Long rainy days of the typhoon season means it’s also time for our local SOUPer heroes. Here are 6 soup suggestions to help fight colds, wet commutes, or to help melt the clouds away in our own minds.
Bisaya halang-halang brings spice, lemongrass, and coconut milk to our lives. Batsoy from Iloilo and Kinalas from Bicol brings us rich, meaty, noodle soups. Tiyula itum from Tausug and Muslim cooks brings us unique flavors from Southern Mindanao, while Luzon’s Tinola and Sinigang make a vegetable-rich soup duo, full of varying shades of green and spice. The names of these soups are illustrated with their names either in Badlit from the Visayas, Basahan from Bicol, or Tagalog Baybayin.
Wherever you are never forget: rain or shine, its sabaw time.

i feel like the idea of seasoning food is doing some weird backwards thing because I've seen a couple times people coming for dishes like hainanese chicken rice because it looks bland and soggy w ppl not understanding like the way its made....
like the point of this was to decolonize the way you view food but now it's circling to ethnic food is only acceptable if it fits the palatable way its supposed to look

Telesforo NO-
It drives me mad why they keep the locket so much ;-; that they made Juli a dang servant (that the family/Tatang Selo does not want to do)
This is also the chapter of: Juliana Slander and well... Why are they arresting Tatang Selo?
Since i cannot understand much.... Simoun selling at Tales' den is well... just why?
Tumblr media
This is just... foolish. Unless he is framed.
MY FRIEND I AM SO SORRY FOR ANSWERING SO LATE OMG ;-; just went through a busy month as i am about to graduate in my current year and had no time to pop back in here huhu but i've gathered my 2 brain cells now except whatever i wrote here isn't coherent at all
also first off the fact that this chapter is called merry christmas...u wanna beat up rizal w/me
aaaaaa i was screaming at simoun the entire damn chapter!! injustice really drives people to achieve justice and/or retribution in ways they see fit, and to achieve it with fury and vengeance is what simoun wanted to happen for all filipinos which is so fookin dumb like !! YOU BETTER STOP. and to think i had classmates before who cheered him on for exploiting the unprivileged and the oppressed like this bc "haha the indios' rebellion go brrr" but shits on activists and people who hold leftist political ideologies now by red-tagging them,,,, wild. like look around!! see what state we are in right now for people to be desparate enough to rebel and oppose the clowns, murderers, and the thieves in power. WILD.
juli's servitude still makes my heart hurt even now too :( it's just all so fucking cruel for all of them involved. selo just loves her granddaughter so much it breaks his heart enough to want death over seeing juli suffer being a servant instead of being the rich maiden, comfortable and well, that he had envisioned and wanted her to be…juli just loves her father so much that she tried all the plans and ideas she was offered just to earn money…juli just also loves basilio so much that she thinks she wouldn't be good enough for him but is at least comforted by the thought that she didn't sell the locket that he gave her as a sign of her loyalty….crying in the club rn. i understand why it's so frustrating at a logical standpoint tho because selling the locket would really really help them & basilio would give 0 fucks about the locket as long as juli and her family would be safe and well arrghhh I FEEL SO FRUSTRATED OVER IT AS WELL
juli slander INDEED literally she deserves so much better!! I WILL FIGHT ALL THE FUCKING FRIARS FOR HER
(another thing: do you think rizal forgot about sinang being really close friends with maria in the noli LMAOO bc the way he wrote sinang in this chapter has me raising eyebrows like sir. she was mc's cousin & bestie. we know it's been 13 years but come on…)
and they were supposed to arrest tales, as tales did commit murder but since he wasn't to be found they arrested tatang selo. (also Tales wasn't framed :( he intentionally left a trace behind because, well, vengeance. it's a sign and a threat to the authorities. :') )
i literally do not think there was any law out there at that time that states that they'd arrest another family member if the one who committed a crime wasn't present?? i mean i know like it was a colonization thing and the filipinos were heavily, heavily oppressed but i was thinking about if there were still any laws involved in this that i don't know about. does this make sense.
though granted the only thing we learned at school about laws in the spanish colonization era was the polo y servicio & nothing else, and to dive into the criminal laws in the Philippines in the 1800s at 12 AM is very tempting but i can't because i don't have the brain cells for it. i'm so sorry 😭 but even if that was validated by the law - which grants executions anyway?? actually??? and the system was GREATLY unjust and unfair towards Filipinos??? why is this mind-boggling sorry i'm very stupid HGSHGSHGAH - that was still unjust, tyrannic bullshit. and i wanna fucking fight simoun for being delighted at all literally fuck him
ANYWAY 😭 Simoun sold jewels there because that was the disguise he took on when he arrived in the country - he's a rich jeweler dude who tagged along to the Philippines because he's the Captain-General's closest friend (and the one who influences him to do bad shit, like what he details in ch7), now he's just. frolicking around. selling his stupid jewels when he knows most filipinos literally cannot afford his trinkets. a taunting figure of wealth and power just fucking shit up in the background

