Raise Your Voice by Lea Baker offers expert vocal coaching, helping students discover their free, authentic, well produced voice.

- What I Do:

I help people find their freely produced, efficient and authentic voice. I love to teach and empower students. Each singer is different, there is no 'one size fits all'. My sessions involve lots of physical and vocal explorations, positive reinforcement and lots of encouragement.

Using actors' voice training techniques, I help singers find freedom through embodying their voice and releasing unhelpful tension.

I believe ‘trying harder’ nearly always leads to vocal difficulties. When vocalists discover the power and range of natural, organic and instinctive sounds, they grow in confidence and ease - often discovering the voice they didn’t know they had!

I help those who rely on their speaking voice for their profession, such as teachers, public speakers and call centre workers (to name a few!), avoid vocal fatigue, become more engaging to their listeners and maintain a healthy voice.

- What I Offer:

Success in learning depends on finding the right Instructor; someone who knows the subject well and understands how you learn. My teaching style is practical, holistic, non-gimmicky, and based on science. Students learn how to sing or speak optimally. Clear specific language and examples are used, leading students on a self-discovery journey.  Everyone has a voice. My job is to help you release its full potential.

Here are the four philosophies I follow:

* Trying harder will almost always lead to a deterioration in vocal improvement. It’s finding the ease in vocal use that is the key. Less is often more.

* The most freely produced and authentic singing or speaking comes from your natural, organic and instinctive voice. Often it's noticing and releasing unhelpful vocal habits & muscle tension to find that voice.

* I believe learning is about self-exploration and discovery, with guidance from your voice coach. Doing what the teacher asks to gain their approval isn’t learning.

* Training at NIDA opened up a whole new world. Using acting voice training helps singers to feel and sense their voice, rather than just hear it.

where you meet shota on an online video game, falling in love with him even if you've never seen him. and now you're afraid that meeting the guy behind the avatar in real life might shatter your opinion of him.

since you were young, you've always been a big fan of video games, but you were never vocal about it. none of your friends shared that hobby, therefore feeling forced to live your passion alone.

so, when playing an online game you met shota, a video game fan like you, you were so happy that you almost started dancing in your room. yes, you never saw him in real life, but he quickly became the most present person in your life.

you texted him everyday, playing games together during video calls and sharing every bit of each other’s life, even the most useless things, like the yogurt you ate for breakfast or the new jeans he had bought.

soon enough, you realized you fell in love with him.

it wasn’t surprising, seeing how easy it was for you to be yourself around him. but still it seemed wrong to you, because starting a relationship with someone you had never actually seen seemed strange, dangerous even. so you kept your feelings a secret for months, keeping the relationship you had with him still.

that’s, until you got a text from him.

an hour later he called you to get the address of your house, and after about twenty minutes he was already outside your door, ringing the doorbell continuously.

you rushed at the front door, after spending the last hour and a half tidying up your house and yourself.

before you open the door you realize how stupid it might be to let someone into your home who could very well be a different person than what they appear to be online. but then you think back to the months - almost a year - spent together between games and calls, and you reassure yourself. and you're also reassured by the fact that he's probably the dumbest of the two, since he's the one who went all this way for an online friend.

“shota.” you say, when his figure finally appears in your field of vision.

he just smiles. then he leaves his suitcase to hug you. and it's the best hug you've ever received in your life.

“i should scold you for showing up here without warning.” you murmur with your face buried in his shoulder, hoping he can't sense your heart beating faster and faster.

you hear him laughing next to your ear: “i warned you an hour before.”

you huff, knowing that in that moment you're anything but angry at him.

he detaches himself from your body, taking his suitcase and then finally entering your house. “shall we play together?”

you're both sitting on your bed, a half empty bag of chips in the middle, two joysticks and an action game on the screen.

you've been like this for a while now, elbows touching and the comfortable silence of those who have known each other well for a while.

you're doing your best to stay focused on the game, ignoring as much as possible the closeness you currently have with the boy.

the crush hadn't passed, and the excuses about it being nothing more than a virtual relationship were now no longer valid.

he was there. on your bed. eating your chips.

you could hear live all the strange noises he usually made when playing, sounding like a character himself. you could feel the bed move when he moved. and now, damn, now you could feel his head resting on your shoulder, his hair brushing your cheek, his arm completely attached to yours.

you were dying internally. and you were very close to doing it externally too, as it seemed like you were about to have a heart attack.

“sorry for rushing in here without saying a word." he said, as he blew the head off a zombie with a gunshot.

“no problem. i'm happy to have you here.” you answer. and it was true, by now you had even forgotten about the fact that until that morning you hadn't even suspected his visit.

“it's that... there's something i wanted to tell you, and i don't like communicating important things by text.”

“something happened?” you ask. you hands trembling as you pretended to still look at the screen.

“i think i'm in love with you.” he says in one breath, without removing his head from your shoulder, and without daring to remove his eyes from the game.

you are speechless. your cheeks become red as you watch the words "game over" appear in front of you.

“i know it's weird, and i don't expect you to reciprocate,” he adds, seeing that you hesitate to answer, "but i felt i had to tell you. if you don't feel the same we can always pretend that nothing happened. i'll go home and…” he was nervous and you knew it. he always talked a lot more than usual when he was.

“shota” you swallow the lump of saliva that had formed in your throat, forcing yourself to speak. occasions like that don't come around twice. “i like you too.”

for a minute there is only silence. then he suddenly shifts to look you in the eyes.

“really y/n? really?” he seems happy, and you breathe again.

“i've been for a long time, to be honest.” you confess, scratching the back of your neck in embarrassment.

“me too.” he takes your hand, stroking the back of it with his thumb. “i could no longer pretend to see you only as a friend.”

“i so want to kiss you right now.” and you also want to beat yourself up for waiting so long and being a coward. yes, you would like to do both at the same time.

he smiles at you. with his free hand he caresses your cheek, before closing the distance from you and leaving a sweet and slow kiss on your lips.

your heart melts. and in silence you pray that this is just the first of thousands of other kisses, without knowing that he is doing the same.

How do you feel about jimins voice? I’m seeing a ton of discourse around it again and I would be lying if I didn’t think her needs more support

What do you mean "how do I feel about Jimin's voice?"

Why do you think I Stan Jimin? You think I Stan him just because I like his personality or because he's attractive?

If you think he needs "support" that's your opinion but don't go about acting like we should agree with your opinion. You think Jimin is the only Idol who's ever had a voice crack or he's the only Idol who's had a less than stellar vocal performance?

Do y'all even know what an actual live performance sounds like? Real live vocals with choreography would not sound the best 7 times out of 10. Like you have to be a vocal powerhouse with years of extreme vocal training to be able to dance and sing at the same time without sounding off.

Kpop groups do not sing live and the day they do sing live will be the day that they get criticized for their vocals. Y'all only have so much to say about Jimin because he's one of the few vocalists in the k industry who dances and sings live at the same time with his back track not doing all the work for him.

And despite the fact that other idols have had terrible vocal moments, including other members of BTS, Jimin is the only one they think of because he's Jimin.

So get the fuck out of here with that "he needs support" bullshit because if you're going to be saying this then you should be saying the same thing about most idols.

And on the topic of le sserafim, everyone loves to act like these festivals are the standard when it comes to live singing when most of the performers use heavy back track. Le sserafim could have done the same and avoided all this, but they decided to sing live because they also have gotten a lot of shit for using back tracks. And like I said before, I think they should only sing live here on out, not caring what kpop stans have to say. And I'm glad that these girls are not letting y'all tear them down because kpop stans love when idols are visibly affected by the hate.

Not everyone can be Beyonce, some artists are not going to sound the greatest live especially when you take into account the kind of vocals they have. Jimin has spent years singing live, singing the hardest parts of bts' songs when he isn't even the main vocalist (and it goes to show how great of a pull he has and how relevant he is that he's the only member being brought up in these conversations when he isn't even the main vocalist) Jimin isn't a main vocalist, he's a dancer before anything else. But y'all know there's nothing to critique about his dancing which is literally what he's known for and what he is and he's the best at it, so y'all hold on to vocals when he was never marketed as an outstanding vocalist. He doesn't owe anyone anything especially so far in his career.

