Raise Your Voice by Lea Baker offers expert vocal coaching, helping students discover their free, authentic, well produced voice.
- What I Do:
I help people find their freely produced, efficient and authentic voice. I love to teach and empower students. Each singer is different, there is no 'one size fits all'. My sessions involve lots of physical and vocal explorations, positive reinforcement and lots of encouragement.
Using actors' voice training techniques, I help singers find freedom through embodying their voice and releasing unhelpful tension.
I believe ‘trying harder’ nearly always leads to vocal difficulties. When vocalists discover the power and range of natural, organic and instinctive sounds, they grow in confidence and ease - often discovering the voice they didn’t know they had!
I help those who rely on their speaking voice for their profession, such as teachers, public speakers and call centre workers (to name a few!), avoid vocal fatigue, become more engaging to their listeners and maintain a healthy voice.
- What I Offer:
Success in learning depends on finding the right Instructor; someone who knows the subject well and understands how you learn. My teaching style is practical, holistic, non-gimmicky, and based on science. Students learn how to sing or speak optimally. Clear specific language and examples are used, leading students on a self-discovery journey. Everyone has a voice. My job is to help you release its full potential.
Here are the four philosophies I follow:
* Trying harder will almost always lead to a deterioration in vocal improvement. It’s finding the ease in vocal use that is the key. Less is often more.
* The most freely produced and authentic singing or speaking comes from your natural, organic and instinctive voice. Often it's noticing and releasing unhelpful vocal habits & muscle tension to find that voice.
* I believe learning is about self-exploration and discovery, with guidance from your voice coach. Doing what the teacher asks to gain their approval isn’t learning.
* Training at NIDA opened up a whole new world. Using acting voice training helps singers to feel and sense their voice, rather than just hear it.
Why choose me?
* I help the student discover for themselves with guidance and targeted techniques.
* I take the time to understand the mindset of the student towards their voice and address this in my coaching.
* I teach holistically – I teach the whole person, not just their voice.
* Students get clear explanations of the ‘why’ when to comes to voice usage.
* My Teaching is underpinned by a good understanding of the science and physiology of the voice.
* Finding the unhelpful habits or traits of the student and helping them rewire these.
* Experiential learning is key, helping students to discover for themselves, no “pleasing the teacher”.
* Learning is layered. What each particular student needs at this particular time. I don’t clutter them up with lots of ‘nice to know’ stuff - it's not about how much I know, it's about what the student needs to be a better singer, speaker or performer.
* Voice lessons are either online or in person (Covid safe).

Shankar Mahadevan: The Versatile Maestro of Indian Music
Shankar Mahadevan is a name that resonates deeply in the world of Indian music. Known for his unparalleled versatility and passion, he has carved a unique niche for himself as a singer, composer, and educator. His ability to seamlessly transition between classical, Bollywood, and contemporary music genres has made him one of the most celebrated musicians of our time. Beyond his immense talent, Shankar is a symbol of dedication and innovation, continually pushing the boundaries of Indian music.
Early Life and Musical Roots:
Born on March 3, 1967, in Chembur, Mumbai, Shankar Mahadevan grew up in a Tamil-speaking family with a strong inclination towards the arts. From a young age, his parents recognized his prodigious talent and encouraged him to pursue music. His training in Carnatic music began early, under the guidance of Pandit Shrinivas Khale, where he mastered intricate ragas and honed his vocal techniques.
While excelling in music, Shankar also pursued a degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering. However, his passion for music remained unwavering. Despite a promising career in the tech industry, he chose to dedicate his life to music, a decision that would later redefine the Indian music landscape.
Career Milestones:
Shankar Mahadevan’s career took off in the 1990s with the release of his groundbreaking album Breathless. The title track, composed to sound like it was sung in a single breath, showcased his vocal mastery and became an instant sensation. The song not only brought him widespread recognition but also established him as a creative force in the music industry.
Shankar’s career reached new heights when he teamed up with Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa to form the iconic trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. Together, they redefined Bollywood music with their unique ability to blend Indian classical elements with Western styles like rock, jazz, and blues. The trio’s debut film, Dil Chahta Hai (2001), was a monumental success, with its fresh and contemporary soundtrack striking a chord with the youth. Hits like “Jaane Kyon” and “Tanhayee” remain timeless classics.
Over the years, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy delivered numerous chart-topping soundtracks, including Kal Ho Naa Ho, Rock On!!, Bunty Aur Babli, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and 2 States. Their music is characterized by its diversity, with each album offering a mix of soulful ballads, energetic anthems, and experimental compositions.
