The Modest Arrangement
The Modest Arrangement was a social movement in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries characterised by more stringent enforcement of morality codes, especially with respect to familial powers.
The Arrangement saw a resurgence in the regions of Gaul and Spain in the early nineteenth century after something of an ebb during the Long Peace. This has been attributed to the rising popularity of the Deviance movement inspiring a backlash among its opposers; certainly Modest ideology depicts itself as less secure and more embattled in its later incarnations.
One of the most salient aspects of the Modest Arrangement from the modern perspective is its propensity to censorship, particularly of works deemed contrary to decency. Famously, author Antòin Herrel (latterly Tony Smith) was forced to flee Vascony to Kent after attempting to publish his blasphemous work 'Earthly Scene' (Vista Terrena).
The Second German War of the 1820s saw the grip of the Modest Arrangement weaken in many places, if only incidentally—as faith in existing power structures waned so too did people's trust in those powers' enforcement of the law. The days of Modest Vascony were numbers almost as soon as its interests in Mendeva and the East were threatened and the Vallabrì administration under King Hernand declared an alliance with the Convoy.
Although the Modest Arrangement would not survive the 1850 Laic Declarations in Belgrade in any official capacity, polities like Vascony, (New) Provence and Morrack would retain some hallmarks of the Arrangment well into the twentieth century.
Proponents
Ruvien Baume, Marquis de Caillat (fl. 1810), noted for his fervence in opposition to Deviance Theology
Diana Theodora Queiroz, considered to have laid the groundwork for the later Blue Marian movement

What I have seen strikes me as equal parts Brave New World and 1984, with a dash of Fahrenheit 451, and a light sprinkling of Lord of the Flies.
In the Sharjah, UAE airport, in line for a routine terrorist screening, a sea of faces is buried in the blue lights of their phones — nary do they look up but for the briefest of moments. Whatever it is on those screens has captured their full attention.
Related: Chinese Communist Party Literally Names Its Domestic Surveillance Program 'Skynet'
The automated passport scanner — there are no actual human airport employees within earshot, and even the ones who are remotely close, like the security professional who was supposed to be checking luggage on the x-ray machine for bombs but was instead watching a soccer game on a tablet, are barely there, mentally — orders me to place my document on the scanner.
I obey, it does its thing, then a gate opens and it orders me through. There, the swinging doors shut behind me and I find myself before another gate — trapped like cattle between the two. At this second gate, the disembodied female voice orders me to look up at the camera, which scans my face to ensure I’m not a terrorist, or some other sort of undesirable as determined by some bureaucrat that may or may not even be human at this point.
I pass the test — which, given what I do for a living and the things I say in public, I don’t take for granted — and the gate opens. The AI lady voice ushers me on my way.
Via RS Web Solutions (emphasis added):
“Dubai International Airport… employs an 80-camera system to scan visitors’ faces and irises, permitting pre-checked passengers to authenticate their identification in seconds without showing passports or other documentation.
Since then, the system has grown to include more than 120 smart gates located across the airport. Similar technology has been adopted at numerous airports in the United States and abroad, providing travelers with an alternative to the cumbersome security processes that have come to define contemporary international travel…
The system has improved and been built for additional characteristics, such as current attempts to algorithmically detect tourists who are infected with the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 yet have no symptoms…
Smart ID Engine is a complete AI-based solution for automatic ID scanning, document verification, and data internal consistency of over 1810 varieties of IDs from 210 issuers worldwide, which is put at electronic gates, and passport control delays may become a distant memory.”