What makes Jimin's singing or parts popular isn't his vocal prowess, or because we think he's the best live singer ever. We just like how he sounds. People have a lot to say about his vocal tone but still stream his music anyways so who gives a fuck? The critique was never about him sounding bad, they just don't like or understand his vocal tone even if they can't help listening to his music. You like his music for a reason, you bash him online but stream his music for a reason. Jimin always has armys admitting that they prefer his ai covers of other members songs for a reason. I like Jimin's voice and I will enjoy anything simply because he's the one singing it, I just don't understand why y'all can't accept that we do genuinely like his voice. It's ok to not like or understand something but you also need to understand that taste is subjective. It's ok not to like something, but it's weird to act like there's no way others would like that thing, you're not the only person in the world.

Jimin himself have said he takes vocal lessons. I don't think there's anymore support that someone with his tone could get because his voice has changed with time and age and overall he has a very light and airy voice which means he's prone to vocal strain. So if you don't like that then he's not for you. (This whole thing reminds me of Sia and how her voice would break in the official studio version. More singers should do that because I don't think y'all understand that there's all types of vocalists in the world.

Letting kpop stans who have never heard their own faves sing live get into your head is definitely a choice. Because the way y'all discuss his vocals at every turn you would think all his vocal performances were bad, but no Jimin just has a couple bad vocal moments just like every other singer on earth. Let's not even talk about the fact that a lot of singers y'all think sound good live use pitch correction and autotuned mics on stage.

Blinks especially hold on to the encore video or that video from 2018 for a reason. There was never any drag towards his actual performances. No one ever posted a video of Jimin full on performing like crazy or set me free pt2 and said he sounds bads. Jimin has been an idol for years and has done lots of encore performances. Most times idols have bad encore moment because they're not actively performing and because of that they get confused on how to go about it. Encores are supposed to be fun and silly,they are not supposed to sound great but now kpop Stans have ruined these fun moments after a win with their nitpicking. This fixation on encores started in 2022 btw because prior to that no one cared.

Start thinking for yourself instead of letting people whose faves never sing live convince you that someone who does is a bad singer. Y'all let people on social media tell you how to think or influence your own personal opinion and that's the problem.

If you were concerned that the girls were being overworked before, welcome to the year, Angelico proved you right ten times over! Refusing to lose their hype and cash flow, Venus would release their first full album, "BRAINROT," alongside the title track WORMZ4BRAINZ. "WORMZ4BRAINZ" received positive reviews from critics, who praised its production and the group's vocal delivery. It attained commercial success, peaking at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart and number three on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart.

Showing their full versatility this year, the girls would come back with their sixth mini album, "#dontlike" taking on a more "teen crush" type concept. The EP debuted at number two on the Gaon Album Chart and number six on the Billboard World Albums chart. The songs from the album also performed well digitally. "#dontlike" charted at number one on the Gaon Digital Chart and number three on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

Controversially, just two months after Jiah turned 19, Venus would release "Come N' Get It," a sexy summer mini album. While a group of Constellations were very vocal about how inappropriate it was for this concept to be done on a freshly legal adult, the general public didn't seem to care. "Come N' Get It" debuted at number 27 on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart. The music video, full of provocative dancing and the girls in swimsuits, was filmed two days after Jiah's birthday, resulting in another wave of concern from fans. Jiah would only concern fans further by saying she's been waiting to do a concept like this and was very excited to show this side of her.

Crossing the Line | Part 2

For Eddie Munson, it started with a tweet. A random little tweet in his mentions that ignited his incredibly hard to control impulsive curiosity. One of his long-time followers and his best friends little brother, a boy with a love of DnD who only begrudgingly followed him after he recorded one of his campaign sessions and posted it to YouTube, pinged him a mention with a single link in it to Instagram captioned “roast him he’s ruined Crazy Train!”

Michael Wheeler you little shit. He’d get Nancy on that one, Mike’s obsession with roasting people was getting mildly out of hand.

But Eddie was a curious soul and someone had apparently ruined an Ozzy masterpiece, so of course he followed that link, he didn’t even hesitate, even let out a cute little “boop” out loud as he clicked it.

Now. Eddie Munson, could have probably been classed as a bit of a music snob. He wouldn’t go too far with his snobbery, but for some people... it was just an unwritten rule that some people deserved the snobbery to the max. They deserved the shit storm that came with Eddie’s brutal honesty and lack of verbal filter.

And Nepo-babies with nothing better to do than *fix* legendary metal tracks with their top 10 bubblegum bitch bullshittery were 100% deserving of the roasting his bitchiest of little sheep had called for.

Did he go a little overboard over the following week while bored shitless in between customers at his shitty non-chain coffee shop gig? Absolutely. Did he feel bad? Absolutely not. It’d taken him all of five minutes to decide Steve Harrington was the worst.

Even if the nepo baby thing wasn’t enough, he was spotted with a different piece of arm candy every month, he had girls and guys falling all over themselves to get a glimpse from him in their general direction, like, there were articles about fights breaking out in the audience of his shows because fans couldn’t decide which one of them he looked at. He lived in some fancy ass house if his insta photos were anything to go by which no doubt his parents bought for him, he did way too many PR stunts to make it seem like he was a good guy, and while his voice was… okay, it wasn’t bad… passable, it was passable…

It sure as fuck needed to stay in its own goddamn lane.

So, the boredom in between the rare rush thanks to the Starbucks down the street was filled with what could only be described as obsessive online bullying, his ADHD hyper fixated so hard, but no way was he even going to notice it, so Eddie didn’t even feel bad about it. The guy had so many people falling all over themselves in hopes he’d notice them that his measly little insults would probably wind up just buried in the sea of hormones and the occasional desperate “COME TO BRAZIL” hashtag Brazilian flag and several thousand heart emojis.

And just as a fun little topper on the ice cream sundae that was his weeklong bitchfit into the void, a lovely little cherry on top, he covered Crazy Train on his channel. Not just the guitar bits, but he made chords and tabs for the lyrics too, letting his sweetheart sing for him, he never sang on his channel, vocals were just for the band gigs, his channel was primarily game music covers but this one, this one he declared “This is what it’s supposed to sound like” in the intro then rocked it.

Eddie was all about freedom of musical expression, but Steve Harrington could go suck a fat one if he thought he was getting away with ruining a masterpiece with his croony bullshit.

“So” The week after he’d finally put his one sided feud to rest, found one Nancy Wheeler, the instigators older sister sidling up to the counter mid-way through the most boring Sunday shift Eddie had ever worked in his life.

“Wheeleeerr, my sister from the most boring of misters, what can I get you babydoll?” He didn’t even need to ask, and she didn’t actually need to say it, he was already halfway through making her fancy little favourite, a cinnamon hazelnut latte with soy milk knowing she probably only had five minutes before she’d have to bolt again.

“Eddie… why have you spent the better part of a week harassing a celebrity on Instagram?”

“I think you mean an entire week, your little brother released the dogs of war. Aaaand the ADHD told me to do it.” He grabbed one of the little honey buns from the treats display and popped it onto a plate for her “forgive me honey bun?” A pet name AND a treat combined. She rolled her eyes fondly before accepting the free treat. “Why do you ask?”

“No reason.” There was absolutely a reason, but… honestly he brought whatever was coming to him upon himself. Sort of. She'd stand in his corner if shit got real. “I’ll handle Mike, don’t harass celebrities until you’re actually a celebrity, and even then, don’t harass celebrities.”

“It’s not like he’d notice, let’s be honest he has more fans than there are stars in the sky, all of them, and I do mean all of them, fully up for bearing his children.” Seahorse dads in the house! But also, mpreg too, ass babies unite. “It’s not like some rando having a questionably obsessive and lowkey aggressive meltdown over his ‘I’m bored as shit’ experiment would ever grace his radar.”

“I’m just saying Eddie, you never know who you’re going to reach with your online nonsense, if you ever want to get out of this place, you’re going to have to play nice with people from all walks of life, including nepotism babies.” The bark of laughter that erupted from Eddie Munson would have probably insulted most people, but Nancy had known him for years. He was listening, he was, there were just layers upon layers of automatic reactions to get through before he’d visibly take in what you were saying. “He could be nice, you never know.”

“Oh yeah, his royal highness seems lovely. Did you know people used to call him King Steve?” Seemed like the worst person on the planet masquerading as a semi-decent guy. Eddie wasn’t fooled in the slightest. “Your drink, mademoiselle!” He presented her with a large to-go cup filled with her favourite beverage.

