Hey Sam!
I recently purchased a second hand bread machine, and I know you like to bake! (I got King Authur's Flour per your recommendation.) I was wondering if you have any recipes or tips and tricks for bread making? I don't have an oven in my apartment so sadly that's not an option for me 😔
Without an oven, a bread machine is a great acquisition! You can often also make rice, oatmeal, and sometimes even yogurt in a bread machine, depending on the model. If the machine didn't come with a manual, try googling for it, or googling the model name and "recipes" to see what else people have done with theirs. It's great you bought KA flour, because materials really do make the difference -- good flour and yeast are key. Freshness can matter with yeast so buy something with a long expiration date, and keep the yeast somewhere cool, dry, and dark.
For bread making, there are two main things I always think about: you are nurturing yeast, which is a living thing, and you're forming gluten (presumably, if you're not cooking gluten-free). The yeast wants to have food and be warm, so you want to use pretty warm water (most machine recipes say something very specific like 115-125F or similar, but it should be warmer than your skin and not so hot it hurts your skin, that's how I measure it). Sugar helps feed yeast, so often there will be sugar or honey in a recipe even if it's not a "sweet" bread. If you're using older yeast, adding a bit more sugar can help it work. Meanwhile, protein helps support gluten formation, so milk or milk powder are common ingredients often listed as optional but which are very helpful. If you have a stove, you can even make milk bread, which is one of the best, fluffiest kinds -- google "hokkaido milk bread" for recipes. Nearly any bread recipe that doesn't have a super long rise or need to be shaped can be made in a bread machine, but often (especially on the King Arthur site) a recipe will include special tips for adjusting it for a machine.
Specifically for bread machines, the bread can stay warm in the pan for a bit, but the longer it cools in the pan the more likely it is to form condensation, which leads to moisture on the surface of the crust in contact with the metal. That dries out pretty quickly if you leave it out for a bit, but moisture reduces the shelf life of homemade bread a LOT (moisture feeds mold). Your best bet is to remove the bread as soon as it's cool enough to handle -- it used to be the hardest part of making machine bread was getting it out of the damn pan, but they may have gotten better since I had one -- and wrap it in a tea towel or leave it out to cool completely before putting it in a package of some kind. I used to keep mine in the fridge because without preservatives it can mold quickly. These days most breads I bake included a few spoonfuls of King Arthur Bread and Cake Enhancer, which is a mild preservative and worth every penny -- it makes the bread softer, with better crumb, and it stays good for longer. There are other brands you can get cheaper on amazon, probably, but I've only ever used KA so I can't speak to their efficacy. It's generally not sold in stores.
Okay, two last things: one, I always put the bread machine on the floor when I was making bread in it, because it rocks back and forth a bit when kneading and I have had machines "walk" off the counter before. The floor or a wide table are best. Two, bread is difficult and even a machine for making it isn't perfect, so you may fail when you first start out. Even if you don't fail the first time, you may not get a good loaf at some point, and that's the nature of yeasted breads. Don't take it personally -- and don't give up! After a while, you start to notice if something seems "off" but it takes time to learn that sense.
Happy baking! I hope it goes well for you.

"Remembrance of things past is not necessarily the remembrance of things as they were." - Marcel Proust
"I swear I'm not making it up," you say as you turn the coffee machine on. "I felt eyes on me last night. Like someone was watching me. Like someone was in my apartment. I don't know. Maybe I'm going crazy."
"Was anything missing from your apartment?" JJ asks over FaceTime.
"No."
"Maybe you just had a bad dream or something."
"Yeah, maybe." Spencer walks into the kitchen as he finishes tying his tie, and he walks over to the coffee maker. He looks at your phone propped up against the flour container and smiles when he sees JJ. "Hey, Spence."
"JJ! It's good to see you."
"I miss all of you."
"We miss you, too." Spencer pours himself a cup to go before kissing you briefly. "I'll see you at work, okay?"
"Okay," you nod.
Spencer loves to get to work early when he can while you like to take your time in the morning and enjoy it before heading out.
"So, this mysterious person... Is there any energy left behind?"
"No or none that I'm seeing."
"I thought you saw them all."
"No, not everyone. I barely notice Spencer's. I don't notice half the team's anymore. I guess the ones that I've gotten to know personally, I don't see anymore."
"Hmm, I'm sure it's nothing."