Tinola - it’s a Filipino soup with chicken, onions, garlic, ginger, chayote, and chilli leaves (traditional) but those are difficult to get, so I use spinach. It’s salted with fish sauce, and it it’s delicious.

Bela Dimitrescu (Resident Lover) Headcanons:
------------------------------------------------------
Requested? ❌
"Pero bakit ba, ang layo mo?"
"But why is it, that you're so far away?"
Summary: Headcanons about Bela Dimitrescu (+ With MC Romance route, this post contains Filipino Pop Culture snippets and Tagalog words but translations are provided at the Author's Notes section at the end of the fic!)
Warnings: Minor Angst, Miranda (Need I say more?)
Genre: Fluff, Headcanons, Minor Angst
Resident Lover Masterlist
-----------------------٩(◕‿◕。)۶----------------------
Tumblr media
Newly Cursed:
Felt so lost when Miranda first cursed her.
Couldn't figure out if she was scared or angry that there was no longer love or interest for the things and people she used to feel deeply for.
It turned into obsession instead.
Sometimes she'd catch herself zoning out, how could she not just stop functioning every now and then when she no longer feels?
Overtime she stopped zoning out, functioning on full autopilot instead.
Cut off her sisters due to not knowing how she'd look them in the eye and have them catch her not feeling anything for them anymore.
She may no longer be able to feel, but she still doesn't want to hurt her sisters.
Ends up obsessed with taking down Miranda because she sees it as a way to make up to her family for cutting them off.
Curse Lifted:
The first thing she does on her own is to sit underneath a tree's shade to just feel the gentle breeze.
She cries silently, not knowing how it was possible to miss such a common experience in human life.
She goes for a jog on a day when it's sunny and she's free. Pushing herself to her limits until her vision swims due to exertion.
She lies down on the grass for a moment and laughs, carefree as the sun shines down on her. Letting the heat draw out more sweat from her and simply just basking in how she's able to feel it now.
Bela stands under light rains, never once passing up the chance to feel the small pitter patters of water on her skin. She smiles with glee every single time.
MC Romance:
While cursed, she definitely gives off "Rhodessa - Kisame" vibes.
Bela started to theorise that she was falling for MC when she brought them chicken soup.
It didn't slip her notice that MC tried to steer the conversation towards her mundane life.
Not her accomplishments, not her riches, not her connections- Just her and what's in her mind.
Looks like she takes the lead in their relationship, but actually discreetly let's MC make the decisions.
Bela is a sucker for MC's chicken tinola.
MC taught her a bit about Filipino pop culture.
She may not have perfected the language yet, but she definitely nailed the:
"Science tells us that our genetic imprint predetermines your life, your fate, your choices. Pinanganak kang bobo, lalaki kang bobo, mamamatay kang bobo." (Translation is in the author's notes below.)
Bela also adopted the habit of saying "Bwisit" whenever she gets mildly frustrated;
And "Putangina" whenever she gets very frustrated.
She loves how those words just sound satisfyingly crunchy.
Likes "Cup of Joe"
Learned Tagalog to understand what the lyrics say.
Once the loop is broken and she remembers all of the things her and MC had done across all past loops, she coins "Cup of Joe - Ikaw Pa Rin" as her favorite song.
MC is thankful that Bela doesn't remember the times in the loops when she turned into a Zombie. They have sworn to take those memories to the grave, unwilling to subject to Bela to it.
Whenever Bela gets flustered by MC doing little romantic things for her, she'd try to downplay her swooning by raising an eyebrow and telling MC "Bading, bading- Bakla, bakla!"
Bela is able to sing Tagalog songs she loves without an English accent but whenever she speaks Tagalog normally, the English accent always bleeds in.
MC always smiles, finding it absolutely adorable.
MC taught Bela how to eat a chicken wing by removing the lower joint so that it's easier to take the meat off.
On her first attempt, she somehow choked on one of the wing bones.
Bela has forbidden MC from letting literally anyone other than the two of them know.
Daniela knows this though, and she's waiting for the right time to use the story as blackmail.
(Y'all CANNOT convince me na hindi chismosa si MC sa mga tamang tao.)
Once saw someone flirt with MC on Christmas season.
Went right up to MC, placed her arm around their shoulder and told them in the sweetest tone she could muster that if the person doesn't back off, she'll ensure that "Sasama siya sa kwitis papuntang langit."
----------------------٩(◕‿◕。)۶-----------------------
01-11 wished for more instances of the game reinforcing the canonical fact that MC is a Filipino, but understands why the Game Devs didn't because it can break immersion in gameplay for non-Filipino players. But if any non-Filos are interested then 01-11 encourages you to look up Gen Z Filipino culture because rest assured- 01-11's people are hilariously unhinged on a different level.
01-11 wishes everyone a Happy New Year. This is a gift to every fellow Resident Lover players like 01-11, and for every Bela simp as well! 01-11 encourages everyone to download Resident Lover. It is completely free, and the game devs have an account here on Tumblr (@resident-lover) with complete lore guides. The way each story line is written in 01-11's correct opinion: Will not ever disappoint.
Filipino Phrases - Translations:
Pinanganak kang bobo, lalaki kang bobo, mamamatay kang bobo. - You were born stupid, you'll grow up stupid, and you'll die stupid.
Bwisit, Putangina - Tagalog Curse words.
Sasama siya sa kwitis papuntang langit - I'll send them up the sky alongside the fireworks.
Bading, bading, bakla, bakla! - Gay, gay, gay, you're gay! (Common teasing mechanic for gay friends amongst Filipinos.)
Y'all cannot convince me na hindi chismosa si MC sa tamang tao. - Y'all cannot convince me that MC isn't a gossip with the right people.