“Don’t you have some odd little moniker on your youtube channel?” She asked behind the lip of her cup, before taking a sip and humming in appreciation. Even if he was a little shit, Eddie could make a mean latte.

“That’s a persona, it’s an online personality! People calling me Kas is different, people just called him that cause of how much ass he got. It’s weird, I bet he started it himself and paid his cronies to use it until it caught on.” That was good, maybe he’d pick his feud back up just to lay that one on him. “Seems very nepo baby of him, y’know? Can’t get a good nickname circling so he’s gotta buy one.”

“Wouldn’t his parents have bought it for him?”

“Ohhhh Wheeler good one! Nice nickname, did your daddy buy it for you? Babe, sugar plum, I love you. Imma write that one down for later.”

“Please don’t.” He was already off, and she caught sight of her smartwatch beeping about some meeting she was close to being late for. “Shoot! Gotta run, no more harassing celebrities!”

“I promise nothing!” Ah well, it probably wasn’t that big of a deal that Steve Harrington’s best friend had DM’d her, probably not a big deal at all, probably meant nothing... probably.

“I said, I want you to produce our new girl group.” Mrs. Kwon repeats herself. You rub your face in disbelief, hoping your CEO is joking.

“With all due respect Ma’am, I’m already a leader of a group and you put me in charge to become our group creative director. That’s quite a lot. Why not choose Eunji or Keenan for the job?” you plead your case. All your focus is for your co-ed group, Twelve Six, along with Eunji and Keenan. With being creative director for your group and sometimes groups under your label, you don't want more stuff in your hand.

“Well, Eunji is also helping out as a composer for Phoenix. And Keenan is broadening our A&R connections. We may be an up and coming label in this industry, but we are still short staffed.” Slumping back to your chair, gears in your brain are working hard to find a way out of this.

“Then why don’t you hire someone who has experience doing this kind of stuff? I know you have the money to find one. If the three of us are spread thin like this, when are we going to make music?”

Both of them become important members of Shamrock. As for Eunji, she trained OTB’s first GG, Phoenix in vocals. With her and her sister, they composed and produced music for the five member group, resulting in them competing in the Red Sea of girl groups right now. Also not to mention, your group Twelve Six. Your group’s music is able to breakthrough the public listeners. Decades after the last big co-ed group, finally Twelve Six changed that. Now, Korea sees Twelve Six as “Music for the people” because of your group penmanship and music move and touch many people's souls, not just in Korea but also the world.

“Because I trust you and I see potential in you to be a great producer.” there she goes again, putting huge faith in you. Ever since joining your label, Out of The Box (OTB) Studios, you have been one of her favourites. As an experience street dancer and performer, also having a brain being a portal to fantasy world says Mrs. Kwon, she has pushed you to the limits. She even goes as far as creating you a co-ed group with her youngest daughter Kwon Eunji and a Korean American rapper named Keenan Shin. The three of you were born on the same day and year, the twelfth of June, hence the name Twelve Six comes from.

With all the money in the world and full trust on you, Mrs. Kwon will do anything to help you to become one of the greatest artists in K-pop. But you doubt your ability if you are given another responsibility.

“Listen, Choi Sesang.” you sit up straight as your CEO calls you by full government, “Just please look into this file and consider it.” a brown file is presented in front of you. Reluctantly, you take it and open it. The first name on the paper almost made you jump out of your seat. You flip through the pages and surprisingly most of the names are familiar to you.

“Ma’am, there are-”

“Yes, they were idols. Some had troubles with their past companies and ended their contracts, and some I bought them out of their contracts.” bloody hell this rich woman. Her way of using money to get what she thinks is the best for the company still baffles you even after years knowing her, “They deserve a second chance and I know you’re up for the job. And rumour has it, you have your ways with girls.” she gives you a teasing look.

“Your daughter really has a nasty mouth, you know that?” Mrs. Kwon laughs at you cursing her youngest daughter.

“I don’t care if what Eunji implied was the truth or not. But I do have my own eyes.” she says after calming herself, “Your relationship with the Phoenix girls is admirable. They see you as a brotherly figure and a safe space to talk to. Those girls are strong minded and some are hard to get through, but you easily befriend the girls. That is enough for me to know you’re the right person for this project.” you look down to the file in your hand, taking in all what Mrs. Kwon says. A heavy sigh escapes your lips.

“Okay, I’ll do it.”

“Splendid!” she claps her hand in joy, “Also, there is one thing I need to tell you.”

Here you go, the catch in all of this, “Doing this job means you have got out of your way to get the job done. I know you are a good kid and have been staying clean until now. But sorry to say son, you have to get your hands dirty with this one. It's part of the industry, the system. No matter how long you try to avoid it, your time will come.”

Saying those words with a beaming smile so easily creeps you off. Well, a CEO of a K-pop company is not exactly the most morally right person in the world. Mrs. Kwon has always been brutal when it comes to business and you are led into one of her traps. Situations like this remind you where Eunji gets her nasty personality from.

Defeated, you know there’s no way out of this. Your fate has been sealed by the devil. Already, you try to drown your mind to come to terms with this twisted system. With heavy heart, you look straight at Mrs. Kwon. You can see insanity behind her eyes.

“So… do the job by any means necessary?”

“Correct! There you go, already getting a hang of it.” it’s supposed to be a laugh of joy for Mrs. Kwon, but it feels like she’s laughing at you. Soon enough, you will be playing with people's lives just like her.

“The girls will be coming in next week. Prepare yourself, mind and body. I have a feeling you will like them.” with a smirk, she leaves the room. You groan as you throw yourself back into the chair. The dreaded day is near. By next week you will become one of those industry scumbags. You love performing and singing, but you despise the industry. Being in it long enough to know stuff. The girl that you will be working with surely also knows a thing or two.

Thinking about your doomed future only makes you mad at yourself. Feeling suffocated, you pack your stuff and go home, not before leaving a text in the group chat.

These three days have been orientation and waiting for the rest of the girls to join the company. Today is the day where they all finally present and training will begin to ramp up.

You arrive at the company at eight. Not wanting any problem, you do a morning check up every day just to make sure. After doing that, you take a sip of your black coffee while looking through the girl's profile again. You seriously can not wrap your head around the names on the list. Mrs. Kwon really is a crazy businesswoman for getting these girls to become trainees again in your company.

“Damn they’re hot.” startled, you almost spilled your hot coffee onto the papers. You look back to see Keenan peeking over your shoulder. His curly dark brown hair really needs a cut. It almost pokes your eye.

“Could you not sneak up on me like that?”

“You’re the one who’s busy staring at these profiles.”

“Hey!” he takes a seat next to you and slides the file over to him. You let him be, as you need a break from reading those papers over and over again.

“Still can’t believe they are trainees here.” Keenan says.

“Me too.”

“Mrs. Kwon is one damn good negotiator.”

“You can say that again. It’s like a person playing DnD and always rolls Nat 20 on persuasion.” Keenan laughs at your cheeky joke.

“Yeah… so, which one you gonna fuck first?”

“I- what?! Bro, shut up.” you punch his arm only for him to laugh even more.

“Come on, seriously bro. There are some hot chicks right here. If I were you, I would try every single one of them.”

“But I’m not you dumbass. I’m not some guy who will fuck every girl he sees.”

“Not yet.”

“Fuck off.” Keenan's laugh now turns hysterical. He’s always been like this. Being from Brooklyn makes him more frontal than your average Korean. He’s been teasing you since both of you met. With your ability in speaking English, you bonded easily with him. You also help him get accustomed with his homeland culture. But it seems you can’t take Brooklyn out of Keenan.

You take back your file from Keenan and walk off, “Ay! Where are you going?”

“Training is almost starting! I’m needed in the dance room!” you shout back at him.

“Okay then! Tell me if you score on one of them!” you don’t look back and flip him off. You can hear Keenan laugh fading as you walk further away from him.

The dance room for trainees is in the basement. Everything related to the trainees are in the basement. Only the ones who debut are the only ones who can experience the freedom of the city view from the artist dance room upstairs. For the trainees, the dark and damp basement is their prison. Some even will never see the day of light from the dungeon. Sound of blaring music can be heard at the end of the hallway. The girls may be stretching right now.

