What color is your bedspread? Blue and yellow. Pick up the nearest book to you, turn to page 25 and read the first sentence. I’m on the rooftop and there isn’t a book anywhere near me at the moment. How many candles are in the room you are in? No candles, just two faint beams coming from our rooftop lights. What was your first word when you were a baby? My parents didn’t give much thought to stuff like that so they didn’t keep track of my first word, whatever it was. It was most likely either mommy or daddy though. How old were you in 1996? I was...somewhere in the universe, floating around lmao.
How old will you be in 2016? I turned 18 in 2016. How long until your birthday? A little less than three months before I turn 22. How many siblings do you have? Two.  Are they older or younger than you? My sister is two years younger, my brother is five years younger. Are your grandparents still alive? I have three out of four. I lost my maternal grandfather in 2015. How many orange objects are there in the room you are in? The lights we have on our rooftop emit a yellow-orange hue.   Have you ever run a stoplight? Never. I’ve seen enough car crash videos to know what could possibly happen if I was that impatient/if I drove too fast to brake. Do you have any children? Nope. Maybe by the end of the decade. Saying that and knowing that it isn’t 100% bullshit feels WILD. How was your first kiss? It was mostly her. I was too overwhelmed and shaking too much to remember. That whole time I was just in disbelief that I was already having my first kiss lol. Have you completed high school yet? Yeah, almost four years ago. I’m about to complete university/college this year. Do you have any relatives in the military currently? As far as I know, no. The only person I know who’s in the military is Angela’s uncle, who she’s told me about but we’ve never met each other. I also know Kate’s brother is attending military school instead of attending a ~traditional academic university, so to speak. Who got married at the last wedding you went to? Oh my, the last wedding I was in was in 2007, and it was between my uncle (my mom’s youngest brother) and my now-aunt. The new batch of weddings I’m going to be invited to now is definitely gonna be my friends’ and I’m STOKED. What time did you get up today? I first woke up at 6 AM, but I wanted to sleep in so I officially got up at around 9. When was the last time you stayed up all night? I haven’t had an all-nighter in around three years, but I did stay up until 4 AM partying with my friends a couple of months ago. We got back to Rita’s place by 5 AM, but I guess this still kinda counts as staying up all night. How long have you had a myspace, facebook, or whatever you use? I’ve had a Facebook since 2013 (I only made one since my English teacher in freshman year required us to make an account, but I technically wasn’t allowed by my parents so I had to sign up in secret). I made a Twitter three years before that, because it was a website that my parents didn’t know about yet so it was easier to sneak in and make an account for it. Who was the last person of the opposite sex you hung out with? My cousin, Jereth. We exchanged stories and played the Switch while waiting for 2020 to hit. Person of the same sex? Gabie. She came over last Friday. What color are your eyes? They are dark brown but appear to be black most days. Do you like them? Sure, it’s not like Filipinos have a choice lolol. Have you ever had braces? Yes, I had them for a year and a half in high school. I eventually lost my retainers and never got to buy another set, so everything that the braces did was to no avail since my teeth just went back to how they looked like pre-braces. :( Turn on your mp3, cd player, radio, etc. What song is playing? Khalid’s Talk just started playing on my Spotify. What was the last thing you drank? My second cup of barako coffee is keeping me company up on the rooftop right now.
Are you better at math or art? Math. I never accomplished anything presentable in art classes. Science or History? Oooooh, ya got me. I love both, but nothing replaces my love for history. Who was your 4th grade teacher? Ms. Belen, who is actually Satan in a middle-aged woman’s body. I won’t deny that I’ve wished for her death several times; she had her favorites and made her non-favorites know that she hated them. She was just that awful. Who was your best friend in 7th grade? Gabie! We actually met in the seventh grade and she’s been my best friend ever since then. Where did you go to pre-school, if you went at all? I went to the same school from preschool to high school, which we’ll hide under the name AA. We don’t have schools divided into primary, secondary, high school and whatever else y’all have in America. Who was the last person to call you? It was my mom. We went to the mall so I can spend time in Starbucks while she was looking for fancy china (we were going to have guests the next day), and she called to tell me she was gonna drive to another mall cos she couldn’t find any good plates in the mall we were currently in.
