I'm not really sure how accurate this theory is, but it kind of makes sense to me since Newtwo didn't erase her creators' memories (unless that was changed in your AU) when she escaped and because no one in Team Rocket remembered creating the original Mewtwo, it couldn't have been them.

At the end of the film she understood that everyone has the right to belong. What goes with the theme of the movie. Her character arc compared to OG Mewtwo is looser (I have some theories about it about the problems her writing had beyond the legal issues with Shudo).

In 2016, the franchise launched a new mobile game for both Android and IOS known as Pokémon GO. Unlike the video games of Game Boy and Nintendo, players need to go outside and roam around to capture Pokémon and fight with multiple players and gym leaders. The game's theme held true to its origins, but new spins were introduced. In essence, Pokémon Go called out both young and old’s inner Ash Ketchum.

The most remarkable thing about the Pokémon world is that it's really as large as ever, even today, 25 years since the series started. Why Detective Pikachu works: Spoiler Edition

So I made a non-spoiler explanation on how Detective Pikachu manages to give so many nods and references that only fans will understand and why that is intergral to how the film is a good live-action video game movie.

The spoilers are probably the most telling sign that the film was for fans. Here are some of them:

The Mewtwo we see? It’s the same Mewtwo that escaped from Kanto. Whether this is the anime Mewtwo or game Mewtwo is unknown, but it’s still a nice nod. I’m leading towards anime Mewtwo since this Mewtwo mentions that humanity is bad, but Harry managed to prove them wrong, just like Ash did in the movie.

Ditto. Holy fuck, the Ditto. Ditto can transform into anything—and I mean anything. The anime shows that when Jessie asks a Ditto to turn into a Dratini shown in a book, but the Ditto transforms into the book. The Ditto in this film mimics humans, and keeps its beady eyes when doing so. Another interesting thing to note is the popular theory of Ditto being failed clones of Mew. Makes sense why the villain, who wants Mewtwo, would get his hands on Ditto.

The giant, island-sized Torterra make a whole lot of sense when you realize that Torterra is called the Continent Pokémon. Also, during the whole giant Torterra garden scene, Pikachu gets knocked out by a piece of the ground, ground being the only type super-effective against Electric types.

Psyduck’s psychic blast from its headache manages to damage the Greninja. Greninja is normally a Water-Dark type, Dark being immune to psychic, but its special ability, Protean, changes its type depending on the move it used. These Greninja only used Water-type moves. Considering these Greninja were enhanced with a power-upgrade, it makes sense that they would have the special ability and would take damage from psychic moves.

During the climax, Pikachu manages to use Volt Tackle on Mewtwo but gets winded after doing so, most likely referring to the recoil damage the move causes.

But the biggest nod is the integral relationship between humans and Pokémon. When Pikachu gets injured and a Bulbasaur approaches the group, Tim tries to communicate with it but Lucy explains that the Bulbasaur probably won’t be able to understand Tim. However, Tim wanted to be a Pokémon Trainer, and a Pokémon Trainers would know that Pokémon are capable of understanding humans simply beyond emotion. It would make sense for Tim to try to talk to the Bulbasaur, he knows that Pokémon are capable of understanding him. And they do understand him. The Bulbasaur knew what was going on and helped Tim.

There’s also a whole lot more than just that. Lucy is incredibly patient with her Psyduck, no matter how stressful the situation she always makes sure her ticking-time bomb is okay. The owner of the Charizard is pissed that Harry’s Pikachu managed to physically scar his Pokémon and rightfully wants a rematch for it. Mewtwo realized the special bond between Harry and Pikachu, fusing their minds so they can have a chance to reunite with Tim. During the climax everyone is trying to keep the Pokémon safe as Lucy frantically tells the citizens to prevent the Pokémon from inhaling the R-serum.

Then there’s the villain’s plan to fuse Pokémon and human minds together to achieve true harmony between the groups. The relationship between humans and Pokémon are clearly important. Hell, the entire point of Ryme City is to focus on a harmonious relationship between humans and Pokémon. You can also argue that part of the plot of the film is Tim rekindling his love for Pokémon and the shenanigans he can get into with them.

