Disneyland ask #17: A ride you like that no one else likes
hmmmmm.... I personally get a little kick out of the nemo submarines. I'm deeply fascinated by submechanophobia and I think underwater travel is cool (even if you're not *really* underwater when riding the subs lol). My family finds the nemo subs to be boring, but I kinda like 'em hehe. Nice place to rest the legs after a long trek across the park imo.
I would have liked to experience the og 20,000 leagues under the sea version, mostly because that sea dragon creeps me out! (in a good way. I don't know how to explain this)

Start reading Episode 1
Dialogue transcripts:
Panel 1
Jekyll: This diary… has been most elucidating, I will not deny. It certainly explains the attacks of a few years ago, but not the most recent attacks.
Irene (offscreen): Why not?
Panel 2
Jekyll: That greenish substance, for one. You mentioned it was found on the wreckage of these attacks, but the good professor makes no mention of it—only of an electric light, which would leave no such residue.
Panel 3
Irene: A light—! I thought I saw one beneath the water during the storm, when we were trying to find…
Mina: Please, Dr. Jekyll, tell us all you can.
Panel 5
Panel 4
Jekyll: *sigh* Very well. As you suspected, Mrs. Norton, there is far more to Professor Aronnax’s journey than he has shared publicly, beginning from the moment he was lost overboard.
Jekyll, narrating: They were saved in an extraordinary fashion—brought aboard a vessel that travels under the sea. The captain, who called himself ‘Nemo’, was… a queer fellow, with many secrets. He refused to release them, lest the secret of his existence be discovered.
Panel 6
Griffin: A submarine! The old man’s less dull than I thought! How’d he get away, after all that?
Jekyll: He released them, though not until after seriously endangering their lives.
Panel 7
Jekyll, narrating: The three men were treated well—the professor most of all. Yet while voyaging near the South Pole, the ship became trapped under the ice, and the professor nearly suffocated. The captain became moody and avoided their company; then without explanation, freed them on an island off the coast of South America.

Random Thoughts About Disneyland & Star Wars Galaxy's Edge
Tumblr media
I had the chance to visit Disneyland California in Spring 2024, a trip that brought back a lot of memories since my last visit was decades ago as a kid. Reflecting on the experience now, here are my random thoughts...
General Thoughts
As a kid, I thought Disneyland was all about rides. Now, as an adult, I realize it’s a mix of rides, shops, and food.
The Park Hopper option isn't worth it. If you have the time, focus on one park per day. The distance between parks is farther than expected, and it doesn’t justify the extra cost.
Lightning Lane is definitely worth it. You can book a Lightning Lane for specific rides and then use the time between bookings to find rides with shorter lines and be more efficient.
The food is a bit expensive, but the quality is good.
One major difference from when I was a kid is the performers. Back then, characters roamed freely, ready for photos or autographs. Now, interactions are more structured—you usually need to book or wait in line.
Disneyland Park
The first thing my wife did was put the kids on Thunder Railroad, and she scared the shit out of them! The last time she went to Disneyland, she was a teenager and only cared about the more thrilling rides. We then got the kids to go on some of the story-based "dark rides" and the kids loved them - my wife did too.
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage was very different from when I was a kid (pre-Nemo) and it's been gussied-up with underwater screens, but despite the updates, it still felt quite dated. The ride is getting replaced, so I’m glad I had the chance to experience it one last time.
Indiana Jones™ Adventure had been overhyped in my mind for decades, so nothing could quite live up to that level of anticipation. The ride itself was still cool, but the movements were too jerky for my taste.
Mickey’s Runaway Railway was suprsingly good. We only tried it on the last day, but it was so good we wished we’d used a Lightning Lane on it every day.
My kids loved Pirates of the Caribbean—we rode it seven times!
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is wild—literally. It features the characters drinking, crashing, dying, and going through hell. I wonder what the hell the movie is about.
Mickey’s Toontown was still under construction the last time I went, so it was great to see it all finished. My kids enjoyed the playground areas, and it was neat to see the interactive stuff, even though a bunch of shit was busted.
Haunted Mansion and Splash Mountain were closed during our visit, so the kids missed out on those classic attractions. Hopefully, we’ll ride them next time.
Disneyland Star Wars
(Including the Star Tours stuff here even though its technically in Tomorrowland.)
Black Spire Outpost was an incredible experience. They nailed the Star Wars vibe—walking around felt like stepping into the movies. We caught the fireworks from there one night, and it was absolutely rad.
