(WAY PAST) Traintober 2023: Twins prt 2 + Bird
Tumblr media
The VR's Scottish Twins R707 City of Melbourne "Cerberus" and R761 "Andri", with friend.
(Usual disclaimer, this is not a reflection on any person living or dead or the real life locomotives they are based on)
OK, its now November but so... I'm putting these up anyway. The VR's answer to Donald and Douglas, Victorian Railways R-Class Hudson R707 City of Melbourne/Cerberus and VR R-Class Hudson 761 Andri.
Both built at North British Works at Queens Park, Glasgow and brought to Victoria in the early 50's as part of a 70 strong fleet of R-Class Hudsons to replace the aging A2 4-6-0 express passenger fleet. The Rs were quickly superseded by the B-class diesels built at Clyde, Granville, NSW; and all of the class was withdrawn by 1964, with only R707 and R761 remaining in operational condition after their fellow Rs were brutalised by the VR.
Seven members of the class including these two made it into preservation. As these two were paired up frequently during the late and post-steam era on special trains, it was natural that they were close. And they cannot be any more different.
R707/Cerberus (originally "Choin Dubh", but renamed himself to something the Aussie humans could understand) is quite an intense individual, highly intelligent and obsessed with balancing the scales as well as preserving the rest of his family. He's mad as a cut snake that he was not particularly dealt a good hand initially (rust in the bearings kept him in the shop till 1954, STUG equipment fitted to him reinforced his idea of himself as hard done by) or was given the working life he was promised; he was fucked around by the VR in the final years of steam, moved from shed to shed and then left to rot for 6 years from 1974 to 1980; he hasn't forgiven them, even after they are long gone.
He's by turns manipulative, charming, calculating and scary. When he is not pulling his highly lucrative Grainlander and Riverlander trains, he's working out schemes with his underlings, his right hand engine being the Lancastrian English Electric built F-class shunting diesel, Dynon Donk.
R761/Andri (originally "Kelpie" but taunting by the local yobbo locomotives hurt her enough to change it; a particularly humiliating incident of taunting lead to one of them having a rude word scratched on their tender in meter high letters...) couldn't care less about balancing the scales. As a matter of fact, she doesn't care at all. All she want to do is continue to run like the Devil in engine form if she's allowed by the vollies at SteamRail, look at birds (her special interest is birds of all kinds) and sigh over Gordon the Big Engine, her favorite engine in the RWS series. Her particular special train is the Melbourne Snow train but she's taken plenty of other special trains. She's is pretty blunt and forthright when talking with others, but she means no offense.
Her working life was punctuated by long bouts being shedded, for reasons that are not entirely clear or explainable; which would explain why she was in such good condition compared to the other Rs at the time of her preservation.
Both these engines have a monster form, and a demon form like their Newport compadre, VR H220 Heavy Harry.
As a matter of fact, when they both attained a human form sometime around 1964, they ran in the same larrikin gangs as Harry did. And participated in his infamous scrapbreaking activities. To this day, they still live at Newport, at the old sheds in the West Block where the volunteer groups operate their trains out of.
The lil blue bird on Andri's shoulder is a Splendid Blue Wren.
Here's a video of the IRL R761 ripping up the track:
youtube
The VR were never that interested in breaking records for speed, but it is estimated the Rs could go as fast as 90/mph if allowed; VR regulations dictated that express passenger engines like the R, the S and the A2 were restricted to 70/mph and H220 60/mph.

Tammy visits a self-taught gardener in her extraordinary garden packed with produce inspired by Lebanese culture and cuisine.
During the strict western Sydney lockdowns, Sahar El-Chiekh transformed what was a dusty backyard into an extraordinarily productive cultural food bowl. By gathering advice from the online garden community and her creative approach to gardening in a rental property, Sahar's backyard has become a sensation. "I came out here to hide in the garden," says Sahar, but it prompted a pursuit to create a place of solace and empowerment. "If mummy can't be found (in the house), she's out in the back."
