hi friends! :D y'all voted and fought neck and neck for this SO- heres the first entry into our little cooking journey of J. R. R. Tolkeins fictional food for his fictional little guys he puts in fictional turmoils for our enjoyment and awe!

 Before we get started i wanna say i owe my heart to all the LotR fans who upkeep the wiki, debate the cannon, and create their own versions of the foods mentioned. Both because of my love for people who LOVE (passionate people)(passion about anything) and because my own knowledge of this series is a little dusty. I've never seen the movies but I did read the books growing up. I'll be learning and remembering things from a fairly newbie standpoint, so no worries if you yourself arent familiar with the series! (and if you are familiar, hopefully youll forgive me!)

We will be making Lembas ('waybread') today! If you've made your own version of this please feel free to share it, similarly if you have any ideas for what we make next!

SO, “what goes in to Lembas?” YOU MIGHT ASKWell so the funny thing is we kinda dont know. At least not entirely? The elves are dicks like that. But heres what we'll be using in ours-

Butter

Self-rising flour

Granulated Sugar

Raisins

A small dried fruit of your choosing

Almonds OR Pecans

EGG

Whole Milk

Heavy Cream

And if you would like for dipping-

Blackberry jam

To the extent i understand this is kinda like hardtack from the bri'ish military, but a fantastical version of it that actually tastes really good. Hardtack was a military provision with the texture of a brick that took a long time to spoil and could be easily carried with soldiers. So the texture we're going for is super dense, packed full with nuts and fruits (haha just lik-), but perhaps not that dense. We want something closer to a dog biscuit than actual tack.

I remembered something about corn being mentioned, thankfully the wiki clarified that no actually the british just referred to any grain as corn back in the day. Thank Fuck! Although I would like to try a version of this using masa in the future.

AND, “what does Lembas taste like?” YOU MIGHT ASK

Took a few tries but eventually got it perfectly chewy and dense

The raisins cook-in like little beads of flavortown sweetness

Cant speak for other fruits but for dried apple it softened up nicely, kinda matching the raisins in the end

Im a big pecan slut, pecans fuck on anything especially here. Crumble them on top after you coat the dough with the egg-mixture for some visual appeal

Somewhat flakey outside

The jam was my idea, it was nice but might be too sweet for some tastes

Would pair very well with a kiwi flavored drink

Or mead

I can see why this would a travelling provision. Its both sugary (a good thing when expending energy) and filling (also a good thing when youre travelling) while not being overwhelming with flavor (if youre prone to motion sickness. Horse sickness? Do get motion sickness on horses?)

Its like how if you're going hiking you want a good mix of sugars and salts, to balance your intake of water.

. If you wanna make it like the illustrations or the movie, use a cookie cutter for either triangles or squares . If you don't have a cookie cutter, an apple cutter also works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . try to keep the board you'll roll the dough out onto chilled before you use it, it seems better for the texture of the food though i dont entirely know why

So from beginning to end, it took about an hour and half for the first attempt. Down to about 40 minutes for the second attempt. These are a real simple recipe because its not like a croissant where the margin for error is nonexistent. Middle-earth be damned my boy can work a grill.

I'd recommend storing in a tubberware container, but if you're deadset on using leaves please rinse and dry them first, and wrap the bread in either wax paper or saran wrap underneath. We dont have mallorn leaves in real life (as far as we know) but most salad greens should work, or as Marie Porter says (linked in the reblogs!) a banana leaf.

I really enjoyed the process of making this recipe, itd be really easy to batch-bake these en masse, and the process of eating said recipe. Like all jokes aside, i think this would be a great substitute for trailmix. Its not going to get smushed and even if it breaks a bit it wont affect the taste. It wont keep you fed for a whole day but pair it with some pickles or a salty snack and yeah itll keep your motor running.

I give this recipe a solid 10/10 (with 1 being food that makes one physically sick and 10 being food that gives one a lust for life again.) Let me know if you think I got something wrong, or if you ran into issues with the recipe. We're off to a strong start, lads!

🐁 ORIGINAL RESIPPY TEXT BELOW 🐁

Ingredients:

6 TBSP butter, chilled

2 cups self-rising flour

1 TBSP granulated sugar

½ cup raisins

½ other dried fruit (strawberry slices, oranges, etc.), chopped

Handful of almonds or pecans, chopped

1 egg, well beaten

½ cup whole milk

4 TBSP heavy cream

Method:

Preheat your oven to 400 f.

Cut the butter into slivers/small pieces. With your hands, combine the butter into the flour in a mixing bowl until the mixture resembles coarse sand.

