfortable with it. i've never written about sh hurt comfort before, simply because i didn't feel like i could do justice for the comfort part but i tried my best and tried to make it not so triggering. your media consumption is your own responsibility, please proceed carefully and do not read if you're not in the right mindset. if you're struggling, i know it's hard but please reach out to a loved one or even me. you're not alone, you matter.

price:
it was purely on accident that he saw your scars. he wouldn't mention it to you but he would ask around, people you interact with if they've heard or seen anything. when they asked questions he would simply shut them down or use his rank and pull the "classified information" card. he wouldn't really know what to do, given he's your superior so it was kind of his responsibility, so he got in touch with kate to help him find a therapist. his first instinct is to get professional help if needed. he would invite you to his office so it's just the two of you and make you comfortable, even make you a cup of tea. he would approach the topic carefully and wouldn't force you to tell anything you didn't want to, reassure you that he's not upset, he just wants to help. if you refuse to get a therapist it's okay, he completely understands and will offer you to talk to him instead. he may come off as stern sometimes but it's just because he genuinely cares so much about you and is worried constantly, no matter how old the scars are. he would try to think of alternatives for you to put that energy into if you still struggle and would be there anytime to comfort you. he kinda acts like a dad (like w everyone bruh)

ghost:
oh sweet lord this man. he kind of had a feeling when he noticed that even in the hottest weather you only wore long sleeved clothes. he would notice them when your sleeve and the somewhat shorts you had on accidentally rolled up. you just ignored his eyes burning holes through you, given it was normal for him to just stare menacingly at anyone. (not on purpose tho he just looks mean by default) i wouldn't say it would trigger him, but it would definitely stir up some unpleasant feelings inside of him because of his past. he knows exactly how you feel and wants to help you, no matter if you're a friend or just some rando at the base. just like price he would approach the subject carefully, knowing well how hard it is to reach out for help and how it's even harder to open up and actually talk about it. he isn't the best at comforting but he's is a damn good listener and he'll let you know that if you need him don't hesitate to talk to him even if it feels useless. will crack those stupid jokes of his to make you feel better lol tbh i feel like he would be the best kind of person to open up to because he relates so much, he completely understands the feeling of being ashamed of self-destructive activities and would be the sweetest during a relapse. would caress gently the older scars on your body if you allow him to :(<3
he strikes me as a very straightforward person bc of the graves scene. my dude just straight up told the cabrĂłn to stfu (as he should!!) so based on this i think as soon as he sees he's all up in your business. of course not with the intention to make you uncomfortable but he just wants to make sure you're okay and is absolutely willing to help whether it's finding a therapist or just giving a shoulder to lean on. he values every single person in his life and would literally do anything for them and obviously you're no exception. ngl it would be kind of uncomfortable and awkward as you're not used to so much attention especially surrounding your mental health, but he just wants to do good and he's willing to do anything to help and i mean anything. you need a break from work? done. a hug? you don't even have to ask. he will do everything for you if you feel too drained to do even basic things such as cooking meals, helping you shower if you're comfortable with that and etc. basically becomes a househusband for you!

please don't kill me but genuine question about sns (disclaimer that i've only seen the anime, not read the manga, shameful ik): in shippuden, naruto's attachment to sasuke felt sooo forced to me at first because it looked extremely one-sided and i resented naruto a lot because he acted like sasuke was the same as he was before he left and was projecting/in denial rather than seeing sasuke as his own person with agency and who had different ideals/methods. Obviously things were put in a different light when we eventually learn about the indra and ashura, and the reincarnation/soulmate thingy but idk it never erased that first impression for me, despite sns connection being obvious at the end i still disliked naruto as a character. So would really appreciate your perspective on this!
lol i won’t kill you, it’s fine.
tbh i just think this all to me seems like you got stuck in early shippuden naruto characterization and like i cant remember how it’s in the anime (thankfully) but in the manga is pretty clear that.Yes, naruto attachment to sasuke looks one sided then and it is intentional!! kishimoto wrote that on purpose. same with naruto not being able to see that sasuke is different. i always joke a lot how at the beginning of part 2 naruto has deluded himself to believe sasuke leaving for orochimaru was almost like a kidnapping where he’s convinced he has to save sasuke like a damsel in distress from the tower he was locked in. which ofc while orochimaru basically groomed sasuke to seek him, sasuke still is not being held captive (and actually he’s planning to kill orochimaru and take his autonomy back). but the point is that Naruto starts to realizes he’s never gonna get sasuke back like that and after jiraiya’s death he understands a little more why sasuke would choose revenge too. idk why you mean by forced tho because to me naruto’s obsession w sasuke is one of the most natural thing to come from him. traumatizing kid latching himself to the first person that showed him love and refusing to let go it’s pretty realistic. imo this obsession also it’s what humanizes naruto the most. he wants to save sasuke because he doesn’t want sasuke to suffer but he also Needs to save sasuke because he’s pretty codependent on him emotionally and needs him by his side for his own goals and life to have meaning. it’s a pretty selfless and selfish trap he’s in.
back to the whole one sided thing. once again this is pretty intentional. kishimoto hides sasuke’s feelings for naruto, most of his arc in part 2 he only leaves small pieces here and there but nothing as grand because he wanted to make the big reveal at vote 2 where we finally get to know that sasuke had developed a similar attachment to naruto since childhood but deals with it completely different (since they have complete different perceptions of love). the whole point of this is that it should recontextualizes their entire dynamic again because now you’re aware the same feelings of yearning and love naruto had for sasuke that lead him to chase him for years and become unhealthy obsessed were mirrored by sasuke and because his different view of love this is why sasuke kept running away.
