A Time Of Useful Consciousness
You Down to Clown ?
Caterpillars and Butterflies
at The Cali Lili Indies ™️

©️ by Cali Lili
“ We raised and released 42 monarch #butterflies last season and during this year’s cycle from the returning mommy monarch fluttering all around our faces, entrusting us with her eggs, to the fat caterpillar crawling into #chrysalis then magic emerging newborn into flight, I marvel that every moment is a “time of useful consciousness.”
“Time of Useful Consciousness is an aviation term defined in Wikipedia:
“the amount of time an individual is able to function effectively (e.g. perform flying duties) in an environment of inadequate oxygen supply.[1] It is the
period of time from the interruption of the oxygen supply or exposure to an oxygen-poor environment to the time when useful function is lost, and the individual is no longer capable of taking proper corrective and protective action. “
these upcoming #elections are indeed a “time of useful #consciousness” for the ideas we cherish, for #humans being , #wildlife #sealife America, global #democracy the survival of our mothership, this blue planet and the #multiverse in which we float, hurtling toward our future past in a time-space continuum which barely recognizes us.
“Losing consciousness” would mean losing democracy and sinking into the warm bath before the ice cold fascism shuts down humanity by legally assassinating the constitution from within.
We’ve managed to avoid #asteroids and now, we know how to billiard them away from impact with our cool-AF NASA pool cue. Now we must build ourselves a different kind of pool cue to tip away impending political “asteroids”
Our choices in life, including a girls’ right to make her own decisions, will be subject to the will of the state, which will always usurp the will of every individual.
Not just HER choice.
YOUR choice too.
Every individual would serve the state. Not just the unfortunate 10-year-old rape victim in some news story.
You.

I’ve posited in my movie “Eve N’ God This Female Is Not Yet Rated “ with original soundtrack album “this female is not yet rated“ that the “independent female” characters known as “Eve” and “Lilith” from the Bible story, who represented “female freedom,” were the original “scapegoats” illustrating that older hatred against : the independent female.

Soheila Sokhanvari Rebel Rebel Exhibition Visit
To begin this project, I visited the Barbican to see Soheila Sokhanvari’s exhibition: “Rebel Rebel” (Sokhanvari, 2023). The exhibition consisted of 32 pieces, including sculptures, videos and 28 paintings depicting famous Iranian singers and actresses. The name of the exhibition, Rebel Rebel, is borrowing from David Bowie’s 1974 song and is used as “tribute to the extraordinary courage of these female stars (Barbican, 2022).
Sokhanvari’s work centres around the islamic revolution in Iran of 1978-79 and its effects on women. The Islamic revolution consists of the events that led to the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty. Iranian society switched from one extreme to another. From having laws in place that make the veil compulsory, to the banning of the veil then back to the compulsory veil after the revolution (BBC, 2019). The monarch was attempting to make society more western in the “white revolution" that started in 1963 where he started to introduce modernising reforms. The strides to become more western was the cause of the islamic revolution as the muslim majority was against what the Iranian society that the monarchy was creating. ()
As I walked through the installation, I found that although I have no Iranian ancestry or ties to all the women depicted, it conjured up a feeling of nostalgia. I think this was because of a few elements. Such as the positioning of all of the pieces. The paintings were all hung up along The Curve, part of The Barbican. As you walk past all of the paintings in a dimly lit streamlined room, it feels like you are put in Sokhanvari’s shoes walking down a hall of fame or even memory lane. Although I presumed that the reason for the nostalgia was because of the music and patterns which I could connect to, my friends who are both ethnically english, experienced the same sensation.
Another possible reason is due to the context given at the start of the installation. The description explained how the project was highlighting women who were famous but were forced into exile due to the restriction of how women were allowed to be represented (Barbican, 2022). For example, it was prohibited for women to sing in public. Censoring what was allowed to be produced in the media meant that a large part of the culture was being lost. I think that the nostalgic feeling that was created is itself bittersweet, as you reminisce on sweet moments but the loss of the positive times, creates a bitter negative feeling. I think the exhibition was bittersweet in the same sense.
What I found interesting about the exhibition was that the artist chose to present these actresses and singers in a powerful portrait, giving them visibility after decades of hiding, where the songs and films were becoming buried under the government's regime. The portraits were very expressive and the poses and freedom of what the portraits wear and how the figure is displayed to pose. This is what gave them power, taking it back from the government's regime. However, for most of the paintings and especially the earlier paintings, the way that she painted the draping fabric and pattern was quite flat, similar to how the background and furniture were painted. This creates a camouflage effect. Where it seems like there is still a sense that they should not be seen due to how the clothes could blend in with the interiors. I do not think this was the intention, rather she did this to contrast the greyscale painting of the figure. The stark contrast of the vibrant patterns against the realistically rendered skin amplifies the message of how these women's histories have been lost in time. The clothing and patterns can be preserved in a way that people cannot be.
Overall I really enjoyed 'Rebel Rebel' but my biggest critique would be what information that was presented to the viewer. Although an exhibition guide was given through a QR code, the site was not working and I think they could have presented the backstory of the art in a more simple but effective way. Only after researching more about the exhibition afterwards, did I then learn about all the different layers behind her work. I was drawn to the exhibition due to the relation of ethnicity and nationality to identity and because of Sokhanvari’s use of patterns. However, the patterning was never addressed. With further research (Walton, 2019) I found that all of the patterns used were sampled from her iranian fashion lines. In particular the one that her father, Ali-Mohammed Sokhanvari owned, therefore were the patterns that surrounded her as a child. To Sokhanvari, the patterns are not just decoration. Instead they become markers of time.T”hey are political, they can speak about an era, or social status” (Walton, 2019).
On the artist's website, I found the reasoning for Sokhanvari’s use of calf vellum in her paintings is due to symbolism of cows and their relationship to religion. As they are the animals used for sacrifice in religions such as Islam. This illustrates the “sacrifice of the individual and artist”(Anon, 2014). Sokhanvari has other references to Islam and its relationship to the individual, like the giant islamic geometric pattern that was hand painted on the walls. Which was made to “dizzy the beholder so that they could contemplate the vastness of the universe and the greatness of God.” (Barbican, 2022)
The exhibition has underlying themes of death as the dark room of paintings lead to a brightly illuminated star sculpture. Where the music plays comes from. The music played echoed throughout The Curve, creating a haunting effect. The paintings also became less realistic as they went on and more surreal. The way that the installation was composed mimicked the way that near death experiences are represented as “a light” that contrasts the rest of the dark room. Perhaps this is to represent the end of an era in Iran. Where the restriction on how women presented themselves was less severe.
The way that Sokhanvari uses patterns to represent time and history really inspires me and I would like to use the same techniques as her by using patterns to communicate what I want. I find the whole concept of the loss of culture that has been conveyed throughout the installation also really intrigued me as I link this to diasporic identities. The biggest difference is that for Sokhanvari she is conveying an event where the government is the cause of the suppression of the expression of identity and culture. However, for diasporic identities, it is the self that is suppressing the expression. I found that from personal experience, individuals who come from households where both parents are immigrants from countries like Bangladesh are placed in a western society but home lives and parents expectations of them are still very much Bangladeshi. To avoid being alienated and singled out, the individual has to assimilate into western culture and eradicate traces of their diasporic ethnicity in order to fit in.

badass women of history ↝ queen arwa al sulayhi of yemen
Arwa al-Sulayhi, full name Arwā bint Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Mūsā aṣ-Ṣulayḥī (Arabic: أَرْوَى بِنْت أَحْمَد ابْن مُحَمَّد ابْن جَعْفَر ابْن مُوْسَى ٱلصُّلَيْحِي, c. 1048–1138, died 22nd Shaban, 532 AH or May 5, 1138) was a long-reigning ruler of Yemen, firstly as the co-ruler of her first two husbands and then as sole ruler, from 1067 until her death in 1138.[1] She was the last of the rulers of the Sulayhid Dynasty and was also the first woman to be accorded the prestigious title of Hujjah in the Isma'ili branch of Shia Islam, signifying her as the closest living image of God's will in her lifetime, in the Ismaili doctrine. She is popularly referred to as As-Sayyidah Al-Ḥurrah (Arabic: ٱلسَّيِّدَة ٱلْحُرَّة, lit. 'The Noble Lady'), Al-Malikah Al-Ḥurrah (Arabic: ٱلْمَلِكَة ٱلْحُرَّة or Al-Ḥurratul-Malikah (Arabic: ٱلْحُرَّةُ ٱلْمَلِكَة, lit. 'The Noble Queen'), and Malikat Sabaʾ Aṣ-Ṣaghīrah (Arabic: مَلِكَة سَبَأ ٱلصَّغِيْرَة, lit. 'Little Queen of Sheba').
As female sovereign, Arwa has an almost unique position in history: though there were more female monarchs in the international Muslim world, Arwa and Asma bint Shihab were the only female monarchs in the Muslim Arab world to have had the khutbah, the ultimate recognition of Muslim monarchial status, proclaimed in their name in the mosques.[2] She founded several mosques, the most prominent of which is Queen Arwa Mosque.
Arwa was the first queen regnant in the Muslim world.[3] Through her title of hujjah, she is the only Muslim woman to ever wield both political and religious authority in her own right.

