@deckdancer and I were conversing this evening, and he had this question about mass farming practices. My response ended up being a little lengthier than I anticipated, but I was also trying to be concise (which is hard for John the Verbose, lol)
I've been having a lot of thoughts about plants and mass farming practices tonight, and while I know horticulture isn't exactly your specialty, I wanted to hear your thoughts on the disconnect between the symbiosis of nature vs the mass farming practices we use today, and their effects on us today as a society?
One thing I've noticed over the last 10 years is how stressed the corn fields look when we've had year after year of drought conditions. The leaves curl along the edges and look like dessicated spears. Corn is a huge water hog, and an inefficient hog at that. Most of the water is ultimately lost to evapotranspiration meaning the water table doesn't even recharge at all from irrigation.
So much of that corn goes to ethanol plants and livestock feed, so it still has a high demand, but many of the crops just die or are stunted before they can be used. Before irrigation technology was widespread, places like Minnesota grew more wheat. Minneapolis was (and still is) where so many big flour mills are, but now the wheat grain comes in from the high plains. Wheat is what we should be growing for our climate already, but corn became popular because of irrigation. Wheat uses much less water, and some cultivars can be harvested twice a year.
Factory farming of corn has changed noticeably in my own lifetime. I remember the rows used to be a bit farther apart. You could run between the rows and pretend to be the "children of the corn." My dad said he could remember when he was younger there were much wider gaps in the rows of cornfields. We've bred them for higher yield and to be planted closer together that both of those factors mean they need much more water than they used to. Some farmers plant rows so close together you almost can't walk between them now.
A lack of diversification is also a problem as well. The past three years have been really bad for corn, but for many farmers, it's their cash crop. Soy beans have become a novelty... alfalfa a rarity... and I'm shocked if I ever see any wheat at all. Monoculture crops (even beyond grains) are begging for any one-off minor catastrophe to jeopardize the whole crop. If a plant disease or infestation pops up, it will spread much faster than if we had varied crops, and of course it would have a more detrimental effect if that one monoculture crop gets destroyed. Palm oil farming is another example of a fragile monoculture.
Diversification is easier said than done though. You can't use a single type of harvester machine for all crop types. The Cherokee would plant things together: Corn, pumpkins/squash, and vine beans. They understood for generations that those "Three Sisters" thrived better together than by themselves. The beanstalks would climb the corn, the beans would put nitrogen and nutrients back in the soil, and the squash/pumpkins would reduce evaporation from the soil. The large gourd leaves would reduce the amount of sunlight on the ground, inhibiting weed growth. All that today would still require harvesting by hand, and unfortunately it is considered too unprofitable. It would be suitable for people with gardens, self-sufficient homesteads, or small-scale farms (and we gotta WANT to get into that, too).
The big problem is (I think) that first we would need a large-scale, multifaceted cultural shift. Ethanol as biofuel is not as sustainable as the industry wants us to believe. As much as I love beef, we gotta reduce our consumption of large livestock. Cattle need a lot of corn and a lot of water. Other farm animals are more efficient in terms of resources required per pound of meat. That's a statement that sounds great for reducing corn and water usage, but other monoculture crops have their own unique pros and cons.

It is a fake terrorist state that illustrates daily why it should not exist. It is actively committing a genocide and every second of it's existence is a crime against inalienable rights. Every second a government supports Israel's genocide of Palestinians is not only a putrid, cancerous rust on any veneer of just righteousness they may hold, but an unforgivable crime of those leaders and officers whose efforts and inaction prolong the killing.
Society still feels the echoes of the Holocaust, but there are yet other examples that go unpunished. The US committed genocide against native Indians in the same fashion as Israel, and continues to fuck them over, like the many marginalized people our government can lay its bigoted mittens on. The difference that emerged in the time since the outright and publicly supported killing of innocent people is that many US citizens are only (all too passive) beneficiaries of the crime. If your grandpa stole uncountable billions from others, and the targets were never given rectification while you and all grandpa's progeny are living large, would it be right to take from you and give to them? Our government thinks not. Israel, from my interpretation based on ACTIVELY KILLING CIVILIANS, thinks not. After however long it takes for the propaganda machines to mill the grains of outrage into the flour of pacified tax payers, will the descendants of our time's criminals give back what should not be theirs?