i swore i submitted a hc for filipino-japanese shinonomes...they are my everything. akito is really good at dancing to budots and sometimes ena puts on corny filipino romcoms on as background music when drawing (and gets mad at them, frequently, for how stupid they are). akito's favorite filipino food is kare-kare, and ena's is tinola. ena's hair is naturally wavy because of her mom's genes but it's so short that her curl pattern doesn't show much. akito unironically identified as swagapino for a minute.

Tinola For Lunch (Filipino Chicken Ginger Soup/stew)
Tumblr media
Today I cooked one of my brother’s most favorite dishes. I can basically cook this without a recipe now since I cook it quite a lot in my household. This time however, my mama asked if I could add some pechay (kinda like bokchoy? Or is that different?) to the dish. Tinola doesn’t normally have pechay in it, usually just chicken, zayote, and malunggay leaves(moringa) with a ginger based broth but since my mom wanted some, I added it in.
Cooking Tinola becomes a family activity in, I think, most filipino households since picking off every piece of malunggay leaf is a bit tedious so everybody helps out. While picking out malunggay leaves me, my siblings, and my mother all sat together on the table and it turns into a family bonding moment, chatting about our day, my mom reprimanding my brother for doing a sloppy job, and my little sister yapping about.
I also made homemade calamansi iced tea to drink with it for everyone. Just made a 1 liter pitcher’s worth of regular tea and added a generous amount of sugar then I added the juice of more than a doezen calamansi. Then you drink it with ice or leave it in the fridge for a couple of hours. It’s so refreshing and delicious. I get a great sense of satisfaction whenever my family constantly asks me to make something I’ve made since it meant they liked it so much and my homemade Iced tea is one of them. As well as my brother who lights up when he knows I am cooking Tinola, adobo, or soy garlic chicken. Though he always say “okay lang. (It tastes alright)” with an expressionless face, the way he eats more servings than usual and the way his face lights up when I tell him what I’m cooking is a clear indication that deep down he really liked it, he just can’t praise me directly since that won’t be in accordance to the sibling etiquette code 😂
I’m not a good cook by any means but seeing my family enjoy what I cook makes my heart warm and fuzzy inside.