Did you smile in your driver's license picture? Yes. They told me I was allowed to smile, so I gave a hearty grin. Apparently that’s an unusual thing to do cos most people just give a closed-mouth smile or don’t smile at all, and the people at the LTO were very amused when my license was finally printed out hahaha. Do you have a job? Not yet, but that’s my goal by the end of the year. AHHHHHHHH WILD What is your favorite smell? Curry being cooked or cookies being baked. What's your favorite brand of gum? Bazooka is classic bubblegum flavor, so I’ll go with that. Have you ever dated someone & then dated their sibling? Nope. I think I’d find that super awkward, especially in my case because I see Gab’s sisters as my little sisters too lol. Who was your crush in 5th grade? My science teacher lmaoooo. We don’t talk about that era. Who was your first bf/gf? Gab. What color is the shirt you are wearing? Brown and black. What do you think of the 1980's? Pop music, big hair, Madonna, Michael Jackson. Have you ever dated someone more than 2 years older than you? I haven’t. How about 2 years younger? Nope. I’ve only dated one person and they’re the same age as me, so I don’t really know how I feel about age gaps in relationships. What brand of shampoo do you use? Dove. How long is your hair? It’s super long now that I hadn’t had it cut AT ALL in 2019. I want to have it long for my grad pic shoot so I’m probably not having it trimmed until February. If I lean my head a bit back, it already reaches my hips. If you could change one thing about yourself physically, what would it be? I’d have my teeth fixed. Is there a box of tissues in the room you are in right now? Nope, I’m out in the rooftop and there’s no reason to keep tissue in here lol. What time is it? 10:27 PM. Is their anything living (plant, animal, etc) in your room right now? We have plants on each corner of the rooftop. What color are the walls in your kitchen? White. All our walls are white, except for my brother’s bedroom which used to be the balcony until we had it renovated. His walls are creamish. Have you ever had a car accident? Mild ones. I’ve never been in a major crash where a car was totally destroyed or where someone was hurt. Do you have any major plans for today? There’s like half an hour left before the day officially ends, so I think I’m good. What kind of deoderant do you use? A...normal one? If you mean brands, I have a Dove one. What color is your toothbrush? Maroon and white. Do you own a digital camera? Nope. I stopped using those around seven or eight years ago. How old is the cellphone you have right now? It’s almost two years old. What are your initials, using the last letter of each of your names? NELZ. Do you know anyone named Tyler? I know a high school classmate’s stepbrother is named Tyler, but I don’t know anyone personally with that name. How about Reese? Katreen’s younger sister is named Reese. Diana? No. I know several Diannes, though. Shelby? That’s a no for me. Have you ever kissed someone who's name started with "C"? Negative. How about "L"? Also no. "E"? I haven’t. "B"? Andddddd nope. Are both your parents still living? Yep. What was the last thing you cooked? Nothing. How many times have you moved in your life? That I remember? Two. Do you live within 20 miles of your birthplace? Yeah, I think Manila counts as being pretty close to where I am now. Can you do a handstand? I can’t. I tried many times as a kid though (and hurt myself several times in the process). Is it after 11am? Well after, in fact. What day is it? Thursday, but it’s soon going to turn to Friday. What's the longest time you've ever spent on the phone? I was once on a Viber call for around eight hours straight with Gab back in like the early months of our relationship. That was insane. We never did it again after that lolol. How many pairs of brown shoes do you own? Just the one pair of brown heels. Are you on any prescribed medications? Nopes. What was the date 2 weeks ago from today? December 19th. If you aren't already married, do you expect to be married within 5 years? No. I’m giving myself between 7-10 years. How about 2 years? That’s an even bigger no. How many funerals have you been to in your lifetime? I’ve never been to a funeral, just wakes. I don’t think I’d like funerals, so I want to stay as unaware as I am now. Have you ever been far away from home on your birthday? Yeah. I was in Batangas for my 20th. I also went on a cruise around East Asia for my 18th birthday, but I was back in the Philippines by the day of my actual birthday. The cruise took place in the days leading up to it. Have you ever had a pet fish? Yes. My first pets were goldfish. Do you have any tattoos? Nope. Would you ever or do you have a nose piercing? Probably not. I wanted one as a teenager though. If you only had 30 days to live, what would you do? That’s pretty dark, but uhhhhhhhh I guess I’d spend all my money, party as much as I want, drink as much as I want, look for new owner/s for my dog, drive as far as I can, spend most of the time with my girlfriend.

How Spicy can Thailand get?
As we all know, Thailand is most known for its skincare products, cosmetics, and everything in the world of beauty and fashion. But have you ever tried their Pad Thai? Nam pla prik? Tom Yum Goong? Thai Milk Tea?
The list is endless when it comes to Thai Foods! For us Filipinos, though it's uncommon for us to see places or restaurants that serve the best and cheapest Thai dishes, I guarantee you that you will definitely like their delicacies from dipping sauces, desserts, grilled meats, and everything in between! Nope, this is not advertised! Just stating facts.
Apparently, Filipino food is frequently contrasted over Thai Food because Thai people prefer spicy food than Filipinos. Most of their food is spicy. Some are not a huge fan of spicy food but I LIVE FOR SPICY FOODS. Aside from their foods, like us Filipinos, Rice is life! They pair anything with rice even with mangoes. The infamous 'Mango Sticky Rice' is addictive. You can totally binge on it after having a rough day from your 9-to-5 day job. This trip is the most fun so far since this is the first time that I've ridden on a plane and visited outside the country. We've tried the local eatery and shops which is uncommon for a first-time tourist like me. Personally, I'd rather go to hidden gem places and eat local foods than spend my vacation in a hotel.