My kids loved the interactive features available through the app, which let them activate lights, sounds, and effects in the scenery. Not many people seemed to use these features, though.
Star Tours has been updated since the '90s, now featuring randomized content. Every ride offers a slightly different experience. My son and I rode it 13 times, almost seeing all the video segments—though Disney added more after we left. Guess that’s how they get you to return!
Smuggler’s Run made me feel sick, but I still went on it three times. The concept is awesome, but switching between watching the screen and pushing buttons messed with my stomach.
Rise of the Resistance: A friend told me I had to ride this—even if I had to pay to skip the line. So I did. Twice. Then, one evening, the line was only 40 minutes (we got through in 20), so we rode it again. Disney’s tricks are all on display here, and the trackless carts really enhance the immersion.
The build-your-own lightsaber and droid options were tempting, but hella expensive. We ended up getting the kids the cheaper lightsabers at Star Tours.
California Adventure park
This was my first time visiting California Adventure Park—it wasn’t around when I was a kid. Of course, it decided to rain during our visit, which dampened the experience.
My kids weren’t really into Pixar or Marvel at the time (though they’ve since become Marvel fans). Several rides were closed due to the weather, and many live performances were canceled, which was disappointing.
My son and I lined up for Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! The pre-boarding area and lead-up areas were awesome. The video content during the ride was great. However, the ride itself was, as the French say, horrible.
Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure was a lot of fun, and it's exciting to think about how the entire Marvel area will expand.
Pixar Pier felt like a cleaner, more polished version of Playland in Vancouver.
It was strange seeing people walking around with beers in a Disney park.
The Riveting Conclusion
Overall, it was a fantastic trip, and the kids already want to go back. Disneyland truly nails the details. The park’s expert design—with immersive areas and carefully crafted sightlines—makes each world feel like a complete escape.
Disneyland is a masterclass in “how to make you forget you’re standing in a parking lot.”

If the Fable Five went to any Disney parks what would their favorite rides or activities be?
I've never been to any Disney park so I can only go off videos I've seen with some outdated stuff since I know a lot has changed.
I know they would want to explore all the sights to get a feel of the place before settling on rides.
It's a Small World is the first one they go on because Ashe thinks it'll be fun for everyone (she doesn't. She's a liar. She just wants everyone's reactions to HELL AND SHE'LL TAKE HERSELF DOWN FOR THE VIEW)
They would also hit up the Haunted Mansion and what used to be Splash Mountain. Though the crew has to calm Kai down after the Haunted Mansion and tell him the entire "ghosts following them home" thing isn't real and there's no reason to worry.
There's also the ride that used to be the Tower of Terror which is now Guardians themed which makes me think of them all assigning each other characters while waiting. Along with Pinokuni getting pissed at how right off the back everyone agreed he was Rocket without a second of hesitation.
If they wind up going on the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage ride, Jack and Pinokuni are gonna have to hold hands as emotional support buddies because Jack is scared of deep bodies of water (and the ride tricks you into thinking you're in the ocean) and Pinokuni just fuckin hates the ocean and has submechaniphobia. The anglerfish jumpscare would also make Kai scream like a banshee.
The entire team would have to take 15 minutes to recover after getting off.
The Pirates of the Caribbean ride ain't much better save for the fact they all are above water now but Jack is clinging to Nana for fear life til they get to the town scenes.
I know the parks have lil snacks so Jack would bolt at any chance to get a sweet treat which means Nana has his hand in hers the entire time they are at the park so he can't just disappear. This only happens after 5 prior incidents of everyone taking their eyes off him and looking up to see his ass is gone.
They would all stay long enough to see the fireworks because 1) Pretty and 2) Ashe loves fireworks.

Voyage of the Nautilus: The Gulf Stream pt. 2
Trying my hand at live-reading even though I was bad and read ahead. But this chapter hurts and I need to yell about it.
“Sir,” he told me that day, “it’s got to stop. I want to get to the bottom of this. Your Nemo’s veering away from shore and heading up north. But believe you me, I had my fill at the South Pole and I’m not going with him to the North Pole.”
I like Ned putting his foot down lol. Big "this party's going on for way too long, I'm calling the Uber" vibes.
