Jamie Blackmails Richmond
Tumblr media
@bluestone-dragon
Well you see, it's very easy to blackmail Richmond, because Richmond lacks good hiring practices, a solid code of conduct for its employees, and an HR department (apparently).
This one basically takes the "what if we didn't treat this as a joke" route to how Roy treats Jamie and to the lack of intervention into how Roy treats Jamie from the coaching staff and/or Rebecca and Higgins.
I want to emphasize that Roy's treatment of Jamie is inappropriate (Ola's, various threats to the genitals, refusal to coach), medically inadvisable (extra coaching, dick strings), flat out dangerous (extra training, attempted assaults, dick strings), and often illegal (dick strings, the assorted attempted assaults, threats of sexual torture). And in this universe, Jamie is aware of this but kind of unclear on what can be done about it, because clearly Beard and Ted have ZERO interest in making Roy be less abusive/toxic/criminal.
What do you do when you're in a toxic workplace that you legally can't leave (without severe repercussions to his career/financial situation)?
(want to emphasize that Jamie makes a SHIT wage for the Prem, probably like 350k per year. That's very good for people standards, but he would be the lowest paid on the team and among the lowest paid int he Prem, despite being incredible)
You go to HR: it turns out that Richmond's HR department is either ludicrously incompetent as a holdover from Rupert's days in charge, when he gutted them to remove a proper way of filing complaints about him, or Rebecca gutted them when she came into power because of their lack of appropriate action against Rupert, and then forgot to fix them when she had her come to Jesus moment, or HR are too starstruck by the Roy Kent Effect that they're unwilling to take action because it's Roy Kent.
So Jamie gets himself a fucking lawyer, finds out that his case against Richmond is iron-clad (which it is. All of this is done very publicly, with no one seeming to think that Roy is doing anything wrong except that it is EXTREMELY illegal).
Lawyer lays all this out to Rebecca and Higgins (who get their own lawyerly advice and find out they're fucked), and they agree to settle outside of the courts.
The deal is basically that Richmond will sell Jamie to an interested club of his choice in the summer following season 3, and he will receive a percentage of the fee paid to Richmond (fixed amount x or y% of the transfer fee, whichever is higher, etc).
Jamie leaves.
I haven't quite decided where- maybe Arsenal because I love Odegaard and Jamie would love Odegaard, and then he'd be on a top flight team competing in the Champions League every year and recently in the running for the Prem title. Maybe Liverpool, because I love them and he would love Klopp. Maybe Bayern Munich, just 'cause, or some other top team in Spain or Germany. Not PSG. Never PSG.

The pop superstar is being praised for her “incredible” donations to food banks in the U.K. cities that hosted her Eras Tour this month.
The Guardian reports that Swift, 34, made the largest individual donation ever to Cardiff Foodbank in Cardiff, Wales, where the “Fortnight” singer performed on June 18.
“This will provide the weight equivalent to feeding 1,200 people three meals a day, for three days – or 10,800 meals. This will be 2.5 weeks of what we typically distribute,” said the charity’s chief executive, Rachel Biggs.
“The breathing space Taylor’s donation has given us will enable us to lift our heads and shift our focus from the food bank to the creation of a sustainable operation supporting people who currently need our help with support to address the root cause of poverty and financial support to set them on the path to not needing our aid anymore,” added Biggs.
Meanwhile, in Liverpool, where Swift performed three shows from June 13 to June 15, the chief executive of St Andrew’s Community Network called her donation the “most incredible gift.”
“Because of rising prices, rising need and falling donations, we’ve been having to subsidize our food ourselves for a long while,” said Rich Jones, the charity’s exec.
“But it’s fair to say that Taylor Swift has essentially paid our food bill for 12 months – and that gives us the breathing space to focus on fundraising efforts going forward,” Jones added. “To really look at how we can achieve our ambition of ending the need for food banks in the first place through financial advice, income maximization work, welfare benefits and work.”

