Double Trouble (Floyd x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: A certain pair of twins are found roaming around NRC campus. No, not those ones. (AKA, Floyd and your kids come visit from the future.)
AN: This was supposed to be a cute short fic. Now it's 20 pages and three weeks later.
Warnings: Maybe a little ooc near the end. Kids and mentions of how they're made. AFAB Reader with she/her pronouns.
It was a pretty quiet day at NRC, which meant (Y/N) was waiting with bated breath for something to go terribly wrong.
“You worry too much!” Grim complained, hanging off her shoulder as they walked along the main thoroughfare past the Great Seven statues. “We finally have a day off! No work from Crowley, no problems with the dorms, no weird stuff popping out. And! Sam had that sale on canned tuna!” Grim pawed at the can he was holding, trying to rip open the pull tab on top. With a frustrated huff, he reluctantly handed it over.
(Y/N) quickly popped open the can and handed it back to him. Grim gave a small cry of delight as he buried his face in the shredded tuna. “I know, I know,” She said, absentmindedly scratching him behind the ears. “I think I’m just not used to it anymore. It feels like something should happen, you know? Like, they say right before lightning strikes you can feel the static in the air. And be honest, when was the last time we had a real day off?”
Grim looked up, licking his lips. “Well, last month we - no, wait, that’s when the fairies stole that magestone and had that fashion show. Oh, what about the weekend when we - no, that was Camp Vargas, huh? Uhh, Port Fest was really fun!”
“We were working at the food stalls the whole time.” (Y/N) grinned at her feline-type companion. “Or at least I was.”
Grim frowned. “Hey! Taste testing is an important part of selling food! You have to make sure your product is up to snuff!”
(Y/N) giggled and took the empty can from Grim, putting it in the plastic bag that held the other odds and ends they had picked up from the Mystery Shop. “Of course, we couldn't have done it without you.” She shielded her eyes from the sun, squinting to look up at the sky as if to double check it wasn’t about to start falling. “I just think that-”
“Mama!”
Both (Y/N) and Grim jumped, the latter falling off the former’s shoulder with a yelp to float in the air. (Y/N) blinked the white sunspots out of her vision looking around for where the exclamation had come from. No sooner had she started her search than a tiny force threw itself against her legs nearly knocking her over. (Y/N) looked down, seeing a wailing child bury his head into her hip, arms clasped around her in an iron-clad grip.
“Whoa, hey, hey!” (Y/N) said, trying to get her bearings. She pried the child’s grip away just enough for her to kneel down so they could be closer to eye level. The boy had a cherubic face, big eyes and big cheeks, with big tears rolling down them. He had teal-colored (your hair texture) hair. One of his teary eyes was a stormy gray while the other was (your eye color). A set of sharp almost shark-like teeth bit at his quivering bottom lip.
‘Do Jade and Floyd have a younger brother or something?’ (Y/N) thought.
She patted the boy's hair down and whipped the tears off his cheeks. He was taking big gulping breaths, trying to calm himself down. “Hey, it’s okay,” She said in what she hoped was a calming voice. “You’re okay. Did you get lost? This can be a big scary place, huh?”
The boy took another shuddering breath and flung himself in (Y/N)’s arms. She fell back, sitting roughly, as the boy buried his face in her shoulder.
“Geez, who the heck is this crybaby?” Grim muttered, floating nearby with his paws on his hips.
“Grim, don’t be rude!”
“He’s the one who ran into you! That’s rude!” Grim floated a little closer, cocking his head to look at the boy. “You know, he kinda looks like-”
“Ah!” (Y/N) yelped, pain suddenly rushing through her hand. She had been patting the boy’s hair, trying to help him calm down, when he suddenly turned his head and bit down hard. Jerking her hand back, (Y/N) could see a fresh set of indents forming a perfect semi-circle around the joint of her thumb, two of the points already beading with blood.
Grim immediately jumped to the defense. “Hey! What’s the big idea?”
The boy let out another wail, picking himself up and dashing away before (Y/N) could take another breath. “Hey, wait!” She called after him. “It’s okay! Come back!”
“Okay?!” Grim said as incredulously as he could manage. “He bit you! Look, you’re bleeding!”
(Y/N) whipped away the blood from her hand on her skirt. “He’s clearly just scared, Grim. It was probably just an instinct. Come on, we better find him before he gets into any trouble.”
Ignoring Grim’s grumblings, (Y/N) jogged off in the direction the boy had gone. She wondered why a kid so young would be alone in a place like this. He was, what, maybe seven or eight? Not to mention obviously terrified. And… Wait, had he called her mama? (Y/N) faltered a little when she remembered that. Maybe it was like when a kid called someone they were close to auntie or big sister? But why mama?
“Say that again and I’ll bite your fingers off!”
(Y/N) was pulled out of her thoughts by the sound of a child’s voice yelling some… pretty violent threats. She couldn’t imagine the small crying boy from before saying something like that. Was there another kid wandering campus? Was it a family visit day or something?
(Y/N) turned the corner to see the boy facing off against a group of students. Or, no, it wasn’t the same boy. Sure, he had the same round face, teal hair, and mismatched eyes, but he held himself in a completely different way. Instead of curling in on himself with fear, his shoulders were back, chin up in defiance, his sharp teeth pulled into a scowl, tiny fists balled with rage instead of anxiety.
(Y/N)  didn’t want to believe it, but the students looked like they were getting ready to square up with a kid. Channeling into her de facto role of campus peacekeeper, she put herself between the kid and the students, saying, “Hey! What’s going on here?”
One of them jabbed his finger at the boy. “This kid came out of nowhere and started insulting us! Saying our magic was weak!”
“It is!” The boy said, peering around (Y/N)’s legs. “My papa’s the strongest guy at Night Raven College ever! He could take you all on at once! Tell ‘em, Mama!”
“Mama?” Another one of the students said. “Prefect, you know this kid?”
“Uh, not exactly, it’s kind of complicated. Look, he’s just a kid, he didn’t mean any harm. Let’s just all cool down for a second okay?”
Another student stepped forward, punching his fist into his open hand. “I think he needs to learn some manners. And if his ‘mama’ isn’t going to teach them to him, we will.”
Instinct kicked in and (Y/N) scooped the boy up in her arms. “Now, just hang on a second, you’re not really going to fight a kid, are you?”
“Yeah, I can take all you sea cucumbers on!” The boy shouted from her arms. “You look like a sea cucumber too, and their face is their butt!”
“That’s it!”
As the student advanced (Y/N) took a step back. Her arms full, her body reacted without thinking about it. Her leg flew up in a high kick, landing squarely in the approaching student’s face. His face bore a perfect shoe print as the young boy in her arms started cackling. (Y/N) took advantage of the momentary stunning and booked it out of there.
“Grim! Cover!” She yelled. Grim blew a spray of blue flames at the pursuing students, giving the new trio an opportunity to escape relatively unscathed.
(Y/N) sprinted through the halls, the boy clutched in her arms, Grim flying close behind them. Dodging into an empty classroom, (Y/N) took deep breaths as she tried to calm her rapidly beating heart. The boy leapt out of her arms, clapping his hands.
“That was so cool!” He exclaimed. “Uncle Grim was all like ‘Foosh!’ And Mama kicked like ‘bam!’ He had a footprint on his face! Did you see that, Mama? Did you see?”
(Y/N) held her hand up, trying to order her thoughts for a second before speaking to the overly excited boy. “I saw, I saw. Did you really just go up and start insulting those guys? They have to be twice your age, you could have gotten hurt!”
The boy pouted, shoving his hands in his pockets and looking away. “I know. I’m not supposed to start arguing with people. I’m sorry.” He recited the apology as if he had done it plenty of times before.
(Y/N) knelt down in front of him, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Look, I just don’t want you getting hurt, okay? I know you’re probably really tough but you can’t blame me for worrying, you know?”
The boy grinned, showing off his sharp teeth. He threw himself into (Y/N)’s arms in a big hug. “I know. That’s why I have Papa and Mama! Nothing bad happens when you’re around! Oh!” He gasped as if suddenly remembering something. “Mama, have you seen Cas anywhere? We got split up! I need to be there to fight anyone who tries to mess with him!”
(Y/N) rubbed his hair. “What did we just say about fighting?”
Meanwhile, at the Monstro Lounge, Floyd was having one of his rough days. First, he had to break up a fight between a bunch of customers in the Lounge, which might have been fine normally, except they all cowered and begged forgiveness as soon as he got there, so we didn’t even get a chance to squeeze anyone. Then, Azul had started bothering him for his grades in his history of magic class. Like, yeah, it was easy and he could finish the homework no problem, but it was so boring! Why should he have to put effort into something like that, anyway? He was a great mage. Practical exams were a breeze. Why did the paper assignments even matter? Third, Jade kept talking his ear off about some rare new mushroom someone had sent him. Something about how it could let you see into the future, or bring stuff back from the past, or something. Floyd sort of zoned out in the middle of his brother’s explanation.
And, worst of all, he hadn’t seen his dear Shrimpy all day! Usually, on days off, he’d go track her down, making himself home at Ramshackle dorm, looming over her while she tried to study in the library until she finally paid attention to him and they could go do something fun, or dragging her to his basketball practice so he could show off. But he’d been stuck inside all day. He was starting to get stir crazy.
All he could think about was wrapping his arms around her soft, plush form and squeezing as hard as he could, until she gasped and made those cute sounds he liked.
Floyd giggled, kicking his feet. Maybe he could sneak out? Yeah, he could be sneaky when he wanted to! It couldn’t be that hard, right? He was already out of the Monstro Lounge, past the main entrance of the dorm. All he needed to do was go down the tunnel to the mirror chamber and-
“Well, hello there, Floyd.” Busted. Floyd grimaced, turning around to see Jade smiling at him, holding a huge stack of paperwork. “I was looking for you. Professor Trien gave me the assignments you’ve missed. He asked me to make sure you got these done before your next class. You don’t have anything else to do today, right?”
Floyd groaned, rolling his eyes. “Come on, Jade, I don’t want to do that! What’s even the point, huh? What’s some paper going to prove about casting spells?”
Jade gave a faux sympathetic look that Floyd could spot from 10 miles away. “Oh? So you did have plans today? Such a shame that you’ll have to cancel them, then.”
Floyd grit his teeth as Jade shoved the stack of papers into his arms. He briefly considered dropping them all and throwing a punch, if he didn’t know for a fact that Jade was one of the only people who could actually match him blow for blow. Floyd could count on one hand the amount of times they had physically fought with each other, but man, did no one ever suspect that the more calm and collected twin could be just as brutal.
Jade took Floyd by the elbow, not so gently leading him back into the main dorm, when Floyd froze, ears perking up at a sound.
Jade frowned. “Floyd, I said-”
“Shh!” He interrupted, putting a finger to his lips. Floyd cocked his head to the side, trying to hear that sound again. Suddenly, he shoved the papers back at Jade, bounding down the hall and taking the stairs two at a time down to the lobby.
The main lobby of the Octavinelle dorm took the same decor ques as the Monstro Lounge, or maybe it was the other way around. The lobby was seemingly empty, but Floyd was able to narrow in to the sound he had made out earlier, the hiccuping sound of a kid trying very hard not to cry.
Floyd stalked over to one of the couches, peering over. A small boy was huddled against the back of the couch, trying his hardest to make himself disappear.
“Hey, there, Guppy,” Floyd said, leaning over the back of the couch. “What’s with the sad eyes?”
Most children might have been frightened by the sight of a shark-toothed, manic eyed mer looming over them, the moody lighting on the lobby casting haunting shadows over his face. But the boy looked relieved, jumping on and over the couch to latch himself onto Floyd.
“Papa!” He wailed. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I got lost and I couldn’t find Argo, and then I found Mama, but I had big feelings and I bit her! I know I’m not supposed to bite when I have big feelings, but I forgot and it was an accident! And then I ran away from Mama, and I know I shouldn’t have, and I still can’t find Argo, and-and-and-!”
Before he could say anything else, and before he had the chance to start crying again, Floyd scooped him up under the arms and brought him high in the air. “Wow, you have strong looking teeth!” He praised. “I bet you  can bite real hard! Show me, show me!” Floyd flashed his own sharp-toothed grin, exaggerating gnashing down. The boy sniffled weekly before giving a half-smile. “Hey, come on, you know what I mean. We want a full smile, right, Guppy?” Floyd tossed the boy into the air, catching him and swinging him around so his legs flew out behind him. Despite himself, the boy started giggling. Floyd smiled, booping him on the nose. “There’s those teeth. Look how strong you are!”
The boy covered his mouth with his hands, trying to stifle his giggling. He made claws with his hands, baring his teeth. “Grr!”
Floyd gasped dramatically. “Oh no! This isn’t a guppy at all! It’s a shark! Jade, help me!” Floyd theatrically collapsed to the floor, making sure to keep the boy at arms length above him so he didn’t get hurt. The boy’s mood had fully switched now, laughing and holding his arms out so he could pretend to fly.
Jade stood in the doorway, smiling softly at his brother’s antics. But, more pressingly, wondering how a small child had found his way into Octavinelle in the first place. And, possibly, why he happened to have a certain family resemblance?
“Pardon me,” Jade said, stepping forward. “I couldn’t help hear you say ‘Papa?’”
“And then, I swung on this rope over the river, and it was probably, like a hundred feet high! And I let go and did a huge cannonball and it made the biggest splash ever!” The boy, (Y/N) had found out was named Argonaut, was regaling her and Grim with some pretty fantastical exploits from the last camping  trip he and his brother Caspian had taken with their Uncle Jade. The name drops were getting much too specific, and (Y/N) still needed to find out what happened to Argo’s twin, so she decided a visit to Octavinelle was the best next thing to do.
“Wow, you did all that?” She asked. Argo walked beside her, holding her hand and swinging it back and forth in a large arc. “A hundred feet is pretty high. You must be brave.”
“The bravest!” He said with a big sharp-toothed smile. “Papa said I have to look out for Cas because he gets scared real easy. But he knows tons of stuff and he’s really smart, so that’s okay.” He frowned a little. “I can’t read really good, so Cas helps me out. That’s why we’re a team!”
“You sound like a very good team. We’ll find him soon, okay?” (Y/N) could tell Argo was worried about his brother. Even if he kept putting on a brave face, being lost in a big, strange place like NRC would put any kid on edge, not to mention that Argo had no idea how he or Cas got there in the first place.
“My tummy felt bubbly like when I had too much soda that one time and there was a big light and then I was here,” He had said when she asked.
‘More magic nonsense,’ (Y/N) thought to herself. She decided she was never getting used to it.
Stepping through the mirror to Octavinelle, the air temperature noticeably dropped at least ten degrees. The light took on the cool blue hue of the water surrounding the glass tunnels around the dorm. Its own little pocket dimension, or however the dorms actually worked, was like living inside an intricate aquarium full of coral reefs, darting fish, and cool temperatures to remind the largely mer-based population of home.
Stepping into the Mostro Lounge’s lobby, (Y/N) turned to Grim and said, “Okay, you stay here with him. I’m going to try and find-”
“Argo!”
“Cas!”
Argo sprinted away, colliding with his double in the middle of the Lounge floor, almost knocking a poor waiter off his feet. The two boys hugged as if they hadn’t seen each other for years instead of the better part of an hour. (Y/N) felt a pull on her heartstrings at their reunion.
“Cute,” She muttered. She took a step forward. “I-”
“Shrimpy!”
