The boy has clearly been itching to get his flirt on for ages now. A cheeky little shoulder tease will no longer suffice, he practically tore that jacket off.

wip Thursday
tagged by the effervescent @perfectlysunny02, and in the same vein as them, don't I have a million WIPs? Yes, yes I do. But also, I mentioned this idea last week. And... well... oops? (And it's entirely their fault because of the violence they chose with THEIR teaser today.)
Alas, I give you unnecessary, momentary, legendary (working title)
-
Tommy wasn’t supposed to be here. That’s all he could think about; he wasn’t supposed to be here.
He’d had a full day of plans while Evan was on shift. He was supposed to stop by Harbor and pick up a package he’d had shipped there and forgot to bring home the night before. He was supposed to have lunch with Howie and Jee-Yun. He was supposed to swing by the 118 and swap keys with Evan because something was going on with the Rubicon’s engine. He was supposed to spend the afternoon figuring out if it was going to be an easy fix or not. Evan would be home before sunset.
He wasn’t supposed to be here.
Except, Evan was back at work after being down with a nasty virus for the past few days, and the only thing that had really been helping him feel better was the honey citrus tea from their favorite café. It wasn’t even a drink that his boyfriend cared for that much, but Tommy had introduced it to him the first time he’d gotten sick a few months into their relationship, and it had been a game changer for him. It wasn’t a cure by any means, but it definitely helped.
He wasn’t supposed to be here.
“Natalie?” He croaks out her name, leaning half up off of the tile floor, hand pressed into his abdomen next to his hip. He can’t see her behind the glass casing that contains the pastries, and she hasn’t said anything in a few minutes. The higher he tries to sit himself up, the more pain shoots down his side. “Nat!?”
It takes more than a few seconds, but eventually—too long—he hears the sound of what he assumes is broken glass shifting on the floor. A small whimper.
“T-Tommy?”
“Nat?” He calls back, turning his head towards the back of the counter again. “Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”
She doesn’t respond, but then he sees the familiar flurry of jello-red hair appear from behind the pastry case, and then she’s climbing over the counter, her combat boots crunching glass on the floor as she moves towards him. Tommy looks up at her, his paramedic skills immediately kicking in as he takes her in.
She’s got a cut on her forehead and her hands are bleeding—he assumes from all the broken glass. There’s a slash across her forearm where the knife got her, bleeding pretty decently. His eyes trail down to the side of her apron, the stain spreading across it and her jeans. She’s bleeding from somewhere on her leg. His gaze drifts to the counter and the streak of blood coming across it where she crawled over.
“N-Nat, we gotta call the cops,” he tells her warily.
“What if he comes back,” she asks anxiously, her voice shaking as tears come down her face. She sinks to the ground next to him, ignorant of the glass on the ground around him.
Tommy shakes his head at her, digging into his pocket with blood-coated fingers, fumbling his phone when his fingers come into contact with it. He pulls it out as he looks back up at her.
“You gave him everything, right,” he asks her. “Didn’t fight?”
“No,” she sobs, leaning over him. “God, Tommy, I’m so sorry.”
He shakes his head at her, reaching for one of the napkin holders knocked onto the floor nearby.
“I’m just glad you’re okay,” he tells her. He keeps flashing hot and cold, and he can feel himself getting clammy. He tries to focus his attention on his phone, dialing the number into it.
“Tommy, you’re bleeding,” she cries.
“I’m fi-…fine,” he stammers, slumping back against the floor. “We’re fine.”
“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?”
