Day 15
My buddy had cut an oak tree down at his dad's place and taken it to a kiln to dry. It was the perfect width. One nice big piece for all the counter top. Plus a little sentimental value with it being a tree from his folk's place.
Sadly, the kiln gave his tree to someone else and we had to scab some ripper boards onto the back of the slabs he got as replacements. It'll work. It'll just take more time.
Also, we got more doors up.

The Ultimate Guide to Kitchen Remodeling
A kitchen is more than just a space for cooking meals; it's the heart of a home, where memories are made, conversations flow, and culinary creations come to life. However, over time, even the most beloved kitchens can start to show signs of wear and tear, becoming outdated and inefficient. That's where a kitchen remodel comes in – a transformative journey that not only enhances the functionality and aesthetics of your space but also adds value to your home. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into every aspect of kitchen remodeling, from planning and design to execution and beyond, to help you create the kitchen of your dreams.
1. Assessing Your Needs and Setting Goals
Before diving into the world of kitchen remodeling, it's essential to take a step back and assess your needs and goals for the project. Start by asking yourself some fundamental questions:
What do you dislike about your current kitchen?
What features are essential to you in a new kitchen?
How do you envision using the space?
Are there any specific design styles or themes you're drawn to?
By understanding your priorities and vision for the remodel, you can better communicate your requirements to designers and contractors and ensure that the end result aligns with your expectations.
2. Planning and Designing Your Dream Kitchen
Once you've established your goals, it's time to start planning and designing your dream kitchen. This stage involves careful consideration of layout, functionality, and aesthetics. Some key factors to consider include:
Layout: The layout of your kitchen plays a significant role in its functionality and efficiency. Common layouts include the galley, L-shaped, U-shaped, and open-concept designs. Choose a layout that suits your cooking style and complements the flow of your home.
Storage: Ample storage is essential for keeping your kitchen organized and clutter-free. Consider incorporating features such as cabinets, drawers, pantry space, and built-in shelving to maximize storage capacity.
Appliances: Selecting the right appliances is crucial for both functionality and aesthetics. Consider factors such as size, style, energy efficiency, and smart technology integration when choosing appliances for your new kitchen.
Countertops and Surfaces: The choice of countertops and surfaces can have a significant impact on the overall look and feel of your kitchen. Options range from granite and quartz to marble and butcher block, each offering unique advantages in terms of durability, maintenance, and aesthetics.
Lighting: Proper lighting is essential for creating a bright, inviting atmosphere in your kitchen. Incorporate a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to ensure adequate illumination for cooking, dining, and entertaining.
Color Scheme and Finishes: The color scheme and finishes you choose can set the tone for your entire kitchen design. Whether you prefer a sleek, modern aesthetic or a cozy, rustic feel, select colors and finishes that reflect your personal style and complement your home's overall decor.
3. Budgeting and Financing
Once you have a clear vision and design plan for your new kitchen, it's time to establish a budget and explore financing options. Kitchen remodeling projects can vary significantly in cost depending on factors such as the size of the space, the quality of materials, and the scope of work involved. To create a realistic budget, consider obtaining quotes from multiple contractors and suppliers, factoring in both materials and labor costs. Additionally, explore financing options such as personal loans, home equity loans, or lines of credit to help cover the expenses of your remodel.
4. Hiring Professionals vs. DIY
While some homeowners may choose to tackle certain aspects of their kitchen remodel themselves, such as painting or minor upgrades, many aspects of the project are best left to professionals. Hiring experienced contractors, designers, and tradespeople can ensure that the work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard of quality. When selecting professionals for your kitchen remodel, be sure to conduct thorough research, check references, and obtain multiple quotes to find the right fit for your project.
5. Executing the Remodel
With a solid plan in place and professionals hired, it's time to kick off the construction phase of your kitchen remodel. Depending on the scope of work, this may involve:
Demolition of existing structures and fixtures
Installation of new cabinetry, countertops, and appliances
Plumbing and electrical work
Flooring installation
Painting or wall treatments
Finishing touches such as hardware, lighting fixtures, and trim
Throughout the construction process, maintain open communication with your contractors and designers to address any questions or concerns that may arise. Be prepared for some disruption to your daily routine, but keep your eyes on the prize – a beautiful, functional new kitchen that will bring joy and satisfaction for years to come.
6. Post-Remodel Maintenance and Care
Once your kitchen remodel is complete, it's essential to establish a routine maintenance and care plan to keep your new space looking and functioning its best. This may include:
Regular cleaning of surfaces, appliances, and fixtures
Periodic inspections for signs of wear or damage
Prompt repairs or replacements as needed
Updating decor and accessories to refresh the look of your kitchen over time
By investing time and effort into maintaining your kitchen, you can prolong its lifespan and continue to enjoy its benefits for years to come.
7. Enjoying Your New Kitchen
With your kitchen remodel successfully completed, it's time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Whether you're whipping up gourmet meals, hosting dinner parties, or simply spending quality time with loved ones, your new kitchen is sure to become the heart of your home – a space where memories are made, laughter is shared, and culinary adventures await. Cheers to your new kitchen and the countless joys it will bring!