Before she could get another word out, (Y/N) was tackled in a bear hug. Floyd pinned her arms to her sides, picking her up and swinging her around. Behind the daze of dizziness and the feeling of her ribs creaking under pressure, she couldn’t help but compare her normal greeting from Floyd to the smaller twin’s reuniting.
“Urk, hello, Floyd. Good to see you too.”
“Aww, that’s all you got to say? With our kids here and everything?”
“With our- what?!” (Y/N) squirmed out of Floyd’s hold and stumbled back.
Floyd pulled the two careening boys close, beaming like a proud father. “Come on, Shrimpy, you met our little leptocephalus, right? I’m Papa and you’re Mama, right, boys?”
“Yeah, Mama,” Argo said, “Don’t be silly!”
“Argo,” Cas muttered, tugging his brother’s sleeve. “Something kinda weird happened, you know? Mama and Papa look different. I think this is where they met.”
“Yeah, Night Raven College, the best school in the world!” Argo threw his arms up in celebration. He turned back to Floyd and (Y/N). “Cas and I are gonna come here too when we get big. We’re going to be great mages just like Papa and Uncle Jade and Uncle Azul and Uncle Ace and Uncle Deuce and Uncle Grim and everyone!”
“Everyone, huh?” (Y/N) said, starting to feel dizzy.
Cas pouted at his brother. “That’s not what I mean, Argo.”
“He’s right!” Grim cut in, paws on his hips with a smug look on his face. “Since I am going to be the world’s greatest mage!”
Floyd poked Grim’s exposed tummy. “You were last on that list, seal.”
“Mrow!” Grim started flailing his paws at Floyd, who easily kept him at bay with one long arm pushing his head back.
“Ah, here’s where you all went.” Jade came up to the group. He was gently cradling one of his terrariums that had a strange-looking purple and silver mushroom with a dripping cap nestled inside.
“Hi, Uncle Jade!” Argo waved.
“Hello, nephew.”
“Is that one of your fancy mushrooms, Uncle Jade?” Cas asked, standing on his tiptoes to try and get a better look. Jade held it down so the twins could see. Cas’s eyes sparkled in fascination while Argo screwed up his face in displeasure.
“It is,” He said. “And I believe this is why you two came to visit us.”
“What do you mean?” (Y/N) asked, picking Grim up to rescue him from Floyd’s teasing.
Jade turned to his brother. “Floyd, do you recognize this?”
Floyd stuck his tongue out. “Bleh, yeah. You made that nasty tea from that mushroom the other day and tricked me into drinking it.”
“Tea?” (Y/N) asked. “Oh, was that the tea in the thermos you had the other day?” She frowned. “You tricked me into drinking it too, Floyd. You said it was tasty and so excited to share it with me, then laughed when I started choking on it because it was so bitter.”
Floyd had picked the boys up, holding one in each arm. “That’s because it’s funny when it’s you, Shrimpy.”
She narrowed her eyes. “Mmhmm, sure.”
“I apologize that you were roped into my experiment, (Y/N),” Jade said, not looking or sounding apologetic at all. “But I believe it led to an even more fascinating result than I could have hoped for. This,” He held up the terrarium. “Is an oracleum mycoculous, the fortune-telling mushroom. A very rare specimen a fellow mycologist friend of mine sent me from the Shaftlands. He knew I attended NRC and he asked me to study the effects of magic on this particular species.”
“A fortune-telling mushroom?” (Y/N) asked. “Like, if you cut an apple in half the shape of the seeds can tell your future?”
“It’s a bit more extreme than that. It’s rumored that when prepared in a certain way, eating an oracleum mycoculous can give one insight into future challenges, typically giving a person a strong intuition into choices they should make in the near future. My colleague had heard rumors that making a tea with the mushroom infused with magic could give the person who drinks it clearer visions of the future. I only intended for Floyd to drink it and record any dreams or premonitions he had, but if you drank it as well, Prefect,” he booped Cas on the nose, who giggled while intently studying the mushroom. “It would seem we were able to bring your future children from your future to our present.”
(Y/N) gulped hard, finally starting to accept what she had been suspecting this whole time. “Our children?” She squeaked.
Floyd nuzzled the two boys. “Aww, Shrimpy and I had little guppies!” He smiled wickedly. “How many tries do you think it took before we ended up with these fry?”
(Y/N) felt her face explode with heat. “Floyd! That - I mean - We’re not even together!”
“If I may,” Jade said. “The visions associated with the oracleum mycoculous are said to only be possibilities. It shows you options for possible futures depending on certain choices made. So perhaps your boys were drawn from one of these possible futures.”
(Y/N) felt dizzy at ‘your boys.’ “Okay, wait, hang on-”
“Mama, are you okay?” Cas asked. He reached out to her. (Y/N) felt a thud in her chest and took him from Floyd.
“I’m okay, Cas,” She said, trying to hide her anxiety from showing on her face. “Just a little confused, is all. I bet your actual parents are really worried about you.” She turned to Jade. “So, how do we fix this?”
He smiled slyly. “I have no idea. But wouldn’t it be fascinating to find out?”
“Absolutely not.”
The Leech family, plus (Y/N) and Grim, although, if the current children were to be believed, (Y/N) would be part of the Leech family in the future, stood in front of an annoyed-looking Professor Crewel in the alchemy classroom.
“Sorry?” (Y/N) asked.
“I absolutely do not approve of any relationship of this sort. Any pup of mine could do much better.”
“Aww, Beakfish,” Floyd pouted. “That’s no way to talk to your future son-in-law, is it?”
Crewel frowned deeper, his grip tightening on his teaching pointer that often doubled as a whip. He obviously didn’t approve of Floyd commenting on his pseudo-adoption of (Y/N). Although he had been in somewhat of a custody battle with Headmage Crowley in that regard. (Y/N) anticipated a negative reaction from her one father figure, but at least there was a higher chance Professor Crewel would be able to get something done in a timely manner, rather than the crow-coded Headmage dramatically lamenting without much work actually being done.
(Y/N) frowned, feeling her face heat up again. “Sir, we’re not actually together or anything…”
Floyd draped himself over her shoulders, trapping her in a backward hug. “Aww, my wifey Shrimpy is so mean to me. Why’s your Mama so mean, guppies?”
“Mama’s not mean!” Argo defended, taking one of her hands. “Mama’s the nicest! She lets me stay up past bedtime and eat tons of ice cream and watch PG-13 stuff on TV!”
(Y/N) looked down skeptically. “Do I really do that?”
He smiled slyly. “If I say it’s in the future then would you?”
“Nice try.”
“Grandpa,” Cas said, looking up at Crewel with big puppy eyes. “You’re going to help us get back to Mama and Papa, right?”
Crewel faltered. Not even he was totally immune to the child’s charms. He crossed his arms, huffing in feigned annoyance. “Well, of course we’ll get them home. But after we’re having a serious conversation about your future prospects, pup.”
“Like I said, we’re not even together,” (Y/N) protested weakly.
“Jade,” Crewel said, holding out his hand. “The oracleum mycoculous.”
Jade clutched the terrarium close to his chest. “But it’s my only sample. I made the other one into the tea that Floyd and (Y/N) drank.”
Crewel raised an eyebrow. “And we are in this situation because of that. I’ll have to use the mushroom to reverse-engineer an antidote to send these two back.” Jade reluctantly handed the mushroom over. “I’ll start research right away. Hopefully, we’ll get some answers soon. In the meantime, I’ll have to entrust these two in your care.”
“Not a problem,” (Y/N) said. “You guys can stay at Ramshackle with me and Uncle Grim.” (Y/N) caught herself, wondering when it had become so easy to refer to her friends as ‘Uncle’ as her theoretical future children did.
“Papa’s gonna come to, right?” Argo said.
“Absolutely not!” Crewel said, griping the terrarium so tightly (Y/N) was afraid it might break.
Floyd sniffed. “You’re going to tell me I can’t be with my children? You’re going to separate us?”
“You’re already on thin ice, don’t push your luck.”
“I’ll take care of it, Professor,” (Y/N) said before tempers could rise any further. “Thanks for helping us with this.”
“Of course, dear,” Crewel said, his tone softening. He cast a suspicious eye at Floyd, who was getting a bit too close to the alchemy ingredients along the walls, lifting the boys up high so they could get a better look. “Just let me know if you need any help.”
In the end, Floyd did end up staying at Ramshackle for the night. (Y/N) could hear the three Leech boys loudly playing in the living room while she tried to make something quick for dinner. Macaroni and cheese would probably work. Kids liked mac and cheese, right? Even if they were mer kids from the future. Or, half mer? (Y/N) wondered how that worked, specifically biologically speaking. Did the boys have mer forms like Floyd and Jade did? Did they look more human in some parts and more eel-like in others? It occurred to her that there was still so much basic mer and beast-man biology she had no idea about. But how do you ask that sort of thing without it being awkward about it?
“Mama!” Cas called, poking his head in the kitchen. “Can Argo and I go pick out our rooms?”
“I call the big one!” Argo yelled, sprinting past his brother up the stairs.
“Hey, don’t run inside!” (Y/N) warned.
“Yeah, and you can’t have the big one,” Cas scolded. “That’s Mama and Papa’s room.”
(Y/N) gulped. A sly smile stretched over Floyd’s face. “Yeah, where is our room? I should go unpack right?”
(Y/N) shook her head, trying to get rid of certain thoughts while organizing others. She clapped her hands together. “I know. Why don’t we build a pillow fort in the living room? It’ll be like a big sleepover.” She weakly kicked at Floyd’s shin, more out of show than real malice. “Because that’s all this is.”
“Like when there was that big storm!” Argo said, racing back down the stairs. “And the lights all went out and we had to stay away from the windows so we made that big tent in the middle of the kitchen!”
(Y/N) smiled fondly at a memory she hadn’t made yet. “Sure, like that.”
“I know where the biggest pillows are!” Grim called, racing up the stairs. The boys eagerly followed, making plans for their blanket fort that would stretch all across NRC campus.
Floyd sighed dramatically, draping his full body weight over (Y/N)’s back as she tried to stir the macaroni and cheese. “How’d we get so lucky, huh?” (Y/N) purposefully ignored him, something that didn’t slip Floyd’s attention. “They’ve got my looks, of course, handsome devils. Hey, do you think we live on land or in the sea? Ooh, or we could do both! Like a summer house! I bet I make a ton of money, I got to take care of you and the guppies, right? Aww, you’d be a cute little house wife. I’ll come home after work and you’ll say ‘Welcome home!’, I can’t do your voice too good, it’s higher than mine, you know? But you’ll say ‘Welcome home!’ and I’ll give you a big hug and say ‘I’m home!’ And I’ll bring you and the kids gifts and we’ll play games after dinner, and when they’re all tuckered out and in bed I’ll pick you up and go to our room and I’ll squeeze you real tight and say-”
“Floyd!” Floyd jumped at (Y/N)’s sudden exclamation. He felt her body tense and then sag in exhaustion. “Just… You shouldn’t say that kind of stuff, you know?”
Floyd blinked. “Huh? Why not, Shrimpy?”
“You know why.” She didn’t say anything after that. Floyd let the remark sit. After a minute of silence between them, listening to the cheering and shouting from the boys upstairs, (Y/N) finally sighed and said, “You shouldn’t say stuff like that to a girl. Not when you don’t mean it.”
Floyd chuckled feebly, his heart not in it. He felt torn between squeezing tighter and getting as far away from here as possible. “How do you know if I mean it or not?”
“Because you’re always like this. You’ve been like this since we’ve met, you’re like this with everyone. And you know-” She cut herself off. She seemed to be deliberating something serious and finally continued. “And you know how I feel about you.”
Floyd felt his mouth go dry, his heart started thumping a million miles an hour, and his stomach turned into knots. He had to say something. This was one of those moments where you had to say something, right? Of course he knew how she felt, it was pretty obvious to everyone how she felt, Floyd included. And the garden, especially what had happened at the garden. Or, rather, what hadn’t happened.
Now, had he taken advantage of that little fact over the school year to wring out some more entertainment out of the magicless Prefect? Well, yes, of course he had. Had he meant to have his own feelings grow into something he couldn’t manage over that time? No, but it had happened anyway, sneaking up on him and socking him in the heart like a mantis shrimp when he least expected it.
He tried to say it without saying it. He tried to show it without saying it. But why couldn’t he just say it?
“(Y/N),” Floyd started. “I-”
There was a crash from the living room, accompanied by a shriek and laughter.
“Papa!” Cas called. “We need help!”
Whatever seriousness had come over Floyd’s countenance disappeared in the blink of an eye. His signature wide grin cut across his face. If anyone was paying attention, they would notice his smile didn’t reach his eyes. He quickly reached over (Y/N)’s shoulder and stole a spoon, scooping a chunk of the mac and cheese from the pot to shove into his mouth before dashing out into the living room.
(Y/N) stuck her tongue out at his retreating form before turning back to the stove. As she slid the dish of mac and cheese into the oven to finish cooking, she paused. Had Floyd used her real name?
“Argo!” Cas whispered in the darkness.
A large quilt hung over their heads, precariously draped between several chairs. Pillows were stacked on all sides making soft walls and they had layered several duvets and couch cushions below to create an improvised mattress. Mama was on the couch, which served as the left-most barrier of their fort, the quilt draping down close to her head with Uncle Grim curled up on her lap. Papa lay sprawled between Cas and Argo, arms and legs out like a starfish.
“Argo, are you awake?” Cas asked again.
He heard his brother mumble something before his head popped up from the other side of their dad, hair flattened against one side of his head and sticking out in every direction on the other. “Wassup?” Argo said sleepily.
“Did you hear what Mama said with Grandpa Crewel?” Argo rubbed his eyes and shook his head. “She said she wasn’t dating Papa!”
Argo squinted at his brother in the darkness. “But they are. Mama and Papa said they started dating at Night Raven College.”
“But they’re not yet. Remember what Uncle Jade said? We’re only from one future. What if Mama and Papa don’t start dating in this future?”
It took Argo a second to register what Cas was suggesting. His eyes went wide and he gasped loudly. Cas shushed him and Papa mumbled in his sleep, finally turning over on his stomach without waking up.
“You mean we won’t exist?” Argo whispered, panicked. Cas nodded. “What do we do?”
Cas smiled. “Don’t worry, I have a plan.”
The next day, amid a bright blue sky painted with thin wispy clouds, Floyd had insisted on visiting Heartslabyul to “Show off his guppies to his best friend, Goldfishy!” (Y/N) sarcastically predicted that this could only end well.
The group of five had, as anticipated, balked at the two visitors and their explanation for being there.  But the boys had taken to seeing their pseudo-uncles like, well, like merboys to water. They were outside, near the rose garden maze. Argo was practicing some kind of gymnastics, holding Deuce’s hands tightly, walking up his stomach and chest to flip in a practice summersault. Cas munched happily on a cinnamon roll almost as big as his head while watching in fascination as Ace showed off some card tricks.
“Have you heard anything from Professor Crewel?” Trey asked, setting down a new plate of danishes on the table.
“Nothing yet,” (Y/N) said, taking a napkin and wiping off some smeared frosting from Cas’s face. “But I assume something like this will take some time to get right.”
“And you’re…” Trey waved his hand in a circle. “Doing alright?”
“I’m… Okay.” (Y/N) looked over at the boys now playing tag. “This isn’t the worst magic thing that’s happened since I’ve been here.”
“That doesn't mean it makes everything easy,” Riddle commented, gazing over the rim of his tea cup. “Especially given your… choice of partner.”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes. “I’m well aware. Floyd’s not too bad, though. He’s pretty good with kids.”