Sahar is passionate about cooking food from the garden and admits, "I'm not actually a great cook, but it's different when the produce is from your garden. I don't like to see anything go to waste." Much of her produce connects back to her Lebanese roots, with plants such as Egyptian spinach, eggplant, beans and chickpeas. Sahar says, these are "the flavour of my childhood." Egyptian spinach, traditionally known as Molokhia, has a gelatinous texture and is best suited in soups. Sahar says, "I find it easier to grow than English spinach" however seeds for this traditional variety were not easy to find when her parents moved here as teenagers. "Now you're seeing a lot more of them in middle eastern grocers, but in the past my parents had to go to a farm that grew them, just to be able to enjoy them in their home."
With an organic approach to her gardening, Sahar's advice is to harness companion planting. To control pests, Sahar grows marigolds to deter thrips, hibiscus to attract flea beetles away from her eggplants, and chickpeas to deter caterpillars from her tomatoes. To avoid powdery mildew, Sahar trains her zucchini vertically and removes all leaves growing below the developing fruit to improve airflow. "This is the first year I've done it and it's made a huge difference," says Sahar, who has also adopted an ingenious t-shirt support for heavier fruits that will be harvested for seeds. "I need to support the ladies" says Sahar.
Growing a garden in a rental property has its challenges, so to create a transportable garden, Sahar's uses large growbags for her various fruit trees. Her prized possession is a pomelo tree, which Sahar says is "in between a grapefruit and an orange." Her obsession with pomelo started twenty-two years ago. "I went overseas to Lebanon for a holiday… my auntie has a big citrus orchard in her backyard, and I used to sit under the trees and freshly pick and eat them. Then I came back to Australia I couldn't find them; it took me 20 years to hunt down this pomelo. Last year was the first year I tasted it… It's not bitter like a grapefruit, but not wet like an orange, it's perfect."
There are some standout structures in the garden, such as a rustic ladder and a walkthrough archway. "I always loved the idea of being able to walk through an archway," says Sahar, "I wanted to grow vertically this year so I could fit more in." Growing on the arches are tromboncino, Lebanese cucumbers, various tomatoes, snake beans, Richmond green cucumbers, and Cucu-melon. And they're not only lovely on the vine.
Sahar invites Tammy to taste some of her homegrown heritage saying, "we have gardened and now we're going to graze," with traditional dishes such as hummus, Fattoush salad, cooked beans and mloukheya a banadoura, a dish made with Egyptian spinach and tomato. "I think gardening and being able to cook from my garden, gives me a sense of empowerment," says Sahar, "Especially to be able to feed my kids and my family from something that I've grown, it brings us together. As we know, food is all about community, family, laughing and building memories. I think gardening and cooking go hand in hand."

Sydney Trains M set
Class of electric train operating in Sydney, Australia
The Sydney Trains M sets, also referred to as the Millennium trains, are a class of electric multiple units that operate on the Sydney Trains network. Built by EDi Rail between 2002 and 2005, the first sets initially entered service under the CityRail brand on 1 July 2002 after short delays due to electrical defects. The M sets were built as "fourth generation" trains for Sydney's suburban rail fleet, replacing the 1960s Tulloch carriages and providing extra capacity on the suburban rail network. The sets currently operate on the T2 Inner West & Leppington, T3 Bankstown, T5 Cumberland, T7 Olympic Park and T8 Airport & South lines.

Vestibule
The Millennium train, like the entire Sydney Trains fleet and electric NSW TrainLink fleet, is a double decker. It is a four car consist, with the middle two cars being non-control motor cars and the two outer cars being driving control trailer cars fitted with the pantograph. The Millennium train was the first to be equipped with an AC drive system unlike the Tangara, which has a DC drive system. The sets usually operate in eight-car formations with two four-car sets combined. While the Millennium train concept is an evolution of the Tangara concept (manufactured by A Goninan & Co), the Millennium train introduced new features such as internal electronic destination indicators, automated digital voice announcements for upcoming stops, a return to reversible seating, surveillance cameras, wider stairways, a new safety yellow colour scheme, and push-button opened internal doors. The Millennium Train also introduced crumple zones to absorb impact in a collision. Interiors were designed by Transport Design International.
