#fic: jack hughes and nolan patrick

Just discovered the WYL universe and it’s so good! I can’t wait for the final chapter of Trevor/Jamie! I also have a question about Nico and Jack - sorry in advance if this has already been asked/answered. When did Nico first know or suspect Jack was a sub? Did he suspect during the threesome? Did he know when he offered to let Jack take care of him and it was just to confirm his suspicions? Or was that when he first realised?

Yay, so glad you're enjoying it!! I don't think I've specifically confirmed when Nico knew. Caveat up front: I didn't put it in the story, so this is just me speculating and having fun with it. If I ever write Nico's pov of this story, it might change! But let's speculate. 😄

I think Nico was attracted to Jack pretty early on, maybe even before the threesome, and that inevitably put the idea in his head of what it might be like if Jack subbed for him. But being into someone doesn't necessarily mean they have a compatible dynamic with you, as Nico learned a couple years back when he developed an intense crush on Nolan Patrick during their draft year events (Nolan actually is a sub, but Nico didn't find that out). So Nico notices Jack and then has to be all "oh man, don't go down this path again, stop imagining your dom teammates as subs, you are probably wrong and it's vaguely creepy" and trying to get over his crush. He did not do a great job of this.

So then they have the threesome, and that REALLY doesn't help Nico with his crush, especially the thing where Jack responded so strongly to his praise. But Nico's still probably wrong, right?? He's gotta lock down these thoughts, Jack is a DOM, imagining anything else is just setting himself up for disaster. He's still telling himself not to let his imagination run away with him when Jack shows up at his door in subdrop. But the idea is firmly enough in his head that it's easy to notice when Jack gets even more upset at the idea of having to take care of Nico. Maybe...maybe Nico's imagination hasn't been so out of line. It's worth a shot, anyway, if it might help Jack. So he tries comforting Jack the way he would a sub, and he feels Jack's body melt, and then he knows.

Jamie walked into the apartment seeing most of the lights all off and just a glow coming from the dinning room, “Nix?” Jamie called out as he knew Phoenix would be home as Jamie had the car. Jamie sniffed slightly and could smell something good cooking.

“In here.” Phoenix called back nervously wiping his hands on his pants as he waited for what felt like forever for Jamie to walk into the dinning room.

Jamie furrowed his brows in confusion but walked down the hallways and into the dinning room and gasped slightly seeing the dinning room.

There were lots candles around the whole room, the dining room table was decorated very fancy like a restaurant, there was sushi on the plates and Phoenix was holding a bouquet of orange tulips.

“What is all of this?” Jamie soflty asked as he looked all around and he noticed how the sushi was his favorite kind.

“Jamie, I would love if you would be my date for tonight.” Phoenix nervously asked as he stepped closer to Jamie holding the flowers in one hand.

Jamie smiled softly his cheeks flushing bright pink, “Just tonight?” Jamie teased slightly letting out a small chuckle.

“As long as you will have me.” Phoenix told Jamie and gently grabbing Jamie’s hand.

“Did you talk to Z?” Jamie titled his head curiously.

“I uh was telling him about my feelings and he may of told me that you felt the same for me.” Phoenix sheepishly explained he was glad Trevor told him that so he had enough confidence to ask Jamie out.

“And how do you feel?” Jamie soflty asked stepping closer and looking up at Phoenix.

Phoenix swallowed nervously with Jamie being so close, “I like you and i would really like for you to be my boyfriend.” Phoenix soflty spoke maintaining eye contact with Jamie.

“Yes. Yeah i would really like that.” Jamie beamed and nodded quickly.

Phoenix let out a laugh of relief, “Good.” He gently pressed a kiss to Jamie’s cheek before stepping back and pulling Jamie to the table, Phoenix pulled out the chair and Jamie sat down. Phoenix handed the flowers to Jamie before he walked around the table to sit across from Jamie.

“This is my favorite sushi.” Jamie stated as Phoenix opened the bottle of wine that’s also Jamie’s favorite.

“I know.” Phoenix simply replied and smirked slightly at Jamie making him shake his head fondly.

Jamie and Phoenix ate their sushi talking about random things before Phoenix excused himself and walked out of the room.

Jamie gently brushed his fingers over his flowers and smiled softly, he’s never gotten flowers before.

