vinyl tiles
Vinyl tiles have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. These versatile flooring options offer a range of benefits that make them an excellent choice for both residential and commercial spaces.
One of the key advantages of vinyl tiles is their durability. Made from tough synthetic materials, these tiles are designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and daily wear and tear. This makes them ideal for high-traffic areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways.
In addition to being durable, vinyl tiles are also extremely easy to maintain. Unlike other types of flooring that require regular polishing or waxing, vinyl tiles simply need to be swept or mopped regularly to keep them looking clean and fresh.
Another benefit of vinyl tiles is their water resistance. Unlike wood or laminate flooring which can warp or buckle when exposed to moisture, vinyl tiles are completely waterproof. This makes them an excellent choice for areas prone to spills or humidity.
Vinyl tiles also come in a wide variety of styles and designs, allowing you to find the perfect fit for your space. From realistic wood grain patterns to bold geometric prints, there's a vinyl tile option out there that will suit any aesthetic preference.

For the challenge!
I wondered carefully on which ship to choose to share to you all, and made my mind on Catherine and Christopher. Not the Dollangangers, the Roachs, from a novel called Relations (also known as The Story of the Weasel, as Cathy thinks of Chris as being weasel like and the book is about him and their relationship). Their canonical relationship, by the way. Unlike the Dollangangers, this Cathy and Chris have a fully consensual relationship (albeit they do start to engage in sex at a way too young of an age), but they don't get a happy ending. At least not in the book, but that's why we have headcanon and post canon fics.
When I say they started their relationship at a very early age, I mean that Cathy was only 10, while Chris was still only 12. It all starts when they find their deceased father's porn collection. I don't think they could have truly known what they were seeing, but that didn't stop them from mimicking it.
“Christopher regarded me strangely, and moved in my direction. He told me to lie down on the floor. I obeyed unquestioningly. He looked at me darkly it seemed, with piercing clarity, for he knew the exact nature of my thoughts at that moment. I, of my own accord, removed my undergarments, and placed them beneath my head. I had a strange view of him thus; he seemed very tall from my lowly position on the floor. He seemed dominant with the red bulb glowing; but a slight nervousness hovered about his eyes. I smiled at him. He lay down on top of me, and put his member inside my body.”
When recalling this scene later, Cathy feels a “small throbbing in [her] private parts”, so even after all this time, she still gets turned on by the thought of her brother.
Around the same time Cathy and Chris started to experience sexually, their Mamma began to date Richard, the Frenchman. One day, when Cathy was eleven, Mamma has Cathy deliver a letter to the Frenchman and he has her try on a corset over her clothes, since she was too shy to remove them, and then gifts her a pair of white silk stockings. The next day, Chris returns the stocking to the Frenchman, telling him his sister has no need for such clothing.
The Frenchman is a pervert and Chris gets very concerned about his interest on Cathy. He gets jealous of it as her 'boyfriend' and protective as her brother.
When Cathy catches pneumonia, Chris helps to nurse her back to health and keeps her company while she lays in bed.
“The fever would not leave me. But nor did my brother. […] He held my head patiently and his eyes never shut in his vigil.” “I think now that Christopher and I half-died together in that terrible week, and afterwards, when the terror had passed, we were never quite the children we had been before.”
About an year goes by and Chris tells Cathy that they shouldn’t have sex anymore, and Cathy gets upset. He tells her that later, when she is grown up, she might come to regret their relationship, and he doesn’t wants that, which is why he is breaking it up. Cathy, however, hates that they were breaking up and is very hurt.
“‘I don’t think it’s right for us to do it - being brother and sister. I mean I’ve always known - or rather always felt more than known - that it wasn’t right.’ […] ‘No. And I don’t know what you’re talking about. It is better because we are brother and sister, because we really know each other; we are the same. I cannot see that it is bad.’”
We known from her narration at, even at an older age, Cathy never came to regret her relationship with Chris. In fact, she only gets married with someone else because Chris keeps pushing her away.
After the breakup, Chris moves to his uncle's farm in Cape Town to get far away from Cathy.
“I cannot imagine what I will do without you, Cath: I cannot imagine a day without your face, or your sweet companionship.  I do love you. But this must be for the best.”
Chris remains away for a long time, only returning after five years when Cathy was nineteen. They have a heartfelt conversation and, at night, after the rest of the house has gone to sleep, he visit’s Cathy’s room. She asks to cuddle with him until she falls asleep and he agrees, climbing into her bed. Just when they are kissing, their older brother, Edward (who I had neglected to mention until now) lunges into the room, catching them together. He explained that he had always suspected something, but it wasn’t until he had grown up that he understood the noises he heard coming from Chris and Cathy’s bedroom. He orders Chris out of the house and Cathy weeps, begging Chris to stay and denying to Edward that anything has happened.