Other than being the main producer for the group, Mrs. Kwon also personally assigned you to be one of the dance instructors. Talk about a burden. It’s not the first time you are teaching a class. During trainee days, you already helped to train the fellow members of Shamrock and Phoenix. It’s just for a few sessions because Shamrock have a capable and experienced dance line and for Phoenix they are natural performers. Not the same can be said for this group. Maybe one or two names stood out, but they are nowhere near the talent as your fellow labelmates when they first join the company. And your part is to train them to be on par to standards.

Standing before the dance room door, you take a deep breath before twisting the door handle. The sound of your arrival alerts the girls. Quickly, they line up in a line with one of them scrambling to turn off the music before joining the line.

“Good morning PD-nim.” they greet you in unison.

“Good morning. At ease.” you say that, but they are clearly tense. Fifteen girls standing in front of you. You recognize their faces with a few unfamiliar ones. Some of these girls had a respectable career as idols. They are without a group due to them being in a project group making their contract length shorter than normal or suing their way out of their contract because of how stupid their company was. Some were in a group that disbanded. Others are trainees from different companies. Now, here they are starting from zero once more.

Knowing you have to keep professionalism, you close your eyes and take a deep breath. Starting today, you will have these girls' fate on strings. Toying with their dreams, giving them false hope. Just like Mrs. Kwon you thought. You open your eyes and give them a big smile.

This is when you notice Mrs. Kwon foul tricks, attacking your weakness: boobs. Most of these girls have sizeable to huge tits. The only member with absolutely no existing preconception, Shogo best represents the potential of the group. In a strange sense, he's the easiest member for fans to invest in, based on all they know. A pretty face and a blank slate, perfect to project boundless expectations upon.

Yonghyung performed well on the show, staying within the top ten throughout the competition until the final round, where he ranked in 12th, missing out on the opportunity to debut by one place. Still remembered fondly by the shows most avid watchers for his boyish charm, serious approach to music and playful temperament, Yonghyung's taken a handful of small gigs since his stint on the show, including modelling and radio show hosting. Most notably, in 2023, Yonghyung appeared in a BL webseries, giving him one thing none of the other boys can boast: a record of previous employment in the entertainment industry.

Then, his three mixtapes, countless freestyles and half-finished songs uploaded to Soundcloud, and all video footage of the endless club performances he'd given were silently scrubbed from the internet, the only evidence of his hard work now traded underhandedly via google drive links and discord servers. A small section of Kijung's fanbase survives, but it had been so small to begin with that, until netizens began digging after the WARRIOR video, most people didn't know all of that wasted hard work existed until it was gone.

MEDUSA are a four member girl group consisting of members Choi Gain, Son Jiyeon, Yu Chaerin and Hirono Ikumi, better known by her stage name, Hero. The group was put together by Valentine Records in 2018, when fourteen trainees were selected from a pool of fifty to be sorted into three debut teams. Dubbed Debut Team B, the five girls to be selected for the girl group prepared alongside their to-be brother groups Tarot and Sour Candy for two years. Medusa were second to make their debut in late 2020, following several delays necessitated by the abrupt departure of former member Zhang Shiyu, who was unceremoniously dropped by Valentine after being photographed on several dates with fellow trainee Jung Jumin just days after the announcement of their planned debut date. Despite their rocky beginnings, the group debuted to a level of success that even the lofty Valentine Records hadn't expected. With their debut single Paint The Town skyrocketing up the charts, Medusa quickly earned the highest selling debut under the company, and broke many other records, cementing them as monster rookies straight out of the gate.

Medusa are known for their high budget, cinematic music videos. Their visual media depicts the girls in the role of superheroes (though this could be through a number of different lenses; from comic books to morning cartoons, blockbuster movies to magical girl anime, etc.) Medusa's sound is often described as chaotic and cool, characterised by a slick production and often a playful delivery. Medusa's music tends to centre empowerment and explore the subject of gender. This, alongside the members' own values, has made them a common target of antifeminist groups; resulting in an influx of negative articles and rumours spreading about the girls throughout their career. Since the villain figures of the Medusa's hero themed videos are typically male, the backlash of Medusa's (corporately inoffensive) female empowerment message became so ridiculous that the group were accused of 'inciting violence against men.' Though it's unconfirmed that it was in relation to the article, the same day it was posted member Choi Gain tweeted; 'this is the happiest day of my life.' The hate train reached it's peak in 2022, when their song Trash was banned from broadcast due to 'derogatory language.' The song, which encourages a third party to dump their unfaithful boyfriend, was taken out of context, and misrepresented as 'man-hating' by certain online communities, exacerbating the hate thrown Medusa's way. The song was not altered or resubmitted for approval, and promotions for the track were cut from a full music show run to a few fanmeetings. Unconfirmed rumours spread online that the Trash era was 'cancelled' because the girls refused to censors it's lyrics in order to appeal the ban. This is widely regarded as fake today, but it does align with the group's activity suddenly slowing to a crawl, which some believe to be Valentine' idea of a punishment. (What record label would be stupid enough to keep money out of their own pockets just out of spite? Well. Valentine Records.) No news of Medusa's comeback was given throughout the majority of 2023 until the final quarter of the year. Though November saw the release of their first full album, Made You Look!, which achieved critical acclaim and won the group Best Album at the 33rd Seoul Music Awards, promotion and rollout for the record was nowhere near as in depth as those for Sour Candy or Tarot's first full lengths. Despite the success of the album, the conclusion of it's promotions ushered in another period of inactivity for the group, with only very recent reports confirming work on their next record was underway.

While Valentine's lazy management of a group with such selling power is baffling to most, Medusa have still amassed a huge, vocal fanbase off the back of their talent, musical quality, and tenacity in the face of constant scrutiny. However, no matter how many charts they top, or awards they win, there's no hiding from the unsurmountable expectations on their shoulders to uphold the legacy set by the legendary girl groups to have come out of Valentine Records before them. Living up to those expectations, however, would probably seem a little less Sisyphean for the girls of Medusa if the man who'd benefit most from them reaching the top would quit kicking them back down the mountain again.

MYUNG DOHA is the MAIN VOCALIST of PRISMATIC. she was a well known OUTSIDER MEDIA trainee and even lent her VOCALS to many DEMOS under the company, as well as appearing in the survival show CHOOSE YOUR PLAYER. it was also thought that she was a possible member in the lineup for BLUE MOON.

MYUNG DOAH was born in SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA. her father was a classical musician, while her mother was an opera singer, so she had been close to the music industry her entire life. at the age of five she began to take singing lessons for fun, though she had dreams of being a singer like her mother. as she got older, she decided to steer away from the opera side of singing and started to just sing and make covers for fun and eventually started to post them online when she was fifteen. shortly after, DOAH’S covers started to gain traction and she was asked to audition for many companies. DOAH made it into OUTSIDER MEDIA, training with the members of BLUE MOON, though being cut from the final lineup. she was still a well known trainee, however, and many waited for her debut. she, along with LENNIE, participated in OUTSIDER MEDIA’S survival show CHOOSE YOUR PLAYER, but was one of the first eliminated and followed MAISIE to LOVELY RECORDS when she decided to move over to debut in PRISMATIC.

BAE JINJOO is the LEAD VOCALIST and VISUAL of PRISMATIC. she was a well known JYP TRAINEE, appearing on SIXTEEN where she was eliminated early on. she also appeared on IDOL SCHOOL, though did not make it into the final lineup and decided to give up on idol life until CHLOE KWON offered her a part in PRISMATIC.

BACKGROUND!

BAE JINJOO was born in JEJU, SOUTH KOREA. from a young age she had seen idols on TV and decided that was what she wanted to do when she got older. she begged her parents to let her take dance classes and vocal lessons, which after a few years of begging, they finally agreed to. she began auditioning for company’s very young after again convincing her parents and finally passed the JYP audition at THIRTEEN. she began training and eventually appeared on SIXTEEN, though was one of the first people eliminated from the show. after the end of the show, she went back to training, though she left the company and appeared on IDOL SCHOOL in 2017 as a last shot at being an idol. she made it far into the show, but again failed to make it into the final lineup. JINJOO gave up on her dream of being an idol, going back to school and going through college. she had almost forgotten about her trainee days when CHLOE KWON, one of her best friends as a trainee under JYP, told her she was creating a girl group and wanted her to be part of it. she accepted and debuted as a member of PRISMATIC.