So here's Day1:
I've landed from Manila to Thailand from the Airport in less than 2 hours only! Can you imagine that? The travel hour I've spent is less than the travel time I've been spending during college days which takes 3-4 hours daily! So since I landed late at night, I just ate something from 7-11 which is around the corner from the place we're staying.
And I'm not kidding, I can live forever eating 711 every day! Their food is such a bomb! From appetizers to desserts. It feels like whenever you eat something and take your first bite, I feel like they've invested so many herbs and spices that's why it's so flavorful. Here's the quick-to-go snack that I'm addicted to. I always make sure to bring it wherever and packed like 2-3 packs every time we go out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 2:
This is where the fun begins! Since my friend had a local best friend, she drove us to this zoo where we watched the Crocodile show and Elephant Show. Being an earth sign and an animal lover since birth - I cannot bear the fact that I'm watching these animals being used for entertainment purposes. So to stop and avoid bawling while watching - I stepped out and went for an ice cream. Their desserts are so good! I don't have a sweet tooth so when it comes to desserts, I prefer sweets with a pinch of creaminess and milkiness on it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On our way to the night market, we ate at this local eatery where they serve noodles served with chicken broth soup. It's so good and I feel like they've been boiling the soup for days. Imagine the thick broth and the spices and herbs they've placed on that soup? It's beyond magical. They recommended trying their Jasmine Iced tea which of course I tried and it's new to my palate but it was so refreshing and clears out my taste buds from yesterday's meal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until we came at the night market. Sadly, we only went there for dinner and bought something for like an hour or two since it's raining hard. Good thing we wore sneakers because I'm telling you, in Thailand, you will use your feet and nothing but the feet to go places! Unlike here in Manila, you'll be able to call a cab or Tricycle even if it's just two blocks away. Public Transportation in Thailand is exhausting since their buses are scheduled and have their own destination depending on the number from the front side of the bus.
Day 3:
It's our last day in Thailand! Yes, you've read it right. I only spent 3 good days there since I'll work in the office the next day. Time flies so fast. Before we head to the airport, we tried shopping at their mall. Their malls were the same as ours in Binondo, Divisoria, and Mall of Asia. It's crowded because there are a lot of items on sale! Can you believe that? Even with their food, you can ask for a taste test before buying it! Even their milk tea or any powdered beverages. It's quite good to be honest since you can try it out before purchasing it which is a nice move.
Tumblr media
On our way to the airport, we almost missed our flight! The traffic was insane but I expected it before then since we head out to the airport on a rush hour. Imagine going out around 5pm-6pm and you'll walk along with all of their office workers, students, and everybody in their place! It's fun running at the airport and this is so far the first and most memorable out-of-the-country trip I've ever had.
I learned a lot and I want to see more! You can never go wrong with traveling anywhere! Aside from the people's smiles and food, you will appreciate how amazing every culture per country is.

New Bombay Royale
Have you tried Indian food? I really do, although I must admit I don’t eat it enough here in Southeast Asia. While you may find Indian food or Indian-inspired dishes in places like Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, it’s not popular at all here in the Philippines, where I’m living. Quite possibly, it could be because there isn’t a large Indian immigrant population here. Then again, there ain’t a lot of Italians, but pizza places are on every corner. More likely, Indian food isn’t viable in the Philippines because it’s just too damn healthy (India has the largest number of vegetarians in the world), while the Philippines is extremely averse to anything like vegetables or even brown rice. (If it’s not deep fried, covered in sugar, and soaked in oil, they won’t eat it!)
But I have sampled real authentic Indian cuisine from several places in the world, including, most notably, India. I spent a month there a few years back and loved the super healthy seafood, vegetarian dishes, and abundant fresh fruitin the southern province of Kerala. However, my experience in the northern city of New Delhi wasn’t as enjoyable, as I got insanely sick off of some raita (a yogurt sauce) that probably wasn’t properly refrigerated or handled. Needless to say, on my trip to the Taj Mahal I was only thinking about the nearest commode.
But I’ve had amazing experiences with Indian food in the U.S., too, as my great friend MandipDhami in Sacramento took me to his mother’s Indian restaurant often, and the Dhami fam (some of the nicest and hardest working people in the world!) would often have me over their house for dinner. In fact, his mom knew I was a bachelor and didn’t cook for myself too much, so she’d pack up a huge box of assorted Indian food and give it to me every time I left, as it lasted me most of the week.
So, it was notable when I spotted New Bombay Royale restaurant here in the Venice Grand Canal Mall in the McKinley Hill area of Manila where I’m living. It’s actually hard to miss, as it’s a massive establishment, consuming the space usually taken up by three or even four other restaurants here in the mall. The windows are formed like massive Taj Mahal temple tops, interspersed with ornate lace-like ironwork.
Inside, they have a combination of comfortable modern wooden table and plush booths, intricate traditional lamps hanging overhead to give it true Indian flare, and melodic and mysterious Indian and Arabic music playing. (I think they encompass some Arabic food and motifs here.)