Chris leaves as ordered and goes back to South Africa. Eventually, he enlists as a soldier at the Boer War. From the war front, he writes Cathy a letter, telling her that he still loves her. The book ends like this, with Chris in Cape Town and Cathy trapped in a unloving marriage.
But that doesn't stop me from creating scenarios in which Chris goes home to England as a war hero and and he and Cathy run away together. The story is set in 1900, back when it was easier to disappear and start again. Maybe after the war, Cathy goes looking for Chris and they get married in a land where no one knows they are siblings. They have loved each other their whole life, there's no reason to assume that they won't find their way back to each other.
A few more quotes that I want to include but I didn't know where to place them:
"I did not find it sinful; the closeness between my brother and me was a true joy; it sustained me in my darkest moments, and indeed still does to this day, though tempered with much sorrow now." "Because even on that day, which was the beginning of a singular relationship between my brother and I, even on that day there was a spiritual and love bond between us." “I would not be so oppressed if I could but feel that my past was wicked and scandalous. If I believed that, I could gladly submit to the institution or the grave. But some buoyant spirit within me keeps insisting that what I had was fine, and contained elements of true beauty hard to capture in any existence.” “The old house creaked and groaned, and in the darkness I only felt secure because I was close to my brother.”
Even if I don't win, I really appreciate the opportunity to talk about my favourite Chris and Cathy. No shade to the Dollangangers, but Chris and Cathy Roach are the better ones. Their story was left unfinished by the author, allowing us to make them whatever we want them to be. I love the angst on Chris's part, him being scared that he's taking advantage or corrupting his sister, while all that Cathy wants is to be with him.
It's a lovely book. The only reason I don't tell everyone to go read it is that it's very hard to find, as it has been out of print since forever (afaik, there has only been two prints of the book). There a few copies being sold on Amazon, so if you like incest books, try to grab one while you can.
XoXo, @litcest (since I can only send asks in my main blog)
Thank you for a good write-up as usual! I hate endings like this, and I certainly wish your interpretation of it was canon. Also, while they started their relationship early, there's no grooming or icky age gap, this I appreciate much.

A Song With Ten Names
Chapter 44: Kiss Me, Son of God
Chapter 1 ☆ Next chapter ☆ AO3 ☆ Featured song playlist
Summary of chapter: Sometimes telling exactly the truth isn't the exact right thing to say. After all, there isn't much difference between a public speaker and someone's god; that's a lot of power, changing someone's mind.
Author's Note: The song for this chapter is Kiss Me, Son of God by They Might Be Giants. The fic also mentions the song Ship in a Bottle by Fin. I also reached a lot of milestones on AO3: 300 kudos, 10,000 hits, and 200,00 words!
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
I look like Jesus, so they say
But Mr. Jesus is very far away
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
The waves are foamy, water so clean you can look straight down to the sea floor. It glistens and shimmers like an aurora, or a pearl, or abalone. The stranger sits on the beach, sand too light and soft to be real, and the wind combs into her scalp, leading her locks of hair astray to reach forward towards the ocean. She has been put here to contemplate a choice.
Two figures are stand far out, close enough to see distinct shapes but too distant to recognize expressions. Somehow, some way, they do not sink to the depths but rather stay entirely above water. It is inherently known that one wears a white ring and one has purplish gray. The silhouettes are in such a position that you cannot see if they face towards her or away...that is, until the taller one raises an arm.
His hand is palm outstretched, just so that from where he stands, the woman is seated just above it. The wind gains actual meaning, not mere movement. It has a direction.
In…
...Out.
She listens to the water sigh as it laps her toes and retreats. Every time she has been here, the water has inched closer. Has she never moved, or is it chasing her, each night they resume their dance? Another lick of the tide...and then back. She wonders what she tastes like, being consumed little by little like a lollipop.
In…
...Out.
The small figures wait so patiently, silent so she has nothing to listen to but her mind and the waves. Washing in...out...in...out…
Her vision rises, and with the wind lovingly cupping the back of her head, it helps her rise to her feet. If they can walk on water, maybe...—
She takes her first stumbling step forward just as the tide pulls back. She sees them, waiting for her. A ringed hand still waits to take hers into it. A jolt of desperation, and she takes her second step recklessly. The tide comes in and wraps around the ankles. She falls backwards, the horizon and the two upon it lowering out of her sight as the world flips. She is about to land on her head.
And then she wakes up.
The one saving grace is that it’s happened so many times that this dream at worst is giving her a cold sweat. She glances through the early morning night and sees the bed. A blue-haired head is facing away from where the girl sleeps on the floor.
It seems even the company of angels can’t even save her. She wonders, as Konan rests mere feet away, if there’s a reason angels are always depicted in art as having their eyes shut.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Now you're the only one here who can tell me if it's true
That you love me
And I love me
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Some things get easier, some things get harder.