anyway idk if this will help or not but yeah i still recommend the manga

About the topic of Luci giving Eve the apple (I'm the same anon who wrote that they didn't like each other back then btw)
I kinda feel it was mostly Lilith's doing tbh. Just think about it. The apple itself doesn't "give" free will. It's the apple of knowledge. It most likely just made Eve aware of the situation she was in. Which can both mean the whole concept of the garden (as many like to compare it to a "prison" where humans live mindlessly, provided with everything) AND Adam's controlling nature. And the fact that they only gave the apple to Eve makes me strongly believe that it's mostly the latter option. My personal hc kinda goes like this: Lilith ran away from Eden because she thought Adam was controlling and she had a strong enough will to go after her own head and ideals (this is why I think she herself never ate the apple, she already "gained awareness and free will" in a way by not wanting to submit). Lilith obviously disliked Adam so when she heard about Eve she wanted to give her a chance to get away from that guy too whom she believed to be controlling and just simply a dick lol. She wanted to "free" Eve from Adam because she experienced his nature (or at least, how she saw him in her own perspective, mind that we only know her story, we don't know what Adam exactly did aside of being "controlling", perhaps he was really an asshole, but maybe it's more complex). So, she asked Lucifer to help Eve and give the apple to her. Lucifer, being the idealistic dreamer he was, agreed to it, with the pure intention of helping humanity, showing them what they can be capable of and freeing them. Eve accepted and we all know how it ended. However, I love to hc that Lucifer would've included, or at least tried to include Adam too if he had the chance. Yes, perhaps they didn't like each other, but I see angel Lucifer kinda like Charlie is now, not giving up on people and trying to convince them, help them, forgive them and all. I believe he would've put up with Adam for the sake of it, but he couldn't since everything went south when Eve received the apple.
At this point it feels so much like I'm villainizing Lilith lmao but that's not my purpose actually.
It's okay anon we love villainizing Lilith in this house
Jokes aside I think that's really interesting. If I recall correctly, the little Eden flashback depicts both of them offering the apple to Eve, yes? But I think we should all agree that that story is unreliable at best and just a plain lie at worst.
It's interesting to think that Lilith was the mastermind of it all, really. If we're real, Lucifer definitely got the shortest end of that stick right? After Lilith became a demon, the story says that she just gained a lot of power while Lucifer lost his will to dream and all that, which is interesting.
To be honest I'm confused about what exactly the apple did. Bible tradition says it gave them them the knowledge of good and evil, some people think it made them aware of their nature and all that, and then Hazbin says it was how evil came into the world. I think it's kind of open to interpretation but I really want the show to tell us what the deal is in its canon.
However, I do think Lilith has a bigger hand on it than we think, I know this is just me, but GOD I WANT HER TO BE MANIPULATIVE, not even necessarily in an evil sense, I just want her to do some morally questionable things to reach the goals that she thinks are the best! In the case of the apple, it doesn't matter whether or not that was the right call, the important part is that Eve *knew* she shouldn't eat it, she SAID she wasn't allowed to eat it (at least in the biblical tradition), and Lilith, or Lucifer, or both, manipulated her and then manipulated the truth to suit their cause, even if they didn't realize what consequences that would bring.
It's a bit murky because we don't have a lot of details and I think this is something that could change depending on context. Really hope we get more info on this in the next season

now i’m curious what were ur fav MP goofs !!! :0
ok i have a 10 image limit and some of these are multi-image jokes so i’ll try to distill these as best i can. also these jokes are all from i think chapter 4 and later, where i really flourished my sense of humor more
1. marina’s high school crush/bff sharkwanda being a highly contentious contestant on a spoof of top model
this is specifically a spoof of the early seasons, which usually had an assessment within the first 2 or 3 episodes, including a weigh in. as much as i loved trashy tv, i always hated these moments so i thought it would be funny to have a literal shark and to have her be weighed against mostly average-sized humanoids because it would be ridiculous for anyone to expect a healthy shark to weigh the same amount as a human.
there were a couple other layers to this: george idolizing her as a strong, independent woman. george’s brother freaking out because sharkwanda just ate a man on camera and no one’s overly bothered by this. george chastising him for not realizing it was obviously fake/over dramatized for the ratings (and not examining that then this moment of “self empowerment” would also be fake). and then also i named her after a fish named wanda. except she’s a shark named wanda. she’s also the most beautiful and popular girl in the world and she wins her season and becomes a very successful model.
Tumblr media
2. the tinsley family thanksgiving outfits. actually their themed outfits in general. i think shit like this is super cute and funny. i also just enjoy writing siblings who rib each other lovingly.
also the part of this where george’s mom has three eyes (she’s psychic) and her dad has no eyes, so her brother has two eyes and for all intents and purposes looks human, but he is a full blooded monster. early on i had some ideas for an off shoot chapter about eli and his struggles with his identity (being a monster but not looking like one and not feeling at home in either community), but it got scrapped for time and also because it felt like too close a parallel to mixed race people who pass as white and that’s not my story to tell.