Beyond Bollywood:
While Shankar Mahadevan is best known for his work in Bollywood, his musical repertoire extends far beyond the silver screen. He has collaborated with renowned international artists like Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin, and Chaka Khan, showcasing his ability to transcend cultural and musical boundaries. As a member of the fusion band Shakti, Shankar explored the intersection of Indian classical music and jazz, creating a global impact.
In addition to his performances, Shankar has been a passionate advocate for music education. In 2011, he launched the Shankar Mahadevan Academy, an online platform dedicated to teaching Indian classical and contemporary music. The academy has made music education accessible to students across the globe, nurturing a new generation of musicians. Through interactive courses and workshops, Shankar has ensured that the rich heritage of Indian music is preserved and passed on.
Personal Life and Values:
Shankar Mahadevan is known for his humility and grounded personality. Despite his immense success, he remains deeply connected to his roots and continues to find joy in teaching and mentoring young talent. He attributes his achievements to the unwavering support of his family, particularly his wife, Sangeeta, and their two sons, Siddharth and Shivam, both of whom have shown an interest in music.
Musical Philosophy:
What sets Shankar Mahadevan apart is his ability to balance tradition with innovation. He believes that music should evolve while staying true to its roots. His compositions often reflect this philosophy, combining the technical precision of classical music with the emotional depth of contemporary styles. Whether it’s a soulful ghazal, a high-energy Bollywood number, or a fusion experiment, Shankar’s music resonates with audiences of all ages.
Awards and Recognition:
Over his illustrious career, Shankar Mahadevan has received numerous accolades. He has won four National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and Best Music Direction, along with several Filmfare Awards. His contributions to music have also earned him honorary doctorates and recognition from cultural institutions worldwide.
Legacy and Future:
Shankar Mahadevan’s impact on Indian music is profound. He has not only entertained millions but also inspired countless musicians to pursue their dreams. Through his academy, he continues to shape the future of Indian music, ensuring that it remains vibrant and relevant in an ever-changing world.
As Shankar looks to the future, his focus remains on innovation and collaboration. He is constantly exploring new genres and experimenting with different forms of expression. His recent ventures include scoring for web series and independent projects, reflecting his adaptability and willingness to embrace change.
Conclusion:
Shankar Mahadevan is more than just a musician; he is a cultural icon who has redefined what it means to be an artist in the modern era. His journey from a young boy in Mumbai to an internationally acclaimed musician is a testament to his talent, hard work, and vision. By bridging the gap between tradition and modernity, Shankar has created a legacy that will inspire generations to come.

How to Get Into the Music Industry as a Singer with No Experience
Breaking into the music industry as a singer can feel like an uphill battle, especially if you have no prior experience. However, countless successful singers started their journeys with nothing but passion and a dream. If you’re ready to take the first step into this exciting world, this guide will provide actionable tips to help you begin your singing career, even without experience.
1. Discover Your Unique Voice
The first step in becoming a singer is understanding your own voice. Every successful singer has a unique tone or style that sets them apart. Start by experimenting with different genres of music to find the one that suits your voice best. Whether it’s pop, rock, jazz, classical, or R&B, finding your niche will give you a solid foundation.
Practical Tips:
Record yourself singing different songs to analyze your strengths and areas for improvement.
Use online tools like vocal range calculators to understand your voice better.
Consider feedback from friends or mentors who can offer constructive criticism.
2. Develop Your Skills
Even natural talent requires honing. If you want to stand out in the competitive music industry, invest in developing your singing abilities. You don’t need formal experience, but consistent practice and learning are crucial.
How to Improve Your Skills:
Take Singing Lessons: Online platforms like YouTube, Udemy, and Coursera offer affordable vocal training courses.
Practice Regularly: Dedicate time daily to practice your scales, breathing exercises, and songs.
Join a Choir or Local Singing Group: This will not only improve your technical skills but also build your confidence performing in front of others.
3. Build Confidence Through Performances
Confidence is key for any singer, and the best way to build it is through regular performances. Start small, and don’t worry about perfection—every performance is a learning opportunity.
Where to Perform Without Experience:
Open mic nights at local cafes or bars.
Community events or talent shows.
Social media platforms like Instagram Live or Facebook Live.
4. Create a Portfolio
Even without professional experience, you can start building a portfolio that showcases your talent. A portfolio is essential when reaching out to producers, agents, or collaborators.
