what's your favourite crowley look?
You ask me to choose?? Top five’s the best i can do. And even that hurt…
Let’s count down from five.
5.
Yes yes i know it’s thee basic bitch crowley look the crowley we think of when we think of s1 crowley but. Look at him! Optimal hair length for combing your fingers through. And he’s dressed to… Well to convince an angel to go along with his plan while looking extremely casual but also. Also.
Am i illustrating my point???
4.
Ah yes it’s female presenting crowley looking extremely somber and kind of widow-y mary magdalene channeling at the crucifixion be real with me if even jesus couldn’t resist i mean what am i holier than jesus??
Also…. That subtle show of ankle. I rest my case.
3.
French revolutionary crowley. A blink and you miss it look. Only a few precious minutes of airtime. But the costume department really put their whole costumussy into it. Incredible. If i was aziraphale i’d have kept the cuffs on because i meannnn
At least he tried to match. What a pair. (Also…. Buttons. All the buttons. My weakness…)
2.
Again this look is barely onscreen. It’s crowley reporting to hell about warlock growing up. Just a quick pop-out-of-nanny-ashtoreth casual genderfuck silver chain hair tied back fuckmewitharake look
No but truly. That hair??? They didn’t have to go that hard but they did and i am grateful
1.
Be serious. Was this ever going to end differently?

Dead Boy Detectives: a no-spoiler review
So I have finished DBDs last night, and frankly, I would have probably finished it in one or two days if not for time limitations. So I wanted to write a review without spoilers and in a Q&A format, so here we go.
tldr: I LOVED IT!
Q: Do I need background knowledge to enjoy it?
A: No, just dive in.
So first of all, a disclaimer: I have not read the Sandman comics, I have read one volume of the DBD comic just after the show was announced, but that did jot even cover the complete case, and I have watched the Sandman on Netflix.
If you are worried that you won't get what is happening, I can assure you, you will. You will get sucked into it immediately and will not want to leave.
Characters from Sandman (it is the same universe) that appear there are a bit like easter eggs: you'll get a kick out of it if you saw Sandman first, but otherwise you just watch them in DBDs and then if you decide to watch Sandman you will get a kick out of seeing these familiar faces there.
Q: What is the general vibe of the show? Is it spooky?
A: The show can be described as a heart-felt mystic detective story. It is funny, sweet and a tiny bit spooky (at a guess, PG13). Overall mood is.. joyful and optimistic.
You know how sometimes you want to watch something exciting, but not too scary?
Dramatic, but optimistic?
Light, but also quite profound and philosophical?
Personally, to me, this show ticks all of the above. And as I watched it with interruptions, at times I felt even lucky to have these because there are just so many big topics this show touches. It was often done by one line of the dialogue, but it would stay with you for the next couple of hours, getting you into this delicious state of philosophical exploration. I feel like at a re-watch this will come forward even more.
Q: I am a GO fan, will this tickle me?
A: Oh yes, it will and despite yourself you will be searching for Clues.
Let me just say that the main characters are another throught-the-ages duo, and you will have a lot of fun comparing and contrasting them with Aziraphale and Crowley, as well as Dream and Hob (these are from the Sandman and are also adorable).
One of the two protagonists wears a bow tie.
Another one is... well, Crowley would love him, I have no doubt in that.
Q: Does it deal well with queer representation? Are there neurodivergent characters?
A: Yes and (I would say) yes
Neil Gaiman was involved, what did you expect? Personally, I think this is one of those instances where the world itself basically treats queer as normal. It is just something that exists, and the world as it is now accepts it. The characters may have inner struggles / self-discovery journeys, but the present world at large accepts them fully and without judgement.
Q: Will it pass the Bechdel test?
A: Yes, with flying colours!!
All the characters are absolutely delicious, and I am not gonna give any more details because I don't want to spoil anything, but you do have all flavours of female protagonists, and you will love them all.
Q: What else did you like?
A: The way it was filmed, the title sequence and music, the humour, the costuming, THE CHEMISTRY between the characters!!
Look, I loved this show, please go and watch it, it is amazing and we need another season of this!
Also, there is a CAT KING!!!

Oh me? Just cataloging snakey stuff
I'm currently diving down lots of costume rabbit holes (snake holes? sounds wrong...) in the GO universe. My thoughts for today are about Crowley and how he expresses his snakey-ness through the ages. Might I tempt you down this rabbit hole?
