having percy create a hurricane in the son of neptune was an amazing choice. not only do we get to see percy return to himself in that scene, remembering all that's left to fight for. we have to keep in mind that this hurricane wasn't on accident like in the battle of manhattan. it didn't happen by chance because he was annoyed with his opponent. it was on purpose, which shows he's more in tune with himself than ever before, and more powerful than we last saw him. this was easily one of the top highlights of this book for me.

The fandom god discussion is interesting, but I feel it’s sometimes hindered by an unwillingness to separate gods from mortal society, or even a sort of over-eagerness to project our own reality onto them, which simply doesn’t work. I've seen the gods referred to as rulers or tyrants demanding worship (which I kinda understand because it’s something Ludinus says in-game, though it’s funny to see fandom corners confidently repeat the inaccurate talking points of the antagonist) but more interestingly I've also seen them referred to as a higher/the highest social class, as colonizers imposing themselves on mortals, the raven queen specifically as new money. Overall these comparisons tend to talk about the gods and their actions regarding Aeor in the past and predathos/the Vanguard in the present less as if they're about saving their own lives and more as if they want to preserve their powerful position.
The gods, by their very nature, are above mortals. They cannot be compared to any mortal ruling class because they didn’t choose or strive for that power and cannot feasibly get rid of it/step down/redistribute it (nor do they actually in any sense rule; killing the raven queen, unlike killing an actual queen, will not end the 'tyranny' of death), they simply have it by virtue of being gods. Saying that’s unfair or unequal and that the gods should be killed because of it is akin to saying it’s unfair a mountain is bigger than you and demanding it be levelled, except the gods, unlike mountains, are living, feeling beings who shouldn’t have to die because some people can’t stand the idea of not always being top dog. Thing is, the gods themselves ultimately understood this power imballance and that they can't help but hurt Exandria the way humans can't help but step on bugs, and thus removed themselves from the equation by creating the divine gate. Saying this isn’t enough and that they're clinging to power is just demanding they line themselves up to be killed.
#critical role#cr3#downfall#nella talks cr#ultimately all these 'ruling class' comparisons are simply flawed and don’t work when under the slightest bit of scrutiny#gods arent rulers or tyrants bc they don’t rule and can't be deposed#they are representantations and guardians of (mostly natural) concepts#and those concepts won’t go away bc you killed the gods. death and nature and the fucking sun will still remain#they aren’t colonizers of mortals (wtf lmao) who demand they be worshiped and mortals live according to their oppressive rule#again did you watch calamity? not even before the divine gate did the gods demand worship or even respect#they were never less respected than during the age of arcanum and still they were just chilling#(until someone released the betrayers and they had to step in to stop the ultimate destruction of exandria)#technically you could argue they were colonizers against the titans but even that feels like a stretch#the titans to me feel less like people and more like representations of the chaotic and deathly side of nature#being angry they were killed sounds like being angry someone stopped a hurricane just bc the hurricane was there first#I'm sorry but that hurricane would've flattened you. it wouldn’t appreciate your support bc it isn't a person#and 'a higher social class' fucking NEW MONEY? this is just blatant projection#I'm sorry but not everything more powerful than you is a stand in for oppression#sometimes it’s a narrative stand in for nature and i promise nature isn't oppressing you

California has gotten its first tropical storm watch ever. The last time a tropical storm hit California was in September of 1939 just after Hitler had started World War II. They didn't issue such watches in those days.
Major Hurricane Hilary in the Pacific is way stronger than low energy Hurricane Don in the Atlantic a few weeks ago; the latter spent only a few hours as a hurricane as it spun around aimlessly away from land.
Hilary will weaken from the current Category 4, but how much it will weaken is still not certain. If it maintains sustained winds of at least 74 MPH/119 KMH when it reaches California, then it will become California's first ever official hurricane.
Hurricane Hilary is expected to hit Southern California as a tropical storm, with a punch that could include flash flooding and significant amounts of rain, according to the National Hurricane Center.  A tropical storm watch for much of Southern California was issued Friday morning. The National Weather Service's San Diego outpost said this was the first time such an advisory had ever been issued for the region.
As somebody who's been through half a dozen tropical cyclones on the East Coast, I would advise our California friends that rain is a bigger hazard than wind – in most cases. People in areas which have the potential for flooding should particularly remain on alert.
The 1939 storm, called El Cordonazo, became the first and only tropical storm to make landfall in the state in the 20th century, according to the National Weather Service. NWS says the storm, which was at one point a hurricane, originated off the southern coast of Central America before moving north and eventually coming ashore at San Pedro, California.  Resulting floods from the storm killed at least 45 people across the Southern California region and caused $2 million in damage to structures and crops, the weather service reports. Another 48 people were also killed at sea.
There were far fewer people in California in 1939 when El Cordonazo caused deadly flooding.
Here is the current forecast for rainfall potential.

Keep up with the track of Hurricane Hilary here. Southern California should begin to feel the effects of Hilary on Sunday afternoon. Monitor local emergency information and follow advisories.
And if you're wondering why this is happening...
Our oceans are the warmest in recorded history. This is why it's so concerning

i have this headcanon that percy's personal hurricane functions like a skirt. it's impossible to notice when you're witnessing the hurricane from afar. but if you're watching it from above. each time he spins. it does a little twirl. and it lifts like a feather in the wind when he jumps off of buildings. this man is hurricane-skirt sea prince.

a while ago i thought about how tsubomi kind of got to have her own “i am the protagonist of my own life” moment when she chose to sit an wait for mob to meet her, knowing full well she could die, because she made a promise, but the more i think about it the more i realize the confession arc kind of gave EVERYONE a "protagonist of my own life” moment

it’s hard to explain the liminal feeling that is around hurricanes if you haven’t experienced it
Like it’s almost weirder if it’s not a bad one, because you don’t exactly get the feeling of impending doom quite so much, but it’s still there a little because you technically don’t know what’s gonna happen. But you like spend a day or two prepping and going to the store and buying things you would never usually buy and cleaning your house and tidying up your yard and charging your electronics and batteries and doing all this stuff and they you just sit around and wait several hours for it to happen and you can’t go anywhere, so you’re just watching this giant glob on the radar get closer and closer to you
And then like once the power goes out and it really starts it’s a whole other liminal space because you’re in the middle of it and so much is going on around you, but you’re going nothing. You have to just sit there and do nothing and if it’s not bad then you’re probably not really worried but you still can’t do anything so you’re just sitting in the dark waiting for several hours and the sky explodes outside but you’re fine and it’s just a weird feeling
And then it will be over and you’re still just sitting in the dark for probably at least another day. Maybe you can go outside and do stuff and check on people but in the end you’re just gonna be sitting in the dark together or alone. It’s just a weird time