As the children grew from childhood into adolescence, Queen Isabella kept them close at hand. They joined her at war during the turbulent 1480s and 1490s. These were not children who spent their early years frolicking in the countryside. Isabella’s children spent their childhoods at war against the people they commonly called the “infidel.” The campaign against Granada lasted ten years. Isabella’s oldest child, Isabel, named for her mother, spent almost her entire childhood with her parents on campaign, first against the Portuguese and then against Granada. She was twenty-one when the Muslims’ capital city surrendered in 1492. The youngest, Catherine, was seven. Queen Isabella was in a war council when she went into labor with her daughter María. They spent their daily lives surrounded by soldiers who were members of their own extended family or else friends and relations of their friends. When a contingent went off to battle, frequently with King Ferdinand leading the troops, they watched and waited to see who would come back and in what condition.
When the Spaniards accepted a town’s surrender, it was King Ferdinand who typically marched in to receive the oath of fealty from its leading citizens. Ferdinand wasn’t the only one who directly placed himself in harm’s way. Isabella entered at least four cities herself to accept their surrenders, including Almería and Baza. In Baza, she was accompanied by the teenaged Princess Isabel. Infanta Juana joined Queen Isabella at the surrender of Moclín. Prince Juan was part of the contingent at Jaén. When Boabdil surrendered in Granada, the keys to the city were given first to King Ferdinand, then passed to Queen Isabella, and then to thirteen-year-old Prince Juan.
Isabella was not the sword-wielding, front-line female warrior imagined by some. That story belongs to Joan of Arc. She was, however, a recognised mistress of some of the more important arts of war. Strategy, logistics, planning, even field medicine, were her specialities. Isabella realised that front-line medicine could save lives and boost morale, and sent with the army what came to be known as ‘the queen’s hospital’ – large tents and a team of primitive surgeons. It would become a custom. ‘The queen would always send six large tents along with the bedding needed for the sick and wounded; and she sent surgeons and doctors and medicines and people to serve them and said that the costs did not matter, because she would pay,’ explained Pulgar.
The travels were grueling, over steep mountain passes and arid plains, or waded through fast-flowing water, in blazing heat and freezing cold. There were dangerous moments. The mule ridden by the infanta Juana stumbled and was washed down-stream as the family waded across the River Tagus at Aranjuez in 1494. Juana clung bravely to her saddle and, when rescued by a stable-boy, was ‘red as a rose’ and ‘with great spirit’.
The royal family moved on horses and mules, or were carried on platforms borne by animals or men. Attempts to introduce four-wheeled carriages, which Margaret of Austria brought with her, fell foul of the steep mountains, rugged tracks and thoroughly battered remains of Spain’s Roman roads. ‘They are for flat terrain,’ one senior royal servant remarked with evident disdain. The acémilas trudged along in great trains behind them carrying their goods in bundles and chests. Isabella’s accounts books show that Catherine started riding – or at least balancing on top of – her own mule at the age of six. A portable altar allowed them to worship on the road; a contingent of priests, including confessors to the king and queen, and chaplains to the family, accompanied them, holding large crosses aloft as they marched.
Travelling like this, it would have been impossible for the royal children not to have noticed the great variety of peoples in their parents’ lands. The family slept in up to a dozen different towns, cities or monasteries in a month as the monarchs used their travels to assert authority over their lands. That meant listening to petitions and administering justice wherever they went. Fortified castles, palaces, monasteries, the houses of nobles or army camps were all part of the nomadic experience.
Isabella and her family lived with constant wartime risks. On the night of 14 July 1491 at the military camp of Santa Fe, a fire started in the tent that Queen Isabella shared with her daughter Juana. The Queen ordered one of her maids to move a candle that was preventing her from sleeping from one end of the tent to the other. Either something fell on the candle, or the flame [somehow] reached the tent itself, which caught fire and began to erupt into flames. The blaze immediately spread through the tents and primitive thatched huts near by. Shepherding Juana and her servants outside, she encountered Ferdinand running out of his tent in his nightshirt, dagger and sword in hand, cuirass on his arm, thinking it a surprise Muslim attack. One version of the story has Isabella herself grabbing her secret documents before rushing out with them in her arms, the infanta Juana behind her.
Then, Isabella and her daughter, escorted by a page also in nightshirt, went to Cabra’s nearby tent. As the royal children also ran from the fire and men started fighting the flames, the Marquess of Cádiz rode out with his men to form a defensive line in case the camp was under attack. His marquesa sent the queen clothes and all necessaries, and on return he himself relinquished to her his own tent. Yet that night, despite the efforts of the entire army, the fire, fanned by wind, consumed much of the camp. And Catherine was present on the occasion of another Moorish raid known as ‘the Queen’s skirmish’ when the royal ladies, young and old, knelt in prayer for safety.

“...Despite widespread ambivalence about having women as divine right monarchs, European men never developed a coherent theoretical opposition to female rule; John Knox’s notorious trumpet blast of 1558 had no imitators. Instead, male critics preferred a more insidious denigration of female sovereignty: the slogan ‘when women rule, men govern’ became almost proverbial before 1800. This adage used conventional beliefs about female frailty to assume that the man with greatest access to a female ruler was necessarily the most prominent person in her state.
…There is corroborative evidence to support this approach. Husbands were considered indispensable to every young royal heiress as late as the nineteenth century, Queen Victoria being the most prominent but not the only example. At the same time, some far older women monarchs, as early as Joanna II in early fifteenth century Naples, clearly governed through male favorites. All-powerful male favorites reappear with Russia’s first two eighteenth-century empresses, Prince Alexander Menshikov with Catherine I and Count (later Duke) Ernest Biron with Anna Ivanovna.
However, female rulers as early as Queen Anne of England also had politically prominent female favorites. Rule by royal favorites was never peculiar to female monarchs; both before and after Joanna I, many adult male kings did exactly the same thing. Because men comprised 90 percent of all European monarchs it is appropriate that the outstanding collaborative study of rule by royal favorites should include only one female ruler. If rule through favorites was endemic and independent of gender, were there any important differences between Europe’s female and male kings?
Although most of the time men and women governed in identical fashion, two special areas remained segregated by gender. The political peculiarities of female royal rule might be represented by a large central circle overlapped at both ends by smaller circles. The large circle represents ordinary government business (appointments, diplomacy, edicts, and so on) that was exercised in essentially the same way by both men and women. The small circle at one end represents an exclusively male sphere of warfare; throughout the five centuries considered here sovereigns were also military commanders, a role that remained taboo for female rulers. The small circle at the other end is the female zone of queenship centered around legitimate dynastic reproduction, so essential to hereditary monarchies.
Male rulers needed female accessories in order to have legitimate heirs; female rulers needed male accessories for the same purpose, but for a long time they also needed them to command their armies. In Sweden a tradition of personal military leadership by the monarch remained sufficiently strong to influence the abdication of its two women sovereigns, both of whom succeeded kings who had been killed in battle.
Nevertheless, Europe’s female sovereigns, who often found themselves entangled in wars, compiled a remarkably successful overall military record. Between the capture of the king of Sweden on the battlefield by the army of Margaret of Denmark in 1389 and the defeat of the previously invincible Frederick II of Prussia by the armies of two female monarchs in 1760, one finds the ten-year conquest of Granada, the last Muslim state in Europe, by the armies of Isabel the Catholic; the defeat of Philip II’s Invincible Armada by the navy of Elizabeth I; several great Swedish victories in the Thirty Years’ War during Christina’s reign; and the humbling of Louis XIV’s armies by those of Queen Anne. Such military successes far outweighed their reverses.
Meanwhile, eighteenth-century female monarchs found novel ways to cope with the problem of military leadership by such tactics as portraying themselves on horseback carrying a weapon, founding military academies to train their officer corps, and creating honorary orders for outstanding military service; Maria Theresa did all three, even naming the new order for herself. In western Europe royal military leadership ceased being a political concern; after 1745, no male monarch led an army in person.”