The menu is expansive, and they do offer a wide variety of vegetarian dishes, as well as advertising Halal food.
I opted for the chicken tikka masala, which was reasonably priced at 350 Pesos ($7), but disappointed that it didn’t come with rice or any sides like vegetables, etc. You don’t even get naan bread or any of the nice Indian appetizers that usually always come free at most Indian places. Likewise, when I tried to order rice, their only options were Filipino white rice (very uninspiring) or true Indian saffron rice, but that only came in a double order and ran around $5 – a fortune just for rice. But the sympathetic waitress was nice enough to say she’d include a small side dish of vegetables with my dinner.
The final verdict? The portions are pretty small – coming in a cereal-sized bowl, and the dish of vegetables was just a random bowl of shredded cabbage with four or five raw red onions mixed in – I’m not joking!
Although to be fair, I will say that the chicken dish was good, with rich tomato sauce and just the right amount of spices – enough to bring me back here again (and since it’s so close) to sample more Indian cuisine on their menu.

My First Visit to Manila and My First Two Weeks in The Philippines
I arrived in the Philippines for my first visit to Manila just about two weeks ago after a flight from Boston to Toronto, Toronto to Seoul, and then Seoul to Manila. And all I can say is that I had no idea just how incredibly hot this country would be. Here are some of my initial thoughts on my stay.
Transportation Is Varied and Interesting
Pedicabs
To get anywhere, especially without a car as I don’t have one here, transportation can be interesting. You can take a pedicab a short distance in order to catch another form of transportation, a tricycle.
A tricycle basically allows you to ride in a sidecar alongside a motorcycle to get to your next destination.
Jeepney
This may mean taking a jeepney, a shuttle, bus, or train. What you might think will be a 20 or 30 minute trip ends up being far longer. Most trips I take anywhere result in a typical 3-hour commute.
TSG Tip: While Filipinos are polite and will queue nicely for pedicabs, tricycles, etc., this all goes out the window when grabbing the train. I have never seen full out chaos that looked like it would erupt into an NHL hockey fight mid-game. It really was scary despite the fact that there clearly was enough room for everyone to get on the train so I’m so unsure why they do that, but you should prepare for it.
Grab
Grab
Grab is the Asian Uber and it’s definitely an app that you should download and have on your phone before your first visit to the Philippines. The price is dependent on time of day, demand, number of drivers, and so on, but it’s still far less than anything I’ve ever had to pay in the US. I took one the other night for a one hour ride from Quezon City to Manila and it cost about 400 pesos or about $7.46. Insane right? Best part is you pay in cash and know the total cost of the ride up front before you ever get in the car.
Traffic
Typical Manila traffic
Anywhere you go in Manila, there’s bound to be traffic. Now I’m used to traffic living in Boston and having traveled to large cities like New York City, London, Madrid, etc. But nothing can prepare you for the never ending cycle of traffic that exists in Manila.
Traffic at night in Manila
Traffic exists all day and all night no matter where you need or want to go. Trying to get a shuttle or a taxi at high peak traffic times is pretty much useless. It can be frustrating but when you accept this is a way of life, then you stop fighting it. Seems as though a few years ago cars became more affordable and now everyone is driving and the highway infrastructure just can’t seem to keep up with it.
Shopping Is A Sport Here
Shopping is a big deal here in the Philippines. Filipinos may not recognize it, but there are stores, malls, vendors, markets, and pretty much shopping on every corner everywhere in Manila. Feel like grabbing a quick drink? Sure, go ahead and buy a pair of jeans, shoes, or a rug for your kitchen while you’re at it. You can’t escape the non-stop offers that are constantly in your face.
My first trip to a wet market in Manila
This is true even if you’re going to the wet market to buy fruits and veggies. Guaranteed you’ll be able to buy something out of the ordinary like clothing or electronics if you look hard enough.
I will add that Filipinos do love brand names, too. You can find most  popular brands like Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Skechers, and so on just like you would in the US along with other brands maybe less popular for westerners like Anello. But people here will shop and then eat and then shop again especially at the large malls like SM Mall of Asia with its own amusement park and even the tallest Ferris wheel in the Philippines, the MOA Eye.
TSG Tip: Did I not mention the other popular Filipino past time is eating?  Let’s just say that if you think you might go hungry here, give that thought a rest as you’ll be fed constantly, whether you want to or not.
Tumblr media
Eating in Manila
I’ve been quite fortunate to enjoy more than one home cooked meal in Manila and the cooks were kind enough to make sure I got vegan food. That meant tofu, veggies, rice, and salad and the food was delicious.
Eating out can be another story. I’ve eaten at a couple of Thai restaurants, which meant I could get both tofu and veggies. But other than that, I had to suffice with some sides at restaurants I might not normally visit.
Fast Food
For example, I stopped at the national treasure of the Philippines, Jollibee, and all I could have was fries. So I chose the wasabi fries, which are fries dipped in wasabi powder. You better like wasabi if you want to eat these bad boys.