Starting off in Eden. It's a very small detail and barely even visible in this screencap, but you can see deep red embroidery "V" shapes on the shoulder of Crowley's tunic here. They're very scale-like and quite subtle. This "V" scale shape is a patterned motif we'll see throughout the early years (really during the B.C. years) of Crowley clothes. Also, Crowley's hair is almost Gorgon-like, the curls resembling the bodies of serpents.
For the Flood sequence, I had a little trouble finding anything snakey. Crowley's hair is less defined (though glorious! love the plait!) so I'm not as tempted to describe the style as Gorgon-esque. But if you zoom into the robe to get a good view of the texture...
...you can see the herringbone pattern in the weave of the fabric. Herringbone is basically a series of upright and inverted chevrons, that continue the "V" shape motif of snake scales that we first saw on the Eden robe's embroidery. Elusive little reference, but pretty clear once you see it. Also note the unfinished hem at the neckline of Crowley's robe, compared to the smoothly stitched and tied neckline on Aziraphale. Undone versus all bound up.
Bildad is just my favorite and I will gladly ramble indefinitely about everything from the Job minisode. *exhale* Bildad's tone-on-tone black robe has both diamond and stripe-dash designs, which are common patterns for snakes in nature. We've also got the belted sash at the waist, with an unusual use of teal (not a color we associate with Crowley). The unexpected color choice draws attention to the chevron motif, which we've now come to associate with Crowley's snakey-ness in the B.C. flashbacks.
And here's an additional Bildad. I make no apologies.
For the Golgatha sequence, Crowley presents as female, wearing a head covering. The robe looks to be the same as what she wore in the Flood sequence, with the subtle herringbone pattern. It's a heavy scene and the costumes are appropriately subdued.
Sidenote: I want to point out here that through the B.C. flashbacks, Crowley's costumes are consistently very textured compared to Aziraphale's. All the fabrics used are earthy and nubby and just very tactile, even when Crowley is playing the part of a wealthy Shuhite. Aziraphale's fabric choices, in contrast, are polished and almost shining. His accessories are metallic and golden and very much of Heaven. But if we look closer at the texture of his garments, even Aziraphale may be minutely subverting Heaven's uniform. Compare the slub texture (and even the unfinished neck hem in Eden) of Aziraphale's robes in the following images...
...to the perfectly smooth fabrics on the robes of other angels...
Gabriel and Muriel wear Heavenly robes of flawless weave. They're smooth, they're perfect...they're exactly what you'd expect. But not Aziraphale. He is, even back in Eden, drawn to the subtle variances and imperfections of Earth. His garments have texture and substance in a way that we just don't see with the rest of the Heavenly Host.
We now resume your regularly scheduled programming in the years of our lord. We're in the A.D.'s bay-bee!
Crowley's Rome ensemble is so confused and blundered. I read a meta that argued, and I agree, that we're to interpret this as, "This is Crowley's first visit to Rome since the crucifiction and he's just mish-mashed all the styles into one, regardless of gender or whatever." I'm good with the interpretation. In terms of seeking out the snakes, though, we've got a few candidates. First, the dark red linework embroidery at the hem of the toga(?). It's got an undulating pattern that we can read as a literal snake, or simply as a variation on the chevron theme. Either way, it reads as snakey. We've also got the snake brooch--on the nose, but why not? Finally, and this one took me a while, and I'm not certain I'm fully on board, but I'm kind of thinking of Crowley's silver laurels as snake scales. I mean, yes, they're Roman-ish, but very out of place in the context of having a quick drink. You don't wander around the streets of Rome proper wearing silver laurels. Maybe snake scales? This isn't a hill I'm willing to die on.
The big take away from the Rome costume is that this marks a change in Crowley's expression. Prior to this period, he's hidden his snake scales in the weave and texture of his garments. Going forward, we're not going to see any more distinct "V" embroidery or snakey textural patterns. Crowley's style is shifting and becoming more luxurious. But first, Wessex.