Raziya Sultan - First female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate
Raziya Sultan (around 1205-1240) was the first and only woman to rule over the Delhi Sultanate in India. Though her reign was short, she’s regarded as one of the most able of the Delhi sultans. The most complete contemporary account of her reign was written 21 years after her death by one of her opponents, but remains mostly unbiased.
Raziya’s father, Shams-ud-Din Iltutmish was a Turk slave brought to India from the Central Asian steppes. As a soldier, he served Muhammad Gori, the founder the first lasting Turkish sultanate in South Asia. Iltutmish was freed in 1206. After the dead of Muhammad Gori, he led a faction of the nobles and deposed Gori’s son, seizing power for himself in 1211 and moving the capital from Lahore to Delhi.
Raizya received the same education as her brothers. She was allowed to attend court and was taught military skills and statecraft. The fact that Iltutmish came from the steppes of Central Asia may have influenced his views. Women from nomadic pastoral societies played an important role and even took part in warfare, since every member of the tribe had to be useful. Raziya thus held important posts in his government, dealing notably with financial matters. Finding her more skilled than her two half-brothers, Iltutmish named her heir apparent.
Such a decision was unprecedented and was met with opposition. When Iltutmish died in 1236, his son Rukn-ud-Din was proclaimed sultan. Provincial governors soon rebelled. While Rukn-ud-Din’s army marched to meet them, Raziya won the support of Delhi’s Muslim population. She took control of the palace and was proclaimed sultan. When Rukn-ud-Din came back, he was executed.
Raziya wore a male garb. She appeared in public unveiled, her hair cut short, with a sword, a bow and a quiver at her side. One of her first actions was to strike coins with the following inscriptions:
“Pillar of Women/ Queen of the Eras/ Sultana Raziya Bint Shams al-Din Iltutmish (Sultana Raziya the daughter of Shams al-Din Iltumish)” and “In the Era of Imam al-Mustansir / Commander of the Faithful, Mighty Sultan / Splendour of the World and the Faith/ Malika Iltutmish, Daughter of Sultan Iltutmish /She who Brings Glory to the Commander of the Faithful”.
One of her first challenges was to deal with the rebel governors of the western provinces. Though she had few military forces at her disposal, she was a skilled commander. Her tactics were bold and she led her army from the front during battles. She also used propaganda, threats and bribes and managed to crush the rebellion.
As a ruler, she was competent and fair and notably established several educational institutions and public libraries. Her power was still threatened and conspiracies led her to become more and more authoritarian, notably sentencing the governor of Gwalior to death. Rumors spread that she had an affair with a slave and traditionalists opposed the rule of a woman. Local governors started to show their defiance. When a revolt arose in Bathinda, she led her army to crush it, but was defeated and captured. One of her half-brothers was named sultan in her place.
Raziya’s captor, Altuniah, seeing himself rejected from the political maneuvers, decided to ally himself with her. The two married and agreed to share the power. Raziya rode toward Delhi at the head of her army, but her troops were dispirited. She was once again defeated. In one account, she and Altuniah were captured and beheaded. In another, she escaped, but was killed by a farmer who wanted to steal her valuables.
Even though she reined only 4 years, Raziya is still regarded as one of the most capable Delhi sultans. Minhaj-us-Siraj wrote in 1261 that:
“Sultan Raziya was a great monarch. She was wise, just, and generous, a benefactor to her kingdom, a dispenser of justice, the protector of her subjects and the leader of her armies. She was endowed with all the qualities befitting a king, but she was not born of the right sex, and so in the estimation of men, all these virtues were useless”.

What are the fundamental rights Islam gives to man?
To comprehend the importance given to human rights in Islam, it is better to have a glance at the circumstances of the world before Islam. As follows:
1. All of the states in the world were ruled by monarchy. The ruling king, monarch or emperor had full authority over the people he ruled. He used to kill or exile the people he desired, and he did not have to account for anything he had done to people.
2. People were divided into classes. The monarchs close acquaintances and relatives (the nobles) were in the privileged class. Besides, a large group of people who were despised and whose rights were violated constituted a separate class. There was a deep gap between those classes.
3. Slavery was carried out in the most barbarous way. Personal dignity was flagrantly violated.
4. People were treated depending on their races and color of their skins; the superiority of the lineages were accepted as the unique superiority measure. People were not appraised according to their intelligence, knowledge, competence, morals and virtue.
5. There were no fundamental rights or freedoms. None of the fundamental rights or freedoms such as freedom of conscience and religion, right of property, freedom of having a residence, freedom of opinion were considered for an ordinary person. People were subjected to oppression and persecution because of their belief and opinions; and consciences were under oppression.
6. The fundamental principles of law were disregarded. It was even impossible to imagine fundamental judicial concepts like equality in law, domination of the laws, individuality and legality of the punishments. Personal desires and commands were deemed as law, different punishments were applied to the persons committing the same crime but belonging to different classes.
The religion of Islam came and committed the greatest revolution in the history of humanity when the world was in such a dark state.
If it is examined fair-mindedly, it can be seen that the ultimate humane targets that have been attained today were realized many centuries before the human rights declarations were published in the Western World both in the Noble Quran and in the practices of the Prophet (PBUH),
As a matter of fact, the principles included in the speech (the Farewell Sermon) the Prophet (PBUH) gave during his Farewell Hajj are the clearest examples about the issue.
This sermon was read in the year A.D. 632 in the presence of more than 100,000 Muslims. That is, 1157 years before the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which is regarded as the first written text concerning human rights.
The new principles Islam brought to human rights also had major effects on the struggle of the human rights in the West.
Man has a different value from the other beings. That value increases through belief in Allah and obedience to His commands. Thus, man becomes the most honorable guest in the universe. Man gets the value of humanity by his birth, in fact by the beginning of his formation in the uterus and he bears that value throughout his life.
The value of being a human surrounds everyone. Woman-man, elder-younger, black-white, weak-strong, poor-rich, no matter from what religion and nationality, race or color; the shadow of that compassion encompasses all.
Thus, Islam protects the blood of every person from being shed illegally, his chastity from being violated, his property from usurpation, his dwelling from being violated, his lineage from being deteriorated, his conscience from being under constraint. Islam assures the honor and dignity of humanity.
The fundamental rights and freedoms Islam has provided humanity are as follows:
1. Islam put an end to the discrimination of race and color. All people descended from Hazrat Adam. It is not possible for a person to choose his own race and color. It is completely by Allahs determination. It is extremely wrong and harmful to make discrimination and to regard some races and colors as supreme by condemning some races and colors both from the point of view of Islam and humanity.
Almighty Allah says in the noble Quran that He created mankind from a male and a female, and that when their numbers increased, he made them into nations and tribes so that they would know and help each other easily and they would make friends . (al- Hujurat, 13)
As it is seen, the fact that people are from different races and colors are not for superiority to each other but for getting acquainted with and helping each other.
An event illuminating that approach of Islam is as follows:
Abu Dharr, from the companions (sahaba), got angry with Bilal al-Habashi and insulted him by saying: Son of the black woman. He despised him because of his mothers color. When the Prophet (PBUH) was informed of the event, he got very angry and told Abu Dharr the following:
— O Abu Dharr. You have despised Bilal because of his mothers color, is that so? Then, you still have the mentality of the age of ignorance (jahiliyyah).
Hazrat Abu Dharr felt very sorry and repented for those words that slipped out of his mouth with a momentary anger without his intention. He began to cry, threw himself to the ground and put his face on the ground and he said:
— I swear, I wont raise my face from the ground unless Bilal threads and tramples on my cheek with his foot.
He apologized to Bilal al-Habashi repeatedly.
