And Alastor is like, really weirdly kind to her?? Em thinks that this is all her punishment for being a lesbian, Alastor tells her this is her redemption arc because now she gets to be herself, and help people without all of the insane and unhealthy weight of a police state ruining her sense of morality. Particularly, that survival isn't pretty, and its rarely good or moral to do it. Privileged people get to live, everyone else(black people) have to fight just to get by.

Vaggie overhears and is actually so fucking suprised by now empathetic and good of a speach that is, Alastor is immediately offended because fuck you I'm still evil fuck off. She wants to apologize for being petty(she had absolutely every right to be petty) but Al tells her to wait and let Em do hers first so her effort isn't wasted by forgiving her immediately after their fight. And then he coaches Em into a pretty good apology.

Problem: this is show lion au shit. And I haven't written any of that, so I'd have to explain everything in the notes I guess lmao. Like, in my au Vaggie was an angel. But she wasn't an exorcist, she was just a normal human. She eventually gave in to her Gay™ and kissed a girl, they got caught and the girl immediately accused Vaggie of assaulting her so Vag got punished while the other angel didn't (white women are always victims, while the horrible, aggressive brown lesbian was the aggressor. Classic bullshit racism and unfair judgment). Emily was the one who carried out this sentence. But again, police state, Em can't NOT punish Vaggie without drawing attention to herself, especially as a black woman. But Vaggie got tossed aside, and Em had to deal with the guilt and the guilt of what she did to everyone else too. This wouldn't be Atropa timeline wise, but same bones. Christmas With Joe Iconis: How the Songwriter's Annual Holiday Extravaganza Is Marking Its 14th Anniversary

Iconis and Family take the stage at 54 Below this weekend for their regular yuletide blowout.

For well over a decade, Tony-nominated songwriter Joe Iconis and his merry band of performers have spread yuletide cheer at 54 Below during his yearly Joe Iconis Christmas Extravaganza. As Iconis and Family gear up for this weekend’s 14th edition of the show (December 13), Iconis took the time to look back on the history of the spectacular and share how hard — but rewarding — it is to put together.

What inspired you to create the Joe Iconis Christmas Extravaganza, and how has it evolved in the 14 years since its inception? I’ve always had an unironic love of Christmas specials of stage and small screen. The Pee-Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special is among my favorite pieces of art ever, yuletide or not. As a child, I fantasized about having a Christmas special of my very own. In college I’d go to see Charles Busch’s Times Square Angel, performed annually at Theater for a New Audience, and imagine doing something similar if ever given the chance. The Extravaganza — then called the Spectacular, a name that was altered after a cease and desist from Radio City in 2015! — was first performed as a one-night concert at Ars Nova in 2008. It was basically just a typical Iconis & Family concert with some Christmas covers thrown in and one or two scripted moments. I think we had 10 people in the cast which, at the time, was the biggest show I had ever done. It’s grown every year. More songs, more characters, more extravaganza. The show is now a full-scripted musical pretending to be a concert. There are characters that only exist in the world of the Christmas show and, this year more than ever, songs written specifically for the show. Writing the script is basically writing a new full-length musical every year. Can you share some favorite moments or performances that have stuck with you? Annie Golden, as the Rock and Roll Christmas Angel, sings the penultimate song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” every year. I’ve known Annie as long as I’ve been working professionally in the theater, and I can measure my life in her performances of that song. It’s a moment that is so special to me, and every year I watch her sing it and feel like the luckiest man in the whole world. I also loved the first time we ever did drunk Mrs. Claus [Lorinda Lisitza] and depressed Santa [Jason SweetTooth Williams]. They were the first scripted characters I ever wrote for the show, and they really opened up my mind about what the Extravaganza had the potential to be.