For the second time since she’s started owning a house and dealing with unexpected company, the performer looks through the kitchen cupboards and frowns. A small door shuts in on a tin empty except a few grains of dried rice, and she exhales to herself.
It’s been a long time... a long time since she’s been to town. In the very least, it isn’t quite so hard to talk to the Akatsuki leaders as it used to be about this prospect. Or at least, so she speculates.
Upon hearing her request, Pain’s eyes widen ever so slightly; it’s in a way less that he’s surprised or otherwise caught off guard, and more that he is thinking. The woman frowns, looking on with her big, worried eyes and black cape around her shoulders, hands folded in front of her lap.
“...I suppose this is inevitable,” he says, and it’s in such a way that makes the woman blink and curl her brow.
“I can go by myself, if you’d like.” But he shakes his head.
“Out of the question. On the contrary, Konan and I must go.”
She looks askance, thinking through what must be done, if that is the case. “I don’t know how to write, but...I could tell you what we usually stock up on—”
A hand goes on her shoulder, and she stops mid sentence. There's a seriousness about even something so mundane. Why does some simple chore require such...poise from him? The answer is veiled:
“You’ll be necessary for the trip. We’ll leave shortly. Prepare your bags for groceries, and we will meet you on the porch.
Caw, caw.
The blackbird of the barren trees never sleeps, always coos in the absence of the woman's songs. Even as she listens close, there's nothing she's certain of in that melody, besides the strength at which it echos in the trees. She feels like a silhouette herself, right now, standing on the front porch underneath bare branches, simply standing and waiting with her empty luggage by her legs. An exhale.
“There’s something on your mind.”
His voice again, and of course as she turns to see Pain, Konan is never far behind. The door clicks shut behind her, and the leader simply waits to be acknowledged. A sigh, and the stranger tries.
“I figure...this doesn’t really mean so much when you’re used to people judging you guys,” she tries to explain in a roundabout manner, lest she be rude or unsympathetic, “But I...this is the first time I’ve gone out...since...—”
“Well,” she tries to continue. “Since the star people came for me. I’m worried about...the reception. Hidan told me that he heard...— I— I’m worried that the village...may...—”
A pause. Then step, by step, by step, the ginger comes down the wood planks and stops on the stair just above the ground, barely above where her own feet wait. And again, again...a hand goes to her shoulder. Why is it so heavy? She looks at him in such a way, hums in confusion, so that he knows that she wants to know, too, whatever wisdom he feels. She isn’t a child; she is grown up, and she wants to be privy to the truth, regardless of what it may be.
A man who cares so very much about the world growing up decides that maybe she might have a bit of a grown-up in her, too.
“That’s why we’re going.”
“...Huh?”
His demeanor stays cool, as if he’s done this a million times before, telling people to confront the bad news. “Your hunches are correct. The village nearby...it does, indeed, know. Hard to hide, you having been there at least once every day at some point, as well as our cloaks everywhere, on the outskirts of their sight. Ninja from Hoshigakure swarm in...and the rest of our story is so painfully clear.”
A tilt of her head, and he removes his hand now that he’s certain the girl is listening.
“The truth is that we need them. They’re the only village that can reasonably supply your home— our base, with what's necessary for its operation. We need to begin making amends to those that worry we’ve betrayed them.”
That...makes sense, she quickly concedes. But that brings about another issue:
“...I...Maybe...you shouldn’t bring me. Then. They already know me too well. I'll make it worse.”
“Have faith," Pain answers, and it makes her stomach drop. "You’re the most necessary component of what’s to come.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
I destroyed a bond of friendship and respect
Between the only people left who'd even look me in the eye
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Different figures stand upon the horizon, as they trail somewhat upward down a road that widens to show more and more use, than what she saw within her dream. Someone— maybe she knew them, maybe she never did— goes from a casual lean upon a lamp pole to an alert, straight-up stance. The woman frowns as he runs away and another stays still, keeping watch lest she run away.
“Takara.”
It's too late to back up now.
Her lips don’t stop pursing when the leader of the Akatsuki looks aside to her, having noticed she’s stopped walking not even more than a single step their cadence of six feet became four. Even in the brightness of midday, he is unreadable; light or shadow, he is a man of every possibility she could imagine. Anger...humor...passiveness...it all could be there. But as she had told Kisame before, ironically enough after taking him to this very town, it matters less what you feel and more how you act. And how Pain chooses to act is with patience. Konan chooses the same, full trust in what is to come.
An inward inhale through her nose and she watches the top of that hill, the little landmarks that make it clear they’re approaching some sort of civilization. Where there was one...now rising into sight are several. They all stand there and wait.
With nothing else to do, she understands that everyone, friend or foe, is counting on her to move forward.
The number of people form a proper crowd, and despite herself, she can recognize the faces. Hadn’t it been too long? Too long since she was at the bar? Too long since she was chased down in the rain in the middle of the forest and became someone else? And because she recognizes them...she knows they recognize her.