The train also features emergency help points, allowing passengers to contact the train crew in an emergency. The help points are located on the sides of the stairwell to the upper deck. There are actually two help points in the same location, with a large one at face height with a microphone and speaker, and a lower one with a microphone only. There are also emergency door releases which were retrofitted to the trains. These allow passengers to manually open the doors in an emergency, as recommended in the report for the Waterfall rail accident. The retrofit program was stated as having been completed in November 2014.
Like with the T, A and B sets, the M sets feature Scharfenberg couplers.
M sets are 3.03 metres (9 ft 11+1⁄4 in) wide, being classed by Transport for NSW as medium width trains, which allows them to operate within the whole Sydney Trains suburban network.
Unlike sets M2–M35, set M1 has a slightly different interior design with differently coloured doors and different seat handles for unknown reasons.
Delivery
Stairwell
The cars were constructed by EDi Rail at Cardiff Workshops. The contract included a 15-year maintenance agreement with EDi Rail to maintain the trains at a specialised maintenance centre at Eveleigh. During testing and initial revenue service, they ran as four car sets, with eight car sets commencing service towards the end of 2002 after further testing. All 35 four car sets were delivered by October 2005.
The initial order signed in October 1998 was for 81 carriages, in December 2002 an option was taken up for an additional 60. In February 2017, Sydney Trains exercised an option to extend Downer's maintenance of the trains for a further 10 years.
Criticisms
The Millennium trains were criticised for having several technical problems and causing problems with Sydney Trains, they were referred to in the media reports as The "Mi-lemon" and "Millenni-Bug" as a result. Some of the problems were caused by insufficient power supply on the overhead to cope with the power demands of the more technologically advanced trains causing them to shut down. Software bugs also contributed to the trains' poor reliability.
The Millennium trains were withdrawn from service in April 2003 while the problems were being rectified and a full audit was carried out. They were subsequently reintroduced into service in June 2003 and have since been operating on the T2 Inner West & Leppington, T3 Bankstown, T6 Carlingford, T7 Olympic Park and T8 Airport & South lines. After the new timetable was released on 26 November 2017, M sets began as 4-car services on the T5 Cumberland line on both weekdays & weekends, along with a few 8-car Waratahs.
In service
External Carriage Camera Trial
Trial cameras
In late 2008, two Millennium trains were fitted with external cameras atop of carriages near the doors, testing their use for the then-future Waratah trains. These cameras were subsequently incorporated into the final design of the Waratah train.
Lines serviced
The Millennium trains typically operate on the following lines (normally described as Sector 2):
T2 Inner West & Leppington Line: Leppington or Parramatta to City Circle via Granville
T3 Bankstown Line: Liverpool or Lidcombe to City Circle via Bankstown
T5 Cumberland Line: Leppington to Richmond
T7 Olympic Park Line: Shuttle from Lidcombe to Olympic Park on weekdays
T8 Airport & South Line: Macarthur to City Circle via Airport or Sydenham
Maintenance Depots
The trains were originally maintained at Eveleigh Maintenance Centre.
As with all other trains, these trains are not exclusively kept in Auburn overnight. They only need to return to the depot for maintenance, and at other times, they may be stabled at various yards on the lines that they operate, such as Liverpool and Leppington yards -Anastasia the train girl
I won’t be able to post as much cause mental issues plus I just came out to a friend as trans so I have to deal with that to

Mission Briefing
Happy New Year! 2024 is shaping up to be a significant year on many fronts, and 2023 certainly ended with a bang of sorts. Early in the morning hours of December 31st, the waters around the Arabian Peninsula were suddenly disrupted by a distress call. It's the containership Maersk Hangzhou, under siege for the second time in less than 24 hours. This time, the attackers are four small boats, manned by Iranian-backed Houthi forces, emerging from Yemeni territories under Houthi control.
The Maersk Hangzhou's crew, facing a dire situation, watched as these boats, armed with crew-served and small arms weapons, advanced and fired on the ship. These boats would get dangerously close, just 20 meters away, and even attempted to board the ship. In response, the ship's security team fights back, but the situation escalated rapidly.