The show features a mix of your signature style and holiday classics. How do you approach blending those two elements in a way that feels unique every year? I have a natural affinity for art that mixes highbrow and lowbrow sensibilities, so the show has real uptown/downtown vibe. There can be an absolutely filthy exchange between the Krampus (Lilly Tobin) and Cyril Von Miserthorpe (our villain, played by Will Roland) one minute, and then a full-blown google-eyed production number that wouldn’t be out of place in a theme park production of 42nd Street the next. I like the tension of smutty material that feels wholesome and vice versa. The Christmas show is also a really nice opportunity for me to write material that is in conversation with present-day America. I wouldn’t go so far as to call the Extravaganza political theater, but I think it has more to say than you might expect. As previously mentioned, I’m a massive Charles Busch fan and the sensibility of the show is partially inspired by Vampire Lesbians of Sodom or Psycho Beach Party. My biggest thing is that the show isn’t cynical and it’s never ironic. We’re never winking at the audience. Everything comes from a genuine love of the characters, holiday traditions, and of scrappy, DIY theater. I’d like to think that the Extravaganza is the best “show you put on in your backyard with your friends” of all time.

You work with a close-knit group of performers regularly. How does that camaraderie shape the vibe of the Extravaganza each year and the characters they all rotate in playing? We’re like a big rep company. Some people swap roles from year to year based on availability. Some people swap roles for the hell of it. With each edition it becomes harder and harder to come up with new characters and material. At a certain point I always think to myself, “Have I said everything I have to say about Christmas? Am I tapped out?” And then I am, inevitably, inspired by my brilliant family of collaborators. The performers, for sure, but also the creative team, led by director John Simpkins and producer Jennifer Tepper. The work they do on this show is incomprehensible. People don’t realize how gut-wrenchingly hard it is to make these shows, from the planning to the rehearsing to the performing. You have to be deeply insane to keep doing it because it gets more and more impossible every year. But there’s just something in me that can’t stop. All I ever wanna do is make art that I believe in with people I love. The Christmas Extravaganza provides me the most batshit opportunity to do just that. How could I say no to that? What can audiences expect from this year’s show at 54 Below, and are there any surprises or special guests we should be excited about? I can’t give away any secrets but I will say that we have a brand-new opening this year that I’m excited about. It’s our first new opener since 2009. As per usual, I’ve written a few lines that may get me sued, so people can be excited to either be scandalized or delighted by those. In general, the show is definitely the most “anything can happen” performance that I do all year. Because the show involves so many people (between onstage and backstage, I think we’ve got 60+ people working on the show?) the show is rehearsed piecemeal in incredibly well-planned chunks. I would not wish the scheduling of Christmas Extravaganza rehearsals on my worst enemy. This is all just to say that because of the nature of this beast is rehearsed, the only time we are ever able to run it with the full cast is during the performance. There are always surprises and, often, they are surprises that people talk about for years to come.

I’m weirdly torn about Lite’s character arc.

On one hand, feminine rage (yes please), she’s the only one who understands Hell can BE A THREAT (sure, Charlie and Pentious are nice and all, but there are other people in Hell who are probably not well intentioned), she’s rightfully pissed that her role as second in command was overlooked for some (admittedly sweet) guy who doesn’t even wanna be here, and she’s rightfully upset that her sisters and best friend/man she loved were murdered in a job that she was authorized to do by the supposed good guys. She shouldn’t be seen as the bad guy for being convinced by others that what she was doing was right, and is upset when she’s told all her work, her allies, and Adam being killed meant nothing.

On the other hand, she’s being depicted as the bad guy. I’m not saying she needs to be sympathetic, 100% likable, uwu babey. But her pain and issues are being brushed aside to make her appear like the stereotypical “crazy bitch” who will probably be the villain of the season, or at least A villain. Not the antagonist, the VILLAIN. Her grief and valid opposition is more than likely going to be villainized, when in reality, she may be cold and sadistic, but I don’t this Lute is ultimately a bad person. She spent her existence fighting for what she was told is right by a holy figure. Not some cultist or priest who says God talks to them, but THE ACTUAL HIGH SERAPH. She was convinced angels don’t make mistakes, to the point she never questioned that in all her cruelty, if she was right or wrong. She believed she was right. If this were on Earth, on could compare this to crusaders or people who force conversions or kill anyone who doesn’t agree with their beliefs. But I don’t think that can really apply, because Lite isn’t human, she lives in HEAVAN. Religious asshole humans aren’t comparable to ANGELS who are familiar with THE SPEAKER FOR GOD HIMSELF. So her genuine belief she is doing good is understandable, but will probably be what makes her villainized. Or maybe it will be the fact she’s in mourning? Who knows! Viv will never skimp on presenting a woman as a villain for the flimsiest of reasons.

