Despite being a pioneer plant associated with old fields and disturbed sites, gray goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis) is one of my personal favorites of the thirty-odd species that grow in Central Appalachia. This bold colonizer is notable for its short, droopy stature, golden-yellow flowers that only grow on one side of stem, a reddish-purple main stem, and narrow, lanceolate leaves with fine hairs. In short, it's a perfect little bumblebee magnet with a great form factor for a native wildflower garden.

Just finished reading the Claymore manga, by Nobuhiro Yagi. Without spoiling much, I must say, I enjoyed it even more than I thought I would. Every big reveal is executed to near perfection, the humor varies from sharp exhale worthy to gleeful chuckle worthy. Never begged for it to stop, which was a relief. The action was spectacular, beautiful artwork that evolved by the volume, always readable. Plenty of lovable characters to feel invested in. Little bit of same face syndrome going on in the first 2 or 3 volumes, but it's not too confusing thanks to context/dialogue. It was a solid story with plenty of memorable scenes I'll look back on for a long time. Be warned, there's nudity, but it's never for the sake of "fan service". It's usually accompanied by horrific violence & justifiable in context. I recommend giving Claymore a read. Haven't seen the anime yet. I can't even IMAGINE how the animation teams tackled the myriad of high detailed creature designs/body horror.
Also GOOD GOLLY are 99% of these characters gay!

National Gray Day
National Gray Day is observed on May 27 every year. This day is observed throughout the country as part of the observances of National Brain Cancer Awareness Month. National Gray Day encourages everyone to remember those lost to brain cancer, celebrate those who survived and support those who are enduring the pain and hardships of brain cancer. The day is organized by Voices Against Brain Cancer, which aims to host events throughout the country to raise awareness about brain cancer and advance research towards a cure for the disease.
History of National Gray Day
National Gray Day is organized by Voices Against Brain Cancer and is observed on May 27 throughout the country. The day is a part of the annual observance of National Brain Cancer Awareness Month. Several events are organized across the country to acknowledge those suffering from brain tumors, as well as those who have survived them. The events are geared towards spreading information about brain cancer to encourage early diagnosis and raise funds for research towards a cure.
Brain cancer causes the growth of malignant brain tumors. These tumors occur due to the formation of abnormal cells which may begin in the brain or spread from other parts of the body into the brain.
The primary symptoms of brain tumors include headaches, vomiting, seizures, mental changes, problems with vision, periods of unconsciousness, difficulty with motor movements, sensations, or difficulty with talking. However, these symptoms can be ascribed to a multitude of illnesses, making brain tumors hard to diagnose. Additional complications include the difficulty of scanning the brain because most imaging devices are disrupted by the blood-brain barrier.
Research for a cure for brain cancer is underway. Treatments range from surgery and radiation therapy to chemotherapy. All these treatments come with complications. Surgery is the preferred course of action, particularly when there is only one tumor that originated in the brain. However, multiple tumors that originated in other locations require radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

You know it's autumn when . . . you spot the gorgeous white berries of gray dogwood (Cornus racemosa), also referred to as northern swamp dogwood and panicle dogwood. Gray dogwood is one of two local Cornus species (the other being red osier dogwood) with white berries. Gray dogwood is a mounding, suckering shrub found in bottomland forests at lower elevations, especially along streams and riverbanks. Red osier has a similar shrubby stature but prefers higher elevation forests. Silky dogwood is yet another shrubby member of genus Cornus and lives in the same habitat as gray dogwood, but has blue (rather than white) berries.

Great Smoky Mountain National Park: Visitor Center
Did you know that the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is a World Heritage Site? These beautiful mountains, known as the Great Smokies, are located in both North Carolina and Tennessee, a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and a segment of the Appalachians.  This land, measuring nearly half a million acres, became a national park in 1940 and a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1983. The national park’s…

Goodbye Rock Kingdom...
This is my idea for what specifically the far north-west region of the Rock Kingdom looks like, the part bordering the forested colorful Pop territory, and known as the backwater, hick part of the country. It's very scarcely populated with mainly woolly caterpillar farms and small settlements, and it's where Les and Hed are from.
While the center of the kingdom is a large active volcano which doesn't lend itself to most plant life, I imagine there's more and more the further away you travel from it. My main inspiration for this part of the country were the tundra biome and the Scottish highlands — with the ground mostly being covered in rock and a thin layer of soil and flora: mostly low growing vegetation like lichen, moss and herbs, and nothing taller than subshrubs such as heather and berry bushes. Actual shrubs and trees start to show up only when you start to near the Pop Forest.
The nature is mostly in various shades of reds, browns, grays, and earthy greens, basically the colors Rock Trolls come in, since my headcanon is that their colors are like camouflage in their natural environment. (I don't think Rock Trolls can change the color of their hair the way we see Pop Trolls do in the first movie.)
And their shaggy hair textures are supposed to resemble the environment too. With all the lichen and other rough and patchy textures, I was also trying to bring out a bit of a "grunge" effect. Though I feel like this part didn't come out in the illustrations the way I wanted it to. ':)
Overall I imagine it being a very pretty place, with open skies and amazing views, the downside is the close-mindedness of the trolls living there and the fact that there's not much going on.