Enter the heroes of our story: US Navy H60 Seahawk helicopters. These powerful machines, part of the USS Eisenhower and Gravely's compliment, fly to the rescue. They issue verbal warnings, but the small boats, undeterred, fire upon the helicopters. The Navy pilots and crew, trained for such moments, return fire in self-defense. Their precision and skill are undeniable as they sink three of the four boats and drive the fourth away. Remarkably, the US personnel and equipment remain unscathed.
Tumblr media
An MH-60S Seahawk helicopter of HSC-7 landing (US Navy)
The exact H60 squadrons involved remain unconfirmed by US Central Command. However, among them were likely several helicopters from HSC 7, aka the "Dusty Dogs" of Carrier Airwing 3 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. These pilots, flying the Sierra model of the Seahawk, probably relied on the formidable .50 caliber machine gun mounted on the aircraft's starboard side.
While I normally do videos and newsletter articles about fighter planes, we need to take a moment to appreciate the Navy’s MH-60 Seahawk, which is an incredibly versatile machine and somewhat underrated. The Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk is a marvel of modern aviation technology. It's a twin-engine helicopter equipped with turboshaft engines, skillfully designed for multiple missions by the United States Navy. This impressive bird is derived from the U.S. Army's UH-60 Black Hawk and is part of the renowned Sikorsky S-70 family. What sets the Seahawk apart are its unique design tweaks – the main rotor blades can fold, and it has a hinged tail, making it a perfect fit for the confined spaces on ships.
In the vast blue expanses where the U.S. Navy sails, the H-60 airframe takes on various roles, embodied in the models SH-60B, SH-60F, HH-60H, MH-60R, and MH-60S. This helicopter is incredibly versatile, able to operate from virtually any air-capable naval vessel – be it a frigate, destroyer, cruiser, fast combat support ship, expeditionary transfer dock, amphibious assault ship, littoral combat ship, or even an aircraft carrier.
The Seahawk's mission profile is impressively diverse. It's a master of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASUW), making it a formidable foe against underwater and surface threats. For more covert operations, it excels in naval special warfare (NSW) insertion. In times of crisis, the Seahawk is a guardian angel, performing search and rescue (SAR) and combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions. It's also a lifeline for logistical support through vertical replenishment (VERTREP) and plays a crucial role in medical evacuations (MEDEVAC). All in all, the Sikorsky SH-60/MH-60 Seahawk is a multi-mission powerhouse, essential to the U.S. Navy's operations across the globe.
Looking ahead to 2024, given the ongoing events unfolding around the world, you can expect more mini documentaries not just on fixed wing aircraft, but helicopters like the Seahawk and other support aircraft.
This week in aviation history
1 January 1965: The Cold War is at its peak, and the United States Air Force is in dire need of a reconnaissance aircraft that can outrun and outmaneuver any threat. Enter the SR-71A, a marvel of engineering, capable of flying at speeds over Mach 3 and at altitudes above 85,000 feet.
On New Year’s Day in 1965, a significant day at Beale Air Force Base in California. On this day, the 4200th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing was activated, specifically to operate this groundbreaking aircraft. The SR-71A wasn't just a plane; it was a statement of technological prowess, capable of gathering crucial intelligence while remaining virtually untouchable by enemy defenses.
Tumblr media
An SR-71 in flight. Note the water vapor plumes (USAF)
The wing's mission was clear: strategic reconnaissance, a vital component in the high-stakes game of the Cold War. The SR-71A's capabilities were unprecedented. It could cover vast distances incredibly fast, capturing detailed photographs of enemy territories without being detected or intercepted. This wing, with its Blackbirds, was a key player in the strategic balance between the superpowers.
Fast forward to January 25, 1966, the wing underwent a significant change, being redesignated as the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. This wasn't just a change of name; it signified an evolving and enduring role in strategic reconnaissance. The 9th Wing continued to operate the SR-71A, playing a crucial role in gathering intelligence during many Cold War flashpoints and beyond.
The SR-71A's service under these wings is a tale of technological achievement and strategic importance. It set numerous flight speed and altitude records, some of which remain unbroken. The aircraft itself became an icon, symbolizing speed, stealth, and the cutting-edge of aerial reconnaissance technology. Nearly 60 years later, the Blackbird still looks futuristic.

