JKR is transphobic. She has used her platform to spread misinformation and personal attacks on trans people and women with unconfirmed DSD. She should absolutely be held accountable for that. That contradicts her feminism. But I don’t agree on your point about the books.

Yeah because the main character is male and the story is from his perspective so of course it focused on his friendships. 

Yes, we get to see mild friendships like Luna and Ginny or Hermione and Ginny.

Luna is a character who is ostracized and bullied. She doesn’t have any friends until the DA so her friendship with Ginny and Hermione isn’t mild. She has a mural of their faces on her ceiling. That’s how meaningful they are. 

 Why couldn’t Hermione have a group of girlfriends she hung out with when the boys got annoying?? Couldn’t she have a female friend or two that she really got along with?

This is an essential part of Hermione’s story. She starts book 1 as shy, nerdy, and not having friends. After the troll incident she has a connection with Harry and Ron. She doesn’t have connections with girls intentionally because it brings her and the boys closer. JKR wrote her based on her own experiences of being plain and bookish and not having that make for popularity in school. 

We know Ginny is popular and I’m assuming Lily was somewhat popular too, who are their friends then (don’t say Neville and Luna because she had to have more friends than that! And I refuse to believe Snape was Lily’s only friend)?? Why wasn’t there any mention about Harry’s godmother?? Did Molly really never have any friends to let off some steam? The same thing with Tonks and Fleur?? Why couldn’t Hermione have a group of girlfriends she hung out with when the boys got annoying?? Couldn’t she have a female friend or two that she really got along with?

Again this series of from Harrys perspective. There is a lot we don’t know about these characters because he isn’t around to see it. Ginny is in a different year than Harry so it’s not like there’s any reason for him to interact with her friends. Also yeah she’s popular but most people only have a few friends who are true intimate real friendships so saying Neville and Luna isn’t irrelevant. 

Lily is seen is a couple of flashbacks that were Snape’s memories so it’s biased to only show them. There’s no evidence that he has a godmother. Would be nice if he did but having a godparent that wasn’t in prison would’ve led to him not being raised by the Dursleys which fundamentality changes the story. 

Molly is only seen when she is around Harry and when Harry is there she is also raising her children. Ask any stay at home mother with 7 kids who lives in the middle of the country if they have an active social life. We do not see how she spends her time when the kids are at school because it’s not Harry’s purview. 

Fleur is only even seen as the champion and bill fiancé. Would it have been nice to give her more of a backstory, yes, but it’s not relevant to Harry’s story. 

Tonks is the same as being seen through the lens of an auror and an order member because that is how she interacts with Harry. 

HP is a misogynistic series written by a self proclaimed feminist.

The women in Harry Potter are not myopic. They are allowed to not just fit into a single mold of womanhood. They are nerdy, brave, traumatized, optimistic, strong, fragile, good, evil, kind, cruel, conflicted, beautiful, plain, ugly, rational, or dreamers. 

We see them grieve, betray, rebel, make friendships, walk away from them, fight, lose, kill to protect and kill out of cruelty. We see them as sporty, frilly, ambitious and we see them evolve and grow up. 

I get that hating on JKR is standard practice and it breaks my heart to see who she has become but these books are such a part of how I and a lot of people grew up and a lot of these female characters are inspirations.

He does. I don't think it changes much since we specifically know he doesn't find Fluer attractive considering how unaffected he is by her veela magic.

As for the detailed descriptions. In my post about Harry probably being gay I mentioned in a POV more details would be appropriate whenever something is important or striking. This means that if something or someone just looks very unique, Harry would still add more detail because it's different and noticeable. It's something he would pay attention to.

He does so with Umbridge, for example:

Dumbledore’s head was inclined toward the woman sitting next to him, who was talking into his ear. She looked, Harry thought, like somebody’s maiden aunt: squat, with short, curly, mouse-brown hair in which she had placed a horrible pink Alice band that matched the fluffy pink cardigan she wore over her robes. Then she turned her face slightly to take a sip from her goblet and he saw, with a shock of recognition, a pallid, toadlike face and a pair of prominent, pouchy eyes.

He doesn't think she's attractive, he literally says she looks toadlike. But her appearance is striking in how ugly she is, so Harry goes into a lot of detail describing her. He does so when describing Dumbledore's robes too, because they are striking in their oddness and color.

Fleur, as a quarter veela, is striking in her beauty and perfection, so Harry goes into detail when he sees her up close. Notice the details he pays attention to are the veela ones that would be noticeable since they aren't fully human: her willowy frame, blond hair that glows, large eyes, and very white teeth. The way he phrases it is about drawing attention to how oddly perfect she looks: "To complete this vision of perfection", as you quoted.

I have a question about Fleur. You and a lot of other people act like she is this unfairly victimized character, but if I remember correctly, wasn't she really rude in canon?

It seems like you're genuinely asking and not just bashing the character, so I'll give you an honest answer.

I feel like Fleur tends to be treated by her stans in a similar way that Percy is (see this post). She's an interesting character because she is flawed, but then antis will go so far overboard with criticism that it causes a knee-jerk reaction to just say, "You know what? Forget it. She's perfect."

She has a lot of great qualities that are often overlooked. She is brave, fiercely loyal to the people she loves, and willing to forgive others (such as Molly & Ginny).

She's also more relatable than people tend to realize. Yes, she's this gorgeous part veela character, but some of her experiences are pretty consistent with any other person on the planet.

For example, look at this scene from Book 4 after the Second Task:

“Fleur Delacour, though she demonstrated excellent use of the Bubble-Head Charm, was attacked by grindylows as she approached her goal, and failed to retrieve her hostage. We award her twenty-five points.” Applause from the stands. “I deserved zero,” said Fleur throatily, shaking her magnificent head.