2. Islam put an end to the superiority of family and ancestry and being proud of that. During a meeting that the Companions (sahaba) were present, Sad b. Abi Waqqas offered some of the notables to mention the names of their ancestries. He named his ancestors from the beginning to the end. Salman al-Farsi, who was originally from Iran, was also present there, He didnt have a famous lineage as the notables of Quraish. He did not know his ancestors in detail, either. When Hazrat Sad offered him to name his ancestors, he found this offer strange and gave him this answer: I am Salman, son of Islam. I dont know my ancestors like you. I know one thing that Allah has honored me with Islam
Hazrat Umar also felt uncomfortable with that unnecessary offer of Sads about naming ancestors that reminded the mentality of the age of ignorance . He was so pleased with Salmans meaningful answer that he likened his answer to Salmans answer saying, I am Umar, the son of Islam, too.
When the Prophet (PBUH) heard the case, he also liked Salmans answer and he said: Salman is from me, from my family.
The Prophet demolished the mentality of ignorance based on the superiority of the lineages by giving the noblest families daughters in marriage to some companions that were slaves set free.
3. Islam brought the citizens the right to control and supervise their administrators. It aimed to put an end to the arbitrary management, injustice and illegality in the administration of the state. Hazrat Abu Bakr expressed that issue as follows in his speech when he was elected as the Caliph: O people! I have been elected as your administrator although I am not the best one among you. Obey me if I perform my duty in accordance with Islam. If I go astray, warn me.
One day, Hazrat Umar asked the Muslims in the mosque, If I go astray, what will you do? They replied: We will straighten you with our swords. Hazrat Umar was very pleased with that answer.
4. Freedom of Thought and Conscience. Freedom of thought and conscience is the most important human right after right of living. Not giving this right to man means reducing him to the degree of the animals by getting him out of his real essence. Therefore, Islam by no means allows thoughts and consciences to be kept under oppression. With the principle There is no compulsion in religion, Islam does not approve of making people accept the fundamentals of belief by force.
5. Islam has paid attention to the establishment of slavery painstakingly and brought it to a judicial regulation.
When the religion of Islam arose, slavery was prevalent as he most barbaric and inhuman practice all over the world. Islam, of course, could not have been expected to abolish that establishment completely that was prevalent all over the world. So, Islam did not choose to abrogate slavery completely at once but gave it the most humane and civil form by making great reforms regarding it. In addition, Islam supplied some formulae to make slavery abolish indirectly by increasing and facilitating the ways of passing to freedom from slavery.
6. Freedom of Property. Love of property and desire to have goods are among the various feelings Allah has given to man. That issue has been specified clearly in the Quran. Islam has given man the right to have property and has laid the groundwork for satisfying that feeling in a legal way. Nobody can interfere in any way with anybodys right of having property that Islam gives to him without his permission.
7. Equality before Law. Islam accepts all people equal before law like the teeth of a comb. Islam does not allow making a privileged treatment to the people in accordance with their social status and pedigrees.
In Islam, the dominance and the superiority of the laws are essential. The president and any of the citizens are treated equally before law. The guilty one is penalized even though he is a president. The most striking examples of it are that Fatih Sultan Mehmet and a Greek architect; Hazrat Ali and a Jewish; Salahaddin al- Ayyubi and an Armenian were taken to the court to be judged.
A woman from a noble family of the Mahzum tribe committed a theft on the conquest day of Mecca and she was caught in the act. She had to be punished. But, since the woman belonged to a noble family, they were afraid to blacken the name of the family so they wanted her to be forgiven and not to be punished. But how would they attain it? How would they tell it to the Prophet? Eventually, they sent Usama b. Zayd, the beloved one by the Prophet, to the Prophet as an envoy. Usama entered the presence of the Prophet and told him about the case. He asked him to forgive the guilty woman. The Prophet (PBUH) got very angry with this offer. He got out right away and made this historical speech:
O Muslims, do you know why the nations before you had been demolished and destroyed and had become a thing of the past? When a person from the notables committed a crime, they would not punish him. However, when an ordinary person committed a crime, they would desire strongly to apply the punishment. This injustice caused them to be destroyed. I swear, if the person committing the crime were my daughter Fatima, I would not hesitate to punish her at all.
Thereupon, the punishment was applied immediately.
The following sentences from the speech that Hazrat Abu Bakr made when he was selected as the Caliph also attract attention from that point of view: The weakest ones among you are the strongest before me till they take their rights. The strongest ones are the weakest before me till I take others rights from them.
8. Individuality and Legality of Punishment. In Islam, there can be no illegal punishment, and punishing somebody else instead of the person committing the crime is not in question.
The principle of the individuality of punishment is expressed in Chapter al-Anam as follows: Every soul draws the meed of its acts on none but itself: no bearer of burdens can bear the burden (sin) of another. (Verse: 164)
9. Independence and Impartiality of the Courts. Courts, which are the establishments for justice in Islam, have been kept away from all kinds of outer oppressions, personal animosities, spites andarbitrary applications; and the judges havent been allowed to lose their impartiality. In Islamic courts, presidents were tried with ordinary people and they were punished if they were found guilty.
10. Inviolability of Residence and Immunity of Private Life. In Islam, nobody has the right to interfere with an individuals private life and to enter his residence without his permission. In Islam, it is forbidden inspecting peoples confidential affairs.
11. Freedom of Travel. In Islam, traveling is accepted as a cause to learn lessons and to get healthy. Therefore, people are encouraged to travel.
12. Right of living, assurance of protecting lives, property and chastity from violation. That issue has been manifested in the most beautiful way in the Farewell Sermon by Allahs Messenger:
O people! Just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. They are protected from all kinds of violation.
13. Social Security. The religion of Islam patronizes man so that he wont be aggrieved and wretched due to old age, illness, disasters and accidents, and Islam takes the future of the needy under assurance through social security measures it supplies. Above all, Islam incites people to take themselves under assurance economically by encouraging them to work. Besides, Islam supplies a distinct security in the family, in the circle of neighbors and relatives by various measures it has taken. The state itself takes the individuals security under assurance when all of these security precautions are insufficient. The establishment of zakat (alms) and waqfs are the perfect social security foundations.
14. Freedom of Labor, Justice and Equality of Payment. In Islam, working and endeavoring are appreciated and encourageed greatly. Begging, being a burden to someone else is not welcomed. What is more, working to provide a living for ones family is regarded as worship as long as (fardhs) obligatory duties are performed. The verse, That man can have nothing but what he strives for. shows the importance Islam gives to endeavoring and working
Islam, which assures the freedom of working fully –on condition that it is a legal earning way-, also organizes the relationship between the employee and the employer in the nicest way.
The principle Pay the wages of a worker before his sweat dries assures the rights of workers in the perfect way.
The worker, in return, will try to complete the work assigned to him perfectly and completely and he will accept trying to deserve the wages he receives as a principle.
15. Patronage of Children. Islam patronizes children beginning from their birth; several aids are made to parents for their children nutrition and clothing expenses and subsidies are allocated from the treasury of the government. Today, that aid is supplied in all rich states under the name money for children. Allahs Messenger insistently warned the army of Islam against killing women and especially children in the wars.
16. Fundamental Education is Obligatory and Free of Charge. The hadith Seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim man and woman. makes the fundamental education obligatory. The curriculum of the fundamental education has been prepared very carefully in Islam.
The fundamental education includes vocational education besides religious, ethical and moral knowledge. Islam considers it necessary for children to be trained for a profession along with religious knowledge.