Where to Rent Reliable Cabling Equipment in Liverpool: Top Options and Tips
Cabling projects demand specialised equipment to ensure efficiency, precision, and safety, especially in urban environments like Liverpool. For contractors, electricians, and companies alike, renting cabling equipment is an ideal and cost-effective solution. It provides flexibility without the financial and logistical commitments of outright purchasing. Renting also grants access to the latest technology, ensuring that teams have advanced, up-to-date tools without the responsibilities of maintenance and storage. This is especially beneficial for short-term or one-off projects, where the costs of purchasing may outweigh the benefits.
Liverpool hosts a range of reputable rental providers that offer high-quality cabling equipment to suit diverse project needs. Whether you're engaged in telecommunications, network cabling, or electrical installations, finding the right rental provider can help streamline your project. This guide outlines the top cabling renting options in Liverpool and offers key tips to help you choose reliable equipment that meets your needs.
Tumblr media
Key Benefits of Renting Cabling Equipment
Cost-Effectiveness: Purchasing equipment outright is a significant investment, particularly for smaller companies or contractors working on one-time projects. Renting cabling equipment enables businesses to budget more effectively by only paying for equipment when needed, eliminating ongoing costs like maintenance and depreciation. By renting, companies can reallocate funds to other essential project areas, maintaining high efficiency without overspending.
Access to the Latest Technology: Cabling technology evolves quickly, with new models offering advanced features that improve productivity and safety on the job. Renting allows companies to access these updated tools, ensuring they’re using the most effective equipment for each project. For instance, newer cable pulling machines and winches come with safety enhancements and ergonomic features that reduce strain on operators. Renting means you’re not tied to older models, allowing you to work with the latest technology without the expense of purchasing and eventually upgrading.
Reduced Maintenance and Storage Concerns: Owning cabling equipment involves ongoing maintenance to ensure optimal functionality and safety. This can add both time and cost to a project. Rental equipment is typically maintained and serviced by the provider, so you receive equipment in peak condition. Additionally, renting eliminates the need for storage solutions once the project ends, making it ideal for companies with limited space.
Top Rental Options for Cabling Equipment in Liverpool
Local Equipment Hire Providers: Liverpool is home to several reputable equipment hire companies specialising in cabling equipment for all types of projects. These providers offer a wide selection of tools, from cable pulling machines and winches to tension meters and other specialised cabling tools. They cater to specific project needs, allowing contractors to choose equipment based on requirements like cable weight and distance. Many of these local providers offer flexible rental terms, accommodating various budgets and project timelines, with options for daily, weekly, or monthly rentals. Consulting with a local hire provider also means access to expert advice, helping you select the right tools for your project.
Online Equipment Rental Platforms: For added convenience, online rental platforms allow businesses to explore a wide variety of cabling equipment without needing to visit a rental location. These platforms provide easy access to rental prices, contract terms, and equipment specifications, allowing you to compare options and select the best solution directly from your office. Online rental platforms may also offer delivery services, so you can have the necessary equipment brought directly to your site, which is especially beneficial for time-sensitive projects or those located in busy urban areas.
National Rental Chains with Liverpool Locations: In addition to local providers, national equipment rental chains often have branches in Liverpool, offering a broad range of cabling equipment and other construction tools. These larger rental companies may provide additional benefits, such as loyalty programs or bulk discounts for ongoing projects. Additionally, national chains may offer remote support or troubleshooting for complex equipment, providing peace of mind on projects requiring high-tech or specialised tools.
Tips for Choosing Reliable Cabling Equipment Rentals
Evaluate the Equipment Condition: Before renting any cabling equipment, thoroughly inspect the condition and functionality of the tools. Reliable rental companies will provide well-maintained equipment, regularly inspected and serviced to ensure safety and efficiency. It’s wise to ask about the maintenance practices in place, including any records of recent servicing. Faulty or poorly maintained equipment can lead to delays, accidents, or subpar project outcomes, so evaluating condition is essential.