Chop your dried nuts and dried fruit until it feels right.

Mix in the sugar, raisins, nut, and dried fruit of your choosing

In a seperate bowl, beat the egg until combined, and then mix in the milk until combined. Keep a bit of this mixture to brush the tops of the bread.

Stir while adding the egg/milk mixture and the heavy cream into the flour. Mix just until combined into a soft dough.

Knead the dough until firm on a floured surface.

Roll into a half inch thickness and cut with a square or leaf shaped cookie cutter. (...or in my case, an apple corer).

Place on a lightly greased baking sheet, with about an inch of space between each piece. Brush the tops of the lembas with some of the mixture you saved earlier.

Bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until it turns a soft gold and the inside is chewy.

You like Vocaloid right? (I hope so cause you drew miku stuff and I’m gonna feel so dumb if you don’t…) For some reason I’m a little embarrassed to ask this and expose myself (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)⁄ What producers and music do you like? And who’s your favorite Vocaloid?

I like some of the ‘darker’ stuff like Nashimoto-P, Neru, and Masa (especially his old metal), but also stuff on the full metal side like Utsu-P, Soooo, and Eve-P! Of course I also like Deco*27, KZ, Mitchi-M and so many other things that it’s hard to list everything with doing an info dump and getting excited so pardon me.

Yes! I've loved vocaloid almost as long as I have metal, if not longer. (For a few years in middle school all I would draw was Rin lmao)

As for producers, I'm extremely picky because I tend to like half of a P's work and then not the rest. But as of right now it's gonna be Mothy, Utsu-P, PowaPowa, and MARETU. Just some that come to mind first! I will mention that even though I'm a fan of Utsu-P I'm very picky because a lot of the songs they produce are a metal style I'm not really a fan of. (Not that it's bad at all! It's just not my fav kind of metal)

As for my fav vocaloids? Obviously Miku will always be my #1 but besides her it would either be Kaito, Ruko (yes an UTAU I know), Galaco, VY2, or YOHIO. I'm hesitant to say Kaito because I have some absolute GRIPES with how people tune him to sing the most high pitched songs when that is NOT what he is meant for (not to mention I think some versions of Kaito sound fucking awful on those songs) BUT he was my favorite next to Miku ever since middle school so I have a long time of loving him 💙

It's funny you ask this because I just closed my laptop for bed as I was drawing EuroDead as Vocal Synthesizers 😆

Time for my unsolicited book review!

Tsurune Book 3 is one of the books of all time.

I'm not trying to be funny, that is my true opinion about this book.

I've said before that it feels like the author was forced to write this book in a hurry, and after finishing it, I can only say that those feelings have only grown stronger. I think the author was going for an abstract and spiritual feeling but it didn't really work out. It only made the story hard to follow, and the tendency for the novel to jump from topic to topic seemingly at random didn't help. It's probably super obvious in the author's head, but that doesn't matter if the reader can't follow their thinking. I really do question what the editors are doing because I'm not sure if they're giving the author proper feedback.

The novel also suffers from trying to do a lot but not doing any of it satisfactorily. It introduced a lot of new characters and plot points but never really did anything with them?? The new first-years faded out of the story after the beginning and idek what's going on with Kuon. As for the new school Haneina...the author just gave them one """quirky""" trait each and called it a day. It kinda happened with Tsujimine too but it was more subtle with them, and I think the central relationship of Nikaidou and Fuwa was compelling and well-written. Asahina and Eddie, on the other hand, are just really weird?? I honestly don't understand what their narrative role is supposed to be??

This might be a controversial opinion but I feel like the anime tells a more coherent, polished version of the story. I was rewatching it the other day and I was kind of blown away by how the visual quality improved between the seasons. S1 was definitely not bad looking but S2 is just *chef's kiss*. Idk if there's going be an S3 but it will be interesting to see how (or if) they adapt book 3

Anyways i don't want to say that book 3 is kinda pointless since it did give us some reveals (perhaps unnecessarily) but on the other hand...i feel like book 2 had a nice ending for the series as a whole as well? idk. if there is going to be a book 4, i hope it will be all about Kazemai hunting down Masa-san's bio dad

This happened when I was reading a certain foreign novel’s translated version. As I was reading through the point of view of a character whose first-person pronoun was “私” (watashi), I came across a surprising description. To my surprise, the character I thought was a woman suddenly started to shave their beard. Later, I learned that there was an unspoken rule that men used “watashi” written in kanji, and women used “watashi” written in katakana.