Ellison’s Law
Even for the early 1960s, Burke’s Law was a silly gimmick show.
The gimmick? Millionaire Amos Burke, despite inheriting fabulous wealth, always wanted to be a detective so he joined the LAPD and worked his way up to captain of the homicide bureau.
Basically Batman without the trauma or costume.
And like Batman of a few years later, an exercise in camp.
The show was rigidly formulaic, but for practical reasons. It relied heavily on stunt casting celebrities as suspects or witnesses and as such it had to be flexible enough to handle rewrites and re-castings in the middle of production.
The typical episode began with someone found murdered or shown getting killed in some unusual manner, cut to Amos Burke flirting with a lady only to be called away by his police duties. Cue the opening title as Burke and his driver hurry out of his relatively modest Beverly Hills mansion to his Rolls-Royce (actually producer Aaron Spelling’s car which he rented back to the production) as a sultry female voice incants: “It’s Burke’s Law” then after the first commercial break Burke arrives at the scene of the crime and finds clues pointing him to four or five suspects.
Said suspects are the celebrity guest stars, recruited either to give them some manic scenery chewing time or -- more rarely -- an intense dramatic scene.
After three more commercial breaks, Burke intones one of his “laws” (“Burke’s law: Never ask a question where you don’t already know the answer.”), pulls a rabbit out of his hat / solution out of his butt, and fingers that episode’s duly appointed murderer.
The problem with the series as a whole is that it could never quite decide on what tone it wanted to take and stick with it consistently. The British series The Avengers found the perfect balance of tongue-in-cheek / derring-do but Burke’s Law bounced all over the spectrum, frequently in the same episode.
So why bring up this mediocre TV show at all?
Two words: Harlan Ellison
. . .
I’ve posted many times before on Harlan’s career and the impact of his writing and friendship on me.
He was in the mid 1960s at his zenith as a TV writer, and while his writing career as a whole encompasses so much more than that, his brief run as one of the meteors streaking across the Hollywood sky only lasted 4 years.
Oh, he kept writing for TV after that, but the old zing was gone. He supplied stories for other series, created and fought hard to keep The Starlost on track but eventually had to walk away from that heartbreak, adapted several of his own short stories to a Twilight Zone revival, as well as numerous development deals that went nowhere (including two great ideas for The Name Of The Game, another Gene Barry series, that would have fit perfectly into that show’s oeuvre).
If you find his second book of TV criticism, The Other Glass Teat, check out his first draft for “The Whimper Of Whipped Dogs” episode of The Young Lawyers (not to be confused with his short story of the same title).
It’s one of the most powerful / gut wrenching things you’ll ever read…
…but by the time the studio and the network got through with it, the final product was virtually unrecognizable…and unwatchable.
Such was Harlan’s fate after 1967 in Clown Town (as he referred to it).
But from 1963 to 1967, he was golden.
. . .
Harlan’s rocky personal history went through many highs and lows before coming to Hollywood in 1962.
Harlan’s first breakthrough as a writer was with his series of stories and essays on juvenile crime in New York in the early and mid-1950s..
Drafted in 1957. following his discharge, he settled in Chicago with his second wife and her son, editing Rogue magazine, a Playboy imitator.
Feeling his personal life becoming untenable, he called in favors from a friend, drove out to California with his soon-to-be ex-wife and stepson (aware the marriage was over, she also wanted to relocate away from Chicago), made his first sale to TV (his short story “No Fourth Commandment” to the TV show Route 66), then briefly found a sweet spot with Burke’s Law, writing four teleplays for their first season.
Burke’s Law is a good crucible for examination because of its silly, gimmicky nature and rigid format requirements.
These scripts represent a pivotal point in Harlan’s writing career, but more importantly, they mark the only sustained run he enjoyed on a non-anthology show, and as such make a good benchmark in comparing his growth as a writer and how his unique perspective played out in in relation to the constraints of episodic television.
While a couple of Harlan’s better science fiction / fantasy stories were written before 1963, the meteoric rise of his career in those genres began with his classic short story “’Repent, Harlequin!’ Said The Ticktockman” in 1965, followed by a host of other groundbreaking short stories and novellas, and his original anthologies Dangerous Visions and Again, Dangerous Visions in which he recruited other science fiction and fantasy writers -- many of them already well established pros -- to follow the path he blazed in the genre.
His experience on Burke’s Law occurs squarely between what he once was to what he was becoming, and as such is worthy of attention.
SPOILER: There are no great hidden gems here.
There’s a lot of amusing writing, and a few flashes of the emotional intensity Harlan could provide, but by and large this is journeyman level stuff: Better than most, but not the best.
. . .
”Who Killed Alex Debbs?” was his first script for the series, and he pitched it to producer Aaron Spelling at a cattle call after a screening of the show’s pilot episode.
Harlan jump started the pitch process by improvising an idea off the cuff at the end of the screening, and Spelling took him to his office to hear how Harlan planned to resolve it, then hired him on the spot.
It’s unclear if Harlan was actually a staff writer on the series or simply hung out at the studio a lot, but he used his skills as a quick study to start working his way up the food chain.
His first script fulfills all the requirements of a Burke’s Law episode and shows off two of Harlan’s main strengths: An ability to hone in on intense emotion and a keen eye for the culture around him (in this case, very specifically Hollywood of the early 1960s).
On the downside, logic gaps render this story more implausible than most -- and as noted, Burke’s Law as a series wasn’t famous for its plausibility.
A flaw of almost all Burke’s Law episodes is that the victim is typically found dead under mysterious / bizarre circumstances, and the impression we get of them is constructed entirely through the words of suspects and witnesses.
It’s not an unworkable approach, but not the best suited for episodic television.
In this instance. victim Alex Drebbs is a Hugh Hefner-like men’s magazine publisher and monarch of a mini-empire of key clubs ala the Playboy Clubs of the era. Harlan captures that milieu well but here’s where the logic gaps hit hard: There’s no way a Hefner-like figure would be alone long enough for someone to kill him without being noticed, there’s no way his disappearance wouldn’t be immediately noticed by employees needing his attention, and it sure as hell wouldn’t have happened in a deserted club on the afternoon of its big opening.
On the plus side, there are some great character scenes including Arlene Dahl as a bitter ex-investor in Debbs empire now reduced to licking saving stamps to keep her decay mansion in repair, Burgess Meredith as a men’s magazine cartoonist who is nothing but a bundle of neurotic twitches and tics, and finally Sammy Davis Jr as Cordwainer Bird, the humor editor for Debbs’ magazine.
This was at the Robin Williams stage of Davis career, when all you had to do was point a camera in his direction and let him go. Harlan supplied the corny gags but Davis launched them over the top with his antics, and while he brings the proceedings to a complete disruptive halt, his brief scene is the most entertaining in the entire series. (Harlan later used Cordwainer Bird as his WGA pseudonym when he wanted to indicate displeasure at what had been done to his scripts.)
By his own account, Harlan had less luck with Diana Dors -- “the British Marilyn Monroe” -- and treated her condescendingly during the shoot. (By comparison, William Goldman in his memoir Adventures In The Screen Trade shows a much more sanguine / roll-with-the-punches attitude, and that might explain part of the reason his screenwriting trajectory was far different than Harlan’s.)
All in all, an uneven example of both the series and Harlan’s abilities.
. . .
”Who Killed Purity Mather?” was Harlan’s second script for the series and one of the few that played with the rigid format of the series insofar as the victim is seen alive for a few moments before being killed in a rather sadistic and spectacular manner (splashed with acid then trapped in a burning house, and the high angle shot used to show her demise must have been incredibly risky -- and thus costly -- to film).
It also drops a very subtle clue that I’ll reveal in the footnote.*
This is Harlan going so far over the top he emerges on the other side. Plotwise it features more logic gaps than his first script, but the whole thing is so silly it’s pointless to complain about it.
Purity Mather is a professional witch (!) who speeds up the investigation into her own demise by mailing Amos Burke a recording saying she’ll be killed along with a list of five possible suspects (that she doesn’t mention them by name in the recording reflects the show’s desire for standalone scenes, enabling them to recast and rewrite plotlines more easily; the scene where Burke reads the names to his team was doubtlessly shot after the guest cast was locked in).
Burke & co. start shaking down suspects, including Telly Savalas as Fakir George O'Shea, a Muslim holy man / cosmetics chemist (!!); Charlie Ruggles as I. A. Bugg, an eccentric elderly millionaire who likes to chase -- but not catch -- prostitutes around his apartment while dressed in lederhosen(!!!); Wally Cox as Count Carlo Szipesti, vampire for hire (!!!!); and Gloria Swanson as Venus Hekate Walsh a fright wig bedecked self-proclaimed goddess of free love (!!!!!).
The episode might as well have had a laugh track. It’s amusing with several daft touches only Harlan could provide, but the daftness comes from his take on Hollywood culture of the time.
I’d go so far as to say elements of Cox and Swanson’s characters were based on real life people living in and around Hollywood at the time, in particular some science fiction fans Harlan had come in contact with.
It’s a romp but a disappointing one. The logic gaps are too big in this one (case in point, if you’re the captain of the homicide bureau and you come home to see a masked figure climbing out of your second story window in broad daylight, you don’t simply shrug and let them run off) and the ending is one of those annoying ah-yes-now-that-you-caught-me-I-will-admit-everything-even-stuff-you-don’t-know cappers that Joe Ruby and Ken Spears would have rejected for Scooby Doo.
In short, a script whose parts are better than the whole.
. . .
”Who Killed Andy Zygmunt?" is another slight story that pays off with an insight into Hollywood pop culture of the era. The victim is “a pop artist” (no, he’s not; he an assemblage sculptor) impaled on his own artwork.
He’s also revealed to be an extortionist who acquires embarrassing evidence that he affixes to his assemblages then blackmails his victims into buying the art to keep their secrets safe.
Once again Burke is conveniently handed a list of suspects, in this case the people who bought the last five pieces of art from the exhibit.
This is one of the few times the series had more than one suspect in the same scene as there’s a big gathering in Burke’s office midway through the story (it also includes Michael Fox, a semi-regular on the series playing the coroner, so it represents a pretty sizeable filming day for the show). The suspects include Macdonald Carey as Burl Mason, the star of a popular TV detective show (Harlan gives his scenes what we would now call a meta-fiction touch by playing off Barry’s fictional TV detective dealing with a fictional fictional TV detective); Jack Weston as Silly McCree, a kid’s show host who destroys his career with an on air anti-child rant; Ann Blyth as Deirdre DeMara, a rival “pop artist” who creates her art by spraying women with paint and having them roll around on giant canvases (a gimmick later used in the bizarre 1966 Ann-Margaret comedy The Swinger); Aldo Ray as Mister Harold, former pro-wrestler turned poodle groomer; and Tab Hunter in a surprisingly well done scene as a sky diving playboy.
Hunter’s scene in particular shows Harlan getting his hyperbole under control, much more laconic and evocative than other characters he wrote for the series. As mentioned above, Burke’s Law occurs just on the cusp of Harlan’s huge success in print; he’s beginning to harness the lessons learned to maximum effect. (He would have some setbacks, too, in his screenwriting career, and to be honest part of that can be attributed to his failure to consistently apply the lessons learned, part of it can be attributed to his reputation preceding him, and part of it can be attributed to just bad luck.)
The motives this time are fairly edgy for a 1963 TV series, and combined with the slices of Los Angeles life Harlan provides give a fair example of the cultural zeitgeist of the era.
. . .
”Who Killed ½ Of Glory Lee?” can be explained as Benjamin Glory, half owner of Glory Lee Fashions, with Gisele MacKenzie as the other half, Keekee Lee.
After breaking the budget with his spectacular demise of Purity Mather, Harlan staged this murder as an inexpensive off camera elevator plunge.
This time the plot is a wee bit more plausible, with control of a profitable business being the apparent motive for the murder.
But Harlan loaded up this episode with a more powerful emotional punch than most of his others, and while the dénouement may feel a bit farfetched, it certainly rings true emotionally.
He certainly gave Nina Foch and Anne Helm plenty to work with regarding their characters’ complicated mother / daughter relationship, yet at the same time found room for a playful scene in which Buster Keaton pantomimes his answers to Burke’s questions.
Yet at the same time one senses an impatience behind the keyboard. The opening scene has a squad of female elevator operators (yes, once upon a time there needed to be somebody in the elevator to push the buttons for you) discussing pop culture references of a generation before -- Harlan’s generation.
And while the key emotional conflicts are played out well, several of the other scenes feel rather perfunctory…yet at the same time this is probably the most cohesive whole of any Burke’s Law script, whether written by Harlan or not.
It’s as if after a brief but profitable run on a network series, Harlan realized he’d absorbed as much of the practical end of the business as he could and his next moves should be into broader, edgier territory.