“I keep coming back to my idea. We’ve got to talk to the captain. When we were in your own country’s seas, you didn’t say a word. Now that we’re in mine, I intend to speak up. Before a few days are out, I figure the Nautilus will lie abreast of Nova Scotia, and from there to Newfoundland is the mouth of a large gulf, and the St. Lawrence empties into that gulf, and the St. Lawrence is my own river, the river running by Quebec, my hometown—and when I think about all this, my gorge rises and my hair stands on end! Honestly, sir, I’d rather jump overboard! I can’t stay here any longer! I’m suffocating!”
Ned :((( This chapter is so anxiety-inducing and you can feel the dread. Also "When we were in your own country’s seas, you didn’t say a word. Now that we’re in mine, I intend to speak up" is such a good line.
I had a sense of what he was suffering because I also was gripped by homesickness. Nearly seven months had gone by without our having any news from shore. Moreover, Captain Nemo’s reclusiveness, his changed disposition, and especially his total silence since the battle with the devilfish all made me see things in a different light. I no longer felt the enthusiasm of our first days on board.
Aronnax :((( Nemo :((( I wonder if Aronnax's homesickness was amplified (or rather unlocked) after hearing one of the crewmen speak French during the devilfish fight. Everyone's depressed on this submarine.
You needed to be Flemish like Conseil to accept these circumstances, living in a habitat designed for cetaceans and other denizens of the deep.
Except for Conseil, who seems to be fine just chilling. Is this a Flemish stereotype? Should I be side-eyeing Aronnax?
Truly, if that gallant lad had owned gills instead of lungs, I think he would have made an outstanding fish!
I still think this line is super cute. I wish someone would say I'd be an outstanding fish.
“But I rarely encounter him. He positively avoids me.” “All the more reason you should go look him up.” “I’ll confer with him, Ned.” “When?” the Canadian asked insistently. “When I encounter him.” “Professor Aronnax, would you like me to go find him myself?” “No, let me do it. Tomorrow—” “Today,” Ned Land said.
Ned "either communicate with him or just dump him already!" Land.
I entered. The captain was there. He was bending over his worktable and hadn’t heard me. Determined not to leave without questioning him, I drew closer. He looked up sharply, with a frowning brow, and said in a pretty stern tone: “Oh, it’s you! What do you want?” “To speak with you, captain.” “But I’m busy, sir, I’m at work. I give you the freedom to enjoy your privacy, can’t I have the same for myself?”
My anxiety is off the charts. I also love how short and abrupt his sentences suddenly get. It makes the encounter that much more tense.
Aronnax saying they "were miles apart" ;-; Turns out the 20,000 leagues was the distance that grew between him and Nemo this whole time.
“Here, Professor Aronnax, is a manuscript written in several languages. It contains a summary of my research under the sea, and God willing, it won’t perish with me. Signed with my name, complete with my life story, this manuscript will be enclosed in a small, unsinkable contrivance. The last surviving man on the Nautilus will throw this contrivance into the sea, and it will go wherever the waves carry it.”
Only during my second reading did I realize that this is essentially a suicide note. Oh fuck. Then Aronnax going "👀 I wanna see that manuscript..."
The exchange between Nemo and Aronnax was brutal and tense, holy shit. You can feel Aronnax's anxiety and frustration and Nemo's impatience. The chapter they spent trapped under the ice wasn't as suffocating.
“Ned Land can think, attempt, or endeavor anything he wants, what difference is it to me? I didn’t go looking for him! I don’t keep him on board for my pleasure! As for you, Professor Aronnax, you’re a man able to understand anything, even silence. I have nothing more to say to you. Let this first time you’ve come to discuss this subject also be the last, because a second time I won’t even listen.” I withdrew. From that day forward our position was very strained.
I don't like it when they fight :(
But the skies became more and more threatening. There were conspicuous signs of a hurricane on the way. The atmosphere was turning white and milky. Slender sheaves of cirrus clouds were followed on the horizon by layers of nimbocumulus. Other low clouds fled swiftly. The sea grew towering, inflated by long swells. Every bird had disappeared except a few petrels, friends of the storms. The barometer fell significantly, indicating a tremendous tension in the surrounding haze. The mixture in our stormglass decomposed under the influence of the electricity charging the air. A struggle of the elements was approaching.
It's so cinematic aaaa. I love the way the weather matches the tension inside the submarine. Not the optimal weather for an escape, but I think Ned is in "I don't care if the price surge is 200%, I'm calling the Uber!" mode.

20k Leagues under the Sea, Jules Verne
Part 2, chapter 23 Conclusion
CHAPTER XXIII CONCLUSION
Thus ends the voyage under the seas. What passed during that night—how the boat escaped from the eddies of the maelstrom—how Ned Land, Conseil, and myself ever came out of the gulf, I cannot tell.