What to Include in Your Portfolio:
Recorded Demos: Choose 2-3 songs that highlight your vocal range and style. You can record these at home with basic equipment.
Photos: A professional headshot can help you make a strong first impression.
Biography: Write a short bio explaining your passion for music and what makes you unique.
5. Use Social Media to Your Advantage
Social media has leveled the playing field for aspiring singers. You don’t need a record label to gain exposure—platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram can help you reach a global audience.
Tips for Social Media Success:
Post Regularly: Share singing clips, covers, or original songs consistently.
Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments, interact with other musicians, and build a community.
Collaborate: Partner with other creators to expand your reach.
6. Network with Other Musicians
Networking can open doors to opportunities you never imagined. Connect with other musicians, producers, and industry professionals to build relationships that can help you advance your career.
How to Start Networking:
Attend local music events and introduce yourself to performers and organizers.
Join online communities for singers and musicians, such as forums or Facebook groups.
Reach out to local bands or singers for potential collaborations.
7. Learn Basic Music Theory
While not mandatory, understanding the basics of music theory can be a significant advantage. It will make you more versatile and credible when working with other musicians or producers.
Resources for Learning Music Theory:
Apps like Tenuto or Simply Piano.
Online tutorials on YouTube or websites like musictheory.net.
Books like Music Theory for Dummies.
8. Record and Share Your Music
In today’s digital world, you don’t need a professional studio to start recording your music. Basic recording equipment and software can help you create high-quality demos to share with your audience or potential collaborators.
Budget-Friendly Recording Setup:
A USB microphone or condenser mic.
Free or affordable recording software like Audacity or GarageBand.
Soundproofing materials for home recording, like foam panels or blankets.
9. Be Persistent and Resilient
Rejection is part of the journey in the music industry. Even the most successful singers faced numerous setbacks before making it big. Stay persistent and keep pushing forward, no matter how challenging it gets.
How to Stay Motivated:
Set small, achievable goals to celebrate your progress.
Surround yourself with supportive friends and mentors.
Focus on the joy of singing, rather than the pressure to succeed.
10. Consider Professional Guidance
Once you’ve built some confidence and a small following, consider seeking professional guidance. Managers, vocal coaches, or music consultants can help you refine your approach and connect with industry professionals.
Conclusion
Getting into the music industry as a singer with no experience might seem daunting, but it’s entirely possible with determination, hard work, and strategic planning. Start by discovering your unique voice, developing your skills, and taking advantage of platforms like social media to showcase your talent. Remember, every successful singer began somewhere—your journey starts now!

How to Choose the Right Singing Lessons in Singapore for Your Kid’s Voice
Singing lessons are essential for children who want to improve their vocal abilities, whether they are beginners or have some experience. These lessons provide structured guidance to enhance vocal range, pitch, and overall performance. Customized singing lessons, in particular, can accelerate progress by addressing each child’s unique vocal needs and goals. By focusing on specific areas for improvement, these lessons help develop a strong foundation and refine techniques suited to each child’s voice.
Selecting the right singing lessons in Singapore is essential for achieving the best results. With numerous options available, it’s important to find lessons that cater to your child’s specific voice type and musical aspirations. If you’re searching for the Best Singing School Singapore, this blog will guide you through the process of selecting the most suitable singing lessons Singapore, ensuring that you make an informed decision that aligns with your child’s vocal needs and helps them reach their full potential.
Understanding Your Vocal Needs
Identifying Their Current Skill Level
Choosing the right singing lessons Singapore starts with assessing your child’s current singing abilities. Are they a beginner just starting out, an intermediate singer looking to refine their technique, or an advanced vocalist aiming for professional performance? Understanding their skill level helps you find lessons tailored to their needs, ensuring that the instruction is appropriate for their level of expertise.
Determining Their Vocal Goals
Defining your child’s vocal goals is crucial in selecting the right singing lessons. Consider what they hope to achieve: are they interested in classical training, pop music, musical theater, or perhaps jazz? Their specific goals will guide you in choosing a tutor or school that specializes in the genre they wish to master. This targeted approach is essential for making significant progress and achieving specific milestones.
Importance of a Vocal Assessment
A professional vocal assessment can provide valuable insights into your child’s strengths and areas for improvement. This evaluation typically involves assessing their vocal range, pitch accuracy, tone quality, and overall technique. Such an assessment ensures that their lessons are personalized to address their unique needs, making practice sessions more effective and productive.
