you know what i'm a coward and i'm changing malakawi's /a i o y/ to a simple /a e i o u/. i find it difficult to be satisfied with small consonant and vowel inventories, i need more variety
#maybe i will try a super minimal consonant or vowel inventory some day#but thats for another project. this one needs more meat on its bones#adding a new vowel is pretty annoying but im not so far along the word creation process that its an unsurmountable task#just gonna change some things around to give /e/ a presence#malakawi

i'm not sure if malakawi truly counts as polysynthetic, i don't think i can be the judge of that, but it is certainly far up on that side of the morphosyntactic alignment spectrum, and it basically kind of happened on accident. at first i just wanted polypersonal agreement, then i played around with noun incorporation, and suddenly i'm at the point where an 11 word english sentence can be expressed with only 4 words in malakawi
#well i lean into it now its just funny how it kinda just... happened#like whenever i start a conlang i first make a list of whatever features or phonemes or stuff i wanna include#and polysynthesis was not on that list lol#ive tried making a polysynthetic language before but i couldnt really wrap my head around it#i mean idk if im doing it right but something just clicked in my brain i think it just makes sense now#little sneak peek for my current translation project:#“once or twice it saw a weak glow in the darkness”#one-time two-time=or weak-glow-see-PST.PFV=3.I.SG.ERG=3.II.SG.ABS=3.III.SG.LOC darkness-III.SG.LOC#pa-defu sin-defu=axo nafe-summa-asa-ne=masa=je=sul kuttuxai-ssal#the roman numerals stand for the 3 noun classes#also i truly dont know if the pronominal stuff counts as clitics or affixes im not sure i entirely understand the difference#but i thiiiiiiiiiiiiink calling them clitics makes sense. idk tho#malakawi

my new conlang has a name, malakawi! mala means tongue or language, and kawi means... well. it'd be translated into english as "our", but it's a bit more complicated than that.
some nouns such as body parts and kinship terms are inherently possessed and have the possessive clitic affixed onto them. but there's no outright genitive, instead the locative gets used for alienable and the instrumental/comitative for inalienable possession. if you were to say "our fish", which is alienable, you'd say lyga kallos instead of *lyga kawis (the -s is a nominalizer which must be affixed onto the clitic so it can stand alone).
also, kawi is the first person plural - but besides the singular there's also a dual (2), a paucal (3-10) and a global plural (all). so kawi is the default, but there are also situations where the singular malakaxi, dual malakixi or paucal malakyxy would be more appropriate.
#hmmm ok this is where im at so far#im honestly not so sure if inherent possession makes sense here. like why wouldnt it just be mala kawis instead#but tbh i just really wanted this conlang to have inherent possession. so it does#if anybody has thoughts regarding this feel free to let me know!#malakawi#writing this post made me go thru a mini-crisis actually so uhhh now theres no more retroflexes#and possessors come after possessees and /y/ is written as <y> not <u> anymore and also the first name was kawimawa#which i kinda like more than malakawi but its alright i think theyre both good