I wish I could stream-of-consciousness about being Filipino, but I just don't do stream-of-consciousness blogging.
I wonder which face to use to talk about being Filipino since this isn't Milgram-related. I guess I'll post on main and then reblog it.
Compilation of me screaming "I'm Filipino!":
Writing a story where the protagonist uses a spoon and fork ("Blind Style")
Using "Ate" and "Kuya" in my comic and stories. And in the name of the file I made when I was writing my fic on my sibling's laptop (ate_fic_dont_touch.rtf)
Instantly reacting to iconic Filipino foods like ube and adobo
(Side note, but I've been thinking of talking about books that I've read lately. Mostly music stuff, but there's this series of murder mystery books called the "Tita Rosie's Kitchen Mysteries". The writing is... fine.)
Other stuff below the cut. I might add stuff later.
My favorite dish is sinigang. Other staple dishes are tinola, nilaga, mongo, adobo... My dad's favorite is karekare, but I hate that.
I am 1/8th Ilocano, but that doesn't really count for anything when my great-grandmother was born in Manila.
I can follow casual conversations, but ask me to speak and I won't be able to string my learned vocabulary and grammar together. I usually throw single Tagalog words into English sentences.
Sample phrase: "Tatlong pusa sa mesa." Three cats on the table. Last year, my cousins' cats were really naughty and all got on the table when nobody was looking.
I can sing nursery rhymes. ("Ako ay may lobo, lumipad sa langit...")
My screen name is Philyra K. Illagan. If I could change it today, I'd be "Philomena" instead. But Philyra is one of my oldest characters, so I just made it so her paternal grandmother is Philomena, and Philyra's name is a portmanteau of that and her mother's name, Analira. I don't know how prevalent portmanteaus are in the Philippines, but my fictional world has a whole family tree branch of portmanteaus.
I've had a concept of a story called "The 8th Grade Wars" since I was in 7th grade. It has evolved over the years, but one constant is the focus on the protagonist's Filipino identity. I've flipped my family tree, so she has what I think is an Ilocano surname. (I originally had her know Tagalog and Cebuano, but now that I know I'm a little bit Ilocano, I'll replace Cebuano with Ilocano)

INTRODUCTION: Max Dugal
A/N: special thanks to @thehollowwriter for allowing me to make this oc!! Hope you like him! 😊😊😊
Name: Max Dugal
Species: sunshine chromis mer
Age: 9years old
Family Relations/ Close friends:
Unnamed Aunt (Blaze's mother)
Unnamed Father (Alive)
Unnamed Mother (Deceased)
Personality: Mischievous and kinda annoying if you look at him a bit more. Adventure loving and reckless most of the time; surprisingly though, if the time calls for it- he can think really well for his age.
Likes: following Blaze around the school when he gets permission to roam the campus, 2 Filipino dishes he came across once called Adobo and Tinola
Dislikes: Finn, the weird French guy with the fedora hat-
Description: Nicknamed 'Mini Blaze' and 'Blaze 2.0', Max looks up to his older cousin who he's really close to.
Max can be a bit clingy to people he likes but he never steps the boundaries.
Looks: (I wanted to add a little something since cousins don't really looks alike)
Light red hair that usually tied up to a short loose ponytail, dark brown skin and shining amber eyes
(I know nothing about Marine biology, sorry if I made mistakes!)
Random character trivia:
Blaze kinda acts a bit more friendly to others when Max is around, wouldn't want the little rascal to snitch to his dad
Surprisingly, Max doesn't tell his parents.
Max, being the child he is, will believe anything Blaze tells him. Blaze could tell him he saved the whole entire school and Max would believe him.
Max never actually interacted with Finn but gets the feeling he's dangerous (especially since Finn literally bit into Blaze's arm)
As stated, He doesn't like Finn.
(this is probably one of my fav ones yet. I really hope to use Max in future skits! Thank you again, @thehollowwriter for the permission to make Max!)