I stopped off with a friend for KFC, where shocker — they serve rice with the chicken and unlimited gravy from containers you pump yourself in the dining room. I could only find fries, but on the way out saw they had salad. Next time KFC, next time.
Didn’t eat here but I do love the signage
Although I didn’t stop here, I absolutely loved the signage for Botoy’s.
Snacks
Tahon vendor
One of my favorite on the go snacks was served by a street vendor on a bike. Yes, he had heated tofu on the back of his bike to create the one of a kind snack called taho.
Taho
Made from silken tofu, arnibal (a sweetener and flavoring), and sago pearls, which are like tapioca pearls. I paid 20 pesos or about $0.37 USD for this yummy vegan snack that you just slurp right from the cup. Not bad at all, right?
Veggie chicaron – I’m in heaven
Let me just add that sometimes I trip across things in the weirdest of places and this is definitely one of those things. Chicarones, or pork rinds, would never be something I could have. But a veggie version? I’m so into them and they come in a variety of flavors including salt and vinegar and extra spicy. I definitely need to limit my interaction with these bad boys.
Beverages
Smoothie time
Fruit is your friend here in the Philippines and I enjoy having a fruit smoothie as often as I can. I had a mango pineapple smoothie from a kiosk at the mall for all of 89 pesos or $1.66.
Of course I found a way to squeeze in a Chatime Passionfruit green tea with bubbles
When I saw a Chatime store at the SM Mall of Asia, I quickly ran in to get passionfruit green tea with bubbles, less ice and 50% sugar.
TSG Tip: Keep in mind that Filipinos love sugar and I could’ve easily gone down to 25% sugar or even none as it was way sweeter than what I’m used to back in the US.
Beverage cart in train station
I was hot as hell going to the train the other night and opted for a pineapple juice even though the mango concoction looked good. Unfortunately, they all contained dairy so none for me.
Churches
In front of Baclaran church
We all know I love a good piece of architecture, especially religious ones like churches, cathedrals, synagogues, mosques, and the like. So when I heard about Baclaran Church, which enshrines the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, I knew I wanted to visit. It’s also the largest Marian church in the Philippines and since I never see my name anywhere, it was yet another reason to go.
Love locks at Baclaran Church
I was surprised to see the many love locks on this pergola on the grounds of the church, but it was a nice place for couples to do a photo op.
Before entering the church you can light a candle or two with a donation.
Baclaran church
Then you can enter the large church built in 1958 on your own and take a seat in one of the pews. On Wednesday the church is flooded with devotees who attend mass so keep that in mind when choosing a day to visit.
Final Thoughts for My First Two Weeks
I’ve touched on it lightly, but it’s hot as hell here in Manila. They don’t always have the air conditioning on and since it’s considered rainy season, they try to enjoy the cool air from the rain. As someone who always does her hair and makeup, let’s just say I’ve pretty much given up on that. My hair is a curly wreck of a mess that’s dry and frizzy and my makeup doesn’t stay on in the heat. Maybe as I adjust I’ll start doing it more often.
I fell on the sidewalk and nearly did a split within the first hour or so of being in Manila and scraped the hell out of my knee. Then I decided to kick a pedicab with that same knee. So I’m basically bruised on both legs like I’ve been doing some kind of secret underground fight club while here in Manila.
One week into being here I developed what is called “travelers diarrhea” and have been sick for days. Today is the first day that I’m eating and keeping things down. I’m convinced the Philippines is trying to kill me, but I won’t allow that to happen. I’m planning a trip to the province of Bicol for some cooler air and to explore outside the city of Manila and hoping the Philippines will cut me a break.
Do you have any ideas, suggestions, or comments for me for my visit to the Philippines that you’d like to share?  Leave your comments below. Discover some other great destinations and travel ideas here on the Travel Shop Girl website.
On my new SPONTANEOUS TRAVEL SCALE of 1-5, with 1 being super easy and spontaneous and 5 being you better plan far in advance, Manila scores a 3 for spontaneous travel as this large city has so much for tourists and locals to see and do if they can plan their trip carefully to avoid high traffic times.

5 Must-Try Food Places in Taipei
Some proficiency in Chinese may be required, but let me help you with that.
Most of you know that I visit Taiwan at least twice a year because my family lives there. My friends always ask me what to do, where to go, and what to eat. I share with them this jaw-droppingly, beautiful itinerary guide that still secretly makes me want to quit public health and just put up a travel agency (The rave reviews are from my friends, not mine).
I think of Taiwan as the affordable Japan. Its proximity to the Philippines means that flights are cheaper. Food is insanely affordable here, even though overall standard of living has increased over the past few years. Interesting fact: it was also colonized by Japan in 1895 up until the end of the Second World War.
Because of the recent relaxation of visa rules for Filipinos, more Filipino tourists have been visiting Taiwan, including my friends. So instead of having to repeat myself again and again and again, I will be writing about my top recommendations for Taiwan. Think of#TheKrisList, but with more substance.