Check Rental Terms and Flexibility: Rental terms can vary significantly across providers. Some companies offer flexible, short-term rentals ideal for quick jobs, while others may have minimum rental periods that could add to costs if you need the equipment for a shorter duration. It’s essential to understand the rental terms in detail, including flexibility for extensions, additional charges for overdue returns, or provisions for insurance. By matching the terms with your project’s timeline and budget, you’ll ensure a smoother process without unforeseen costs.
Consider Customer Support and Training: Some cabling equipment, such as complex winches or advanced tension meters, may require specialised handling. Rental providers that offer customer support or basic training can be valuable, especially if your team is unfamiliar with specific equipment. Access to quick support ensures your project stays on track, and training ensures your team can safely and effectively operate the rented equipment.
Conclusion
For contractors and businesses in Liverpool, renting cabling equipment offers a practical solution that combines cost-effectiveness, flexibility, and access to advanced technology. By selecting a reliable rental provider and considering key factors such as equipment condition, rental terms, and customer support, you can ensure a successful project outcome. Whether you're managing a large-scale installation or a smaller, specialised job, renting cabling equipment allows you to stay current with the latest tools without the financial and logistical burdens of ownership. With the right equipment on hand, you’ll have the efficiency and precision needed to complete your project smoothly and effectively, optimising your resources and delivering quality results on time.

Fostering in Liverpool: Making a Difference Today
Fostering in Liverpool is an opportunity to make a lasting impact in the lives of children and young people who need stable and loving homes. As a city that values community and inclusion, Liverpool offers a robust network for foster carers, providing comprehensive support and training to meet the needs of both foster families and children in care.
Tumblr media
The Current Need for Foster Carers in Liverpool
In recent years, the demand for foster carers has increased significantly, driven by a variety of factors, including family breakdowns, parental illness, and economic challenges. Liverpool, like many other cities in the UK, is experiencing a shortage of foster families, meaning many children are waiting for a safe and nurturing home. This shortage is especially pronounced for older children, teenagers, sibling groups, and children with additional needs.
By stepping forward to foster, you not only change a child’s future but also contribute to easing the strain on local services that struggle to find placements for vulnerable children.
Who Can Foster?
One of the key messages from fostering services in Liverpool is that fostering is open to a diverse range of people. It doesn’t matter whether you are single, married, living with a partner, or part of the LGBTQ+ community. Foster carers can come from different ethnic backgrounds, religions, and walks of life. What matters most is the ability to provide a stable, loving, and safe environment for a child.
Potential foster carers should have a spare room, be over 21 years of age, and possess the emotional resilience to handle the challenges that fostering can bring. Empathy, patience, and a willingness to work as part of a team with social workers, birth families, and other professionals are essential traits for successful fostering.
Support and Training for Foster Carers
Liverpool provides extensive support to foster carers, ensuring that no one feels isolated or overwhelmed. Local fostering services offer comprehensive training before you even begin fostering, covering areas such as child development, trauma-informed care, safeguarding, and dealing with complex behaviors. After the initial training, foster carers continue to receive ongoing support through regular visits from social workers, peer networks, and access to specialized advice, should any issues arise.
Moreover, Liverpool City Council and independent fostering agencies in the area work collaboratively to ensure foster carers have access to 24-hour support, financial allowances, and respite care when needed. This holistic approach aims to create a sustainable fostering experience that benefits both carers and children.
The Rewards of Fostering
Fostering can be challenging, but the rewards are immense. Many foster carers describe the experience as life-changing, not only for the children they care for but also for their own families. Watching a child grow in confidence, develop new skills, and overcome past traumas is deeply fulfilling. Foster carers in Liverpool often become lifelong advocates for the children they support, celebrating their milestones and helping them transition into adulthood.