do your filipino muses have a favorite filipino / culturally significant culinary dish ? if so, what is it and why do they like it ? do they have key or strong memories associated with it ?
ASK ME ABOUT MY FILIPINO MUSES!
Rafael loves Sinigang and Adobo, as Lacey always cooks these dishes for him. He wouldn't try to cook these meals himself because he thinks he isn't the best cook, but he would try because he's that determined. He also has some positive memories on both of these dishes, especially Sinigang because Sinigang is the one he usually eats on rainy days.
For Penelope, she's a picky eater because she used to be a sickly one. Her servants were the ones who cook her meals. She would mostly eat vegetable dishes despite she didn't like them at first, but she had gotten used to it after eating them for so many years up to this day. Her top faves are Ginisang Monggo and Ampalaya.
For Krystal, growing up in the States, she barely eats Filipino dishes. She mostly eats burgers, fries, steak, fried chicken and you can barely see her eating healthy foods even after her rehab. She only eats healthy foods and exercise whenever she feels like it, despite being a superhero.
For Nerissa, she never tried any of the Filipino foods because her meals had been different when was locked up in the lab facility for experimentations. She is also allergic to seafood so she never tried any seafood dishes and stick to vegetable dishes. She only tried Tinola once, but she won't mind eating more just to try them.
For Hallie-Rose, her mother was the one who cooks Filipino dishes. Her mother's Dinuguan is her favourite, and she won't eat any Dinuguan dishes unless her mother cooks it because she really enjoyed it. She would also eat these with rice cakes as snacks.

Malunggay Magic: Unveiling the Power of the Philippines' Miracle Tree
Malunggay, also known as Moringa Oleifera, is a versatile plant widely cultivated in the Phippines for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. It is often called the "miracle tree" due to its high nutrient content and numerous used. Here's an overview of Malunggay and its significance in the Philippines:
Malunggay leaves are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They contain high levels of Vit. C, vitamin A, calcium, potassium, and iron. The plant also contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a good source of protein for vegetarians and vegans.
In the Philippines, malunggay is commonly used in various dishes. The leaves are often added to soups, stews, and broths, such as "tinola" a popular chicken soup. In Ilocos, we usually cooked into "inabraw" or "dinendeng" and used"bagoong" as a flavoring agent and mix with fried fish to add flavor.
Malunggay is also used in vegetable dishes like " "ginisang malunggay" ( sauteed malunggay), and can be blended into smoothies or used to make herbal tea.
The seeds can be eaten like peas or pressed to extract oil which is used for cooking and as traditional medicine.
The health benefits of Malunggay include:
. Anti- infiammatory properties: The plant contains compounds that may help reduce inflammation.
. Antioxidant effects: Malunggay is rich in antioxidants, which may help combat oxidative stress and support overall health.
. Immune sustem support: Its high Vit. C content can boost the immune system.
. Lowering cholesterol: Some studios suggest that malunggay may help reduce cholesterol levels.
. In traditional medicine, it is used to treat various ailments including digestive issues and respiratory conditions.
Malunggay is a hardy plant that grows well in tropical climates making it an eccellent crop for sustainable agricuture. It requires minimal water and can thrive in poor soil conditions.
The plant is also known for its ability to purify water. Its seeds contain coagulant properties, which can help remove impurities from water.