I will begin this week with food, because if there is one thing that you should do in Taiwan, it is to eat your heart out. If you want the best Chinese food experience, then Taiwan is the place to be (and trust me, there won’t be any mystery meat). I will exclude the night markets in this post, as I believe it deserves an entirely separate entry. Also, ote that this list is limited to Taipei.
1. Have a traditional Chinese breakfast at Fu Hang Dou Jiang (阜杭豆漿)
While walking distance from Taipei Main Station, it is on the second floor of an inconspicuous building, so you will only find it when you are looking for it. Your landmark is a long line that bleeds through the street. The line moves fast, so know what to order.
When in doubt, just point to the food on display.
Unfortunately, the menu is in Chinese, but the only thing worth trying is the soy milk, or dou jiang (pronounced toe-tsiang) (豆漿). Order hot if you want it like a soup, and cold if you want it like a drink. If you were not a fan of soy milk before, you will be once you try theirs. Pair it up with the fried dough, or youtiao (油条).
2. Have beef noodle soup at Taoyuan Street Beef Noodle (桃源街牛肉麵)
You can also walk to this from Taipei Main Station, but it’s nearer to Ximen Station (Blue/Green MRT line). The beef noodle is NTD 180 (around PHP 300). This place is also in the second floor of a pretty inconspicuous building, so you might not find it immediately. The menu is also in Chinese, but last time I was there, there was at least one server who could understand some English. If you make hand gestures of a big bowl, they will probably understand it as you wanting their beef noodle soup. They will also ask for the spice or la (辣) level, so just say yi dian dian (pronounced ee tien tien) (一點點) if you do not want to blow your ears off. Or just make that gesture with your index finger and thumb.
Alternative: In case you cannot find that place, the one across is more accessible and also very tasty: 老王記桃源街牛肉麵 (there is no English translation, unfortunately). You will recognize it by the long line outside the restaurant in a hidden alley. The line moves fast, and don’t be alarmed if there are strangers suddenly seated beside you if your table is not full. Fast-paced Asian restaurants maximize space and time, so once you are done eating, pay. Photo taking is also not allowed there. Don’t try because my friends and I did and we were reprimanded immediately by a shouting Chinese uncle.
3. Treat yo self at the “birthplace” of boba / milk tea, Chun Shui Tang (春水堂)
They have a ton of branches all over Taiwan, the original being in Taichung City in central Taiwan, but an accessible branch that they have is the one in Hsin Yi Mitsukoshi Mall. Imagine Chun Shui Tang in the same market segment as Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐), which has since expanded to Asia and America.
For me, Din Tai Fung tastes the same everywhere, so if you already have had it in the Philippines, don’t bother going there and instead try this. The dimsum here is pretty good too, and definitely buy any of their boba / milk tea. Their menu is also available in English and they accept credit cards here.
Side note: boba / milk tea is everywhere (I cannot stress this enough). My personal favorite brand is 50 lan (50嵐) but there’s also Coco and Chatime if you want more familiar international brands. When ordering, they always ask for the sweetness and ice levels. I recommend a 50% sweetness level or ban tang (pronounced pan thang) (半糖), and less ice or shao bing (pronounced shao ping) (少冰).
4. Have the best hotpot experience at Mala Yuanyang Hotpot (馬辣頂級麻辣鴛鴦火鍋)
They have a ton of branches all over Taipei, but note that not every branch is the same. The best one is in Ximen District. If you can speak Chinese, it is best to call them for a reservation beforehand. This branch has unlimited booze, Movenpick and Haagen Dazs on top of the unlimited everything else - all for the amazingly low, low price of NTD699 (around PHP1200).
Writing this blog post is making me hungry.
5. Have a do-it-yourself legitimate tea ceremony at Yao Yue Tea Restaurant (邀月茶坊)
This requires a bit of travelling up the mountains of Taipei, at Maokong village. Maokong has one of the biggest tea plantations in Taiwan. The air is not only fresh here, but it also smells like tea because of the tea leaves being planted on the side of the road and walking trails.
You take the Maokong Gondola (pro tip: get the crystal cable car, or the one with glass floors) from Taipei Zoo station (end of the Brown MRT line) up to Maokong (NTD120 one way) and you will be greeted by small night market.
This is a tourist trap for those lazy to take the road ahead (Photo courtesy: Gian Abaya).
Make your way down the trail and you will see many tea houses. Do not be tempted by any of them and walk down for 20 to 25 minutes. At one point, you might be asking yourself or your companions, “Are we there yet?” but trust me it is worth it.
What did I say? (Photo courtesy: Gian Abaya)
The tea house is open 24/7 (awesome, right?!). You buy the entire tea packet (ranges from NTD300-400) and each person is charged a water fee (at dinnertime, this is NTD90 or around PHP150 per person). They give you a tea set and instructions (there’s an English version) how to make your own tea. Recommended teas: Tieguanyin (鐵觀音) and Paozhong (文山包種). You can stay there as long as you want and enjoy the view of the mountainside. Another pro tip: Watch the sunset from here - it’s breathtaking.