But when I returned to consciousness, I was lying in a fisherman’s hut, on the Loffoden Isles. My two companions, safe and sound, were near me holding my hands. We embraced each other heartily.
At that moment we could not think of returning to France. The means of communication between the north of Norway and the south are rare. And I am therefore obliged to wait for the steamboat running monthly from Cape North.
And, among the worthy people who have so kindly received us, I revise my record of these adventures once more. Not a fact has been omitted, not a detail exaggerated. It is a faithful narrative of this incredible expedition in an element inaccessible to man, but to which Progress will one day open a road.
Shall I be believed? I do not know. And it matters little, after all. What I now affirm is, that I have a right to speak of these seas, under which, in less than ten months, I have crossed 20,000 leagues in that submarine tour of the world, which has revealed so many wonders.
But what has become of the Nautilus? Did it resist the pressure of the maelstrom? Does Captain Nemo still live? And does he still follow under the ocean those frightful retaliations? Or, did he stop after the last hecatomb?
Will the waves one day carry to him this manuscript containing the history of his life? Shall I ever know the name of this man? Will the missing vessel tell us by its nationality that of Captain Nemo?
I hope so. And I also hope that his powerful vessel has conquered the sea at its most terrible gulf, and that the Nautilus has survived where so many other vessels have been lost! If it be so—if Captain Nemo still inhabits the ocean, his adopted country, may hatred be appeased in that savage heart! May the contemplation of so many wonders extinguish for ever the spirit of vengeance! May the judge disappear, and the philosopher continue the peaceful exploration of the sea! If his destiny be strange, it is also sublime. Have I not understood it myself? Have I not lived ten months of this unnatural life? And to the question asked by Ecclesiastes three thousand years ago, “That which is far off and exceeding deep, who can find it out?” two men alone of all now living have the right to give an answer——
CAPTAIN NEMO AND MYSELF.

IP-Neutral Disneyland
So, bit of backstory, I was reading some rumours about the Mickey Mouse copyright expiring and one silly rumor was the concept of Mickey being replaced by Figment in the parks, which is obviously completely unlikely considering not just the recent park updates (Toontown being a big example) but also that it means replacing an IP character with a Park Exclusive character, which with the recent IP-happy park designers would be a likely no. But what if it was the opposite? What if, instead of a theme park with several IP based attractions and areas, you had a theme park with ZERO IP based attractions and areas? That means nothing based on films, tv shows, or books and only using original property created for the parks ex. Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain, etc.
Let’s start this experiment!
For this experiment, I will be focusing on the og park Disneyland California as it is the oldest and also I own the Disneyland Encyclopedia Updated Third Edition (2017) so I can look back through history to see if an IP attraction had an IP-neutral past. I'll be putting aside the three IP-heavy lands, Fantasyland, Toontown, and Galaxy's Edge for the end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAIN STREET USA
Nearly all of Main Street is non-IP so the only changes would be removing some of the movie specific stuff (though the place did have a theatre that showed actual movies so you could excuse showing Disney cartoons and movies). Also, Jolly Holiday Baking Café would have to go, likely replaced by the old Blue Ribbon Bakery.
TOMORROWLAND
Simply put, no Star Wars or Pixar. This doesn’t mean losing the rides, just altering them. Finding Nemo’s Submarine Voyage just needs to return back to it’s old non-IP ride Submarine Voyage. Astro Blasters can have a similar theme of being a space patrol officer defeating alien criminals, just without Buzz Lightyear (although I kinda wanna sneak in some TV references). As for Star Tours, you could have a similar theme of rouge smugglers trying to get a person of interest or package away from government forces… or you can have it be like Space Jungle Cruise where you’re touring real or fictional planets and maybe something goes wrong. Possibilities are pretty endless with Star Tours virtual ride system. Speaking of embracing Tomorrowland’s past, the spot where the IP Pizza Planet is used to be where Mission to Mars and Rocket to the Moon were, so why not theme the restaurant to be set on Mars or our Moon!