You grab the coffee pot and pour what's left into your thermos so you can take it to work even though you know Spencer will have a cup waiting for you on your desk.
"So, are you excited for your new job?" you grin.
"It's going to be new, that's for sure."
"You're going to do great. Seriously, you're really valuable."
"Thank you. Listen, I have to get Henry ready before my meeting with the Pentagon."
"Give Henry my love. Oh, and JJ?" She looks at you through the tiny iPhone screen. "I'm proud of you."
"I'm proud of you," she smiles back.
You two hang up and you finish getting ready for work. You grab your purse and open the front door but frown when you see a package sitting at your front door. Was this always here? When did it get here? Who dropped it off? Spencer would have noticed a package when he left so it had to have come after he left. Why didn't anyone knock on the door?
You set your purse and thermos on the small table near the door and pick up the box to inspect it. There is no label or anything on it indicating who it's for but curiosity gets the better of you. You only realize how stupid of you it is to pick up an unmarked box when you hear something click inside of it. Rhythmic and steady beeping comes from inside the box and your entire body is paralyzed in fear.
Someone sent you a bomb in a box and you're holding it. Any slight movement will cause it to go off, killing you and potentially everyone else in this building. You have both hands underneath the box so you can't lean over and grab your purse which has your phone in it.
"Siri!" you yell loud enough for your phone to hear. "Hey, Siri!"
No response comes from her. You must be too far for her to hear. You're forced to wait until someone comes to your rescue, and you let tears fall at the many possibilities this can have.
After making a cup of coffee for you, he expected you to be at your desk. Since you're not, he takes the cup to the briefing room, passing by JJ's empty office. He pauses by the door and sees Penelope already inside of it. This is the first day since JJ left and not everyone is ready to do this without her.
"I miss her, Penelope sighs.
"Me too."
Penelope removes the nameplate from the door and heads back to her cave while Spencer walks into the briefing room. He sets the coffee on the desk where your spot is and takes his seat. Derek and Emily walk into the room with Derek nose-deep in his phone. He chuckles at a text he gets and sits down.
"Is that Ellie again?" Emily asks.
"She texts me every morning on her way to school."
"How is she doing?"
"She's already got herself a bff named Jill, and she thinks she wants to play soccer."
"She's adjusting. That's good."
The rest of the team walks in to start the briefing, and Hotch looks at your empty seat. Rossi isn't here since he is on vacation.
"Where's Y/N?"
"She should have been here by now," Spencer frowns. "Probably morning traffic. She'll be here shortly."
"Alright, we can't wait for her. Let's get started." Hotch hands out files to everyone. "The body of twenty-five-year-old Jenny Delilly was found yesterday in Bristol, Virginia. She had been tortured, sodomized, and electrocuted before being forced to make a goodbye call to her parents. Her body was then dumped off Elden Street. A week ago, the body of Kara Kirkland was found in the same area having suffered identical injuries."
"This reminds me of the Butcher case," Derek says.
"Why does that name sound familiar to me?"
"The Butcher was a sexual sadist who killed twenty women in the same area of Virginia from 1984 to 1993 and then vanished. He tortured blond women in their twenties who lived in or near Bristol."
"That was one of Rossi's old cases, wasn't it?" Emily asks.
"Yes."
"Does he know?" Rossi walks into the briefing room holding an opened box in his hands. "Some vacation. Did you get any sun?"
"I never got any anything."
"Do you think the Butcher's back?"
"I doubt it. We profiled him as a white male in his late forties back then. He'd be in his seventies by now."
"Didn't you almost catch him?"
"In the spring of '93, we narrowed the geographical profile. We alerted every blonde in their mid-twenties in Bristol and the surrounding counties. The pressure got so intense that the killings just stopped," Rossi sighs.
"Well, the Copelands killed into their seventies. This could be him coming back," Spencer suggests.
"It's probably a copycat. If he's emulating the Butcher, he could just be getting started. Alright, let's go over victimology."
"Both Jenny Delilly and Kara Kirkman were single professional women. Jenny had just gotten a job as a web designer, and Kara worked for a nonprofit. Each woman was taken from a populated area with no witnesses. Jenny from a crowded drugstore parking lot and Kara from the back patio of a ground-floor apartment when her roommate went inside to answer the phone."
"Why not take the roommate?" Derek asks.
"She's brunette. He prefers blondes."