Tumblr media
3. sharkwanda’s cover (up) girl ad campaign during the superb owl half time show. some of this stuff was a bit on the nose, but there’s a line about sharkwanda finally having makeup that doesn’t melt off her face like hot cheese that i still like
Tumblr media
4. this multi-strip joke where franny’s dad pulls a turkey out of a hat. just read it there’s nothing to explain lol
Tumblr media
5. basically every part of the magic shop scene, but especially the part where percy meets franny’s dad for the first time during a very tense situation and franny’s dad is wearing a skeleton (this is a reference to ranma 1/2). and then also percy sits and there’s a whoopee cushion. it’s incredibly awkward and not exactly haha funny, but it simultaneously cuts and adds to the tension in a way that is very monsterpop.
Tumblr media
6. human!franny getting ben a dog toy as his secret santa gift (he doesn’t own a dog) and then dropping it and then it making a horrific, shrill squeak when it bounces
Tumblr media
7. the whole situation with chadler, his horrible christmas outfit, the marshmallow gun, and him taking sexy santa ben as prisoner.
Tumblr media
8. ben, killed by glitter, soon to be avenged by his crush comrade (or not)
Tumblr media
9. george being gifted a framed painting of a photo of herself, asleep during class, which she later carries into an actual museum and gets in trouble for because a guard thinks she stole a piece of art
Tumblr media
10. the brotebook
Tumblr media
this has been very long but i hope u enjoyed it

i must know.. what does fossey think about the other mercs (◕_◕)
WONDERFUL QUESTION THANK YOU KROM!! to spare everyone's dashes ill put this under a readmore but heres a few of the dynamics i have in mind... not everyone Yet but ill reblog this tomorrow with everyone i couldnt fit here. i just dont want it to be TOO too long LOL
SCOUT when scout first caught wind of miss pauling having an assistant/coworker of her own, all he initially knew was that they were from new york. like most people, he assumed the city, but unlike most he immediately assumed it would be a beautiful young woman like pauling, and that there would be Two lovely ladies for him to try and woo. ...so when he actually Met fossey, his expectations were not only not Met but just completely wrong. for a while, he didnt quite know how to interact with them, but eventually settled into a role that he never thought he would EVER get the chance to play: annoying big brother. fossey, like me, actually has an older brother back home who is... really not the best, so hes a little more hostile than one would expect when it comes to bantering with scout LOL. its all in good fun though. like they get along but if you were to witness them from a distance you'd be like Uh do these bitches hate each other?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SPY fossey doesnt like spy very much; shes pretty easy to startle, which is something spy has very little consideration for-- on the contrary, he gets a bit of joy out of their jumpy reactions. they take his little nicknames for her [i.e "ma crevette" aka "my shrimp"] as insults and dont seem to trust him much. spy certainly seems intrigued by them, but whether or not he actually cares for them is a different question. he will sometimes make cruel jokes for the express purpose of winding them up, but fossey's reactions never really seem to be what spy expects out of them. so hes a little perplexed and intrigued that he isnt reading them as well as he thinks...
Tumblr media
ENGIE being that both of them are pretty tech-savvy, and on a surface level theyre both quite amiable, they get along quite well in terms of discussing interests!! however, given engie's own interests in transhumanism and his god complex + fossey's own general disinterest in being/staying human, they... kind of arent allowed to talk to each other super often 😭 she absolutely Would offer herself to be uploaded to a computer or some shit like that and no one wants that to happen EXCEPT for those two
Tumblr media
SOLDIER as i've mentioned before, fossey is generally pretty weak compared to all the mercs [and honestly, even compared to miss pauling]. because of this, more than anything i think soldier sees them as someone he has to "protect"/look after, even in super mundane or completely nonviolent situations. not necessarily in a nurturing way so much as "OBVIOUSLY you cannot handle yourself so i will take care of this for you! maggot!" but hes being nice in his own way... he has good intentions hes just. well. soldier. he also happens to be the one most responsible for accidentally hurting them via roughhousing, since sometimes his approaches to "helping" them involve great physical violence. while this scared fossey at first now they just think its really funny

im actually gonna liveblog my own thoughts about those last few chaps of my fic, which are basically always going to be "i'm hilarious actually" but yknow. specific lines. minor spoilers ig
>be jeremy >tell rich about how you fixed the giant issue where yelling at a squip can turn off every squip in the network >by telling him this aloud, you just alerted the squips to this security flaw >mfw i destroyed the easiest way to save the world without a second thought: :) >still smilling at rich, ready for praise >rich short circuits.
plus with the shutdown that christine mentioned this chapter. it's almost like ? jeremy isn't coming at this from a perspective of wanting to turn squips off???? and never even bothered researching that option??? 😂 bonkers. who'd have thought
i fully recognize that having a coder POV say "The bugs, miraculously, became rarer and smaller" is the biggest ask in the fic in terms of suspension of disbelief. maybe when jeremy is better at this they'll realize they were wrong about that. not in a "this update is secretly a time bomb" way but in a "holy shit i can't believe i used to think this was good programming" way
i still think it's funny whenever i reference jeremy muting themself after the FIRST TIME it came up where jeremy acknowledged that "muting themself wasn't any different from a human just choosing not to speak." i love my weird robot child.
i still like the "C-c-c-c'mon, Jeremy, can't you see, we've got a date, so concentrate! We'll start with us, just me and you, some deja vu, and then ensue: your microchip plus our friendship-" implying "the squip" being sung in the same lovestruck voice as the chorus usually sings "christine."
