like genuinely I know fgo doesn't necessarily do enough with his character (which is a surprise I'm sure /s), but there's so much they could do with what they did give (his "too clever by half" moments while genuinely being smart in various ways, his various moments of genuine compassion and capability of immediately making up for mistakes while expressing genuine remorse...), and even if they don't embark on digging into that, I definitely will (when I can find the muse to write proper fics)

Gray is now my first Bond 15 Servant, which means…

This event also gave me the last CC I wanted to give her. I headcanon that Command Codes are developed through Servant's connections, and for my Gray they are:

Royal Bunny (increase either Quick, Arts or Buster effectiveness) - connection with Artoria and Rhongomyniad; it represents her change, hence the random effect of the card

Heel Princess (absorb HP+inflict curse) - bond with Baobhan Sith; it develops her skills as a gravekeeper, adding the ability to curse enemies and strengthening herself through energy absorption

Crest of Humanity (increase critical star drop rate) - bond with Olga Marie; they belong to different departments and are associated with different Lords, so this CC emphasizes team work

A Fairy Tale of Rain and Stars (increase NP gain and critical star gather rate) - bond with Add and connection with Morgan; it strengthens Add and allows Gray to more easily unseal Rhongomyniad

The Crimson-Hearted Liege's Command Seal (increase critical strength) - bond with Waver; thanks to his knowledge and observation her attacks are stronger and more precise

Lady Avalon's True Name is Manaka Sayjou.

(Want to make clear that I'm only talking about the FGO Servant, not the version in Prototype) (Only FGO JP Spoilers are a Valentine, and Arcade- not the collab, but actual one that was already out by LB7)

Lady Avalon is a servant introduced in Grand Order during the summer 7 Arctic Summer World Event. She is part of the pretender class. A class known for having a "True Name" that is revealed at a later point in the story. Lady Avalon is an exception*

Elisa is also an exception but the reason she's a pretender is explained in the story- the fusion with Shi Jin and appears to be powerless. Lady Avalon's explanation is more complicated.

We are given two explanations for why she is one and both of them are deliberately uh maybe? Lady Avalon is very insistent on it being because she's not a human- but her bond profile makes it sound like it's about the question:

Why does she desperately flee the King Arthur who claims to be from another world?" It's a question that Arthur himself doesn't seem to understand the answer to. (Second image is FGO Arcade Fan Translation)

So let's zoom out for a minute. Lady Avalon has some unique and odd attributes that are solely her.

She is the first and only character in the entire game to exclusively exist as a Summer Servant.

She is a Pretender despite being a Caster in Arcade, and no explanation is given · Nov 6, 2024 Oberon cannot see Merlin. He has a passive skill that only effects Merlin and lowers his buff success rate. Lady Avalon is not affected by said passive skill. What's more, Lady Avalon directly comments on noticing Oberon in her valentine! · Nov 6, 2024 If she is just Proto Merlin, there is a lot of questions. Why does she flee from Arthur? Why does she refuse to admit she's Merlin? Why can she see Oberon? Why is it being treated like she's hiding some great secret.

Why does she call Arthur her beloved?

We have also met the actual Merlin Prototype and both their attitude and word choice do not seem to line up with Lady Avalon. In the Arthur Trial Quest they talk to Arthur and do not sound at all like Lady Avalon aside from the occasional giggle. And they are not shy.

Ibuki-douji believes they know some great secret about Lady Avalon. Our entire list of characters with dialogue for her is Gareth (Same banner), Arthur, Nero Draco, Ibuki and… David?

Lady Avalon and Merlin describe the Grail very differently. Manaka in Prototype talks about how the original purpose of the grail is to collect wishes and summon a Beast. But how are they fulfilling their purpose in Chaldea then? Like unless Ritsuka is going to be a beast...