"These vics were forced to make phone calls. Jenny left a message and Kara spoke with her fiancé."
"Garcia, were you able to trace the calls?" Hotch asks.
"My pretties, they're using disposable cells so I'm coming up empty."
"We do have a timeline, though. According to the ME's report, both victims were dead for about three hours before they were found which means based on the times of their messages, they endured five additional hours of torture after making their goodbye calls."
"It wasn't enough that he caused his victims pain and suffering, it extended to their parents as well?" Spencer wonders. "Rossi, were the phone calls the Butcher made his victims leave similar?"
"Yeah, but the content varied. Thirteen vics left answering machine messages for loved ones, five actually talked to someone before they died, and two reached no one."
"Didn't the Butcher make his victims end their messages by saying they were enjoying it?"
"That was his signature."
"Wouldn't that make a sadist flaccid?" Derek asks.
"It wasn't about him. It was about the parents. He wanted to make sure that they knew he had complete control and dominance over their daughters," Rossi shrugs.
"Alright, Morgan and Prentiss, go to the ME. We need to compare the ritual and MO. Rossi, Reid, and I will interview the families and go over the messages. Reid, where's Y/N?"
Spencer frowns at your absence and takes out his phone to call you. It rings six times before going to voicemail, and the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He tries you once more but the same thing happens again.
"Something's wrong. I need to go home. We'll drive up together once I figure out what's going on. It's only a thirty-minute drive to Bristow."
"Okay. Keep me informed."
Spencer is out of his seat before Hotch can finish speaking. Spencer races home and practically sprints up the stairs to your apartment.
"Y/N?" he calls out.
"Spencer," you cry. He steps off the top stair and pauses when he sees the brown box in your hands. You're trying hard not to shake and sweat is rolling down your forehead. "Don't come near me."
"What's going on?"
"I think this is a bomb. There's something ticking in here."
Spencer's eyes widen in concern. "Don't move. I'll call it in." He takes out his phone and calls the head of the bomb squad. Yes, he's been in enough situations to have him in his contacts. He quickly explains the situation to the man who says he'd be right over with his team. He dials Hotch next and keeps a close eye on you. "Hotch, we have a problem."
"Is Y/N okay?"
"She thinks someone sent a bomb to our house. She's standing in the doorway holding a brown box terrified. I don't know much more about it but I'll let you know when I do."
"Is the bomb squad on the way?" Rossi asks.
They must be in the car and the call went through Bluetooth.
"Yeah."
"Should we turn around?"
"No, you keep working the case. I'll be right here with her. As long as she doesn't move, she'll be fine."
"Please be careful and call when you know more."
"Of course." Spencer hangs up and looks at you. "It's going to be okay, Y/N. You're going to be okay. The bomb squad is on the way. Just try not to move."
"I'll try," you cry, trying to keep yourself from shaking.
The whole team is worried about you and Spencer but they have a job to do. They get to Bristow and meet with Detective Green who is eager for their arrival.
"This isn't the Butcher, believe me. Unless the Butcher is Jack Lalanne, this is a younger copycat."
"We need a room with a whiteboard, a window, and six chairs," Rossi says. "The bodies were left in the exact same location."
"Everybody knew the details of this case. The paper even printed part of the answering machine messages. It's a copycat."
"Have you been able to step up police presence on Elden Street?" Hotch asks.
"It's a seven-mile stretch that runs through the city. I've done what I could considering our budget."
"Are detectives Clemmons, Benton, and Gallagher still here? They worked on the first case," Rossi says.
"Clemmons and Benton both died two years ago. Gallagher retired from the force when his wife was killed at the Pentagon on 9/11."
"So, you're the lead detective on this?"
"Unfortunately. Look, the families of the victims should be here any minute. If there's anything I can do to help you guys, let me know."
"Thank you."
Both victims were assaulted with an electrified object based on the burn wounds that could have been by a curling iron, poker, or some other object. Both also have lacerations on their bodies with slight ones near the throat and deep ones on the chest. Whoever did this used multiple knives. The unsub was creative. There are also contusions on the backs of their heads likely sustained during the abduction.
It's a slightly different approach than the Butcher's abductions. Based on Rossi's profile, the Butcher was a smooth-talker who lured his victims without initial physical force. Clearly, this unsub doesn't have the same confidence or finesse. He's sloppy.