Do you not see how legit this is? (Photo courtesy: Elly Reserva)
Finally, some pro tips on ordering at restaurants:
Most restaurants only accept cash, so make sure you have enough.
Most restaurants give you a piece of paper where you check the items you want to order, and usually you either pay before eating or after.
Tipping is not customary, and restaurants usually outright refuse the tip.
In fast food chains and some restaurants, it’s clean as you go.
Water may not be available in many restaurants, but sweet or cold tea is available.
Chopsticks and soup spoons are usually the only utensils available, so learn how to use them before coming to Taiwan
Most people do not understand English but they are used to tourists so they will be able to speak some English words.
You will not regret trying any of these places. If you can try all five, then you will definitely make your Instagram followers drool over jealousy.

Have you ever been to Las Vegas? No. Doesn’t seem all that appealing to me anyway. What did you have for breakfast this morning? I didn’t eat breakfast which is a stupid idea considering I drank quite a bit last night...I did have a small piece of chocolate Pop-Tarts from at Gabie’s place this morning to mask my breath when I came home. Do you have any loose change in your pocket? I don’t have pockets on me right now. Do you like Taylor Swift? Her past singles were catchy, but that’s all I’ll give her. Everything I’ve heard about her attitude has just yelled petty to me. What’s your favorite Disney Channel movie? Strictly Disney Channel? High School Musical or Tw*tches.
If you met your favorite celebrity, would you be calm or starstruck? LOL I would probably cry if faced with Kristen Stewart. I’ll be starstruck in a calm way (so to answer your question, I’ll be both) and just maybe pull her in for a huge hug because I love her so much. Are there any lights on in the room you’re in? Yeah we have lights in the dining room but it’s daytime so the natural lighting from the sun is enough for now. What’s your favorite subject in school? I was always the teacher’s pet in history. I’m in college now though and have different classes per semester; my favorite class in the last sem would have to be art studies.  What’s your favorite holiday? Halloween, even though I hate referring to it as a holiday because it’s not. I just pick that because I hate every other holiday. Do you ever have to do yard work? No. Sounds like something I’ll always put off haha. Do you think Bad Romance is a catchy song or an annoying one? Catchy. Whether played in 2009 or 2018, best believe I’ll sing along and even slightly dance to it. Do you use perfect grammar online? If perfect = formal then no. Are you currently using a laptop? Yep. Do you have any live versions of songs in your music software? Music software? Damn. Anyway, no I don’t really like live editions of songs, no matter how much I love the artist or no matter how good it is. Did you or do you listen to Britney Spears songs? I never did voluntarily, even as a kid in the 2000′s. I remember her songs were everywhere though - in kid’s parties, at the mall, on TV, everywhere. Is it a windy day? It has been today, actually! The nicest surprise I’ve had all day so far. In the past week, have you ridden in a taxi? No, I never ride taxis because the drivers here are creepy and even be kidnappers. I’d much rather book an Uber or Grab, which is an alternative to Uber but in Southeast Asia. Do you ever wish on stars at night? Not really. I would if I chance upon a shooting star, but those never happen in my area. What color are your eyes? Dark brown. What album is the current song you’re listening to off of? I’m not listening to music at the moment. What’re you doing after you finish this? Move upstairs and either take a nap or another survey. What song’s the most overplayed right now? There is another song by The fucking Vamps called Personal and as usual they are bugging the living shit out of me. It literally plays in three different radio stations within five minutes and it drives me nuts when I’m driving. They are the actual worst. Please break up. Are you in a band? No. How clean is your bedroom? Super tidy. Is there a pen within reaching distance of you? No, there isn’t. Are you sitting at a desk? No. I’m at the dining table but moving to my bed after. Does your favorite band have a male or female lead singer? [continued after taking a nap three hours ago] Female singer from an awesome band that rhymes with ‘paramour’! Do you normally shut your bedroom door before you go to sleep? Yes, absolutely yes. Rest assured I will not fall asleep if it’s ajar even the slightest bit; it has to be shut all the way through. I can’t sleep with any light around, so. Have you seen the movie Moulin Rouge? No. I know Gab has a physical DVD but I’ve never seen the movie. Would you ever dye your hair a different color? Of course. It’s just a matter of when I’ll do it, because right now I’m still pretty indecisive about which color I’ll be getting, bitching about how expensive and high-maintenance it’s going to be, and worrying about everything having to do with bleach. Are there any framed pictures in the room you’re in? Yeah. My kindergarten grad photo is framed, and my high school clique’s photo is also in a frame on my bedside drawer. Have you ever been to a Broadway show? Nope. Not really my thing, but it’s the sort of thing I’d surprise my girlfriend with since she’s all about Broadway. What’s your favorite movie soundtrack? I don’t have one. I’ll just stick with my default answer Carol. Do