To us Pokémon fans, our relationship with our little pocket monsters is important, regardless of how we play the game. We even have a self-imposed challenge that is meant to take advantage on our relationship with our Pokémon, the Nuzlocke.

This to me, is the real reason Detective Pikachu works. It knows that Pokémon means a lot to its audience, both young and old, and the film does all it can to show that.

My apologies if July wasn’t really full of artwork this year. But luckily, this weekend, I am determined to get back on my seclude and give you guys a bunch of Wander artwork and posts too. Tonight, I decided to share two pictures from 2019. 

- When I first heard the song, Holding Out for a Hero in the second trailer for Detective Pikachu. There was no doubt I became OBSESSED! I was so obsessed with this old song that I thought it was going to be playing in the end credits after the incredible orchestra score of the Pokémon Red and Blue main theme. Truns out my theory turned out to be false and they had a different song playing afterwards. But hey, at lest I can still imagine it. Trust me, I loved drawing myself wearing Detective Pikachu’s hat. 

- Wander and the lightbulb staff have made a exciting return tonight. Say what you will about the film 9, but the logo for this movie was beyond ghostly and amazing.

Small Detective Pikachu Theory

Ryme City is a location we’ve never heard of in the games, right? At first I’d thought maybe it was in a separate universe but other regions are mentioned throughout the film, and it’s explicitly stated that Mewtwo is the same one from the first movie/games, so it must be in the same world as the other games take place. 

I think Detective Pikachu takes place in the Galar Region

(minor spoilers under the cut)

First of all, near the beginning of the movie when Tim is watching that promotional video about Ryme City, we get a shot of some kind of landmass - presumably the region the city is located in. I don’t have any pictures available right now, but the region reminded me a lot of the general shape of the Galar Region.

(The man who founded the city and his son also have British accents, but that could be a matter of coincidence.)

But a big indicator to me is actually something my parents pointed out - the environmental design. Apparently, a lot of the buildings had architecture resembling what you would find in London, some looking like they were taken straight from the real life city. The signs also looked very British to them (and they’ve both gone to Britain multiple times, they would know). 

This would also make a lot of sense from a marketing perspective. The next games releasing are Sword and Shield, and if they do reveal Ryme City as a location in sneak peaks, the hype would be huge.

Wishful Thinking: The Nintendo Cinematic Universe Part 1

The Nintendo Cinematic Universe. This an idea/joke/meme that has been thrown around ever since Nintendo in 2016 announced their plan to make movies based off their IP’s again. They have recently joined forces with Illumination Entertainment to create the upcoming Mario movie. Since then I've been thinking about how Nintendo could truly capitalize on this idea. With video game adaptations slightly getting better and better each year (with stuff like Castlevania, Detective Pikachu, Sonic Boom TV Show, etc.), I think this idea while somewhat far fetched could still be somewhat possible. Let’s talk about my crazy idea for a Nintendo Cinematic Universe.

The Main Idea:

Very similar to the MCU we will split up the films into phases. The theme of Phase 1 is “Recognizable”. If Nintendo is gonna jump start this universe, they need to bring out the big guns. Their most recognizable IP’s.

Super Mario Bros.

The first confirmed movie, the Super Mario Bros. Movie has become shrouded in mystery in terms of what the plot could be. Could it follow the tried and true of the mainline games? Or could it break expectations and take inspiration from the spin-offs like the RPG’s? With a tentative release date of 2022 we will have to wait. There are currently rumors that the story could be based of the Super Mario Adventures comics. With Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri producing, the film could be a potential hit. But again certain parts of this movie’s creative side are still unknown.

The Legend of Zelda

I’m pretty certain after the Mario movie is successful, a Zelda movie is around the corner. Though a Zelda movie done by the Illumination team would be well.... odd. Since Illumination isn’t currently known for fantasy storylines or anything with a serious tone, really. But Universal Pictures also owns Dreamworks. Which I think could do good for the Zelda IP. In turns of the target demo for a Zelda movie I think it could appeal towards pre-teens to teenagers compared to the Mario movie which would appeal to all ages but more specifically kids. The plot? Well the tried and true Zelda formula. Though I would like it if Zelda could have more of a prominent role like she does in Spirit Tracks and Breath Of The Wild.