MAISIE PARK is the LEADER, MAIN DANCER, VOCALIST, and FACE OF THE GROUP of PRISMATIC. she is well known for having debuted many times before in the groups MISS KISS in 2015 and IZ*ONE in 2018.

MAISIE PARK was born in NEW YORK, NEW YORK. when she was little she often took dance classes and even competed in many DANCE COMPETITIONS as she grew up. during one of her DANCE COMPETITIONS, she was scouted for GLOWLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT, where she joined, quickly being put in the debut lineup for their group MISSKISS. after a year of inactivity the group disbanded and she went to OUTSIDER MEDIA with fellow members DELLA and TAEHA. the three of them were placed in the debut lineup up BLUE MOON, though prior to the group debuting, she appeared on PRODUCE 48 with DELLA and JINRI. she was the only member of the OUTSIDER MEDIA trainees to make it into the debut lineup of IZ*ONE, placing 7TH overall. she stayed as a member of IZ*ONE until the group disbanded in 2021 and was thought to join BLUE MOON, though she refused and went back to being a trainee under the company. in 2022, she moved to LOVELY RECORDS to become part of the debut lineup for PRISMATIC.

PRIYA DEHLAVI is the LEAD VOCALIST of PRISTMATIC. she is known for almost participating in the survival show, CHOOSE YOUR PLAYER, though was pulled from the lineup.

PRIYA DEHLAVI was born in KANCHEEPURAM, INDIA. as a kid, PRIYA had no intentions of wanting to be a singer or be famous in any way, though her friends and family had always thought she had a pretty singing voice. when she was EIGHTEEN, a video of her singing was posted and started making its way around the internet. a recruiter from OUTSIDER MEDIA then got into contact with her and asked her to audition for the company. PRIYA agreed to an audition, not thinking to would go far, but she ended up making it into the company. throughout her time training, she had basically been promised a spot in the company’s upcoming survival show, CHOOSE YOUR PLAYER, though was one of the members that had been pulled out of the lineup in favor of other trainees. in 2022, PRIYA moved from OUTSIDER MEDIA to LOVELY RECORDS in hope that she would finally be able to debut in their upcoming girl group PRISMATIC.

LENNIE TORRES is the LEAD DANCER, VOCALIST, and RAPPER of PRISMATIC. she is known for appearing on the OUTSIDER MEDIA SURVIAL SHOW, CHOOSE YOUR PLAYER, where she placed 2ND, though due to outrage of alleged VOTE MANIPULATION, she was pulled from the final line up of the group.

LENNIE TORRES was born in PHOENIX, ARIZONA. LENNIE had taken some dance classes as a kid, though as she got older she quickly grew out of them. in LATE 2018, LENNIE started a TIKTOK account called LENNIEBBY, which steadily gained followers and in 2020, she was asked to join OUTSIDER MEDIA. LENNIE quickly became a trainee, though she had little to no training and was pretty slow at picking up the skills she needed to become an idol. still, the company pushed for her to be a member of the survival show CHOOSE YOUR PLAYER, where she was often criticized for being far behind the other trainees in terms of skill. she did manage to place 2ND on the show, which sparked a lot of outrage from viewers with rumors of VOTING MANIPULATION, though it was never proven. still, the company pulled her from the lineup, keeping the group as SIX members instead. in 2022, LENNIE then moved over to LOVELY RECORDS where she became a member in PRISMATIC.

CHARLOTTE 'CHARLIE' KWON is the VOCALIST, RAPPER, and MAKNAE of PRISMATIC. she is most well known for being the younger sister of LOVELY RECORDS ARTIST and CEO, CHLOE KWON.

CHARLOTTE ‘CHARLIE’ KWON was born in VANCOUVER, CANADA. CHARLIE had never known her father as he left soon after she was born. growing up as the younger sister of CHLOE KWON, CHARLIE wanted to do everything that she did, often begging CHLOE to try and teach her how to play guitar like she knew how to do, though she had a very rough time picking it up and quickly gave up. her sister moved to SOUTH KOREA to become a trainee when CHARLIE was ELEVEN and she immediately wanted to follow her, though her mother wouldn’t let her audition for any companies and said maybe when she was older, though it had always been more of a passing thought for CHARLIE unlike how much CHLOE had wanted to be a singer. it wasn’t until her sister returned home during her long hiatus at the beginning of her career that the thought of becoming an idol even crossed her mind again. she started to try and audition for companies, not wanting her sister to go back to KOREA alone, though she kept getting rejected from all of them. CHLOE offered to try and train her the best she could, though she eventually had to move back to KOREA, leaving CHARLIE to try and teach herself some things. she kept working and auditioning for many companies to no avail and in 2022, when CHLOE opened her own company, she allowed her to come under the company as a trainee. CHLOE had been planning her first girl group as a FIVE membered group, though eventually added CHARLIE to the lineup last minute and she became a member or PRISMATIC.

ENGIRLS, also known as ENHYPEN GIRLS (엔하이픈 소녀들), is a fictional sub-unit of the ten-member co-ed group, ENHYPEN, which was formed through the survival show, I-LAND. The unit consists of the three female members of the group: Aiko, Blake, and Ruruka. They debuted on November 30th, 2020, with the song, 'Really Bad Boy,' as a part of ENHYPEN's debut EP, 'BORDER: DAY ONE.'

Despite their victory on I-LAND, ENGIRLS had a challenging debut because they were the only three girls out of the twenty-four female contestants to make it to the debuting team. Many fans, international and domestic, accused MNET of voting manipulation or stated that they should have debuted an all-boy group by choosing three other male contestants to take their place. This only increased when their debut EP was released, and they were introduced as a sub-unit, with both the girls and the boys having their own unit songs.

Regardless, ENHYPEN went on to have a successful debut and remain one of the top artists of their generation.

MEMBERS PROFILE

Kobayashi Aiko was born on January 17, 2002, in New York City, New York, to a businessman father and a stay-at-home mother. She is the second eldest of four children and the only one of her siblings pursing a music career. From a young age, she has loved music and can play different instruments, including the piano, violin, guitar, and drums.

Later, when she was five, Aiko and her family moved to Osaka, Japan, due to her father’s job relocation. While in Osaka, Aiko continued to pursue music, picking up vocal lessons and later being scouted by SM Entertainment in 2014. Despite her parent’s disapproval, she went on to train under SM for four years, becoming an SMROOKIE and later participating in the survival show Produce 48. She was eliminated in episode 5 of the show and continued to train at SM until leaving at the end of 2018 to join BigHit Music.

After that, she had a fight with her parents, who wanted her to come home to continue her education, but Aiko stood firm and begged for another chance to prove herself. She later joined I-LAND and made it to the debuting team.

Blake Akiyama was born on December 18, 2002, in Houston, Texas, to a surgeon father and model mother. She is an only child because her mother had complications after Blake was born, which led to her being doted on by her family as the only female granddaughter. Despite this, Blake is a very humble girl because her grandmother, her father’s mother, taught her the importance of hard work and appreciation for those around her.

Blake has taken dance classes since she was four and excels in many different genres. She has a deep passion for dancing and has won many awards for local competitions. Her dance teacher at the time had nothing but praise for her and has stated that Blake is one of the best pupils she’s had the honor to teach.

Blake’s parents later divorced when she was eight, and her father received full custody of her because her mother wished to pursue her modeling career. Since then, her mother has been in and out of her life. At fourteen, Blake was scouted as a model and took on some gigs despite her father not wanting her to. Still, he allowed her in order to make her happy. Blake later stopped due to the mental and physical toll it took on her.

She was scouted online due to a dance cover she posted on her Instagram and joined SOURCE Music in 2018 until she joined I-LAND and debuted into ENHYPEN.

Nishimura Ruruka was born on December 9, 2005, in Okayama, Japan. She is the twin sister of Nishimura Riki, also known as Ni-ki, and has two other sisters. Like her family, Ruruka has a passion for dancing and has been dancing alongside her siblings for as long as she can remember. 

Ruruka has taken gymnastics classes since she was four, alongside dance classes, and originally wanted to pursue an athletic career. its been a couple of days since i made the tough choice to cut ties and temporarily walk away from a place that i love really really deeply.

but i’ve had some time to reflect and come to some conclusions about myself.

now excuse me while i vent out loud:

1) the phrase “once an addict, always an addict” is true. just because i don’t take pills anymore doesn’t mean i haven’t found a way to feed the craving of being addicted to something. im not 100% sure what that addiction is; maybe it’s that im a sucker for pain, maybe it’s i can’t walk away when i know i should, maybe it’s fucking caffeine (it’s 97% caffeine).