Riddle huffed. “Considering he basically is one himself I’m not entirely surprised.”
“Hmm? Are you talking about me, Goldfish?” Floyd said, appearing out of nowhere. He grasped the back of Riddle’s chair, pulling back so Riddle was thrown off balance, throwing his arms out to try and reestablish equilibrium. Riddle scowled, face turning red. He looked like he was going to say something, but bit his tongue as Cas and Argo ran up and started digging into the pastries. “It’s not nice to gossip about people.”
“Yeah,” Argo said, a mouth full of cherry danish. “It’s impolite. You’re the one telling us about manners all the time.”
“All the time?” Riddle asked.
“When you come over for dinner!” Cas chimed in. “You come over with Papa cause you work together and we all eat and you help me and Argo study!” Argo stuck out his tongue at the last part.
Riddle went from red to white. “We work together?”
“Yeah! You and Papa are best friends!”
(Y/N) was momentarily worried that Riddle was going to faint.
“And Uncle Ace and Uncle Deuce come over all the time! Uncle Deuce is going to teach me how to ride a blast cycle!” Argo said.
“We’ll revisit that later,” (Y/N) said, ruffling his hair.
“Can Uncle Trey still teach me how to bake?” Cas asked. “Uncle Cater was going to help me make a Magicam account to show off the stuff we make! Before Argo eats all of it.”
“Don’t be so good at baking and I won’t be so good at eating,” Argo replied, stuffing another danish in his mouth before darting off, Cas close behind him.
“I feel dizzy,” Riddle mumbled.
“Sounds like you’re keeping busy,” Ace said, watching Floyd duck around the hedges with the twins.
“When am I not?” (Y/N) said. “But at least it sounds like we’re all still close in the future. I like that.”
“It sounds like you don’t go home, though,” Cater said, mostly to himself. “Back to your world, I mean.”
(Y/N) hummed. “Maybe home is what you make of it.”
“Hey, Goldfishy?”
Riddle growned, shrugging off Floyd’s arm for leaning on him. “What is it, Floyd?”
Floyd was quiet for a moment, such a rare occurrence that Riddle looked up at him to make sure he had been heard. Floyd was looking out at the rose garden, watching the two children darting around bushes, chasing and being chased by Ace, Deuce, and Grim. (Y/N) stood nearby, watching with a serine look on her face, chiming in every once and a while to make sure the younger boys (and the older ones, too, let’s be honest) were being careful of their surroundings.
“You know about all that formal romantic stuff right?” Floyd finally asked.
“I don’t know about ‘romantic.’ What are you getting at?”
Floyd has a lazy smile on his face. “Do you know how to write a love letter?”
Riddle felt himself blush. “I’m not getting in the middle of whatever exploits you’re up to, romantic or otherwise.”
“Aw, come on,” Floyd said, poking Riddle’s check, causing Riddle to swat at him like a fly. “(Y/N)’s real nice, you know? She deserves something fancy. And I want-” It was rare that Floyd was at  a loss for words. Riddle looked up at him, seeing determination and focus scrunch his brow as Floyd tried to choose his next words. “I guess I want to prove it to her. That I like her. That I really like her. That I-” Floyd groaned, letting his body go limp and dragging Riddle with him to crash to the lawn. “See? I’m not good at this kind of stuff! Help your best friend out!”
Riddle yelled, “If you weren’t so cavalier all the time, you’d be able to focus when you had to be serious!”
Ace stalked through the high hedges of the rose maze, having been called It in the boys’ game of hide-and-seek. “Better watch out,” He called in a sing-song voice. “Uncle Ace is going to find you!”
“Psst!” Ace whipped around, seeing Cas peeking out from behind a hedge, waving him over. He went over, seeing Cas, Argo, Deuce, and Jade sitting together, huddled under the shade of the maze. Argo had smuggled a few more pastries from breakfast and was tearing them apart to share with the group.
“Jade?” Ace asked. “What are you doing here?”
“My dear nephews called me,” He said.
“Papa let me borrow his phone!” Argo said, holding up the cell, smears of frosting covering the screen. “He doesn't know he let me borrow it, but I’ll give it back before he misses it.”
Cas put his hands on his hips. Ace had never seen a more serious looking eight-year-old. “That’s still stealing, Argo!” He huffed. “Whatever. We have something super important to talk about!”
“Yeah!” Argo chimed in. “We need to make sure Mama and Papa kiss!”
Deuce choked on his cinnamon roll. Jade tilted his head and smiled.
“Oya?” Jade said. “That’s quite the goal.”
“We want to get Mama and Papa together!” Cas clarified. “Because they’re in love and stuff! And we want to exist in the future!”
“I don’t know how much we should be messing with (Y/N)’s love life,” Deuce said. “It feels kind of invasive, you know?”
“Anyway,” Ace said, crossing his arms. “It’s Floyd’s fault anyway.”
“Is it?” Jade asked.
Ace gulped and scooted away a little before continuing. “Well, yeah. Come on, we all know (Y/N) likes Floyd, for some reason, whatever, that’s on her. If Floyd can’t string together 2+2 then that’s on him.”
“Floyd isn’t exactly subtle with his emotions, either,” Jade said. “He might have issues directing them to a specific conclusion, however.”
“So, you think he likes (Y/N), too?” Deuce asked.
“Undeniably.”
Ace rubbed the back of his neck. “You know, liking is one thing, but we are sort of talking about future marriage and kids here.” He nodded his head at the twins.
“But Mama and Papa are in love!” Cas insisted. “And the stories Mama tells us says true love conquers all!”
“That does sound like the sort of sappy thing (Y/N) would say,” Ace relented.
“I mean,” Deuce said. “We can’t really force anything, right? If they decide they want to get together that’s up to them. But,” He winked at Cas and Argo. “A little push couldn't hurt, right?”
“Great!” Cas said. “Phase one is complete! Now, we need recruits for phase two!”
It was Day 3 of having Argo and Cas at NRC. (Y/N) was fretting about what to do with the boys while she and Grimm went to class.
“I can skip class and stay here!” Grim volunteered.
“Absolutely not,” (Y/N). “Your grades need all the help they can get.” Floyd had offered to spend the day with the boys as well, when he had tried to worm his way into spending another night at Ramshackle. But (Y/N) had insisted he go sleep in his own bed at his own dorm. And it totally had nothing to do with the fact about how her heart had fluttered the morning after his first night there, when he’d woken up with a big yawn, hair a mess, and smiled lazily at her while wishing her a good morning. Nope. Absolutely not.
“We’ll be okay, Mama!” Cas promised. She had set him and Argo up at the kitchen table with a box of crayons and coloring books she had snagged from the Mystery Shop (Sam really did have everything in stock). “Argo and I will stay right here and not do anything sneaky!” Argo punched his brother’s shoulder. (Y/N) raised an eyebrow, even more nervous about leaving the boys in the large dilapidated dorm for an entire school day.
“Don’t worry about it, Prefect!” Phineas, Ezra, and Gus, the Ramshackle ghosts, said, materializing in the kitchen. “We’ll take care of them.”
(Y/N) sighed in relief. “Thank you, guys. Boys, you be good for the ghosts while Uncle Grim and I are away, okay?”
“Yes, Mama,” They both said dutifully. They listened intently for the sound of the front door closing before jumping up and smiling at the ghosts.
“Okay!” Argo said, clapping his hands. “Phase three of Operation Angelfish is a go!”
For once, everything seemed to be going as normal. (Y/N) and Grim went to classes, got an update on the return potion from Professor Crewel (Just waiting for it to reduce to a concentrated form), had lunch, went to gym, nothing out of the ordinary. Which, as previously established, put (Y/N) on edge.
Everything seemed to be normal. Too normal, as far as (Y/N) was concerned. If she didn’t know better (and she did) it would seem like her friends were going out of their way to make it seem like nothing important was going on. There had been at least three times already where (Y/N) had walked up to a group, only for them to immediately stop talking, or very obviously switch topics, all while casting side-eyes at each other. She also couldn’t help but notice that she hadn’t seen Floyd all day. Well, maybe out of the corner of her eye, or hearing his voice, but it was always cut off, he was pulled away by his brother, or one of her friends suddenly desperately needed her over there right this second.
She tried not to take this as some kind of commentary on the possible future relationship the two out of place children suggested. It wasn’t really that bad, was it? Her having feelings for Floyd? She knew Ace, Deuce, and Grim were pretty shocked when she had first confided in them. (“I think I like Floyd. Thought?” “And prayers.”) And while no one had ever said anything explicitly negative, besides the occasional teasing or complaining about her crush, there wasn’t anything actually encouraging either. (Y/N) knew she let Floyd get away with way too much most of the time, and only after interacting realized how moon-eyed she’d been acting. Half the time she thought Floyd might return her feelings, and the other half felt like he was taking advantage of her swayed good graces. It made her head spin and chest ache.
And now, with Cas and Argo appearing out of nowhere? Saying that they were married in some possible future? Happily married with children? The picture the boys painted was idyllic. The kind of thing (Y/N) had only seen in magazines or at the end of some Jane Austen novel. (Y/N) felt herself blush every time she thought about it, whether it was out of embarrassment or longing, she wasn’t sure. Dinners together, people from NRC coming to visit all the time, (Y/N) bringing traditional holidays from her world to celebrate, a beautiful house by the Coral Sea where the boys would learn to swim in their human and mer forms.
Was there a lingering darkness in the back of her mind that told her this meant she would never go back to her own world again? Sure, of course. Was there a nagging that this was only a possibility, and her own future still had a chance of being completely different? Yes, definitely.
Did that stop her from planning how exactly she would formally confess to Floyd once she made sure Cas and Argo got home safely? Not a chance.
Finally, it was the end of the day. (Y/N) was already planning in her head what to make for dinner when she heard someone call her name. Well, sort of her name.
“Child of man,” Malleus called, raising a hand in greeting from the quad.
“Oh, Horton,” She said, jogging over to him. “Hi, I don’t usually see you around now. How are you?”
Malleus puffed up with pride, a self-satisfied smile on his face. “I’ve been recruited.”
“Recruited?”
“By my future nephews. I’m meant to distract you.”
“Future-? Ah, I see.” (Y/N) had an adorable image flash in her mind of the twins and their doting Uncle Horton. “Any particular reason I’m being distracted?”
“I’m not meant to say.”
If they had managed to wrap Malleus into whatever they were doing, (Y/N) thought it couldn’t do that much harm. Why not let the boys have fun while they were still in the past? But just to be sure…
“Grim, you’ll make sure the house doesn't burn down while I’m gone, right?”
Grim saluted, giving a conspiratorial nod at Malleus before flying away.
Malleus offered his arm which (Y/N) took while they strolled away. “Should I be worried about what you’re all planning?” She asked.
He hummed. “Not at all. Now, have I ever told you about the controversy surrounding bat-styled gargoyles versus griffin-styled gargoyles in 15th century cathedral architecture?”
Floyd was mad. Actually mad. Sure he got annoyed or frustrated every once and awhile, but actually angry? That was a rarity that no one wanted to witness.
Not only had Shrimpy not let him stay the night at her dorm again, which, fine, it was her house, but he’d been trying to see her all day to no avail. Either someone would pull her away, Jade would appear out of nowhere and stall him until she was gone, or they’d just keep missing each other. It would have been one thing if circumstances kept them apart, coincidences were coincidental after all, and it’s not like they had never gone a day without seeing each other. But this was intentional, pointed and deliberate. He was in a Shrimpy drought and the people around him were building a dam.
And he couldn’t find his phone anywhere.
Eventually, he couldn’t take it anymore. His skin felt too tight and all the lights were too bright and he wanted to scream. He cut his last few classes and returned to Octavinelle. He had already started tearing off his jacket and shirt as he walked through the mirror portal, leaving clothing in a scattered trail as he marched his way to the decompression chambers that let out into the surrounding water around the dorm. He jumped into the water, the icy chill shocking his human system. He felt his muscles stretch and a comforting pressure encase his body as he shifted back to his mer-eel form, legs melding together as one as he whipped through the water. He shot through the water, scattering fish as he went. He didn’t have the patience to play with any of them today. He was finding he didn’t have the patience for a lot of things.
She’d try to tell him, once, that she liked him. That maybe she loved him, or that could have been him projecting. (Oh, dear Seven, did he love her?) She’d asked him to meet him in the gardens after school. She said she’d been thinking a lot and there was something extremely important she needed to tell him. He’d poked her, saying she should just tell him now, in the passing period between classes surrounded by curious and eavesdropping classmates. She’d said no, that she still needed to get her thoughts in order. She’d written a letter, she said, that she was holding firmly in her hands, but she thought he would appreciate a more direct approach. So. Garden. After school. She’d be waiting. And then the bell had rung and she’d run off.
And he’d left her waiting.
He hadn’t shown up. He’d heard later that she’d been there so long the grounds keepers had to ask her to leave so they could lock up the bio-dome at night. He’d seen her the next morning, eyes red and puffy, huddled with her first year friends who were speaking in low, comforting tones, trying to be affectionate and reassuring in that awkward way teenage boys did. And he had waltzed right over, picking her up and spinning her around. And she hadn’t mentioned the garden. She hadn’t mentioned the letter. She never mentioned any of it again. They fell back into their old rhythm, the one Floyd knew, the one he was comfortable with, the one he could predict.
He should have gone to the garden.
Why the hell hadn’t he gone to the garden?
Floyd burrowed into a reef section of a shallow, tearing at floating kelp with his claws and snapping jaws. He was trashing and writhing, kicking up the loose sand so it created a hazy cloud around him. The sand started getting in his mouth and eyes but he didn’t care. He welcomed the sting of it.
Argo and Cas being here meant everything was okay, right? If they had kids in the future, it meant everything worked out, right?
Floyd was mad. He was angry.
And he didn’t understand why.
“Floyd!” Floyd looked up, seeing Jade swimming towards him.
He scowled, turning away to focus on wreaking havoc on the underwater flora. “Not now,” He said through gritted teeth.
“Floyd, this isn’t the time-” Jade tried to reach out and touch his brother. Before he could make contact, Floyd whipped around with a snarl, swiping at Jade with his sharp claws.Jade quickly jerked out of the way, his surprise quickly melting to aggravation. Jade surged forward, catching Floyd around the stomach and tackling him to the sea floor. Floyd gnashed his teeth, clawing at Jade’s back. “What exactly do you think you’re going to accomplish here?”
“Get off!” Floyd writhed, wrapping his tail around Jade and spinning to loosen his brother’s grip. Momentarily free, Floyd took the opportunity to lunge at Jade again.
A fight, good. This is exactly what he needed. He needed to do something physical, something violent, something to get his mind out of whatever stoop he was stuck in, something so he didn’t have to focus on how bad he felt, something where the outcome could be predictable and certain, even if the certainty was pain. That was better than not knowing. That was better than letting feelings he couldn’t control take over his mind.
He and Jade wrestled, throwing each other into the sand, striking with teeth and claws, whipping with their tails. They didn’t cast any spells, which is the only way each twin was able to understand the severity of their fight, even if it was a subconscious understanding. Fighting was one thing, using magic against each other was another.
Finally, the two faced off, gills heaving with underwater breaths, scratches and gouges bleeding, eyes locked. Jade pushed back a little, careful not to make any sudden movements.
“Do you really think this is the best use of your time right now?” He asked.
Floyd snapped his teeth. “Who asked you? What do you know about anything, anyway?”
“I know (Y/N) tried to confess to you.”
Floyd froze, then felt another surge of anger bubble under his skin. Why did Jade know? What right did he have to know (Y/N)’s inner thoughts when Floyd himself couldn’t even have them?