Types of Singing Lessons Available in Singapore
In-Person Lessons vs. Online Lessons
In Singapore, you have the option of choosing between in-person and online singing lessons. In-person lessons offer the advantage of direct interaction with the tutor, allowing for immediate feedback and a more hands-on approach. They also provide access to professional equipment and a dedicated space for practice. Conversely, online lessons offer greater flexibility, enabling your child to learn from the comfort of home. They can be particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules or those who prefer a wider range of tutor options, including international experts. Both formats have their unique benefits, and your choice will depend on your child’s learning style and convenience.
Group Lessons vs. Private Lessons
When considering singing lessons Singapore, you can opt for group or private sessions. Group lessons are a great way for children to learn in a collaborative environment. They provide opportunities for ensemble singing, peer feedback, and a sense of community. Additionally, group lessons are often more affordable than private lessons. On the other hand, private lessons offer personalized attention and a customized learning plan. They allow for focused instruction tailored to your child’s specific needs and goals, enabling faster progress. Deciding between group and private lessons depends on your budget, learning preferences, and the level of individual attention your child requires.
Specialized Lessons
Singapore offers a variety of specialized singing lessons to cater to different aspects of vocal training for children. These include:
Vocal Performance: Focuses on enhancing performance skills, stage presence, and expression.
Music Theory: Provides a solid foundation in the principles of music, which is essential for understanding and interpreting musical pieces.
Stage Presence: Helps develop confidence and charisma on stage, crucial for live performances and auditions.
Researching Potential Tutors and Schools
Finding reputable singing tutors in Singapore is crucial for ensuring quality instruction. Start by searching online for local vocal coaches and singing schools. Websites, social media platforms, and local forums often have listings and advertisements for singing tutors. Additionally, word-of-mouth recommendations from friends, family, or fellow musicians can be invaluable. Attending local music events or joining singing groups can also provide opportunities to meet experienced tutors.
Evaluating Tutor Qualifications and Experience
When evaluating potential singing tutors, consider their qualifications and experience. Look for tutors who have formal training in music or vocal performance, such as degrees from reputable institutions or certifications from recognized music organizations. Experience is equally important; a tutor with several years of teaching experience is likely to have refined their teaching methods. Check if the tutor has experience in the specific genre your child is interested in, whether it’s classical, pop, musical theater, or jazz.

From Talent to Tactics: Practical Steps to Enter the Music Industry as a Singer
Entering the music industry can be an intimidating goal, especially for those just starting. With so many talented singers competing for attention, it’s easy to wonder how to get into the music industry as a singer in today’s fast-paced, competitive environment. While talent is essential, the truth is that successful singers often combine their skills with a solid understanding of industry strategies, marketing, and networking. This article breaks down practical steps aspiring singers can take to gain a foothold in the music industry, from vocal training to networking and creating an unforgettable brand. By following these tactics, you’ll be on your way to building a career that resonates with fans and professionals alike.
1. Investing in Vocal Training and Technique
As a singer, your voice is your primary instrument, so investing in its development is crucial. Talent can take you far, but without consistent training, you may find it difficult to sustain a professional career. Vocal training is about more than hitting the right notes; it’s about building endurance, range, and control to deliver performances that captivate audiences.
Finding the Right Vocal Coach: Seek out a vocal coach who understands your goals, whether you’re interested in pop, jazz, rock, or another genre. A coach can help you develop techniques specific to your style.
Breath Control and Projection: Learning proper breathing techniques will enhance your vocal projection and prevent strain, especially during live performances.
Range Expansion Exercises: Routine exercises that focus on expanding your range allow you to explore more songs and styles, giving you greater versatility.
Practice Consistently: Dedicate time daily or weekly for vocal exercises, as consistency is key to improvement and maintaining vocal health.
2. Building Your Personal Brand as a Singer
In a saturated music industry, it’s essential to build a brand that makes you memorable and relatable. A personal brand isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about defining who you are as an artist, what you represent, and what kind of experience you want to offer fans.
Discovering Your Unique Style: Think about what makes you different. Are there certain themes you explore in your music, or is there a particular look or style that resonates with your personality?
Creating a Visual Identity: Consider elements such as your wardrobe, album art, and even the colors or graphics you use in videos and social media. These visuals create a cohesive image that reinforces your brand.
Connecting with Fans Through Storytelling: Every artist has a story. Share yours by including details about your background, struggles, or inspiration behind certain songs. This can create a deeper emotional connection with your audience.