GO costume designer Claire Anderson said that for the 537 A.D. Wessex sequence, she was not going all in for historical accuracy. She was compiling armor pieces that looked snake-like. Cheers to her, because poor Crowley just looks like a very uncomfortable and damp serpent. Really like the individual plates on the pauldron and the gauntlet. Very scale-like. The chain mail, itself, can also read snake scales, though I'm hesitant to make that comparison since Aziraphale's armor also includes quite extraordinary amount of chain mail.
A moment of appreciation for Aziraphale's cape, if you will.
Once we reach the Elizabethan era, Crowley really hits his stride in terms of fashion. The lines of his doublet are angular and pointed. The collar is lifted up toward the sky, like a snake periscoping in the grass. But the thing I really see in this costume is the excessive use of velvet. It's the perfect fabric to evoke snake scales. If you've ever been fortunate enough to pet a snake, you'll know that running your hand from the head toward the tail is smooth, but in the opposite direction it's rather rough. (Also, don't, because snakes really don't like it--unless they're shedding...) Similarly, if you run your fingers in one direction of velvet, it causes the fibers to lay flat and smooth, but brushed the other way, the fibers stand up and become rough. Just like the scales. It's also just a very luxurious fabric that begs to be touched. Almost like a temptation, you might say.
In Crowley's Edinburgh costume, the most obvious expression of snake scales can be found on his interior waistcoat. The texture of the fabric, however, does not mimic the "V" pattern we've seen in the B.C. era, instead expressing the scales in the black and red checkered motif. Not super subtle, but nothing about this costume is. I love it so much. Not Bildad-level, but still.
The Holy Water Incident has one glaring snake reference, though not really in the costume itself. Crowley's carrying a walking stick (probably recovering from that post-laudanum punishment) and it's got a little snake head. Not much needs to be said here, as it's pretty obvious. It's a snake. You're welcome.
I'm actually going to end this post here, with our final snake reference being the elongated "S" on Crowley's tie. He's very up to date with the fashions of the era, but still manages to incorporate a clear symbol of his serpenty-ness.
So, yah. Snakey scales though the millennia. I want to do an in-depth look at both Crowley and Aziraphale's costumes in the modern era and really pull them apart piece by piece (not like that...) to find all the angelic and serpentine easter eggs Anderson included. Until then.

Good Omens Crowley Cosplay
Update
The past couple of weeks, I've been brave enough to show the progress of my Crowley Cosplay on this platform. Which was a big step for me because I like my small anonymous bubble. But never before have I put this much work into a costume.
It started with sewing the clothes because they didn't fit, hand-painting the wig layer by layer and ended up with 3 months of work on the wings and almost 400 single feathers put together.
If you want to take a look at the progress, here's the link
Anyway. It's time I share the final result with you all. And on top, there's a video of the first contest I took part in with the costume as well.
1) The Final Look
Photo 1 by KyuriShots on Instagram
Photo 2 by a friend of mine
2) Aziracrow
Photo once again by KyuriShots on Instagram. A friend of mine did a female version of Aziraphale. It's the first time I did a partner-cosplay with someone else than my best friend.
3) The Costume Content
Oh dear gawd. The costume contest. This one sent me over the edge.
Yes, it was a costume contest only, not a real cosplay contest. Which meant that any kind of costume was welcome. And a lot of things went wrong that day and I was devastated afterwards. Not going to write down what led to this but let me tell you, things that went wrong that could've been avoided were:
- I forgot to pack the right pair of pants and had to wear another pair that was a bit too loose
- I usually pack two wigs, just in case. I forgot to pack the short wig and had to do the man-bun version
- I forgot to pack the sponge with which I do the beard stubbles, so I had to get really creative
I was also really nervous to go on stage and thought about downing that bottle of wine more than once and if I wouldn't have had to drive that evening, I definitely would have.
Anyway, almost two weeks later I feel ready to share the result with you.
What I really am proud of is that many people told me they couldn't tell that I was nervous at all and that I did "such a good Crowley performance".
After all, this contest was a lesson and I definitely will attend more.

Small idea for Crowley and Aziraphale. Crowley is helping in the bookshop and either drops or knocks down a box and pictures scatter. When he goes to pick them up they are pics of female Aziraphale in burlesque, plaid pastys and whatever the costume is. Crowley basically shuts down just staring at the photos. Aziraphale wanders by and exclaims "oh I haven't seen those pictures in years. There was about 5 years that I turned the bookshop into Books and Burlesque, it was quite good for not selling books but I really needed more space for storing books so I had to shut it down. Hmm I bet those costumes are still around somewhere, not sure I'd remember the routines though. Maybe we should both change to female and try it again."