“She told me,” Jade continued. “Or, I gathered from context clues. She asked if you had ever dated anyone back home, what sort of person you liked. She wanted to know if you prefer meeting in person to discuss important things or if she should leave a letter. Not that she really needed to discuss much. I would say it’s been rather obvious to anyone paying attention for the last few months. The real issue, I find, is why you haven’t confessed yourself.”
Floyd yelled, grappling Jade and sinking his teeth into his shoulder. Jade bit his lip to keep from crying out. He took advantage of the grapple to twist and pull Floyd into a headlock.
“I went there,” Jade continued through gritted teeth. “I went to the garden. I was planning on spying, I thought it’d be fun. But you never showed up. I kept waiting, and so did she, and you never appeared. Why in all of the deep blue sea didn’t you come?”
“I don’t know!” Floyd confessed. He went limp in Jade’s grasp, all the fight going out of him. He let out a choked cry, something Jade hadn’t heard from his brother in who knows how long. “I don’t know, I don’t know!”
Floyd sank to the rocky coral outcropping, collapsing. Jade observed him for a moment. He swam down, curling up next to Floyd.
“She still has feelings for you, you know.”
Floyd groaned deep in his chest. “I can’t.”
“Can’t what?”
“Can’t tell her. I can’t hear her say it. What happens after that, huh? What happens after we both say it?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s the problem! How do I know what to do? Do I change, does she? And what if neither of us do? I can’t risk it, I can’t lose her!”
“You’re losing her anyway.”
Floyd felt his anger flash again and lashed out with a claw which Jade easily dodged. The fight drained out of him again and he flopped back down.
Jade regarded Floyd. When he determined that Floyd wasn’t about to fly off the handle again, he came closer. “Don’t you think it’s selfish, keeping your feelings all to yourself?”
“Eels are cowards,” Floyd mumbled.
“But humans are brave.” Floyd peaked up at Jade. “They can’t survive long in water, they don’t have the heightened senses of beastmean, nor the longevity of fairies. They don’t have claws or teeth or endless magic supplies. But they’re brave and stubborn. That’s how they’ve lasted so long, become such a force in the world. And there’s a certain human we know that is exemplary in that regard.”
Floyd hummed. “She’s amazing. She’s pretty and smart and clever and strong and… What if I mess up, Jade?”
Jade patted Floyd’s back. “Then I’m sure she’ll let you know and you’ll figure it out together. Relationships require two people, after all.”
“You think she’ll forgive me? From before?”
“If you apologize, I’m sure she will. And, brother dear, I have the perfect setting for such an apology. Come on, we need to get you fitted with your suit. And maybe some stitches there above your eye.”
“Ow!” (Y/N) cried as she banged her shin for the third time.
“Sorry, Mama!” Argo said, pulling her hand to maneuver her around the low table.
“It’s fine. Are you sure I have to keep this blindfold on?” She reached up for it.
“No!” Cas gasped. “It’s a surprise!”
(Y/N) sighed and let herself be pulled along, gritting her teeth when she stubbed her toe on the side of a chair.
After Malleus had brought her back to Ramshackle after their walk and gargoyle lecture, she had immediately been set upon by the boys who kept insisting that she absolutely not look anywhere near the backyard. Almost immediately after walking in the door, Vil appeared seemingly out of nowhere and shoved a garment bag in her hands. The dress was beautiful, of course, and probably worth more than she could ever afford, in her old world or this one. It seemed like almost everyone she knew was bustling around the dorm, being extremely secretive. Finally, her boys had come to get her, giving her a blindfold to wear and gingerly escorting her down stairs.
‘Her boys.’ When exactly had she started thinking of them like that?
(Y/N) felt a cool breeze as she stepped outside. She could feel the boys walking her up the hill in the backyard, stopping suddenly.
“Okay, Mama,” Cas said, his voice bubbling with excitement. “You can look now!”
(Y/N) removed the blindfold and gasped at what she saw. The large oak tree in the back dripped with tiny string lights and paper lanterns. Fireflies gently bobbed around in the oncoming twilight. A small table, (Y/N) recognized it from the Heartslabyul rose garden, had been set up underneath the glowing bows, decorated with a candelabra.
“Oh, boys,” (Y/N) said, taking each of their hands. “This is beautiful. Is this what you’ve been up to all day?”
“Mostly!” Argo said.
“Yup, now it’s phase 4!” Cas said.
“Phase 4?” (Y/N) asked. The boys just dragged her over to the table and pulled out the chair for her. They made to rush away before Argo hastily corrected himself and pulled out a wireless speaker from behind the tree trunk. He took out what suspiciously looked like Floyd’s phone, sinking it up to the speaker. Soon, it began to play a string quartet. Argo smiled triumphantly, he and Cas taking hands and rushing back to the dorm.
(Y/N) smoothed her dress and sat down, watching the fireflies and sunset with the calming music in the background. There was a tea set on the table and she poured a cup. She paused for a moment before filling up the cup across from her as well. As she sipped the tea, she saw the silhouettes of Cas and Argo dragged someone around the side of the dorm. In the low light, she couldn’t exactly tell who it was, but based on the lanky form and fond body language, she guessed it was Floyd. She sighed inwardly, half excited to see him and half dreading it, especially in such a romantic location. So this way the boys’ real plan. She wasn’t sure exactly how to feel about that.
She stood up as Floyd came closer, stepping into the circle of light around the tree, ready to disperse whatever plot the boys had set up, before gasping. “Floyd! What happened?” Although Floyd was wearing a nice suit and tie, he had a black eye, a split lip, and a cut above one of his eyebrows that looked like it had been hastily patched with stitches. She rushed to him, her hands hovering around him. “Are you okay? Should we go to the infirmary? Who did those stitches - why do you have stitches!” She frowned. “Honestly, I keep telling you to stop getting into fights! One day you’re going to fight someone stronger than you and then where will we be? Look at you, you’re still bleeding!”
Floyd only grinned, leaning down so his forehead touched hers. “Shrimpy’s worried about me.”
She weakly pushed him off. “Of course I’m worried. Gosh, did the boys see you like this?”
Before she could take a step away, he wrapped his arms around her, crushing her in a tight hug. “I like when you’re worried about me.”
“Is that why you keep doing stupid stuff?”
Floyd hummed. “Maybe. If it makes you pay attention to me, then it’s worth it, right?”
(Y/N) didn’t know how to reply. She felt heat building up in her checks, a mixture of embarrassment and longing and something else she couldn’t quite place.
“Floyd, I-” “I like you, (Y/N).” She froze at his words. “I couldn’t say it before. I mean, I could, but I didn’t. And that’s my fault. It was bad, I was bad, I still am bad. I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. I just - You’re so much of everything. And I want that everything. I want us to share it, forever. I want to see you all the time because you make me so happy and I want to make you just as happy. I think we can be, together. I promise I’ll try, really hard. And I-” Floyd sniffed as (Y/N) pulled back. His face was flushed, tears dotting his lashes. He was trying to keep up his usual confidant grin, but it crumpled at the edges. “I’m sorry, Shrimpy. I’m so sorry I hurt you, that I acted like nothing was wrong, that nothing happened. I love you, you know that right? You know it now. I love you.”
“Oh, Floyd,” She muttered, brushing his hair away from his face. “If I kiss you now, is your lip going to start bleeding again?”
Floyd broke out into a real smile, letting out a choked laugh. He crushed (Y/N) to him, picking her up and spinning her around. He peppered kisses on her face while she giggled too. She took his face in her hands, gently lowering him closer and kissing him.
Back at the dorm, spying out the windows, Cas and Argo high fived.
The next morning was bright and sunny and (Y/N) couldn’t help but think it was all for her.
Cas and Argo were making their rounds in the quad, saying goodbye to their uncles, many of whom grew misty eyed and the imminent departure. Floyd was squeezing her hand, rubbing the back of it with his thumb.
“Alright, pups, everyone settle down,” Professor Crewel called, waving everyone over. He took out a paper bag and shook out two dark purple oval candies, handing one to each boy. “Here, this will get you back to your time in the blink of an eye.” He patted each of their heads. “Be good, pups.”
The two took the candies and rushed over to Floyd and (Y/N). Floyd crouched down and picked each boy one at a time, throwing them in the air and catching them before repeating with the other. (Y/N) pulled them both into a tight hug, kissing the tops of their heads.
“I can’t wait to meet you boys for the first time,” She said.
“We’ll see you soon, Mama!” Argo said.
“Mama,” Cas said. “You’re going to take care of Papa, right?”
(Y/N) laughed as Floyd frowned. “Hey, shouldn't I be the one taking care of Mama?”
Cas frowned, a perfect mirror of his father. “Only kinda. Mama’s the one who does all the taking care of.”
“Well, when you get home, tell your Papa and he promised you ice cream.”
(Y/N) quickly whipped away the tears that were forming in her eyes. She cleared her throat to try and speak without faltering. “Speaking of, I’m sure your Mama and Papa are worried about you. I think it’s time to head off. But one more hug.” They crashed back into her open arms. Floyd threw his arms around all of them, squeezing tight.
Finally, the Cas and Argo each took the others hand, popping the candy in their mouth. Cas screwed up his face and Argo stuck out his tongue at the bitter taste of it. (Y/N) couldn’t help but laugh, comparing their reaction to hers when Floyd had first gotten her to drink the oracleum mycoculous tea. It seemed there was no good way to mask that taste.
Before their eyes, the twins started to fade out, as if they had been projections. They stared in fascination at their disappearing bodies. They looked up and waved and everyone waved back. Eventually, they slipped out of view. The group waited another moment, giving some sort of solemn respect to the family they would meet again in the future before dispersing.
“So,” Floyd, leaning down to speak quietly to (Y/N). “You never did answer me, Shrimpy.”
“Answer what?”
He grinned deviously and (Y/N) immediately regretted asking. “How many times you think it took before we got them.”

Humans Are Extinct (Yandere!TWST x Fem!Reader) Monster AU pt 12
Tumblr media
(Idia often curls in on himself even when sitting in a chair. Usually it is to make himself smaller because he is noticeably taller and lankier than the other students. Idia was so stressed to leave the Isle of Woe that he couldn't attend NRC until Ortho was grown enough to attend with him. Ortho is brilliant and mentally advanced for his age, which is why the brothers didn't wait until Ortho turned 25 like the usual maturity would be for a Shinigami to attend. Idia is 88 years old.)
Warnings; yandere, multiple yanderes, platonic and romantic yanderes, yandere behavior, obsessive behavior, possessive behavior, mention of injury, mention of death, very few are happy with recent events, Leona cleared of all wrong-doing, injury, Regular Lions cannot purr but Nemean Lions can, Dragons can purr, Dragon, Raiju, Crow, Selkie, Cervitaur, Vampire bat, Sphinx, Satyr, Faun, Werewolf, Shinigami,
~~~~~~~~
Your eyes slowly opened with no small amount of effort, feeling yourself slipping back into the waking world as you lay still. A dull throb in your leg vaguely made you wonder why it hurt so much and just what happened. Looking around, you seemed to be in some kind of infirmary, several beds lined up against the walls and split by privacy screens. Laying over your blankets was a familiar black and white fur coat.
Memories returned slowly to you as you felt the throbbing persist in your thigh and almost revive with a passion. You had been attacked on your first- and likely last- outing into the forests around Night Raven and an unlikely hero came to your aid. Honestly, you thought Leona just hated you based off of the way he had first interacted with you. It was hard to think that now after the sheer effort he put in to help you.
Grim was laying on your stomach, curled up tightly and clearly deep in sleep. Holding your left hand was a familiar horned figure, both hands holding onto you and his head lay resting on his arms. Hanging upsidedown from the rafters above him was a slumbering Lilia, wrapped in his own wings. Next to Malleus was Sebek, his chin resting on the bed and snoring ever so slightly. At the foot of the bed lay Silver, his head bowed and arms crossed as he slept sitting up with his legs tucked beneath him.
Holding your right hand was professor Divus, looking oddly exposed without his fur coat on even as he slept soundlessly in the chair next to your bed. Next to him lay professor Trein, his cat Lucius curled up in his arms that lay on the bed. Further down, with his back laying up against Trein's winged-feline half and his legs up on Silver's haunches was Leona. Laying in the bed next to your own was a sleeping Crowley, his wings hanging off of either side of his bed.
You almost didn't want to move given the many sleeping males around you, but your leg was starting to cramp up and it was not a pleasant feeling. The movement of your leg was enough to rouse Grim, his blue eyes slowly cracking open as he stuck his tongue out in a yawn. It didn't take long for him to look up at you, his wings flaring out when he saw you were awake and a thrilled smile taking over his feline features.
"You're awake!"
The little cat-beast leaped up to hug you, wrapping his little paws around your neck and even using his ripped wings to hug your shoulders. His loud shout roused the others quickly. All around you eyes snapped open and hunched sleeping figures sat upright in awareness, several looking to you first in the confusion of the moment.
"(Y/n)," Lilia almost sang as he dropped from the rafters to land gracefully, leaning over Malleus' shoulder and pushing down the Dragon's wing to smile at you, "welcome back to the world of the living!"
"What happened?"
"Poachers got their filthy paws on you. You should have never been allowed to leave school grounds without at least a Housewarden. A mistake that won't be made again."
Before you could respond, Malleus' voice rumbled out in a tone deeper than usual, almost sounding strained as if he had been shouting.
"You should have never been taken from Diasomnia's protection."
"But I-"
"Quiet now, my sweet child of man. It is simply fact. My Hoard is at risk because of this foolish notion of shared duty. From now on, I do not care who has been selected to guard you officially, either myself or another member of the Hoard will be guarding you in addition. I clearly cannot trust the others to protect you as you need to be."
"... Tsuno, what happened to your voice?"
"It is good to hear you use that silly name you've gifted me once more. Nothing you need to worry yourself about now, soft one. What matters is you are awake, and I owe an apology and debt to Kingscholar."
A scoff came from the Lion who was now standing, his eyes refusing to meet that of Malleus. He seemed less than comfortable with the attention on him and almost seemed like he didn't want whatever it was Malleus was offering him.
"I don't want a damn thing from an overgrown lizard like you. I just stayed to make sure that Mousey woke up. Got no reason to be here now."
"Wait, Leona, please."
"The hell you want, Mousey?"
"... Thank you. You saved Grim and I from those poachers. Without you, we would have been dead."
"It's my job as a Housewarden, even if I hate looking after defenseless little mice and cubs like the two of you."
"Still, I appreciate it more than I can say."
"Just stop thanking me. I don't want your praise."
Leona was clearly becoming flustered as he tried to play it off and play it cool, the softest of purrs rumbling from his chest betraying how he actually felt. No matter if he sneered or tried to chase you away from him, you knew now what a gentle beast Leona truly was and it warmed your heart to know that beneath his gruff nature he was soft and kind. The beastly Lion had saved you from the vicious pack of wolves and put his life on the line to protect yours.
"At least let me cook something for you? When my leg works again, that is."
"Well," his ears noticeably perked up when you mentioned food and a slight grin pulled at his lips, "guess I can let you repay me, if you really want to. Just so you know, I'm a picky eater and I'll make you remake it if I don't like what you give me."
Sebek make an indignant scoff sound that was almost like a choke, as if he couldn't believe the way the Lion spoke to you. His hand rest on his weapon and he looked ready to start shouting but a quick look from Malleus quieted the loud student. In the interim, Divus moved the blankets and his fur coat from your leg to check your injury. Trein was quick to aid the Selkie and retrieve scissors to cut the wrap as well as getting a clean roll to rebind your wound.
