Nightmare Shenanigans with Rory: Beacon Dance
Ciel: Nightingale?
Rory: How many times do we have to be over this? You can call me “Rory”, using my last name makes me feel if I’m in trouble.
Ciel: Rory, I have proposition. You and I go to the dance.
Rory: Are you asking me out?
Weiss: Excuse me, Rory, I was wondering if you’d accompany me to the dance.
Rory: Uhh…
Ciel: Apologize Miss Schnee, but he will be accompanying me to the dance.
Weiss: You? Surely, you’re joking.
Ciel: Well, he and I are more acquainted than you. Isn’t that correct, Rory?
Weiss: He’s been quite open to me and I’d say we have a close bond, right Rory?
Rory: Um, I uhhh… I don’t know… please stop yelling…
Weiss: He’s going with me!
Ciel: No, with me!
*Suddenly, Rory wakes up in his bed*
Flint: You good man? You were screaming.
Rory: Yeah, bad nightmare.
Flint: Was it the girls fighting again?
Rory: Yep.
Flint: You really gotta learn to say “no.”

An Arranged Marriage, part 5
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4
M!troll x f!reader
1.3k words and finally getting at least into fluff
You did not like whatever Zen’jan was hiding, and the way he looked upset to see you when you found him upset you more than you thought it could. Back home Zen’jan is acting off, something weighing on him heavily that he seems hesitant to talk about.
————
Zen’jan sat down at the hearth and immediately began arranging the wood and coals to get it lit. The two of you had walked home in complete silence and he seemed to plan on keeping that up.
“Are we going to talk about whatever that was?” you asked, annoyed.
“Come sit with me, please” he asked, almost begging.
“If I sit with you will you tell me what’s going on?”
“Yes, but please just come sit with me” he was really was begging. He looked desperate and just sad, staring up at you looking more like a wet house cat than a king’s advisor and war hero.
Hesitantly you sat next to him at the hearth instead of across from him as usual and he scooted closer to you until his leg was against yours.
“I am sorry that I left this morning without saying anything” he began, he was not looking at you and instead busied himself with arranging the wood and coals in the hearth some more. “I did not know how to talk to you and just needed space to think”.
“Then why not tell me that earlier?”
“Because I could not think clearly earlier, and it is still hard to find the words now”.
“The find whatever words you can, but please tell me what’s wrong, I was worried about you” now you understood how he must have felt the other day when you were in bed and not telling him what the problem was. It was not a good feeling.
He reached past you to where the flint and steel sat on your other side, leaning against you a bit and almost nuzzling his cheek against the side of your head for a moment.
“It is not usually a big deal, just a normal part of life but I do not think humans have it, so I was not sure how to explain” still he did not look at you, but instead lit the hearth.
Once more he reached past you, this time leaning a lot of his weight against you and very much nuzzling against you when he went to grab the bag in grain.
“What in the world are you doing?” you snapped at him more than you intended to.
“I am sorry, I was trying to give you space like always this morning, but it was proving hard, that is part of why I needed to clear my head and left”.
He had been unusually close to you ever since you left Ba’tual’s house. Walking close enough to you so that his arm brushed against you and moving closer if you stepped away. The pleading for you to sit next to him, the leaning and nuzzling against you, it was weird for him.
“So what’s with all the touching?” you asked.
“It is usually not like this for me, though this is also the first time I have ever had someone in my life this time of year so that may have something to do with it” he trailed off.
“Can you just tell me what’s going on?”
A long silence hung heavy in the air while Zen’jan seemed to gather his thoughts, “I do not know how to say everything in common exactly, but it is a very old thing for us. Early trolls could only have children at certain times of the year, and it is not like that anymore, but some of the… impulses remain” he was fidgeting with the flint and steel, turning them over and over in his hands.
“Impulses?” you pushed him, you figured you knew what he meant now but wanted the clarification anyways.
“It is different for everyone, with how much we have changed over thousands of years and the migrations, and really it has never bothered me much. A little annoying, but nothing I could not handle myself”.
“And now?” you pushed again.
“And now, I just desperately want to be close to you. That is all, I swear”.
You regarded him closely, leaning forward to try to see his face where he had his head hung. He looked embarrassed, refusing to meet your gaze.
“And so you left this morning because you didn’t know how to say that?”
“Yes, because I feel like a flustered teen in his first rut and all I want is to be close to you. I could not stop watching you when was setting up for breakfast. I just wanted to sit at your side and run my fingers through your hair, to rest my head against yours, to just be close. I could not think and it felt so awful, and I did not want to burden you with my problems”.
“Oh” you said softly. It was not what you expected, none of it was.
“I can stay with Bira or Ba in the meantime, just for a week or so. I do not want you to be uncomfortable or to ask for more than you are willing to give. I have already probably asked too much of you” he said as he scooted away from you a bit. At this point he had turned to face away from you, very flustered by everything.