It was about a month ago, when the aisles in stores that had been filled with displays of red merchandise for Valentine’s Day, quickly transformed for the next holiday –  to showcase items with hues of Emerald green.
Whether or not you are Irish, on March 17, people will be celebrating by wearing green, drinking Irish Whiskey or beer (perhaps even green beer), or eating Irish fare prepared with a brew from the iconic Guinness brewery. And, speaking of Guinness….I am not a beer drinker, however I, as many do, use Guinness as a “secret” ingredient when cooking and baking. Always on the lookout for single subject cookbooks, and ones that use a specific brand, I was pleased to find “The Official Guinness Cookbook: Over 70 Recipes for Cooking and Baking from Ireland’s Famous Brewery,” by Caroline Hennessy and photography by Evi Abeler (2021, Insight Editions, $29.99)
More about having your Guinness and eating it too after a bit of history of the iconic brand. From the book’s timeline, I’ve paraphrased some of the fascinating history here…
It was in 1759 when Arthur Guinness signed a nine thousand year lease (yes, 9000!) on a closed brewery at St. James Gate in Dublin. Twenty years later, he concentrates on brewing porter (in 1810 the company started to brew a stronger beer they called a “stouter kind of porter” that over time became known as stout). In 1803, Arthur passes away and his son, Arthur II takes over. Guinness is introduced to the United States in 1817, initially delivered to a port in South Carolina. In 1855, Arthur II dies and his son Benjamin takes the helm. In 1868 Benjamin passes and his son Edward takes over and doubled the size of the brewery. The brewery’s 200th anniversary is celebrated in 1959 and Guinness Draught is introduced as the world’s first nitro beer. In 2018, The Open Gate Brewery opened in Baltimore, combining their Irish brewing know-how and American beer creativity. Baltimore Blonde became the brewery’s flagship beer.
After some history, details are given about the four ingredients in Guinness beer: barley, hops, yeast and water. Just like pairing wine with food, it was interesting to learn how to best pair beer and food. The five principles are balance, cut, complement, contrast and seasonality. An example for the “cut” principle; “The bitterness of hops and roasted barley is a weapon in beer’s particular arsenal, cutting through rich dishes. The traditional Irish pub lunch of creamy seafood chowder worked well with Guinness Draught for that exact reason.”
As with wine, there is an art of tasting beer; what to look for, how to swirl and sniff, sip and aftertaste are explained. Proper serving temperatures for the various brews, glassware to use, and perfect pour techniques provide information to best enjoy your Guinness. Tasting notes of six brews are shared along with perfect food pairings for the brews.
Whether it be traditional beef and Guinness short ribs, Malted Guinness Draught no-churn ice cream, Baltimore Blonde lime fish tacos,  Foreign Extra stout baked beans, Guinness Draught onion soup with Irish cheddar toast,  Dublin Guinness Storehouse soda bread, or Traditional Irish Porter cake, or an espresso stout martini, the author writes, “Guinness is an integral part of Irish cuisine, with many a glass of stout bypassing the cook and instead ending up in a stew or fruitcake.” It was interesting to read about the author’s mention that in 1983, the prestigious Culinary Institute of America held a Guinness stout cooking competition that resulted in some creative dishes: Guinness cheese phyllo triangles, chicken Guinnessto, stout pumpernickel soup and the winner…a rich creamy shrimp stout.
The section on how to cook with Guinness taught me to use only full-fat dairy products if a recipe calls for dairy ingredients. The reason is that the acid in beer can curdle the low-fat type.
Don’t be afraid to add beer to your recipes. As the author said, “adding Guinness to your repertoire of ingredients brings a slew of new, complex flavors to the pot.”
Now, let’s get started with these recipes from the book.

Dublin Guinness Storehouse Soda Bread At the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Chef Sean Hunter loves the way that Guinness adds depths of flavor to their soda bread recipe. (Photo by Evi Abeler)
DUBLIN GUINNESS STOREHOUSE SODA BREAD
The headnote says, “At the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Chef Sean Hunter loves the way that Guinness adds depth of flavor to their soda bread recipe. Customers love it, too, especially the way Chef Hunter presents it: “We bake small loaves in empty bean tins. After cooking, they pop out perfectly cylindrical loaves, which we slice into perfect circles of bread.” Tried, tested, and true, this is a recipe that Chef Hunter has used for more than twenty years.”
5 ½ cups   whole wheat flour
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
⅔ cup old fashioned rolled oats, plus more for garnish
¼ cup caster or granulated sugar
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 sticks (12 ounces) butter, melted
1 pint buttermilk
1 cup Guinness Foreign Extra Stout
1 egg
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line two 5-by-9-inch loaf pans with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, oats, sugar, salt, and baking soda, mixing well.
In a separate large bowl, combine the butter, buttermilk, stout, and egg, mixing well. Slowly add the flour mixture to the buttermilk mixture, stirring to combine to form a dough.
Divide the dough evenly between the two prepared pans. Tap the pans on the counter to remove any air bubbles. Sprinkle additional oats over the top of each. Bake for 15 minutes. Drop the temperature down to 350 degrees and bake for 45 minutes more, turning once halfway through so one side doesn’t burn, until the top of the loaves are a rich, dark brown and the sides are lighter brown. Remove the bread carefully from the pans and allow to cool on a wire rack. Makes two 5-by-9-inch loaves.

Guinness Draught Onion Soup with Irish Cheddar Toast Sweet, silky caramelized onions and dark malty Guinness goodness are a soup combination made in heaven. (Photo by Evi Abeler)
GUINNESS DRAUGHT ONION SOUP WITH IRISH CHEDDAR TOAST
The headnote says, “Sweet, silky caramelized onions and dark malty Guinness goodness are a soup combination made in heaven. Top with melted cheese on bread for full-on comfort. This is a great dish to make in advance, as the flavors improve overnight.”
Melt the butter in a large heavy-bottom saucepan over medium low heat. Add the onions, season well with salt and black pepper, and cook, stirring often, for about 1 hour, until the onions are soft, sticky, and deep brown. Stir in the flour and thyme, and cook, stirring, for 3 to 4 minutes.
Whisk in the beer and stock, increase the heat to medium-high, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for about 1 hour. Add the whiskey (if using) and season with salt and black pepper as desired.
Heat the broiler to high. Spread the baguette slices with the mustard. Ladle the soup into four ovenproof dishes, top each with a slice of baguette, and sprinkle with the cheese. Broil for 4 to 5 minutes, until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted and bubbling. Serve immediately. : Makes 4 servings.
3 tablespoons butter
4 onions (about 24 ounces, thinly sliced
Sea salt
Black pepper
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1 cup Guinness Draught Stout
34 fluid ounces beef stock
Dash Roe & Co. Blended Irish Whiskey (optional)
4 thick baguette slices
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or Chile Extra Stout Mustard (page 62 in book)
1 cup grated Irish cheddar cheese