Additionally, fostering provides an opportunity to build long-term relationships. While some foster placements are short-term, many lead to lasting bonds between carers and children. For those able to provide long-term or permanent placements, the role becomes not just about offering temporary care but providing a forever family for a child who has faced instability.
The Role of the Community
Liverpool’s strong sense of community plays an essential role in fostering. Schools, healthcare professionals, and social services collaborate to ensure that children in care have access to the resources they need to thrive. This network of support means that foster carers are never alone; they are part of a broader team working towards the best outcomes for every child.
Moreover, local charities and community organizations often partner with fostering agencies to provide extracurricular activities, mentoring programs, and emotional support for children in care. This community engagement helps to reduce stigma, promote understanding, and create an environment where children in care can flourish.
How to Start Fostering in Liverpool
If you're considering fostering in Liverpool, the first step is to get in touch with a fostering service or agency. They will guide you through the application process, which involves an initial enquiry, home visits, and an assessment of your suitability to foster. While the process may seem lengthy, it’s designed to ensure that fostering is the right fit for you and that you’re equipped to handle the responsibilities that come with it.
There are also regular information sessions and events where you can meet current foster carers, ask questions, and learn more about what fostering entails. Many people find that hearing first-hand experiences is one of the most helpful ways to understand the realities and rewards of fostering.
Tumblr media
Fostering in Liverpool is about more than just providing a home—it’s about changing lives. With the city’s rich tradition of community spirit and compassion, foster carers in Liverpool are uniquely positioned to make a significant difference in the lives of children and young people. Whether you are just starting to consider fostering or are ready to take the next step, fostering services in Liverpool are here to support you every step of the way.

Find the Rightful Owners of Empty Building UK before Investing
The United Kingdom, with its rich architectural heritage, is home to numerous empty buildings, ranging from historic landmarks to modern structures. Investing in these properties can be a lucrative opportunity, but it's essential to ensure that rightful ownership is established before proceeding. Empty buildings in the UK often include derelict homes, unused commercial spaces, and abandoned industrial sites. According to recent statistics, there are over 600,000 vacant properties in the country, with many concentrated in urban areas such as London, Manchester, and Liverpool. These buildings represent both a challenge and an opportunity for investors.
Tumblr media
Legal and Ownership Considerations
Before investing in an empty building, it's crucial to verify the legal ownership. Issues of ownership can be complex, especially if the property has been vacant for a long time or if the ownership records are outdated. Potential investors should conduct thorough due diligence, including:
Obtain a title report to verify the current owner and any outstanding claims or liens on the property.
Legal Advice
Consult with a property lawyer to navigate any legal complexities and ensure all paperwork is in order.
Contact the Owners
In some cases, the rightful owner may be difficult to locate. Public records, local authorities, and community outreach can help in tracking down the owner.
The Benefits of Due Diligence
Ensuring rightful ownership before investing protects against potential legal disputes and financial losses. It also paves the way for smoother transactions and redevelopment processes. By taking the time to confirm ownership, investors can confidently move forward with their projects, contributing to the revitalization of communities and the preservation of the UK's architectural heritage.
While the investment in empty buildings in the UK holds great promise, it's imperative to find and verify the rightful owners before committing resources. This approach not only safeguards the investment but also ensures compliance with legal requirements, ultimately leading to successful and sustainable development projects.

How To Choose The Right Braces In Liverpool
Tumblr media
Embarking on the journey to straighten your teeth is an exciting step towards achieving a confident and radiant smile. However, with the variety of braces available in Liverpool, it's crucial to make an informed decision to ensure the best possible outcome for your orthodontic treatment. This article will guide you through essential considerations on how to choose the right braces in Liverpool, taking into account individual preferences, lifestyle, and orthodontic needs.
Consultation with Orthodontic Professionals :
Before making any decisions, schedule a consultation with experienced orthodontic professionals in Liverpool. They will assess your oral health, discuss your goals, and provide expert advice on the most suitable braces for your specific case.
