I LOVED judging tonight at @girlscoutskyana 's #DessertsFirst! Had the best night with my girl @eurokitty13; the kind of night I will look back on when I am 90 years old and smile. :-) #girlscoutcookiesgalore #Louisville #foodiescene #lifemilestonmoments (at Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center)

Experience Cape Town’s artsy foodie scene.
As previously announced on TRU, I have recently returned from hosting the epic week long #Stellenblog campaign. A fantastic itinerary of adventure wat skrik ve niks, was put together to showcase the stunning diversity of Stellenbosch. A large emphasis of the campaign is to get travelers to understand that Stellenbosch is a great base from which to explore the neighboring surrounds. With that message in mind, our pre campaign plan included a day trip to Cape Town.
When I started to think about how I was going to write about our road trip, I quickly connected the dots between all our experiences on the day. Each excursion involved the combination of food and art. A unplanned coincidence to be sure. But with the rise of Cape Town’s art scene, as part of the pitch for Design Capital of the world 2014, it’s unsurprising to witness how this movement has holistically permeated beloved facets of the city.
Cape Town is famous for its extraordinary foodie scene and here’s 3 unique ways you can experience the meeting of two worlds; art and food, in the city.
STREET ART TOUR: with @routestreetart
We met up with our guide Juma in the East City Block, at a notable coffee joint in Buiteknkant street. Here we exchanged greetings and names before ordering some world famous coffee as well as a treat or two to take with us on our art walk. The tour starts almost immediately. On the corner across the street, Juma explains the first of @faith47′s murals scattered across the city. From here we meander from tag to tag, walking all the way from Buitkenkant, up Roeland street, through district six and back to where we met. It’s a lekker brisk walk and totally worth it. A great way to experience this side of the world on foot and to learn the stories behind these moving pieces adorned across the city. Juma is an artist himself and has worked with many of the artists who he showcases on the walk. Passionate and knowledgable, he loves to engage with you and asks your opinion on what you read from the work. This guided art walk is as invigorating as it is inspiring, it lets you in on a dazzling little secret that many people are simply shuffling past and makes you feel part of the city in a whole new way. A must experience.

HAVE LUNCH AT THE SILO HOTEL:
Cape Town’s trendiest new hotpspot is without a doubt the Granary Cafe at the Silo hotel. When entering on the ground floor you are greeted by a mesmerizing exhibition by some of Cape Town’s finest contemporary artists. And it doesn’t end there, the hotel only features contemporary South African art. Pieces that stun aesthetically and inspire contemplation, you’ll spend quite some time taking in the various art peppered across the space of the hotel. It creates a whole new dimension to the experience. Add to that designer interiors, instagram worthy spaces and views for dayz, this space is a bloggers dream. The restaurant is located on the 6th floor, an equally mesmerizing space that dazzles you with the amount of light streaming through the towering glass windows. We sat at a corner table, it boasted breathtaking views stretching from the Clock Tower to Signal Hill. The restaurants menu is compact and classic with modern flair, rest assured you won’t feel out of your depth. The food is delicious, the flavors tantalize you into incessant mmmm’s. I look forward to returning to take in more art and enjoy a decadent high tea in the beautiful green velvet booths!

DO A TASTING AT HONEST CHOCOLATE:
I still lus for this every day! This was my first time at the famous Honest Chocolate. I’m so happy I got to learn the story behind the business and be taken through the intricacies of flavors that go into each chocolate. I am honestly salivating as I recall this. The creator behind the brand, Antony, sat down to chat with us about everything from where we were all from, what we do and of course talk us through what we were tasting. We each ordered various drinks to pair with our plate of chocolate delights. I’m talking classic flat whites, lattes to something different like chocolate chai lattes. The tasting was similar to that of a wine tasting. Antony talked us through each piece in front of us, told us what it’s made up of and then encouraged us to tell him what we picked up on our palettes. I love exploring and making sense of my senses in this way. It was honestly so damn delicious. Aside from the artful craft Honest chocolate put into creating each chocolate dream, they also literally incorporate art into their work through their packaging. They worked closely with local contemporary artists, to design a cover that tells the story of the flavor profile within, in a unique way. There is just something so special about learning what goes into a beloved product, it somehow makes you feel complicit in its loveliness. I highly recommend you experience this and buy as much chocolate to take home as your wallet will allow.

Should you ever find yourself with only 24 hours to explore Cape Town or as a local you just want to experience your city in a new way, these are a few of my favorite things I’d say GO OUT AND EXPERIENCE!

New spot: De Vrije Burger
Today I finally got to eat at Stellies’s (Stellenbosch) newest burger joint De Vrije Burger by Bertus Basson. The famous Chef behind Overture, Spek n’ Bone and Bertus Basson at Spice Route Paarl has once again created another culinary great with this take-away burger spot. He’s cut all the frills and focused on big flavor with all the nostalgia of childhood foodie favorites. This is a burger joint so the only thing you can order is a burger and all the lekker sides and extra toppings that go with it.
Tumblr media
A sizeable  200g free-range beef patty that comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and double cheese for just R75 and you can order extra toppings to build the burger. We’re talking Melrose cheese (childhood throwback) biltong, smoked chilli sauce or bacon. One order of Hand-cut chips is more than enough for two people and it comes with three added flavours barbecue, cheese or peri peri. The depth of flavors in this burger hits you with every bite and each chew unlocks more deliciousness and the texture of crunching through all those lovely greens between the bun, superb!
This is Stellenbosch so go ahead and enjoy your burger with a glorious glass of wine, I went with a carafe of Chenin Blanc and added some ice (the south african way) on this blazing hot day. Added to this, the little something extra that De Vrije burger offers you is a complimentary soft serve ice cream with your order. I was worried I wouldn’t have space...I didn’t but I’m a Gimba. The ice cream cone was a refreshing, comforting and delightful end to a throughly scrumptious meal.

This is a foodie spot you will have to experience when next in Stellenbosch. The space is intimate and designed to keep business flowing in and out, so you’ll only spend about an hour here. Beat the lunch time rush by arriving after 1:30pm or you won’t find a spot to sit and this is a NO CASH restaurant, card or snap scan only. But eat here you simply must!
All opinions and photographs are my own.