3. Creating a Professional Music Portfolio
A music portfolio is essential for showcasing your talents and professionalism. This digital collection represents you as an artist and will likely be the first thing industry professionals see, so it’s crucial to make a strong impression.
Recording High-Quality Demos: Invest in good-quality recordings of your best songs. This doesn’t necessarily mean studio time—home recording equipment can produce high-quality demos if used well.
Developing a Diverse Repertoire: Include a range of songs that showcase your versatility. For example, if you have a strong belt, include a power ballad; if you have a softer tone, try an acoustic piece.
Compiling Performance Videos: Include live performances in your portfolio. These can highlight your stage presence and give potential collaborators a sense of what you’d be like in front of an audience.
Professional Headshots and Bios: High-quality photos and a compelling bio that tells your story are essential for your portfolio. These elements contribute to your image and make you memorable.
4. Establishing an Online Presence
In today’s music industry, a strong online presence is indispensable. Social media platforms provide a direct line to potential fans and industry insiders, making them one of the most valuable tools in your career-building arsenal.
Creating an Artist Website: Your website should serve as the central hub of your online presence, containing your bio, music, videos, and contact information. A well-designed website signals professionalism.
Utilizing Social Media Platforms: Start with popular platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. Share not only your music but also behind-the-scenes content, daily life, and interactions with fans.
Engaging with Followers: Social media is not a one-way street. Engage with your followers by responding to comments, participating in live sessions, and asking for feedback on new music or ideas.
Consistency in Posting: Maintaining a consistent posting schedule is crucial for keeping your audience engaged and growing. Aim for at least a few posts a week that vary between music, personal updates, and engagement content like polls or Q&A sessions.
5. Networking and Making Industry Connections
The music industry relies heavily on relationships. Networking allows you to meet other musicians, producers, managers, and people who can support your journey. The more people who know you and your work, the more opportunities you’ll have to advance.
Attending Music Events: Attend local events, open mics, and showcases. These events are perfect for meeting like-minded musicians and industry professionals.
Leveraging Online Networking: Platforms like LinkedIn and even Instagram can connect you with industry professionals. Join music-related groups on Facebook and LinkedIn to stay updated on industry news and opportunities.
Collaborating with Other Artists: Collaborations are an excellent way to expand your audience and experience. Collaborate with artists who complement your style and share a similar fanbase to cross-promote your work.
Seeking Mentorship: A mentor with experience in the music industry can provide invaluable guidance and help you avoid common pitfalls. Don’t hesitate to reach out to established artists or music professionals to seek advice.
6. Getting Your Music Out There: Streaming, Social Media, and Beyond
Once your music is polished and ready, the next step is distribution. With digital platforms, getting your music out into the world is easier than ever. By publishing music on these platforms, you can reach a global audience and attract industry professionals who are always on the lookout for emerging talent.

How to Become a Self-Taught Musician: A Beginner's Guide
Becoming a musician is a dream many people hold close, but it is a path that requires dedication, perseverance, and continuous growth. While some may have innate talent, turning that talent into a sustainable and successful career involves much more. Whether you’re just starting or looking to advance your skills, understanding the steps to become a musician can set you on the right path.
This guide will break down the essential steps, covering everything from mastering your instrument to finding opportunities in the music industry. With determination and the right guidance, you can transform your passion for music into a fulfilling career.
Step 1: Master Your Instrument
The first and most critical step toward becoming a musician is mastering your chosen instrument. Whether it’s your voice, the guitar, piano, or even a digital audio workstation (DAW) for production, you need to invest time in practice. This isn’t just about playing notes correctly but understanding the nuances of your instrument and how to create emotion through sound.
Formal Lessons vs. Self-Taught
For beginners, formal lessons can provide structured learning, enabling you to build strong foundational skills. However, many successful musicians are self-taught. The key is discipline. There are countless online resources, including video tutorials, music theory websites, and practice guides, that can help you develop.
Practice Daily
Consistent practice is the cornerstone of becoming a musician. Set aside dedicated time each day to work on your technique, improvisation, and songwriting. Remember, the goal is to progress, not just to play the same things you already know. Challenge yourself by learning new pieces or scales that push your abilities.
Step 2: Understand Music Theory
While many musicians rely solely on ear training, understanding music theory is an invaluable skill that can open doors for more complex composition and performance. Music theory will help you communicate with other musicians, read sheet music, and understand how different elements of music fit together.
Key Areas to Focus On:
Scales and Modes: Understanding major, minor, and modal scales gives you the foundation to create melodies and harmonies.