"You may struggle to walk for a while. The damage done by the serrated blade was deep and your muscles were ripped up by the teeth of the blade. You are a very lucky Pup that Leona found you when he did, those poachers- or what was left of what we found of them- belonged to a notorious group of powerful magic-using criminals wanted across Twisted Wonderland. As furious as I am with that pup Jade, they would have killed him if he was there to defend you. No one less than a Housewarden would have been able to render aid, let alone save your life."
"Which is why you will not be leaving the school grounds without one Housewarden and Vice-Housewarden or a Staff member. I should have stayed firm and denied your request to ever step foot off of campus, clearly you need to be watched at all times. I'm already working with Mr. Shroud on your new collars and they will be ready some time today. He had better hurry! My baby bird is at stake!"
Crowley was furious with himself that he ever agreed to let you leave, knowing how the visiting representatives would react to you being wounded so close to the school. On top of all of the trouble Crowley already faced he had just received word that Hades- Idia and Ortho's ancestor- was on his way to the school. Hades took Crowley's last Human away due to his inability to allow the Human to interact with others and the isolation drove her mad, now he was sure to take you away because Crowley left your leash too loose and you were injured as a result. Crowley no longer saw any point in hiding what was on the way.
"In about two days time, representatives from almost every Kingdom and Queendom will arrive to asses your wellbeing. From your living conditions to your physical health, and even to your mental health, they will be judging it all. Should they deem Night Raven College unequipped to keep you safe and healthy, you will be removed from our care."
"What if I don't want to go anywhere?"
"It won't matter. You are the last of an extinct species, your safety and needs come first, your wants are secondary."
Malleus seemed to be furious at this, his eyes glowing and wings flaring out. Apparently Vargas didn't have the chance to speak with Lilia about this yet as Malleus clearly had not been made aware of the situation beforehand. The Dragon was not pleased.
"If they dare try to take a member of my Hoard they will pay dearly for their folly."
"If Hades decides this place is unsafe, even you will not be able to stop him from taking her.
"Hades is arriving?"
"Yes, and he will be here sooner than the representatives. Ortho told him what happened and he is displeased, to say the least."
This news seemed to deeply unsettle Malleus and you were confused as to who this person was. You recognized the name as the Greek God of death, but you had no idea who he was in the context of Twisted Wonderland. Apparently he knew Ortho, but that didn't tell you much as you really hadn't gotten a chance to learn the history of the young Shinigami yet.
"Who?"
"The eldest living thing in Twisted Wonderland, Hades is a Shinigami and is known as the King of The Underworld."
"Why is he the one to be worried about?"
"He is- for all intents and purposes- one of the strongest Mages to walk this earth, even stronger than Malleus. He was very fond of Humans when they still lived in Twisted Wonderland. You could say he is the patron of Humans and sought to protect them in his home on the hidden Isle of Woe."
"Then it's my job to convince him to let me stay here."
"What do you mean?"
"If he cared about Humans that much, then he knows food, drink, and shelter are not the only things a Human needs. Happiness, comfort, and companionship are all things that a Human needs to thrive and feel fulfilled. Our base needs can be met, sure, but that doesn't mean we can survive with just that."
"He is not one to change his mind easily... But he may listen to you if it comes to it. My understanding is that he was never an owner of Humans, just a protector or a shepherd. But he has been without his flock for a long time, his heart may have been changed by the death of his Humans. I'd rather you not be taken away, but even I cannot stand against Hades should he decide you don't belong here."
It was then Divus hushed both you and Crowley, finishing rewrapping your leg and returning the blankets over you.
"Enough of that now. You still need rest and I will kick everyone else out to make sure you get that rest."
"... But I'm hungry."
~•§•~
Silver refused to let you walk anywhere by yourself. The Reindeer was adamant about carrying you wherever you needed to go, even foregoing his own classes to take you around the school. Only a day had passed and clearly everyone was already very aware of your injury and of the impending arrival of one of the Great Seven on campus.
Divus cleared you to go back to your dorm after checking over your leg and making you stay in bed until he was certain you were alright to leave the infirmary. Your professors keenly checking in with you as did several Housewardens throughout the day to ensure you were alright. It was made more than obvious that you and Grim were exempt from homework assigned in class. Truly, your only job at that moment was to stay safe and stay guarded.
Idia was texting your phone almost constantly to keep you up to date on what he and Ortho did to your dorm in order to increase security measures. Apparently he was upset with Ortho for telling Hades about the most recent event and the young boy was equally upset with himself. Neither of them wanted you taken away and were trying to fix any potential threats that could impact you in your dorm. You vaguely wondered if Idia and Ortho often skipped out of classes, as you were almost certain they did have classes to attend, but you didn't think asking was the right move at that moment.
Even as you sat perched atop the back of the Reindeer, you still heard the buzzing of students all murmuring and casting glances at you. Some seemed curious. Some seemed angry. Some didn't seem concerned at all.
"Hey, Human!"
A familiar voice called to you and you smiled when you saw it was Deuce and Ace walking over. Deuce held what looked like a pastry box and Ace carried what seemed to be a small pie. Silver glanced at you as if assessing your reaction to the two Goats as they trotted over with hooves clacking against the floor.
"We heard you were injured the other day, and Ace insisted we to check in-"
"What Deuce is trying to say is we want to make sure you're alright. That and his highness the 'Queen' made Trey do a bunch of baking last night for you," he held up the pie and Deuce held up the box, handing them to Silver as the Reindeer refused to let anything be handed to you directly, "so here. I know your Dragon doesn't like Riddle right now, but it would mean a lot to him and the rest of Heartslabyul if you stopped by to say hello. Also, Cater feels awful and can't bring himself to face you. I mean, it is his fault everyone knows you're here and his follower count didn't stay up for long even after all that, but he still feels bad about it, at least."
"Ace, you- sometimes I wonder about you. But he is right, (Y/n). Riddle has been trotting up and down the halls anxiously and asking all of us in Heartslabyul for updates on you. He is determined to not upset Malleus, but he is driving himself and us crazy. Could you visit him sometime today or tomorrow?"
You nodded, figuring several of the Housewardens wanted a word with you as they were technically in charge of your wellbeing. Riddle had been good about not approaching you unless Trey or another Housewarden was with him after his Overblot. Malleus must have put the fear of the Gods into the Unicorn and you knew Riddle had a specific soft spot for you.
"Sure. I mean, I'll have to ask Silver to take me there, seeing as Divus doesn't want me walking around yet, but I can stop by for a chat."
"When are you joining us at lunch again, Human? We don't get half as much students staring at us when you aren't around."
"Well," you laughed softly at Ace's rather flippant comment, "maybe when my leg is better."
Ace's smile somewhat dropped at your less than enthusiastic response, a kind of worried grimace pulling at his features. He didn't know the full details of your injury but he did know well enough that whatever took place rattled you. Typically in classes and in conversations you were affable, able to snap back at his teasing with remarks of your own. Now your energy was obviously muted and toned down.
"But seriously, (Y/n), are you alright? I mean, really alright."
"I..."
You trailed off and looked away from the worried red eyes of the Satyr, not fully knowing how to respond. It really hadn't sunken in what had happened and you had found yourself jumping and startling at shadows even in the school. Maybe you weren't alright. Still, it didn't seem like a kind of worry to put onto Ace and seemed more a worry to bring up to Malleus or even professor Divus who seemed keen to make you his daughter.
"No. I'm not alright. I won't be for a while, but I'm trying to be. Don't worry about it, Ace. This is just... something I have to deal with."
Grim frowned at your sad tone and looked up at you from where he sat nestled in your arms. His little paws reached up to your face and wry smile pulled at the corners of your lips. Even if all else had been taken away from you when you woke up in this insane world, at least you had Grim.
"If there's something I can do to help, or even if you need someone to talk to, you can always come to Heartslabyul."
"Thank you, Ace."
"Don't get all sappy on me. I'm just saying, not everyone is out to get you."
His words somewhat comforted you and you felt a little more at peace. It was this moment of relaxation that a hauntingly familiar sound met your ears, that heavy panting of the Wolves filling your head. Walking by with his head down and an almost permanent scowl on his muzzle was what looked to be a student, but all you saw was a Wolf. Snowy fluffed out fur and wild golden eyes flicking around to each passing student until his eyes flicked to you and absolute fear griped your chest.
"Silver, we need to go."
"(Y/n), what's wrong? Why-?"
"Please, Silver!"
The Cervitaur didn't need any more encouragement to begin trotting away from where you had been talking to the two Goats, both looking around confused as to what it was that upset you so much. You just held Grim close and shuffled closer to Silver's back, trying to stay calm and not overreact but something made your heart seize when that Wolf looked at you. The wound was too fresh and you hadn't yet come to terms with everything you endured.
As you made it into the courtyard and past several apple trees, you felt your heart slowing back down to a manageable pace. Grim looked up at you with concern but you tried not to focus on the rising panic you had felt.
"Your heart is beating wildly. What happened? Do I need to contact Father?"
"No. No, I- I just got spooked, it's fine-"
"No, it isn't. Keeping your feelings in isn't going to do anything but hurt you. You are precious to me, and I know Father feels the same. We all do. You are part of the Hoard and we value you quite a bit. What happened?"
"I saw a Wolf. Like the ones that... that attacked us. I think he was just a student, but- but I just wanted to get away. I'm a terrible person, he didn't do anything wrong-!"
"I don't think we're going to the rest of your classes today."
Silver turned and began trotting down the halls, his hand resting idly on his sword at his hip. His other hand taped away at his phone before pocketing it. You tried to see what he was doing but he was too quick as he followed some unknown path. The unfamiliar surroundings turned familiar as you realized you were going to the Hall of Mirrors.
"Silver, where are we going?"
"To Diasomnia. To our Lord Malleus' nest. It comforts my Lord to have his Hoard with him in his nest and he has been on edge since your injury. However, something tells me you need the comfort more than he does right now. Sebek tells me I'm not very good at comforting others, but I will try for your sake. You are wounded and a group of beasts threatened you with awful things. They hurt you and you are still hurt. I'm pretty sure that student is a first-year and he is in Savanaclaw. He couldn't have been one of the ones to attack you because the dorm was put on lockdown when- well, when we thought Leona had attacked you."
"What? Why would he attack me? He saved me!"
"We didn't know that at the time. All we knew was that you had been given permission to go into nearby forests to forage with a Vice-Housewarden and to remain nearby in the event your collar triggered. When it went off, we hurried to the forests but we only found your collars, blood, and Leona's dorm emblem. It must have fallen from him when he arrived to help you, drawn in by your collar alerting him. There were too many scents in the forest to figure out the presence of anything except Leona and a lot of your blood."
"But that isn't what happened! They grabbed me when Jade went into the underwater caves- Jade! Is Jade okay? Please tell me they didn't hurt him!"
"Octavinelle's Vice-Houswarden is fine. He is upset with himself that you were left unguarded, but you heard Professor Divus, they would have killed him if they found him. They would have overwhelmed anyone quickly and mercilessly, but they didn't anticipate Lord Malleus and they lost miserably. If it makes you feel better, he made sure that none of them can ever try to hurt you again."
"... What?"
~•§•~
"Malleus, we are needed."
"Whatever it is can wait, Lilia. I will not let my guard down and let anyone enter these grounds to take my Hoard from me."
"That is who needs you right now."
The Dragon paused his vigil, glancing over at his teacher and trusted advisor who balanced on one of the lower castle spires across from him. He had been up there since his treasured Human left her sick-bed that morning to attend classes. Though he had been against it, he still used his magic to help freshen her up as she wanted to at least try and go to class. Anything for his little Human, but even now that freedom stressed him. The simple idea that someone could come and take her away was poisonous and made his chest hurt.
"Where?"
"Silver is taking her to your nest."
"In her excuse of a dorm?"
"In Diasomnia."
"Has Sebek been informed?"
"He is there already."
"Let us not keep them waiting."
"My thoughts exactly."
As the two traveled inside from where they had been perched, Lilia almost seemed to have a bounce in his step. Malleus raised a brow at the almost happy behavior being displayed by the Bat Fae who simply smiled in return.
"You seem quite pleased despite knowing my child of man is upset."
"I'm pleased she is coming to Diasomnia and has learned we are safe enough for her to go to when she is uncertain or unwell."
"I would have thought you to be upset with the... interest I have taken in her."
"Now why would I be upset?"
"She is short lived and fragile."
"You can fix that first problem, the second one can be handled by your Hoard and yourself quite easily."
"Against everyone but Hades and Grandmother."
"Yes, but something tells me she will not let herself be taken away without a fight. She is quite fond of you and of the rest of the Hoard. Myself included. We are your Hoard, and she is a treasure we all share great affection for. I have seen the way you hold her in the nest and in your mind."
"Can you truly blame me? She is warm and so wonderfully fragile. She fits well in my grasp and her softness is not easily replicated."
"If I blamed you, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. Just remember, Humans pack bond closely with those they trust. We must remain trustworthy and protect Grim as we protect her. He is her's, after all."
"I can't lose her..."
"And we won't."
~•§•~
The halls of Diasomnia seemed so much grander the third time through, especially in comparison to Ramshackle. Of course, your first and second time through the halls- while conscious- were on the same blur of a night when you fell into this world. Such a short time ago relatively speaking but to you it felt like ages. How much had you actually gone through in those days? How much had you endured?
These thoughts weighed heavily in your mind as Silver came to a stop in front of a door that swung open before he could knock. As he slowly walked in, you recognized it as Malleus' room and the same one you woke in after you passed out beneath a gargoyle. The nest was larger here than the one in your dorm by quite a bit and you vaguely wondered if the room was originally so large or if it had been changed for Malleus.
Much as you wanted to fully take in the size of the nest, it was the primary occupant of that nest that drew your gaze. Curled up almost like a large cat was not Malleus as you knew him. Laying there was a dark as midnight dragon you had only known in Humanoid form.
His eyes were a burning green that smouldered in his sockets, scales blacker than the abyssal depths of the ocean. The faintest purple sheen seemed to catch on the large wings of the intimidating beast even as they lay folded at his sides. Twin horns spiraled up from the crown of the great beast's skull as he let out a low rumbling noise akin to a purr.
In the space of his legs near the Dragon's side was what seemed to Lilia and Sebek, already tucked into blankets. There seemed to be plenty of room and it was clear that was where you and Silver were headed. Magic swirled around you and you found you were no longer in your uniform, but comfortable clothes that almost seemed suited for sleep. Before the Cervitaur could climb up into the nest or help you up, a long tail carefully wound around you, lifting you and Grim up and into the nest safely. Silver was placed in the nest in a similar fashion not long after, likely having set down the treats Trey made for you prior to Malleus bringing him into the nest.
Lilia moved over to your side and pulled up blankets around you and Grim. While the five of you settled down, the Dragon curved his long neck to lay his large head alongside your body. It seemed Malleus was keen to be as close to you as he could while also being a living nest. You figured it was because you were injured.
Despite how intimidating it was to be right next to an actual Dragon in the flesh, you felt oddly at peace. Perhaps that magic did more than change your clothes. Grim also seemed quite relaxed, crawling from your arms to cuddle down into his own blanket on top of Silver.
As you relaxed into the blankets you adjusted with a slight wince, holding your leg and trying to get it somewhat comfortable.
"Does it hurt, child of man?"
The deep voice of the Dragon was almost soft as if spoken in your mind and not out loud. His large green eye watching you intently as you straightened out your leg and turned on your side to face him.