Are we giving back what should not be ours? Will there be, at the end of the path our policies pave, anyone left to see that rectification?
Our (we who descend from the criminals long past, be they grand larceners or petty thieves) history holds a long, long list of people who have yet to be repaid. Our present holds, like a drawer too many of us dread, a bill whose date has long since passed. Our future holds no justice but the fake ideas we coddle ourselves with, as our plunder outlasts our victims.
I don't want that future for Palestine. In a more self-focused/serving sense, I don't want that for the descendants of today's criminals. I don't want the long list of victims to be any longer. I don't want the fools to follow to rip out whatever stitches we may sew and choose to finish the larceny with their own murder. I don't want the fools who support Israel to do that now.
I worry that I'm just preaching to the choir. That this wall of text blurs into the noise of you, my peers, who have little but agreement that Israel is a terrorist state. What is this waste of energy but the virtue signaling that we, the descendants of criminals, use to prolong what should be inevitable? What use is this at all?
It's what I think. Maybe it falls like a fall leaf into mulch. Maybe the most significant thing to come of it is some syntax corrections. (I yearn to improve, please do correct me.)
What I KNOW is that this is my mission: to plant justice where its forebears were felled, and to protect it where it stands, like the groves of the druids of my tag's reference. To that end, we have work to do to free Palestine. The flowers of reclamation from tyranny bloom in revolt and riot. Regrowing paradise begins with destroying the parking lot.
TLDR: if you need protection at a protest or to bury the body of a bigot sometime, HMU.
Free Palestine.

Packed like squares of wheat: Pixel art and the rhizomatic
Tumblr media
This piece is, in a way, about Australia. At Mossman in Far North Queensland there is a sugarcane mill, which I was lucky to visit in the late 1980s. Every summer since it was built in 1896, it processes sugarcane into sugar. In recent years it has processed around a million tonnes of cane, from over 100 nearby farms. All of the waste products of the process (cane tops, bagasse, molasses, filter mud) have a use; the fibrous bagasse is used to fire the boilers to produce the steam that runs the plant’s electricity generators. As of November 2023, the mill is in danger of being shut down permanently.
As a child, my focus was on the machinery of the mill. It was an impressively gloomy and grimy place, although it was not operating at that time of year. Like most boys, I was interested in the mechanics more than the ingredients. I visited quite a few factories and power plants with my dad around that time, mostly in Ireland. I wasn’t cut out to be farmer or a naturalist, and very far from being an enthusiast for biology.
You could describe this bias as an interest in the processor rather than the processed. The focus is on the tightly-wound gadget (the mill) rather than the loose bulk of the material to be processed (sugarcane). I think we live in a world which has come to appreciate compact devices over extensive natural territories. This is the same emphasis which rates railway locomotives as more interesting than the permanent way, that prefers great men and prime movers of all kinds to the mass of ordinary people, that appreciates mountains but not plains.
Machines (sugarcane mills, locomotives, computers) have intricate, interlocking, complex parts. When in operation, they are energetic, acting rather than acted upon. They grab our attention more readily than the apparently inert materials that they process. The term capital, which is a cognate of cattle, captures this machinery in general. Capital is a stock rather than a flow.
The relative importance of the mill and the sugarcane which feeds it is, in a more realistic view, equal. There’s no point having a mill if the cane doesn’t grow. A smartphone is little use without the Internet. It is important to cultivate a proper understanding of the way our machines depend on larger systems and supply chains, and to appreciate these larger systems for themselves. There is a different kind of interdependence, larger and more consequential than the interlocking complexities of machinery.