ADVENTURELAND
@disneylanddilettante had a very good IP-neutral treehouse concept called Castaway Treehouse. As for the famous Indiana Jones ride, I do have a solution from the eastern parks: S.E.A also known as the Society of Explorers and Adventurers is a Park Exclusive fictional group that exists in several attractions including Mystic Manor and Fortress Exploration. It also has several members that are spread through Disney’s attractions (ex. Dr. Albert Falls of Jungle Cruise)… including Jock Lindsey from Raiders of the Lost Ark. So all Disney would need to do is replace Indy (and any other movie character from the series) with a different member of S.E.A. The rest of the ride can stay the same.
FRONTIERLAND
The only edit would be Tom Sawyer’s Island. Maybe rebrand it an outlaw hideout to fit the western theme. (Also no Fantasmic)
NEW ORLEANS SQUARE
No big edits except for restoring Pirates of the Caribbean to it’s former non-movie ride
CRITTER COUNTRY
Bit of history; Before the Song of the South ride came to Disneyland, the area of Critter Country was entirely based around a ride that proved successful in Walt Disney World and was made after the plans for a Disney ski resort were cancelled. That ride was Country Bear Jamboree and the land was Bear Country, a peaceful quiet corner of the park. In fact Splash Mountain was only added to bring more crowds in. So, in terms of fixing it, keep the Pacific Northwest bear theme and play with that. Disney has proven to be able to make original bear characters, add in a couple of American legends (Paul Bunyan for example) and keep Splash Mountain but make it an original story instead of Songs Of The South.
GALAXY’S EDGE
Obviously, we can’t keep this because the entire area is Star Wars. I do have two options for replacements though: The first is expanding Frontierland or Bear Country to create more natural landscapes for exploration or more ride space (and connect the two lands) The second is bringing in the lost Discovery Bay that would have brought a nineteenth century Barbosas Bay with plenty of unique attractions
TOONTOWN
Ok so this one might seem impossible considering the main mouse, but as countless video games and shows have proven, you can make a cartoon universe without relying on an existing real world cartoon. Hell the plot of Who Framed Roger Rabbit revolved around a fictional cartoon series! You can keep the generic toon-like world without the movie references, making it about a fictional cartoon world and having the rides be different episodes (or have one be an episode like Runaway Railroad and the other be a backstage tour of Toontown that goes wrong like Car-Toon Spin).
FANTASYLAND
The original IP zone, as was the intention of it during all it’s various concepts. So how do you make it IP-Neutral? Well for that I’m taking inspiration off one of the only two IP-Neutral rides in Fantasyland: The Swiss-themed Matterhorn Mountain and Matterhorn Bobsleds. I would LOVE to see more Switzerland architecture and castles cause it is BEAUTIFUL. Plus, Switzerland has quite a few myths that could make for interesting attractions, including William Tell, dragons, witches, avalance-surfing dwarfs, etc (actually that last one could make a fun alternate Mad Tea Party ride)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see, some of the park wouldn’t change at all or very little (Main Street USA, Frontierland, etc) while others would be completely different from what they are today (Fantasyland, Critter Country, etc). Does it prove that Disneyland be better or worse without the IPs? I leave that to you guys to discuss, I’m just having fun with coming up with an alternatve to Unnecciary Sci-Fi Franchise Land.

Hahaha you woke me up with this one bitch.
Guess what one of the things I'm obsessed with is? Take a fucking guess.
Theme Parks.
Specifically Disney Theme Parks since I grew up going to the CA parks
Anyways there's already two Finding Nemo Attractions. Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage at Disneyland CA and The Seas with Nemo & Friends in the Seas Pavilion at EPCOT in Florida. I've been to fucking both of them. Neither of them are that great , they're a submarine ride and a flat omnimover, and replaced far greater things, but that's not the point here.
You wanna take a fucking guess as to what you see when you walk out into the Seas Pavilion at EPCOT???? Wanna take a fucking guess????? Its a goddamn fucking aquarium. There's already a fucking Aquarium for Finding Nemo, so you're a goddamn fool jot that down.
Wanna know something else? How its completely fucking stupid to have One Singular Clownfish in a massive aquarium???? I swear to fucking god the people writing this shit are the dumbest people on earth.
Anyways there's a whole rant I could go on about how pissed I am about the focus on IP based attractions when it would be so cool if we could have original attractions A La original EPCOT which The EPCOT Nemo ride played a part in fucking up but that's not the point here. Also we could have had Atlantis Submarine Voyage, I'm never going to be over that.
But yeah. Don't fucking do that that's stupid as shit and we don't need more Nemo at the parks. Fuck Off.
Disney should have a Finding Nemo attraction which would be a huge aquarium filled with all kinds of fish but only one clown fish