"Yes. It hurts..."
The maw of the great beast opened ever so slightly and an incredibly comfortable warmth spread from his lungs. Almost seeming to toast the blankets around you and the heat felt rather nice on your leg. Something about the warmth almost numbed the throbbing pain and set you at ease, soothed by the magic of the Dragon that held you in such high regard.
"Lilia tells me a student frightened you?"
"I don't think he meant to. He just... He looked like those Wolves... The ones that- that attacked Grim and I. I feel terrible for being so afraid of him, but..."
Your hand came up to rest over the small cut from where your collar had been removed from your body. The bandage was rough compared to your skin and the simple feel made tears start to well up in your eyes.
Maybe you were fragile. Maybe these monster men were just built differently, and that's why Humans had been killed off so early. Maybe this world was just far too dangerous for a Human like yourself.
As the tears began to fall, the large Dragon head scooted closer, pressing up against your front and letting you hold to his face. Lilia was quick to wrap his wings around your back, pressing his forehead into your shoulder. The combination of affection and frustration at the feeling of uselessness was enough to make your tears flow quickly down your face. Everything seeming to rush at you all at once.
Both Dragon and Bat were content to simply be there as you cried against them. Perhaps Silver was right and you needed this more than they did.
~•§•~
Crowley frowned as he looked out at the campus from his office window. Hades would arrive soon and the Crow was not ready to face the ancient Shinigami again. This time there was even more on the line as this Human had made herself rather precious to those on the campus. Even the students that didn't speak to her had begun to enjoy her presence in classes and speak highly of her when out of earshot.
The worst part for Crowley was he didn't know if it would be worse for the students or worse for the Human to be uprooted yet again and taken away. He hoped that the Human would be able to talk some sense into the old Shinigami, despite everything that had happened. Maybe once the Shinigami saw how much the others loved this soft Human and sought to protect her, he would allow her to stay where she was comfortable.
Crowley knew the Isle of Woe was likely much safer for the Human, and the Shinigami missed the soft species rather fiercely. Still, despite knowing it would ultimately be better for her, Crowley didn't want to let this Human go. He didn't want to have to give up the crown jewel of his collection. After all, the Human artifacts he collected since he was a fluffy-downy nestling were one thing, the actual Human was on another level entirely.
"Dire Crowley. We truly do need to stop meeting this way."
"I wondered when you would arrive, Lord Hades."
*Xylo's mother stands clutching the Night Raven College admission letter, her gaze fixed on the roof.*
Xylo's mother: Dear, you've been accepted to Night Raven College. Congratulations.
Xylo: *sits up, looking at her* I don't remember applying for that.
Their mother: I know, but it would be a great opportunity for you so I did.
Xylo: *uninterested* Ah, you want me to become a scholar.
Their mother: You're smart and responsible. You just lack the opportunity.
Xylo: Huh, really? Wasn't that because your husband refused to support me?
Xylo: And treated me like I wasn't his child?
Their mother: Xylo, your father is dead... Haven't you still forgiven him?
Xylo: Short answer: No.
Their mother: *sigh* Anyway, come down here so we can celebrate.
Their mother: *smiles* I bought you a strawberry cake.
Xylo: ...
Xylo's younger sibling: If Xylo goes to college, who's going to hunt food for us?
Their mother: Aren't you old enough to do that?
The younger sibling: *pouts* My playmates would tease me if they see me running around like a moron.
Xylo: Just say you're useless.
The younger sibling: HUH?! I'M NOT USELESS!
Xylo: A beastman who doesn't know how to bring food to the table is useless.
Xylo: You might as well just starve.
Their mother: Xylo, that's enough.
The younger sibling: Hmph! You only got accepted to Night Raven College because of mom. If I were a bit older, I could get in too.
Xylo: Sure, with your impressive grades.
The younger sibling: Mom! Xylo's teasing me!
Their mother: *sigh*
Crowley and the students: ...
Idia: ...Eh? *made eye contact with Xylo just a moment ago and now they're sleeping on him*
Crowley: ...
Crowley: *checks their student profile* Oh!
Crowley: *smiles* Xylo is a feline beastmarked.
Kalim: Does that mean they chose Idia as their human?
Idia: M-Me?
Leona: Good for you, but they're part of my dorm so— *yanks them away from Idia*
Xylo: *woke up then snarls at him* *sees that it's Leona*
Xylo: ...
Xylo: I think I know you from somewhere.
Leona: I'm your prince.
Xylo: ...
Xylo: Prince who?
Leona: Leona Kingscholar.
Xylo: Haven't heard of that name before.
Leona: *frowns*
Idia: Um, Leona? You can give them to me if you don't want to handle them—
Leona: No.
Idia: ...
Hey ! I wanted to request a Ignihyde!Male!Reader that look like a little like Grim ? Like, they have the same ears and tail, the same fire (even if the reader controls his fire better than Grim) and people think they are from the same family/are connect ?
Just Grim and Reader looking at each other and asking to themselves if they have just meet their secret brother, and Ace, Deuce, Ortho, Idia and parental figure!Trein being confused to their friend (Grim for Adeuce, Reader for Ortho and Idia) having (a possible) brother.
(Ignore it if you don't want to write it)
Have a good day.
characters: ace, deuce, the shroud brothers and trein x male ignihyde reader
tags: platonic, fluff, imagines + scenario format; implication of yuu, mention of azul
warnings: nothing
author's notes: sorry this took a while! and that i strayed a bit again help. hope you like this <3
Tumblr media
You’re one of the only beastmen in Ignihyde - and you’re okay with that. It gets a little lonely at times but that’s nothing new for an Ignihyde student. People mind their own business, you mind yours. And the only friends you have, in this case the Shroud brothers, basically forget that you’re different from the others. Days are hardly interesting, despite the college’s many atrocities - or maybe because, and now you’re desensitized.
Until one day, you spot a creature, all feline-like and sitting on someone’s shoulder. Okay, not the weirdest thing you’ve seen at NRC so far, so you’re about to shrug it off. Then you see it; a tail and a pair of ears that are eerily similar to your own. What’s next, it can manipulate fire as freely as you do?
“Hey guys, I’ve got a new trick up my sleeve. Watch this!”
One thing you didn’t expect for it to have something in common with you is that it can talk. Though maybe you should be less surprised, considering even the paintings on the walls can talk in this place. But still. You forget that you should be expecting something from the words it just spouted and are caught off guard when it starts spewing fire next. This creature is way too talented at throwing out stuff from its mouth, you think as you jump out of the way just in time to avoid being burnt to a crisp.
“Grim, you can’t just spit fire whenever you want to! We’ve been over this!”
A redheaded student in front of you starts to scold the creature whose name is Grim apparently. He looks familiar but you can’t quite put your finger on it-
“You’re just jealous, Ace.”
Oh, you feel like Idia’s talked about this Ace person before. He described him as “crafty” and seemed to think of him as some sneaky extrovert but you’ve learnt to not put much faith in Idia’s descriptions of other people. No offense to your friend but at least he’s somewhat self-aware of how anxious he gets around others.
“I definitely am not??? This is the same thing that almost got us expelled, you know!”
You feel like you may also have heard of a group of first years almost getting expelled until they somehow got their hands on a magestone the headmage told them to get, as if you can just swing by a store and buy one. You know how hopeless Headmage Crowley and dumping a lot of work on a bunch of freshmen is in character but you can't help but feel disappointed anyway.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this but I agree. You really have to learn how to keep your pride in check…”
Another student, blue-haired and you assume is Ace’s friend, chimes in on the scolding. The student whose shoulder Grim has made himself at home only shook their head, most likely accustomed to his behavior. You watch them bicker as you ruminate on the resemblance of that strange creature to you.
After a few minutes of thinking (and walking so that you don't lose them), you decide that the fact that you were almost a victim of Grim’s flames is strong enough of an excuse to allow you to approach the friend group.
“Hey. You four.”
They turn around to notice you finally (though you can hardly blame them – save for Idia and his glow-in-the-dark-esque hair, Ignihyde students are not noticed as much). It takes them a second to realize that you're no ordinary student. When they do, their jaws fall open, letting out a wild “Huh?!”.
Grim himself jumps off the quiet student's shoulder and stands on his two feet. The day is getting crazier and crazier the longer you entertain this coincidence. He then points at you and begins his bullshit-spewing again.
“W-Who are you?! And why do you look like me?!”
You should be asking the same questions right now but the lack of answers for them makes any word on the tip of your tongue die before they can escape. Plus, the way he's saying his words sound more accusatory than you’d like to admit.
“Don’t look at me! I'm just like this!”
Grim doesn't seem satisfied by your answer and honestly, you can't blame him. You both are quite confused by what's happening at the moment. You two resort to unconsciously recreating the two-Spidermen-pointing-at-each-other meme. The other three students also seem to be at a loss from what they're witnessing.
Ace Trappola
He would laugh at Grim and point out how he's not special anymore but he's too stunned to even say anything (at least for now)
He looks you up and down again then pinches himself to make sure he’s not hallucinating
He feels like he should be less surprised and that the uncanny resemblance could just be passed off as a coincidence but he has to admit, seeing you two as not brothers may prove to be a little difficult for him
He gets used to you two over time and stops questioning it altogether. Sometimes he even forgets
At times, he’d poke fun at Grim and say how you two are way too different personality-wise to even be correlated in some way
But deep down, he’s happy for Grim he found someone similar to him
He won’t say that aloud obviously.
Deuce Spade
His eyes dart from you to Grim then you again. This goes on for a minute
He almost asks you if you can also breathe fire so recklessly
He ends up interrogating you, like a parent doing a background check on the friend you just brought home
Sooner or later, he concludes that you two are “bros”, despite not having the same feline characteristics
He’s glad Grim found his long-lost brother (he gets a smack from Grim for this)
He would notice how Grim’s smiles oftentimes are wider when you’re around, probably feeling some kind of kinship with you
And he gets that - since you all are “bros” now, he’s more than willing to have your backs now
After sorting things out with the freshmen, you return to your cave like the nerd that you are, feeling more exhausted than usual. To your surprise, you also return to two nerds being in said cave. A Shroud brothers ambush is not something that happens too often.
“Hey (Y/N). We decided that your place needs trashing. Also Ortho wants to try out this new game he found but it needs at least three players.”
Sounds about right. The geeks are geeking out as usual, just at your place this time. But you need them to hear about how crazy today was. You open your mouth to say something-
“I tried to convince him to get Azul but you know how stubborn my brother is.”
Ortho cuts you off and you force a nervous chuckle as a response. You agree but you should really get this off your chest-
“Hm? Did you guys hear something~?”
Idia teases and it brings a genuine laugh out of you and Ortho. Then you take a deep breath and release it. Third time’s the charm, right? You try again.
“Listen, you two. You wouldn’t believe what happened today.”
They perk right up at the promise of gossip (specifically, gossip related to you). You jump a bit from the excitement, finally glad you got their attention. Your hands start to gesture while you tell today’s story.
“I found this… cat. His name is Grim? He has the exact same ears and tail that I do! And he can breathe fire too! Except he does it with no regards to his surroundings whatsoever. That’s kinda concerning.”
Idia Shroud
“You saw wittle Gwimmy??? Man, I’m so jealous… I’ve been in need of some cat therapy for a while now…”
By the sound of it, he already knows who he is. You gasp dramatically at this, feeling betrayed at the fact he never told you about him
He tells you to chill and simply excuse that he didn’t think it was that important or anything
Of course, at first he was shocked but then he pondered about the coincidence - concluded that weirder things have happened and can happen
You’re unamused by this but it is very Idia. You suppose if you have a curse where it burns blot in your body nothing can really be seen as weird
Still, he entertains the possibility of you having a non-human distant cousin
If he isn’t already so nerdy, it feels like he’s growing a second brain trying to theorize what your relation to Grim is…
Ortho Shroud
Also already knows who he is. This truly is a Shroud brothers ambush… of betrayal at that
Theatrics aside, you try to pry him for further information and maybe explain how you and Grim may be related
“Sorry (Y/N), I’d love to help but Grim has been avoiding both of us for a while now. Whether that’s intentional or not, I’m not sure, but I sure wish I was with you when you ran into him. I’m sure I could’ve gotten some valuable information from him!”
You have your doubts about that.
While you keep things to yourself, Ortho provides you with Grim’s surface level information - which is basically nothing
So you two vow to get closer to Grim; even with the ulterior motive, it doesn’t hurt to have more friends Idia would beg to differ
Grim-like traits aside, it’ll be eye-opening to him to see if you two are similar in any regard at all - whether it be from your healing presence to your dazzling smile.
The next morning, you walk to your first class of the day: History of Magic. A fairly interesting class regardless of your stance on the subject. Professor Trein goes on and on about something, you write things down in your notebook. Your eyes are on Lucius for half of the class too. Your mind is still stuck on the events of yesterday. You feel like you’d be reminded of Grim any time you lay your eyes on anything feline - including yourself.
At last, class is dismissed. As much as you enjoy the class and genuinely like Professor Trein, you can’t help but feel that classes are dragged out way too much in this college. You pack up your things and you leave around the same time the professor does. So when Grim comes running and tackles you to the hallway floor, he’s there to witness it all.
“Hey twin! Wanna have lunch with us later? You’ll be seating with us cool kids!”
As you try to regain your composure over being literally knocked over and the fact that Grim has already warmed up to you, Professor Trein attempts to comprehend the scene unfolding before him.
Mozus Trein
Yes, of course he needs to scold Grim over misbehaving for the umpteenth time that week, but he’s also in awe of how… similar you and Grim look.
If he’s seen either of you before, whether in vicinity of each other or not, he’s never noticed blame it on the old grandpa eyes
People (and creatures now too, accounting for Grim’s being here) of your traits and abilities are far and few between
As much as he’d like to inquire you two on your ancestries (and their possible connection), he does respect your privacy
He always liked having you in his class but now, he finds himself looking out for you more often, a way to put his energy from his curiosity about you into something else
He’d ask you about your day and jokingly ask how your relationship with your long-lost brother is doing as if he’s not acting like a dad himself
Needless to say, he’s definitely your favorite teacher now.
You accept Grim’s offer for whatever reason and have lunch with the “cool kids”. You feel a little out of place at first, hanging out with people who aren’t the Shrouds, but then you start having lunch with them every other day. Then you start visiting Ramshackle Dorm where Grim is staying and spend time with the others there. At some point, you brought the Shrouds along and they would bring their games.
Suddenly, you know a lot of people. You think to yourself how crazy friendships start. You go from not knowing their name to knowing what they named their pet rock when they were a child. And in Grim’s case, you went from pointing at each other confusingly to pointing at each other for stealing each other’s food.
For the record, he definitely stole your pudding first.
pink in the night.
malleus x gender neutral! reader 1k words cross posted on ao3 "At one point, Malleus believed he woke up to see the night sky. But now he was convinced he woke up to see you."
 Malleus believes he wakes up to see the stars.
The night sky was truly a gift from Mother Nature herself. She throws a blanket of darkness over the scenery of Night Raven College, with speckles of starlight peeking through, almost like a homemade, crocheted quilt. She tucks in her children with chaste kisses of the night breeze and leaves a little moonlight to ease their fears of the unknown. It was a tranquil showcase of her love for the world and Malleus couldn’t help but mischievously sneak out of bed to see the beauty in her work.
"Ever the poet," Lilia would always remark. Malleus never really agreed. The poetry wrote itself; he only verbalized what he saw. He wasn’t the creative type, he decided. It wasn’t that he sought and found beauty in unconventional places, like a certain Pomefiore Vice Houswarden, it’s only that he recognized what was clearly in front of him. Although, the presence of the Ramshackle Prefect made him consider singing sonnets from the rooftops.
