Secret santa got me thinking about how Johan was originally an orphan found wandering in the streets with no parents, and his strangeness made him an outcast in the other children in the orphanage + no one wanted to adopt him until his two fathers came around, each with a different set of skills to help orient him in the world.

I know I have him as Nyx in one fic, but thinking about how if Tamsand adopted him, it would come full circle to his origins when I first made him.

One father (a pediatrician!) was kind and taught him empathy, softness, gentleness and was patient with him, and the other was a ruthless businessman. That father taught him that the world is ugly, and he should take what he wants, but in a smart way. He also taught Johan to satiate the monsters with blood, and was his guiding hand to toe the line on being morally gray. Murder, but with good reason and proper methodology.

Soft Tamlin and morally gray Rhysand plus baby JOhan my new ROMAN EMPIRE!! and here I thought it was gonna be Wildflowers Rhysand, Masaya and Johan 😭

i've kind of taken a different... feeling on faith recently. idk. im an atheist and i've made peace with a lot of what upset me before. i think it's time to just kinda... keep going. grow a little. y'know? i want to be able to write and critique things from joy as much as from grief. im tired of living in grief. where does the mud, so slick and hard to climb, end? where does my reprieve begin? can i claw my own ladder out of the pit? can i at least make it feel like home? it's my own damn pit, man. let me fill it with vases and pots and books i loved dearly once-- let me come back around, please, without fear.

Once again, Kaveh and Alhaitham throw down at the House of Daena, their peers feverishly reading around them. Kaveh is exceptionally sleep-deprived and Alhaitham is exceptionally agreeable—it's noon and Kaveh is the first person to speak to him. Their debate has circled around to the evolution of language; to what degree is definition-shifting a natural and inevitable process vs a slow poisoning of the meaning of language altogether? There are strong arguments for either side. In classic in utramque partem fashion, he chooses a stance at random and goes all in.

Within five minutes, Kaveh's shoulders are shivering with rage. Nearby readers have looked up from their tomes to tune in. Alhaitham nods to the room. "Fascinatingly, none of our esteemed peers have chimed in to decry my position alongside you."

Kaveh explodes "THAT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE MEAN AND ATTRACTIVE! Not because you're correct!"

Eyes shift between the duo. Kaveh keeps his gaze locked on Alhaitham's, slowly turning pink. A pair of birds flits past the stained-glass windows. Birdsong follows.

Ever so slightly, Alhaitham smiles. He looks away. "True. Silence may indicate, but cannot prove, acquiesce."

Alhaitham spares his friend because he knows this is worse. Kaveh will be kicking himself for this admission all the way back to their (shared) home.