^ i usually pick a song to write the summary from based solely on vibes and character focus. the fact that this was from Upgrade rather than two player game was a dead giveaway regarding michael's intentions btw.
writing michael after that last mall scene has been so weird. on purpose. but like everything he says is a catchy line ending on a discordant note. the sudden pivot from slowburn to joking about having sex and humanity = romance. every time michael interrupts or talks over jeremy instead of going out of his way to set a good example, i wince lol. encouraging them to stop thinking so much. ignoring every one of jeremy's soft "no"s because they're inconvenient. Here Are Our Stereotypical Nerd Spots and Here Is Your Mandated Giant Teddy Bear and Here Is My Secret Condom. (jeremy sprinted into the sunset before we got to that part and we all thank them for it.) jeremy never once having indicated that they wanted to actually have sex any time soon but michael did everything in his power to make sure the date would end that way without a single worry about what jeremy told them about chloe.
i don't think it's spoilers to clarify that michael was in the driver's seat for all of that, but was in a situation where he was very incentivized to listen to the SQUIP. and jeremy looooves squips so obviously the SQUIP is the expert on this, not michael :P
madeline offscreen: constant orgies, pretending to be from paris, scheming femme fatale madeline for the 2.3 seconds she was onscreen: i swear quebec is better than people give it credit for wait don't go-
jeremy's definition of breaking up with someone is, consistently, running away from an emotionally charged moment and convincing themself that they hate them. lol.
christine accusing jeremy of talking at her was also a direct response to the author trying to get on their wikipedia-level-of-philosophy-knowledge soapbox again. btw on that note, observation selection effect seems to only be mentioned in places as a synonym for the anthropic principle. it is more specific than how jeremy defines it, being an existential thing about how "the range of possible observations that could be made about the universe is limited by the fact that observations could happen only in a universe capable of developing intelligent life" (~ wikipedia <3). i get away with a lot of bullshit claims, some of them even intentionally bullshit, bc the character making those claims is reading even less of the wikipedia article than i am.
but that was transparently just a nod to the book being one of the many parallel universes that are foundational to how the squip works in canon
speaking of references that delight me and me alone, in-character phantom of the opera reference re: pageboy
i think all the main/supporting cast all think they're the main characters. except jeremy! not because of jeremy 1.0's insistence that he's not a leading man, but because they have been so busy with observing themself that they haven't even considered anyone else observing them and coming to different conclusions. (see: the PA system joke with michael which alerted the ENTIRE SCHOOOOooool đŸŽ¶ to their situation, which in jeremy's narrative, was just a gag as part of a longer fun flirty convo with michael, brought up for laughs and then forgotten.) (it's not like it's plot relevant as in that it doomed them or anything, but just a signal that not everyone perceives the fic events like jeremy does!!)
they're trying to learn to be less self-absorbed (and i'm not saying that as an insult so much as an accurate description of their default thought patterns) but it IS a learning curve. for all their self-reflection, i would describe them as a very reactive person, which is also probably why they (along with jeremy 1.0 and keanu squip) constantly struggle/d with needing a sense of control
im aware that despite christine's in-character criticism of the narrative i wrote 🙃 that she's here for exposition and emotional closure. she knows and she's not happy about it. it's a consequence of writing the story i wanted to tell but that doesn't make it immune from criticism. it's a good question for me, that the story i wanted to tell DID involve removing her agency so much. but i don't see that as a question that needs a direct answer or for me to defend so much as something to reflect on after it's over. in the meantime christine ma'am i'll give you something good in the epilogue i prommy, and i'll add something about this to my notes now that i think about it.

would love director’s commentary on the part of “all creatures wild and tame” where Daniel comes up to Max on the truck to ask if he’s done sex stuff —> their first hook up!!!! I love that fic sooooooo much đŸ„°đŸŠ‘
ty liza!! 🩑🩑🩑
On the drivers parade truck in Jeddah, Daniel comes to stand next to Max and says, “So have you done, like, sex stuff?” the people need to know!
Max looks around quickly, but there’s nobody near them.
“Mate, shut up,” he says anyway. i don't love the dialogue in this little section but like, Mate as like an assertion of how totally platonic he's feeling etc
“I don’t mean, like, ever,” Daniel goes on, “I know you’re a man of the world, I just –”
He wafts his arms like he’s a jellyfish or something; he’s holding a GoPro that Max really hopes is not turned on. “Do they jizz?” really important to establish a) do they jizz b) what's the slick situation
“I don’t know,” Max hisses.
“But you’ve seen porn.”
“Of course not with real –”
Max cuts himself off, frustrated, and Daniel leans in, says, “Don’t you want to find out?” BRING BACK THE PARADE TRUCK
“I don’t know why I’m surprised,” Daniel says when he comes to Max’s hotel room after the race.
Max is playing COD, two-player, two of the tentacles holding a controller between them. max gaming with the tentacles is one of the first images i thought about for this fic, along with the tentacles reaching up to the flush the toilet and opening the hotel room door to let daniel in. i think it's funny and also gestures to the kind of matter-of-fact acceptance he has in dealing with them, while at the same time not really Thinking about them/why they're there at all
“They are actually pretty good,” he says.
“Well yeah,” says Daniel. “They’re you.” daniel said max is max!
Max isn’t sure he likes that. max meanwhile is Not ready to acknowledge the way in which the tentacles are an extension of his own desires lol. He pauses the game, sets the controllers on the coffee table.