Derek and Emily head to the place where Jenny was taken and watch the security footage to understand what might have happened.
"Alright, this is right where she parked her car," Derek points to the empty parking spot, "and then she rushed in there to get a prescription. Then, she comes back to her car and somebody gets her attention."
"They call out to her. She throws her stuff in the trunk and runs off that way," Emily points, "and that's when we lose her. So, how do you snatch someone from here? Push her into a car?"
"It's way too crowded, but there is a blind spot right there. There's enough of an obstruction here to park your car, blitz her from behind, and then push her into the vehicle. Could you do that alone?" Derek asks.
"I doubt it. Two people would explain how the first victim was abducted so quickly from the patio when her roommate went in to get the phone."
"It would also shed light on the ME's findings. There wasn't one unsub with two knives, it was two unsubs with their own weapons."
Derek turns off the iPad and looks around the parking lot with a sigh.
"I'm worried about Y/N."
"Me too." Emily takes out her phone and calls Spencer. "Hey, Reid, is there an update?"
"The bomb squad is here and they evacuated everyone out of the building including me. I hate waiting knowing she's up in there terrified out of her mind."
"She's going to be okay. You have to believe that."
"Yeah, I know," he sighs.
"Keep us informed."
Spencer looks up at the building in wonder and wishes you're doing okay.

Baking Cookies With Natalie Scatorccio Headcanons
This is for you @lacyscabinet
Nat's such a good cook and I maintain this stance
However
She's very type A in the kitchen
So yall are making two different batches of cookies. She cannot have you messing with hers
"That butter is NOT soft" "so" "y/n please" "my cookies my problem" *insert Italian cursing*
And if you're THAT BAD at cooking/baking and you get the little break and bake packages she thinks it's sacrilege
Like she's glaring at you the whole time
"Those aren't real cookies" "you don't have to eat them"
However when you inevitably fuck up your cookies she's standing behind you, head resting on your shoulder telling you how to fix them
Like taking your hands and stirring with them type deal
She also like takes a bit of the dough and feeds it to you
And then you kiss her because "she should be able to taste it too"
Then you just make out for a second (more like 10 minutes)
You smear flour across her cheek after your little make out break
And an entire food fight ensues
"IT WAS A JOKE NAT IM SORRY" "y/n I'm actually going insane right now" "Nat please" "we're never doing this again"
While the cookies are baking yall clean up the mess you made
When you get here out they're obviously perfect
"See what did I tell you" "okay Nat. Ego much?"
After you put yours in the oven you have a little dance party
Like thinking Hozier and Florence and the Machine (your choice) or that bitch plays the fucking Cranberries like it's her life's mission (same though)
When the timer goes off and you get your cookies out they're somehow burnt even though you put them in for the time it said to
She makes fun of you for like 10 minutes
But after she's done she's like "sorry babe"
In conclusion I need this to happen to me thanks

okay okay yes chef sanji is wonderful but baker sanji. confectioner sanji. think about it.
sanji kneading dough on a saturday morning with his shirtsleeves rolled up to the elbow. he has flour on his cheeks and one of those cute canvas aprons the colour of a brown paper bag with a million pockets and he keeps getting pissed off because strands of his bangs are constantly falling into his face. he makes sourdough and cheesecake and strawberry pavlova and tangerine tarts and dried mango nougat and carrot cupcakes that everybody eyed suspiciously before they actually tried them and now they're a friend group favourite.
he makes monthly batches of those agar-agar edible crystals for vivi's entire family and ships them by the crate to alabasta. he bakes robin and franky's blue raspberry black forest wedding cake. all of the straw hats have multiple packets of his dark chocolate dried fruit and nut and oat yoghurt brittle in their bags at any one time because they're the perfect snack and they're delicious. he makes red bean matcha mochi for zoro because the mosshead can't tolerate anything too sweet.
he has jar upon jar of aromatic infusions on the shelf: vanilla, black pepper, florals, all steeped in liquor to make high-quality extracts that he has gotten MULTIPLE offers to start a business out of, but he always declines because hello. he's busy cooking for straw hats and co.. luffy and fam. he has no time he is a busy busy man and would you look at that chopper's upside-down apple crumble is ready.
