Fenix TX – Self-Titled Something I’ve talked about multiple times is when a genre gets popular, there are going to be a lot of copycats and bands that either switch over to that sound to capitalize on the trend, or are inspired to start from that trend being popular. MGK switching over to pop-punk is a good example of that; in a weird way, though, he helped to bring the genre back into the mainstream itself, because the genre was doing just fine in the underground, but the genre had its peak in the mid-00s when bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Panic At The Disco were all over the place. The late 90s and early 00s, however, were when the genre was starting to become very saturated and filled with a bunch of generic and forgettable bands that time sort of forgot. Some of these bands are still beloved today, but a lot of them are either relics in a forgotten time, or they have a handful of fans, and the rest of the public knows them for one song. In the case of Houston band, Fenix TX, they’re a band that people still like, but I don’t see any widespread love for them, either. They’re one of those bands that diehard fans of the genre seem to enjoy, because they weren’t a band that really crossed over into the mainstream. They only dropped a couple of albums before breaking up for a long time, anyway. The band actually started as Riverfenix, and Drive Thru put out their debut self-titled album in 1997, but they had to re-record the album and release it under a different name, because the estate of the late actor River Phoenix didn’t like them using that name. They ended up using a majority of their debut album and just re-recorded it with the name Fenix TX under a new contract with Drive Thru and MCA.

I’ve been wanting to check out their 1999 self-titled proper debut, because these guys are seemingly beloved in the pop-punk scene, but nowhere else. They’re not a household name, despite Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 practically discovering them and wanting to manage them, until work on 1999’s seminal Enema Of The State prevented him from doing so. That’s the thing with this band, though – they just sound like a third-rate Blink. That’s what I meant by bands being copycats, especially when a sound gets popular, because you had a ton of Blink-182 clones pop up in the late 90s and early 00s. Fenix TX is one of those bands, although calling them a pure copycat would be pushing it, only because they do have more complex instrumentals, versus being straightforward pop-punk. They employ a twin guitar sound, which obviously Blink doesn’t do, and they do touch on ska and hip-hop from time to time. There’s a song with a rap verse on it that isn’t very good, but it’s something different, at least. I can see the Blink comparisons, though, because the band’s sense of humor is very much aligned with Blink. It’s very surface level and juvenile, which is something Blink was very good at back then. A good example is the closing track, “The Rooster Song,” which is basically a really dumb innuendo, but they think it’s super funny for some reason. Maybe it was really funny in 1999, or if you were 13, but I don’t know. That song is a pretty bad closer, although the music itself is fine. I’m just not a fan of the band’s really dumb and immature sense of humor that they employ on this album.

I could just call this a pretty good Blink-182 album, and leave it at that, but there are some interesting moments instrumentally. Vocally, though, I don’t care for them that much. Their vocalist falls in between Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge with how whiny and annoying he is, but he doesn’t get on my nerves too much. The best part of this album is the instrumentation, as it is a bit elevated from your standard pop-punk record by being a bit more complex, but that doesn’t really matter when the vocals, the lyrics, and the songwriting just isn’t anything worthwhile. I like this album a good bit, but I’ve listened to it a few times, and I can’t really remember too much about it after it’s done. Maybe it just needs more time to sit with me, but it’s not a bad album. This album, while not being a total copycat, is best for fans of the genre, versus any newcomers or casual listeners. Casual listeners won’t get anything out of it, but diehard pop-punk fans might enjoy this. There’s something to be enjoyed here, especially some cool instrumental moments, but the vocals and lyrics aren’t anything to write home about. I do like that the album is pretty short, only around 40 minutes, but it doesn’t do much for me outside of that. When it comes to albums from rather obscure bands, I always ask myself if it’s something I’d listen to instead of the essential and classic albums that I already like. Would I listen to Fenix TX’s self-titled album over Dookie, Sticks And Stones, or Take This To Your Grave? No, but I can see myself dusting this off every now and again, or coming across it and being like, “Oh, I haven’t listened to this band in awhile, let’s check this out.” I guess that’s better than completely forgetting about them.