* SPOILER: Purity Mather is the murderer; she connives a career nudist (!!!!!!) to participate in a magic ceremony then disfigures and kills her, leaving evidence that she hopes will convince the police the body is hers. The subtle clue Harlan drops is the victim, wearing a long black negligee, complaining about how she doesn’t like the feel of the clothes. A nice touch, but undercut by Purity then going to the nudist camp her victim operates and waiting in the buff by the front gate for the police to show up and question the career nudist -- whom Purity has mentioned as a suspect in her faked murder. While it works insofar as Purity doesn’t try to pass herself off to anyone else at the camp as the career nudist, it doesn’t scan that she would know when the police would come to investigate or if they could be easily convinced at the gate and not come in to question other patrons.

A brief history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (without Yemen)
Arabia is a large piece of desert land situated in Western Asia. It was inhabited by many individual tribes know as Bedouins. Some Bedouin communities are still around today.
Example of how the Saudi military would have looked like.
Solid gold watches with Saud’s face printed in the middle where given as gifts to friends of the crown.
King Faisal was declared as Time magazine’s ‘Man Of The Year’ for his progressive views and actions.
In the 7th century the religion of Islam was founded by the Prophet Muhammad (PuH) who built Mosques in Mecca and Medina, which were territories in Arabia. These places had and have holy significance to Muslims (followers of the religion of Islam) all around the world, and would be the most important destinations for Islamic pilgrims. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (not related to the Prophet Muhammad) started a new, very radical strand of Islam called Wahhabism in the 18th century. He had extreme beliefs about the importance of going to battle, the rights of women, and the prohibition of technical innovation. Wahhabism’s central belief is that Muslims is that modernisation is sinful and so seek to live their lives as though they are still in the 7th century. Although this strand starkly contradicted the peaceful message of Islam, many people did adopt this belief system and are called Wahhabi’s. Wahhabis still believe that they hold the one true doctrine and recognise people belonging to other belief systems (including other Muslims) as their enemy. One Bedouin tribe was the Saud family. In the mid 18th century, the visionary leader of the tribe, Muhammad ibn Suad, wanted to gain power over all the other tribes and conquer Arabia. To do this, they needed a military, but they had none. They needed the help of the Wahhabis.
The Wahhabis would give their military to the Saud family in exchange for political and religious influence when the family succeeded in ruling the area. An alliance was born. Slowly but surely the Saud family conquered major parts of Arabia. In 1924, the leader of the tribe Abdul Aziz bin Rama al Saud (or ‘ibn Saud’ for short) took over Mecca and Medina. The family gained much of it’s wealth and power by charging pilgrims who came to visit these holy sites. Now that lots of Arabia was conquered by the Saud family and the tribes who allied with them, the area is recognised as ‘The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’ meaning the parts of Arabia belonging to the Saudi family. The Wahabis now had more authority including control over the educational and legal systems. A new source of revenue presented itself to the Saudi’s when oil was found in neighbouring countries. Ibn Saudi sought to take advantage of this and allowed the Oil Company of Souther California to find and drill oil reserves in Saudi Arabia. This was at the time of the Great Depression where oil was scarce in America. President Roosevelt knew that he needed to make an alliance with Saudi Arabia in order to obtain its vast amounts of oil. The wealth of Saudi family boomed, and ties grew strong between the West and Saudi Arabia. After Ibn Saud died, his brother Suad was appointed ruler of Saudi Arabia. Yet, it was suspected that he could not be trusted with money due to his extravagant lifestyle and the Kingdom would soon run into dept. The Wahhabis also disapproved of his relationship with the Egyptian president and socialist Gamal Nasser (who had Soviet connections). He was declared unfit to rule and was replaced by his brother Faisal, who became the regions most popular monarchs. King Faisal worked to propel the Kingdom into the modern age, introducing better hospitals, opening schools for girls and the abolishing slavery with the help of John F Kennedy, all against the will of the Wahhabis. Furthermore, King Faisal did not support the state of Israel which meant that relations were damaged between Saudi and the United States. King Faisal was later assassinated. The Wahhabis were angered by the Soviets invasion in neighbouring Afghanistan. Saudi Arabia and America’s mutual disapproval of the Soviet Union worked to re-strengthen their relationship and America supplied Saudi Arabia with weapons, money and military training to the Saudi troops to help defeat the Soviets. A young Osama Bin-Laden was one of Saudi fighters who fought in Afghanistan. In 1990, the dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussain, invaded Kuwait. The Saudi monarch invited American and foreign militaries to station themselves inside their Kingdom to help fight against Saddam Hussain. This was objected by the radical religious authorities since they did not want foreign forces on their lands. To satisfy the conservatives, King Fahad *directed more funds towards them. This solution backfired since now that the radicals had more power, they sought to make Saudi Arabia a much more conservative place again. This involved removing women’s rights to study and work, and introducing more funding to conservative movements outside the Kingdom. Some American troops stayed after the Gulf war, which aggravated these groups even more, leading to a rise in terrorism against Americans living in Saudi Arabia. There are speculations that this triggered the horrific events of 9 11. The UK’s Serious Fraud Office started an investigation to verify the claim that some Saudi officials took bribes from major arms manufacturer, BAE systems. The investigation was ordered to be stopped by then Prime Minister Tony Blair and many where upset by his unpecedented compromise of the UK’s judicial systems and ideals of democracy. This is just another example of how the West will readily break down their values just to keep Saudi Arabia happy, so that they can keep their profitable ties with the kingdom, such as selling them weapons. The new King Abdullah wanted to modernise Saudi Arabia again and move away from the conservative religious establishments. He also sought to expand his economy by trading with other countries like India and China. Saudi Arabia is investing more money into education and sciences so that it can be less dependant on its finite natural resource and work to establish itself as a stable economy in the future. In 2009, King Abdullah announced that he was dismissing ultra-conservatives from their high positions. By distancing themselves from their tribal Bedouin roots, progress is being made today. For example, female ministers are being appointed, there are many more career and business opportunities and international artists are invited to perform concerts inside the Kingdom. Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman has publicly promised to end Saudi extremism. It is a shame that many people fail to educate themselves about the religion which is represented by one quarter of our worlds population. By lack of the want to learn more about the world around us, many people only see the radical strands of Islam, such as Wahhabism, and are quick to slur this mislead idea onto of the whole of Islam. I myself have met a shocking amount of non-Muslims who are certain that Islam is a violent, backward, women hating religion, even while the strong majority of Muslims support the Islamic ideals of peace, innovation and protection of human rights, just as the Prophet Muhammad tried to push for thousands of years before.

Pari Khan Khanum was the second daughter of Shah Tahmasp I and his wife Sultan-Agha Khanum. She was her father’s favorite daughter and some historians dispute if her father had her marry Badi-al Zaman Safavi, or if it only was an engagement due to her father not wanting her to leave court to Sistan. Pari was a key figure in Safavid affairs at the end of her father’s reign, and with her being tired of her bureaucratic life he gave her authority and legal power. When her half brother, Haydar Mirza Safavi tried to claim he was the Shah after Tahmasp’s death, he had Pari as a hostage due to her political influence. She was reported to have begged him in front of his mother to allow her to leave the palace but Haydar refused. She then convinced him that she would change the mind of people who supported Ismail Mirza Safavi (later Ismail II and Tahmasp’s true heir) to support Haydar. He gave her the keys but the moment she left the grounds, she broke her promise to Haydar and handed the keys to the palace to Ismail II who took his rightful place as Shah. During the power struggle of Ismail and Haydar Pari was de facto ruler of the state of Iran. She gathered all the nobles and religious figures together at Qazvin’s main mosque and got them to support Ismail. During her time as hostage she was informed about urgent or fiscal business with the realm by Qizilbash warriors. However, Isamil II grew cold towards Pari and was not kind to her in his later life. When he died, the statesmen asked Pari if she would take the throne, and she declined. Pari put Mohammad Khodabanda on the throne and ruled through him since he was of old age and was nearly blind. And anything he had proposed, statesmen would have him seek Pari’s advice first and her approval on anything. She was given money and gifts from soldiers, court, and the people. When Shah Mohammad’s wife Khayr al-Nisa Begum found out that Pari was still alive and making political moves, she realized she as the consort had no influence. Feeling threatened by Pari, Khayr had been kidnapped by her old tutor and strangled her to death. Pari was 29 when she died and her place of burial is unknown.