“Be honest,” he says, twisting to look up at Daniel. “Do you think I’m a freak?”
Daniel grins at him. “Not any more than I did before.”
He sits on the couch beside Max and the nearest tentacle immediately unfolds itself across his lap. very obvious!!
Daniel laughs. “Okay, maybe a little more than before.”
He runs his finger down a row of suckers; they shiver and flex in the wake of his touch. i like shiver and flex
“Freaky,” he says, smiling sideways at Max. Max is afraid to move, to breathe, in case Daniel stops touching him.
Daniel presses his finger to one of the suckers and Max can feel it, the way it wants to cling to him.
“Is this okay?”
Max nods, his fingers digging into the couch cushions. a little thing from this fic which i'm not sure really works/comes across is that max doesn't reach for/kiss daniel himself (i.e. with his arms not his tentacles) until almost the end when he fucks daniel with a tentacle and holds onto him etc - at which point the tentacles disappear bc they've served their purpose
Daniel takes a breath. “What’s it feel like,” he says. “On your dick.”
Max’s brain freezes for a moment. He looks at Daniel, uncertain, and Daniel looks right back at him, intent, a little challenging – not a joke. up to this point daniel's kind of been normalising the tentacle stuff with humour - i'm not sure the way they tip over the line here entirely works but oh well!
“I haven’t tried –” he says, and Daniel says, “I don’t believe you.” i like this beat better lol
Daniel is right, obviously.
Of course Max has thought, in bed, what it would be like. The sheets thrown back, Max’s hand on his dick, one tentacle sliding in and out of his mouth, What if it was –
“You’re hard,” Daniel says. He moves his hand as if he’s going to touch Max, then puts it back on his own thigh. even though daniel's taking the lead here there's still an element of the tentacles as excuse “You should get it out. Go on, Max.”
Max lifts his hips, scrambling to shove his pants down. He takes hold of his dick, which is hard, like Daniel said, aching.
“That’s it,” Daniel says, and Max gasps as a tentacle wraps around him, teasing at the tip where it’s already wet.
The tentacle is thicker than his dick, which is embarrassing, đŸ€ but it feels so good: the suckers; the way it twists around him, tightens.
Daniel’s staring; when he reaches out to touch just the promise of it sends Max over the edge.
Covered in Max’s come, the tentacle lifts its tip to Daniel’s mouth.
Max moans with shame, watching helplessly as Daniel opens up for it, sucks it clean, the inside of his mouth so pink and wet. the tentacles doing all the hot awful things he wants to do all the time!!
He meets Max’s eyes and Max feels the pull of it everywhere, shuddering, dick twitching like he’s going to come again.

I ask myself how the 2nd DLC starts? Is it from a distress call from this planet where the mysterious Rabbid sends a fake letter to the heroes to lure them ill and asks if Edge eats enough. That would give away of her being her older Sister and being sweet...maybe that is wishful thinking and it's more like her hating Edge for something that happened and wanting to brutally beat her little sis up. Why isn't she with the other spark hunters and fought for Cursa? Did Edge tried to kill her or did Cursa put her there? What are you thoughts on this matter?
It's really hard to guess anything at this point. We're all assuming she and Edge were created as sisters, with very good reason (your analysis among others), but we might just be making connections that the creators didn't intend. Oh don't worry, I still think it's VERY LIKELY to be the case, everything points to it, but we don't know for sure!
But just for funsies, I can theorize a bit. Maybe like Edge she has a rebellious nature, but her way of rebellion was not to confront the others directly and try to sway them like Edge did, but she simply ran away. The others don't know what happened to her, but they probably assume she got lost in space or killed, hence the statue of her being broken. But secretly she's been hiding out on a wild and isolated planet and amassing her own forces.
Why though? Well, if we go back to your theory of Mystery Hunter being like Mario and Edge being like Luigi. You know the interpretation of Luigi as always feeling he's in Mario's shadow? It's kind of an exaggerated "game theory" type of thing since in reality the brothers love and support each other, but he probably does feel it to some extent, as Mario is the "main hero" and there's a joke in the RPGs about people always forgetting Luigi's name, not knowing who he is etc (even Beep-0 does this when he first meets him!). So it's obviously something the devs have already played with. Now what if, in a reversal for the spark hunters, it was the older sibling here, the "Mario" sibling, who felt inadequate. She was the first created, but then Edge was created with the intention to be just a little better. Like Mewtwo to Mew. Stronger and with more leadership capabilities. And so Mystery (I think I've settled on a new name for what to call her lol) wants to get revenge on Edge for replacing her. Her entire mission is fueled by a rivalry with her sister that has gotten way out of control.
I like your theory for a fake letter or distress call. And maybe Cursa marooned her on purpose, as punishment for some kind of failure. However she was described as a "foe" so I don't think she'd be wanting revenge on Cursa or she would be on our side. She has to be fueled by anger towards the heroes, and it makes most sense to guess it's really just Edge in particular. It's what we can extrapolate from the two things we DO know, which is that she's no longer with the rest of the hunters, however she did not choose to become a hero either. She chose a secret third thing (rivalry and revenge!).