Crowley short circuits even more.

I binged the entire Good Omens season 2 today, and, well. I certainly don’t have anyone in the Real World to talk to about it, so here is my review. Under the cut, because spoilers.
Good Omens 2 was ALWAYS going to be a hard sell, because season 1 was so damn perfect. It was a closed story, based on a book, very faithful to that book, yet still added enough to keep things interesting. Amazing actors, great costumes and set design, it was funny, it had a great theme, and was very layered.
It is also literally the only time that I saw the kind of relationship I feel like I’d want for my self. Ever. Anywhere.
So yeah. I very much would have loved if the show had just left things there. What I was telling myself is that I trust Neil Gaiman, and that whatever happens, he knows what he is doing and why. I’ll get back to this.
The majority of the season was fun, but significantly less good than the first one. As I said, the standard was very high, so no surprise there. What I was surprised by, however, was just how much the characters who are not Crowley or Aziraphale (I wouldn’t even call them side characters, they are just as if not more vital to the plot) added to the whole. They were not in this season, and the show is definitely poorer without them. Gone with them are the fun and whimsical worldbuilding things that made this story so good, like the witches and the prophecies and the children and their way of making sense of the world. It is also a loss not to have any of those very colourful people mentioned again.
The side characters that this season does have are a lot less interesting than the ones in the previous season. They also don’t seem to add as much to the theme as the old ones did. Every character in season 1 revolved around love, love for humanity and love for someone they were supposed to be adversaries with (looking at you Anathema and Newt). Meanwhile in season 2 we get two shopkeepers on the same street who kind of have a crush on each other. It is much lower conflict, and much less relevant to the theme of the story. Ass far as strength of character goes, I feel like none of them live up to, for example, Mme Tracey.
The scope of the story feels smaller, too, possibly because the action is almost all happening on Aziraphale’s street, while season 1 had a significant part be in Tadfield, and Aziraphale and Crowley were moving around much more. We also get fewer, but longer, history flashbacks, and no voiceover narration or animated sequences to illustrate said narration.
A lot of the plot is ideas that I’ve seen online in the fandom. I’m not sure whether it is because we were particularly good in guessing stuff, if said tropes were already known from previous things said by Gaiman and Pratchett, or if Gaiman got inspired by popular headcanons and used them in his work. I also don’t care where the ideas came from. I definitely enjoyed seeing things on screen that I knew from up here, including but not limited to that one crack ship I used to read some fics about back in 2019 because one of the two partners uses genderneutral pronouns.
Ah, talking about. Gender. And general queerness. It’s there, but feels less overwhelming than it did four years ago. Maybe that’s me, but I definitely did miss the parts where Crowley was presenting as female. Most shopkeepers on that street seem queer in some way, and one of them has a visibly nonbinary partner, but it was all very much in the background. I would have liked these things to be a little more prominent. Season 1, I still go back sometimes and rewatch Pollution’s introduction, just to hear God use they/them pronouns. Season 2 didn’t have any moments like this.
Crowley and Aziraphale. Crowley and Aziraphale... Oh dear. Please let me repeat again that I am not going to be able to be completely objective about them. (Neither is anyone else in this fandom. At least I’m honest about it.)
So I was very happy with most of the season. Not great, but it was nice and fun. And then the ending hit.
As I said, Neil Gaiman clearly knows what he’s doing. What he is doing, is setting things up for a third season. As far as cliffhangers go, this one was very elaborate, instead of just throwing in a scene at the end, but also, I really, really wish that he hadn’t.
I’m not sure that Neil Gaiman understands just how important Good Omens was to many of us BECAUSE of the happy ending. And obviously he doesn’t owe us anything and is not responsible for my emotional reaction, but this doesn’t change the fact that I am very, very deeply hurt, because it feels like we’d been given the perfect fairy tale, back in 2019, and now it all got ripped away. And for what. Also, I do trust Gaiman, but I do very, very much NOT trust Amazon. If he doesn’t get a third season, then I don’t want the story to be left like this.