Victims of the Childbed - Isabella of Aragon, Princess of Asturias and Queen of Portugal
The complicated life of Isabella, eldest child of the Catholic Monarchs. She represented a future for the ruling houses of Castile and Aragon that would never be fully realized after her early death.
Her full story is long, so I put it below the cut:
Princess Isabella was born on October 2, 1470, two weeks before her parents’ first wedding anniversary. Isabel of Castile and Fernando of Aragon welcomed their first child and she was well loved. Politically, however, the birth of a son would have won support for their cause. At the time of Isabella’s birth and for the first four years of her life, her parents were at odds with her maternal uncle, Enrique IV of Castile. Enrique was enraged at Isabel for marrying Fernando without his permission. Tensions between the royal siblings were high and worsened as Isabel contended with Enrique’s young daughter Juana de Trastamara (called “la Beltraneja”) for the position of heir to Castile. A baby boy would have strengthened Isabel’s claim. Nevertheless, Isabella was a fine, healthy child and spent her early years at her parents’ court.
In December 1474, Isabel ascended to the throne of Castile upon King Enrique’s death. As she was an only child, little Isabella seemed to be her mother’s heir apparent, though this was a contentious issue and would arise again over two decades later. She was joined by a brother, Juan, Prince of Asturias, in 1478. Isabel’s succession was not smooth. Almost immediately after she was crowned, the War of the Castilian Succession broke out between Isabel in Castile and Afonso V of Portugal (husband to Juana de Trastamara). At one point during this war, seven-year-old Isabella was staying in Segovia when an uprising broke out. The young princess was trapped in a tower of the Alcázar until her mother retook Segovia.
The war with Portugal ended in 1479 with Isabel emerging as the victor and her niece Juana being banished to a convent. With the birth of her son and heir, Isabel’s power was consolidated. The Treaty of Alcáçovas was signed and settled the conflict between Afonso V of Portugal and the Catholic Monarchs. Included in the treaty was a contract for Isabella’s marriage. To cement the new peace with Portugal, eight-year-old Isabella was betrothed to King Afonso’s grandson, Prince Afonso, who was five years her junior.
A year later Isabella left Spain for Portugal with a generous dowry, though she was sent to Portugal as part of a semi-hostage exchange to ensure adherence to the treaty. She and Afonso were not to marry for some years, but Isabella was regarded as the future queen of Portugal and was educated as such. After spending three years in Portugal learning the language and customs of her future subjects, Isabella returned to her family. There was a gap of eight years between Isabella and her brother Juan, but following his birth three sisters arrived in quick succession- Juana, Maria, and Catherine in 1485. Isabella and her siblings would have had a unique education at their mother’s court, and as the eldest daughter and only son, Isabella and Juan were particularly close to their parents.
Isabella would have observed the partnership between her parents, both being rulers in their own right. The five children of the Catholic Monarchs grew up in a court that was intellectual and artistic as well as intensely pious. Though Isabella saw the return of order and strict rule of law to Spain during Queen Isabel’s time, her young mind was also undoubtedly shaped by the most unsavory aspects of her parents’ reign. She was a child when the Spanish Inquisition was established. The persecution of Jews by means of expulsion, forced conversion, and execution was not altogether new in medieval Europe. Being brought up in a vehemently devout Catholic family, the ideas of the Inquisition were justified to Isabella from childhood. She would go on to retain such views in her adult life. A considerable amount of time during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs was spent on campaign, namely the Reconquista; the conquest of the remaining Muslim territories occupied by the Moors. Isabella was present alongside her parents at the surrender of Almería in 1489, and saw the fall of Granada, the last Moorish territory in Spain, later in 1492.
By 1490, Prince Afonso was fifteen and considered mature enough for marriage. Now twenty, Isabella returned to Portugal that November, where her marriage was solemnized. The couple soon proved to be a love match and were “all happy and content.” Afonso and Isabella’s happiness was short-lived. Tragedy struck in July 1491, after eight months of marriage, when Afonso died in a riding accident. Her husband’s sudden death left Isabella shocked and bereft, and perhaps left a lasting effect on her mental health. She blamed Afonso’s accident on God’s displeasure at Portugal for accepting Jewish refugees fleeing from Spain. At this point in her life, Isabella turned to religion, taking the devoutness instilled in her by her mother to obsessive levels.
Vowing to never marry again, Isabella returned to her family a changed woman. She regularly scourged and starved herself. To modern eyes, her actions might be seen as self harm instead of religious devotion. Though she would have preferred to spend her remaining days in prayer and self-denial, Isabel and Fernando had other plans for their daughter. When Isabella’s former father-in-law, João II of Portugal, died in 1495 he was succeeded by his cousin Manuel. The new king became a suitor for Isabella’s hand and while her parents tried to persuade him to accept her sister Maria as a bride instead, Manuel insisted on Isabella. A battle of wills ensued for a year while Isabella continually refused to marry and her parents pressed her to accept Manuel. Finally in 1497 Manuel’s proposal was accepted on the condition that he persecute and expel all Jews from Portugal for Isabella could not marry into a country where they were at all tolerated. Manuel, also quite devout and probably already planning to do so, agreed and they were married in September 1497 in a ceremony that was quiet and sober in accordance with the bride’s wishes.
Just before her wedding, unbeknownst to her, Isabella’s brother Juan suddenly fell gravely ill. He died on October 4 to his family’s grief. Soon afterwards his wife, Margaret of Austria, miscarried their child. With these calamities, Isabella became heir apparent to Castile and Aragon. She was made Princess of Asturias and was recognized with Manuel as her mother’s heir, but the Aragonese were not keen on the idea of a female ruler.
Soon after being declared heir, Isabella became pregnant. It was hoped this baby would be a son who could inherit the crowns of Castile, Aragon, and Portugal. While staying with her parents in Zaragoza, Isabella went into labor. She had become very thin, weakened by constant fasting and frequent travel. It was a long and difficult labor. On August 28, 1498, Isabella gave birth to a baby boy. There was immediate rejoicing at the birth of an heir, but her family’s joy soon turned to sorrow. Isabella was now weakened beyond repair by a hemorrhage and died within an hour of the birth, with her parents at her side. Her last wishes were to be buried in a nun’s habit at the Convent of Santa Isabel in Toledo.
The son of Isabella of Aragon and Manuel I of Portugal was called Miguel de Paz and he was the only consolation to Isabella’s bereft parents and husband. But Miguel too died just before his second birthday. With Isabella and her son died the plan for the union of the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula under one crown.

As a transgender woman growing up in Brunei, Zoe saw the country’s slide toward conservatism from an early age, so plans to introduce strict new Islamic laws this week came as no surprise.
The 19-year-old, who was born male but identified as female from early childhood, is now awaiting the outcome of her asylum application in Canada after fleeing her country late last year.
“Even before Sharia law, LGBT+ people could be prosecuted under civil law,” Zoe told the Thomson Reuters Foundation, which is identifying her by only one name for her protection.
“I’ve always been scared of living my life openly in Brunei. I still am. I still think about how I present myself, because I was conditioned to survive.”
Brunei, a Muslim-majority former British protectorate with a population of about 400,000, is due to implement Sharia laws from April 3, punishing sodomy, adultery and rape with the death penalty, and theft with amputation.
The laws, elements of which were first adopted in 2014, could see LGBT+ people whipped or stoned to death for same-sex activity. Some aspects of the laws will apply to non-Muslims.
“I knew it was going to happen,” said Zoe, who hopes to one day undergo hormone therapy and formally change her name to the one she sometimes goes by.
“Our oil reserves were dwindling and the sultan needed a way to control the economy once he started to enforce taxes and reduce the high subsidies.”
The Brunei Prime Minister’s Department did not respond to an emailed request for comment on Monday.
Brunei does not hold elections and any discontent is assuaged with generous government polices including zero taxes, subsidized housing, and free healthcare and education.
Zoe, who is worried that her LGBT+ friends back in Brunei do not fully appreciate how dangerous the situation will soon become, faces an uncertain future.
“If I get sent back to Brunei, I will confess who I am and what I believe in to the Bruneian authorities,” she said.
“I’d rather die being true to myself than resenting a long life. I wish that Muslims who want Sharia law just keep it with themselves and God. Not enforce it onto other people.”
ASIA’S SILENCE
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 72, is the world’s second-longest-reigning monarch and prime minister of oil-rich Brunei. He ranks as one of the world’s wealthiest people.
Since details of the new laws were announced, actor George Clooney and musician Elton John are among celebrities who have called for a boycott of hotels owned by the government-owned Brunei Investment Agency.
Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights have all called on Brunei to abandon changes to its penal code.
“It is seriously regrettable that Brunei’s decision contravenes a number of international norms on human rights,” New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters said in a statement on Sunday.
Matthew Woolfe, founder of human rights group The Brunei Project, said it was now very unlikely that Brunei would backtrack, but diplomatic pressure from Asian countries could help ensure the laws were not enforced fully.
“We want to see more Asian governments coming out and speaking out on this. They have been too quiet,” said the Australia-based campaigner.
Socially conservative attitudes prevail across Asia, with Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore banning sexual relationships between men, while Indonesia has seen an increase in raids targeting LGBT+ people in recent years.
Members of the Association of South East Asian Nations, which did not respond to requests for a comment, have a principle of non-interference in each others’ domestic affairs.
“I’m not aware of any Asian country having come out and said anything about these laws,” said Woolfe.
‘BARBARIC LAWS’
Brunei, which neighbors two Malaysian states on Borneo island, already enforces Islamic teachings more strictly than Malaysia and Indonesia, the other majority Muslim countries in Southeast Asia.
Previously homosexuality was illegal in Brunei and punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment, while the sale of alcohol is banned and evangelism by other religions is forbidden.
Ging Cristobal, project coordinator at OutRight Action International in Manila, urged other Muslim countries in the region to put pressure on Brunei.
“In reality, Brunei will not succumb to pressure from countries that are not Muslim-majority countries,” said Cristobal.
“Brunei might say that other regions are imposing on Asia, so it would be good to see other Asian nations condemn these barbaric laws.”
BETTER TO LEAVE
Shahiransheriffuddin bin Shahrani Muhammad is gay man who fled Brunei last year after being charged with sedition for a Facebook post that was critical of the government.
Now seeking asylum in Canada, the 40-year-old was surprised at the speed with which the new Sharia laws were being implemented.
“I expected it to happen, just not so soon,” he said. I thought there would be more time for people like me in Brunei to realize that it’s better to leave.”
Many people in Brunei back the Sharia laws because of rising unemployment and crime, he said.
The death penalty has rarely been used in Brunei and the burden of proof needed to secure a conviction for same-sex activities is very high, he added.
Nonetheless, for LGBT+ people, the prospect of going to trial is terrifying, carrying the risk of being the first person to be stoned, he added.
Even if exonerated, they face being stigmatized for the rest of their lives - Cristobal said the new laws gave license “for other people to see LGBTIQ (people) as criminals and commit violence and abuse toward them”.
Khairul, 19, is a gay Muslim man living in Brunei who now fears for his future.
“With the added laws that affect the LGBTQ+ community, I am scared,” said Khairul, who asked not to be identified by his real name for fear of reprisals. “My life here will become more complicated and hard.
“The fear of dying has become a reality, while the hope of being accepted by family is now just a dream.”