“5943 Ventura Boulevard,” he rattles off. “This is off-duty Rescue 1701 out of Harbor Station, I need to be transferred to Maddie Buckley.”
“Just a moment sir.” The line clicks off for all of ten seconds, and then clicks back on.
“9-1-1, this is Maddie Buckley speaking,” her voice comes back. There’s just the slightest hitch of anxiety in her voice, like she knows being routed to personally isn’t normal.
“Maddie,” he rasps, squeezing his eyes shut tightly, trying to get the tears out of them.
“Tommy,” she replies, her voice suddenly flooded with panic. “What’s going on? Is Evan- a-are you- is Howie-…”
“They’re fine,” he chokes out. “B-but, I need RA and police. S-Stabbing at the café.”
His head drops back against the floor, and he can feel his vision getting fuzzy. He looks over at Natalie. She looks even more panicked than she did before. His gaze drifts down to where his other hand is. Blood is completely coated over his fingers.
“N-Nat, I need you to use your apron to apply pressure,” he rasps.
“Stabbing?! Tommy where are you,” Maddie cries from the other end of the line. Tommy rattles the address off to her again.
“D-dont send Evan,” he rasps at her. “God, he can’t find me. You hear me, Maddie? Don’t send him. Do not let him see me like this.”
She hiccups a cry on the other end of the line, and there are hushed voices clearly trying to get her off the line, but she speaks clearly enough that Tommy hears when she growls ‘no’ back at whoever is trying to get her to hand the call off.
“You know I love him, right,” he continues. Natalie presses her apron into his side then and he can’t help the cry that falls out of his mouth. “F-fuck. M-Maddie?”
“I know,” she cries. “Stay with me, Tommy. Don’t hang up on me.”
He nods letting his head rest back against the floor.
“No, come on, Tommy,” Natalie cries, pressing harder into his wounds. “Come on. Stay awake.”
“Trying,” he murmurs, looking around the floor. “I-I, I want to marry him, you know,” he tells Maddie. “He just walked into my life like- like he was always supposed to be here. And I thought I’d lost out on my chance by taking too long to figure my shit out. Fuck, Nat. Yeah, that’s good, keep pushing down.”
“He talks about you being it for him all the time,” Maddie replies. He can tell she’s crying. “Keeps telling me that he thinks you’ll be a great dad.”
Tommy lets out a small laugh and then groans at the wave of pain that shoots across his abdomen and stomach.
“I wasn’t sure, before him,” he replies, letting his eyes slip shut. The phone starts to sag in his hand, but the cry of Natalie’s voice and sudden, sharp pressure on his side has his eyes shooting open again. “Fuck, okay. Okay.” He swallows hard, taking a breath. “B-but if anyone could convince me that we could do it together, it’s him.”
Maddie hiccups another sob. “I’ve watched him lose one relationship after another, think what he’s holding onto is the right one while knowing it isn’t. But I never said anything because I was just his sister, you know? And I know you said he walked into your life, but you spun into his with a literal hurricane and I’ve never seen him… I don’t even know, Tommy. This settled? Happy? Secure?”
“H-he deserves it,” Tommy rasps, his head lolling back and eyes getting heavier.
“Damn it, Tommy, come on,” Natalie cries. “Stay awake, please.”
“s’getting harder,” Tommy slurs. “Maddie, I love him. So much more than I’ve ever loved anyone else. Want him more, dream about him more, choose him more. My life begins and ends at Evan Buckley.” The tears swimming in his eyes finally slip down the side of his face, his vision tight now, and extremely hazy.
“Tommy, stay with me,” Maddie cries. Her voice seems farther away now. “The ambulance is so close. Please?”
“Tell him I love him more than anything else,” he replies, coughing out another groan. “That I choose him. Every day, all the time. I pick him.” He pauses for a moment, his eyes too heavy to open back up. “I love you, Evan.”

