Learn to Build a Fire, Without Matches or Lighter, for Cooking, Heat and Light:
Building a fire for staying warm, light, cooking and signaling is a skill everyone should know. Having the tools and knowledge will make fire-building easier and effective. Without electricity, a well-built fire will build morale and provide heat and light. Fire Starting Materials You Probably Have At Home Friction Fire by Rubbing Sticks Together
1 - Gather a fire bundle of dry grass or other material that will quickly catch fire.
2 - Gather different sizes of wood, from small twigs to larger logs, to make a wood pile where you want to build your fire.
3 - Find hard wood for your spindle and soft wood for your fire board.
4 - Find an arm-length stick of sturdy wood for your bow and strong cordage to wrap around the spindle.
5 - Find a piece of wood to be your handhold – this will protect your skin from the heat the spindle generates.
6 - Use a knife or rock to carve out a hole for the spindle to sit in on the fire board.
7 - Sit on one knee, and prop your wrist against your shin for maximum stability.
8 - Pull your bow back and forth to allow the spindle to further carve out a hole in the fire board.
9 - Carve a notch in the fire board to allow oxygen to mix with the wood dust created by the spindle.
10 - Once again begin pulling your bow back and forth until a significant amount of smoke emerges from the fire board.
11 - Move your embers from under the fire board to fine plant material.
12 - Blow on the bundle to increase oxygen flow to the embers. Continue until the bundle produces flames.
13 - Transfer your fire bundle to your fire wood pile, adding small twigs to larger wood as the fire progresses. Ferro, Flint and Magnesium: Ferrocerium (Ferro) is a synthetic pyrophoric alloy that produces hot sparks that can reach temperatures of 3,000 °C when rapidly oxidized by the process of striking the rod, thereby fragmenting it and exposing those fragments to the oxygen in the air which causes the sparks. When scraped with a metal "striker", a Flint and Ferro create sparks and can start fires when the sparks enter a tinder pile. It requires some practice to produce a spark but, once learned, they are reliable fire starters in nearly any weather condition. Magnesium is a volatile metal that ignites quickly with any spark and burns white hot (2200 °C, 4000 °F) to catch nearly anything on fire. In and of itself, it cannot burn without an ignitor (flint or ferro). Step 1: Place foil or steel wool on a flat surface. Surround the metal with two pieces of firewood.
Step 2: Place a densely-packed bundle of kindling on top of the metal.
Step 3: Wedge a cotton ball underneath the kindling. (Pro tip: Soaking the cotton ball in petroleum jelly will make it burn much longer.)
Step 4: Contact both ends of the battery (or protruding end of a 9V battery) against the metal until the metal begins to spark and catch the cotton ball on fire.

Why You Should Carry a Survival Knife During Hunting Trips
Carrying a survival knife on your hunting trips can make the difference between a smooth outing and an emergency. Here are some key reasons why a reliable survival knife should always be part of your gear:
1. Versatility in Tasks
A survival knife is more than just a tool for cutting. It can assist in multiple tasks such as processing game, cutting ropes, sharpening sticks, and even creating kindling for fire. This multifunctional tool is vital for field dressing and other activities in the wilderness where specialized tools might not be available.
2. Self-Defense and Safety
Wild animals and unforeseen dangers can present a threat during any hunting trip. A survival knife provides an additional layer of protection, allowing you to defend yourself if necessary. It also aids in other safety tasks, like clearing paths or setting traps, and can be essential for emergency situations such as first aid.
3. Durability and Reliability
Survival knives are typically built to endure extreme conditions. Unlike standard hunting knives, they are crafted from durable materials such as high-carbon steel or stainless steel. Their strong, full-tang design ensures reliability even in the toughest conditions. Knives available at Vumaker exemplify this type of craftsmanship.
4. Shelter and Firebuilding
A survival knife can be instrumental in building a shelter by cutting branches and stripping bark. It’s also critical for fire-starting tasks, such as splitting wood or striking a fire starter. In survival situations, fire is crucial for warmth, cooking, and protection.
5. Ease of Carry and Use
Modern survival knives, including those found at Vumaker, are designed for ease of carry and use. They are compact and come with sheaths that allow for easy access, ensuring that they are always ready when needed.
Conclusion
A survival knife is not just a backup tool—it’s a core piece of equipment that every hunter should carry. Its versatility, durability, and practical utility make it indispensable during any hunting trip. Explore high-quality survival knives at Vumaker to ensure you’re well-prepared for your next adventure.

Ket Makes a Fire (1/?)
@tldsurvival I filmed this last weekend. Used the ‘NOPE’ to hide my face when I leaned in. Sorry the whole thing is so short! I was actually having a bit of trouble getting the rest of the sticks to catch for longer than a few seconds XD it was a really humid day.

The Test of Fire (Poem)
Sometimes when the automaticity of life Laxes me to the point of personal disgust I head into the woods to sharpen my senses And test my skill once again It is time to see if I am still worthy of being alongside the animals Or if I have lost my primitive instinct, succumbing to a life inside
Tinder
Alas I choose a site protected from the wind that bites at my neck The sun setting to the west tells me to hasten my pace or face the consequences of night My breath, seen also by the chickadee perched curiously above me, cascades in front of my face A reminder that the cold waits for no one It starts to snow as I collect the deadfall that will sustain my purpose
Kindling
I remove my gloves to arrange the precious bundle. I am grateful for its sacrifice. I curse my ill-equipped, furless anatomy that exposes me to the elements The hawk in the distance witnesses my frustration. Why doesn’t she help? She understands that I must do this alone She knows there is sacredness in struggle
Match
There is no one here to watch me succeed or fail; only I will know the outcome This is the most spiritual of pressure The aloneness is real but still I do not feel it The deer across the frozen slough silently urges me to continue and he gives me strength My hope grows now and I am focused I strike the match; a fleeting moment of truth
Victory
A small flame at first It grows higher as my lungs contract with as much force as I can muster My spirit lifts as I add wood, giving life to the fire I am also alive. Tonight I am an animal. I wallow in the heat of my success only a short while The beast needs more fuel to sustain its appetite As I go forth to collect more wood against the snowflakes I realize that I too am fire This brief triumph will never be enough
                                                                                            -S. Adams (2019)