Romulus in Arthur's interlude refers to Beast VI- the one Arthur is hunting as the Beast who will come beyond the stars borders. Then Lady Avalon is addressed a Beast of the Stars by Nero Draco in the Official Translation of Lilim Harlot…

just really sucks that fgo is not a good game. there's never anything to do in fgo. there's a pretty hard plateau on how far player power scales within the gameplay system even accounting for blatant powercreep in servants so there's a pretty hard limit on what they can do to keep fights interesting too. new chapters don't actually pose any significant new challenges or goals outside just getting to read the story because your power plateaus so hard so they need to lock events behind story completion to get people to bother at all. the only thing to do outside events is farm and the only thing to do during events is farm because there's almost no content that actually employs your full roster and even less of it is permanently available to replay.

if you put granblue down for a few months you can pick back up where you left off and there will be new goals to work towards and anything you missed will come back around sooner or later. if you put fgo down for a few months there won't really be anything new to do save perhaps a new main story chapter to do your one-time completion of but you'll have missed several event stories that you'll never get another chance to read ingame. if arknights is having downtime and you don't feel like just dumping ap to farm you can go fuck around in its multiple alternate gamemodes or you can cook funny challenge clears of various bossfights or whatever because almost every single map in the game is permanently available to replay whenever. if fgo is having downtime and you're caught up on the story all there is to do is farm. and because it's been this way for years every endgame player has piles and piles of resources already so they keep having to invent new ludicrous resource sinks to keep those players busy.

in several ways it feels like fgo is just running into the limits of its own approaching 10 years old system and that's why they're struggling to figure out how to keep a sense of progression in the game. stuff like lv120 grail cap or the OC class networks being these huge resource sinks for minimal stat gains feel like they're scared to expand player powerlevel too much because at a base level there's just so much rng involved in the combat that any stat increase has the potential to spiral immensely. but they also just keep making absolutely baffling decisions especially regarding content availability. in fgo if you start playing the game because you were enticed by the bodacious bikini babes on the summer banners you won't ever actually get to play the event they feature in because it's locked behind catching up with the entire main story and will never be available again past its initial runtime. this cannot be a good business model. fgo fans can't read but at this point you can hardly even blame them when the game won't let them read.

Under the cut is a BUNCH of dialogue - side note, I didn’t really know about the FK in depth when working on this so I went off of his preexisting relationships with Gawain, Lancelot, and Morgan (for Bao) . I also wanted to include more but I figured 22 is a lot (20 if you arent counting the other fan servants) and I ended up cutting the three Hassan and xaunzang.

This is mostly just servant interaction, working on cleaning up the bonds and extra dialogue (likes, dislikes, combat, etc)

Ranking last year silhouette servants?

BB Dubai: Kinda wonky to rank because Dubai, Cosmos, and Golden are all separate characters, with one being completely new, one being old, and one being both. I can't honestly say all three versions deserve to be above the second place, but perhaps the full package does. BB Dubai is the one that theoretically doesn't rely on the emotional buildup of BB's past appearances, so the goal with her writing is proving her as a BB. Work a new character story from scratch and make her appeal to BB fans. And I think she was really successful there. Nice still gets what made the original BB so beloved.

Vincent van Gogh (Miner): I really didn't want to have the top two spots being alts of older characters but unfortunately Amphibian is my goat and Goghie's relationship with Theo is incredibly powerful stuff. 2024 as a whole was extremely good year for events despite having 2/3 of the usual quantity.

Andromeda: Charming design and personality, and a well-executed event. I can't understate how much Andromeda's efforts to be a hero are a great idea to use on the most archetypical damsel-in-distress of mythology.

Louhi: Repeat Andromeda's first sentence here. She could stand to look more Louhi-like and be less of a jumble of stereotypes that kinda signal she'll be the only Finnish Servant we'll get, but this is really minor compared to how enjoyable she generally is. The handling of her vs Sitonai's Louhi is a brilliant idea.

Ushi Gozen: Already has her own post, iirc. Still can't ever be as good as she was in her debut, but her My Room Lines are so much better than anything she gets in Samurai Remnant and its collab.

Le Comte de Monte Cristo: She did it. After 8 years trying, Sakurai finally made Dantès good. Some elements of his participation in FGO could be less convoluted, we certainly didn't need 4 Edmonds running around, but the meat of his story is intense, nuanced, and satisfying. Id is Sakurai's masterpiece and his handling is most of the reason why.