btw if your take on cyclic violence in arcane doesn’t address the fact that the system always requires the oppressed to be the bigger person to end said cycle rather than their oppressor….. it’s a bad take

I don't know what the common interpretation of this moment is, but I think that this:
Tumblr media
is Killua being pissed at Gon as well as at himself.
Like obviously he still loves Gon, and his main conflict in this moment is feeling like he couldn't do anything for Gon's sake. But this happens RIGHT after Gon pushes Killua away and says that this isn't important to Killua. And even though Killua knows that's not true, he still can't fight back without making it worse. He's doing so much for Gon!!! But Gon doesn't see it!!! And I can't imagine that Killua wouldn't feel a little angry about that, even if he'll continue to do everything for Gon's sake.
Instead he's taking it out on an enemy--which is the correct thing to do in this situation, since he has to keep fighting either way--with no time to slow down and think about what he's feeling. He's just feeling upset, pissed off, sad, and hopeless. And he can't let himself think about it, so right when he fights Youpi he shuts it down internally to focus on the fight!!! Because even if he is a little pissed at Gon, I don't think Killua thought through at all, and using Godspeed on Youpi was a way of handling it, because he'd been taught by his family to deal with emotions through violence first and foremost.
It ends up all exploding later, where he realizes what he's really feeling is a desire to help Gon when he feels like he can't do anything (except to die with him...) but in the moment his anger could be a bit toward Gon, with the rest of it directed at himself for being unable to play "his role" in their friendship (that of stopping Gon) and being ultimately unable to calm Gon down and make things okay, the way he feels like he has to do.

Dear God how I fucking hate when people dismiss s character's traits because "that's just a facade! you as the reader have to see underneath it!!" like yeah no fucking shit Sherlock, a well written character has more than one (1) defining trait but that doesn't mean their most prominent one or the one most recognized by fandom ISN'T there
yes this is about people thinking dick grayson isn't actually a ray of sunshine, that it's just a mask. he's much more than the happy one, of fucking course, all batfam members (when written well) are, but that doesn't mean that being happy and bright is not a crucial part of his personality. he brings light to people's lives, he's a beacon of hope, that's what Robin was born for, as a light to Batman's darkness. That's what Nightwing is. He can be serious, sure. He's smart, an amazing strategist, incredibly good at fighting, he can be manipulative and morally gray and sometimes an objectively bad person. But he's ALSO funny and quippy and bright and sunshine. BECAUSE HE'S WELL WRITTEN.
Like Jesus stop making him so sad and wrong all the time just because you want so bad to go against "fanon". It's not fanon if it's literally his core trait. It's not fanon if it's what the character was BORN AS. God.
#I'm not sure if this even makes sense#it's almost 6am I haven't slept and I just saw someone say he's a manipulative bitch and to stop writing him as a ray of sunshine#and now I'm mad#because this parson had this lukewarm takes with most of the batkids#like yeah I get a lot of damian's traits and back story are deeply rooted in racism#but like he did try to kill tim. and he killed a bunch of people when he first got to Gotham. that's a thing that happened.#and no matter how racist the reason behind that plot line might have been#it's something that happened and choosing to believe it didn't happen because it doesn't fit your preconceived ideas of how#a character should or should not be is just plain stupid#you can explore the character and change their personality and play with them in fanfic sure that's what we all do#but don't pretend that canon doesn't exist. you can choose to utilize it or not but acknowledge it even if it's just to spit in it's face#damian's not tame he's not more chill than his brothers he's not misunderstood#he's a child who had a horribly traumatic childhood and reacts with violence because that's all he knows#Jason's angry and he has every right to be and to say he isn't is to erase an incredibly important part of his character#you don't get to tell a victim how to be a good victim. Jason's a victim.#dc#batman#rambles#batfam#batfamily#dc universe#dc comics#batman and robin#dick grayson#Jason Todd#Damian Wayne#nightwing#red hood#oh look I made a post about dc that is NOT about Tim#wild huh