The word "Ottoman" is a historical Anglicisation of the name of Osman I, the founder of the Empire and of the ruling House of Osman (also known as the Ottoman dynasty). Osman's name in turn was derived from origin. In Ottoman Turkish, the empire was referred to as Devlet-i ʿAliyye-yi ʿOsmâniyye or alternatively Osmanlı Devleti. In Modern Turkish, it is known as Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ("Ottoman Empire") or Osmanlı Devleti ("The Ottoman State"). In some Western accounts, the two names "Ottoman" and "Turkey" were often used interchangeably. This dichotomy was officially ended in 1920–23, when the Ankara-based Turkish regime chose Turkey, which had been one of the European names of the state since medieval times, as the sole official name. * The Imperial House Of The World - United World 1- Ottoman Empire 2- Flags 3- History 4- Rise - Growth 5- Expansion and apogee 6- Revolts and revival - stagnation and reform 7- Government 8- law 9- Military 10- Administrative divisions 11- Economy 12- Demographics 13- Language 14- Religion 15- Culture 16- Literature 17- Architecture 18- Decorative arts 19- Performing arts 20- Cuisine 21- Science and technology Fundamental laws Instrument of Government... I wanna coin a term:
Cismisogyny
the misogyny that cisnormative people utilize is focused on "biological/natal sex" and birth assigned gender, as well as intersex erasure, and is basically just glorified genital supremacy. that people with penises have power over people with vaginas, and therefore people with a uterus are inferior. it's a very particular type of sexism that's a blend of transphobia and misogyny but from a cis lens.
transmisogyny is specifically prejudice against what they deem to be trans women (as they're unaware that "passing" trans women exist), so cismisogyny would be specifically prejudice against what they deem to be cis women (or what they would just say is women), and is a separate notion entirely from the misogyny that misogynist trans men and misogynist but not transphobic cis men (and brainwashed dumb white blonde haired blue eyed bimbo trophy wives for conservative men so think a cookie cutter carbon copy of tomi lahren) frequently feel.
so to clarify:
Misogyny: hating all women
Transmisogyny: hating trans women
Transphobia*: hating trans people in general
(*includes gender binarism and truscum)
Cismisogyny: hating people with vaginas, indeterminate of whether they're trans or not
...
It's a very specific term but it describes a very specific type of sexism, you see. As someone who does not have a vagina, is transgender, and has the benefit of viewing things from an objective standpoint due to autism, it's a very disturbing trend I see in many parts of society. Even here on Tumblr.
I just saw a take that was blaming trans men and dfab nonbinary people for the lack of trans women's voices in trans spaces, and saying that they are silent about it because the silent oppression of trans women benefits them. A very cold take indeed. Trans men and dfab nonbinary people aren't responsible for the transmisogyny. Cis people are. And the reason why is because cis people typically are usually also male supremacists. If what a cis person perceives to be a male tries to "become a female" such as trans women and dmab nonbinary people (because cis people and male supremacists typically are also binarists), that is them rejecting the privilege society awarded us for having the magic Y chromosome that allows humans to be treated with dignity and respect. If what a cis person perceives to be a female tries to "become a male" such as a trans man or a dfab nonbinary person (see my prior parenthical remark), that is them attempting to reject femininity and embrace the superiority of masculinity, which accepts them into their ranks.
So trans men and dfab nonbinary people are typically lauded by many cis male-supremacist people are socially acceptable, especially since many of them seem to be okay with tomboys and women wearing suits and just a general overall sense of women embracing masculinity and rejecting femininity. That's acceptable to a bunch of white christian post-colonials. And of course degenerates would feel it's an "added bonus" to ~get~ to see breasts and vaginas in the locker room because tHaTs sO hOt.
But dmab people who identify as anything but men? Absolutely loathsome, in cis eyes, because femininity is EVIL and BAD and INFERIOR.
Cissexism is of course a definition I've seen, but it seems to be basically a synonym for transphobia. But see, while cismisogyny as I am describing it is indeed rooted in transphobic ideology, it doesn't seem to be in and of itself explicitly transphobic. I'll have to explain that.
Like. All white people are racist. Every person with white skin color benefits from the privilege accompanying it, at the expense of the people who don't. We perform microaggressions that we don't notice all the time. We absorb all of the negativity and racism society forcefeeds us, subliminal propaganda, and it releases itself. Now, a white person could actively fight and campaign for black rights. They could respect black culture and art. They could listen to and understand wu tang clan without ever letting a slur pass their lips. They could date black people who don't find them racist. They could be the least racist person you've ever met. But they would still be at least somewhat racist because that's how human development works. But just because they're not republican or a 4channer, don't laugh at lynching jokes, don't use slurs, don't treat black people as less or inferior, don't literally murder black people, that doesn't mean they aren't racist at all. It just means they're not specifically that kind of overt explicitly violent antiblackness like the kkk. It's a different tier of racism. It's not as severe or as noticeable, but it's still racism.
And it's the same way with cis people. Many cis people are supportive of trans people on the surface. They'll smile and welcome you into their homes and hug you and walk you to the bathroom and respect your name/pronouns and go clothes shopping with you and be the shoulder to cry on when someone attacks them and fight congress for your rights and punch a transphobic asshole in the face. But they still can & do perform transphobic microagressions for no other reason than society instilled those ideals in their heads since birth when they put the M or F on your birth certificate or in slightly rarer cases performed surgery on your infant genitals without parental consent. They can sympathize, they can attempt to empathize, but they will never fully understand. And that's okay. If they try, that's good enough.
Just as there are many tiers of racism there are many tiers of transphobia. Cismisogyny is one such tier that intersects with binarism and standard misogyny. People who aren't typically transphobic could still be cismisogynist. Even I can admit to experience cismisogyny in my life through sexual exploitation. My orientation is bisexual with a strong preference towards cis women, trans men, and dfab nonbinary people. I don't want it to be like that. And it's not like cis men, trans women, and dmab nonbinary people are not attractive to me, because they are (unf chris hemsworth 👌🏻🤤), but due to the social conditioning in my being born and raised a "straight white christian red blooded hoosier man" and the cismisogyny accompanying that, the entitlement complex that manifested side by side with my "nice guy in the friend zone" complex, that I didn't unlearn until after I was already a fully grown adult, that's how my brain be like. I recognize it in myself, and that's how I know that it exists. And it took that ignorant shitty post for me to actually be able to put these thoughts in writing.
I don't blame trans men and dfab nonbinary people for my social isolation and distinct lack of friends who are also trans women. I don't blame this new wave of drag kings and bio queens. I blame cissexism, cisheteropatriarchy, transphobia, transmisogyny, and cismisogyny. I blame the people responsible for the situation of our society. I don't blame my brothers, my siblings, my friends and family. I won't throw them under the bus, just as they didn't throw me under. We're all in this together, and I'm glad that they're having less difficulty than I am in that specific situation. Especially because due to my aforementioned objectivity, I've also noticed all of the hatred and vitriol hurled towards them, especially by dudebro gamer culture. I've seen it. I know it's there.
So I know I'm not really popular online. Very few people know me. My only claim to fame is the "aliens: [slide $40 to nasa] nasa: lmao what aliens" post and even then they don't know the individual URLs of the three of us involved. In fact I'm pretty sure the number of people I'm blacklisted by and blocked by is double my follower count. Even with the bots. Maybe even triple. Things I've said taken out of context have in the past made me look like I'm racist, transmisandrist, a sexual predator, a fucking rape apologist, and worst of all a person who "didn't get a joke" that I ignored heaving pile of religious intolerance that hates jews, muslims, christians, and... everyone else (people who weren't judeochristian didn't seem to care). Certain circlejerks herald me as a king of clowns of a sort (I'd say queen but they were mostly transphobic lmao). So I know that this post will get ignored. Maybe two or three people will like it. Maybe one person will reblog it... like that one crimson lady monarch, or the mildly irked homosexual wyvern, you two know who you are. Maybe nobody will. And looking back it's much more likely for a bunch of dumb uglyass terf cunts taking my sexual preferences bit out of context to make all trans women look like evil sex predators, than any people will see my vocabulary suggestion. But there is a reason why I'll hit post and not delete.
Cismisogynist trans women don't speak for me. Despite the problematic microaggressions my shit tier bad brain development perpetuates, despite what any ignorant cis tries to tell me, despite all of that shit... if you try to talk shit about my family I will obliterate you.
