In the end, it was an adventure. My birthday... was an adventure.
Because the freezing rain.
Because the freezing rain.
I won’t lie. That was really a game-changer.
We heard it was coming, of course. So Kimmer made sure that last night we started the official birthday celebration proceedings after work with a visit to ‘Lil Woody’s for a pair of their classic burgers followed by the Avatar: Way of Water extravaganza next door at the Majestic Bay Theatres. After which we ended the night, the night before my birthday, my birthday Eve...
At Pub70 on the waterfront for a Winter Ale (Kimmer) and a Guiness Nitro (me).
Heckuva way to start a birthday.  😁
Then we woke up this morning to water droplets literally frozen to our windows.
So that happened.
After starting our morning with a cleverly crafted birthday card from Kimmer, my wonderful birthday presents, and a birthday breakfast centered around crescent rolls stuffed with sausage... we then bore witness to a lot of cars losing control on ice that didn’t look like ice but looked like regular pavement. And then the same thing for people who were trying to just stand upright... who suddenly, uncontrollably, found themselves sliding down streets, sidewalks, and driveways.
No joke.
So we took all of that as verified evidence that we should remain indoors for the duration. Until, as was foretold by every weather prediction, the temperature rose enough to melt that frozen water. That invisible ice.
How did we pass our time, then? My birthday?
Well, Kimmer took to an afternoon of cooking and baking. And me, I took inventory of all the gifts “Santa” had procured for my lovely wife, then wrapped them all so that all I’ve gotta do tomorrow, tomorrow night, or first thing Christmas morning, is to fashion them with strings or ribbons, a sticker, and perhaps a bow. No sweat.
Round about first sign of dark, the drawn curtain of evening, we decided to walk the decidedly melting sidewalks of our neighborhood to gather Linzy then take the light rail to Pioneer Square and Flatstick Pub for dinner, a round of miniature golf (a tough one, at that), as well as a bit of time indulging some family photo ops as well as photographing some of the Henry art adorning the walls of this clever space crafted from Underground Seattle.
By 830 we were back on the hill to drop off Linzy and gather up her birthday gift to me: a fine and tasty cherry jam that’ll absolutely find its use (if not its end) over the next few days.
By 9 we were home. For an especially tasty chocolate birthday cake Kimmer made for me and over which she sang me a Happy Birthday before I blew out all the candles save one (which she helped me blow out ;-)).
After that, we finished off the day with The Man Who Invented Christmas and then off to bed.
I had friends who, in the course of wishing me a Happy Birthday, expressed some concern that my birthday was being derailed by an act of Mother Nature.
But on the contrary.
The whole ordeal made my birthday an epic experience.
One we’ll not soon forget.
😁 😁 😁

Pride Journey: Lake Tahoe
By Joey Amato, Guest Contributor
Tumblr media
Bordering California and Nevada is the iconic town of Lake Tahoe. The destination seamlessly blends natural splendor with vibrant urban life. Surrounded by the majestic Sierra Nevada, this charming city is a year-round haven for outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and those looking for a retreat into nature's embrace.
Lake Tahoe enjoys a prime location on the shores of the largest alpine lake in North America. The city is surrounded by towering mountain peaks creating a stunning backdrop for every activity and adding an extra layer of allure to the area. The lake itself, with its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking panoramas, serves as the centerpiece of the region's natural beauty, making it a great destination to visit year-round.
Boasting a plethora of outdoor activities during the warmer months, the lake becomes a playground for water sports enthusiasts, offering opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing, and sailing. Miles of hiking and biking trails wind through the surrounding mountains, providing stunning views of the lake and the surrounding wilderness.
Come winter, the city transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting skiers and snowboarders to its world-class ski resorts. The city is in close proximity to popular resorts like Heavenly Mountain Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe, providing access to pristine slopes and top-notch amenities. The crisp mountain air, snow-covered landscapes, and vibrant après-ski scene make Lake Tahoe a premier destination for winter sports enthusiasts.
Tumblr media
Beyond its natural wonders, Lake Tahoe offers a vibrant entertainment and nightlife scene. The city is home to numerous restaurants, bars, and cafes catering to a variety of tastes. The bustling Heavenly Village is a hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment, featuring a range of boutiques, art galleries, and live entertainment venues. One of my favorite venues in Heavenly Village is The Loft, a combination of a restaurant and theater featuring upscale tapas and fabulous cocktails.
On my visit to The Loft, I enjoyed the Ahi Tuna ceviche which was complimented with mango and avocado ceviche as well as the Roasted Tomato Bisque with lump crabmeat. I try to eat healthy when I travel, but I couldn’t resist the White Chocolate bread pudding. I hiked earlier in the day, so I wasn’t that worried about the calories. After dinner, I caught the magic show by Chipper Lowell. With an unusual blend of stand-up, improvisation, and magic, Chipper has twice been honored with the Merlin award for “Comedy Magician of the Year” by the International Magicians Society. He was also named as one of the “Top Funniest Magicians” performing today by Magic Magazine.