Most of us have felt self-critical and disappointed in ourselves at one point or another.

In that same book, it's clear that Fleur has a crush on Cedric & is constantly trying to flirt with him, yet when she asks him to the Yule Ball, he turns her down to go with Cho instead.

Again, most of us know what rejection feels like, so we can see ourselves in that situation.

Is Fleur flawed as well? Of course. Everyone is.

She can definitely be arrogant and rude:

“She looked at me like I was a sea slug or something. Didn’t even answer..."

Meanwhile Fleur Delacour was criticizing the Hogwarts decorations to Roger Davies. “Zis is nothing,” she said dismissively, looking around at the sparkling walls of the Great Hall. “At ze Palace of Beauxbatons, we ’ave ice sculptures all around ze dining chamber at Chreestmas. So clearly, Fleur is not perfect, but one of the major problems is that JKR seems to constantly exaggerate secondary female character's flaws (like Fleur, Lavender, Parvati, etc.) to fit in with the negative stereotype of feminine women.

Plus, it's very frustrating that Fleur is the only female competitor in the Triwizard Tournament, and yet she consistently does worse than her male counterparts on each task. That's misogyny and absolute BS on JKR's part.

So to summarize, Fleur fans do tend to be very protective of her (to the point of erasing her flaws), but it's a direct result/backlash of fandom's/society's opinion on the worth of feminine women.

Any headcanons about Fleur? I feel she’s very underrated…

Fleur is underrated, it's true! For me, what makes her interesting to think about, though, are all the ways in which she's flawed, complex, and elusive as a character and also, frankly, a bit of a dickhead with some room to grow. In some fandom spaces, there's a tendency to sanctify Fleur (coming particularly from the anti-Weasley sides of the fandom), and portray her as a victim of horrible bullying that she never deserved, which I don't agree with. Do Molly, Hermione and Ginny cover themselves in glory in their initial approach to Fleur? Of course not. But for all her many strengths, Fleur gets off on the wrong foot with Bill's family in part because she can be a bit of a rude and inconsiderate houseguest, thoughtless in her remarks, and occasionally vain in ways that make sense but that do demand a bit of introspection and self-improvement.

I do think it's clear that Fleur's experience coming of age in a world that sexualised her from a young age was both formative and deeply harmful in ways I think she would have to unpack and unlearn as an adult. Patriarchy conditions Fleur's worldview: it also shapes how other female characters respond to her. Everyone's losing. Whenever I've written Fleur, I've tried to give her lines that portray her as someone disarmingly honest, rarely meaning to wound, but certainly a bit tactless and bearing the unexamined scars of a childhood and adolescence that sexualised her young, hardened her and made her feel like appearance and looks are a currency. In Orchards, it's the line about Fleur giving Ginny her an expensive-looking French conditioner for her birthday. (‘It will help with – how do you say - ah, split-ends' - like, kind to give Ginny a present, but comes off as patronising and a criticism of Ginny's appearance, especially to an already unimpressed and unforgiving audience). The bit I just put in Beasts is me trying to flag this sense I work with her of her as a character: ''You are very pretty, even if you do not try,’ Fleur had said, that afternoon. (Her sister-in-law always did like her compliments backhanded.)' ‘Boys will like your ’air, if you do it nicely. Remember, if you take care of your looks, zey will take care of you.’'

A only have a couple of headcanons for ya, none of which are very ground-breaking, forgive me!

I think of Fleur as a solitary person, with a strong sense of self and little interest in explaining her inner life to others. I think Bill and Fleur's relationship is the meeting of two similarly self-sufficient people who find a sort of calm together, but that isn't defined by emotional co-dependency.

I like to think Fleur moved back to England for work as an adult because the Triwizard Tournament was both emotionally and politically formative for her. The circumstances in which the tournament ended struck at her own strong sense of justice, but she also felt drawn to a place where she had been changed, in some way. I think there's something in going back to places that changed you but that you feel you have unfinished business with. Her crush on Bill was secondary to her pursuing that more elusive feeling, following up on a question mark

I like to think Fleur benefits a lot from her relationship with her sisters-in-law as an adult, albeit slowly and quietly. While I love the idea of her and Ginny being able to talk about why they clashed years later, I don't ever really imagine Fleur as being best mates with Ginny, but I think both come to a place of mutual respect, unspoken but deeply felt, and that they admire each other as parents a great deal. I think a more mature and reflective adult Fleur would be intensely sympathetic to the ways Ginny was almost certainly harassed and sexualised in the wizarding press as a figure in the public eye.

HOWEVER victoire and dominique are the ultimate soulmates. it doesn’t matter how much they fight, they’re very close. dominique rants to her and sends her memes victoire can’t understand and victoire will still pay for dom’s meals when theyre out bcuz it doesn’t matter how old dominique is, she is still her little sister. and victoire retains every last piece of dom’s friendship group drama, and stalks them all on social media silently judging the shit out of them

very outwardly polite and nice to other people but always retains a sense of distance. she wants to be close to people but she doesn’t know how to build those connections— she’s very scared of being hurt or betrayed so she sticks with people she’s already known before her walls went up.

used to be a little dictator when her, dom, and louis played games around shell cottage. she would make all the rules and be very strict about following it all. dom and louis were useless at games without her, because they couldnt make rules where there were stakes and it wasn’t fun without them. yknow, older sibling shenanigans.

I saw Fleur with Dekker, and I love it!

Finally, a family member giving Dekker space, yet actively trying. That is all he wants after being kept in a shallow relationship with Cater and being smothered by their parents and sisters.

So Dekker hiding in a tree then stealing the flowers is definitely something he’d do. And Fleur might end up the one closest to Dekker, though it might still take some time.