And they do.
“It’s them.”
“Yes, it’s them!”
“Who are those two? Why are they always two different people…?”
“What’s she doing?”
The shinobi and their pet girl just walk up, up, up, until there is no polite way to walk any closer, feet in sandals facing worn, closed toe shoes. Konan gives a small glance behind her shoulder, a whisper: “Keep close,” and too scared to respond, the traveler can only hope that Konan can tell she understands.
An older, rotund man with a bushy mustache is centered in front of the villagers, strong-looking hands on his hips and a stern look in his eyes. “That’s far enough,” he says, nearly as commandingly as Pain can speak. “There’s a lot of explaining to be had here. I don’t suppose you’re here for tea.”
Something feels off, and it makes the performer squint. Not trusting her gut, she leaves the speaking to others who clearly have more to say.
“Of course,” Pain responds. “We have every intention of explaining ourselves.”
Whispers, whispers. It reminds her of the voices in the ocean— words she can catch and feelings she hears, but nothing concrete. Distrust, confusion, betrayal.
She grips her hands tight within one another, lest they’re thrown over her face to hide. The old man glances at her, and then he glances back to Pain. “Here’s what we’re gonna do,” he speaks for everyone. What terrible responsibility, the woman thinks. “Yer gonna come with me, and you’re gonna wait until we can get a town hall together.”
“...And what will the purpose of the town hall be?” the ginger asks. The answer is immediate, and no matter how level the head villager tries to be, it is still greatly tinged with a sort of malice, a distaste in his mouth.
“What we’re gonna do with you.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Now I laugh and make a fortune
Off the same ones that I tortured
And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
It’s only the muscle memory of walking down the stone paths that allow the performer to recall that this was once her stage, time feeling so distant that each landmark feels so alien. The lampposts...were they always that rusted? Was that bench there, or was it there? Wasn't that restaurant on the other side of the street? After an eyeful of unsettling scenery, she holds her hands together, thumbs nervously flicking one another as the curl of her fingers rest upon the table. A frown on her lips, the woman glances about, recognizing her surroundings less based on her own recollection and more like she saw it in an old, blurry photo. Where the glasses against the back wall always so dusty? She’s not sure that centerpiece used to be there. But most importantly…
The performer turns her head, coincidentally, just as the back door opens and the almost familiar man begins to walk in. There's a glimpse of something that cannot be denied.
...The piano didn’t use to be shoved into the corner.
“A-ah!” she gasps lightly, shutting herself up as soon as the performer realizes Konan has merely bumped her to gain her attention. Step, step, step. A wary middle aged man with caterpillar eyebrows sits across the three, an expression hard to read besides that he too wears a frown. It finally hits her:
“...You’re not Taiga,” she mutters, less to and more about the person who resembles her boss. The stranger shakes his head, and even his voice is a ghost of who she used to know.
“Nah. He’s passed on.” The performer doesn’t get any time to mourn her former employer, the one who so kindly gave her a place to be. “I’m his brother. Takuya.”
It doesn’t escape her that the name she was given isn’t too far off from his.
“You came here for a reason," he continues, gesturing with an impatient, open palm towards the Akatsuki, apparently not eager to dwell on the past. "Speak yer mind.”
And the leader nods, a lady on either side looking to him, though one has full faith while the other simply worries. The difference is that the former of the two women...has seen God at work.
“The effect of the Akatsuki presence isn’t lost on me," the pierced one says from behind the tall collar of his clouds. "You speak for all of your village here, correct?”
Takuya scoffs. “Hardly.”
“And yet you’ve taken it upon yourself to sit me down before the others do as they wish.”
The old man feels a shiver, gulping and pulling his own collar with the crook of an index finger. “I care, okay?! I haven’t been here long, but...hell."  Not been here long...that explains a little and leaves a lot to be asked, the performer mentally notes. "This place was in a bad shape when I came around, giving my twin a funeral. It’s a bad omen, you know. To live ahead of your twin brother.”
The look alike pauses, perhaps expecting a chiding, but the three are silent in response. It unnerves him a little.
“...Anyway. Everyone talking about the Akatsuki, seein’ your cloaks and people with shinobi headbands, star shape branded on them. They aren’t people used to this ninja war business. In the Great War, this place was a secret haven, a pocket away from the horrid nonsense you people do.”
“And we infiltrated it,” Pain guesses at the sentiment the Akatsuki has left in its wake.
“Yeah,” the other guy answers, a roughness in his throat. “You did. What I’m saying is...outside looking in, you and this girl of yours are bringing trouble. We can only withstand this kind of abuse so long. What? You want us around? Then—" ...He cuts himself short, lest he talk too much. "Now…” He sits up, pushing himself back slightly to allow more space, more room for him to evaluate the enemy ahead. “You’ve let an old windbag talk about himself enough. I asked ya a question. ...Aren’t you going to answer?”