Jamie looked up and saw Phoenix walking back in with a plate, with something that smelled really good.

Jamie perked up happily when Phoenix put a steak on his plate and he beamed. Steak is already Jamie’s favorite but when Phoenix’s makes it it’s even better.

“Thank you.” Jamie smiled softly and reached over the table gently grabbing Phoenix’s once they both finished their steaks, “No one has ever done something like this for me.” Jamie sadly added, he’s never been very lucky in relationships and a lot of people in LA just wanted to try to get with him for money and no one ever has treated as kindly as Phoenix does.

“Of course Jay.” Phoenix smiled softly squeezing Jamie’s hand, he was sad no one ever treated this sweet boy the way he should he, “I wanted to do something for you because i care for you.” Phoenix’s words made him smile brighter and blush more.

“Got room for dessert?” Phoenix playfully questioned and Jamie chuckled but nodded.

Phoenix lifted Jamie’s hand pressing a soft kiss to it before he gently set it back on the table and let go of it getting up.

Jamie flushed even brighter at Phoenix’s actions and watched him walk out of the room.

Jamie stared at the door until Phoenix walked in with a round tin in his hands. Phoenix set it down in front of Jamie and Jamie beamed as he realized it was his favorite dessert, cheesecake.

“Did you make this?” Jamie asked noticing how it was a reusable pan.

Phoenix sheepishly nodded and his cheeks turned pink, “If it’s not good then-“ He was cut off by Jamie leaning up and pressing his lips to his.

Phoenix stopped talking and cupped Jamie’s face bringing him closer as he desperately kissed him back.

“It’s going to be great.” Jamie whispered against Phoenix’s lips. Phoenix smiled softly back.

God look at Nico, pastry chef, all-around boyfriend material… I always forget about him but then whenever I see him I want to read all the fic about him. But with who??

anon i have to confess i am not a connoisseur of the nico hischier fanfiction scene though i know it exists. i know people ship him with jack hughes (i also do, though i don't really seek out fic) and jonas siegenthaler and back in the day with nolan patrick (i had a real fondness for this at the time but idk if it's still on anyone's mind at all). if you want recs other people might be able to provide but for myself i mostly just occasionally see pictures of him and write a little imagine for myself in my head and then move on 😂

I love the idea of subdrop manifesting physically (also a reason why I love angry_geno_is_score's "Serenity in Those Deep Waters")

Like imagine Connor discovering Sid is sick and he immediately springs into hero worship fueled "how can I help, I can get you the best doctors" etc.

And maybe at this point Sid has figured out what is causing him to be sick. Not that he'll ever tell anyone that stubborn idiot boy. But he keeps hinting at Connor what is causing it but it flies over Connor's head because, well, he thinks that's just a fact of life.

(Except maybe Connor's sickness is more mental. Panic attacks, anxiety bouts, etc. But either way Connor hasnt connected dynamics to being sick)

Also I SO think Leon would pick up on this too. But he would have the attitude that Nico and Jamie did. AKA "he needs to figure it out himself. I'll help him through it but I am NOT touching this concept until I absolutely have to"

Ooh okay this is interesting. I haven't had either of the subs in this 'verse have long-lasting illness-like side effects from not subbing -- but then, neither of them have tried to do it as long as Sid has. They've pretty much caved at 20, 21. As someone in the USNTDP pointed out in Jack's story, the need to practice your dynamic isn't fully developed until adulthood. The health consequences probably don't start until then. What would it look like if Trevor tried to do what he was doing last year for another decade??

It would also vary by person a bit, and that's how you get someone like Nolan Patrick. He hasn't been suppressing his subbing that long -- but maybe he's unusually sensitive to the side effects. By the time he realizes what it's doing to his body, he's developed a chronic condition, and all the subbing in the world won't get him healthy enough to return to the NHL.

...And okay also returning to Connor and Leon: this could involve one of my favorite AU tropes, Leon thinking that everyone in North America is stupid about this kind of thing. He sees Connor in distress and thinks, obviously this guy should sub; why wouldn't he? But of course it's not that easy for Connor. Leon's going to have to learn to be patient with the hangups that come with an upbringing in deeply subphobic society.

Jamie was sitting in his room on FaceTime with Trevor, listening to Trevor yap about something from practice.