Minato’s personal pronoun is “ore” in hiragana. It encompasses the meaning of “undifferentiated,” someone of unknown gender who is neither male or female, although his physical body is that of a boy. Nanao’s pronoun is “ore” written in katakana, a person of unknown nationality who can’t be classified as either Japanese or foreign, a person who wavers between the two, a hybrid existence that crosses that line. Takigawa Masaki is also someone who hovers between “human” and “not human,” so his name is written as “Masa-san” (マサさん) in the text. Shuu is also a character who is in between.

I’m attracted to such “fluctuating” and “swaying” things. Things that can’t fixed or distinguished in form or state, as changeable as “water.” Kaleidoscopic freedom and loneliness are two sides of the same coin. People who fluctuate cannot stay in one place, and instability follows. Because they can’t be classified, they do not belong anywhere, nor can they be emphasized with. I wanted to somehow hold back those who can’t stop walking. I wrote this story because I wanted them by my side.

Changing the topic, I was on my way home from a domestic trip. After spending a relaxing time listening to the chirping of birds on an isolated island, I heard a large explosion sound when I got off at a certain station in Tokyo. The warning signal of a train entering the station continued to sound, and announcements reverberated from all over. I forgot to bring my earphones, so I was unable to plug my ears and ran all the way to the edge of the platform. Glowing neon lights reflected diffusely, and the words on billboards and other signs crowded in my field of vision like a herd of horses. I almost thought that I had time travelled back to wartime. We had become so accustomed to the flood of sound, light, and text that we don’t realize we’re on the verge of drowning.

Tsurune is the story of masters and disciples and bow friends with the theme of rebirth, and it began as the story of seven archers. The theme of Volume 3 is “Meigen, that is the sound of the dawn,” and I wrote about shari kenshou (seeing true nature through the shot).

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone involved in the making of this book: Koyama Kyugu-sama, who I’ve interviewed, T-sama of the KA Esuma Bunko Editorial Department, Kyoto Animation-sama who was in charge of illustrations, the proofreaders, the novel’s official website, the printing company, and the distributors. The letters I’ve received are my treasures, and I have displayed them in my tokonoma alcove. I would like to thank my beloved kyudo teachers and bow friends, my precious friends, and my supportive family.

Thinking about it all, Masa's and Suzie's relationship was kinda funny because Masa saw an absolutely tech-illetrate, go-to-reaction-is-anger, happily proclaiming she'd love nothing more than self-isolation, quitting her profitable job for one where she can avoid human people, way too overconfident expat, girl failure Suzie at their first meeting, and he went full: I can fix her! (romantically)

And even though he was afraid for his life, hunted down by the yakuza, at the risk of getting divorced, on his list of top priorities was to leave his wife a passive aggressive emotional support robot.

xiaolongbao literally top dumpling EVER anyone who says otherwise is literally wrong sorry!!! unless you are a vegetarian i guess in which case i respect your hustle 🫡 but surely there must be vegetarian xiaolongbao in this world, no?

ok this doesn't take #1 because whether or not it counts as a dumpling is up for debate but zongzi are sooo good and people do call them 'sticky rice dumplings' SO. i am counting it. it's more of a dumpling than an empanada or samosa is imo

there were these amazing pork & leek steamed dumplings at lili's which is a xi'anese restaurant in amherst massachusetts. now to be clear if you go to lili's you should get the biang biang noodles first and foremost BUT!! the pork and leek dumplings are a very good appetizer

ok i wikipedia'd 'list of dumplings' to make sure i didn't forget any and among other things they listed empanadas, samosa, pupusas, and......tamales. which. i realize tamales (especially oaxacan tamales which are the best kind) and zongzi are TECHNICALLY very similar except that tamales are made of masa and zongzi are made of sticky rice but calling a tamale a dumpling feels WRONG. but objectively i cannot disagree that if a zongzi can be on this list then so can a tamale. so oaxacan tamales take the #4 spot, even though i like them more than #3, because imo they do not have Dumpling Vibes

i refuse to concede that a samosa or empanada are dumplings however. those are Pastries. i am also skeptical of baozi being dumplings even though i concede that xiaolongbao is technically a type of bao. but baozi are much breadier it's different imo. also i prefer open bao buns to baozi which is definitely not a dumpling that's a sammich. however i do like dessert bao especially chocolate lava bao. so i will choose to allow baozi into the dumpling category and put chocolate lava bao at #5

"It's like an empanada, but on bread." DeepL translates this as "Es como una empanada, pero de pan." Not "en pan" or "encima de pan", or even "con pan". Any idea why this would be "de"? What other things follow this pattern? Thanks!