The performer isn’t very good at a silent role, not when the quiet is as poignant as this. Shutting up is fine; it's the anxiety of it that makes it hell. She searches the face of her manor’s lord, any sign of what he actually thinks versus what he says. She will not succeed in separating the two; he is still unreadable.
“I come to apologize and attempt a truce,” he puts simply, voice so smooth and confident and cool. It’s a voice made for radio, or for a podium. “We want to protect you from the menace Hoshigakure-nin now present.”
“Then leave,” the old man answers simply. But Pain just shakes his head.
“It’s too late for that, and you’re well aware. Regrettably, the hoshi-nin now know of this village’s presence. They aren’t people that often reach out beyond their boundaries. Now that they have...I wonder…”
There’s an abrupt strike of fright that breaks the twin's poker face.
“...Do you even know we’ve defeated them? Have they ever started to leave your village alone, once they started leaving us alone?”
The silence hurts the performer’s lungs, forcing her to hold breath lest she make her presence any more tangible. She tries to glance over Pain’s shoulders to the angel— the very one that got her in this predicament, meeting in this very bar— but she’s just as steeled as her god.
On the other side of the table, an old man grits his teeth. “...Goddammit.” And as if he’s waiting again for Pain to speak...he shuts up.
But no one answers the old man’s prayers for mercy. He is forced to speak aloud his fears. That is the only way he can be saved.
“You’re right. You’re right that we still see ‘em. They come in, bully through the gates and the shops and even our very own damn front doors. They’re like an infestation. Yer just lucky we don’t have a wave of them in town about now…”
As if that means anything, the Akatsuki having found them no threat at all. That just makes Takuya’s predicament more grave, and he knows it. He says the thus far unspoken, tiptoed around, the exact point they're circling here:
“...What can you say to convince us that the Akatsuki will be any better?”
Another bump, and another gasp. Konan alerts the performer, now, that instead of the old man looking to Pain, Pain is looking to her. The woman’s heart jumps out of her chest, races out of her mouth recklessly.
“I-I-I-”
She just gets a frown under bushy brows, and part of her hopes he is paying no mind. “...You’re not doing a good job convincing me of whatever you mean, here,” Takuya tells the ring-eyed soldier. Pain, however, does not waver as he stares at the girl.
“...The people here will recognize her,” he assists, answering where the performer caught cat’s tongue. “They’ll know that on our own volition, we’ve helped her. We’ve offered protection and a means of income.” A blink and the gray targets center onto the twin again. “...Certainly someone at the funeral brought her up, it being such a recent event.”
She isn’t sure she likes the way Takuya looks at her across the table. It’s less like she’s a person and more like a product, an item, a service even— something to evaluated not on her own merit but of another value. But with nothing more to do, she has to let him. The woman is, after all, the performer, and this is the job she had selected from day one.
“...They did," he admits, and to her dismay he begins to speak to the musician directly. ""'Nother girl told me all about you. Said you used to perform every night, stopped all of a sudden, and then like a ghost now only show up once in a blue moon. You expect that to mean something to me?”
With that accusation, it is abundantly clear that is a role she can no longer say no to. Like days before...before the word "Akatsuki", before repairing the house, before she started to be someone else's responsibility...the woman has to think about what she did every night to make ends meet. Reach in your heart...and almost say the whole truth.
“I...used to be a wandering bard,” she mutters, voice so low lest any fluctuation of tone be read for the worst. “I had been kidnapped a long way's away, and got free...and…”
Her eyes pop open and she looks down. A cold hand with a gray ring is on her lap. It slinks away as soon as it came, but the Rinnegan stays; she doesn't have to look to feel it there. All of a sudden, she realizes that the expression he has held— presses onto her now— supposed to be whatever she wants it to be; that’s the whole point.
Take a hint, girl, as you shadow the role of an ice-cold vampire.
“I,” she says more clearly, enunciating her words as to be understood. “...Came across these...wonderful men, dressed in red clouds like the rising sun.” She looks to the ceiling, watching a spider weave its web between the banisters, rub its legs together and make something out of nothing but what is already inside the abdomen of that bug. “They took me here...to help me find a job. And even when I did...they didn’t just go. They intended to stay until it was certain that I was stable and safe. Circumstances changed…”
It’s best to leave out why they changed.
“...And for my safety against the...hoshi-nin,” she repeats how her detractors are referred, the people whose name she stole, “I began to live with them. Nearby. “
Okay. You’re halfway there; now look to Takuya. Talk to him directly and say what he needs to hear.
“I know I made Taiga worry. It was awful of me to go and not say why. But I thought I was...avoiding trouble. I thought I was...keeping it away from you all,” she half-lies. “But I guess trouble came anyways.” She blinks at him, slow and soft with guilt in her eyes, one she hopes he can feel, despite all his rightful misgivings. “I think the only thing that can be done now is...try to correct the problems I caused, at least as well as I can.”
