It's #MermaidMonday, but I wanted to talk about something I've noticed coming up in the LI cosplay scene. Recently, I overhead a lot of grumbling about how LI cosplayers are just becoming convention guests "for the fame" and that it's "not about cosplay anymore." I strongly disagree with this notion: as a cosplayer for more than ten years, and an active cosplayer in this area for five years, I've worked very hard to establish connections, make new friends, attend panels and workshops, and go to photoshoots as a model and photographer. I have been honored with invitations to numerous conventions as a guest, judge, and/or panelist, and for me, it's not about the fame. While it's nice to be noticed, I'm not in it for that reason. I love using my skills to educate others and teach them what I've learned. My background in theatre, film, education, and performance puts the emphasis on "play" for me as a cosplayer, personally, and I can channel those skills into performance, posing, interacting in character (especially with kids), and public speaking. I enjoy my work specifically because I can help those who feel unsure of themselves in costume find the confidence to pose like a pro and feel good about their hard work! That's why I love guesting at conventions and hosting these kinds of panels: it's an opportunity to grow for so many people--myself included. I learn so much from the people who attend my panels, and since cosplay is a collaborative hobby, why shouldn't we network? AND...if someone does guest at a convention for the fame or recognition? So what? Maybe they love the limelight, and that's okay, too! Cosplay is different for everyone, and we shouldn't knock something just because it's not the way we might approach it. @licomicbookexpo yesterday was a hugely successful show, so I wanted to share my thoughts this #MermaidMonday! The turnout was immense, and it was so thrilling to see so many fans across the two buildings! Many thanks to everyone who came by my booth to say hi and swam over to my panels on Mermaiding 101 and Cosplay Groups with @shutupkristen, too: your questions were awesome! @finfunmermaid, thank you for letting me represent you as one of your Mermaid Mania ambassadors at the con: your mermaid tails and flyers were a hit, as always! And my fellow cosplay guests and judges Kristen, @thattomcatt, @sapphirecatgirl, and @xorosemaidenox_cosplay really had our work cut out for us in the cosplay competition: there were so many mermazing costumes! Living the convention panel and costume contest judging life at @inbeoncon yesterday! I very much enjoy giving panels and I’d love to do more in the future. Cosplay 101, though only half an hour, was a big hit! Many thanks to @rizuki for approaching me to do this panel with her, and to our fellow panelists and cosplay judges for adding their expertise! While this wasn’t my first time judging a costume contest, I had such a blast with this fun-loving and creative group of contestants: musical performances, fight demos, and Tidus’ signature laugh were among my many favorites!