usopp makes him all sorts of contraptions, a high-speed blender, a state-of-the-art stand mixer, an ice-cream machine; sometimes if he's feeling lazy he'll go equipment shopping with sanji and just modify whatever they buy. sanji has a toffee hook on the wall of the galley and a very formidable collection of cookie cutters and piping tips. he's managed to make fondant that doesn't taste like utter trash and it's legendary. his salted caramel cashew macadamia popcorn has and will continue to make grown men cry.
but sometimes, he just chucks some charcoal in a pot and plops it in the middle of the dining table with a bowl of chocolate on top and brings out the fruit skewers, or the marshmallows and graham crackers. sometimes they eat rice krispy treats out of the packaging as they huddle together on the lawn and stargaze just because they can. sometimes the almond and dried cranberry combo just can't be beat and sometimes plain toast with butter makes you see god. but you'd best believe the next day he's up and at it again; his sourdough starter's looking more and more like a sentient life form by the hour and he has seven different things going on at once with two more bowls cooling off in the fridge and the oven preheating. i love baker confectioner sanji.

"I cannot WAIT until Konrad comes back from the West with some real coffee..."
As usual, history / headcanon notes are under the cut!
History notes:
Coffee was very popular in East Germany and an average of 3.3 billion East German marks were spent on it each year. But there was a shortage in 1976, resulting in the production of cheaper coffee brands called Mischkaffee, which was a combination of 50% coffee and 50% filler - Usually pea flour or malt. This was pretty unpopular though, as the pea flour was prone to clogging and ultimately destroying coffee machines.
Another way to get genuine coffee was through Westpakets - Care packages sent by Western citizens to their relatives in the East. Common items to include in a Westpaket were clothes, bedding, nylon stockings, baking supplies, and of course, coffee. West German currency was prohibited, along with cassettes, medicine, newspapers, and military themed toys.
In exchange, families on the East side of the wall sent back Ostpakets. This package often included food, spirits, confections (including Stollen, a popular holiday bread) and handicrafts. Exchanging packages was an important way for families to keep contact in spite of the wall.
Headcanon notes:
As the representative of Berlin, Konrad is one of the few in his family that's allowed to travel between the East and the West. He always comes back with gifts for his family after his trip, usually containing goods that they can't get in the East. He has also smuggled in more than his fair share of contraband items.

Seoul Milk's "Be Careful with Hand Movements When Opening Yogurt”
Seoul Milk has come under criticism after it was revealed that the company posted a notice asking influencers promoting its new product to "avoid using controversial hand gestures" when opening yogurt containers. Netizens claimed that the "hand gesture" Seoul Milk referred to was the 'pinching gesture (🤏),' which some believe is ‘intentionally used to mock a specific male body part’. They argued that it makes no sense to forbid such a natural and unavoidable movement.
According to a report by The Hankyoreh on the 6th, Seoul Milk recently recruited influencers to promote its new product, "Seoul Milk's Rich Greek Yogurt Soft." One of the promo guidelines instructed influencers to "be cautious of using controversial hand movements when opening the yogurt lid or holding the packaging." This came to light after one influencer made a post about it on social media, which quickly gained attention.
One netizen commented, "Is opening the lid with your fingers really considered a hate expression against men? Why do ordinary people have to be scrutinized for every little action?" Another wrote, "How should I open the yogurt lid then? With my middle finger or by gripping it with my fist?"
Seoul Milk's instructions for influencers have been criticized as excessive, with some accusing the company of censoring even the most mundane hand movements in response to certain men's claims that the 'pinching gesture' symbolizes misandry.
Kim Yuri, the head of the National Women’s Labor Union, told The Hankyoreh in a call, "The company's directive, which forbids a hand gesture that ordinary consumers wouldn't even consider intentional, is irrational." She added, "I worry that Seoul Milk is only incorporating biased messages into its marketing strategy."
As the controversy grew, Seoul Milk said in a call with The Hankyoreh on the same day, "We presented guidelines to block social controversy and focus attention on the product itself," and "We deleted the controversial phrase and revised it on the afternoon of the 5th."
Despite these explanations, public criticism has not subsided. This is not the first time Seoul Milk has been accused of misogynistic promotion, and some netizens are saying they will boycott the company.
In 2021, Seoul Milk faced backlash after releasing a promotional video on their YouTube channel that compared women to dairy cows. The 52-second video featured a woman in white drinking water from a leaf, only to transform into a cow after being startled by a man with a camera.