Super Mario Bros. 2

Let’s say if the Zelda movie isn’t as successful as both Nintendo and Universal hoped. Well, another Mario movie! You have to follow up the first installment of the NCU. The plot? Uhhhh.... go NUTS! If I were to write this movie it focus on Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Toad going on some sort of adventure. Basically up the ante from the previous film. And when I say Super Mario Bros. 2, I mean the sequel to the first movie not the video game.

Metroid

This is the big one. People have been clamoring for a Metroid movie for decades at this point. There was one in development in the early to mid-2000s but nothing came of it. When you get down to it, Metroid’s themes and setting are ripe for a film adaptation. The plot could tackle Samus’s origin and her journey to become the galaxy’s most feared bounty hunter. Or the story could take place when Samus is already well established in her career, but we get flashbacks to her past. A Metroid film could go in many directions. And with Nintendo confirming in 2016 that these adaptations are primarily going to be animated, it wouldn’t be shackled to the potential limitations of live-action. A Metroid film in terms of demographic would primarily be aimed at a teenager to adult audience. Quite risky for an animated film of this type. Will an animated Metroid film make a profit? 

Donkey Kong Country

Ok, this would be interesting to see. Rounding out phase 1 of the NCU would be the leader of the bunch and the first member of the DK crew, Donkey Kong. Now DK as a character would be interesting to see carry a leading role in a movie. Let alone have a speaking part. But I think the misadventures of the DK crew would be fun enough to see as a standalone film. Think Puss and Boots or Hobbs and Shaw. DK and the gang going up against the Kremlins and King K. Rool would be a rip-snorting time. Plus, who wouldn’t want to hear the songs of the DKC trilogy performed by an live orchestra?

Where’s Pokemon?

This is an interesting question. Since currently Game Freak is in bed with Legendary Pictures to produce live-action Pokemon movies in the future after the success of Detective Pikachu. I highly doubt Game Freak would let two kinds western Pokemon movies run at the same time. What i’m saying is would Game Freak allow Illumination or Dreamworks to work on CG Pokemon movies when Legendary is making their own live-action movies? I honestly wouldn’t know. But hey, Sony and Marvel are completely okay with there being two types of Spider-Man universes going on at the same time. Who’s to say Game Freak/Nintendo wouldn’t do the same?

In Conclusion:

The primary goal of the first phase of the NCU is to make Nintendo a well known name in the film space very similar to what Marvel did with it’s phase 1. If phase 1 is a success, what lies in store for phase 2? Stay tuned to find out!

26. what movie would you want to live in?omg ok detective pikachu. like if you think about it any movie where you get magical powers theres this responsibility to save the world or like .... fantasy stuff theres a war so even if youre not one of the main characters youre still suffering the fallout of destruction. and as much as i love action films, i do not want to be the cause or a casualty of mass car pile ups, falling buildings, war zones, etc etc. BUT detective pikachu is perfect. because everyone has a partner pokemon you can hang out with and the chaos is centralized to one city, so in theory i could be somewhere else with my pokemon completely safe and reaping the benefits of the world choice. ITS PERFECT

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu Review

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was a fantastic surprise!  I’ve only seen a handful of episodes of the show and never got into the video or card games—Pokémon got big when I thought I was too old for it; basically a too cool for school teenager—but if this movie's any indication of this world, I've missed out. I absolutely loved this! 

Full Spoilers...