I think I would need to reread the first book to really commit to this opinion but imo some of the horror of book!claudia is that she really is a terribly inhuman monster. she was a vampire child, so she never learned to be human. she was a vampire child so she'll never grow up and fulfill that potential. companionship is a necessity for her because she can't look after herself and that makes her bitter and disdainful of people who want love for its own sake, especially in the context of Louis and Lestat, who damned her to her current state to fulfill their own emotional needs. it's a stark contrast to show Claudia, who yes, is a vicious mass murdering vampire and has fun with it, but is otherwise a lonely woman who craves companionship and understanding because she's a person. Her beef with Louis is still about his failure to prioritize her and his assorted bad idea relationship choices but the undertones are so different and I really feel like the tragedy is that he didn't put her first and not that he could never have made her happy no matter what he chose.
#tbh i think claudia in the book is perfectly capable of love she's just furious all the time#but there's definitely a particular monstrosity/eatrangement from humanity#which in terms of the other vamps. lol maybe she's just honest!#howevvver#i say again u would not catch her getting love bombed into a theatre cult#she is simply not vulnerable to that particular trap#at the same time i think it honestly was about book claudia. at least more than it's about show claudia. she engineered a situation where#louis had to choose and he did! she had the opportunity to make up with lestat basically whenever and she didn't because she was furious#and unwilling to put up with him.#valid! but imo a much less desperate situation than claudia in the show#who is also i think dealing with a much more serious betrayal#like tell me if i'm wrong but book claudia clocks that he won't give them up without a fight from the get go#in kind of a game recognizes less competent game kind of way#whereas show claudia really thought she could show up and ask louis to leave with her. and if he agreed that would be that#and i think the violence she receives and witnesses in return is what really ruptures their relationship for good. she was mad about the#diaries and the boyfriend and the general state of her existence but unlike book! claudia i genuinely don't think she'd have tried to hurt#him if he hadn't done that. whereas book claudia would gut him for funsies#maybe even a little affectionately if he didn't make her too mad first. however it's lestat he was always going to make her mad moot point#god i love show claudia but book claudia really is an absolutely singular character i should reread just for her#either way always thinking about Her#press says iwtv#interview with the vampire#the vampire claudia

portal ford that is so changed by one dimension he ends up trapped in that when stan finally opens the portal and goes in after him, he only sees something to hunt
portal ford that is shocked into hesitation by the first bit of care he’s been shown in decades. portal ford that finally sees his twin in place of prey
portal ford that doesn’t care what they were mad at each other about anymore because he just wants to feel loved, portal ford that follows stan around like an anxious cat, portal ford that drags deer and foxes and bass back to the shack as gifts, portal ford that doesn’t go into town much because it’s impossible to hide the changes in anatomy, portal ford that skitters more than anything, portal ford that doesn’t mind being subjected to mabel makeovers, portal ford that curbs his desire to bite bite gnash chomp bite when dipper shows him anomalies he’s found because he is not going to ruin this kid’s day by killing the neat things he brought him, portal ford that likes wendy because she always brings in fish her family caught for him, portal ford that’s confused by soos but he made him a neat gizmo once so he’s cool in ford’s book
portal ford that would maul without hesitation for all of them

It's always "character who will do anything to protect their loved one, even commit horrific acts of violence, learn kindness and mercy at the request of their loved one" and never "merciful character who hates violence and fighting makes an exception because they love someone so much they will disregard their own morals and values to commit horrific acts of violence if that's what it takes to keep their loved one safe"
#'he wouldn't do that because he canonically hates violence-' well maybe he SHOULD do that. as a treat.#i simply think that if we can write about characters becoming nicer we should also write about characters becoming meaner#more corruption arcs they're good for the soul#even better if these are simultaneous within the relationship#one of them learns mercy. kindness. other ways to settle conflict solely because their love hates violence and they don't wanna disappoint#the other learns violence. they don't like it normally. but they love their partner so much they'll do anything for them. anything.#one gets better the other gets worse#just once i want the kind sweet pacifist to go batshit. to see rage in their eyes as they promise to destroy whoever harmed their loved one#and make them feel every painful second of that destruction#and this isn't like them. they know it isn't like them. but their partner is more important#(and maybe this never would've happened if they didn't convince their partner to be more merciful in the first place)#i don't even need them to go full villain arc i'm fine with them still hating violence and choosing mercy most of the time#it's just for one person that they decide there are no limits to what they would do to keep them safe#threaten anyone else and you'll be met with mercy and compassion#but bring harm to That One Person? hellfire upon your head would be kinder#'is this about a specific ship-' PERHAPS..... BUT THAT'S IRRELEVANT AND WILL GO WITH ME TO THE GRAVE#doesn't matter anyway bc I'm right and I should say it#it applies to all ships that follow this dynamic hope this helps#oh look she speaks

Whatever you do, definitely don't think of the fact that Stoick's fate was completely at the mercy of Dragon Masters' (self-proclaimed or otherwise) several times in his life and the final time was fatal.