At the time, netizens criticized the ad for likening women to cows and including scenes reminiscent of illegal filming: "How could such a backwards video be aired in this day and age?" Seoul Milk later issued an apology, saying, "We sincerely apologize to all consumers who felt uncomfortable with the advertisement," and "We will pay more careful attention to prevent similar problems from occurring in the future."
In 2003, Seoul Milk staged a performance in front of the public and journalists, where three naked women were covered in flour and sprayed with yogurt. Four Seoul Milk employees, including the marketing director, were later fined by the court for public indecency.

Just saying but when Goldie disappeared the first time, the (pre-corrupted) ancients didn't mind at first because she became a shut in for the past few months until it started getting worrisome. She wouldn't answer the letters Eternal Sugar sent her anymore, Silent Salt and Mystic Flour wouldn't find her strolling about in her favorite places anymore. Burning Spice, though his interactions with her are slim, he never saw her anywhere or interacting with other cookies. The final nail in the coffin happened once Shadow Milk knocked on the door... Only for nothing to answer. The door to her workshop opens eerily... It's empty, devoid of life that thrived within the toys and dolls she used to make... Her equipment haphazardly tossed aside and abandoned... Dust hanging still in the air as it hadn't been cleaned in years, her books of research and design untidy and strawn about her work desk.
A few months go by... They've practically given up. Shadow Milk claims he hasn't, but he's closing in on that line. It's like Golden Butter disappeared without a trace, but there has to be a clue indicating what happened to her, right? Dead or alive? Kidnapped? What happened to her dolls? He'll take any answer for disclosure... He needs to know.
So he wanders back to explore and look into the one place he hadn't checked thoroughly yet. Her workshop. It used to be a simple toy store until Goldie had decided to rebrand into robots and machines. She was always so frustrated that they weren't good enough even if they seemed to work flawlessly in his eyes... She was always so busy then... Yet she always had time for him and everyone else...
As he goes through boxes of either melted scrap metal and old porcelain doll parts, he wonders if Goldie would have minded him going through her stuff without permission... She never liked people going into the storage room after all. But... She's not here anymore, is she?
He's frustrated to say the least... She always had time to listen to him when he needed to de-stress... She was always here for him, even if she wasn't seen as relevant as the other ancients... So why wasn't he here when she needed him?!
In anger, he knocks over a stack of boxes, the contents of the cardboard containers spilling everywhere, packing peanuts and bubble wrap sprawled everywhere on the floor in a chaotic matter... Bolts and nuts shimmering in the faint moonlight that illuminated the dark room through the small skylight window... Shadow Milk, distraught by his own actions, already goes to fix the mess he's made from his tantrum... But something catches his eye... There, on a small stool beneath the window, is a small, glowing, golden box. Intricate patterns carved upon its exterior, magic almost radiating off of it...
Huh, wasn't that the box Goldie was working on weeks ago?
He walks closer to it, mesmerized. A jack in the box, maybe? It has a little crank attached to it.
His body slides down the wall, the moonlight shining down in him as he cradles the small box in his arms as he sits amongst metal scraps and package stuffing, staring down curiously at it. His hand slowly wanders to the crank, winding it a bit before letting go... And soon, he hears an all too familar lullaby. Faint, but it's enough to bring tears to his eyes...
As soon as the music stops... It slowly opens... And suddenly his surroundings are obscured by the bright glowing light within the box as a vortex literally sucks him inside.
Welcome to the Toybox Realm, Shadow Milk Cookie.
ANON, ANON I AM LOOKING AT YOU SO HARD RN/VPOS
I love this idea, Shadow Milk first finding the toy box inside of one of Goldie's old workshops... I also imagine that he makes a shrine/sancutuary sort of place for it in the woods so it can be kept safe from people who would want to steal or destroy Goldie's Creations(eventually also from him and the other beasts). Well, once he gets out of the toybox that is.
As for how his first visit goes...
....
AU Ficlet #3 - 💔
" ... huh?"
Those were his first words upon the sight of this new, almost toy-like world displayed before him. This, this wasn't real... right? Did that song put him to sleep? There was no way he'd been sucked into that box... and yet, he knew that that was the case.
But... how? Curiosity nagged at him, telling him to explore and discover all that he could about this peculiar, strange world. And yet, he'd already invaded Golden Butter Cookie's privacy by going through her workshop, would this be going to far? The box itself had screamed that it was made by Golden Butter Cookie, well, not literally but you get what he means.