You instead scooted back closer to him and leaned your forehead into his shoulder, “I can learn to be comfortable being close, if it’ll help you”.
Ba’tual was right, you probably should be kinder to Zen’jan. He was still sleeping on the floor every night to give you space, he spent a week taking care of you and waiting on you hand and foot when you were on your period, he made you breakfast every morning and dinner every night, he left you little gifts around the house, and you still flinched and shied away whenever he was close.
“You do not have to do that, but I appreciate it” he said without looking at you.
“I suppose you are my husband, and you do so much for me, so I want to be more comfortable around you”.
You felt him lean his weight back against you without saying a word, but you saw the shift in his body language, the tension drop from his shoulders.
“If you are alright with it, may I hold you?” he asked.
You nodded against his shoulders.
Slowly he shifted to face you and pulled you against his chest so that you sat between his legs. He wrapped his arms around you and pressed his forehead against the top of your head, his tusks brushing the sides of your head at this angle.
Being this close to him was weird feeling but not unpleasant. His size enveloped you completely and you could hear his heart racing with your head pressed to his chest. He smelled like incense and something warm and dark you could not place your finger on.
Once more you felt him nuzzling his face against you and you could hear a soft trilling sound, almost a purr from his chest.
“So, the nuzzling, does that have to do with all this?” you asked.
He froze, his face still pressed against you and the trilling stopped “Oh”.
“Oh?”
“I am sorry, it is just an impulse. I can stop” he apologized.
“It’s alright, I was just curious, you don’t have to stop”.
You felt him resume rubbing his face on your head and you hear the sound begin again.
“Trolls used to do this so that their partner would smell like them, though most of us do not have the actual ability to do it, but the impulse remains”.
You smiled into his chest, “You remind me of a big cat”.
“A cat? I do suppose that is rather fitting” you could hear his smile as he spoke.
“You even sort of purr like one” you teased.
“Ahh, that, yeah. I do not know exactly how or why exactly, but if I am happy and relaxed enough it happens”.
“So are you happy then?”
“More than I have been in many years”.

Currently rereading Eric Flint's 1632 and reflecting on just how influential Flint was to me and my approach to both praxis and politics as a teenager. I found Flint when I was about thirteen or fourteen, around the time I found Pratchett I think, and he's left an equally wide thumbprint on my soul. Isn't that the most wonderful thing about stories, that people you've never met can help shape our adult selves? Mother of Demons I often recommend for its SFF worldbuilding--Flint built a species with at least four genders, only some of which are reproductive, and associated "normal" sexual orientations, and then proceeded to write in a textually intersex character and queer the hell out of it.
1632, though, is the one where a little West Virginia town in 2000 gets picked up and dropped in the middle of Thuringia, Germany in the eponymous year--right in the middle of the Thirty Years War. The local United Mine Workers of America chapter plays a major role, particularly its head.
As I write this I'm listening to the scene where the little town of Grantville, having admitted after a few days that they are probably not ever going home, is crowded into the high school gymnasium listening to the mayor lay that reality out and suggesting an interim council to help the town set out a sort of constitutional convention so they can work out what on earth they're going to do moving forward--especially since there's a bunch of displaced refugees collecting in the forests nearby. Sensible of them, really; the Americans murdered the shit out of the local soldiers that displaced them, on account of how the shaken mine workers that went out to figure out WTF happened not being super down with suddenly running into a bunch of fuckheads raping the locals and torturing people to find out where their valuables might be. After that, said Americans proceeded to retreat into the town boundaries and gibber quietly to themselves. I would go lurk in their woods, too.
Anyway, the mayor sets up this proposal, everyone agrees, and a CEO who was visiting for his son's wedding at the time steps forward and says: look. I know how to lead, and I'm probably the most qualified person here. I lead a major industry corporation effectively and I did that after my time as a Navy officer. I put myself forward because I'm qualified. Now, we're going to need to circle the wagons to get through the winter, tighten our belts, but we can get through this. We can't support all these refugees, though; we'll have to seal the border so they can't bring disease--they're a drain on our resources we can't afford--
and the UMWA guy, he gets really mad listening to this. There's this Sephardic refugee woman he's real taken with who got swept up in the town first thing, and she's sitting in and listening; he's thinking about throwing her out, thinking about how much she knows about the place they're found in, and he's furious. But he gets a good grip on his anger and he marches up and he says, look. This dude has been here two days and he's already talking about downsizing?! You're going to listen to this CEO talking about cuts, cuts, cuts? Nah. Trying to circle the wagons is probably impossible, it's stupid, and if you think my men and I are going to enforce that, you can fuck off. That proposal is inside out and bass ackwards. We've got about a six mile diameter of Grantville here; how much food do YOU think we're going to grow? How about the soldiers wandering around, do you think we're going to be able to fight armies off on our lonesome? Look at the few refugees we already have in the room, they'll tell you how those armies will treat you! We could do it for a while, the amount of gun nuts here, but so what? We don't have enough people to shoot them! Not if we're going to do anything else to keep us going! We have about six months of stockpiled coal to keep going, and without another source or getting the coal mines working, we're screwed. We have technical strength but we don't have the supplies or resources we would need to maintain it. Those refugees? They're resources. We need people to do the work we will need to keep ourselves. The hell with downsizing; let's grow outwards! Bring people in, give them safety, see what they can bring to the table once they've had a moment! He invokes: send us your tired, your poor!, and the CEO yells in frustration: this isn't America! so he yells back "it will be!"