Alessandro di Cagliostro: The diet coke version of Douman. Has backstory connections with Sakurai's entire Victorian era cast and refuses to elaborate about it. Complete opinion coming after the inevitable drama CD.

Yui Shousetsu: The same Shousetsu we already knew and were unimpressed about. We get to learn some really crazy things about Souiken, but that doesn't really change Shousetsu herself as a character. She did have the funniest Valentines scene, at least.

HibiChika: OKSG's flop mascots continue to flop. Now they have a new friend who is about as meh as the two of them. Chikagi is at least better in FGO than in her home series.

Hassan of the Flaring Star: Spends all of Id just observing Fujimaru and saying he'll form an opinion about them later. I hope I also get to form an opinion about him later, but so far he's given me no material to work with.

No offense I will never understand Feh fans who haven't played the other fire emblem games. Like this isn't fgo, a good portion of the non-oc characters are just glorified action figures because they don't bother to properly show them off them in the main story or any events.

it's honestly so ridiculous that instead of listening to the playerbase to fix the issues they've had with getting new players, revenue (in regards to content releases), etc. they just decided to do this shit with the gacha. im not too surprised in the sense that it's a gacha, of course its predatory, however it's still a new fgo low.

and it's really just stupid, they put out surveys that they don't give a fuck about. remember when nasu&takeuchi were surprised in an interview that the interviewer asked them about summer medusa? a summer character that people have begged for for years? and they didn't even bother to consider it? literally, their business model is fucking dogshit.

they introduced the coin system and stopped doing reruns, and ever since then it just kept getting worse. and instead of, idfk, implementing qol updates that'd fix these issues, they just double down. again and again

i'm not all too surprised, but i sure as hell am annoyed by it. i love fgo, i love fate. i enjoy the story even if it's awful sonetimes. i love many of the events (the skadi summer was enjoyable enough, i loved the bakin dog event, gudaguda, etc). it's given me jiang ziya, one of my biggest comfort characters. it's given me so many characters i love. it's another piece of media that i get to enjoy with my big sister, it's a big talking and bonding topic for us! some of my favoirite mutuals (who i never talk to but still love to see in my notes sometimes) i found through fgo. and it's frustrating to see them just fuck it all up like this continually

yeah i'm not surprised, but still disappointed. will i stick around? idk, maybe. there's still things i like about the game, i want to finish the main story arc at least. maybe i'll stick around until the 10th anniversary, see how abysmally they fuck that one up. it's getting kind of laughable tbh, i definitely won't stick as many resources/time into this game anymore, but yeah

I am, as a Captain Nemo fan since my youth (due to a 'Childrens Illustrated Classics' version of 20k Leagues), eating extremely well this Lostbelt, thank you Nasu.

It's something that's interesting, that for some events and chapters, Nemo and his respective Series have served more as plot devices and 'utility' mechanisms than normal characters, they're there quite literally to staff the Storm Border and keep it running, at times they're more part of the background than one of Guda's main Servants (and they're not even Guda's Servant! They're Sion's!).

Like I said, I've loved Nemo since that start, so I'm not actually well read on other player's opinions on them, but I actually imagine that their (relatively) constant presence over time might endear them more to players than if they were just an exception one-chapter/event connection, and with Nemo having more steady development throughout Arc 2 (primarily in LB4 and Imaginary Scramble). Which thus makes the death of the crybaby Marine (as well as the recognition that five have been lost prior) and the destruction of the Storm Border resulting in the disabling of the Captain hits harder, having someone(s) that was a steady presence suddenly being taken off the board, that which they built being broken apart, and then the subsequent permanent loss of one of their crew.

And that's something that's really great, leading into the Tlaloc fight, is that Nemo has Indomitable, his own unique Guts skill, which powers him up when it is activated and reflects that it is in the most desperate situations that his courage and skills shine through... which they then immediately do in the battle itself, with him being able to nullify Tlaloc's constant stun storms as long as he is on the field. She primarily targets him (except with her charged attack) but you can use this to proc Indomitable and/or redirect them with Mash's double taunt skills. And if you do use Leyline Stones, that stun-blocking passive stays with him on revive.

I also love how well FGO conveyed his anti-imperialist nature. And that he uses a gun in his 2nd Arts card.