2) everyone heals and handles things differently. again, back to my past with addiction; some addicts can heal with still being able to be around the thing they are addicted to. i learned a long time ago, i am not that person. i have a hard time knowing when to walk away, but once i do… its like breathing fresh air. it hurts like a bitch sometimes but its also one of the best things for you. sometimes we get so blind with those rose colored glasses on, that we truly can’t see our own faults until we step back and reflect

3) i’m an angry person. i always have been and probably always will be. i’ve dealt with a lot of shitty things in my life. i’ve lost people who didn’t deserve to be taken away. i’ve watched some of the most vile humans get away with horrible offenses. i have been abused and assaulted. i’m angry. and there’s little i can do to shake that anger. however, i can control it. i can lock it away and deal with it in a healthy manner than just let it explode all over the place.

4). God knows what’s best for you. now, i don’t mean to get all religious on yall. i have struggled with my faith for years. I went through a period of time of questioning who God is and what his intentions are. If this great and almighty God sent his son to die to end our suffering… why are people still suffering? I still struggle with my faith, but i am relearning to put my trust in him and know that He is putting things in my life he knows I can overcome.

And finally,

5) never feel bad for doing things for yourself. i have been so well trained to put other peoples feelings above my own. for years, i have bit my tongue and told myself “i can’t say that, that’ll hurt their feelings” and let people continue to roll over me. believe it or not… i hate conflict. i hate awkward situations. i hate feeling like im being suffocated and i can’t breathe. i have become more vocal (good and bad thing) in speaking up when i have been hurt. it’s a slow learning process and sometimes it comes back to bite me in the ass cause i’m thrust into another situation i don’t know how to handle and the anxiety builds and then there’s tears and all that shit. but i have learned i should never feel bad for doing things for myself.

anyway, i know this is just a long ass vent that nobody is gonna read, but i hope maybe, just maybe this reaches someone who has been feeling the same way i have these past couple months.

i know not everyone has a great support system in real life that they can rely on when things get hard. i can honestly tell you that without some of the people in my everyday life and online life being there and helping me and offering me an ear to listen while i vent and scream at the world… i don’t think i’d still be here. but i want yall to know, if you need a place to vent and scream at the world, i am here for you. and i’ll do whatever i can to get you the help and resources if you need it. or if you just wanna get shit off your chest.

Alright, alright, I know it’s a little late. I got distracted! A human error. From a human. But anyway, I’m back with the promised rundown of KIHYUN’s NCT U eras—but I’m ditching the rankings this time around, as the majority (up until UNIVERSE in 2021) took place in and around KIHYUN’s BAD eras. Everything else is the same, though, so.. Have fun!

EMPATHY  2018  GLOWSTICKS & (FAKE) GUCCI

RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC just over a week after his seventeenth birthday, the first whole NCT album was both a somewhat-old (he’d been promoting for a good two years by then, after all) but still refreshing experience for Kihyun. Participating in BLACK ON BLACK, GO, and BOSS, the vocalist threw every part of himself into it as usual—and maybe even a little more so, reinvigorated by the fact he was collaborating with members from the other unit (and ones from an upcoming one) that he’d only ever trained with in the past. He enjoyed the more mature feel of the teasers for GO, as well as the music video and the song itself—it was during this era (although it would only really become more apparent during WE GO UP promotions in September of that same year, and during EMPATHY he kept this thought mainly to himself) that he was starting to feel like the whole childish concept was something he wanted to be rid of, that he wanted to trade in for something different; and GO fit that vision perfectly. He had a notable amount of fun on the set of the music video, and slated filming it as the ‘best thing he’d get to do all year,’ despite the fact they were only three months into said year.

Due to the would-be unspoken rule of Kihyun only making an effort to have any sort of online presence when he wasn’t the biggest fan of an album’s concept or music, he was fairly offline during this era—the only actual content fans ended up getting was in the official music videos & the behind-the-scenes and dance practices for said videos. They made the most of what they were given, choosing firstly to poke fun at what they’d styled him in—one of his outfits included a horrendous rip-off Gucci jacket that was noticeable from a mile away—and secondly to enjoy the interactions he had with the members of 127 (the EMPATHY era showcased his bond with members like Johnny, Jaehyun, and Jungwoo to the public for the first time) and members like Ten and Kun, who hadn’t yet found their place in a permanent unit—although it wasn’t long in the making, as would be proved by WayV’s debut the next year. This was most prevalent with the behind-the-scenes of the BOSS music video in particular, a clip of Kihyun and Jaehyun chasing each other around dangerously close to the literal circle of fire featured in one of the later scenes while Mark watched on on the obvious verge of panic going quite viral online.

MY  FAVOURITE  MOMENT: ⠀GO  MV  BEHIND

Kihyun getting a little too ambitious while balancing on the metal of the train tracks and nearly falling flat on his face, much to the delight of Chenle and horror of Jeno—who ran over to see if he was alright, and then proceeded to nearly trip himself up also. The nearly-fall didn’t deter him in the slightest and he continued to walk down the line, Jeno stepping up behind to follow along (he noticeably wobbled more than a few times, but still stuck with it if only to give Kihyun some company). Chenle got bored of watching—or, as Haechan called it, “got FOMO,” and it didn’t take long of observing the other two before he was running over and trying it out for himself also. Him and Kihyun were walking on parallel sides, with Jeno in the middle after having given up on the whole balancing shtick; watching as the two in front of him reached out to hold on another’s hands and intercepting so they were both grabbing hold of one of his instead. Mark cooed, Haechan pretended to throw up in his mouth.

RESONANCE PT 1  2020  VOCAL FRY & BADLY DISGUISED VODKA

IN THE MIDDLE OF running around and getting up to many a scandal with someone that was, really, doing him more harm than good, NCT came back together as a full group to release RESONANCE PT 1. For the album he traded his newfound clubhopping hobby for what’s considered by some fans as one of his best (although criminally short, what with him only participating in VOLCANO and DÉJÀ VU—something that many suspect was a sort of punishment for the bad press he’d been bringing to both Dream and, by proxy, the group as a whole by that time) performances in the entirety of his career thus far. During VOLCANO he gave listeners a few seconds of rap lines, a skill of his that had previously been rarely utilised, Kihyun’s voice taking on a raspier edge that he later mentioned off-handedly as being his “Taeyong impression,” which was met with both positive and negative reactions—as is the same with most things any idol says or does while they mention another. DÉJÀ VU saw him back to his standard vocalist position, but many slated his lines as being their favourite, or his tone standing out amongst the rest in a certain moment. Altogether, despite his public image still not being anywhere close to being fully repaired, at least he wasn’t being accused of being talentless to add fuel to the fire.

What was adding fuel to it, however, were the leaked photos of him with a shiny silver flask halfway to his mouth on the way to a taxi. It was after hours, hardly being able to be accused of drinking on the job (but with a job like being an idol, it would be a little difficult to blame him for doing so), but it still sent a few people into an outrage—and Kihyun’s response didn’t help matters either, the simple ‘whoops’ he sent on Bubble enough to prompt some into showing their truce stance on Kihyun and his situation as of late (that being, of course, that they hated him). Most took it in good humour and laughed along with him, seeing as those photos and content put out by the company were all they got to see of him for the whole era. Even his moments in things such as behind-the-scenes videos were frighteningly scarce, only appearing for a scant second or two before he was being whisked off by another member or the camera had decided to abruptly cut away in the middle of his screentime where in the past it most likely would’ve lingered a little longer. It was sort of a tug of war between the good and the bad things throughout the whole promotion period.

MY  FAVOURITE  MOMENT:  KYUNDERY  INSTAGRAM  LIVE

It was almost like a miracle, the day Hendery logged into the NCT account and decided to start a live—and with Kihyun, no less. They were a little drunk, and didn’t care if the people watching realised that. In fact, them being tipsy probably played a part in the decision to go live, so maybe it was really something they should be thankful for. The majority of the time on live was spent by the pair taking turns scrolling through the filters and laughing themselves into hysterics, so much so they could barely get a word out between their fits. When they’d finished filter sampling they held an impromptu karaoke session, despite the fact their voices were cracking a minimum of twice for every line they belted out into the empty company room they’d holed themselves up in (and, when Hendery tilted the phone to show viewers their set up, it almost looked like they were camping for the night—there were a few pillows and a blanket they’d hoarded from somewhere, snacks galore, bags and a few empty bottles and one singular shoe). Beggars couldn’t be choosers in the Kihyun-content regard for this era, but it just so happened that the one thing they did get (or rather, most of them got, as some missed the notification and had to watch clips elsewhere) was something they could hold dear.