The Australian writer Bruce Pascoe has described Aboriginal life and care for the land as a “gentle braid”. There were no smoking mills in Australia before the colonists arrived, though Pascoe believes that agriculture existed in a so-called pristine form (not imported from elsewhere). Indigenous knowledge of botany facilitates farming as well as hunter-gatherer lifestyles. It’s interesting to consider the different texture and properties of this indigenous knowledge, when compared to the knowledge of the colonizer. For one thing, indigenous knowledge would have been passed down orally and by demonstration, and took the form of practices rather than theories. In a sense, indigenous knowledge is practiced as if it was a matter of appropriateness—“we do it this way because we have found this method to produce the best results”. The stereotypically scientific knowledge of the coloniser is more theoretical and has a deductive rather than inductive basis—“our theory tells us to try this alteration in order to scale up the process”. A theory holds the promise of adaptability to new circumstances, whereas an established practice, while effective, might be denigrated as little more than matter of tradition and appropriateness, unable to cope with a new situation.
The notorious deaths of the explorers Burke and Wills were caused by a lack of engagement with indigenous knowledge. They were cooking and eating bread made from nardoo flour, in imitation of the Aboriginals, but failing to prepare the nardoo seeds correctly. They starved to death because their nardoo-based diet was not nutritious. What they were missing was not a biological theory of the nardoo plant, but a practical recipe for preparing nardoo flour.
I am not sure what the moral of the story of Burke and Wills is (perhaps it was just a case of arrogance) but it highlights the essential role played by practices that may not be scientifically substantiated, that are yet to be systematized. A perspective that decentres science would take account of the significance of these practices, of folk knowledge and the particularity of the various crops we all depend on for sustenance.
When thinking about this, the practice of pixel art comes to mind as an example of a non-mechanized form of activity. Although pixel artists use computers, they barely use any tools other than a palette of colours and the ability to select a pixel with the mouse. There’s no real reason why pixel art couldn’t be practiced on paper with a pencil grid and a set of crayons or paints. The pixel artist doesn’t care about the CPU or the complex possibilities of coding. All there is is the blank canvas and the colours.
The link between pixel art and the gentle braid of agriculture in pre-colonial Australia is perhaps a bit tenuous. I’m not claiming that both are simply uncomplicated. Both avoid major investments in machinery and capital, but they are not without complications. The pixel artist can bring all of his or her skill and intelligence to bear on the work, despite not engaging in any meaningful sense with the computer as a machine. The Aboriginal person doesn’t need to practice any kind of scientific method to have a extremely nuanced and comprehensive grasp of the landscape and its ecosystems.
The grid underlying pixel art doesn’t imply any kind of stratification. It doesn’t have a centre, much as a rhizomatic understanding of human relationships doesn’t have a centre. There is no monolithic absolute taproot in a rhizomatic system—a society characterized by what Édouard Glissant called the poetics of relation. A landscape roamed over and criss-crossed by desire lines and remembered associations is similarly gridded (though, admittedly, in a less regular manner). The pixels of an image are simply packed together “like squares of wheat” (this is a phrase from Philip Larkin’s poem The Whitsun Weddings). Although there are straight lines, there are no rules per se—neither scientific laws nor customary regulations. The pixel grid, like the natural world of the outback or the bush, is a experienced as a simple medium, despite the fact that what you can do there is fairly constrained—fairly circumscribed. It takes considerable skill to make a success of it. Somehow, you have to learn the ropes of foraging as a hunter-gatherer, or of drawing and painting as a pixel artist.
The image of a the simple digital canvas seems, in its pristine quality, to evoke the pristine environment of Australia before colonisation. This parallel between the object of interest of media studies and that of agronomy isn’t deep—it’s just a case, to me at least, of comparable moods or moments. Like the immaterial and (in spite of NFTs) unownable image world of pixel art, Australia was never a totally unstratified terra nullius, always a landscape into which associations were constantly being layered by its inhabitants. Bruce Pascoe evokes an anticapitalist paradise:
There were no fences for property delineation in Australia. Fences were sometimes built to enclose or herd animals but they were constructed in such a way as not to impede progress across the landscape. Instead, boundaries of language and lore were described on trees and rock and in song and dance. Everybody knew where they stood and although they had responsibility for geographic regions and features and could pass that responsibility to other members of the clan, they could never own it personally. —“Capital” by Bruce Pascoe in Meanjin, Summer 2021

This has to stop now.