Konan notes the exact moment something in the old twin turns on the rails. It shifts with precision, just enough so that the Akatsuki and their girl can reach down and replace the pieces where it better suits their needs.
“Lass…” he mutters. At first the performer is afraid it’s malice that makes his voice soft, but it’s something else entirely. His hand reaches forward, to lay on top of hers across the slabs of smoothed wood under dim, flickering candlelight. “I don’t have any mind that you made this happen on purpose.” She’s frozen in disbelief; is he...comforting her? “You’re young, and you were desperate. I figure you heard the name of a village and made yerself a story, just to keep yourself secret from those folks who you ran away from ‘fore.”
And while that’s entirely right, why does it feel so wrong, too?
“It’s mighty kind of you, coming all this way and telling me the truth.” Pat, pat...and his hand pulls back. His thick brows recenter on the two who are actual threats. “There’s a lot of convincing to be done if you really mean what you say,” Takuya warns.
“That’s a burden we are willing to bear,” Pain speaks for them both; Konan dips her head in agreement. “How do you suggest we go about showing our regret and gratitude to this village?”
“...They’re sentimental people,” he answers, under his breath after a long pause, like he’s giving secrets to the enemy. “They talk even now about the songs she used to sing. Maybe that can be to your advantage.”
And who else could be the “she” who must bear this burden, with a solution like this at hand? All eyes on her.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage
Called the blood of the exploited working class
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Tunes her guitar, performs and convinces the town. Sees the crowd she’s made, feels a piece of herself die. That’s the summary of what happens next.
The same song is sung, just as when she arranged with new deal with two beings from heaven. Captain, oh captain. I’m a sinner with flaws; make amends with me and try something new. She sings it after Pain does some talking, eases up the crowd for her as they stand in the middle of the town square, place where the summer’s hydrangea festival was. The sun gets lower and twilight makes the sky an unnatural kind of purple. Takuya was right. These folk are sentimental, just like her.
The people are hush for the most part, so as to hear her above the natural rustling of bulky, cold weather clothes and stifled breaths. The girl is finally, finally, brave enough to raise her eyes as the ship shanty comes is about to come to an end, and that’s her biggest mistake.
In the upper right of the sea of faces, there’s one that’s less blurred than the others, one that looks back at the performer like a mirror, feelings just as uneasy about all of this. The owner of the flower shop stares on. She isn’t happy, but it isn’t anger on her face. It’s something worse.
The crowd applauds with a light, respectful attitude before the collective, two by two then exponentially more, comes to decide it’s time to bury the past and look ahead. She can only hope they aren’t mistaking red flags for white ones.
Nails dipped and dried in the color of blood rest upon her shoulder, and though he does not smile, the glance he passes to her assures that she did the best thing. It is never easy to do.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
But they've overcome their shyness
Now they're calling me Your Highness
And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"
Yes, a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

(As you open your door, you see a small demon peering back at you gleefully )
(It appears they have been teleporting to different places to enjoy the festives of hallows eve, not caring for who or what they encounter next)
Conky peers out from behind the door. A demon? Materializing out of thin air with a puff of red smoke? This does not strike him as odd. He's just excited to have company. The door swings open.
Conky is cradling a large pumpkin in one arm and messily eating the guts with the other, as one does. The stringy orange innards contrast against his blue skin, and slimy gobbets of the stuff cling to his pink arm hairs. The splatter of festive autumnal gore extends up to a bit past his elbow, and covers his mouth and shirt. Evidently, he's been going to town.
"Oh, hey there li-" Conky starts through a chipmunk-cheeked mouthful of raw vegetable flesh, before remembering his manners and gulping it down before finishing his sentence. *glurk!* "-li'l guy! Aren't you just the cutest little thing!" He reaches out and pinches the small demon boy(?)'s cheek, smudging it with sticky vegan viscera. "Aww, all dressed up with you're little cape and- ooooh!" he coos, the apparent cuteness of his visitor only now fading in and having an effect on him. He was probably too lost in a pleasure-haze of pumpkin violence to think clearly, but with his mouth now empty, he sees now that the little monster at his doorstep is absolutely adowwable.
He still doesn't seem to mind the whole demon angle, even though there's a big neon red pentagram on the floor that seems to be leaking wispy tendrils of evil red gas into his poorly ventilated home.
"Oooh, I just gotta get you something special! Wait here, I know just the thing!" he says, eagerly rushing into the darkness behind him... hey, why are his lights off? No time to question that, he's back, now pumpkinless, and he's brought... a gun?? Yeah, that is just a straight-up gun.
