I love when a show can say so much about a character without him being there. Eddie didn't appear in a single frame of 8x11 and yet he was everywhere, at least the legend of him was.

Buck's sketch of Eddie to anyone who can and will listen is huge, magnificent, and worthy of worship. To Maddie, he is the object of her brother's affections, who she hopes won't leave him out at sea with all these feelings by himself. To Ravi, he's shoes he'll never fill, but also, he's been around long enough to know that Eddie is just a guy, not this father-god that Buck remembers him as. To Tommy, he's a bunch of things. Tommy knows Eddie has his own irresistible magnetism that even he was weak to. But also, to Tommy, Eddie was a measuring stick of how far Buck's passion, devotion, time, trust, and love could go who only made it more obvious with each passing day that he'll never get there. That's fine, fun even, if you get fringe benefits from it - if Eddie could smooth over and gap fill and be the third for the faults in his relationship with Buck and make them better. Except Eddie and Buck have this whole other living, breathing mythological thing and to add insult to injury, Eddie wedged himself in between whatever Tommy and Buck were scrappily building. And when he didn't, Buck put him there. At some point does Tommy not ask not only if Eddie will always get the best of Buck, but also if Eddie is responsible for bringing it out in the first place?

So Ravi is allowed to be annoyed and Maddie is allowed to be worried and Tommy is allowed to bitter and Buck is allowed to longing and wistful and in denial. But at the end of 8x11, you wonder what Eddie's allowed to be and if the legend of Eddie could possibly travel as far as he did.

Kinda crazy that Tommy used the word competition. He's not implying Buck has feelings for Eddie, he's implying Eddie wants Buck. Buck completely missed the fact that that accusation along with the breakup speech means that he lowkey expected Eddie to eventually swoop in and take Buck. Especially with the implication that he thinks Eddie isn't as straight as he claims to be. Tommy never accused Buck of being in love with Eddie or being hopelessly pining. He more implied that Eddie might try to steal Buck and Buck would let him than anything. But it's fascinating the way that Buck's brain can't allow him to process the possibility of Eddie wanting him.

idk what it was about tmmy that made people take up the pen and write think pieces about how lonely and sad he is. like damn nobody went this hard for michael. nobody goes this hard for josh. nobody went this hard for natalia, who for all intents and purposes, was set up to be buck's endgame at some point. nobody cared about marisol or ana being lonely???? like who gives a fuck if he's lonely? they want him to be integrated into the 118 like he was a puppy they found on the side of the road they raised and cared for. "HE'S SO INTEGRAL TO THE 118 AS A WHOLE! TPTB MUST AND NEED TO TAKE THIS RANDOM ASS TUMBLR USERS POST AS CANON OF HIS SAD, PATHETIC UPBRINGING! oliver and tim pretending like this storyline is spontaneously happening episode by episode, like they had no idea what was happening before the episode and no way to know what’s happening after… they’re genuinely so hilarious to me 😭 as if a storyline like this isn’t planned to hell and back!!! they would have us believe buck and eddie are oliver’s and ryan’s alter egos, real people with real lives that we just happen to watch every thursday on abc at 8/7c, instead of two scripted characters with scripted lines and made up feelings and plotted outcomes

It's not so much that I'm 100% sure Buddie is happening and think it's delusional to think otherwise. But I do think it's a fucking unhinged take to act like Buddie is dead and buried and anyone who still sees it is kidding themselves. Be real. The denial is an absolutely CLASSIC romance trope. The ambiguity is there for a reason, and that reason might not be Buddie canon but.... it also might be.

And the thing is that I just do not think 911 hates it's audience enough to take mean spirited fourth wall breaking jabs at them. That's Supernatural's shtick, but I really think 911 is better than that. So if Buck is saying "As much as everyone wants me to be hopelessly pining for my straight best friend, it's just not like that" then there is a reason for that which makes sense IN UNIVERSE. Tommy is hardly "everyone" and he certainly doesn't want Buck to be pining for Eddie, so why does Buck feel like that's the case? It would be so strange for the show to raise this question and not answer it.
