America is so messed up, y'all. I know you know that, but I'm feeling it extra this morning.

I saw a tiktok with someone talking about a few people just checking their cafe hours, or walking slowly past, or driving up & down the street, the day before. One of them wearing a plate-carrier vest, which immediately set off all my alarm bells. At the end they said they were still going to do Drag Storytime later that day, and if you see a certain car parked out front, that's a friendly, but if they're blocking the door you need to leave the neighborhood immediately.

I checked the time - posted yesterday morning. Checked the location, went to the news. I couldn't find anything, so I guess it went ok? There'd be a news story, surely. So this time, the worst didn't happen.

I saw that statistic about over 100 mass shootings this year already, and didn't remember hearing about that many. I pulled up the list, and was relieved to realize that the definition includes any shooting with multiple people at least injured. "Oh this is just regular gun violence", I said to myself. Not terrible events, just everyday murders.

(Don't read the stories of each one, though. They'll drag you back down to despair, some of them. Others have hardly any info - so you know that's just poor people, non-white people, criminals, and who cares about them to tell their stories?)

I don't have a point. Most of the time we're just living and it doesn't touch us, not really. Our teenage friend has to confront her rapist in court next week. They caught the guy who murdered those two high schoolers near my job, but what will that do? He's only 17, and punishment achieves nothing. People die every day who shouldn't, and the ones who deserve it seem immortal, untouchable.

I need to go make a cup of tea and distract myself from the horrors. Let the despair subside a little. Be safe, everyone.