Top 6 Reasons Why You Need an Expert Fitness Gym in Sydney
Introduction: nowadays, everyone is keen on looking and feeling good. And the trend and craze with fitness and gym training sessions have caught on big time. It is almost something people cannot leave without, given its benefits. But it can also be confusing (especially for freshers to gyming) not knowing the best exercises to take up. That’s why it is increasingly important to know what value you get from your overall fitness regime. It is not unusual for people to take up a personal boxing trainer or even boxing beginner classes for high-fitness mavericks. All are in good faith and intention to get fit. But, in true fitness, why is it good to know what fitness regime best suits you? And why is a gym personal trainer vital in all your fitness plans? Let’s uncover and learn more below with the best fitness gym in Sydney.
Best Reasons to Go for an Experienced Functional Training Gym
(a). Develop strength the right way and stay 100% fit methodically
You may try as many exercises as you want without a trainer. Or try your hand at different equipment, hoping to develop muscles & get fit instantly. But as the Chinese riddle, a journey of thousand miles begins with the first step. You can reach your fitness destination with expert guidance and training.
Tumblr media
(b). Use the best MMA training to get better physically & emotionally
It is said mixed martial arts training helps you develop several skills. They include fast reflexes and reactions, higher self-defense, better strength, and more endurance.
(c). Learn the bests nutrition for a healthier body and muscles
It may seem okay for most people to eat anything that comes their way. However, if you are trying to build a healthier body and muscles and maintain it, then proper nutrition matters. A professional bodybuilding gym with better trainers can be your best bet to achieve that fast.
(d). 24/7/365 gym, every day is an opportunity to improve your fitness
For some gyms, there are hours of recess and closure. With the functional training gym, you can have a chance to get better every minute. Fitness and overall health are mixed and fused at the hardcore gym.
(e). Whatever your membership choice, you are trained by experts
There is a feeling of belonging when you go to gyms with a strong fitness attitude. From the base, pro, and elite memberships, there is access to better facilities and experts.
(f). Avoid serious injuries in training due to ignorant exercise routines
A gym may be a place to enhance your fitness goals and strength. But it can also become a place you develop basic to serious injuries due to a lack of knowledge. When gym facilities and exercise routines are poorly used, they may result in common health challenges and symptoms. A professional trainer ensures your safety and fitness go hand in hand till you achieve your fitness goals.
Summary: sportsmen and sportswomen recognize that without fitness, it’s impossible to bring in great performances. Fitness can be the difference between you and a gold medal or maximum points in a championship. The bodybuilding gym in Melbourne is an antidote to these and more. It can help keep you far from the doctor’s chambers as you enjoy the best health. With the 24-hour gym, fitness and self-perfection in strength and weight training take you to the periphery of greatness and better health.

Website: https://www.raiseyourvoice.net.au/
Address: Peakhurst, NSW, Australia
Raise Your Voice by Lea Baker offers expert vocal coaching, helping students discover their free, authentic, well produced voice.
- What I Do:
I help people find their freely produced, efficient and authentic voice. I love to teach and empower students. Each singer is different, there is no 'one size fits all'. My sessions involve lots of physical and vocal explorations, positive reinforcement and lots of encouragement.
Using actors' voice training techniques, I help singers find freedom through embodying their voice and releasing unhelpful tension.
I believe ‘trying harder’ nearly always leads to vocal difficulties. When vocalists discover the power and range of natural, organic and instinctive sounds, they grow in confidence and ease - often discovering the voice they didn’t know they had!
I help those who rely on their speaking voice for their profession, such as teachers, public speakers and call centre workers (to name a few!), avoid vocal fatigue, become more engaging to their listeners and maintain a healthy voice.
- What I Offer:
Success in learning depends on finding the right Instructor; someone who knows the subject well and understands how you learn. My teaching style is practical, holistic, non-gimmicky, and based on science. Students learn how to sing or speak optimally. Clear specific language and examples are used, leading students on a self-discovery journey.  Everyone has a voice. My job is to help you release its full potential.