Chords and Progressions: Learning chord structures and how they progress will help you write songs and arrange music more effectively.
Rhythm and Timing: Whether you’re playing solo or with a band, understanding rhythm is key to maintaining the flow of a piece.
You don’t have to become a music theory expert overnight, but familiarizing yourself with these concepts will dramatically enhance your musical abilities.
Step 3: Develop a Unique Sound
One of the most challenging but essential steps in becoming a successful musician is developing your unique sound. This is what sets you apart from others in the industry. It involves exploring different genres, experimenting with your instrument, and combining various influences to create something original.
Find Your Influences
Every musician is inspired by those who came before them. Start by analyzing the artists you admire. What makes their music special? Is it their use of rhythm, melody, or perhaps their lyricism? By identifying these elements, you can draw inspiration and incorporate them into your own music while adding your personal flair.
Experiment with Styles
Don’t be afraid to experiment with multiple genres and styles. For instance, if you’re a guitarist, try playing jazz, blues, and classical pieces to broaden your range. If you’re a singer, explore different vocal techniques. Mixing genres can result in a unique sound that stands out.
Step 4: Build Your Repertoire
Once you’ve honed your skills and developed your sound, it’s time to build a repertoire. This means learning and memorizing a diverse set of songs that you can perform. If you’re aiming for live performances or studio sessions, having a strong repertoire will increase your credibility and make you more versatile.
Originals vs. Covers
While performing covers can help you gain an audience (especially at the start of your career), writing your own original songs is essential for establishing yourself as a serious musician. Your original work showcases your creativity and helps you connect with your audience on a deeper level.
Adaptability
Ensure that your repertoire includes various songs that fit different occasions. If you’re performing live, be prepared to adjust your setlist depending on the audience, whether it’s a small acoustic show or a large festival. Adaptability is key for musicians who want to perform consistently.
Step 5: Get Comfortable with Performing
Becoming a musician doesn’t just mean playing music; it also means performing in front of others. Stage presence is an important part of connecting with your audience and growing your fanbase.
Start Small
If you’re new to performing, start with smaller gigs, such as open mic nights, local festivals, or even online live streams. These low-pressure settings allow you to build confidence and get comfortable with being on stage. You’ll also get immediate feedback from your audience, which can help you improve.
Overcoming Stage Fright
Stage fright is a common challenge, especially for beginners. To overcome it, practice performing in front of friends or family members before hitting the stage. Visualize success and focus on the enjoyment of playing your music rather than the fear of making mistakes.
Step 6: Network and Promote Yourself
The music industry is as much about who you know as it is about your skills. Networking with other musicians, producers, venue managers, and industry professionals can open doors to new opportunities, whether it’s landing a gig, a collaboration, or a recording deal.
Online Presence
In today’s digital world, having a strong online presence is crucial for any musician. Use social media platforms to share your music, connect with fans, and promote your shows. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are great for reaching a wider audience. Don’t forget to create a professional website that showcases your portfolio, including your songs, videos, and upcoming events.
Collaborations
Working with other artists can help you grow your network and introduce you to new audiences. Collaborating can also enhance your creativity by pushing you outside of your musical comfort zone.
Conclusion
Becoming a musician is a journey that requires consistent effort, growth, and learning. By mastering your instrument, understanding music theory, developing a unique sound, and actively seeking performance opportunities, you can make significant strides toward building a successful music career. Remember, perseverance is key — success won’t happen overnight, but with dedication and a clear path forward, you can achieve your dream of becoming a musician.

Tips for Choosing the Right Acrodance Class for Your Child
Finding the perfect acrodance class for your child can be a thrilling yet challenging task. Acrodance blends the artistry of dance with the flexibility and strength of acrobatics, making it a fantastic choice for energetic and adventurous kids. Here are some tips to help you select the right acrodance class for your child:
1. Assess Your Child’s Interests and Goals
Before enrolling your child in an acrodance class, consider their interests and goals. If they enjoy combining dance with acrobatics, acrodance is an excellent fit. However, if they’re more inclined towards hip hop or classical dance, you might explore other options like hip hop classes or ballet classes for kids.
2. Look for Qualified Instructors
The quality of instruction can make a huge difference in your child’s experience and progress. Ensure that the class is taught by qualified instructors with experience in acrodance. You might also consider other classes to see if they have instructors who are skilled in different dance forms, such as jazz dance classes or classical vocals.
3. Evaluate Class Structure and Size
A well-structured class with a manageable size is essential for effective learning. Smaller class sizes often mean more personalized attention. Check if the acrodance classes have a structured curriculum that includes warm-ups, skill-building, and choreography.
