There's lots of good bits in The Amelia Project (podcast), but I want to tell y'all about one in specific, where I think I can manage it without any spoilers.

So X and Y have had a lot of adventures together, and at a certain point in the podcast, they're both sharing their stories, but each to a different audience. To make things convenient, the stories are being told in the same order by both parties. How it normally happens is that say X will start introducing the story to their audience, then it'll switch to the story itself, then it goes back to X and their audience to discuss that story; then for the epilogue, we go to Y and Y's audience, where Y has just finished talking about the same adventure, and get to hear what those ones all have to say about it afterwards.

It's a great framing device, one that I think should be used more often by more writers. Not just "this is a story being told by a character", but there being MULTIPLE different instances of that same story being told, by and to different people, so we get a greater variety of possible responses.

Anyways, this particular bit starts with Y telling the story; in it, there's some introductory stuff to set up their then-current situation, then X leaves to buy a waffle, then the story happens to Y. (This isn't unusual, there's been prior bits where what we hear in the "story" segment was mostly just with one character, and the other character presumably had heard about it afterwards and so was able to tell that same story.) We finish up the story, hear how Y's audience responds to it. And then, the epilogue: X's audience says "why did you just talk about a really good waffle you'd had once".

One of these days, if I'm sufficiently bored/procrastinating, and I feel like doing enough research to not make a fool out of myself, I'm going to write something up about whether a character could be trusted with the Death Note, or to take the Ring to Mt Doom, and the differences between the two.

Like, the Death Note is very limited in what it can do. It kills people. (And controls their actions to some degree, but still ending in their deaths.) It can only "make the world a better place" if you believe the same thing is possible of an assassin's bullet (but it's so much easier to do than trying to shoot somebody). It doesn't have any will of its own; any "corruption" it causes is solely due to the nature of having the power of life and death, without being accountable to anyone else.

The Ring is different. It has a goal, and it is actively trying to accomplish that goal however it can. It promises power, even if we don't know much of what it can do other than "let you be invisible", in the same manner that we don't know what will happen if [insert disaster that hasn't yet occurred]. Plus also there's essentially a fallen angel who can influence people to varying degrees when they're around it.

Then there's the "win condition" here. For the Note, it's continuous, "do not go mad with power for however long this thing is in your possession". For the Ring, there's a very definite end goal, "take the thing to where it can be destroyed, or at least pass it to someone who can, and be willing to give it up", but also "don't be killed, and don't let it be stolen", which requires more than "just" mental fortitude.

To be trusted with the Note, you either need a rock-solid conviction that it's wrong for you personally to kill, or you need both restraint and good judgement. (Or a particular type of anxiety, that'd work too to prevent you from ever using the thing.) To be trusted with the Ring, you need to be able to withstand or reject the temptations it offers, and also be the type of person who could be relied upon to transport an object that a lot of other people very much want to take for themselves. (If we're doing a "relay" type of thing to get to Mt Doom, then that second criterion gets relaxed a bit, since you only need to hide/defend/carry it for a shorter distance; but you still need to be able to give it up.)

For today's Mermay I mermified the original box art for DOOM. I decided it didn't make sense for merms to use firearms -- "fire" is right there in the name, which... doesn't really play well with water, so that wouldn't have developed along familiar lines -- so I replaced one of Doomguy's guns with a spear, and the other with magic solely because that was simpler than figuring out a different system for projectile launchers plus what that would look like.

We all know Hinata loved Naruto FROM THE BEGINNING. How do we know it? Well...

She was blushing when she saw him!

She always thought he was the best and the coolest!

She was smiling at Naruto hugging Sakura, after Pain fight because she just wants him to be happy! That's how REAL love works!

She tried to protect him AT ALL COST!

Everyone had known she loves Naruto!

She EVEN SAID IT DIRECTLY!

LIKE THAT WAS OBVIOUS. We know ALL that. 🙄

BUT

Naruto.... HAS NEVER LOVED SAKURA. NEVER. IT WAS CLEARLY A CRUSH, HE NEVER DID THINGS THAT HINATA DID, COME ON. ONE IS CLEARLY LOVE AND THE OTHER ONE IS BARELY A CRUSH.

Like:

1) He clearly NEVER blushed around her

Not even once.

And even IF (but we all know he didn't) it wouldn't be in Shippuuden, then he was 100% over that "CRUSH"

2) He NEVER thought she was cool

Or even cute

3) Obviously Naruto has NEVER smiled at Sakura hugging Sasuke because NaruSaku was a crush AT BEST, so he never wanted her to be happy with someone else, that's would be LOVE and Naruto never loved her

4) And we obviously know he NEVER cared to protect her by jumping at a 100% stronger opponent... like never happened

5) Noone, not even once, thought Naruto loved Sakura, especially not because Naruto said it

6) And at last, he never said it, because if he did we wouldn't talk about it, right?

LIKE COME ON, ITS OBVIOUS. One is love and the other one is "just a crush"...