RESONANCE PT 2  2020  LUCKY NUMBERS & LEGO SETS

STILL RUNNING AROUND, still not the fan favourite he once was, most were expecting much of the same treatment during RESONANCE PT 2 as Kihyun got during PT 1. However, to the surprise of all of them, he actually received a little more screentime this promotion period around—most likely because of his involvement in the tracks 90’S LOVE and WORK IT, where there was far more extra content to go alongside just the music (as well as RAISE THE ROOF, although that didn’t receive a music video like the former two), but most fans decided to take it as the plus it undoubtedly was. He looked happier than he had in months skating around with Mark and Jeno, catching up with Ten, cracking easy jokes with both Shotaro and Sungchan in his attempts to get to know them better despite the slump he’d been in for most of the year thus far, and of course messing around to his heart’s content with Johnny and Hendery on the WORK IT set. His normal full-of-energy self was back—not that it had ever left, but he’d seemed far more tired, almost lifeless, in the months running up to the dual albums—and to see him so sunny again seemed to brighten the mood of a few of the members he was particularly close to in tandem. 

As was beginning to become the (unfortunate) norm, hardly any extra content atop what the company gave the fans came from Kihyun himself—no lives, no posts, barely any messages on Bubble, the list only went on. Some said he was simply following his own tradition of staying quiet if he liked the music making up the album he was in the middle of promoting, but most people were still under the impression that it was due to the scandals and articles and countless rumours that had completely taken over his public image with fans—decidedly for the worse, seeing as it ended up getting so bad once that people were left wondering if he was going to be kicked out of NCT on the whole. The mood was beginning to dip again, fans taking his complete lack of presence that wasn’t company-mandated to mean that they were going to be seeing even less of him in the future. Until—a post from Kihyun, a simple selca on their Twitter account of him in his 48 hockey jersey from the 90’S LOVE music video, the two simple words ‘lucky number’ as his only caption. You’d think he’d just dropped a movie-length vlog from the amount of people celebrating his (brief) return, the words ‘HE’S BACK’ trending for a few hours or so as most of his fanbase frantically changed their profile picture to the aforementioned selca.

No one was happier to see Kihyun than Johnny, and that fact was apparent from a mile away. They were attached at the hip the second the cameras stopped rolling, always visible in the background glued to each other’s sides even if they didn’t get much time talking to the camera for the BTS video. When it was finally their turn to give their small interview (or rather, when it was Johnny’s turn, and he dragged Kihyun along with him by the arm) Johnny was resting his head atop Kihyun’s and buttoning and unbuttoning the blazer he was wearing for that scene while he spoke. Kihyun even cracked a smile or two at the jokes that had obviously only been told for the sake of his reaction, and contributed a few words here and there. Another moment from the video widely loved was from the scene on the wide open field, where he was captured sprinting away from Jungwoo giving chase, Jaemin and Johnny close behind, wide grins on all of their faces and the faint sound of laughter being picked up. Jisung was standing and watching with a small smile, with the rest making bets on who was going to trip over their very-much-not-made-for-running shoes first.

UNIVERSE  2021  BASEBALL BATS & BETTER DAYS

WELL ON THE WAY to being fully back to his normal self again (despite it being a couple years in the making), UNIVERSE saw Kihyun far happier than the previous two promotion periods, almost reaching his mood during the EMPATHY era. Participating in songs UNIVERSE (LET’S PLAY BALL), OK!, BIRTHDAY PARTY, and of course BEAUTIFUL, it wasn’t as if he was at a loss for things to do. He admitted it was tiring, but also that it was fun—because with the more songs he got to work on, the more time he was given the chance to spend with members not in his unit (namely Hendery, Xiaojun, Johnny, and Jungwoo—although he did talk a little more with Shotaro and Sungchan also, stating proudly to the camera on one occasion that they’d been thinking about going out for dinner one night in the future). He also found it fun because he enjoyed every track on the album, even if he didn’t make an appearance on most of them. Despite the hate some of them got from the fanbase (BIRTHDAY PARTY in particular) he held firm and even sent a few Bubble messages defending them in earnest, complete with angry kaomojis and one (not really) accidental swear. Kihyun saw UNIVERSE as his chance to prove he was ready to be a proper representative of the neos after his nearly-two-year-long slump, and was truly giving it his all.

Like the mood maker he’d always been, this dramatic change for the better in his demeanour affected everyone’s around him also. A few member’s smiles always seemed a little wider now that Kihyun was nearly back to normal, after they felt far more confident in the hope he’d bounce back stronger than ever, and benefit all of them—Dream members in particular, of course—while doing so. UNIVERSE was also an era in which Kihyun put his extrovert nature to work and gave fans interactions with members they’d barely been allowed to see him share one word with—the main ones being Doyoung, Kun, and the most surprising to a fairly large amount of fans, Winwin. Despite only appearing with the latter on BEAUTIFUL (as it was a whole-group song), once things like the jacket BTS began to be released, they were made witness to the bond the two of them shared; far closer than apparently most had ever dreamed of them being. Kihyun was as affectionate with the Wayv member as any other person in the group, but as he only did with a few of them, Winwin was reciprocating—a returned hug here, tolerating a little handholding there. He wasn’t exactly matching the boundless enthusiasm the acts of affection were performed with, but no one was really expecting that anyway. It just went to show that Kihyun could pull most people into his orbit, even if it was just for a moment or two.

MY  FAVOURITE  MOMENT:  ALBUM  UNBOXING

Placed into a group with Johnny, Hendery, and Shotaro, Kihyun was having the time of his life. He went to lengths to include the newer member in all of his conversations, light-heartedly prodding at him like he’d known him for years, and even making an effort to slow down his usual break-neck pace of speaking so that Shotaro would have a better chance of understanding him fully—the ribbing could’ve gone a lot worse if the latter thought Kihyun was actually poking fun at him, but thankfully Shotaro took it well and even gave it right back on a couple of occasions, which made all four of them burst into laughter. For his pulls, Kihyun received a Kun photocard (he couldn’t have ripped off his phone case fast enough, with enough force that he nearly sent both it and the HOT SAUCE era Jeno that was still inside flying across the room), a Johnny poster (which the 127 member was delighted about, and demanded to have a picture sent to him later of said poster tacked up on Kihyun’s wall), a Jaemin postcard, and a Mark sticker—which Kihyun immediately stuck on his phone case also.

GOLDEN AGE  2023  POLO SHIRTS & ..PURPOSE?

HAVING MOVED FAR PAST all that was weighing on his mind during previous whole-group slbums, Kihyun went above and beyond for GOLDEN AGE. Featuring in INTERLUDE: OASIS, THE BAT, ALLEY OOP, and obviously GOLDEN AGE, he made sure to throw more than he’d ever thrown before into recording. He was fully aware that the past years hadn’t been his best, and despite already making amends during UNIVERSE, he still wanted to prove his worth all over again. Everything was fully behind him, and it showed in the sparkle in his eyes and brightness of his laughter that came alongside every appearance of his in any piece of behind-the-scenes content. Always smiling, always energetic, always wanting to make whoever he was laugh, even if it was just for a second. Although he did stick to his usual (and very obviously favourite) members—Mark, Jeno, Chenle, Johnny, Hendery, Niko—he did make sure to wrap all of them in a too-tight hug and hang off of them while they talking to other members or giving mini interviews to cameras at some point or another. ‘Spreading the love,’ he called it, to which Chenle beside him, through poorly contained snickers, quipped that he was also probably ‘spreading diseases,’ which earned him a punch in the stomach.

