Star Wars Rebels time travel au. Ghost crew ends up in clone wars era and they go to Coruscant bc that’s where things happen. Kanan thinks ‘yes the perfect opportunity to socialize my feral padawan’ and puts 14 year old Ezra in a class with other padawans his age. Kanan has tea with Depa and Mace but gets a call 20 minutes later to please come pick up your padawan. Ezra started two fights, bit someone, threw a knife at the teacher, and used almost every swear word known to sentient life.

Hard to top the emotional impact of the last two weeks--but still so much good stuff in this episode 😊

Whumptober Day 19 - Flesh And Blood Amongst War Machines

Summary: Ezra gets hurt when a mission goes wrong, but not for the reasons anybody would expect.

When Hera and Kanan met Sabine, Kanan nearly left the Ghost. Sabine was a young girl, recently run out from her own home and hell-bent on exacting her revenge. Hera was prepared to bring her on as a soldier, someone to utilise for the team, to accomplish more missions with greater efficiency. That night, Kanan had spent half an hour shouting at her, insisting he would have no part in recruiting child soldiers.

‘She is a child,’ Kanan had said, jabbing a finger to the door of what would soon become Sabine’s room. ‘A child doesn’t need a war, they need a family,’

Hera had recoiled, face stricken as she turned to follow Kanan’s finger, looking at the door as though she could see through it to the fifteen year old girl sleeping beyond it. Kanan waited while the cogs turned in her head, her eyes softened and she turned back to Kanan with a determined look in her eye.

‘Then we’ll be a family,’ Hera insisted.

‘Who just so happens to be rebelling against the government?’ Kanan raised an eyebrow at her.

‘Something like that,’ Hera shrugged. ‘We’ll protect her, Kanan, we won’t let her get hurt, but she wants to help. They’ve hurt her, they’ve down awful things to her, she deserves to do something about it and better with us than out there on her own,’

Kanan sighed heavily. He’s always hated when she’s right.

That hatred still bleeds through to today as he sprints down the hallways of an Imperial ship, blaster bolts flying past as he curses loudly. Hera will no doubt be waiting with a lengthy ‘I told you so’ speech when they get back to the ship.

He’s been separated from the kids, but Zeb is with them and he’ll keep them safe. Besides, they’re getting pretty good at handling themselves. Still, he won’t be able to release this knot of worry in his stomach until he sees all three of them on the Ghost, in one piece.

There weren’t meant to be this many people on this little cargo ship, nor was there meant to be a whole alarm system set up for the storage units. It was supposed to be a guaranteed victory, according to his source. Hera had insisted it wasn’t a trustworthy source but, as usual, Kanan didn’t listen and, as usual, Hera was right.

He should really start listening to her more often, he’ll have to wind that into his apology somehow. She’s going to be pissed. By the time Kanan reaches the docking point, his chest is heaving and he’s given up trying to deflect blaster bolts with his lightsaber, instead opting for a flat-out sprint and using the Force to dodge any incoming shots.

‘Spectre-Once to Spectre-Six, do you read me?’ Kanan barks into his commlink, skidding to a halt in front of the docking point and igniting his lightsaber to hold his position.

‘Yeah, yeah, we’re almost there, keep your hair on!’ Ezra’s impatient voice comes over the line. He’d like to scold the boy, but he remembers how annoyed he used to get at his Master for checking in five times in as many minutes while on missions.

Just as Kanan is about to tell them to hurry up, a door hisses open and Kanan chances a look over his shoulder, still blocking the red lights shooting past, to see the rest of his crew piling in, chased by a squad of troopers even larger than the number after Kanan.

‘Come on, back to the Ghost!’ Kanan shouts over the cacophony of gunfire, reaching down behind him to flip open the hatch. Zeb is offering coverfire for the kids while they jump in first, each bearing large backpacks no doubt filled with whatever they managed to scoop up before getting caught.

‘You next, Zeb,’ Kanan shouts. He and Hera have taken their vow very seriously from that day they took on Sabine and Kanan has always been the last one back on the ship. They won’t leave anyone behind.

Finally, with everyone else safely evacuated and the troopers closing in dangerously fast, Kanan leaps down the docking tunnel, using the Force to pull the hatch closed and telling Hera through the comms to get the ship away.

Zeb, Sabine and Ezra are all standing around the loading bay, hands on their knees as they catch their breath after the close escape. Sabine is smiling, as she always is after these missions. If Kanan didn’t know better, he’d think she enjoyed it when things go wrong. Ezra has one hand wrapped around his ribcage and Zeb is lowering himself to the ground, already reaching for his gun oil to clean his bo-rifle.

Kanan leaves them all to it in favour of going to assist Hera in the cockpit. No doubt the few TIE fighters the cargo ship will have are being launched to pursue them.

‘Sounds like your little mission went well,’ Hera snaps as soon as he enters the cockpit.

‘Maybe we save the lecturing for after we get the kriff out of here?’ Kanan responds tersely, sitting next to her and pulling his steering yoke forward.

‘You’re just hoping we’ll get blown up and you won’t have to hear it,’ Hera retorts. Kanan knows she’s mostly joking, there’s that glint in her eye she gets when she’s pulling his leg. He’s not stupid enough to think he’s completely off the hook, though.

‘Don’t give me any ideas, sweetheart,’ Kanan mutters.

It doesn’t take long for the two to expertly manoeuvre the ship safely away and Chopper sets a course back to Lothal. By the time they’re in hyperspace, Zeb and Sabine have joined them in the cockpit and as Kanan and Hera turn around, they grin.