Jamie heard a knock on his door and knew who it was, “Yeah?” Jamie soflty called out and Trevor quieted down looking interested.

Phoenix poked his head looking at Jamie he didn’t notice his little brother on Jamie’s screen, “Hey sorry,” Phoenix apologized quickly seeing he was on call, “Did you want to get lunch before we need to head out?” Phoenix soflty asked knowing Jamie hasn’t eaten lunch yet and they need to head to the stadium in a few hours for their game.

“Yeah give me like fifteen minutes?” Jamie softly nodded and asked him with a soft smile that made Trevor look at him suspiciously.

“No rush.” Phoenix smiled and turned around to walk out.

“Wow! Don’t even say hi to your own brother!” Trevor yelled through the screen making Phoenix turn around and Jamie turned his phone to Phoenix.

Phoenix and Jamie share a fond look of Trevor’s dramatics.

“Hi Trev.” Phoenix softly greeted his baby brother.

“Hi!” Trevor beamed happily back as he got his attention.

“I’ll talk to you later.” Phoenix gave Trevor a look and walked out of the room not wanting to take away from the time Jamie has to talk to his best friend.

Jamie watched Phoenix go with a sappy look o his face and snapped his head back at the phone at the sound of Trevor’s mischievous snicker.

“What?” Jamie asked alreadly dreading what Trevor is going to say.

“You like my brother!” Trevor singsonged with a giant grin on his face.

Jamie blanched and looked extremely pale while also his cheeks flushing bright red, “N-No!” Jamie stuttered out quickly looking extremely panicked.

“Relax Jimmy.” Trevor smiled seeing that Jamie most definitely has a crush on his big brother and his didn’t mind.

“I don’t.” Jamie tried to be stern but his voice wavered, “But uh hypothetically if i did, would that be okay?” Jamie hesitantly asked not looking at the screen.

Trevor felt his face soften and shook his head with a fond smile, “Jamie there is no one else i would want to be with my brother.” Trevor knew how much the two would be good together and while he was sad about the trade he was glad that Jamie got traded to Philly.

“Thanks.” Jamie cleared his throat sheepishly rubbing his neck.

“Now go get food with Nix.” Trevor smiled softly at his best friend once more.

“Bye Z.” Jamie smiled softly back and nodded.

Trevor waved with a grin before he hung up.

Jamie blew out a long breath, Trevor was okay with him liking Phoenix, maybe it was okay to accept what he felt for Phoenix.

Jamie has always felt nervous around Phoenix but not the anxious nervous that he is used to but more of a nervous he really likes, Jamie has always felt himself with Phoenix and Phoenix just always seems to know how to read him in a way Trevor can’t even do.

Jamie nodded slowly and knew he couldn’t pretend he didn’t feel anything for Phoenix anymore, he’s been crushing on him since Trevor introduced them in 2021.

my findings on the breakdown of hockey rpf ships:

the 2000’s era

- these are ships mostly made up of players drafted from 2003 to 2008

- they are our eras legends, the ones that ruled the 2000’s

- most popular ships include sidney crosby/evgeni malkin, jonathan toews/patrick kane and alexander ovechkin/nicklas backstrom (with frequent crossover pairings)

ships from this era definitely have the most content and can be found of all varieties. most recent fics of these pairings are more on the nostalgic side but you can go all the way back.

the 2015 draft era

- ships mostly made up of players drafted from 2014-2017

- these are the players that a currently dominating

- juniors and the ohl are especially big for ships in this era. that means lots of angst and rivalry.

- most popular ships include travis konecny/nolan patrick, mitch marner/auston matthews, leon draisaitl/matthew tkachuk and dylan strome/connor mcdavid

fics in this era more often then not have various characters from this era as good friends (mitch marner, connor mcdavid, dylan strome), (jack eichel, noah hanafin) and the pairings between players from this time are very mixed. basically everyone is shipped with everyone. also everyone from this draft is cursed so be prepared for very angsty fics.

the rookies

- players drafted from 2019 to 2021

- babies. just babies.