also i’ve definitely brought it up before but another of those things that is a pet I Hated That type of concept that might, say, manifest as like a common enough stance/interpretation via fic or smthing transformative is the idea of like, you know, jared needed to be confronted on his use of Humor until the other party like figuratively has his arm twisted and he goes “fine no joking at all i promise” like forever in that vein of like “wow um jared this is a Serious Topic i’m being Serious so stop with any of the humor / levity on your part or you’re saying you don’t think it’s A Serious Thing” &/or that if jared’s ever delivering anything jokingly it means he doesn’t have earnest feelings about the matter or think that you do either / isn’t acknowledging either of your earnest feelings at all
and of course this is like a stance that manifests anytime there’s a character who uses humor to protect themself ever in that “um no jokes or laughing please or you think this is a silly inconsequential matter, gravity & solemnity Only or you’re wronging me right now cuz that’s what i’m bringing to the table”...as opposed to this being a deh exclusive or anything
anyways it feels like an issue of both a) people just like, not able to find jared that Understandable even if they consider him sympathetic & oversimplifying his character as like, he’s just Too Damn Rude & that surface level explanation is enough of a handle on the character to write how he’d need to Be Better, which is: have another of the teens tell him to stop choosing to be so rude & jared going “you’re right you’re right” & successfully / gradually choosing less often to be rude, case closed. and b) people approaching the idea of anything out here about characters like successfully developing a relationship as being unilateral, if there’s any effort required at all. wherein like well jared’s too mean, so e.g. evan just needs to go “well i made mistakes jared but you’ve been an asshole this whole time so get appreciatively nice towards me or get outta here” and jared can go “you’re right you’re right” and become Good Enough for evan, finally.
but anyways to focus on the “hate when people just go ‘if a character jokes around they’re not taking something seriously’” like clearly a) yeah jared is like taking a more irreverant stance on things out here in general and b) sometimes he’s rude on purpose &/or sometimes things land differently than he means for them to but like this isn’t how Humor works lol And evan can & does understand what jared means even more than he lets on / can see beyond the surface of what jared’s saying, so like, speaking with jared even Partly on jared’s own terms is possible, & if you’re imagining how evan & jared might make up / improve the relationship / have a constructive conversation, it seems reasonable that evan should be willing to like, understand jared’s own way of communicating rather than demanding jared talk about anything the way he himself might talk about it. and wildly people framing A Subject humorously doesn’t even mean they don’t think it’s serious or sad or important or etc, it’s just a way of framing things, including to like, make something the speaker Knows is some real shit into something that’s easier to talk about &/or to listen to in the first place, like the eternal observation like wow many people who are funny can be like depressed & shit, & how people know putting on more of A Performance that’s Entertaining can make some sort of social moment less effort for both parties thanks to the levity / that it’s more engaging vs more of a monologue, like complaining about xyz but making it light/funny, being able to be humorous abt something that’s depressing b/c you're trying to tell other parties you’re just talking about it, not asking for their moral support by simply bringing it up. anyways, that is to say, if someone talks about a topic with some humor that doesn’t mean they don’t think it’s serious or figure there’s any emotions involved, and bringing humor into it may make communicating about it at all more feasible for them vs like, potentially impossible. that is to say it’s like, you can’t write evan getting to demand jared stop Using Humor Ever B/c This Is Real more than you can write that jared gets to demand evan stop like ever manifesting any of His defensive maneuvers either, like well stop shutting me out by giving like accommodating / people pleasing responses while internally resenting me, or i’m not talking to you lol
#can't just write evan getting to demand jared drop an entire defense mechanism entirely b/c oh jared just chooses to be a lil meanie ig...#point of Senior Teens is that they're all really similar but taking markedly different Approaches#whether it's about their defense mechanisms or efforts to connect....and obviously they're all coming up short on all fronts so like#could all pick shit up from each other / learn from everyone else's feedback/perspective on their own approach lol but also#they're all seventeen and all people in general so even if they perfectly combined their powers they wouldn't have It All Figured Out Foreve#*forever#deh#indulging in little a posts....#and i mean right off with the jared n connor fiasco lol like. guy who doesn't know / verify that the other party would Know He's Joking#combined with the guy who's most prone to take the like worst faith stance And get aggressive about it...didn't work out#but going ''jared must be solemn [pensive]'' like what are you neurotypical?#tldr basically that writing evan Getting To Demand that jared stop just joking around always(tm) or w/e and take all this Seriously and like#That supposedly being a huge issue that jared Does need to drop & he just goes ''oh ok yea :/'' is like well#that's just writing evan being an asshole...which you can do ig lol but usually not the intention if it's supposedly abt reconciliation /#the dynamic improving...and where like sure you could write evan not understanding it / thinking jared simply fails to take anything#seriously (even though canon suggests he already Gets jared beyond what he's saying about it) but then he'd have to learn he was Incorrect#jared's intention / own way of communication has to get to Matter / not simply be wrong(tm) if they're like; friends lol#and oh right like; other side of the same coin; that jared's humor Serving A Purpose and this Not being oh he just likes to be Rude & make#jokes at people's expense so no more joking Is Also Like how jared also Isn't just being funny b/c he's a silly little guy...#both inaccurate that when jared jokes it's b/c he thinks other ppl have no serious feelings Or b/c he himself has no serious feelings#so jared's like Ideal Form is not to simply get to drop memes in the chat either thanks lol

About Fluffybird, what do you think about the ship? What is your opinion and analysis about the relationships between the two?
righto heheh let's crack into these chuddy Ds--
tldr; fluffybird is the purest ship and it would be great if it became explicitly canon
first of all, I think the creators shipped fluffybird before they saw all the fanart! Duck and Red Guy's interactions even in the webseries have sweetness, and can be perceived as a suggestion of romance. Though these interactions could be platonic as well, the possibility of romance is there, and that's all any slow-burn romantic storyline starts as. maybe one day i'll list those telling moments, but that's a lot of work. lol. Back to the creator's shipping, idk, that's just speculation, but I think they easily had a fondness for red guy and duck's brand of affection for each other.