But, of course, Curiosity killed the cat, and Shadow Milk was said cat. So he wandered forth through what seemed to be the buds of a town, taking a moment to take in how... yellow everything was. Of course there were other colors, but yellow was the dominant one. It was quite odd to walk through such a town without seeing a single cookie although...
But, he didn't have to wait long to see something.
" Intruder discovered!" A squeaky voice shrieked, causing Shadow Milk to whip around in surprise to come face to face with... a doll? A cookie? he... couldn't really tell what it was, but it was pointing at him, menacingly. " Defense Doll Squadron, initiate containment measures!"
What the hell does containment measures mean-
He quickly got to find out what that meant when an entire legion of dolls( cookies? he still couldn't really tell but they felt like dolls) tackled him to the ground. He hit the floor with a grunt, squirming under the surprisingly formidable force of the dolls.
" Augh! Get... off of me!" He yelped, rather helpless against them. It wasn't that he couldn't free himself, rather, he didn't want to tear the dolls. He could tell that Golden Butter Cookie had made them.
It would be rather rude to hurt what she'd made, no? So he was rather helpless here.
" Thyme, please tell your squadron to lay off the intruder." A voice cut through the struggle, a painfully familiar voice. The dolls clamored off of him, all with a resounding ' yes mistress!' preceding their exit. He struggled still to lift his gaze, gazing into the familiar face of someone unfamiliar.
" Golden... Butter Cookie?" Shadow Milk began cautiously, looking at the unfamiliar sight before him. Golden Butter's eyes looked... dull, and she changed out her light and fun more Magical Girl-esque outfit for something more... sophisticated yet burnt. It also looked like her hair had melted a bit as well, yet her hat remained the same... mostly. " Is that... really you?"
Golden Butter Hesitated, he couldn't tell what exactly she was feeling behind the dull expression she was showing. He could see a sadness within her though, some kind of... despair he couldn't imagine. " ... Shadow Milk Cookie..." She murmured out, almost in disbelief.
" Where have you been?" He immediately question her with concern after picking himself up. " Have you been here this entire time? We've all been worried about you! You stopped responding to Eternal Sugar's letters, Silent Salt and Mystic Flour never saw you around your favorite places- you just... disappeared!" He exclaimed, his voice taking upon a worried tone.
She didn't say anything, just a simple nod of her head as she turned away. " I was worried about you too, you know?" He said to her, a frown upon his lips as he stared at her form. He noticed a certain... tiredness in the way she held herself, lacking the energy she once showed prior to her disappearance. She'd always seemed so bright, her smile shimmering like the golden sunlight as she enthusiastically talked about her creations.
And yet, that light seems to have dimmed. How could he have not noticed before? Had he been too ignorant? Too self-absorbed? He couldn't deny he'd been occupying himself with his works lately but...
but...

Mikey and you had decided to bake cookies, which you had never done before. You had actually never baked anything before, and you weren’t exactly an ace in the kitchen. So he was more than happy to teach you. He even had the recipe book open on the counter so you could check the instructions with him. After all, how hard could it be?
“First things first” Mikey says, as you both finish tying your aprons. “We need to measure all the ingredients.”
And that’s when disaster already hit.
You had never really handled flour before, so you flipped the package over with a little too much force, causing a lot of flour to spill onto the counter instead of into the measuring cup. Mikey was quick to tell you it wasn’t a big deal, and wiped the surface with a damp cloth, instructing you to either go slower or use a big spoon to get the powder out bit by bit.
After the dry ingredients were all measured and standing on the counter in their individual bowls, it was time to mix them up. You remembered Mikey mentioning that the dry and the wet ingredients had to be mixed separately first before combining them. So you grab the sugar and are about to pour it into the flour, when Mikey stops you.
“It’s actually better to mix up the sugar with the butter” he points out. “It makes the butter fluffier.”
Now you’re even more confused; how would that even work?
Following the turtle’s instructions, you first mashed up the butter with a fork, then put that and the sugar into the stand mixer. You turned on the machine, but the dials were opposite of how you thought, so you set it to the maximum speed. That not only almost broke the mixer, but it also sent the bowl and its contents flying. You sheepishly cleaned up the mess and measured out more sugar, while Mikey told you not to worry about it for the second time that day.
