#monthlyroundup I finished March with 11 books read. I read the first two books in the #Grishaverse trilogy, the last book in The Brown Sisters Trilogy, and an Anita Blake book that didn't make me want to kick puppies. I also read 3 nonfiction books including one audiobook. This week's Lit on A Quarrel of Feasts comes from my all time favorite, Mr. Henry Miller and Henry Miller: The Paris Years by the great photographer and friend to Henry Miller, Brassai (Gyula Halasz).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Henry's life lived at full volume is just as important to me as his writing. He indulged in all he could, and appreciated every single moment. This book is a look at Henry's Paris years, when he escaped poverty in NY to find poverty in Montmartme, but also a time and place where he felt filthy rich in the best of ways.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Miller was also amazed by the bistros, the zincs (cafe countertops), the charcoal, and those little masterpieces of popular art, lovingly hand drawn and displayed daily: the restaurant menus. For awhile he even collected them. They spoke not only to his eyes but to his nostrils and to his 'innards.' The names of the dishes, the cheeses, and especially the wines exerted an almost magical power over him. I went into Hungry not completely sure whether I would enjoy it or not. I love food but I wasn’t sure a memoir by Grace Dent, food critic would be compelling enough to interest me. How wrong I was. This is a wonderful memoir about Grace who grew up in Carlisle and always dreamed of big things.⁣ ⁣ As you might expect, food does play its part in the memoir - the title and Grace’s occupation may have given you a little hint there but I wasn’t prepared for the waves of nostalgia that would come over me for the staple foods of my own childhood - Findus Crispy Pancakes, Fray Bentos pies, cheese and pineapple on a cocktail stick…it was all here in glorious abundance. ⁣ ⁣ What moved me most though was the time that we spend with Grace’s family, especially her dad who in his later years suffers from dementia. At this point in her life, Grace’s career is really taking off and she spends most of her time in London however does move back and forth to help care for her father. It was the quiet moments, where she described his character as having a twinkle of the dad she remembers and loves that broke my heart the most. ⁣ ⁣ Grace is really an inspiration for any young woman who has a dream and is determined to make it happen. She is steely, independent works hard and eventually achieves everything she ever wished for. What is life without donuts. It would be a sad one, I’m sure. I never knew how much joy donuts brought me until I found Sidecar. First time I walked by this shop, I thought it was another boring coffee shop. But when I looked closer and saw rows of beautiful doughy cake with holes... I thought I was in heaven. I always knew donuts were delicious for as long as I could remember. Every Sunday, my mom made me and my siblings get up early in the morning to go to church. I was able to get through the day because I knew there would be donuts... the light at the end of the tunnel... or at the end of every morning service. Donuts light up my life and I am glad there is a place where I can get good quality donuts for a sophisticated adult that I am (sort-of). Many thanks to @bookswithscrump who reminded me how much I love @ruth.reichl memoirs and that I hadn't read her latest one. Save Me the Plums: My Gourmet Memoir documents Ruth's 10 years as editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine. Ruth's writing has a way of transporting your taste buds to every meal she describes. You want to eat what she is cooking and eating. As someone who knows nothing about high end magazines and publishing Reichl provided insights into what it took to run a magazine like Gourmet day to day. This was a quick read and people who loved her other memoirs will enjoy this one as well.