4. Check Facilities and Safety Measures
Ensure that the studio provides a safe environment with proper equipment and facilities. This is especially important for acrodance, which involves physical movements that require safety precautions. If you are considering a ballet school in Singapore, make sure the facilities are up to standard.
5. Visit the Studio and Observe a Class
Before making a decision, visit the studio and observe a class if possible. This will give you a sense of the class dynamics, teaching style, and how the instructor interacts with the students.
6. Consider the Class Schedule and Location
Choose a class that fits well with your family’s schedule and is conveniently located. Whether it’s acrodance or another form of dance, a suitable schedule will ensure consistency and commitment. You can also explore dance classes in Singapore that fit your requirements.
7. Seek Recommendations and Read Reviews
Talk to other parents or read online reviews to get insights into different acrodance programs. Personal recommendations can be incredibly valuable in finding a class that’s well-regarded by others.
8. Inquire About Trial Classes
Many studios offer trial classes, which can be a great way to gauge if the class is a good fit for your child before committing long-term. This allows your child to experience the class and see if it aligns with their interests.
9. Evaluate Costs and Value
Consider the cost of the class and what it includes. Sometimes, higher costs may reflect better facilities or more experienced instructors. Ensure that you’re getting good value for the price you’re paying.
10. Check for Additional Opportunities
Find out if the studio offers additional opportunities such as performances or competitions. These can be great for boosting your child’s confidence and providing them with extra motivation.
By keeping these tips in mind, you can find an acrodance class that will not only meet your child’s needs but also nurture their passion for dance and acrobatics. If you’re looking for more options or have specific questions, you can always contact us for personalized advice.
For a broader range of dance classes, you might also explore options like ballet classes or hip hop classes. Each dance form has its unique benefits and can complement your child's acrodance training.

Various Artists - Brias & Ivy [1970]
Probably one of my favourite folk albums, published by a school. Normally most of the folk albums from a school I hear are in Japan but this is a American one. Which is amazing! it makes finding information about it way easier.
This album was made by Briarcliff High School which is based in New York City. It's a very rare collector item. Most copies usually come with a generic cover, A small amount of them actually do have a proper cover. There is scans of it online but there very low quality...
Brias & Ivy - Cover
Despite it being made in a school, the music is better than I thought. the producing of, Gordon Lee & Peter Glazer are very good. Gordon Lee actually has worked on other music and played in multiple bands. Which is surprising. You don't normally see producers who work on stuff like this credited much. is a American jazz pianist. Sadly Pater Glazer isn't credited anything other than this album on discogs.
Gordon Lee
Each track is from a different student in the school. There is some really good vocals in this album, really powerful and emotional stuff.
The combination of amateur innocence and skilful producing makes for a great album. It might be a corny opinion to have but i think the lack of skill doesn't really matter in music like this. To me it's all about the passion you feel from the artists. And i feel a lot of passion from this record. Peter Glaze and Gordon Lee's track, "To Get By" is a brilliant example of that. It probably has my favourite production on the album. The vocals sound emotional and personal. I also love the jazzy piano in this track, it has a really good solo that you hear halfway through the track, that I just love. I wonder if Gordon Lee recorded it. That would make sense since he is a pianist.
"I met you in the morning" By Annie Nininger Reminds me of the works of Karen Brook with her soft quiet vocals and even her guitar playing is similar to Karen Brooks playing. I do think Annie Nininger's playing is slightly more cleaner than Karen Brooks but the simplistic playing is still very similar.
Even though it's not my favourite track heck i didn't even enjoy a lot of the parts in it. The finally track is a massive 15 minute monolith. And i respect a lot of what it tries to do. The track has a prog rock sound too it. It starts off with a flute and a bass. Next you hear a chord organy synth not really sure what it is but you do tend to hear it a lot in 1970/1980s folk music. Later on you hear these muddy vocals not really sure what there saying but apparently it's from a book called, "The World of Christopher Robin" by A.A.Milne Specifically the poem in the book, "The Engineer" Its a very short poem. It's about a young child who doesn't care about the rain's because they have a train that they customized. The train works in weird ways it jerks because the break was made with a string type thing. The wheels also don't work because it was made with a break. Obviously the kid used the wrong parts... 4 minutes in and I started to actually really like it the intro felt a bit long and unnecessary but once it picks up it's pretty enjoyable. Not really sure how much of A. A Milne work they used but apparently a guy named, "Steve Worthy" also wrote some stuff for it.