This actually took longer to answer than I thought because so much of what I was thinking is just based on instinct and what I've seen

I think it's a limitation of the translation

First, empanada is hard to translate properly because empanado/a means "breaded", or it refers to something that is covered with bread or has bread on all sides like a dumpling, a pot pie, etc. All can come out as empanado/a

Secondly, I personally would not write it that way because empanada de pan kind of sounds like either you're specifically talking about the dough or that the bread is a star here. My instinct is like that reads as if you're talking about pan as an ingredient... OR I could maybe see it as meaning "made with wheat flour" rather than corn masa

Because third, de (algo) is typically how you describe food where it's the main star... like helado de cereza means "cherry ice cream" like that's the main taste; and if you said helado con cereza(s) "ice cream with cherries" I would assume that they were either mixed after the ice cream was made or there's a cherry on top

A lot of things will list the main ingredient that way like sopa de tomate "tomato soup" rather than a "soup with tomato", or caldo de res "beef broth/soup"

If I said empanada de pollo I would think "okay it's an empanada and the main ingredient is chicken", rather than something like empanada de cebolla y queso "cheese and onion empanada", or una tortilla de jamón y queso "ham and cheese omelet"

(But this does sometimes depend; I've seen arepa con queso more than I've seen arepa de queso but I think both make sense? And some specific foods are more one specific phrase like arroz con leche is literally "rice with milk" but it's the standard expression for "rice pudding")

Me personally the way I'm reading it is that you're trying to say that it tastes like the filling of an empanada [el relleno is "filling"], but on bread

In which case I would say es como (el relleno de) una empanada sobre pan because sobre "on/on top of" is more generally how you talk about sandwiches on a menu

You can also then specify some people say like sobre pan de trigo "on wheat bread", so a menu might be like pavo y queso sobre pan de trigo "turkey and cheese on wheat bread" or un reuben sobre pan de centeno "a reuben on rye bread"

...

This may be my own personal understanding, but when it comes to food de + algo is like "that's the main flavor", con + algo makes it seem like something comes with it or it accompanies it... And I'm not sure I would use encima "on top of"

encima makes it seem like it was placed on top, rather than "it is on" the way like una cereza encima del postre "a cherry on top of the dessert" or con una cereza encima "with a cherry on top"... it feels more like I am actively pointing out its position, and with food specifically it reads as "this is a garnish" to me but that could just be me

Oh my god, now that I have a tumblr there’s finally a space for me to post Arukara brainrot. What a blessing.

This one actually ended up being pretty fucking great. I was a little skeptical of the fan-request setlist when I first saw it, but it honestly was kind of refreshing to watch a live without キャッチー, アブノーマル or 30cm in it – plus there truly are some deep cuts in here. 

It’s funny to see what the fans were thirstiest for – we get to hear fully half of 20秒前, and 3 out of the 4 tracks on おかわりください*, so clearly those have been underrepresented for a while lol.

*about goddamn time, by the way. かくれんぼ has been slowly becoming one of my favorites (the whole thing is so damn melancholy, and Shimo’s bass parts are even more gorgeous than usual), and this version of ミックスジュース here was top tier

There are some killer performances of a few tracks I’m surprised aren’t mainstays: マゾスティック檸檬爆弾 goes unreasonably hard, and the zero downtime transition from おしゃれ強盗 right into a particularly spirited キリギリス was insanely hype. We also get the most uptempo rendition of 秘密基地 I’ve ever heard in my life lol.

I know at this point that I shouldn’t be surprised at how angelic Takeshi and Shimo’s backing vocals are, even live, but those choruses on 偽り, what the hell, man?

Also, honestly, the JP fandom is goated for picking オーケストラは眠る as their number 1. Fully unexpected, but what a good fucking choice.

Taisuke kind of makes fun of the list for its absolute lack of cohesion – “You’re making us go genki song, ballad, genki song, ballad, genki song!” – and I can see how weird that must feel for a band that crafts the flow of their setlists as meticulously as Arukara does… but honestly, it still works. I guess when all your songs are that good, you physically cannot make a bad setlist.

Lastly, my buddy and I were absolutely losing our shit over Masa Takeda. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him show up as SSGH before; I think Taisuke might’ve been saying in the MC he helped them cover the KAGEKI tour…? Regardless, great musician – his tone was absolutely filthy, and drastically different to the crisp highs Yuuya and Take use when they’re filling in, lots of low end crunch and grimy chords.