Detective Pikachu takes a healthy sampling of Film Noir tropes and tones, infusing the Pokémon world with mystery and intrigue. The murder mystery at play ties into Tim's (Justice Smith) search to reconnect with his father after it's too late and his first steps into both a more dangerous world and a more daring expression of himself perfectly. I really liked the added layer that despite once wanting to be a trainer, Tim had never successfully partnered with a Pokémon. Forcing him to do so upon meeting his father Harry's partner Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) tied that dashed childhood dream and his regrets about not going with his father to Ryme City or spending more time with him in general perfectly. Tim and Detective Pikachu's relationship was really well-crafted and endearing: it’s obvious they care about each other and their partnership growing pains hit classic buddy cop beats while feeling fresh and being genuinely funny. Both Smith and Reynolds were great, infusing their relationship with just the right mix of comedy, benign-yet-pointed antagonism, and true affection for one another. Smith's extremely talented and does a great job of balancing the sadder parts of Tim's story with his drive to find out what happened to his father, his initial annoyance at Pikachu, his awkwardness around the reporter, and ultimately his discovered confidence and heroism. Similarly, Reynolds hits all the right notes as a Pikachu without a memory saddled with the son of his dead partner, and the fact that he's a CGI creation doesn't prevent Reynolds from fully emoting or feeling completely real (much like his Deadpool mask disproved the "you have to see the actors' face to feel their emotions" theory about superhero films). These two were a great match and I hope we get many more mysteries with this duo!

The reveal at the end, that thanks to one of Mewtwo's (Rina Hoshino and Kotaro Watanabe) abilities Harry was not dead but had been stashed in his partner Pikachu, was a twist I didn't see coming at all! I totally bought that he had died, but the reveal that his disappearance was actually an attempt to save him didn't change the really solid drama his "death" provoked in Tim and Pikachu, nor did it ever feel like a cheap reversal. Tim and Harry still had a lot of issues to work out even after he was brought back, and it was a refreshing change of pace that even Tim's quest to get to know his father didn't change the facts of their estranged relationship. Even after everything they went through, Tim still had to make the choice to stay in Ryme City with Harry instead of going back home to his insurance job. It's not apparent the first time through the film, but Tim using his trainer knowledge to try and help Pikachu in battle was a nice role reversal putting him in the "dad" role for the father who wasn’t in his life. Pikachu's quips and barbs about Tim's lack of experience talking to women, being a detective, etc. also felt appropriately sardonic, but knowing the twist they also come off as an irreverent take on a dad trying to (embarrassingly) help his son out, which is a fun layer. Their familial relationship was very well done in general (even if we actually see very little of them interacting when Harry is fully himself). I also liked the simple fact that they were an interracial family; it's nice to see that without it being a big deal.

The third investigator in the film, Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton) was another great addition to the cast. I loved that she was totally competent as a reporter, which complimented both the Film Noir vibe really well (right down to the lighting and camera angles on her introduction) and made her an integral member of Tim and Pikachu's investigation. The fact that she was a low-level blogger at Howard Clifford’s (Bill Nighy) television news empire rather than the reporter she wanted to be added a socially relevant touch to the world in terms of how little a young professional actually makes and how they're treated. It also makes for a light shot at fake news being spouted by broadcast news, since she's the only one who wants to investigate the real issues. Maybe more than any other character, Lucy also feels like a Pokémon animated series character come to life (without ever feeling cartoonish), which makes her integral to bridging the world of the show and games and the live-action format here. She had good chemistry with Smith and I hope she gets to return in any future installments too.

I initially and briefly thought Howard Clifford might be secretly evil, but the movie did a great job of convincing me I was wrong. I believed in his attempts to create a harmonious relationship between humans and Pokémon and totally thought his son Roger (Chris Geere) was undermining his utopia plans for some nefarious purpose. So, I was taken by surprise by the twist that Roger was just a jerk, not evil. The presence of a well-placed Ditto (Suki Waterhouse) also took me completely by surprise! I remembered that Pokémon from the cartoon, but the film cleverly and briefly includes one early on to prep everyone in the audience for their existence and powers so the climactic reveal is set up and earned rather than feeling like it’s completely from left-field. Ditto using its mimicry powers to act as Howard’s human assistant Ms. Norman is not just a great way to misdirect the audience, but also a smart, subtle reflection of both the truth about Tim's dad and Pikachu and of Howard’s ultimate plan to hijack Pokémon bodies to forcibly evolve humanity. 