‘That was fun,’ Zeb laughs. ‘We should do it again sometime,’

‘Garazeb Orrelios, you mind your tongue,’ Hera chides and the lasat immediately falls silent as Sabine’s smile slips from her face. ‘I told you, Kanan. I told you not to trust that man and what did you do?’

‘I trusted him,’ Kanan admits. ‘I know, I should have listened to you, I’m sorry. I should really listen to you more in the future,’

Hera glares at him for a moment, clearly torn between ripping into him some more and simply leaving well enough alone.

‘I will be running background checks on all of your sources from now on, Kanan Jarrus,’ Hera tells him firmly and Kanan, sufficiently chastised, agrees wordlessly.

‘On the bright side, we got some cool stuff,’ Sabine points out, bringing forth the backpacks she and Ezra had, while Zeb offers up the crate he managed to lug all the way back to the ship. ‘We could sell it for a pretty penny,’

‘Now you sound like Ezra,’ Kanan points out, then frowns. ‘Hang on, where is Ezra?’

‘Zeb?’ Hera says warningly and the lasat, still recovering from the use of his full name, looks up with wide eyes, holding his hands up innocently.

‘He was on the ship, I didn’t leave him behind again!’ he insists.

‘No, he was definitely on the ship, where’d he go?’ Kanan asks, waving off the other man’s worries. ‘Is he still in the loading bay?’

Sabine shrugs. ‘He left, I figured he was hungry. You know what he’s like, always eats after a mission,’

The answer doesn’t sit quite right with Kanan who purses his lips, closes his eyes and reaches out for the boy in the Force. He’s on the ship, in his room to be precise and there’s something… off about him. Kanan doesn’t say a word as he gets to his feet and marches from the room, intent on finding his Padawan.

Ezra’s not normally one to hide himself away, not anymore. It’s been a while since Kanan’s found him hunkered down in the vents or locked away in the ‘fresher. Generally, he can’t shake the boy loose, though he tries not to complain too much.

As he reaches the living section of the Ghost, Kanan makes his way towards Ezra’s door. Before he can reach it, however, something red and glistening on the floor catches his eye. Blood. Shit.

‘Ezra?’ Kanan calls out, quickening his pace as his heart leaps into his throat. There’s no response as Kanan hurries over to the boy’s door and, without knocking or announcing his presence, jams his thumb into the button to open it. ‘Buddy, what's going on?’

‘M’fine,’ comes a muffled voice. There are no lights on in the room, but Kanan can just about make out Ezra sitting on his bunk, head bowed low.

‘Oh, I can tell. The trail of blood leading up to your door really proves that,’ Kanan tells him dryly. ‘I’m turning the lights on,’

‘No! Don’t… do that.’ Ezra deflates as the room is flooded with light and Kanan can see the bright red blood covering Ezra’s hands as the clasp over his chest. ‘It’s nothing, Kanan, just need a band-aid,’

‘Band-aid, my ass!’ Kanan snaps, crossing the room in three strides and pulling himself up to join Ezra on his bunk. ‘How the hell did you manage that?’

Kanan pulls Ezra’s hands away and either Ezra has given up trying to hide it, or it’s bad enough that he knows he needs help because he doesn’t fight. He just winces and hisses in pain as Kanan pulls away the blood-stained flight suit. How had nobody noticed this?

‘Kid, you need stitches,’ Kanan says, frowning at the depth of the gash. It’s not life-threatening by any means, but it’s still worrying. ‘Seriously, what did you do?’

Ezra stares down at his bloody hands in his lap. ‘Fell on the edge of a crate… stupid of me,’

Kanan doesn’t respond right away, halfway torn between laughing because, it is indeed a little comical that in all they dealt with today, the worst injury came from tripping, and feeling bad for the boy. Instead, he pulls his comlink towards his mouth and asks Hera to bring down the medkit.

‘You’re gonna be okay, kid, I’ll stitch you and you’ll be good as new in no time,’ Kanan assures him. From the way Ezra is silently staring down at the wound, it seems that he’s bothered more by the embarrassment of it than the actual pain.

‘Why didn’t you tell any of us, though? If you’re hurt, we need to know,’ Kanan tells him gently, waiting patiently for Hera to arrive.

‘Zeb and Sabine would’ve made fun of me,’ Ezra shrugs, leaning over slightly until his head bumps against Kanan’s chest. Kanan sighs heavily, wishing there was something he could say to the others that would stop them picking on the kid so much. Deep down, he knows it’s just because he’s new and that every new member of the crew has endured the same treatment.

‘They won’t make fun of you for getting hurt. Not like this,’ Kanan says. Sure, if he’d gotten a mere bump on the head or a scraped elbow, even Kanan might tease him for not looking where he’s going, but nobody will make fun of the boy when he’s going to need stitches. Not until it’s healed at least.

‘Promise?’ Ezra mumbles. Kanan smiles fondly at the boy, leaning forward to wrap his arms around his shoulders.

‘I promise, buddy. And if they do, I’ll beat ‘em up,’ he offers jokingly. Ezra scoffs.

‘Thought Jedi weren’t meant to do that,’ he points out.

‘Only the good ones,’

Y'know what would be the funniest cut they could do in Ahsoka? Having Shin, Balyan, and Morgan Elsbeth all talking super seriously about Thrawn. Just a whole scene of them talking about how strategic and brilliant he is, and how he must've faced such serious complications to need their help escaping.

Only for it to cut to Thrawn yelling and screaming over Ezra hiding his artworks across the planet and he refuses to leave until they hunt Ezra down and find them.