I know that I don’t have much followers to begin with, but I do have a voice and I am CERTAINLY going to use it when it comes to my sisters and brothers out in Palestine getting murdered in broad daylight.
First of all, ethnic cleansing is a term used to describe the forced displacement of a group of people based on their ethnic or religious identity. This act can involve violence, harassment, and other tactics designed to drive a group out of a particular area. Doesn’t this description seem familiar?
In this case, the Israeli government have been shamelessly mass murdering the people of Palestine for decades. This is not new, but ever since Hamas (A Palestinian militant group which has ruled the Gaza strip since 2007) launched a massive military operation into Israeli territory on the 7th of October, people AND the media finally only started talking about it.
That day, the death toll among Israelis have exceeded to 1,200 (including 120 Israeli soldiers). And heaps of Israeli hostages were also taken into the Gaza strip. This happened as a reaction to changing the regional dynamics and growing Israeli agression.
Hamas’s move was triggered by THREE factors.
1. The policies of the far-right Israeli government enabling settler violence in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem led to a sense of desperation among Palestinians and growing demands for a reaction. At the same time, the rising tensions in the West Bank caused by these policies necessitated shift of Israeli forces away from the south and into the north to guard the settlements. This gave Hamas both a justification and an opportunity to attack.
2. The Hamas leadership felt compelled to act due to the acceleration of Arab-Israeli normalization. In recent years, this progress further diminished the significance of the Palestinian issue for Arab leaders who became less keen on pressuring Israel on this matter.
3. Hamas was emboldened after it managed to repair its ties with Iran. In recent years, the movement had to reconsider the political position it assumed in the wake of the Arab Spring in 2011, in opposition to Iran and its ally, the Syrian regime.
This picture below shows the stats on the atrocities of the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces)/ Israeli settlers:
Tumblr media
- Israel have killed over 10,000 (NEWLY UPDATED) since the 7th of October.
What is Israel doing to Gaza and what are the effects?
- Control over borders/block of resources which means loss of fuel and how this affects vital services.
• Hospitals
- Neonatal incubators (rigid box-like enclosure in which an infant can be kept in a controlled environment for observation and care. The device may include a heater, a fan, a container for water to add humidity, a control valve through which oxygen may be added, and access ports for nursing care) need fuel to function. Therefore, innocent babies may possibly die from hypothermia or colds.
- Essential medical equipment powers off therefore jeopardizing the: people on life support machines, patients requiring dialysis treatments and ambulance trucks are unable to run.
• Drinking water
- Desalination plants shut down.
- Pumping facilities cannot distribute water from wells.
- Water trucks cannot make deliveries.
• Wastewater
- As treatment plants shuts down, contaminated water is dumped into the sea.
• Groceries/Access to food
- The flour mills cannot run and bakeries cannot make bread.
- Food stocks could run out rapidly and many are eating one meal per day or even no meal according to aid groups.
What is the reason behind the US unwavering support towards Israel?
- The US supported Israel from the moment it was created as a state in 1948.
- The strategic considerations behind the decision of recognizing Israel as a state from the start:
• Historical context: right after WW2, cold war between the US and Russia begins.
• The Middle East no doubt has many oil reserves and convenient waterways (such as the Suez canal) and these were key battleground for superpower hegemonic (ruling or dominant in a political or social context) influence.
• Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign aid in the post WW2 era.
• 2016: Barack Obama signed a defence agreement with Israel providing 438bn in US military support over 10 years.
• Pro-Israel interest groups, such as AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee)
NOTE:
I beg you to continue the conversation, continue posting and sharing to your friends, continue spreading awareness about Palestine. In times like this, we are important. Our knowledge is important. Remind people that this is an ON-GOING ISSUE and not letting it dissapear from people’s minds is so important. As I am typing, more lives of innocent civilians in Palestine could be ending.
Please know that you do not need to know every single detail of this matter, the willingness to learn is MORE than enough. 🙏🏼