Building a fire in a hole in the ground (Dakota Fire Pit) is useful for windy conditions, reduces detection (if stealth is desired) and can be closer to heat a shelter. It's also easy to put the fire out, filling the hole with dirt, when ready.
Dig a hole on the windy side of a tree (to disperse smoke).
Dig it one foot deep with a diameter slightly smaller than your cooking pot/pan.
Make the bottom of the hole (fire area) larger than the top.
Surround the top of the hole with rocks to support the cooking pot/pan.
Dig a smaller second hole (open to the wind) about 10 inches from the first hole that tunnels at an angle so it connects with the bottom of the first hole.
Use small twiggs and pine cones as fuel for the fire.

STEM is geniunely great and we need those programs for young girls. But girls should also get more rigourous and challenging outdoors programs bc 1)they deserve it and 2) otherwise they'll be poached by the BSA. like come on y'all... teach girls leather working and advanced firebuilding and gunsmithing.
like I was a girl scout for 13 years (got my gold in 2018) but all of the "badass" stuff I had to learn from my time working for the BSA and doing Venture Crew. its disappointing the higher ups haven't caught onto to the fact what young girls want hasn't really changed over 100+ years
I super don't want this to blow up and be a GS bashing session (or a BSA vs GS session), but that being said a lot of people agree with you and have brought this up to GSUSA. Again and again. When we did the Northface badges (my council was a pilot council) there were a lot of issues, but those are about as close to high adventure as it gets. My boss has pestered, we need horseback riding for all ages, we need archery for most ages, etc. I do agree with you, as a former GS who came up in the old program, we need not less STEM but more everything else.
However, to hopefully help with an explanation (and don't worry, a lot of this pisses me off), I am going to give you the dirt on GSUSA and their badges and patches and decisions:
GSUSA will not make a badge or patch without a sponsor anymore. Full stop. They "need" the money. When asked if they would make the Automotive Engineering badges for CSA, a GSUSA staffer said, and I quote, if you can find us a sponsor. Unfortunately, they also want a fair chunk of money, so it's not going to be some little nonprofit donating 5k for a new set of badges. I truly wish it were different, but it is not.
Last I heard, also, their intent is to update and flesh out current badge series, not make new stuff. That is why they updated the financial stuff, it was pretty out of date. Also they got rid of that weird Brownie Elf doll in Money Manager, yay. They did redo the petals from Life Skills and I will put my stamp of approval on the new curriculum, and it was very needed. No more "flower friends." I think they're planning a DEI audit of everything too.
Also, on the note of GSUSA, please expect A Lot less to get done, because they fired 50 people this fall. Yeah. There are 4 "levels" of GSUSA staff: specialists (my level, doing the dirty work and failing miserably), managers (still dirty work, more prestigious), directors (higher level stuff), and C-suite (CEO, COO, etc). They fired all the manager level staff. So stuff is just... not getting done. And I wouldn't expect much of anything out of them tbh.
On the outdoor front, my council created a very robust, five level patch program. You earn something and it gets pretty advanced in areas such as navigation, fire building, and knots. It's not the same as a badge, but it's a pretty good start. I recently made it into a Badge in a Box (badge is loosely used). If you message me, I will give you links. Any GS in the country can do it, you'd just need to order the patches from us if you wanted them. If you want to talk more about this, please message me, and I'm happy to get into more details about GSUSA and their stupidity.
GSUSA: In honor of National STEM Day this month, Girl Scouts of the USA is expanding its STEM Career Exploration badges.
Me: But, that was in August? It’s November? You can’t keep saying that.

🔥 Fire Building @ MacLeish Field Station 🔥 We went to MacLeish this week to practice our fire making abilities. Unfortunately it was very damp, so we had a hard time getting started. However, the field station is gorgeous, so I was just happy to wander around. There's an amazing field house at MacLeish that is actually a living building, meaning it is no-impact. There's also a great campsite and fire area. It's one of the coolest parts of Smith in my opinion. Lots of people are able to do research, workshops, and other activities up at MacLeish, which is a wonderful asset for us. I did my writing workshop there in January, a low ropes course last semester, and I'll be spending the night up there in a week or two with my Primitive Outdoor Skills class. Anna

What gives you comfort when you’re most in need? Solitude and stillness is what I needed today; And my bedroom. Tie dyed curtains under lace, this was my comfort zone. I will never stop trying to make sense of the senseless but last night as I sat next to a freshly built ramp listening to poetry around a fire, I remembered we are humans and we will make fires and build things and tell stories and gather together. If for nothing more this is what we are here for. This is what we have always done and this is what we will always do. This is the basis of our common thread which binds us all. Gather - Burn - Build - Talk I love you. ✌🏽 ❤️‍🩹 🌠 . . . #itsoknottobeok #comfortzone #seekingcomfort #searching #lookingforanswers #basicneeds #storytellers #firebuilders #makers #gatherers #gather #universaltruth #connection #tiedyeandlace #laceandtyedye #humanity #flxfibers #textiles #textures #thetiethatbinds #commonthread #firestarter #holidayblues #christmasblues #letgo https://www.instagram.com/p/CXzN_ybOhY0/?utm_medium=tumblr