There are random moments that are just so shippy. I think these have all been pointed out by other ppl. Duck painting Red Guy as Red Guy stands like that?
Tumblr media
c'mon. The fact that they both want to be the dads? why put that idea in our heads? When red guy says his fav color is medium brown and duck's eyes are MEDIUM BROWN? I like to think that everything the creators have chosen to do is intentional and serves some kind of purpose other than comedic value... could be wrong there, but it's what I'd like to think. oftentimes the jokes have meaning behind them after all.
As for their dynamic, it is really interesting and nuanced! I don't rly see any hate between them, tho there ain't nothin wrong with liking the "divorced" dynamic. what I think is that they are made unaware of the feelings they have for each other. The 3 are constantly in a state of disorientation. I've seen people say that the fridge scene is one of the only times they get close to voicing their genuine thoughts and feelings without being controlled in some way, and I agree. however, when it comes down to it, duck displays great attachment to red guy, always looking at him for protection or initiative, wanting to be a family with him, etc. for red guy, well, we all saw what happened when duck died. he lost his damn mind, and he didn't expect to. it's like, as I said, he has feelings for duck that he isn't conscious of.
i have a bad silly theory that duck and red guy were in love and together before they became puppets or something lol. i dunno, it's possible for all we know.
now i want to address the arguments against having red guy and duck having a canon romantic relationship ((and it seems like very few people seem to have arguments! this fandom is fluffybird all over<3). it sucks, but i feel like most of these arguments are charged with homophobia or just romance shaming. romance is already present in the show, and it's all been cishet (superficially. B nice if chars came out as trans canonically? Lol). Yellow and Speshul One, Yellow and Clair. Regardless of context, romance is already present, and why does no one get upset about it? Because it's cishet, i'd argue. no one even notices it. now these are obviously satirical presentations which i thank god for, but it's still there.
we also already have tender moments between the three main guys. people might argue that 'why can't two guys just be friends?!?!' yeah, they can, and they are across 99% of media. is 99% of portrayals not enough? there is so little lgbtqia+ content that this argument is just ridiculous.
there's the argument that romance would 'ruin' the show somehow. sounds like an internalized problem to me tbh. adding romance wouldn't detract from the existing elements of friendship; it would embellish that, presenting a unique relationship that does not conform to the restrictive standards of society. (this would not be the case for a cishet romance, though I won't go into that.)
if people have a problem with fluffybird, I think they really gotta ask themselves why, really question where those feelings of discomfort are coming from. it's not like i'm asking for a nsfw scene. i think red guy and duck would have a romantic love language that is completely unique, like their confession to each other in the fridge scene. The way this show subverts tropes and makes things so weird, it would be so cool to see how it handles a genuine romance. I imagine it would be cuddly and lots of sweet words to each other, like what they do now but more explicit in that it is romantic love.
Anyway fluffybird is the purest ship I ever

Hi Allie,
When and hoe did the Louis-and-Harry-are-enemies narrative start? All I ever see is that throughout the years they never stopt sharing clothes, looking fondly at each other, etc

I wasn’t in the fandom back then, so I was really wondering how they (management I presume) set that up. Was it all through articles in the media?
All my best to you!
Hi anon, I'm so sorry this got buried in my inbox :( but I've been getting some asks similar to this one so I just thought it would be interesting to talk about that because I noticed some young fans don't fully understand that we're 100% not joking when we talk about that.
"Moral enemies"
Well.... where do I even begin lol
In 2015, there was a The Sun article written by Dan Wootton (đŸ€ąđŸ€ź) where the intention was basically "why Harry and Louis are mortal enemies and why that ended 1D" while for us it was more "why everything is a lie: for dummies". And I'm mentioning this because I think this article specifically gives a very clear perspective in terms of what narrative they were going for:
Tumblr media
I'm not copy-pasting the entire thing here but here's a few nasty parts more specifically about H&L:
"The biggest issues in the band can be traced back over three years to an irreconcilable falling-out between their two most influential members, heart-throb Harry and highly-ambitious Louis.
But by the start of 2012 they had abruptly moved out, their best friendship over, leaving them barely able to talk to each other unless for work purposes or in public.
A source close to the band revealed: “Apart from Harry and Louis, no one knows exactly what caused the falling out — they didn’t even tell the other boys the full details.
“But it was very serious and their friendship has never recovered. Everyone involved in the band is well aware of the animosity between them.
“It’s been central to everything else that came next with the band because there was suddenly a massive divide.”
Given Louis and Harry spent a long time unable to even fly in the same private jet because of the hatred between them, that’s a laughable notion. And neither is gay.