There are a lot of deep conversations that we could, and should, have here. About streaming shows and their obsession with cliffhangers, about our cultural inability to conceive of two characters who are just together, without any drama, and also love stories that are not about getting together. We could talk about abusive situations and how difficult is to get away and not be dragged in, and how maybe the show will explore that. About queer representation in particular and how tired many of us are to see our few couples being kept apart again and again, with no promise of a further season to fix things (remember First Kill).
I am not going to have any of these here. Obviously.
What I AM, however, bothered by, is just how out of nowhere it seems to have come? I honestly feel like Aziraphale’s character development had been set back to episode 3 of the first season, where he still believed that Heaven was good and worth trying to work with. After that, he realized that it is very much not the case, openly defied Heaven, was almost killed for it, and then got a happy ending by getting rid of them all and being allowed to stay on Earth. WHY IS AZIRAPHALE EVEN SLIGHTLY INTERESTED IN THE IDEA OF GOING BACK TO HEAVEN AND RUNNING THE PLACE?! I mean, that was the whole point of his character, wasn’t it?? An angel who loves Earth and humanity enough to defy the will of God, just so he can stay and spend more time here. WHY WOULD HE WANT TO DO SOMETHING ELSE NOW??!
So the thing is, I understand why he would want to go back to an abusive institution. I wanted to go back to school, too, after the first attempt almost killed me. The problem is that I did not see this coming. If you want to change a character’s motivation this much, then you need to set it up very carefully. Throughout the season, we’ve seen Heaven be generally kind of awful, and Aziraphale didn’t show any signs of missing being part of it. There also isn’t anything they can really offer him, because he was already together with Crowley. It’s very weird. Gaiman seems to be setting up a getting-together story, but like, we’ve been through that already in season 1? He actually talked about it multiple times himself how he purposefully structured it as a love story? And like, he IS a very talented and experienced writer. He would be absolutely able to set up some interesting conflict for an already-together Azirapahle and Crowley, that doesn’t feel like setting their arc back half the story??
I don’t understand why he chose to do this. I am always very annoyed if I don’t understand where storytelling choices are coming from. It’s why the Supernatural finale pulled me back in so strongly.
I am also very hurt, but mostly angry. I don’t feel like I really have the right to be, but I am.

Female Aziraphale costume building stage: bowtie
I'm not sure if the classic bowtie A is large enough, so I made a second one B out of two rectangular pieces of fabric.
Not completely satisfied with either....
Which one to go with female Aziraphale? A or B? 🤔
...or sew a third one?
EDIT: just realized I had sewn bowtie B with the backside frontwards 😅 ...fixed it, now it looks more like a classically wrapped bowtie and less stiff and sharp edged (and round shapes are definitely more Aziraphale's thing 😁)

I'm perfectly aware that I'm talking about a community theater play & I'm a dork, but can I just say that if it weren't for Aziraphale I would never have been cast as my literal dream role?
First, I feel like I should say that in the DMV, community theater seems weirdly professional and competitive. We have a really strong pool of companies that put on such good shows. So being a fat AFAB person, who is too poor to afford actual tap dance lessons and voice coaches, I assumed that I would never fit in here.
But I did! And I did some theater but I was finding it hard to... fit into any of the female roles available to me. And I figured they'd never cast me as a guy because why put a 5'3 person with a giant rack in a role when you have a traditionally attractive man? Who is probably tall?
And when I came out as nonbinary, they were all really supportive of me and I began to be asked to be a guy in like, pub scenes and servant scenes. Little guy moments. Then, one of my friends was like, do you want to cosplay as Aziraphale to my Crowley? And I was so nervous that first time, so uncomfortable, until about halfway through the photo shoot I realized- In the books Aziraphale is fat. It's okay if I have a double chin, or a belly, because I'm Aziraphale right now. This weird moment of 'It's okay to be ugly if you're doing something else well- like being funny or being passionate or being in character' kind of washed over me. It changed the way I audition for things. The pressure to be 'pretty' just went away.
Kind of.
I wasn't going to audition for Watson because I truly didn't think I'd get it. And then, in that room of cis male actors who were heckling me for my knowledge of fandom, I was scared. But I went in knowing John Watson in and out, knowing how to be a guy, and there was a moment that I was like, "I'm fat. I have tits. I'm short." But I remembered it didn't matter. Because I'd been a believable Aziraphale, and six dozen believable servant roles, and I was a believable Watson. No one knew Watson like I did.