- a large portion of fics with players from this era include the usntdp boys (jack hughes, trevor zegras, cole caulfield, alex turcotte, etc)

- the most popular ship is jamie drysdale/trevor zegras by a long shot, but you can find lots of rare pairs with any of the characters above

players from this era ARE actually friends so lots of things are based off of real life. also there’s a lot of cute friendships and figuring each other out together because again BABIES. although, if you don’t like quarantine/covid fic then maybe skip on some of these cuz they are the quarantine babies of the nhl.

obviously, this isn’t conclusive of every ship and there are a lot between teammates or across age groups that don’t fit into these pairings. however, from my time in the fandom this is the distinction i’ve made between the types of fans!

-i know i was yours long before you were mine by sensationalshehulk is such a fun little nate bastian/mikey mcleod fic. absolutely love the premise (marriage clause!!!!!) and the vibes and the way the team all tries to help keep these two together even when scattered across the globe, very sweet

-it's hard to be a saint in the city by theaa was a super compelling jack hughes/nolan patrick fic. i loved this characterization of jack so much, and i really think the fic made this ship work, made it compelling and engaging and it's fun read

-tragic ends by trueneutral is an absolutely lovely quinton byfield/alex turcotte ghost/haunted house fic. it takes a certain something for me to enjoy a fic around a ghost, and this has it. really cool world building, the dynamic between quinton and alex is perfect, and i got SO emotional reading it

I see a world in which post-retirement nolpat has accepted he's a sub, to the extent that he'll secretly see professional Doms to get his needs taken care of, but is still extremely ashamed about it and isn't out to anyone, and is therefore denying himself the chance of a real Ds relationship that could actually bring him happiness. Enter TK...

Yeah, this seems right. Washing out of the NHL made him admit that he can't ignore his needs as a sub. But he doesn't feel like he deserves good scenes, because he doesn't deserve good anything, so he goes to a professional who keeps things clinical and does the bare minimum to maintain his health. Probably doesn't even let himself go totally under -- or maybe he can't, he's spent too many years keeping himself out of subspace, and now his mind trips him up anytime he tries to access it. Which just reinforces the idea that he's unworthy: why should he bother getting a real dom, when he won't even be able to get anything out of it?

Side note: I bet Nico had a crush on Nolan their draft year and was dying to put him on his knees and felt totally guilty about it. Then Jack was drafted to the Devils and Nico got a crush on him, too, and was like, "Why does this happening to me? Why do I keep getting crushes on fellow doms??" Little did he know 😏

Phoenix, Cam and Travis were all sitting at one table together in the cafeteria eating breakfast after the early morning skate before they are getting on the plane to Toronto for the game tonight.

Phoenix was having his mocha hot coffee, eggs, toast and potatoes, and he managed to grab his favorite oranges as there was only one left this morning.

Jamie was a few minutes late having to talk to Coach about something but he walked into the cafeteria and got some food on his plate and he frowned sadly when he saw there was no oranges left.

Jamie had looked around when he walked in to see where Phoenix was sitting and now walked over to the table and sat down in between Cam and Phoenix.

“What’s with the frown Drysy?” Travis poked at his newest teammate noticing the sad frown on his face.

“They had no more oranges left.” Jamie sadly told them, it sounded crazy but for some reason wherever the team’s kitchen gets the oranges, they are quite literally the best oranges.

Phoenix felt his heart clench funny at the sight of Jamie being unhappy and he slid his orange across the table to Jamie and it was completely worth it watching his face completely light up with a bright smile.

“Thank you! Are you sure you don’t want it?” Jamie smiled brightly but still looked concerned at Phoenix.

“I’m good all yours.” Phoenix shook his head fondly.

Travis raised a skeptical brow because in all of the years he has known his best friend never once has ever shared any food with anyone and sharing his absolute favorite food is unheard of.

Travis has noticed how much softer Phoenix is to Jamie but this was just a whole nother level of softness towards Jamie. Travis wonders if Phoenix realizes he’s in love with Jamie.

Phoenix blushed slightly at the giant smile he got from Jamie but shook his head and looked away and made eye contact with his best friend who was smirking at him knowingly.

“What?” Phoenix mouthed at Travis but Travis just shook his head with a smirk, knowing Phoenix will figure it out eventually.

Phoenix turned back to Jamie and saw Jamie holding out a piece of the orange and Phoenix softly smiled and nodded grabbing the slice happily eating it.

Jamie split the rest of the orange with Phoenix making Cam and Travis share a look wondering when the two were just gonna admit their feelings for each other.