Tumblr media
"I got this thing a bit ago... some mean guys in the woods shot me a few times with it, then screamed and threw it at me and ran off... I don't really know guns, but I don't think there's any bullets in it, and I don't want it, so you can have it!"
Conky tosses the gun at the small demon, who must scramble to get a hold of it before it falls to the ground. The thing has clearly seen better days, the wood being worn and the metal being rusted... how long has he had this thing? Just how long ago is "a bit ago" in this scenario? Wait, did he say he was shot with it?
Before any of these questions can be pondered too deeply, Conky yells "Happy Hallowe-en!~" with a silly little singsong lilt to it, and his giant horrible door clangs shut, leaving the small demon alone in a dank, smelly stairwell.

“Ah, lips that say one thing, while the heart thinks another.” ( garland / falsestalwart )
THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (BOOK) SENTENCE STARTER  ↳ @falsestalwart
Tumblr media
how many times had they gone through this same song and dance? how many times did she recall rejecting him? or were all those times just dreams - or nightmares really? oh mother, oh father… what would they think if they saw her now? here in this dark place all her hopes for the future seemed to dim. she thought of the prophecy and began to wonder if it was true that the warriors of light would be there to save the world and perhaps even save her. there was nothing here but darkness and it threatened to choke her. it left her scared. what's more was that she also felt scared of garland. his once magnificent armor that glistened in the bright cornelian sunlight was now terrifying to behold. his height had also never truly bothered her before, but now it seemed as if he towered over her and it intimidated her.
and through it all she hated how she felt. she wanted to feel safe with him. she wanted to trust him again, and… though she'd probably never admit it out loud, she wanted to stay with him, to be with him, and forgot that everything that had happened, had never happened. would it be so wrong if she did? she knew it would. she longed for the comfort of his hand in her's again and knew it must never be. that's why she had stood firm (or at least she hoped she had) in admonishing him for she had to return home. there were people back home that loved her, desired her company, and counted on her too. she needed to return.
Tumblr media
"sir garland, i do not understand. why would you do such a cruel thing? i hardly think a rejected marriage proposal is grounds for kidnapping."
the briefest of flashes danced in her mind's eye as she closed her eyes for just a second. the dreams she had had of the two of them dancing, taking lunch in garden, strolling through town for a walk and so much more… all she ever wanted was to be with him despite their social statuses.
of course that was when garland replied, "Ah, lips that say one thing, while the heart thinks another."
her eyes flew open then and she felt the blood rush to her cheeks. she turned her gaze towards the stone flooring and clenched her fists to her side. he knew her so well, and she was rather ashamed to admit that she did want to stay with him, but… wasn't it wrong to want such things under such circumstances? was it wrong to want it even when she could feel the storm of darkness within him that had not been there before?
a soft breeze blew through the cracks in the chaos shrine causing his cape to rustle in the breeze and strands of her mint green hair to rustle as well. it sent a shiver up her spine as her fine, pure white dress danced in the light breeze and she felt goosebumps raise on her arms and her exposed shoulders. she caught of flash of light shimmer in the reflection of the ominous purple crystal behind garland and recognized the object as one of the gifts she had given him long ago. tears sprang forth to her eyes and she wondered why fate had to be so cruel to taunt and tease her so. perhaps everything that had happened in the months before had been leading to this moment - their arrival at the chaos shrine.
Tumblr media
for a second she wondered if he had outstretched her hand to her but she realized that was an image from one of her dreams. she had always woken up before taking it or not taking it - she could never make up her mind, but now… now she knew what choice she would take and she would take that choice with her to the grave. she would never tell another soul in all her life. it was a secret with reasons that she, and she alone, would carry.
she outstretched her hand this time with her bracelet dangling from her wrist and a pained smile on her face, she said, "it is true my heart thinks something else entirely and i feel that we have gone through this before, but this time i am offering myself to you, garland. i will remain here with you and be your companion in these dark times."
until the warriors of light came she would remain here by his side, unwavering in her decision even if those she held dear would hate her for it.

jason and damian hang out on a rooftop after dick gets injured. it goes very fine and normal
complicated emotions about your parents are a gender-neutral experience
“I don't require company, Todd,” Damian says stiffly, from where he’s crouched on the lip of the hospital roof. His arms are crossed, resting on his knees; his whole body is a coil of anger. He’s still wearing the costume. There’s blood on his cape, his gauntlets, a splash of it across one shoulder. In the light drifting up from the street below, it looks black. Eleven floors below them, Dick Grayson is hooked up to three IVs, a respirator, and a heart rate monitor whose steady beep fails to be reassuring. The official story is that he’d been hit by a bus. The unofficial story is that Talia al Ghul had been in town, and Nightwing had gotten in between her and her son.