And the director noticed. I didn't believe her when I got the email that I'd been cast. I thought it couldn't possibly be true. But it was, and I'm having the best time, and I'm in the most gender affirming costume I've ever been in and I'm playing on my favorite stage.
I used to be an acting major in college but I dropped out because... well, a lot of people told me I'd never go anywhere with it and never make any money. But back then, in the early 00's, I told my now-Ex that my dream role was to play John Watson. And he laughed.
And now I'm playing John Watson.

trans crowley manifesto
so re: transness in good omens. if we’re talking about explicit canon either all or none of the angels/demons are trans depending on how you’re defining it
they are all sexless and seem to choose their own gender presentation. probably you could categorize them all as agender
but I would argue that thematically Crowley is the most trans.
evidence:
1. presents as, at different times, both a man and a woman, explicitly in the show.
male: Mr. Anthony J Crowley.
female: Nanny.
2. tends to dress more androgynously than most other angel/demon characters.
I’m not going to provide evidence for this; other people have done much more/better analysis of Crowley’s costuming than I am capable of.
3. Explicitly denies being a man to a human character. (!!)
“you’re a good lad.” / “I’m not actually. Either.”
That quote is pretty important and I don’t think it’s unintentional that it was Crowley and not Aziraphale that got this line. Though we understand that angels do not have gender, we do see them performing what looks like gender. Crowley and Aziraphale both create human male personas to blend in with the humans. I suspect default demon/angel attitude to gender identity would be to not care how they are viewed by others. This moment shows that Crowley cares enough about his gender to bother telling an acquaintance (someone he seems to like) that his gender identity is not male.
It is also the writers reinforcing the coding of Crowley as trans, which comes with his androgynous gender presentation.
4. is the only character in the show to have explicitly chosen his own name (!!).
we never learn his deadname angel name
we don’t know how he came by the name Crawley, but we do know that he chose Crowley (and Anthony J.!!) himself.
5. i think there’s some interesting parallels between falling from grace and transition.
When they fall, demons seem to change name, physical form (Crowley got his snake eyes), and social role.
it doesn’t work as an analogy, but it isn’t meant to (it would not be good if the angels were cis and the demons were trans lol - but that’s not what I’m saying).
5.5. when viewed as a type of transition I think there’s some really interesting stuff going on with the way Crowley and Aziraphale view his demon-ness differently. Analysing all their interactions through this lens needs it’s own post but in general:
i wouldn’t say Crowley thinks of his fall as a good thing (he says “I didn’t mean to fall” and seems a little bitter that he was cast out just for asking questions) but he also doesn’t seem to regret it. he doesn’t think there is anything wrong with being a demon. we know that he’s not an evil person, but he doesn’t seem conflicted about working for the “bad guys” the way Aziraphale is conflicted about being friends with someone on the other side. (He hates the demons, of course, but he also hates the angels.)
Aziraphale thinks all their problems would be solved if they were both angels. Crowley seems offended by the suggestion. There isn’t anything wrong with who he is.
#go2#good omens season 2#good omens 2#crowley#crowley good omens#good omens 2 spoilers#go2 spoilers#good omens spoilers#go#when i say ''most trans'' im discounting trans human characters and characters who use they/them pronouns as options#this is just bc they are minor characters or their gender identity isn't important in the show#if you think that's an unfair way of categorising it thats fine i dont really care about the superlative i was just going for persuasive

I'm still rushing to finish my Nadja costume for tomorrow but I'm like... after all the money (...a lot of money) and time I've put into this thing, and I'd still rather just wear my Aziraphale costume again.
Because 1. Nobody's going to recognize the outfit I bet, and 2. As a chunky female-shaped agender person I don't get a lot of opportunities to dress as a chunky male-shaped agender person. So I'm missing out there, and wearing such a feminine costume is ok sure but also dressing up as a woman but not being *pretty* makes me feel like I'm being judged. Like all I see is a awkward frumpy person in a sloppy costume. But Aziraphale is awkward and frumpy so it feels fine. You know?
Also I'm not shaving my legs so Nadja's just gonna have a forest of leg hair under her skirt, ok.