High recommend checking this album out. The full thing is available on archive.org so you might as well give it a listen.

Mei Semones Announces Debut EP 'Kabutomushi'
Mei Semones, the 23-year-old Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and guitarist, announces her new EP and Bayonet Records debut, Kabutomushi, out April 5th, and shares a new single/video, “Inaka.” “Inaka” follows the previously released “Wakare No Kotoba,” a “lovely slice of indie pop with some serious guitar chops” (Brooklyn Vegan), which also will appear on her forthcoming EP. Kabutomushi sees Semones refine her sweetly evocative blend of jazz, bossa nova and math-y indie rock, chronicling infatuation, devotion, vulnerability, and saying goodbye to some of her closest relationships, complete with sweeping strings, virtuosic guitar-playing and heartfelt lyrics sung in both English and Japanese. Throughout the EP, Semones’ straightforward vocal delivery calls to mind that of the late bossa nova great Astrud Gilberto, while also having drawn comparisons to Japanese contemporaries Ichiko Aoba and Lamp. One of the more indie rock-leaning songs Semones has written, “Inaka” still has glimpses of jazz harmony throughout, with cinematic strings adding a romantic flair alongside Semones’ guitar lead. “I wrote this song shortly after moving to Brooklyn in the autumn of 2022, when I was feeling defeated and exhausted everyday,” Semones says. “I’ve grown to love the city, but at the time I was idealizing losing all ambition and moving to the countryside with my partner, hence the name of the song "Inaka" which means “countryside” in Japanese. Looking back at that time, I realize the city wasn’t the issue, I was just tired.” In the video, directed by Lucas O.M., Semones starts in New York City’s Lower East Side, before taking the train to her friend’s farm in Old Lyme, CT, visualizing the track’s theme of escaping the city and moving somewhere more pastoral.
WATCH THE VIDEO FOR “INAKA”
Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Semones began playing music at a young age, starting out on piano at age four before moving to electric guitar at age eleven. After playing jazz guitar in high school, she went on to study guitar performance with a jazz focus at Berklee College of Music. College is where she met her current bandmates, including string players Noah Leong and Claudius Agrippa, whose respective viola and violin add softness and multidimensionality to Mei’s intricate guitar work. After releasing a slew of singles and an EP in 2022, coinciding with her move to New York City, Mei and her band have since gone on to collaborate with post-bossa balladeer John Roseboro, and embarked on their first-ever tour with the melodic rock outfit Raavi. All of the songs that comprise Kabutomushi are written and sung in both English and Japanese, with Mei wanting to stay connected to her first language through her music. The EP title translates to “rhinoceros beetle” in English, named after the horned insect that she would spot and catch in the park when visiting her grandmother in Japan growing up. Keeping things stripped-down with the help of electronic subtleties and plucked strings, Mei’s voice intertwined with her guitar come off as a poignant lullaby of treasured memories long-gone, but not forgotten, encapsulating Semones’ sonic trademarks: ornately catchy, genre-fusing compositions serving as the backdrop to tender lyrics touching on the universalities of human emotion. Mei is embarking on a short solo tour with Bratty in the lead up to the release of Kabutomushi, with shows in New York, DC, Philadelphia, and Chicago, to name a few. Additionally, Mei has announced her record release show with full band on April 15th at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right.

Are Music and Theater Performance Courses Still Relevant?
The fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are currently in high demand in the job market. As a result, there is a common perception that pursuing careers in the arts is not a viable option. However, despite the dominance of STEM, the demand for media consumption has never been greater. Music and theater performance courses are educational programs that provide students with training and experience in music and theater performance.
These courses are typically offered at universities and colleges. They are designed to help students develop their skills as performers, understand the art form, and prepare for careers in the performing arts. While some parents prefer a more practical career guidance program for their children, developing a career in the performing arts offers many more opportunities than meets the eye.

Encouraging entrepreneurship and self-promotion
In an increasingly competitive industry, music and theater performance students must develop entrepreneurial skills and learn how to self-promote and market themselves.
Offering experiential learning opportunities
Hands-on learning opportunities, such as internships, apprenticeships, and performances, can provide students with valuable real-world experience and help them to develop the skills they need to succeed in the industry.
Providing opportunities for continued learning and professional development
Music and theater performance courses should offer continued learning and professional development opportunities, such as workshops, masterclasses, and networking events, to help students stay up-to-date with industry trends and connect with other professionals.