Tumblr media
For those feeling lucky, the famed casinos on the Nevada side of the border add a touch of excitement to the Lake Tahoe experience. Try your hand at the tables or enjoy a show, making for a lively evening in town. If gambling isn’t your thing, head to Flatstick Pub for indoor mini-golf and drinks.
Lake Tahoe also boasts cultural and historical attractions that provide insight into the area's rich past. The Tallac Historic Site offers a glimpse into the region's pioneer days, with well-preserved estates and museums showcasing the history of the destination. The area's Native American heritage is celebrated at the Valhalla Tahoe Heritage and Arts Center.
The region places a strong emphasis on environmental conservation and sustainable tourism. Efforts to protect the lake's clarity and preserve its natural beauty involve community initiatives, responsible development practices, and ongoing partnerships between local businesses and environmental organizations such as the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council, a lake-wide collaborative effort to protect the lake.
I stayed at two different properties during my visit. The first is Coachman Hotel, which is located within blocks of Heavenly Village. The multi-building property was originally built in 1960 as two separate motels but was combined in the 1980’s. The hotel offers comfortable rooms, complimentary Stumptown coffee and nightly s’mores if your heart desires. The property features a fitness center, pool, hot tub, multiple fire pits and occasionally you may spot a ‘friendly’ black bear. I happened to cross paths with her on the first night of my stay. It was quite dark, and I couldn’t tell if the figure I was seeing was a statue…until it started walking. She walked past me and once my heart started beating again, I slowly made my way to the lobby. Only in Lake Tahoe!
The is a chance of spotting a black bear during your trip to Lake Tahoe. If you do, it is best to keep your distance. Visitors should not approach the bears nor feed them. For more information on what you should do if you encounter a bear, visit Bear League’s website.
After a wonderful night’s sleep, I woke up early the next morning and headed to the lobby for breakfast. The reception desk doubles as a bar where guests can enjoy breakfast in the morning and cocktails later in the day, unless you’d like a mimosa with breakfast. I decided to try the overnight oats with berries. It was so good, I had it on both mornings of my stay at Coachman Hotel. After my healthy breakfast, I had some time to kill, so I took a leisurely walk to Lakeside Beach where I got my first glimpse of the glistening lake.
If you’re looking to keep up with your yoga practice, head to Bliss Experiences and take one of their Sustainable Stability classes. It was exactly what I needed to work out all the stiffness from traveling the day before. During the warmer months, Bliss offers a variety of outdoor yoga experiences, including paddle yoga and beach yoga. I also had the chance to have an oracle reading, which turned out to be fairly accurate and echoed what a psychic told me the following day.
For lunch, head to Sidellis, an LGBTQ-owned restaurant/bar which serves a great selection of pub fare including a delicious French Dip. The owner was slinging drinks on the day I visited and told me about his vision for the establishment. Sidellis offers diners a selection of Barrel Aged beers, seasonal beers as well as ciders.
Tumblr media
If you have time, hop on the Sunset Champagne Cruise to Emerald Bay organized by Tahoe Cruises. The two-hour voyage takes guests to picturesque Emerald Bay which is one of the most photographed locations in Lake Tahoe. You’ll come up close to Vikingsholm mansion which was built in 1928 by Lora Knight and is considered one of the grandest homes in the region. Knight built the Scandinavian-inspired home because Emerald Bay reminded her of the fjords of Norway. Be sure to bring a jacket as the temperature drops dramatically as the sun goes down. Luckily, there is a full bar offering a variety of beverages including hot cider and spiked hot chocolate if you decide not to drink the endless champagne.
I spent the last night of my stay at Black Bear Lodge, a beautiful property surrounded by mature trees and a picturesque setting. It is a bit further from the hustle and bustle, but there are still a variety of restaurants within walking distance.
My room at Black Bear Lodge came complete with a gas fireplace, comfortable sitting area, and essential oil diffuser, perfect for a relaxing evening. Guests can also gather at the quaint wine bar located just off the lobby or grab a glass of wine and mingle with other guests in the hot tub.
Getting to and from Lake Tahoe is quite simple. Most people fly into Reno-Tahoe airport and jump on the South Tahoe shuttle which takes a little over an hour. Once in town, the Lake Link is a free shuttle service which guests can use. All you need to do is download the app. Lake Link is a very convenient service and a great substitute for Uber if you are looking to save money but be sure to schedule your trip about 30-minutes in advance. I found that to be the average wait time.
The late fall season was the perfect time to visit. It was busy but not overly crowded and the weather was absolutely perfect. Cool mornings gave way to comfortable afternoons when you only needed a light sweater. The evenings were a bit chilly, but nothing too extreme.
Whether you seek adventure on the slopes, relaxation by the lake, or a taste of the local culture, Lake Tahoe has something for everyone. This captivating destination invites visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while enjoying the warmth and hospitality of a mountain town that truly has it all.