So what happened was that they moved in together to their Princess Park flat in September 2011. And by the beginning of 2012, there were already articles saying H&L were not living together anymore and that Harry was looking for his own place until he bought Erskine House in August. That was around the same time as the bullshit tweet and Haylor. So I think here was when they first started some real damage control about Larry. Also about Harry buying his public house, this is where there is all that bullshit involving living in Ben Winston's basement (they were still trying to push that like a year ago, ridiculous) which is obviously not true. Harry never "moved out" from Louis, there's an entire timeline on their living situation. And they obviously never had a fall-out in 2012 either. Please check out this amazing post: Louis and Harry in 2012: “the year their friendship ended”.
One image is worth a thousand words though, this is them in September 2012 after their huge fall-out lol
Tumblr media
And as we all know, after 2013 they started to interact less and less publicly, they were never seen alone together and all that. Fans noticed that and there was all kind of rumours about their friendship going around. And we were robbed on 1D Day when they paired all of them but H&L.
Mortal enemies in 2013
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I think it wasn't until weedgate that they were put as "enemies". It was sold the idea that Harry highly disapproved the video of Louis and Zayn and he was above all of that and they couldn't even stand flying in the same plane together.
Tumblr media
2014 was a rough year, there is a lot of theories also indicating weedgate was planned by them to try to get rid of image clauses. While Harry literally tried to come out every day that year, check my big gay war tag for that. There was clearly a lot going on behind the scenes with their label and management. And we were robbed yet again when they paired the boys for the Coca Cola commercial, everyone but Harry and Louis. While they were out there getting complementary tattoos, serenading to each other every night and all kinds of receipts going around about them sharing hotel rooms and not even trying to hide that. I believe it was around that time too that the narrative against larries became very strong and 1DHQ really started to put fans against each other pushing down everyone's throats that larries were delulu and they! were! straight! And rumours about larry stylinson was what actually made their friendship to be over.
Mortal enemies in 2014
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 2015 we saw them interact a lot, which was new. That made a lot of people question this narrative of them being enemies because they were very friendly throughout the entire promo season of MITAM. While at the same time it was being said they wrote Perfect in separate rooms lol
Mortal enemies in 2015
Tumblr media
Back to that Dan Wootton article, the narrative where Harry and Louis were basically the biggest "issue" for the band and that's what led them to "downfall" was so absurd that even Niall (Niall!!! don't-get-involved-in-anything-Niall) tweeted about how much of a blatant lie that was. Not to mention all the other dramas about the other boys he tried to push on that article, just... massive yikes.
And of course, later on, Louis talked about how they were all brothers and supportive and he also talked about how his relationship with Harry was about "mutual respect".
Lies lies lies.

I'm bored part 2
To elaborate on my theory, I released this post after a bit of confusion (maybe I shouldn't have created a puzzle game on that last one after all lol.) If you haven't seen part one, you should be able to find it on my profile.
*SPOILERS*
*NO SERIOUSLY*
Fine. Have it.
Basically, the blanks in part one reads: Blacklight is alive.
Now, before you go "what the heck you idiot we all read the part when Blacklight died -" I have a few things to point out.
First of all, as we all know, Evander Wade was described by Adrian as "suave and quick with a joke." He was the favorite of many Renegades fans (including Adrian, as we all know.) However, as you all know "suave" characters, 50% of them hide another persona. And that's where Nova's perspective comes in. She notes on multiple occasions how he is willing to sacrifice some things for others (*cough cough* Anarchists and Agent N,) loves the idea of Agent N altogether, is also shown to be cruel and cunning at some points (like when he was at Winston's neutralization and Tamaya whispered something to him - I think - and he gave that uLtImAtE vIlLiAn sMiLe,) and didn't hesitate for one second to agree to the idea of executing a gaslighted, helpless SIXTEEN YEAR OLD who is literally his friend's son's girlfriend.
Now at this point we all know he could be very capable and unhesitant to create some behind-the-scenes plans. But, to elaborate on why he could be alive, think about this: if he is so capable, if he is so cunning, then why didn't he use his powers wisely when Ace Anarchy escaped?
But if my theory is correct... then he did use them wisely.
Light can create illusions (so sorry Simon, you're not the only one who can go invisible :P) and knowing Blacklight by now, he does have some opinions and intentions that are definitely not approved by others (like executing someone's girlfriend.)
Therefore, I find it highly unrealistic that he literally died to two HANDCUFFS (or chains or whatever it was.) A couple sentences/paragraphs before his "death," he was shown to be hurling a light strobe at Ace - which I also find unrealistic (like bro you have SO much potential in your powers and THAT'S ALL YOU CAN DO?!)
ALSO, even if the Renegades are a bit of a slacking failure, I suspect that they at least considered that something could go haywire during the execution - which leads me to think that Blacklight tried to use this as an advantage somehow. Even if he was shown to love public attention and have fifty girls swarming around him everywhere he went, I suppose everyone gets tired of paparazzi some time in their life.
(But obviously he wouldn't fake his death for that purpose lol)
If you look at my argument in paragraph one, at this rate you know he wouldn't mind faking his death for a "more desirable" purpose - one that probably not EVERYONE would approve of, anyway.
Also - another thing. There was no funeral scene in Supernova, meaning *stuff* could have very well occurred behind the scenes. But anyway, we know for sure that if he did actually fake his death (hence this entire essay) the Council definitely didn't know (and would totally kill him if they found out he was alive.)
*insert scene of Tsunami getting crushed by a platform*
Anyway, I think Blacklight is alive.
Deal with it.
@fair-crimson, out.
P.S. I'm gonna develop on his family in my fanfic later on -