Consider Your Lifestyle :
Different types of braces cater to various lifestyles. If you prefer a discreet option, Invisalign clear aligners might be suitable as they are virtually invisible and can be removed for eating and cleaning. On the other hand, traditional metal braces may be the right choice for those looking for a cost-effective and durable solution.
Aesthetic Preferences :
If the appearance of braces is a concern, explore options such as ceramic braces or lingual braces. Ceramic braces blend in with your teeth due to tooth-colored or clear brackets, while lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth, offering a more discreet treatment option.
Treatment Duration :
Consider your desired treatment duration. Some types of braces, such as self-ligating braces, may potentially offer faster results due to reduced friction and efficient tooth movement. Discuss your timeline goals with your orthodontist to find a solution that aligns with your expectations.
Budgetary Constraints :
Your budget is a crucial factor in choosing the right braces. Traditional metal braces are generally more cost-effective, while options like Invisalign or lingual braces may come with a higher price tag. Discuss payment plans and financing options with your orthodontist to find a solution that fits your financial situation.
Orthodontic Needs :
The severity of your orthodontic issues will play a significant role in determining the most suitable braces. While Invisalign is effective for mild to moderate cases, traditional metal braces may be recommended for more complex orthodontic issues.
Patient Reviews and Testimonials :
Research patient reviews and testimonials to gain insights into the experiences of others who have undergone similar orthodontic treatments in Liverpool. This can provide valuable perspectives and help you make a more informed decision.
Conclusion :
Choosing the right  braces in Liverpool is a personalized decision that requires careful consideration of various factors. By consulting with orthodontic professionals, assessing lifestyle preferences, considering aesthetics, evaluating treatment duration, managing budgetary constraints, and understanding orthodontic needs, you can navigate the array of options available and embark on your journey to a straighter, healthier smile with confidence.

A circuit-break will save thousands of lives
Tumblr media
By Christina Pagel
Sage, the organisation which provides guidance to the government on covid, recently recommended a two to three week 'circuit-breaker' to reverse the spread of the virus, followed by additional restrictions until case numbers came down to early September levels. Their advice was ignored.
New cases, hospital admissions and deaths are now more than four times higher than they were four weeks ago. And they are continuing to grow – doubling around every two weeks. This corresponds to an R of 1.3, bang in the middle of the current Sage estimate for England.
I agree with Sage. A two-week circuit break, with financial support on a par with the Spring, is needed now to reverse the spread of covid, followed by some weeks of less restrictive measures to continue to drive cases down. This will save thousands of lives and tens of thousands of people from needing to go to hospital.
Sage modellers came to the same conclusion in a paper last week. We must use those weeks to rebuild our public health infrastructure and ensure future circuit breaks are never needed again. Independent Sage, my own group, has suggested a detailed plan for doing so. Here I am going to use some basic maths to demonstrate how even waiting two more weeks to implement a circuit break could cost thousands of lives.
The last week of September and first week of October saw 512 deaths, almost 4,000 hospital admissions and 91,000 confirmed cases in England. The most recent two weeks have seen 1,105 deaths, almost 8,000 hospital admissions and 182,000 confirmed cases. It takes a week or so to develop symptoms after infections and another week or so before illness become severe enough for admission. Those who die, do so after about two weeks in hospital on average. This means that almost all the people who are going to die from covid over the next four weeks already have covid.
The awful consequences of that relentless doubling will now play out over the next few weeks. It's likely 2,000 people will die over the next two weeks and 4,000 the two weeks after that. If cases continue to double over the next two weeks then we might be seeing 8,000 deaths and tens of thousands of hospital admissions over the last two weeks of November.
The government's solution is its three tiered system. This will not be enough. It's already not been enough. Much of the North of England has been in the equivalent of the current Tier 2 restrictions since mid-September and some places for much longer than that, with the rest of England in the equivalent of Tier 1 restrictions. Cases have been rising regardless.