And on the other other hand. Yes, it suck a huge part of her motivation is her connection to a MAN (the first man, no less) who is a douchebag. But idk if that’s that big of an issue. For all her being sad her boss/love interest/a dude died, there’s also her being angry that her position as leader was passed over for some guy as well. I’m not saying it evens out, but maybe it does? Not to mention that even though Adam was a dick, he was more than just a man/asshole/boss/probably misogynist, he was also her friend, someone she looked up to as a leader, and still was comfortable enough to hang out with when not on the job. He called he names, but that might’ve been out of familiarity rather than genuine malice or sexism. Then again, Viv never really let us learn Jack shit about Adam as a person, other than CHARLIE GOOD, ADAM BAD. So while it is kind of iffy from one perspective for Lute’s arc to be connected to Adam, I don’t think it’s an issue of gender, and more of the fact that she meant something to him.

Sorry for the long ask, but what’re your thoughts?

I agree with pretty much all of this. I think she is an extremely compelling character and I think her deeper character reasons for being a real villain are solid. I even think the song itself is genuinely good at showing that Lite isn't only raging about some guy. The actual meat of her character is really well balanced on paper, and the song does a decent job of depicting that ...

Until it gets to Adam.

The issue is the poor pacing of the writers and how we never got to see Lute and Adam as much. Lute is extremely formal in most of the scenes in the early part of Hazbin. Calling Adam "sir" doesn't give the impression of "best friends", so she does come off as oddly obsessed, especially with the rushed "crazy bitch" routine as you pointed out. We don't actually have a strong foundation for their relationship. Additionally, the revival of Adam as a figment of Lute's imagination as she falls into some form of psychosis is just rather silly. I understand it's to give Lute someone to talk to, but it makes Adam as a love interest is the most important characterization.

I do completely agree with your points on Lute's character. She has excellent motivation, and a clear arc that I also think is worth the effort. It just suffers from weak world building and lazy shortcuts.

You stepped beside him cautiously; studying him. The beautiful flower looked so tiny in his big palm, but his touch was so loving and gentle...

"Loki?" You addressed him; voice merely above a whisper. You didn't want to scare him.

No response. Your voice hadn't reached him.

You lifted a hand and slowly laid your palm on his forehead. The raven haired god flinched, before his eyes snapped up to meet yours. "Y-Y/N..."

"Apologies, my love. I didn’t mean to scare you..." Your expression shifted to worry. "What is wrong, my prince?"

Loki swallowed hard; his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat. "I-I... I saw these lillies and thought of my mother... How... How beautiful she'd find them and how proud she'd be of them." A tear rolled down his cheek. "I got lost in thoughts. My mind, once again led me to place full of wonderful imagination - and left me stranded..." He sighed; his head hanging low. "She's dead, Y/N. And that won't change."

You felt your heart aching at Loki's painful confession. You felt so sorry for him. It truly wasn't fair.

"Loki..." You lifted your free hand and cupped his cheek; slightly grazing your thumb over his soft skin. "I'm so sorry your mind plays this cruel game with you. It's hard when our own thoughts turn against us and suddenly aren't a friend anymore, but rather an enemy." He nodded, "It truly is... Normally, I can handle my grief well, but..." and sighed deeply. "It's just... I don't know... Seeing these flowers bloom for the first time since she died just did something to me. There are so many things I wanted to tell her, but couldn't... I miss her so much, Y/N."

His teary blue eyes met yours again; causing you to break as well. "I-I know, my love, I know... Come here." You enveloped him in a tight hug; giving him all the love and comfort he needed right now.