You had been a surprise for him on his nightly walks. He had come to expect the usual landmarks on campus, broken up by the occasional scurrying creature. But you- you were something completely unexpected. A new student, naively curious. Kind, warm, fearless. You were ignorant of who he was; being from another world (how lucky for him!) left him with endless possibilities. With you, he was no longer Malleus Draconia, the crown prince of Briar Valley, and one of the most powerful mages in the world. He was-
“Tsunotarou! Or Hornton. Your choice… never mind, I’ll just use both.”
Malleus replayed that night over and over. How could he not? This was it. A friend. He wasn’t being presumptuous, it was you who gave him a nickname (not that you had a choice of course, but you gave him two) you who joined him on his walks, you who listened to his rambles, you, you. Clearly, you wanted to befriend him. Who else would be this forward?
At one point, Malleus believed he woke up to see the night sky. But now he was convinced he woke up to see you.
This was the conclusion he came to after tonight’s walk with you. You led the conversation this time. You spoke about the adventures you were dragged into; your frustrations with your feline companion and Headmaster Crowley; and how much you enjoyed the night walks with him.
Wait, what?
“Tsunotarou? Hello?” You dragged out the “o” in an endearingly casual manner, stepping in front of him as you tried to ground him back into the moment.
“You in there? Were you listening to me?” You teased, crossing your arms and smiling. You tilted your head to the side as you tried to read his face. He felt entirely exposed; like you could hear his beating heart and see how enamored he was by you. You, however, wished he’d give you a clue about how he was feeling.
“Of course I was, Child of Man,” He responded calmly. He hoped his butterfly-filled stomach didn’t betray his voice. Your favorite part of the day was the walks with him. He’d never been so ecstatic. “I always listen to you,”
You don’t say anything. You continue smiling and narrow your eyes, still looking for something else. Your expression mirrors one Lilia would use before he scolded him. Were you truly mad at him? He could (and would, if you asked) recall everything you said in the past half hour. He would prove that he was listening, deserving of your presence, a good friend- more if you let him. Malleus would literally move mountains if you asked.
“Hey! You’re doing it again, Hornton. Get out of your head.”
Your touch is electrifying. It almost burns. He hears you exclaim about “how cold” his skin is, but only vaguely. What he did notice, was how your hand was holding his face. A concerned look replaced your teasing smile as you studied him. You mumbled again about how cold he was, and pressed your other hand to his forehead, brushing under his bangs.
“If you were sick, why did you walk over here? Now you’ve made it worse!” You scolded, bringing him closer to your height as you gently rubbed his cheeks, attempting to warm him up. “At this rate, you’ll freeze. I mean seriously, you’re as cold as ice!”
Malleus had half a mind to tell you that he was completely fine. He wasn’t sick at all, fae just ran a bit cold. Colder than what a human could stand. Yet he decided to entertain your doting, smiling slightly.
“I apologize, Child of Man. I didn’t want to ruin your favorite part of the day. Do forgive me,” It was his turn to tease. Just a little. It wouldn’t hurt to indulge in your attention. You click your tongue, before releasing his head and declaring the walk “over”. Pity. He was hoping you’d hold him for a bit longer. He usually wasn’t very tolerant of the heat, but he was happy to withstand it if it meant you held him longer.
“C’mon Tsunotarou,” You announce, walking back in the direction you came. “We gotta go back to my dorm. I’ll wrap you in a blanket burrito and feed you some tuna soup…” you cringe. “It tastes better than it sounds, promise.” You clarify, before decisively grabbing his hand and gently tugging him forward.
He listens to you explain different ways you’ve learned to transform canned tuna because of Grim, to varying success. You once again reassure him that the soup is one of the better creations, before continuing your rant about “missing regular meat,” and “tuna isn’t even the best fish!” but at this point, Malleus can only focus on the warm grip of your hand on his and the constant hammering of his heart.
Oh, the poems he’d write about you. They’d feature tales of fish and ice, comparisons to the peace of the night, and love letters from the starry sky. But really, he wouldn’t be doing much work. He only verbalized the beauty he saw, after all.
Hellooo I really like your writing :) May I request taking Malleus/Leona's favorite food from the fridge and leaving $2.18 in place of it?? How would they react when they find out their fav is missing?? Thank you so much !
ㅤas a form of payment
note. ty 🥲 I really appreciate since I basically disappeared for months LOL
Tumblr media
in your defense, there's barely anything to snack on inside your dorm—unless you somehow enjoyed the myriad of canned cat food for grim (which you've been spending a lot on compared to your actual food..) and if there were anything to eat at all, you'd reckon the feline would've already gotten his hands on it and kept it to himself.
when you're already on a strict budget plan with the madol crowley 'graciously' provides you, barely enough to scrape by. you'd argue; but with the squawks of the blabbering he has, it's like arguing a wall.
thankfully lilia doesn't even seem to mind when you raid their fridge everytime you sleep over.
the dorm was really nice. nicer than your own, besides the fact sebek practically guards the front door with his life and demanding a formal invite from you the moment your knuckles resound against the door. though ramshackle, and diasomnia held similar vibes. the former looked younger than the latter but definitely in less good shape.
it was too enticing.. you shouldn't overstep as a guest.
but... "it's mocking me," you say to no one but yourself in particular. seated on a stool you found on the kitchen, in front of a counter and in the sights of the fridge. the green eccentrics of material drives your eyes to narrow further, a long, wistful sigh emitted from your lips as your folded hands rest beneath your chin.
not only that but it served like a warning to you, the color reminded you of sebek and his yelling habits. it would be a shame if you were discovered shredding their fridge with your gaze with the screech you'd imagine he'd make.
then something along the lines of; 'what are you planning, human?!'
surprisingly the dorm was eerily quiet during the night. they follow a strict protocol which only serves as fuel for your fire. you grumble. "I'm just a guest," you remind yourself. maybe to steel your morals but your resolve proves to reign when you quietly slip off the stool and open the freezer, eyes skimming through the frozen goods—a bar of chocolate, a frozen... eye...? whatever demon hotdogs were and—finally something normal.
you groan to yourself, feeling around your back pocket before peeling out a couple of coins that would be the equivalent of a dollar or two in your world. (also the last of your riches but atleast you partially paid?)
you look back, nervously looking around like a criminal before hauling the tub of ice cream in your arms. the rumble of your abdomen reminds you of why exactly you're even here committing a crime (or atleast it feels like you are...) you quickly grab a spoon, and tail it to the.. random ominous door you've never been to in your life.
malleus has this strange feeling.
he sums it up to hunger so he ventures down the familiar stairs of his dorm, through the living room, and to the place that will supposedly solve all of his problems. the churn in his gut grows stronger when he steps foot in the kitchen, blinking slowly when he cranes his head and finds the light illuminating and bright. when it shouldn't be.
it must be a resident that forgot. he shrugs it off, trudging over. picking up the smell of something familiar that brings warmth to his chest so his lips twitch into a pleasant smile. he must be going crazy, even now you're on his mind? "hmm," he mumbles, having opened the freezer and not spotting the familiar tub he's put earlier this morning.
sebek did say what it looked like, but none of these are even the delicacy he desires. he thinks, placing down a small cup of yogurt that could only belong to his father. maybe he put it in the refrigerator?
he sighs sharply through his nose and grumbles (coincidentally the same time a lightning strikes.) shutting the door to the refrigerator after finding nothing but a few eggs, chips from random residents, and more random thing that hss no correlation to what he wants. even if sebek did put it down there then what's the point in eating if it's not frozen?
malleus turns, about to sulk back to his room when he catches sight of a sticky notes and.. some madol?
'hi, this is for whoever ice cream that was T-T'
he crumples the paper in his grasp, wanting to seem understanding but the flash of lightning once again serves as a remainder of his growing irritation. a brightening of his eyes comes as quick as the tracking spell he casts quickly. eyes following a trail to the.. inconspicuous closet.
"oh, hi." the sudden light flooding in as you crouch on the floor, tub of desert between your crossed legs brings a hand over your eyes. unknown legs stand in front of the.. whatever room this is, but a closet seems more fitting so you'd call it that.
"child of man?" an incredulous voice echoes above you. the familiar sound illicits you to remove the hand blocking your sight, you wouldn't want to not look at malleus. you blink, fingers grasping the spoon laid forgotten inside the tub as you stare up at him and offer a nervous smile.
you wave with your free hand. "I got hungry?" you justify but that's only when he looks down at what you're glomping on and blinks, the random thunderstorm that started out of nowhere seems to pause for a few seconds before he breaks into a light chuckle and shakes his head. crouching down in front of you.
he presents you a small smirk. "I believe what you're eating is mine," he chides gently, devoid of any ill intent and previous irritation evaporating into nothingness when he finds you as the source of his troubles just a second ago. you open your mouth to reply, probably looking like an idiot with your mouth hung open, frozen when he just casually swipes a thumb on the corner of your mouth. wiping off an excess of ice cream that you didn't notice.
the notion might as well just given you a heart attack with the skip of a beat it did. it's almost as if malleus knows what's he's doing with the awfully appealing smirk on his face, still so gentle but you'd know better that he's doing it out of goodwill and natural caring nature for you. just the thought that he actually is so perfect warms your face.
you open your mouth—furrow your brows, close, and open. "I.. um... I'm sorry I know the money wasn't enough but I was really hungry, I'll get you a new one," a sincere apology, if you'd known it was his you would've never taken it in the first place. with the kindness he's extended you for so many times, you'd hate to see a frown on his face.
he huffs through his nose, a patient look of understanding on his face. "what's mine is all yours," he gestures to the tub between your legs, a reassuring hand on shoulder as he rubs his thumb around. he's close enough for you to see the light in his eyes, the green, and your reflection in the iris. you stare, a little dazed and mesmerized and he stares back.
"something as material as that doesn't matter compared to you," he adds.
oh my god. you gape. suddenly you're not so regretful of committing this crime.
his eyes drift up for a moment, pondering. standing back up to his full height and offering you a hand. "if you really want to make it up to me then why don't we eat it together?"
when you grasp his hand, his fingers enclose around yours. pulling you up with utmost caution. treating you as if you're the most fragile jewel he's ever held but holding you with a grip so firm you're almost afraid he's just never gonna never let go of you. you eye him as he leads you to the living room, having taken the stance as a gentleman and taking out the tub out of your hands.
even with the lasting cold from the tub transferring to your skin you still feel warm, something of a tranquil and quiet silence comfortable falling over as you both settle on the couch. you're surprised he doesn't take the seat on the opposite of you as he's always has, this time next to you. not minding your knees bumping against each other as he scoops a spoonful and offers it to you.
... how did you get in this predicament? you wonder, but open your mouth and allow yourself to shift a little closer.
𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲
it has been almost seven months now, and nothing has happened. nothing.
crowley has yet to still find you a way home, dealing with multiple overblots has become far too tiring to deal with, and having to be the one to solve everyone's problem was too much.
where was your help? why hasn't anyone helped you get back home?
sure, the last few months in twisted wonderland have been lots of fun, but you still didn't belong here. you don't belong here.
you just wanted to go back home, even if that meant dealing with the pain of leaving everyone else that you care deeply for.
"Headmage?" you call out to the man, opening the large door into his office. the man was sitting near his desk, seemingly busy with a bunch of paperwork that was scattered on the table.
he'd shift his gaze up away from the papers, a wide grin spreading across his lips as he dropped his pen. "Ah, well if it isn't Ramshackle's Prefect! What may I be of help to you?"
his voice booms loudly, watching as you approach his desk, fiddling with your fingers. "Uhm... I just wanted to know if there was anything that you found... to help me get home?"
with those words alone, crowley's grin faltered slightly, and you already seemed to know what his answer would be.
"A.. Ah! Right, I am... uh, I'm still looking into it of course! Just a little delayed with... uh, well, with all this paperwork. But worry not, I'll find you a way back home soon enough!"
and it's taking you six months?
you would let out a sigh of disappointment. you knew how this would end, but you had hoped with how long had passed that maybe, just maybe, crowley would've found something.
"Well, I still have a lot of work right now, so how about you hurry along now. You wouldn't want Grim causing any trouble now, right?" the man would shoo you away, and you'd find yourself leaving his office soon enough.
"Hah... what a letdown."
"-ease! Please! Just help me find a way back!" you yelled, screaming desperately for the person's assistance.
"Why should I?" their voice was cold, filled with nothing. a void of any emotion as tears welled in your eyes. "Aren't you supposed to be the one helping people? Why would I be doing your job?"
you could only stay silent as tears streamed down your cheeks, staring at the person before you.
"How about you go and kill yourself and see if you'll get home that way."
you immediately sat up, panting heavily as you looked around the room. you'd lean back against the headboard, trying to catch your breath as your gaze shifted over to the side of you to see grim's sleeping form.
"Fuck..." you brought your hands up to cover your face, feeling all the tears coming out again.
you sobbed quietly in your hands, staying as quiet as possible to keep from waking the feline next to you. fuck! fuck! fuck!
"Is there really no way of going back...?" your voice croaked, wiping the tears away as you stared down at the small beast next to you, moving one hand down to pet his small, chubby body.
"It's ok. Crowley will find something soon. I just gotta keep hoping for it."
• In this fic, I won't be specifically referring to the reader as Skarlet or any part of Skarlet's backstory. I'll only be using references of her skillset (Dagger Dance, Cell Siphon, Krimson Shield, etc.) and I'll also leave the reader's backstory as a powerful unknown mage with a forbidden type of magic.
• You have a very unique magic. A magic oh so powerful that everyone feared that it may turn you into a monster. But the thought of manipulating anyone and making them serve you never crossed your mind. You first discovered that you possess such type of magic is when you accidentally bit the inside of your cheek. The blood dripped down from your mouth to the floor. As you cried, the drops of blood levitated in the air, startling you. When the people around you took notice of this, they immediately cast you aside as a villain.
• ... That's okay. It doesn't hurt anymore.
• You didn't know what happened. That's that. You didn't know you blacked out, you didn't know how you got trapped inside a coffin, you didn't know why this... Blue furry thing on fire screaming at you to take off your robe that definitely wasn't there before. You shrugged its hostile behavior towards you since it doesn't sound like it wants to elaborate.
????: "Fnyagh! Just gimme your robe and I won't burn ya to a crisp, got it?!"
• I mean, look at this thing. Judging by its size and aura, it doesn't seem to be strong enough to knock you out, much less overpower you. The flaming feline is not pleased when you casually ignore him and just walk away like nothing happened. So it blew flames at you when you turn from him. You sharply turn to a corner to avoid the flames. You realize that you didn't have your dagger or anything sharp around you, so you ran.
????: "Fnyaaaah! Hey come back here!"
• Hmm, Courtyard... No sharp rocks or sticks, the whole place looks clean. Hmm, Library... Papercuts from papers? No, too small. Shit, a dead end... Should you just bite your fingers or bash your head against the wall? Nah, no time-
Grim: "Fnyahaha! Ya think ya can escape from the Great Grim's nose?! Now, take off your- FNYAGH!"
• You sighed, close your eyes, and just thought of letting him burn your skin off so that you can have access to your blood magic...... Huh, he's silent all of a sudden. You open your eyes to see a man wearing a crow mask and a top hat capturing the cat with a lash. The man scolded you after bickering with the tiny monster. He doesn't seem to pose a threat to you and you won't pose a threat to him.