Here are the four philosophies I follow:
* Trying harder will almost always lead to a deterioration in vocal improvement. It’s finding the ease in vocal use that is the key. Less is often more.
* The most freely produced and authentic singing or speaking comes from your natural, organic and instinctive voice. Often it's noticing and releasing unhelpful vocal habits & muscle tension to find that voice.
* I believe learning is about self-exploration and discovery, with guidance from your voice coach. Doing what the teacher asks to gain their approval isn’t learning.
* Training at NIDA opened up a whole new world. Using acting voice training helps singers to feel and sense their voice, rather than just hear it.
Why choose me?
* I help the student discover for themselves with guidance and targeted techniques.
* I take the time to understand the mindset of the student towards their voice and address this in my coaching.
* I teach holistically – I teach the whole person, not just their voice.
* Students get clear explanations of the ‘why’ when to comes to voice usage.
* My Teaching is underpinned by a good understanding of the science and physiology of the voice.
* Finding the unhelpful habits or traits of the student and helping them rewire these.
* Experiential learning is key, helping students to discover for themselves, no “pleasing the teacher”.
* Learning is layered. What each particular student needs at this particular time. I don’t clutter them up with lots of ‘nice to know’ stuff - it's not about how much I know, it's about what the student needs to be a better singer, speaker or performer.
* Voice lessons are either online or in person (Covid safe).

Dr Robert Harris joins the team at Paddington Doctors
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/dr-robert-harris-joins-the-team-at-paddington-doctors/
Dr Robert Harris joins the team at Paddington Doctors
Tumblr media
Gay GP Dr Robert Harris (he/him) is ready to serve the LGBTQI+ community in his new role at Paddington Doctors.
Caring for people is in Dr Robert Harris’s blood. Growing up in the UK, he looked up to his father, who worked as a paramedic.
“I always saw him as a real-life superhero,” Robert tells QNews.
Explaining how he came to be a doctor, he says: “I did well at school, I had an interest in the sciences and I wanted to help people like my dad. A career in medicine seemed like the perfect combination of solving complex problems and using those skills to make a difference in people’s lives.”
Robert, who trained in London and qualified as a doctor in 2007, moved to Sydney after completing his specialist GP training in 2013. He fell in love with Sydney after a vacation during Mardi Gras and made plans to relocate here soon afterwards.
After completing his required ten years’ rural and regional service as a GP in Australia, Robert has now joined the team full-time at Paddington Doctors, a comprehensive medical practice in Sydney’s inner east.
“Paddington Doctors’ principal GP approached me and I was very impressed. It’s a very modern practice, all brand new, having just opened in 2022,” he enthuses.
The nurse, reception team and pathologist are all lovely. The doctors work together really well and we have a fantastic psychologist and dietician. It’s a very inclusive and welcoming place for me to work as a gay man, and for LGBTQI+ patients.
Caring for our community
LGBTQI+ health and wellbeing is a special focus for Robert. He holds a Diploma in Family Planning and Sexual Health (DFSRH). As a doctor who keeps abreast of medical developments, he’s aware of the latest health interventions available to our community, which are constantly changing. In addition to vaccine-preventable diseases, we now have access to medications that can reduce the risk of contracting HIV and STIs such as chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhoea.
Robert recently completed special training with ASHM (the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine) and received accreditation from NSW Health to become an S100 prescriber for managing patients living with HIV.
“I can now manage and prescribe for people living with HIV in the community with support from ASHM mentors if there are any complexities or medication side effects,” he says.
While Robert is passionate about LGBTQI+ health, he prides himself on being an empathetic and dedicated all-round GP who can provide long-term continuity of care to all members of the community including rainbow families.
His clinical experience includes mental health, paediatrics, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, gastroenterology (including IBS management), asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and elderly care.
In his spare time, Robert enjoys keeping fit through the gym, running around Centennial Park and the occasional ski trip.
He has volunteered on the Mardi Gras medical team for Sydney World Pride.
-Dr Robert Harris is a GP at Paddington Doctors, 266 Oxford Street, Paddington NSW. He is available Tuesday to Saturday. For information and appointments visit www.drrobertharris.com.au
