Okay, so I know this one is probably based on cumin/spice traders, but it reminded me of a fun fact something that was on a final exam when I was in 10th grade.

A lot of people's last names come from the fact that they had an ancestor left as a foundling, and had to be named by the local magistrate.

Sometimes that was the last name of whoever found them, or the current saint's day (more likely to be used for the first name, though), the name of an object the kid was left with, the location they were found, or even just the whim of the magistrate. There's records of people being named "unknown" and variations thereof.

In particularly foundling prone areas, it could even be whatever name was pre-filled out one the list, which was usually a way to line up a nice variety of mundane, socially acceptable last names no one would question. Usually. Occasionally, people used it to get... Creative. Or political.

Like one Louvain magistrate from 1789 who decided to get inspiration for 39 kids' last names from a protest pamphlet:

"Enfin alles gaet om zeep. En de maegere ratten worden vet met gestolen goed, zoodat stelen, herboots rooven, plunderen geene zonde en is. Helaes, onder wat tirannen leeven wij: galges, pruijsman, recruet, canon. Komt ons helpen uijt de slavernije van de booze tyran."

Loosely translated: "In the end, everything is going to pot. And the starving rats are fattened with stolen goods, making it so stealing, brazen robbery and looting is no longer sin. Alas, under what kind of tyrants do we live: gallows, [Prussian?], recruit, cannon. Come deliver us from the evil tyrant's slavery."

In defense of this magistrate: the kids were meant to be renamed if and when they were adopted, and this was a time and late 18th century Europe was not the greatest moment to be born and live to see 5 years old. Those are not names picked by an optimistic man. Still, if the kid lived and wasn't adopted or shoved into a religious institution, you'd end up with a census listing for Johnny Evil Tyrant, born 1789.

Which is to say: a fair amount of people named Cumming are descended from spice traders. But it's also entirely possible that a handful people are named that because someone in Ye Olden Days was thinking of, or doing, what OP is inferring.

Anyways I'm so fucking relieved that Porter was evil actually. Bc I was actually so damn mad that he got to be right about Gorgug. Like there's just something insidious about the idea of a teacher who comes in and says they know more about what your path should be. And they push and push and keep telling you that they're only hurting you bc they know you can do more. And it doesn't matter if you feel that way or even if you want to do more, bc they've decided they know the right path for you. And it's only ever your life and your sanity on the line; they're risking nothing. So I was so fucking mad when Gorgug succeeded at the barbificer thing and Porter got to be all 'see? I was only pushing you bc I believed in you' bc you better believe if Gorgug hadn't managed it, the blame would've been on him not Porter....

Anyways with the hindsight that Porter is basically the big bad, it suddenly becomes a question of if Porter even wanted Gorgug to succeed. Like they had to know the Bad Kids were the biggest threat to their plan, so like. Undermining them in whatever way was possible would be smart. And so instead of Porter getting to be Right about how to treat Gorgug, it's like. Was he sabotaging him? Was he trying to make Gorgug fail? And it becomes more that Gorgug succeeded in spite of Porter's bullshit.

hello and life updates

hiii friends!

i am (kind of) back after my latest unplanned hiatus ahaha, nothing particularly bad happened in my personal life to cause me to leave or anything like that but i did decide that i needed to prioritize my irl friends and community for awhile because i had a big life change coming up, which was moving to a new town to start my masters program! i have since moved and started said program, which has been going well but definitely takes up like all of my time ;_;

on the future of my story:

honestly while i was away i would revisit my story from time to time in the hopes i would find motivation to come back and keep working on it, but i feel like instead i just kept finding flaws and plot holes that discouraged me more :( i still cherish frankie and co dearly and have saved all of their files on the off chance i decide to pick things back up! but for now i'm officially putting the story on hiatus. I'M SORRY i know i left it on such a cliffhanger :((

on the future of this blog:

i have actually decided to fully restart on a new blog! there's literally nothing wrong with this one i just kind of want a clean slate. if you're interested in seeing what i'm up to going forward, you can follow me at @saccharinesim (i'd love to have you!) i might even already have a story idea that i'm fleshing out ahaha. given how busy i am these days i can't promise any amount of consistency, but i've missed this community and everyone in it a whole lot and the fact that i cannot seem to stay away just goes to show how valuable it is :')

it's ok to drop out of school

ok maybe not high school, please unless you are physically or mentally unable to complete it, then stay in school but if you're sat there thinking "i don't think this degree is right for me" or "my mental health has hit rock bottom and i can't keep doing this", then go for it

there is no shame in realising what you are doing isn't right for you or that in order to survive you have to stop.

i should know

i studied bioveterinary for 2 years. my 1st year was great, finishing with a grade of 60% (which is a pretty good grade in the UK). my 2nd year however was filled with mental health problems, horrific living conditions, bullying, borderline emotional abuse, and some awful life events. after all of that, i failed one of my final exams, which was a surprise as i was sure i'd failed multiple. when i got my grades and saw that, i realised i wasn't only upset because i'd failed something, but because i had to force myself to resit as i felt like i had to finish that degree, not because i wanted to

after talking to my parents (who were luckily very supportive of me) the decision was made for me to drop out

now i chose to go straight back to uni. a lot of my problems were with the people at my old university and so i applied and was quickly accepted onto an integrated masters in biochem, the degree i actually wanted to do. since then i have finished my first year, my mental health is improving slightly, the life events are getting easier, i'm not surrounded by incredibly toxic people. and despite this university having higher standings, my final grade worked out around 69%, almost a full grade above previous attempt

dropping out of my first degree was one of the best decisions i have ever made

so if anybody tries to tell you dropping out is weak and means you couldn't handle it, they are wrong

even if you just don't want to do it and you want to go work in a cafe, as long as it isn't a spur of the moment decision, and you think it through, if it's what feels right to you, then do it

your friend engagement post reminds one of my friends (she's an year older than me but still) is also planning to get engaged by end of this month or so and it felt weird like we were 15 yesterday it feels so wrong in my head she's a baby why is she thinking about marriage (to be fair the guy is super rich and they'll have an year time to officially confirm if they actually want to get married) but it feels so wrong in my head win😭😭

i was talking to aki on literally this matter in morning and she kept saying my friend is a baby whys she getting married and i know we are too young but i was sort of expecting it since she comes from an islamic family and a couple other friends got married right after school im not new to this 😭
