The wonderfully cumbersome subtitle for this LP does a pretty good job of explaining its content: “Popular music from Victorian musical shows and other favourites of the Gay ‘90s performed disc musical boxes and pianola rolls”. Yes, that’s right, musical boxes, from the collection of the late Roy Mickleburgh, transferred to acetate from the original Polyphon rolls, discs and cylinders. The music here are popular favourites of the Victorian music hall era: Robin Hood, Floradora, Belle of New York and of course God Save the Queen and that alternative national anthem, Daisy Bell. (The Kubrick connection popping up again). It also includes such lesser known numbers as The Anti-Cigarette Society (first performed in New York in 1897) and I’m A Naughty Girl and Rhoda And Her Pagoda both performed in 1898 at Daly’s Theatre London which has since been demolished by Warner Brothers (twice) and upon which now stands Leicester Square’s multiplex Vue West End Cinema. Mickleburgh had an extensive collection of these machines, which were generally installed in public spaces (restaurants, cinemas, hotels) rather than aimed for private homes and although some of them can now be found in Bristol Museum (where he lived) this LP is one of the best ways to listen to the range of music they produced. At one point you can hear a coin dropping into the slot, such is its authenticity. #victorianmusichall #musichall #polyphon #pianola #daisybell #saydiscrecords #gaynineties #findesiecle #vinyl #recordcollection #nowplaying #nowlistening @flashbacklondon #randomrecordreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CG5w28vJ3bU/?igshid=1oly6lxig0h2w

Britain 1976. A country suffering from droughts, IRA bombs, riots on the streets and in the prisons. Inflation reaches record heights. The Damned release the first single marketed as punk rock and The Sex Pistols make their infamous TV appearance on the Bill Grundy show. Amongst all this, Sailor release the camp music hall pop singles Glass of Champagne and Girls Girls Girls, appearing on Top Of The Pops wearing sailor hats and bell bottom trousers, and reach number 2 and 7 in the charts respectively. This anomaly – we tend to think of musical genres, like other cultural movements, in neatly packaged ‘decades’ – and the mid-late 70s was all about punk, supposedly. But it wasn’t, the same year the UK won the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time with the Brotherhood of Man’s trite and equally bell-bottomed Save Your Kisses For Me. Still, Sailor are sufficiently un-cool and little-known for me to have picked up this album only a few weeks ago, for free, from Islington’s landmark record shop, Flashback Records. The same one that I offloaded a vinyl copy of David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane in 1999 because I had bought a copy on CD and had to drastically downsize in advance of a 2-year round-the-world trip. What was I thinking?! I visit this shop whenever I’m in the area (sadly far less than I used to) as some sort of guilty homage to the scene of this crime. Trouble is Sailor’s second album, and features well-crafted songs that have a musical theatre quality about them, complete with nickelodeon and accordion, and remind me of Dan Gillespie Sells from The Feeling. Arguably, it’s not so much a throwback to music-hall pub pop, but leading the pack for the fops of the New Romantics to come. #sailor #girlsgirlsgirls #glassofchampagne @flashbacklondon #vinyl #cratedigging #newromantics #recordcollection #nowplaying #nowlistening #randomrecordreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CFw2mKjJynb/?igshid=1619dzwrgs9mx