When the butter was all mixed with the sugar, it was time to add the eggs. You were about to reach out for one when Mikey stepped in and said he’d do it himself. Fidgeting with a spoon in your hands, you watched as he skillfully cracked them open, the yolk and whites falling into the bowl in an almost elegant way that you felt was intended to mock you. He didn’t get a single eggshell piece into the batter either.
After mixing everything together (now that you knew how to properly operate the stand mixer), Mikey handed you a little bottle that read “vanilla extract”. You opened the bottle, giving it a sniff, and hummed in delight at how good that smelled.
“Hey, look at me” Mikey suddenly said in a serious tone, grabbing you by the shoulders. “One tablespoon, not more. You understand? Just a couple of drops is all it takes.”
You nodded and did as he said, adding only a small spoonful of the thick liquid to the batter. After closing the bottle, you looked at the spoon for probably a second too long, because Mikey snatched it from your hand.
“You don’t want to lick that, trust me” he said with a chuckle. “You’ll regret it.”
You narrowed your eyes at him. It smelled so wonderful! Of course you wanted to lick it. It surely tasted just as good right?
But your plan couldn't come to fruition as Mikey was already starting the next step. He added some chocolate chips, mixed it a little more, then sifted the flour into the batter. He first folded it in with a wooden spatula, then with his hands.
Taking out the dough, he skillfully kneaded it on the counter, and you wondered how many times he had done this before, he clearly knew what he was doing. With the rolling pin he flattened it all to a cookie-worthy thickness and stepped aside to make place for you.
“Would you do the honours?” he asked, handing you a container with several cookie cutters.
You squealed in glee at all the cute designs, and chose one in the shape of a sea turtle. Surely this was the easiest, impossible-to-mess-up part, right?
Mikey first observed you with happiness, content that he could teach you something new. But with every passing second, his expression turned to horrified confusion. Somehow, and he still couldn’t understand how, every single piece of dough you had cut out, came out looking like anything other than a turtle. Even when you switched to the regular circular cookie cutter, the cookies you were scooping up from the counter looked like disfigured sad little blobs. Before he could stop himself, he mumbled under his breath.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone screw something up that fast before.”
He regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth. You gasped, giving him a hurt look, then looking back at your handiwork in front of you, and you pouted: he was absolutely right.
“But hey, we came this far!” Mikey tried to comfort you. “They don’t have to look perfect, as long as they taste good; that just means they’re homemade! All that’s left is to bake them.”
So you did, except that you forgot to set the timer for the cookies in the oven while you were cleaning up the kitchen. You both got distracted talking about a game, and as you were taking out your phone to show it to him, he sniffed the air.
“Say, how much longer on the timer?” Mikey asked and craned his neck over your shoulder to look at the oven in horror.
“Whoops” is all that you managed to answer, before you both rushed to save whatever you could of your precious baked goods. Mikey quickly slipped the oven mitts over his hands and opened the glass door, a concerning cloud of smoke erupting from behind it. Taking the baking tray and placing it on the stove, you both stood silently before it, staring at the practically carbonised little blobs on it.
“Hey, it’s fine~” Mikey suddenly said, one arm over your shoulder while his other reached out to grab a cookie. You couldn’t stop him in time, as he had already popped one in his mouth. The crunching that came from his chewing mouth was as concerning as it was horrifying. You could only watch in shock as he actually gulped it down.
“Hmm” he sighed, rubbing his chin in thought. “Do you take constructive criticism?”
“Not without crying” you answered, and your shoulders slumped. How could you mess this up so badly?
Mikey chuckled and pulled you in for a hug, giving your cheek a little peck, which made you feel a little better. He then suggested making a new batch, but this time he made sure to give you more detailed instructions and guide you through every step. That new batch actually turned out really well, and you enjoyed your well-deserved prize with some hot chocolate.
– – –
Bonus:
You were sitting at the table with the rest of the turtles, all eating your cookies and complimenting you on how good they had turned out, when you remembered something. Excusing yourself for a second to go get more hot chocolate, you stepped back into the kitchen, and reached for the vanilla extract bottle. You gave it another whiff, enjoying the smell, and poured some drops onto a spoon. As soon as you put it in your mouth however, you immediately regretted it. Mikey was right: this tasted awful. Going “Ew! How?!” followed by coughing, you heard a laugh from the other room, and Mikey’s voice: “I told you so!”