Tier 3, which involves closing pubs unless they serve "substantive meals", has now been introduced in Liverpool and Lancashire. Sage has a helpful table of interventions and the potential impact on R which estimates that full closure of pubs and restaurants might reduce R by between 0.1 and 0.2 – the restriction to "substantive meals" only will have a much smaller impact. So Tier 3 on its own will not be enough to bring R below 1. Even Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance have acknowledged this.
If we are being very generous, the tiered system and changing behaviour might reduce R to 1.1. Because of the lag between infection and hospitalisation, we wouldn't see any impact on admissions for two weeks, but after that we might see a slower increase. This is better than the current situation but will still mean ever increasing numbers of deaths at the end of November and increasing pressure on the NHS just as winter really starts to bite.
We need to reduce new infections right now. Covid is spreading in every region of England. While absolute numbers of cases are lowest in the South West, South East and East of England, they are rapidly going up. All three regions saw a tripling of cases in the two weeks to 9th October. We need to reduce R below 1 in all regions – and that means national restrictions.
The slower way would be to pick from the range of likely interventions in Sage's table that together would safely reduce R to below 1. If we want to keep schools open (the single largest contributor), this would mean a combination of many new restrictions. But if we could get R to 0.9 today, in two weeks we should start seeing admissions start to decline and deaths start to decline two weeks after that. Compared to the current tiered plan, we might see almost 30,000 fewer hospitalisations and 4,000 fewer deaths by the beginning of December. But it would still take until mid-December before we return even to today's high admission numbers.
We can do it more quickly. Sage estimated that a return to Spring lockdown, which would include closing schools, could reduce R to between 0.6 and 0.7. This would have a dramatic immediate impact, almost halving new infections every week. Even just doing this for two weeks from today, so that it coincided with half term, followed by a less restrictive set of measures that keep R below 1, this time with schools open, would save thousands more lives - about 2,500 more than the slower reduction and 6,500 more than the current tiered system.
This would result entirely from drastically reducing transmission over the next two weeks. We'd be close to September levels of cases and admissions by mid-November, making it easier for an improved test, trace and isolate structure to take over the strain of keeping transmission down.
It's inevitable that more restrictions will be needed to reverse current growth. At some point soon, the government is going to be forced to do something more. Waiting one, two or three weeks to do a circuit break will still work to reduce transmission, but it'll be at the cost of thousands of lives and tens of thousands of hospitalisations in the meantime. As Sage scientists said last week: "The optimal time for a break is always now".

HFC Bank were fined £1,085,000 for failing to take reasonable care to make sure that the advice provided to customers when purchasing PPI was suitable, and for failing to possess adequate systems and controls in spot to monitor the sale of PPI and the AA has been branded the business to offer the most expensive PPI policies by the Times online.
Blackhorse may also be amongst the listing of lenders being accused of mis-selling PPI with the main allegation against them being that the interest rate they agreed to customers who chose to obtain PPI was significantly less than the interest rate for a passing fancy loan amount for folks who didn't want PPI. Three firms: Regency, Loans.co.uk and the Home Shopping firm Redcats have already been handed fines for mis sold mortgages and selling payment protection insurance to customers that could not have needed it. Redcats were fined £270,000.
It's strongly advised that whoever has a loan, charge card or mortgage should check their agreement to spot whether they've a Payment Protection Insurance policy. If this is the case and you think it may have been mis sold to you, then you should consider building a complaint.

In his bid to take over the historic British left-wing magazine, The Tribune, Jacobin publisher Bhaskar Sunkara is being accused of reneging on wage deal by employees of the paper, who kept the publication alive during struggling times. Tribune was once the home of such greats as George Orwell and has since become the leading publication associated with the influential Momentum faction within the Labor Party.
The purchase of the paper seemed like an ideal takeover for Sunkara linking his viral socialist publication in America with the struggling legacy British paper.