Much like a movie that's a Christmas movie even though it's not specifically a Christmas movie, our trip to the Midwest to celebrate a friend's graduation in the middle of December was a Christmas trip without specifically being a Christmas trip.
It was a graduation taking place amidst lights and trees and decorations and gift shopping and music and advent calendars and chocolates and peppermint and bible stories.
So no. Not specifically a Christmas trip. But certainly bathed in all the colors of the season.
It was also a trip wrapped in community. Formed of a large group of individuals committed to the well-being of each other as well as strangers who cross their paths. Which is probably why I have people who are struggling even more on the brain this week.
Since my last Holiday Report, we managed an unbroken string of evenings spent with Christmas movies and classic shows...
Santa Claus is coming to town The Year Without a Santa Claus The Family Man Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer The Best Christmas Pageant Ever Little Women (1994) Call the Midwife Christmas Episode (Season 4) How The Grinch Stole Christmas Call the Midwife Christmas Episode (Season 5, part 1) Call the Midwife Christmas Episode (Season 5, part 2) The Holiday The Santa Clause The Santa Clause 2 Ghosts, BBC Episode "The Ghost of Christmas" Ghosts, BBC Episode "The Ghost of Christmas"
In the meantime, I managed to finish all the Christmas cards and letters we’re sending out... and actually sent them out. Huzzah!
We’re also both done with our Christmas shopping (although I’ve got a thing or two still on the way). Me, I’m done with the Christmas shopping I’m doing for Kimmer. Kimmer, she’s done with the Christmas shopping she’s doing for me as well as everyone else.
So there’s that.
Now, we don’t count stockings as part of the Christmas shopping gig. Most of that’s because whatever you get for the stocking is super low maintenance. You just stuff it in the stocking once you have it. So that kind of shopping goes all the way through when the stores close on Christmas Eve.
As far as our plans?
Got my birthday going on tomorrow so we’re prefunctioning tonight a little with Avatar: The Way of Water at the Majestic Bay Theatres in Ballard followed up, hopefully if there’s still time because the movie’s more than three hours long... followed up by a stop at Pub70 on the waterfront.
Then tomorrow Linzy’ll join us and we’ll improvise a bit. Maybe a return visit to Paint The Town in U-Village. Maybe some miniature golf at Flatstick Pub in Pioneer Square. Maybe some photography at the nearest Fireworks Gallery. Maybe Trader Joe’s appetizers and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery streaming on Netflex.
Who knows? We’ll figure it out as we go.
After that, Christmas Eve Day, it looks like we’ve got a full day ending with St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle for a musical prelude and midnight mass.
For Christmas Day we’re still looking to follow our family tradition of a mid-day movie... although we’re still figuring out which movie it’ll be.
And all the details in-between we’ll fill in as we go. Hopefully, with enough peace and rest and sleep...
So we’re enjoying our experiences every step of the way.
Fingers crossed!
😊

Nylon Plastic Ball Pulling out an E7 from the bag
I have been using Bridgestone for quite some time now and the company has done pretty well with the E7 golf balls. E7 earns a 3-star rating this time. Flatter trajectory did not fare well with 13* Strong 3 Wood but was fairly fine with 15*. I tried the E7s in different situations and I am sharing my opinion with you here! With drivers, the ball has done pretty well. . Nylon Plastic Ball Pulling out an E7 from the bag, one can quickly gain some 20-yards when on a flatter trajectory. For the mid-cappers, the ball will help in lengthening the mid-irons. Since the ball has been designed for modified up as well as down trajectory, working with the ball may not be as easy as one thinks! As far as my fairway metals are concerned, they seem to like the Bridgestone E7 Golf Balls. A rating of 3 ½ is what the Bridgestone E7 Golf Ball deserves with fairway metals, hybrids and long irons. The cover will not offer the necessary backspin when you hit the ball to fly right into greens. The Bridgestone E7 Golf Ball will hold a very impressive line and thus earns a 4-star rating with flatsticks. With a tad-flat trajectory, the Surlyn cover of the ball prevents getting extra spin off of the hooded chips flying low from deep and rough greenside. Hit the ball with a flatstick putter and you can get a CLICK that is distinct and still you will never get the clingy feeling. The hybrids I have seem to be in absolute love with the flat trajectory. Other balls can pick up a trajectory that can be compared to one of the space shuttles shooting off from NASA. An incredible and lovely straight line is held by the Bridgestone E7 Golf Ball when you play with short irons/wedges. On several occasions I had hit the ball very high but the ball did well. The E7 is hyped as a trajectory flattening ball for those hitting the ball too high! There is no doubt that the ball has lived up to the hype it received. The feel of the ball is not really good and is just mediocre because of Surlyn cover. Try out the ball with mid-irons during winter golf and your wrists and elbows will appreciate the flight and you can save some massive expense of retooling! A 4-star rating is what I give to E7 with mid-irons. When it is about stinger shots with the long irons, they love the E7s but, I had to count on run and bump variety. Thus in this case, the E7 grabs a 4 star rating from me