you prefer group or individual work? Really depends on what kind of work we’re talking. Anything with creatives or logistics, I would much rather be in a group since I cannot for the life of me be creative, or even be forced to be creative. I can be helpful in other ways when it comes to that; but every other work outside of that–say a research paper, or a chapter report, or an investigatory project, I’m okay with doing on my own. Do you have a key to anything besides your house? Just my car. Are you wearing anything with stripes? Oooh I am. My top is black and white striped. It was actually the top I wore to the high school batch reunion last night, but it’s a little comfy so I haven’t changed out of it yet. What time did you go to sleep last night? Er around 1 or 2 AM, not really sure. I just instantly passed out on Gab’s bed and don’t remember anything since I was waaaay too tired. Did anyone tell you that you were beautiful today? Yep. What show did you last watch? RuPaul’s Drag Race, which I watched with Katreen and Gabie when we were at the former’s house last Thursday. I initially groaned when Katreen suggested it cos I thought the show was going to be too loud and fast-paced for my taste, but thEN OH MY GOD EVERYTHING IS PINK AND BRIGHT AND FABULOUS. We ended up watching a second episode. Do you think you’ll do anymore surveys today? I hope so. I’m kinda disappointed with myself for taking very few surveys during my break, when I said I was excited to finally spam my own blog with them after the last sem practically ate me up and never gave me time. I go back to school Tuesday and I probably took like 10-15 surveys total in four weeks, yuck @ self. What’s your favorite ice cream flavor? Cookies and cream. I also really liked queso real in my early teens. When was the last time you stayed home from school sick? 6th grade. Eight years ago. Insane. Could you ever complete a 500-piece puzzle? I could try! My girlfriend actually has a 1000- or 1500-piece puzzle of a painting that we tried to finish with her little sister during a sleepover, but I was boring and fell asleep by 2 AM. It’d be nice to try it again. If you could run a red light and not get caught, would you? No. Thing is, so many Filipino drivers do that already; hence why we are one of the most terrible on the road. I’ve seen enough videos to not want to even try it. Do any bands flat-out annoy you? I would say yes but it’s an insult to the word ‘band’ if I referred to The Vamps as one, because they’re my sole annoyance. Do you have a mirror in your bedroom? I had before my mom got it removed ugh. Was today a birthday for any of your friends? It’s Reggy’s birthday, who’s a girl I went to grade school and high school with. I wouldn’t consider her a friend. When was the last time you rode in a limo? I’ve never done it. Do you take naps daily? Hahaha yeah almost everyday. That’s gonna stop when I go back to school. Do you still make Christmas lists? No. I think I made it for one or two years before I finally called bullshit on Santa. Do you watch the show Dexter? Yes, mainly because they said it was like Breaking Bad and because CM Punk watched it. Didn’t like the first episode, haven’t tried rewatching it since. Have you ever been to any sort of convention? No. Which song did you last listen to on repeat? Probably Tessellate by Alt-J. < Good choice. I’m now super garbage compared to that, because mine is Bruno Mars’s Finesse collab with Cardi B hahaha. Where do you want to live when you grow up? Just in the city where all the hurly-burly is. It gets boring living in a suburban ish environment. Are you currently using a blanket? Nope. Are there any songs that make you cry? Yeah sometimes, there are instances I’ll sing along to a certain song and feel them more than usual. I’ve cried to When It Rains by Paramore on my bad days. How many siblings do you have? Two, both younger. What’re you doing this weekend? Binge-watching Black Mirror and enjoying the final days of my Christmas break. Do you prefer swimming at the beach or in a pool? Beach. The chlorine in the pool turns me away from it, plus with so many kids swimming in pools you never know if you’re already swimming in wee. When was the last time you had a haircut? Some time in November. Which musical instrument do you think sounds the prettiest? PIANO. Without a shadow of a doubt. Do you know what you want for Christmas? I didn’t want anything for Christmas for the first time in my life. That’s a little sad, innit? I got the 2018 Starbucks planner, which I was more than happy about. Gabie got me all sorts of jewelry, a blanket, and a sparkly pink tumbler and I loved each gift; and my sister got me a doggy pencil case and made personalized stickers for me. I loved all of them. Do you watch fireworks on New Year’s Eve? Yes, that’s a family tradition. Not going out to watch them just feels foreign and empty to me, since we’ve done it all my life. Is your birthday within the next three months? Yup. *silent panicking* How long is the song you’re listening to? Three and a half minutes. Are you anticipating anything this week? Yeah I am pretty excited to attend my new set of classes. It’s my first sem to have four majors too, so that’s another thing I’m waiting to experience. Will I be okay? Will it kill me? Will I have nervous breakdowns? Who knows. Is your mom or dad the older parent? They were born in the same year, but my dad is older by eight months. Do you watch anything on E!? Just Keeping Up. Are you going to get off the computer now that you’ve finished this? No, I might take another one.
