Field Perturbation Studies
<`•.°.+`•.•∆| - Field Perturbation Studies
The "Field Perturbation Studies" compositions are a generative sound art piece that explores the boundaries of time and frequency in a stereo field.
The work is generated using a system that creates randomly-sized dimensions, ranging from microsecond to multiple seconds. The dimensional vectors time range is shared across both mono channels, resulting in a temporally synchronized stereo field, although sonically isolated. Using only sinusoidal waves, the frequency range and slope of change, is conditionally generated from 1hz to 88,200hz, based on a variety of data points, and utilize aliasing to create a sweeping effect that reaches 44,100hz before reversing in frequency. The sound generated is also passed through a reverb UGEN with all parameters conditionally varied based on data points assessed in the duration of the dimensional vector, and the state of frequency shifted.
The compositions aim is to create a complex system, using relatively simple elements, and to use that complexity, in an attempt to overwhelm the listener's ability to articulate what is being heard. Ultimately leading the listener to a subconscious state of surrender, from a kind of exhaustion, or analytical fatigue. Playing off the natural tendency of people to attempt prediction of theᅠchanging pattern. Enveloping them in a dynamic, seemingly paradoxical cloud of both maximal and minimal qualities. The work is inspired by long-form artists such as liane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros, La Monte Young, Yoshi Wada and Catherine Christer Hennix. As well as, other systems music pioneers like Maryanne Amacher, David Tudor, Iannis Xenakis, Florian Hecker, Yasunao Tone and Mark Fell. As well as a burgeoning modern scene, of like minded musicians, and artists exploring the very limits of temporal and audible perception. There is an included "Bonus Item" in the downloaded folder. With the compilation output of all 2,077 dimensional vectors in great detail for the "Field Permutation Study (Pointillistic)" composition.ᅠ

Syn As Tex Scene
youtube
by Florian Hacker

You just can’t do Florian Hecker’s work any justice via video, you have to feel it. I heard his installation at Chisenhale some years ago and felt like I’d gone mad. I could hear sounds that were not coming through my ears. I felt like my organs and bones were vibrating. Psychoacoustic madness.

Florian Hecker — A Script for Machine Synthesis (Editions Mego)
A Script For Machine Synthesis by Hecker
Pink is a chromatic demon. Intermittent surging machines tone ominously. Do I want to communicate with the ghost? There are no I's here. Transparent, through and through. Reflexive. Pink is not made of ice. Reflective. It is the ice that is pink throughout. Is attention waning? What the agent sees or what it seems to be seeing is mapped onto a specific sound that neither reveals the underlying mechanisms of perception nor is the equivalent of what is seen. Getting up to speed.
If you've made it to this second block of words, it is important to know that Florian Hecker’s latest sound experiment is ostensibly about a pink cube: “A cubic chunk of pink/inaccessible to the crowd.” Vital to know, too, that the first paragraph echoes the disorienting yet engaging “procedure of abstraction” which propels these 57 minutes. And yes, there are ominous machine tweaks that dramatize the distorted narrative. Understand that — as with the two previous installments dating back to 2013 — A Script for Machine Synthesis is more akin to a novel punctuated with sound than a synthesizer record with voice accompaniment. These releases are not filed under “easy listening.”
Inaccessible to the crowd, more difficult than novel? As with the quotations extracted above, it is worthwhile to re-appropriate the narrative into a description of its contents. Make no mistake, A Script for Machine Synthesis is a “feat of mental abstraction” whereby the listener is taken on an ever-evolving journey concerning a pink cube [and three recurrent white obelisks.] “This is an experiment in putting synthetic emptiness back into synthetic thought” is likely a self-admission, but one that is also contradictory. Synthetic is a key value – there are no unaffected voices, nor prominent organic instruments – and yet, the evolving subject matter becomes authentically and organically engaging. Were English-speaking aliens to have only this recording as a portal to our human experience, they'd have a quite substantial knowledge base akin to several thousand Wikipedia pages, with philosophic undercurrents that belie more esoteric and unreachable realms. Which is more than can be said for Coldplay’s newest.
As such, any listener claiming a holistic understanding of A Script for Machine Synthesis spews alternative facts. In our post-truth world, the work’s general theme is the increased — and yet questionably trustworthy — methods through which a pink cube [and those three recurrent white obelisks] are perceived. Methods of perception, you say? “To fathom the emptiness, one has to communicate with this ghost.” Or, in more modern terms: Shazam listens intently to this album for an inordinately long time and replies “WTF” and then, “Ah, thank you for this insight.”
Influences abound, which I'd best approximate with the following nomenclature: Buddhist, cut-up Burroughsian, Sellarsian, scientific. Elemental, metallic, intense, and disorientingly multi-disciplinary. Is this an accurate philosophic dissertation of subatomic connectivity, or an absurdist joke?
Likely both. “Sellarsian” and several of the phrases in the opening paragraph are this agent's own creations, not extracted directly from the narrative but within its general domain and therefore permitted. A finger pointing at the moon; a candle on the other side of the sun. There are no “I’s” throughout.
Should everyone listen to this? is one crux here, but a valid adjunct: is repeat listening required? Yeses abound, as the “cube is not subjectively facing towards our objective experience.” There are engaging, confounding, enlightening missives therein that encompass more than tea tag slogans and speak-sung fortune cookies. The pink cube that is within and beyond A Script for Machine Synthesis rewards greatly, jarring beyond the daily, monochrome pale.