And of course everyone cheers. I love Flint for many reasons but he is unapologetic about affection for the America of ideals--ideals, he freely admits, that are often honored in the breach rather than the observance, ideals that are messy and flawed, but nevertheless ideals that can work to inspire us to become the best version of ourselves. For Flint, history is as valuable as a source of stories to inspire ourselves as it is a repository of knowledge, and on this I tend to agree with him. We must learn from our moments of shame but equally we must learn from moments that show us how to be our best selves.
It's been twenty three years and the text is now an interesting historical document in its own right, hitting points and rhythms in beats that are sometimes out of place today. It's not perfect. But the novel contains a commitment to joy and to emphasizing the leaps of faith and understanding that regular, everyday people make every day to try and support each other that I routinely try to match in my writing.
Anyway, one of the strengths of the novel, I think, is its gender politics: it's a very ensemble kind of novel, lots of characters, and it's preoccupied with positive masculinity in a lot of ways. There's a lot of these hyper masculine characters--Mike Stearns perhaps more than anyone else--and--and...
... And Flint's characterization of Stearns, as he sketches out who the man is--his pivotal American leader, ex boxer, working class organizer, big man.... well, it lands equally on "he is delighted and astonished to find a local woman who quickly assesses how the cushion of air in tires works," and "he considers who to set up a Jewish refugee in the middle of Germany up with and he thinks to ask the Jewish family he grew up with to host her and her ill father because he thinks she'll be most comfortable there", and "he views people as potential assets rather than potential drains." A younger man asks him for advice on whether to pursue a professional sports career because of the boxing and he says no, you're in the worst place of not being quite good enough and you'll blow out your knees without accomplishing safety. He frames that interaction such that he allows his own experiences to make him vulnerable and invite the younger man to understand when a struggle have worth it.
It's actually a really deft portrayal of intense masculinity that also makes a virtue of a bunch of traits more usually associated with women: empathy, relational sensitivity, the ability to listen. As a blueprint for what a positive masculinity can look like, vs the toxic kind, it's very well done. I think sometimes when we look at gender roles in terms of virtues, and when masculinity is defined in terms of opposition to femininity, people get lost by arguing that virtues assigned to one gender are somehow antithetical to another gender. In fact that's never been the case: virtues are wholly neutral and can appear in any gender. What the gender does is inflect the ways we expect that virtue to appear in terms of individuals' actions within their society.
Gender isn't purely an individual trait, basically; it's a product of our collective associations. Two characters with different genders can display the same virtues and strengths, but we imagine them expressed in different ways according to our cultural expectations around gender. And I just think that's neat.

Enough ranting have some epic Manager Origins headcanonss
I’m still trying to work on ones for Brian and Mary
Buck was made as a casino mascot, the casino shut down after a while but Buck was still left standing!
Misty was built to kinda predict the weather if that makes sense, a combination of different weather tools built to give accurate estimates
Holly was built specifically as a knight, a gatekeeper as you will, basically meant to keep her city safe
Prester was built as a haunt animatronic in Salem with the popularity of witches and witch hunters due to that being the home of yknow the Salem witch trials, because he was based off that time period thats why his speech is all old timey
Ben was built as a bellboy, he was specifically built for the Golden Rose Resort
Cathal was originally just built to raise sales, but Allan got incredibly attached to the idea of being a parent to this cog, and so yeah
Belle was built specifically as a telephone operator, built by Axel Hander Glad Bell CO. Basically at the inception of it
Dave was built as a musical entertainment animatronic, built for older audiences and was built in an older generation.
Flint is a furnace. Wow.
Ok in all seriousness they were straight up built as a furnace, technically originally as a firefighter but they kinda immediately realized how stupid that was, that would explain the firefighter esc appearance though. Fun fact they eat coal and wood.
Cosmo was built specifically for COGS.inc. I don’t have much to put here
Spruce and Chip were both built for the purpose of harvesting wood, and were built around the same time.
Tawney was built as a children’s story time animatronic, who would read coglings books at libraries.
Graham was an entertainment animatronic built for racing and music, unlike Dave he was built for younger audiences, and was built in a newer generation, being built in the 80’s
Also bonus doodle with tawney!