This past weekend, Sunkara had a high-profile launch event attended by influential members of the Labor Party, including British member of Parliament Jon Trickett and Len McCluskey, General Secretary of 1.2 million member Unite the Union, the largest union in the UK. The Liverpool featured the French socialist leader Juan-Luc Melenchon as well as Julia Salazar, who despite falsely portraying herself as a working-class immigrant from Colombia, was successful in her bid to be the Democratic nominee for an influential State Senate seat based in Brooklyn.
The event received much fanfare, however underneath the takeover of the storied British publication by the American publisher, media workers activists say that he’s done it by exploiting those, who produce content for socialist publications.
Workers say that Sunkara promised that if workers took a settlement of only 70% of the back wages that they were owed that he would bring them back as staffers after taking over the publication. However, Sunkara in a statement to Payday confirmed that he would not bring the staffers back.
The workers in a series of open letters have accused Sunkara of lying to them and simply taking over the publication to expand Jacobin’s content reach into European markets under the Tribune’s prestigious name.
“In the capitalist world someone who buys an ailing company and dumps its committed workers is known as an asset-stripper or robber baron, but at least they don’t claim to be socialists,” said former Tribune employee Ian Hernon.
The dispute between the British magazine’s staff and its new publisher Bhaskar Sunkara, the 29-year-old son of a well-to-do family from the elite New York City suburbs of Westchester County, raises vital questions about how leftists publications treat the workers they employ.
The brash 29-year-old Bhaskar Sunkara, the founder and publisher of the Brooklyn based socialist magazine Jacobin, has proven to be one of the most controversial figures in the left press: known for increasing the reach of socialist writing while engaging in labor practices far less than socialist.
At a time when many speculated that print was dead, Sunkara built a socialist publication founded in 2011 that proudly boasts of publishing over a thousand articles a year, a print subscription of 30,000 and over one million page views a month online. In addition, the publication boasts of a specialized Jacobin book published by Verso press that has produced a dozen books, a separate academic journal “Catalyst: A Journal of Theory and Strategy of Strategy” launched last year, and dozens of Jacobin reading groups throughout the country that help the publication raise money.
However, Sunkara, has been accused of building his empire by underpaying his writers with many making on average $50-$100 a story.
For years, Sunkara and his allies have claimed that the socialist publication lacked the resources to pay its writers.
However, the purchase of the 80-year-old legacy British publication from the British football club Blackpool raised questions about what exactly Sunkara did with the money he saved by underpaying his writers at the Brooklyn-based Jacobin Magazine.
In the last year, the Tribune struggled with financial issues and discontinued print editions in January. In the interim period, a skeleton crew of writers and editors struggled to keep the publication afloat as a strictly online publication as they shopped for buyers of the storied publication. As part of his proposed takeover of the publication, Sunkara promised to pay the writers only 70% of the back wages they were owed and give them their jobs when they were returned.
Now, writers say that Sunkara has reneged on his promise to pay their workers their wages owed for the years they spent keeping the publication alive.
“All the pious, pseudo-academic waffle in the world doesn’t really amount to a hill of beans. Our actions are what count. How we treat others is what matters” wrote George Orsby in a letter protesting the move.
Reporters told Sunkara that they were outraged that he would renege on their deal and dismiss the workers from the publication. In an email responding to the disgruntled former staff, Sunkara and newly-appointed Tribune editor Ronan Burtenshaw, disputed the contributions of the editor who kept the publication alive during its financial stresses.
“While we appreciate all of those who have contributed to Tribune over many years, the claim in this instance that their stewardship of the project in the last three years ‘made it possible’ for Jacobin to take over the magazine is entirely false,” Burtenshaw told Payday Report in a statement.
However, the employees recently disposed of by Sunkara after they agreed to take a cut in back wages owed to them, have less than kind words to say about the jet-set Socialist publisher.
“You said you tried not to become the sort of editor/proprietor you despised. My advice to you is: try harder” wrote former Tribune employee Ian Hernon.