Eight home kitchens finished with tactile brick floors
Our latest lookbook collects eight houses from around the world that feature kitchens with tactile brick floors, including a mid-century home in the USA and a coastal dwelling in Denmark. Widely used for their durability and low maintenance, bricks are a long-time favourite material across the fields of architecture, interiors and design. They are most commonly used on walls and patios, but also popular as internal flooring because of their ability to add rich, earthy tones and tactile qualities to an interior.  While brick flooring may conjure up images of old rustic farmhouses, this roundup shows how they can also be adapted to suit contemporary homes around the world.  The examples below include those that have been arranged in herringbone format, used as a backdrop to oak cabinetry or designed to connect homes to their matching patios outside. This is the latest in our lookbooks series, which provides visual inspiration from Dezeen's archive. For more inspiration, see previous lookbooks featuring conversation pits, autumnal living rooms and lavish members' clubs.

THE FLYING RED HORSE MAGNOLIA'S FLYING RED HORSE When the 400-foot-tall Magnolia Petroleum building opened in 1922, it was the city’s first skyscraper – and tallest building west of the Mississippi River. With 29 floors and seven elevators, the Magnolia building towered over the nearby Adolphus Hotel, built in 1913. The Magnolia also was first high rise in the United States to have air conditioning, according to the management company that acquired the building in 1997. Today, with much of the original architecture’s classical design and gold leaf restored in 1999, the Dallas Magnolia Hotel has become a “boutique hotel” blending its past with modern amenities. After the 1922 opening, a local reporter described the Magnolia – which cost the oil company $4 million to build – as “a great peg driven into the ground holding Dallas in its place.” In 1925, when Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony) acquired Magnolia Petroleum Company, the Dallas headquarters building was included. Nine years later Pegasus would land on the roof. The flying red horses began their journey in 1911, when a Vacuum Oil Company subsidiary in Cape Town, South Africa, first trademarked the Pegasus logo. Based in Rochester, New York, Vacuum Oil had built a successful petroleum lubricants business around an 1869 patent by its founder, Hiram Everest, long before gasoline was even a branded product. At first, a stylized red gargoyle advertised the company, which produced the earliest petroleum-based lubricants for horse-drawn carriages and steam engines. The Pegasus trademark proved to be a more enduring image. In Greek mythology, Pegasus – a winged horse – carried thunderbolts for Zeus. By 1931 growth of the automobile industry expanded the Vacuum Oil product lineup to include Pegasus Spirits and Mobilgas – later simplified to Mobil. When Standard Oil of New York and Vacuum Oil combine to form Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, the new company adopted the familiar winged trademark, as does an affiliate, Magnolia Petroleum. It took a year to build the rotating 35-foot by 40-foot Pegasus sign. It first beamed its red neon glow in 1934, welcoming the first annual meeting to be held in Dallas by the American Petroleum Institute. For decades the emblem slowly rotated above the growing city as corporate consolidations and mergers changed Socony-Vacuum ownership. In 1955 the name of the company changed to Socony Mobil Oil; in 1966 became just Mobil Oil.
A neon Pegasus displayed at the 1939 New York World’s Fair found its way to a Mobil gas station in Casa Linda, Texas, and later to the Old Red Museum of Dallas County History & Culture – where it’s on exhibit today. In 1974 the petroleum icon’s motor ground to a halt. Mobile Oil moved out of the Magnolia building three years later and sold the aging skyscraper and glowing but unmoving sign to the city of Dallas. Twenty-years later, Pegasus’ neon lights finally went out. As a Denver-based developer restored and transformed the deteriorating Magnolia building into a luxurious 330 room hotel in the late 1990s, a group of patrons and corporate partners joined in to bring the broken and rusty Pegasus sign back to life. They raised more than $600,000 for the project Project Pegasus targeted New Year’s Eve of 1999 and dawn of the new millennium to reintroduce Dallas citizens to their petroleum heritage landmark. Restoration of the 8,000-pound sign proved challenging. The derrick-like tower structure was reparable and the old mechanical rotation system could be updated with new technology. But time and weather had damaged the porcelain coated steel signage and neon tubing. New 16-gauge steel panels had to be cut, using the originals as templates. Only two facilities in the United States were large enough to accommodate baking the emblematic red porcelain onto the new panels; fortunately, both were in Dallas. More than 1,000 feet of new neon tubing was required to trace the familiar outlines as craftsmen and technicians remained faithful to the original. The efforts of all were rewarded at midnight on December 31, 1999, when fireworks and millennium celebrations welcomed Pegasus back to the Dallas skyline. Problems led to the sign being turned off in March 2013 until restored in June by Starlite Sign of Denton, Texas. Although cost of fixing the machinery that once turned the structure was too high to attempt, even stationary, “the new lights will glow from dusk until dawn,” said a city official. The public art manager for the Office of Cultural Affairs manages its maintenance. Kay Kallos, manager of the department proclaimed, “The Pegasus sign is a beloved icon of the city of Dallas.” Courtesy Historical Society of American Oil and Gas."