• Whatever nonsense this man keeps blabbering about, it intrigues you. A college? Solely to train young mages? This loud-ass man is their headmaster? A horse drawn carriage of ebony took you here? As a student? ...Should you be glad that it's not a dungeon? Should you be annoyed and tell him that you're not supposed to be here? Either way, you quiet down and observe the commotion until your explanation is needed.
??????: "Where is the headmage?"
?????: "Maybe he had a stomachache and had to leave?"
Crowley, barging in: "NOT AT ALL!"
????: "Ah, there he is."
?????: "Whatever. Let's get this stupid ceremony over with."
• Crowley pushed in front of a mirror and a face glowed from it.
Dark Mirror: "State thy name."
BloodMage! Yuu: "...."
Crowley: "Psst! Say your real and full name!"
BloodMage! Yuu: "... But it's an object? I'm not sharing my name with an object, I'll look stupid."
Crowley: "Just say your name!"
BloodMage! Yuu: "Fine! It's BloodMage! Yuu..."
Dark Mirror: "BloodMage! Yuu... Thy color and shape of soul is..."
NRC staffs meeting Lucille’s Pokemons
Dire Crowley - Klefki
Tumblr media
“Miss Beaumont please tell your monster to give me back my keys !”
Moves: Astonish, Play Rough, Fairy Lock, Flash Cannon.
It can be said that Klefki is one of the strangest monsters that Crowley has ever encountered in his entire life.
While he expected monsters looking like animals, he never expected one to look like a key-chain.
Klefki, like many Fairy types, is rather mischievous. And like many of Lucille’s Pokemons, he greatly dislikes Crowley for all the bs the man had put his trainer through.
Since Crowley decks himself in keys, Klefki felt obligated to steal from him. And just pike any other Klefkis, this one will not let go of the keys he had stolen from the Headmaster.
One time while Lucile was out cold after a long day of doing Crowley’s tasks, Klefki stole one of her enclosure keys and unlocked the gate to a certain padlock.
Crowley’s screams can be heard all the way from RSA as he was being chased by Kleki, who is leading Tyrantrum right to the masked man.
Divus Crewel - Eevee
Tumblr media
“What an adorable little pup, and to think you can become one in eight different forms when you grow up!”
Moves: Tackle, Swift, Baby-doll Eyes, Quick Attack
It’s no surprise that Crewel is a fashion icon with the most fabulous outfits, but at the end of the day, the man is still a designer, and a lot of times designers have art block.
This is not good for Crewel, so he went outside to get some fresh air, maybe drop by Ramshackle to see if he can came up with any ideas by seeing the Pokemons.
While the man is scrolling through Lucille’s PokeDex, Eevee came over to him and curiously sniffed his pant leg.
Crewel was quite curious of this little fox dog thingie, he had to admit that it was quite adorable. He was well behaved and let the older man pet him as he pleases.
It wasn’t until Lucille told him how Eevee can have 8 different evolutions did Crewel’s interest piqued.
Upon seeing the eight different Eeveelutions, his mind exploded with inspirations. He thanked Lucille, took her PokeDex and Eevee with him and left.
About a week later, Crewel (begrudgingly) returned a very pampered Eevee to Lucille. She did received some new outfits inspired by the Eeveelutions as well as outfits inspired by the Pokemons on her Main Team as compensation though.
Mozus Trein - Meowscarada (Puss)
Tumblr media
“You know, you might be my favorite monster out of the bunch”
Moves: Flower Trick, Energy Ball, Fake Out, Dark Pulse
The first time Trein met Puss is when he wandered into the lecture hall on accident. The professor was about to leave when Lucius spotted the humanoid feline creature lurking behind the door.
Lucius, being somewhat territorial, attacked the poor Magician Pokemon, who could only dodge out of fear. Trein had to step in and intercept.
Despite the scuffle, Puss didn’t stop visiting Trein every chance he get to show off some of his magic tricks and the poor man doesn’t understand why.
It wasn’t until later on when he asked Lucille why Puss keeps visiting him, turns out Trein and Lucius reminds Puss of Lucille’s father and his old and aggressive Purrloin. Trein felt honored at the statement, as for Lucius, it might take a while for him to finally warm up to the Magician Pokemon…
Ashton Vargas - Aqua Breed Tauros (Fernando)
Tumblr media
(There’s no gif of Aqua Breed Tauros so please have this gif of regular Tauros instead)
“Hahaha! You have raised quite a fantastic beast Beaumont!”
Moves: Horn Attack, Zen Headbutt, Raging Bull, Aqua Jet
It all started when Lucille asked Vargas if she could have some of her Pokemon out so they could let out some steam instead and the man happily agreed, claiming the more the merrier.
So Lucille let her Pokemon out, mostly the ones that are active and have lots of energy to burn, with Fernando being one of them.
Fernando, other than running with the other Pokemon, also had another mission being chase after some of the students that are slacking off when Vargas wasn’t paying attention.
It worked very well since nobody wanted to be ran over by a water bull.
Fernando received some hearty pets from Vargas while his trainer received a pat on her back (that almost toppled her over)
Sam - Runerigus
Tumblr media
“What do you say fellow ghost? Would you like to help me out at the shop?”
Moves: Shadow Ball, Earthquake, Shadow Claw, Rock Slide
Sam first meet Runerigus when he wandered into Sam’s shop on accident because he was curious about the presences he felt coming from the shop.
Had it not been for his friends on the other side, Sam would have thought the Pokemon is a statue/mural of some kind and he might have accidentally sell him to someone.
Sam enjoys Runerigus’ company and vice versa. Runerigus is also very careful with navigating around Sam’s shop as to not damage anything (because Lucille can’t exactly afford to pay for the damages)
Runerigus offers Sam his help whenever the man lets him stay around his shop. As a few unfortunate students have discovered that Runerigus is very good at spotting thieves.
And if you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Howl's Moving Castle x Twisted Wonderland Au
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The starry night at NRC was a spectacle of beauty and mystery, with the meteor shower painting the sky in shades of silver and gold. Yuu walked through the dark corridors of the Ramshackle dormitory, lit only by the flickering light of candles and a few points of failed electric light. Grim, the talking cat monster with dancing fire flames, followed beside her silently, his yellow eyes glowing with an unusual intensity and worried for his friend.
Today had been one of those days for the young woman without magic: Waking up late and almost late, she was intercepted by Crowley who had given exhaustive work that he himself had not done, the chemistry test that she and the infamous ADeuce had was a disaster, her crush had given the cold shoulder, Grim got into a totally unnecessary fight with some idiots from the fourth year and as a result they lost their lunch and got some scratches, and the front of his beloved Ramsharckle dorm collapsed, the damp and old wood had given way. The bitter taste in the mouth was not enough to bring a revolt from within Yuu so that she raised a scream of fury and stepped on the floor, her tired body just looked at the mess and walked straight past, the dejected soul took a shower where she hoped for the deep in her fragile heart, the shampoo would clean the dirt she felt and the tears would mix with the hot water.
At least I Tsunotaro will come today.- the only hope she could have that night was to see her dear friend. She put on her less tattered pajamas and sat at the study table waiting for the famous green fireflies to appear.
Unfortunately he didn't show up, the prince didn't answer the call.
The lack of Malleus's gentle presence made schoolwork become heavier and the lump in the throat tightened more and more, the clock was counting down the seconds to….
“Henchman, are you okay? Your eyes are red” with the little self-control he had, Yuu nodded, avoiding his feline friend's gaze and focusing on the blurry letters of school work and just in time the light in the dorm was cut off.
“NYAAH” “It was just what was needed!” Could it be Crowley's irresponsibility? The electricity bill? Was it an attack? A short circuit? Either way, it doesn't matter anymore.
The tired body got up and silently searched for the candles until strange lights passing through the window caught the girl's attention. Ah, the meteor shower. Like a leaf carried by the wind, Yuu's steps, even without hope, led her to the front part of the ramsharckle, the same part of which fell and collapsed. Pushing aside some wood, the girl sat down on the floor and Grim followed her shortly after, not trusting that her friend would be okay alone.
“Henchman, what are we doing here?” "I don't know…"
Will I ever really go home? Will I live forever in this place being this weak? I would do anything to see my family again… I myself will find a way to find my way back, whatever the cost.
Loneliness and anguish weighed on Yuu's heart, like chains that tied her to a distant past, an overwhelming longing for her homeland. She longed for a home, for a place where she could be truly happy. Home….my home….my family….The starry night shone with a unique and mysterious beauty, the shooting stars cutting across the sky like tears of light. Each meteorite that fell seemed to echo the loneliness and anguish that Yuu felt inside her.
As she watched the shooting stars cut across the sky like sharp blades, one of them stood out, shining with a disturbing intensity that seemed to whisper Yuu's name as the golden ball of fire quickly fell towards the ground. Without knowing why the girl just followed her heart and with an irresistible impulse, Yuu ran towards the shooting star, her mind filled with a mixture of despair and hope that she didn't know where it came from.
The powerful ball of fire broke apart and reflected various colors and when the star finally fell into her hands. As she held the star in her trembling hands, Yuu felt a wave of magical power envelop her, making her tremble with emotion and fear. A magical energy enveloped her, and in an instant, the star fell apart, disappearing into her body. A warm feeling filled Yuu, and she felt her heart beat faster than ever. The star, now resident in her being, revealed its mysterious and enigmatic personality, whispering ancient secrets and dark promises in her ears and finally a deal was made between the magicless human and the fallen star.
As Yuu absorbed the star's powers, the old Ramshackle dormitory began to shake and transform in sinister and fascinating ways before his eyes. Walls contorted, furniture came to life, and the abandoned place metamorphosed into a lively castle, with sparkling towers and enchanted gardens. The magic of the falling star had awakened the true essence of the place, revealing its hidden beauty.
The animated castle, now filled with the dark aura of the shooting star, rose majestically from the ground, its dark towers rising like sharp claws against the starry sky. The enchanted garden has turned into a maze of thorns and shadows, where unknown creatures lurk in the shadows, watching with glowing, hungry eyes.
“H-henchman! What is happening??"
With an enigmatic smile on her lips, Yuu looked at Grim, whose gaze reflected a mixture of fear and confusion. "Let's go home," she whispered, her voice echoing like a whisper of unknown magic. The cat nodded silently and ran to the girl's shoulders, saving his questions for later, because maybe later Yuu wouldn't be looking like a crazy woman with a flying Ramsharckle.
The old Ramsharckle dorm floated to where the two were and the door opened waiting for the two to climb up to finally grant the previously magicless girl's heart's desire.
“I'll come back to say goodbye later”
Who knows if she would come back who knows if not
She looked back one last time, remembering her adventures with the troublemaking cat and all the friends she made there. And with a firm step the girl went up in her castle and felt more ready than ever to embark on this adventure.
As the castle floated toward the distant horizon, the lights of shooting stars and meteorites hovered above them, shrouding them in a veil of mystery and intrigue. Yuu felt a shiver run down his spine, but also a sense of determination and courage that had long been forgotten.
And so, enveloped by the darkness of the starry night and the sinister magic of the falling star, Yuu and Grim set out on a journey into the unknown, where ancient secrets and intertwined destinies awaited them in the shadows of their path. Amidst the darkness and starlight, Yuu and Grim's journey was just beginning, with the power of the shooting star guiding their steps towards their final destination.
Hi, I love your headcanons, is there any way for a Kaibyo! Yuu?
Glad you enjoyed it, ask and you shall receive
𝐈𝐅 𝐘𝐔𝐔 𝐈𝐒 𝐀 𝐊𝐀𝐈𝐁𝐘𝐎 😺👻
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaibyō (怪猫, "strange cat") are supernatural cats in Japanese folklore. Examples include bakeneko, a yōkai (or supernatural entity) commonly characterized as having the ability to shapeshift into human form; maneki-neko, usually depicted as a figurine often believed to bring good luck to the owner; and nekomata, referring either to a type of yōkai that lives in mountain areas or domestic cats that have grown old and transformed into yōkai.
( English is not my first language )
Day 2 : kaibyo!yuu
The entrance ceremony goes exactly the same, waking up in a coffin,grim sets the fire to the school and acatera. Originally kaibyo!yuu thought that grim was the same kin, mystical cats able to manipulate blue flame and are capable of human speech, before the blue flame can spread kaibyo!yuu use their magic to stop it, for compensation kaibyo!yuu ask Crowley to allow grim to enter the school as another student.Crowley unfortunately has no choice ( literally )
Since the mirror said that kaibyo!yuu but they display some abilities to control fire and shape shift. So Crowley still allowed them to attend the school. When Crowley presents the ramshackle dorm to kaibyo!yuu, he swears they send him the most disgusted glared in the world. He swears when he was sleeping, he felt someone was watching and is cursing him. After being unable to take it any longer he fixed the dorms and that allowed him to sleep peacefully... For now.
Kaibyo!yuu as a student likes to sleep during class, when Mr trein asks them a question about a subject, they answer correctly, when a test happens they always get good grades and manage to stay on top of class and during a portion project they always get it perfect.
Technically kaibyo!yuu is 12 years old since in mythology if cats live more than 7 years or turn 12 years, they are able to turn into a kaibyo or bakeneko. So technically kaibyo!yuu is 12 years old but in cat years they would be 64 years old.
Kaibyo!yuu has the ability to manipulate blue flames as well to shape shift and are able to create illusion but it's not as realistic as kitsune!yuu. They are able to cast but they do need a piece of paper to cast them. By writing fire and throwing it or something touch it, it will summon a fire it's similar to glyph magic from the owl house.
Not to mention kaibyo!yuu have incredible stamina, flexibility, and speed as well to quick reaction speed. Since Kaibyo!Yuu have the ability to shape shift to a human disguise, but they usually aren't in this form either. Because it takes too much energy, so they fused both their human form and yokai form into one. In this form they have their feline features around their body but with a human body including their cat ears and a tail. Their body is covered in a thin layer of fur. As well a bonus to be immune to poison.
kaibyo!yuu is pretty laid-back but also quite blunt without realizing it. They are incredibly brutally honest but showing this side for those who are not close to them, only acting nice for those who are around their circle.
In this situation, when kaibyo!yuu was standing in the middle of a room too busy paying attention, someone stepped on their tale as a joke, let's just say the person ended up living with a multiple bloodied cat scratches on their body and face. rook is incredibly infatuated about them wanting to learn more about there physiology, so he went straight ahead and ask them let me tell you, kaibyo!yuu send this dude the most deadass glare in the world and that didn't work on him cause he keeps asking and every time when they tried to scratch he managed to dodge. Vil practically sees kaibyo!yuu as a potential to be a model or an actress due to their pretty appearance as well as there talent of memorising something quickly and perfectly, but their personality is a total downgrade.
Their main diets are usually poison. During lunch they will bring a snake, they hunt from the woods and eat it there, this certainly scares the vice warden of scarabia. After hearing their immunity to poison Jamil will ask for kaibyo!yuu to taste the food for kalim and if they like it, it means it's poisonous. This allowed kalim to eat food more freely as well Jamil not risking his lives.
Idia first impression on kaibyo!yuu was cute, behind the tablet he really wanted to pet them but after a few chapters. Idia is now afraid of kaibyo!yuu feeling they would judge him and send him a glare towards his way. He would just die.
Also after kaibyo!yuu have a cellphone given by Crowley. Carter introduced them into gaming and now they're hooked.
Kaibyo!yuu would not bid fairly in the octanaville chapter due to it taking place at water and they hate getting wet, because they feel heavy. And how long their fur can dry up, PS : they also mention having a sibling who is a nekomata.