Howard's evolution plan to use the Pokémon to enhance himself and everyone else at the expense of the animals' autonomy was a solid evil plan. I loved that it stemmed from (and his evil was concealed by) his attempt to save himself from a degenerative disease: they cloaked his intentions in altruistic dreams of living in harmony with Pokémon really well! In fact, the only note I had about the movie was that they could've made this plan a more pointed effort to only evolve the rich or "desired" humans rather than everyone in scattershot fashion. Only wanting to steal the Pokémon's bodies and use them to enhance the prospects of the people he deemed worthy (old white wealthy people, probably) would've been a great comment on current race and class divisions in our society, but trying to forcibly evolve everyone drove the plan into more generic "crazy" territory. It still totally works, but they could've made a statement on top of their already very-entertaining plot. That’s a really minor note, though! I also initially thought it was a little convenient that Howard was not absorbed into Mewtwo like everyone else was pulled into their Pokémon (allowing Tim to get the neural interface off him and reverse the body-snatching), but that could very easily be chalked up to the mechanics of the interface and/or the Howard/Mewtwo psychic connection or the fact that Mewtwo is not a naturally-occurring Pokémon, so this plot convenience ultimately doesn't bother me.

Ryme City was very cool and, like all the best fictional worlds, was a place I’d like to visit. As a newcomer to the franchise, the Pokémon initially feel somewhat like everyday animals so the idea of living with them in a cooperative fashion seemed like kind of a weird idea, but they really sold it and how it would work. The comparisons I saw online to Who Framed Roger Rabbit were well-earned, through the mystery vibe, the lost family member aspect, and the idea of humans coexisting with animated characters (not to mention the overall quality!). The CGI was great and the interactions between humans and Pokémon felt totally natural (and for the vast majority of the time, they looked that way too; there were only one or two moments where the CGI bent the illusion a bit). 

Like me, you don’t need to be well-versed in the world of Pokémon to understand or enjoy what’s going on. I'm sure you'd get more out of the film and you'd probably catch references they included if you were a fan, but the film is plenty enjoyable and engaging even if you've never seen or played Pokémon before. Tim's introductory scene of trying to capture a Pokémon was a nice introduction to his trainer aspirations and inclusion of the central conceit of the show (and universe in general): capturing Pokémon to partner with, train, and battle. The importance of human/Pokémon connection also showed through in that scene beyond illustrating the norms of this society by making it clear that this world hinges on working together rather than going it alone (which ties into Tim and Harry’s fractured family perfectly). Despite Ryme City being a place where battles are outlawed so everyone can live in a more evolved harmony (though I wonder if that's secretly a measure to lure Pokémon there and keep them in pristine health), the film also includes an iconic battle in the underground Pokémon duels. That was a clever way to tie into the seedy Noir vibe while also giving us the first taste of live action Poké-battles from the animated series. The parade balloons were also a fun way to homage the classic, iconic look of the characters.

The writing is clever and funny, the acting is great all around, and the pacing is brisk but they know when to take a moment and let dramatic moments breathe. The music is fun and Pikachu despondently singing the show's theme song was a nice touch, but it would've been cool to hear an orchestral version of that over the climax (or the credits) too. Again, the nods to and touches of Film Noir angles and lighting were really well-done, but the movie is also completely unafraid of breaking that generally more grounded world to be big and bombastic: the film's tone is flexible enough to seamlessly accommodate both styles. I also loved how colorful the world was! The various Pokémon (and the experiments conducted on them) generated a huge variety of challenges for our trio of heroes without feeling like this was all the universe has to offer, so I'm definitely looking forward to further adventures! At the same time, I loved that this has a conclusion and could have totally worked as a solo movie. 

Without a doubt, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is one of my favorite movies of the year so far! I'm glad I caught it in theaters (even after it having been out for a while) and I can't wait to see it again on home video. If you can still find it in theaters it's definitely worth the trip, but either way you should absolutely check this out!
