welcome to emo moss’s menagerie of animal facts !

commencing today because i’ve finally stopped putting this shit off

today’s animal is the FLAT HEADED CAT (Prionailurus planiceps)

the flat headed cat is a small wild cat with reddish-brown fur. they prey mostly on aquatic animals and are extremely elusive, sometimes dubbed “the most unknown cat in the world.” these guys were first recorded in 1827 and despite efforts since then, they are remarkably elusive and hard to find. they are critically endangered, with <2,500 estimated to be left in the wild. they are normally nocturnal, but captive specimens have been known to be crepuscular. they are known for their wide, close-set eyes, small ears, short legs, and (obviously) flat head.

flat headed cats are very unique because of the nominal flattened shape of their heads. it’s unclear why their heads are shaped that way!

their eyes are very large and set very very close together, giving them the appearance of some sort of extraterrestrial cat thingy. it’s likely because they are nocturnal. these things can look you straight in the eyes if they wish (but they probably won’t, because they’re very shy)

they share a characteristic with cheetahs and fishing cats ! their claws are not fully retractable and they have about 2/3rds of their claws protruding at all times.

these guys are ITTY BITTY TINY. they have a head and body length of about 13-20 inches (41-50 cm) and a very short tail of 5-6 inches (13 to 15 cm)!

their diets are mostly aquatic and they have been known to wash their food in water like raccoons!

both males and females scent mark by raising their leg and spraying urine in their territories.

captive adults were observed groping and pawing along the bottom of a pool with their front paws spread, again very similar to raccoons !

their vocalizations, although we do not know much about them, have been reported to be similar to that of a domestic cat’s. kittens meow similarly and adults have been recorded exhibited purring noises that sound remarkably similar to a domestic cat’s!

after they catch their prey, which is aquatic, they usually take them at least 2 meters away from the body of water so that the prey cannot escape again.

another consistent weird body feature: from what has been recorded, their teeth are unusually long for a feline!

Meet the sand cat (Felis margarita). This small, solitary feline inhabits arid regions—including Africa’s Sahara Desert and parts of Asia. Built for desert life, the thick soles of this cat’s paws allow it to walk on scorching sand during the day and cold sand at night. In parts of its range, daytime temperatures can soar up to 124° Fahrenheit (51° C) and then plummet to 31° Fahrenheit (-0.5° C) by night. The sand cat is also a “fearless snake hunter” known to pursue snakes (even venomous vipers) for a meal.

Dan absolutely despised his parole at first, but honestly this is a blast. Sure, he’s stuck in the form of a cat, a kitten even, but he’d found an absolutely wonderful companion. Partner. Ally? Baby Chaos Lord? He’d work on it. 

Klarion is just happy to have found such a great familiar, he even named them Teekl II, which is a great name thank you very much hero-babies! So now he has two Teekl familiars, and Teekl II always gets so gleeful whenever they successfully pull a prank! He even has his own fire magic which is so fun! 

Danny is not happy to get thrown into another world, stuck as a kitten. He’s also not pleased to have found a sick baby liminal, but fine. If this is what he’s supposed to deal with then he’ll deal with it! Even if he has to be a familiar for a teeny tiny bit of time. It’s fine, and the dude has a pocket he can peek out of on his coat. 

Jason has no idea where this kitten came from but the Pit is being surprisingly chill about it. Something about a baby? Whatever, he’s made the furball a little matching outfit and they like to sit in his pockets and peer out. No idea how Cat Hood is making the shadows all spooky now or why the eyes went from blue to green, but whatever. 

Ellie is utterly delighted in this situation. She was just wandering, but now she’s a lil fluffy kitten, and ended up landing on this kid’s head. This magic kid’s head! He even has a talking tiger friend too! So cool! She’s definitely sticking with him! This will be so fun!

Billy was worried about making sure the kitten got food, she’s so tiny! Mr Tawny is a big help though, and apparently she’s his familiar now that he’s given her a mortal name? He doesn’t fully understand but apparently she’s connected to his magic now, if the shouts from the gods are anything to go by. Look, an electric cat is cool. Pakhet is amazing, and Fawcet thinks it’s adorable that Marvel has a kitten clinging to his shoulder

Ragdolls and Ragamuffins

A Ragdoll cat is a pointed breed with blue eyes. Most variations from that are not considered Ragdolls.

These points will be significantly darker than the base of their bodies. ↓↓↓

A Ragamuffin can be any color or coat pattern except pointed. They can have any eye color.

This breed was created by crossing Ragdolls with other longhaired cats, including Turkish Angoras, Himalayans, Persians and longhaired domestic cats. ↓↓↓

CONTROVERSY

The founder of Ragdoll cats and owner of Josephine (founder mother cat of the Ragdolls), Ann Baker, held stringent control over the breed and its classifications. This didn’t sit well with some admirers and caused a group of Ragdoll breeders to depart from Baker and her strict rules. After some hostile years, the group ended up with the Ragamuffin breed.

Asian palm civets are most widely known for their production of coffee beans for Kopi Luwak coffee, but they're also associated with another, equally popular drink: the toddy! The toddy cat also feeds on palm flower sap, which when fermented becomes a sweet liquor known as toddy which gives this cat its name.

So I’m a huge Dungeon Meshi fan, and when my boyfriend and I went to Kinokuniya bookstore, I decided to get a volume of the manga with the winged lion on it! Anywho, my boyfriend points to the winged lion and goes “Kind of looks like you!” and the amount of sheer EUPHORIA that rushes through me in this bookstore… unreal.

My hair actually does look similar to the winged lion’s! It’s longer and blonde and wavy. But I like to think the resemblance it’s because of more than just hair. Keep in mind that my boyfriend doesn’t know I’m a therian, let alone a big cat!

Did you know that you Momo performed this as a cover version while it was originally "Nyanyanyanya" featuring Hatsune Miku prior to Nyan Cat's origin? So many questions why Momo was performed prior to Nyan Cat's early-2010s viral algorithm! It's so sad for Momo that she wasn't even credited while that song was originally belongs to daniwellP where Miku performs "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!". But she might be notice soon later for a forseeable future. Justice for Momo.

Smile like Smilodon, because it’s Fossil Friday! This saber-tooth cat roamed the Americas during the Pleistocene, and went extinct some 10,000 years ago. Scientists estimate that its signature teeth, which could reach lengths of 7 in (18 cm), grew at the rapid speed of .24 in (6 mm) per month—double the growth rate of an African lion’s teeth. To unsheathe these knife-like canines, Smilodon could open its jaws twice as wide as today’s big cats.
