Krypto the Superdog: Season 1 Episode 13a

The episode ‘The Living End’ opens with Krypto and the Dog Star Patrol moving space rocks, with Mammoth Mutt’s inflation powers utilised in a very specific and unusual way - inflating her hands. This is something that’s not been done before as previous cases were just her entire body, but here she’s capable of channeling expansion into, amusingly, the areas that are normally not inflated on the whole. The front paws grow to approximately three times her own body’s size, the digits rounded at the top while being distinct from each other, the overall shape being curved on the back while the front is only slightly so to help scoop rocks. Despite the clear contrast between paws and body, there’s no difficulty in managing these huge hands, Mammoth Mutt is in total control. (Pic 1)

The same definitely can’t be said for the next scene. Krypto’s tail comes alive and separated from him through Red Kryptonite which was amongst the rocks, and said the titular living end starts to cause ruckus on Earth. Tusky Husky team up to keep the tail secured in a large hole in the city streets - once the former makes the hole and the tail falls down, the latter essentially plugs it up with her huge belly, which is the first we see of her as she gets right on the action, her left legs seen on her tan underside. However, in the next shot, we see the legs are much further apart with the front on the underside and back ones sticking out against the pink fur. The proportions look a little off as we see Mutt’s full state, since although she appears to be positioned straight, the back legs are raised up higher than the front ones, which would only be fine if she was actually tilted downwards. That’s one constant with MM’s scenes - the leg positioning can be awkward, and more so when they might be positioned on the tan underbelly despite colour contrast. Mutt initially look at the hole from her viewpoint with a satisfied eyes half-closed smile before staring at her partner and celebrates their victory by joking, in her deeper voice, “Like they say in the story books, that’s how the tail ends!” A nice touch is how the rolls shift around as she turns her head. Unfortunately this seemingly flawless plan backfires - the tail starts tickling her belly, the first tickle making her exclaim and body tense up before this unexpected attack continues, making her tilt up, down and up again as the tail ignores her pleas to stop amidst deep laughter. Mutt finds herself rolling away from the hole while the tail happily resumes tormenting her. (Pic 2)

All this intense tickling rolls the lady back more and more in a shot that shows how large she is compared to Tusky Husky. Initially the shot just shows him and the hole in the ground before she and her shadow roll into view while continuing to laugh, said spherical shadow reaching closer to him. Mutt winds up taking up most of the screen as her puffed up presence dominates most of the corners, and this view of her allows us to see the head that’s otherwise entrenched in rolls. The use of shadows it well done in this shot, not just the aforementioned shadow between her and Tusky, but how the Mammoth Mutt rolls back and displays just how monumental she is. Tusky tries to run away to avoid getting squashed, only he’s not quick enough and thus gets flattened by the quickly rolled Mutt, which is a fun bit of slapstick and shows how fast Mutt can roll. With Krypto’s tail still on the loose, a defeated Mammoth Mutt rolls onscreen back-first and lies upside down next to Krypto, a swollen belly facing the air as she dominates the screen. The deflation has her expand like taking in a great breath of air before shrinking down as though exhaling. The frames have the body stay hugely round with the frame before the normal size emphasising more roundness on the back than the belly. Once Mutt’s deflated, she falls to the ground, followed by the next shot of her relaxing the upright limbs onto the ground, pondering how the heroes are going to stop the tail at this rate. (Pic 4)

Krypto comes up with a clever solution, cutting to the next scene with Mammoth Mutt’s belly being painted black to create a pair of eyes and a large dark mouth. The process is very ticklish for her, thankfully she’s able to breathe easily once that’s finished. And so the plan kicks off as the tail is confronted by the gargantuan sight of an apparent monster. In this bombastic belly-boasting, Mutt’s inflated form has the limbs stick out, with the upright position and angle meaning that no head rolls are seen. She swells her body up enough to make it appear the ‘face’ is aggressively roaring at the tail, chasing him to flee. (Pic 5)

The tail runs back to Krpyto and rejoins him out of fear and a need for safety. Mammoth Mutt enters the shot with her lower left side sliding down with the belly and bottom left leg appearing at first. We see more of the monster belly’s mouth and eyes alongside the left arm that sticks out at a point that looks quite low but not out of place with the wide shot of Pic 5. Her head eventually pops into view with the collar nesting at the bottom, giving the head a raised propped up look at looks jarring compared to the gradually smaller ball body. The body reaches a point to about twice the size of the head before the pink of her fur appears again, before the figure gains a plump look then regains its slender shape. As she deflates, her deep rich voice is initially heard in making a joke with Krypto. Mutt’s left in the air for a second before settling back to the ground on all fours, finishing her one-liner in the normally sweet voice (Pic 6)

Krypto the Superdog: Season 1 Episode 3 Part 4

The final inflated scene with Mammoth Mutt in her debut has her deal with a pair of cats transformed into large, ferocious sabretoothed felines setting their eyes and claws on Krypto. Just when they lunge straight at the cape-clad canine, the duo are immediately sent to the ground. As the shot pans out and shifts across, we see that a blown-up Mammoth Mutt is responsible, her body positioned in such a way that her enormous rear has pinned the cats down by their tails, which she states in a one-liner. (Pic 1)

There are a few things to make note of here. Unlike the previous instance, the collar is gone, leaving just the heart attached to it. After the bouncy, ball-shaped look from earlier and all the lightness pertained from it, Mutt's body is shown in a sitting position with the backside planted on the ground; the tails buried underneath disrupt the smooth ball design with fat flesh lifted around them, showing that anything with enough presence can affect her form, and this combined with the sitting makes her feel less like a light balloon and more of a heavy mountain of fat. This is also the first time all of her legs are seen while inflated, the hind legs distinctly in two folds per leg compared to the single folds surrounding the front. As Mutt speaks, the folds entrenching the neck shift subtly, they're not just static but bend depending on the position of her head. Her neck can clearly be seen to stick out compared to being closed off by the tight surrounding rolls before. Finally, the scene is the debut of her inflated voice, sounding appropriately deep and husky, a guttural tone that carries the weight she masterfully wields. (Pic 2)

The last shot of the scene and her inflated girth as a whole in the episode has the cats under her watch turned back to norma, smiling in assurance that they’re fully dealt with. The perspective of Mammoth Mutt here is awkward, since her head and tanned belly look to lean forward rather than upright like before, which doesn’t match the angle of the road. Her hind leg can be seen sticking out but the tan underside is drawn with curved lines bending inwards to the torso rather than outwards. The distance of the cats make it appear their tails aren’t anywhere near her backside, and even if they were closer, they’d look to be trapped underneath the belly if anything else. (Pics 3-4)

And that’s Mammoth Mutt’s debut in the show from start to finish! There’s quite the variety in how her power’s shown off, and we’ll be seeing more of her applications for it as we go along!