Traditional Irish Porter Cake Visit any grandmother’s house in Ireland and you’ll find a porter cake, made with Guinness.(Photo by Evi Abeler)
Traditional Irish Porter Cake
The headnote says, “Visit any grandmother’s house in Ireland, and you will find a porter cake, made with Guinness, in a tin somewhere in the kitchen. This version of the classic recipe includes a drizzle of Roe and Co. Irish whiskey over the cake when it comes out of the oven, adding an extra note of warm spice and fruit.”
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons Guinness Draught Stout
1 cup packed light brown sugar
2 sticks (8 ounces unsalted butter, plus more for greasing pan
1 ¾ pounds mixed dried fruit, such as raisins, sultanas (golden raisins), and chopped prunes
4¾ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
1 ½ teaspoons mixed spice or
pumpkin pie spice
½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
3 eggs, beaten
3 tablespoons Roe & Co. Blended Irish Whiskey (optional)
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Grease a 9-inch round springform pan with butter and line it with parchment paper.
In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the beer, sugar, and butter. Stirring frequently, heat until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved. Add the dried fruit and bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, until the fruit is plump and soft. Remove the pan from the heat and transfer the fruit mixture to a large bowl to cool quickly.
In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, mixed spice, and nutmeg. Stir the eggs into the cooled fruit mixture, then add the flour mixture, mixing well to combine.
Scrape the batter into the prepared springform pan and bake for 1½ to 1¾ hours, or until the cake is well risen, dark golden brown, and a cake tester comes out clean from the center. Remove the pan from the oven and drizzle the whiskey (If using) on top while the cake is hot.
Cool the cake on a wire rack before removing it from the pan. Wrap it in parchment paper and store in an airtight container. Keep the cake for two to three days—if you can resist!—before serving it. Makes one 9-inch cake.

George Washington traveled with 18 wagons of personal supplies, including china. and his tent had servant's quarters.
That was an area for an enslaved man named William Lee acting as his valet, not a paid servant. I think that's an important detail to include.
Tumblr media
Regarding the rest of the excellent post, Lin-Manuel Miranda did the same thing in Hamilton. I remember when it came out being very surprised George III was played as a stereotypical gay queen when he was straight. Not even "officially straight" but historians think he actually preferred men. He was a straight man who adored his wife and never cheated on her, which was basically unheard of at the time for a monarch.
all the ladies love that I have so many thoughts on the vilification of male effeminacy in popular thought about the American Revolution
it's soooo sexy that those thoughts are half-formed because my research specialty is actually 19th-century social history (with focuses on women's, queer, and dress history)
I'm actually very hot for doing all of this, in fact

I can’t believe that this home was built in 1810- it’s one of the oldest I’ve posted and it looks no later than the 50s. It must’ve been completely redone, especially the interior, b/c it’s over-the-top. It’s in Brownsville, Pennsylvania and all they want is $350K.
Tumblr media
Has a nice porch. Wonder if those are fountains that are plugged in. At least paint the black cords.
Tumblr media
The first thing that jumps out is brown sky paper and an “Exit” sign.
Tumblr media
Wait, I changed my mind, it’s a gold sky. Unusual placement for a piano- it seems in the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black velvet sofas with gold fringe. I hate those 2 chairs, though.
Tumblr media
A stone fireplace. Nice gothic door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this is a diner type kitchen nook that knocks your socks off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s up with the white kitchen.
Tumblr media
After seeing that kitchen nook, I don’t even want to eat in this ice blue dining room.

Here we are on the 2nd fl. landing.
Tumblr media
All this elegance for $350K, but there are 5 bdms and only this 1 bath.

I’m sure nothing conveys, but at least they always leave the custom made draperies.

Even the library is fancy shmancy.

The term dandy meant vastly different things from its inception in the late 1790s to its heyday in 1819. It was largely superseded by the term beau 1810-1815, and then resurrected by post-period writers to each of whom, as we have seen, it signified something different. It is significant that Beau Brummell was called ‘Beau’, as was Wellington, ‘The Beau’ by his contemporaries, or occasionally, ‘The Peer’. Wellington was often portrayed as dressing simply, in white pantaloons, hessians, blue frock and white neck-cloth and cocked hat. [...]
The dress he wore for the battlefield and for campaigning would have been entirely in place on Bond Street among the beaux of the ton, admittedly with the addition of some military trappings, such as the sash and sword. He was an early adopter of fashion, if not an innovator. It is certain that he set the pattern for the young officers of the army, who wanted to cut a dash by imitating their leader. They talked of ‘the true Wellington pattern cocked hat’, the ‘Wellington boot’, the ‘Wellington pelisse’, and so on.