Kihyun even made an effort to show up (often unannounced) to sets of the track videos he wasn’t involved in—namely PADO and KANGAROO. There he enjoyed himself thoroughly, poking at Jaehyun’s hair, dragging Donghyuck off to who-knows where, and making fun of Hendery’s outfit on one set, and latching onto Renjun’s back, avoiding small talk with Yangyang at all costs with red ears, and cooing obnoxiously loudly at Jisung on the other. He opened his copy of the album on a live with Jungwoo and Mark, and pulled a Xiaojun photocard which, as per, he immediately stuck over the face of ISTJ Renjun and patted with horribly contained smugness (he then remarked to the camera that he barely pulled Xiaojun in any of his WayV albums, and so it was practically a miracle). And apart from the live, he was very online in general—once again breaking his rule of staying quiet if he was happy with it all. He posted on his Instagram, he was sending messages on Bubble at least once every week instead of monthly at best, he was going live with just about every member of the group (there was a lot of karaoke, a lot of giggling of stupid filters, and a lot of radio hours mish-mashed with fit checks mish-mashed with impromptu fashion shows). Overall—a very happy time for Kihyun, and everyone around him.

He’d never made any attempt to hide his love for Mark (like most of the group, really) but during GOLDEN AGE it felt like he was turning it up to eleven. During the fit checks and fashion shows on live, sometimes Kihyun would be decked out in full Polo Ralph Lauren—laughing all the while he showed it off, but wearing it all the same; no doubt because of a certain someone’s connection to it. He even bought a flat cap, and had great delight in showing it off to anyone who wanted to see it. Mark’s music taste also looked like it was rubbing off on him. Suddenly he was sharing Justin Bieber songs (mid 2010’s era Justin in particular—the PURPOSE album if you want to be extra specific), doing dance covers, almost to the point where it felt like he was trying out a new era of being a mini-Mark—which, when brought up to him on a fancall, set Kihyun off into uncontrollable laughter for so long his and the fan’s time nearly ran out because of it. It was there, quickly trying to cram all of his explanation in before he was made to hung up, that he told them that it was his penalty that came out of a bet with Chenle that Kihyun had evidently lost. What the bet was had yet to be determined, but all inquiries after that were met with a secretive smile and a finger to his lips. Mark did appreciate the fanboying, though, despite it not being entirely genuine—he posted a selfie on Bubble of him and Kihyun in their matching caps and argyle sweaters with an abundance of hearts coming afterwards.

you know it's kind of crazy how an encore is all it took for people to start turning on artists lol the similarities between le sserafim and jimins hate train is hard to overlook. they both can't seem to do anything without ridiculous hate.

Honestly I don't think it was about the encore . Kpop groups have horrible encore moments all the time. And Of course no one was going to let jimin get away with one bad vocal moment, he's jimin... but that's by the way.

I said earlier this year, but le sserafim was way too liked for something like this not to happen. They were like everyone's token girl group. Being used to shade their 4th gen counterparts. They were hailed as the best performers, the 4th gen girl group with the best discography. And the group played into this hype regularly, especially members like yunjin and also their team. Like you could tell they kept up with what kpop stans hyped up about them and made sure to act accordingly. But I guess they had to learn the hard way that you take the hype from kpop stans with a grain of salt. What it was that made yunjin the token member of lesserafim is the same thing that turned her into public enemy number one. Everyone saw her "being in the know" and her being a fluent English speaker as something cool but that was also the main reason why she got the worst of it with the boycott thing when multiple other idols were caught drinking Starbucks. But "yunjin is chronically online and speaks English so she should know better" while other idols were allowed to get away with it because they were seen as less likely to be aware of world issues.

Le sserafim were hyped so much that the love people had for them curdled into hatred and dislike rather than just indifference. It would be indifference if everyone just stopped talking or caring about them or that they stopped charting well and faded into obscurity but no, it's hate so they can't stop talking about them.

If the encore hadn't happened, something else would have been used as an excuse to turn on them eventually. That's just how kpop twt and twitter in general works. And honestly good for them. Because sometimes you'll never really move forward as an artist if you don't shed the token stans and followers. The stans have become wiser and better equipped to handle hate and criticism going forward. And their chart performance doesn't seem to have been affected anywhere else except south Korea, and honestly they are doing well there on apple music and Spotify but not the local platforms like melon and others and honestly I've given up on understanding the demographic of listeners on those platforms.

Just two years ago aespa was on the receiving end of something like this and now it's 2024 and they're now the token girl group of the year. Slowly and eventually no one's going to care about all the hate the group is getting now but at least they know not to think too much of it when they do eventually get back I'm everyone's good graces, because the moments of acceptance and hype is fickle when it comes to the kpop community and the public in general.

Since it happens a lot less frequently now, I have less cause to say it but one train of thought hits me every time an anti decides to start a misguided crusade all "hurricane in a box" style. The train of thought follows the memory of all the fans in the past who made it their most important mission to shame, bully and harass anyone who participated in fan spaces for themselves; not the creator. Who didn't follow a subset of rules they just made up.

What I think about is how content must have seemed to them, the deeper they got into it. Every time Ryan or Shane would do something particularly fond for each other, I'd see at least twenty comments spread out on the video, in the tag, or even in the Twitter mentions going "Ahh, the shippers are going to be SO ANNOYING about this".

And were we? I mean if I were an anti, and I was thinking that and my first thought is to hate-scroll through my blog. I remember posting on my own blog, reblogging from the shyan tag, posting in the shyan tag, cackling in group chats. There was a while there when some antis liked to screenshot things we said on our blogs or on servers (some who were lurking in group chats) declaiming how annoying and twisted and creepy we were. It didn't really get anything done. It annoyed a few people but we moved on because the content continued to be fun; the guys kept doing their thing and having fun doing it.

My point is that every time one of these righteous crusades bombs, I catch myself thinking about what it must be like for that anti. To watch something and to be thinking about how someone else is receiving it, how that someone else is someone I have an irascible hatred for is probably somehow going to have more fun with it than I ever could. Because I'm so busy receiving each moment, teeth clenched that it might vindicate someone having fun in their own spaces when I've explicitly said It's Wrong.

And it's like? Yeah, of course, I'm not having fun. Every time Ryan or Shane makes some dumb joke about how close they are or their body language shows fans just why these two started a company together, that would be intolerable to me because I'd be thinking so hard about how much a stranger online probably liked that more than they're "supposed to". Work husbands??? Why did they say that? Now the shippers are definitely enjoying the content and I'm uncomfortable because I gotta think about the implications of the phrase "Work husband" and between my irl responsibilities, have to craft some reasoning as to why homosocial male friendships are a bitter victim to the love spectrum.

I'd get so bored; the content wouldn't bring me any joy. So imagine how that person who decided to make a second blog to craft a 2017-era "breaking my silence" call-out post about Simone is going to experience content now. They won't be able to so much as make it through five minutes of a video without thinking of every single damn fan who told them their post was dumb and how much more fun y'all are going to have as the social media posts get all the more funnier; how Simone's fandom origins give her a good and easy insight into why we enjoy Watcher. Every time there's a promo and it becomes obvious that thanks to Simone's hard work editing clips she knows we'd like, the bloopers are a fans smorgasbord lol.

In the end, is it ever really a surprise why vocal antis leave fanspaces? They dive bomb into spaces to start a fight instead of making friends and end up with a bitter scar that ruins the content for them.

I’ve been saying that the cast isn’t icing him out for so long, and I’m glad to get confirmation of it. Honestly I think they did the best thing by not talking about it online or vocally defending him because it’d only drag them into the mess and keep the hate train going. The best way to make people calm down is to offer Noah in person support and friendship, and to just mention him in interviews normally, as if nothing happened. That way people can get used to hearing his name without controversy attached. It’s nice to see Caleb and Gaten saying that stuff though. It’s an FU to everyone saying they weren’t friends, and Caleb has always been supportive of Noah. It wasn’t going to stop now. Social media doesn’t tell the whole story

I definitely agree, it's always the best call (in the industry's eyes) to let time pass, so I always expected exactly what happened, to happen. people LOVE to assume they know what's going on because they project that celebs have the same mindset as them but that'll never be the case 😭 celebs are on a different planet. noah was always getting support in person and I'm just glad to get glimpses of proof of it til they start posting behind the scenes content where we see them all having fun!

yup them casually bringing him up in interviews is a great thing, and I enjoyed the fact there was no hesitation or awkwardness, they both just carried on as normal because nothing is wrong lmao. hoping to see more (not to be biased but I'd love another noah mention from finn just because he's always so kind) as we go because more time passing will allow for it :)
